The Bare-Minimum Wellness Routine That Keeps Me Sane-ish

The Bare-Minimum Wellness Routine That Keeps Me Sane-ish

Wellness culture keeps telling us that the secret to a good life is sunrise yoga, aten-step skincare routine, and a Himalayan salt lamp that somehow costs more than next month’s rent. But on most days, I’m just trying to get through traffic without losing hope, manage work without burning out, show up for the people I love, and make space for the occasional identity crisis. In that reality, wellness has to look different. It has to be simple. Gentle. Human. And low-effort enough that it doesn’t collapse the moment Monday shows up.

So this is the bare-minimum wellness routine I’ve come to trust. Nothing fancy. Just small, doable habits that fit into real life, and keep you steady without needing a spa day budget or monk-level discipline.

1. The Morning Reset

Before your brain starts loading stress like background apps, give yourself a two-minute signal that a new day has begun.

  • Splash cold water on your face
  • Drink a glass of water (yes, before coffee)
  • Stand by a window or balcony and breathe for 10 seconds

You’re not aiming for enlightenment. Just orientation.

2. The Two-Minute Move Rule

No gym. No mat. No pressure. Your new philosophy is to move for two minutes a day, in any way your body won’t protest.

  • A big, stretchy morning yawn + shoulder rolls
  • 10 squats while you make coffee
  • A walk across your room repeated 5 times
  • One song’s worth of light stretching

It’s not about fitness, it’s about circulation and shaking off that foggy, half-asleep energy.

3. The Three-Product Beauty Non-Negotiable

Indian weather can be… unpredictable. Scorching sun, pollution, dryness, humidity, all in one week. So pick threeproducts you’ll use daily, no matter how hectic life gets. That step becomes your anchor.

4. Your Daily Phone-Free Pocket

Not a full digital detox. Just ten minutes when your phone isn’t invited.

Choose one:

  • First 10 minutes of your morning
  • Last 10 minutes before bed
  • While having a meal
  • In the shower

This tiny boundary works wonders for your attention span and anxiety levels.

5. The Nightly Brain Unload

No perfect journaling. Just a quick, messy list of everything buzzing around your mind. Tasks. Thoughts. Worries. Things you need to remember tomorrow. All of it.

Emptying your mind before bed feels like clearing hundreds of browser tabs, liberating.

6. The 5% Rule

Ask yourself once a day:

“What would make the next hour feel 5% better?”

Tiny things count:

  • A cold beverage
  • Washing your face mid-day
  • Playing soft music
  • Sitting down for 5 minutes
  • Changing into comfy clothes after work

Not perfection, just tiny upgrades.

This is wellness without the pressure. Beauty without the overwhelm. And self-care without the guilt. A routine so simple you can maintain it even on days when everything feels like too much. Because when life gets busy, the bare minimum isn’t laziness, it’s survival. And sometimes, it’s exactly what keeps you sane.

The Bare-Minimum Skincare Routine For Men Who Hate Skincare

The Bare-Minimum Skincare Routine For Men Who Hate Skincare

I’m not really here to make you fall in love with skincare but rather chit chat about what’s worth getting out of bed and what’s not if you at all wish to look younger than you do right now.

When a friend of mine, Aarav, moved to Mumbai, he did so with three things: ambition, a backpack and a delusional conviction that one bar of soap could single-handedly maintain the entirety of his dermatological destiny.

Face? Soap.

Body? Soap.

Existential crisis? Hot shower with the same soap.

For a while, this monastic minimalism held steady. Until Mumbai intervened.

Weeks of seawind humidity, traffic fumes, late-night vada pav pilgrimages and the spiritual chaos of local trains gradually sculpted a version of him even he didn’t recognise. Duller, rougher, prematurely exhausted.

During a routine video call, his cousin (a long-suffering dermatologist who had spent years preaching the gospel of basic skincare) stared at his face and asked him why he looked like an off-duty rickshaw driver.

That line landed harder than Mumbai rent.

So he grudgingly began focusing on the most necessary bits of men’s skincare. And I’m sharing with you the minimal routine that rescued him.

Table of Contents

1. The Replacement of Your Soap

Your soap works against your face. Know that. Bar soaps possess a caustic pH that strips your skin of lipids faster than Mumbai landlords strip you of savings.

This results in dryness, dullness, random rough patches and gives your face an exhausted aesthetic.

A cleanser changes everything — subtly, efficiently, elegantly. Look for gel or foam formulations from houses like Aesop, Kiehl’s, Clinique, CeraVe or Dermalogica.

They cleanse and also restore equilibrium. Ten seconds. One wash. Zero emotional labour.

2. Twice-A-Week Ritual Of Exfoliating

Men underestimate exfoliation because it sounds like effort. Ironically, it’s the least effort for the most visible payoff.

A chemical exfoliant (AHA/BHA) dissolves dead skin, unclogs pores and reveals a smoother, clearer canvas — a process ordinarily accomplished only by good genetics or divine intervention.

Use it two evenings a week. Nothing more. Nothing less.

3. Serum – The One Step That Makes You Look Expensive

Serums are potent, refined, sophisticated. They are the haute couture of skincare.

This is the product grooming editors, dermatologists, celebrities and even the PR girls at fashion week rely on when they need to look luminous on zero sleep. For Indian male skin battling pollution, fatigue and erratic routines, a Vitamin C or Niacinamide serum is alchemy. It can brighten, strengthen, even tone and fight dullness.

Think of it as an espresso shot with antioxidants for your skin.

Luxury picks: Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, Augustinus Bader Light Serum, La Roche-Posay, Minimalist, Korean formulations if you want that sleek K-drama luminosity.

4. Moisturiser Because Hydrated Skin Makes You Look Competent

Moisturisers don’t make your skin unnecessarily extra shiny; they refine your skin. Hydration is the difference between looking tired and looking ready to attend a wedding.

It makes your skin appear smoother, softer and more conventionally successful, the way CEOs and men in Tata ads always mysteriously look.

Look for featherlight textures like Clinique Moisture Surge, Neutrogena Hydro Boost, Belif Aqua Bomb, Plum Men, Forest Essentials Light Gel.

5. The Night Ritual

Nighttime is when your skin repairs the sins of your day — sun, sweat, traffic, stress, questionable food choices, emotional burnout, everything.

Your nighttime routine is simple but very important. Cleanser, Serum, Moisturiser.

Nothing elaborate. Nothing intimidating. Nothing that requires a ring light or 12-step Korean manuals. Just three actions that reverse environmental damage while you dream of a life where you have better habits.

The Final Word

You don’t need a doctoral thesis in skincare. You don’t need 17 products. You don’t need to turn into that man on Instagram who stores moisturiser in a skincare fridge.

You just need five aristocratically minimal steps, tested and approved by dermatologists, loved by lazy men.

It’s a given that the magic doesn’t happen overnight but if in a month or so people around you recognise the improvement, that’s the highest compliment a man can earn without any actual effort.
