Simple, Natural, and Frugal: The Best Homemade Skincare Recipes for Healthy Skin

Simple, Natural, and Frugal: The Best Homemade Skincare Recipes for Healthy Skin

For years, I thought taking care of my skin meant buying more products. More bottles. More steps. More money spent. But the deeper I went into simple living and natural health, the more I realized something surprising:

Healthy skin thrives on simplicity.

Once I started making my own skincare products, my routine became easier, my skin became calmer, and my budget finally breathed a sigh of relief. Homemade skincare isn’t about perfection or luxury—it’s about using real ingredients, reducing toxins, and caring for your body in a way that supports overall health.

This post brings together my best homemade skincare recipes – the ones I’ve relied on again and again. These recipes are simple, affordable, effective, and perfect for anyone who wants a natural beauty routine without the overwhelm.

Don’t fall for fads and ads that slowly convince you that you have to spend a ton of money to get good results with your skin. I’ve been there! The ads are simply doing their job, but you can do the same thing with simple, organic ingredients.

Why Homemade Skincare Recipes are Better for Your Skin (and Your Life)

Before diving into recipes, let’s talk about why homemade skincare fits so well into a simple, natural lifestyle.

Homemade skincare helps you:

  • Avoid unnecessary toxic chemicals and fragrances
  • Reduce clutter in your bathroom
  • Save significant money over time
  • Support your skin’s natural balance
  • Simplify your daily routine

Your skin is an organ. What you put on it matters. When you nourish it with real ingredients and a natural homemade skincare routine without harsh chemicals, it responds with better tone, texture, and resilience. That natural glow that you want? Yes, it’s possible with even easier to get with homemade skincare products.

A Simple Natural Skincare Routine at Home

You don’t need 25 steps. Most skin does best with just:

  1. Step 1 – Gentle Homemade Facial Cleanser (and Toner if desired)
  2. Step 2 – Nourishing Homemade Face Moisturizer
  3. Step 3 – Weekly Exfoliation with a Homemade Sugar Scrub
  4. Step 4 – Any extras as needed like Deodorant and Lip Balm.

Everything below fits into that simple framework. These recipes create easy homemade skincare for beginners, but simple doesn’t mean ineffective.

Like I said above, our skin THRIVES on nourishing simplicity.

1) Gentle Homemade Facial Cleanser for Balanced Skin

Recipe: 5 Organic Homemade Facial Cleansers

Cleansing should clean—not strip. These gentle homemade cleansers remove dirt and makeup while respecting your skin’s natural oils. Win-Win!

Why it’s amazing for your skin:

  • Helps prevent dryness and irritation
  • Supports acne-prone or sensitive skin
  • Simple ingredients you can trust, because you made it!

Many people struggle with breakouts because of an overproduction of oils (hormonal issue), a bacterial buildup from touching the face or having a dirty pillowcase, or an allergic reaction to products such as detergents and makeup.

These recipes simplify everything by working with your skin instead of against it. They cleanse gently and organically.

Instructional tip: Massage gently for 30–60 seconds, then rinse with warm (not hot) water.

You can also try my acne liquid cleanser or my anti-aging liquid cleansers from my shop.

2) Simple Homemade Facial Toner for Balanced Skin

Recipe: Homemade Facial Toner for Acne Prone Skin

A simple homemade facial toner can gently refresh the skin, balance pH, and prepare it for moisture without adding unnecessary steps or products.

Benefits of a homemade facial toner include:

  • Helps remove leftover residue after cleansing
  • Supports skin’s natural pH
  • Calms irritation and redness
  • Closes pores and prepares skin to better absorb moisturizer

Unlike store-bought toners, homemade versions skip alcohol, synthetic fragrance, and harsh preservatives.

I like to use witch hazel, rose water, and aloe. They are wonderful at closing pores and soothing irritated skin. You can use the link above or buy some from my shop.

3) Homemade Face Moisturizer That Actually Works

Recipe: Homemade Face Cream with Rose and Sandalwood

I have perpetually dry skin. I’ve tried every product imaginable before making my own. It’s obviously an internal issue that I’ve been working on, but in the meantime, my shea lotion moisturizers are simply amazing. Not only do they keep my face (and body) moisturized throughout the winter, but it doesn’t clog my pores like so many face creams.

So that being said, this is one of my most foundational recipes — for good reason. Most lotions are full of alcohol and preservatives. This recipe uses beeswax and cocoa butter, which are both a humectant, trapping moisture near the skin.

Why this moisturizer is so effective:

  • Locks in moisture naturally with beeswax (a humectant)
  • Supports skin elasticity (thank you!)
  • No water, no preservatives, no chemicals

Because it’s oil-based, you only need a tiny amount. One batch lasts months, making it incredibly frugal. This is the moisturizer I reach for daily—and it’s replaced every store-bought cream I once relied on.

I have an Anti-Aging Face cream and body lotions in my shop that are so incredibly luxurious!

4) Homemade Sugar Scrub for Glowing Skin

Recipe: 5 Easy Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipes

Sugar is one of the most underrated skincare ingredients. It exfoliates gently while drawing moisture into the skin. There’s a reason your skin feel’s silky smooth after using one.

Why this scrub works so well:

  • Removes dead skin without damage
  • Improves circulation
  • Leaves skin smooth, not tight

This recipe is perfect for face, lips, or body, and it takes just minutes to make. No fancy exfoliants required.

Instructional tip: Use once a week—more is not better when it comes to exfoliation. Also, be careful using in the shower or bathtub! The oils make for a SLIPPERY surface.

Try one with organic sugar and essential oils from my shop.

5) Natural Homemade Deodorant

Recipe: The Best, Easy Homemade Deodorant

This is a really big one! Deodorants can be extremely toxic, and even if you try to buy healthy, most “natural” deodorants still sneak in some toxic ingredients. Switching to a natural homemade deodorant is one of the simplest ways to reduce daily toxin exposure (and I have a number of recipes if you have an aversion to certain ingredients). These recipes really work!

This particular recipe uses coconut oil, baking soda, and arrowroot powder to control odor naturally. Add the essential oil of choice for scent, but you can leave it unscented and it will still work wonderfully.

Why it’s so beneficial:

  • No aluminum or artificial fragrance
  • Gentle and customizable
  • Supports the natural detox process but allowing you to sweat lightly
  • Does not clog lymph nodes

This recipe fits perfectly into a healthy, natural lifestyle without unnecessary toxins like aluminum.

Need a non baking soda recipe? Try this one.

If you’d like to buy a baking soda or non-baking soda version, you can get them in my shop.

6) Simple Homemade Lip Balm

Recipe: Easy Lip Balm Recipe with Herbs and Essential Oils

Most store-bought lip balms actually make lips drier over time. This simple homemade version heals instead of masking the problem.

Why this lip balm works:

  • Nourishes deeply with natural oils
  • No petroleum or synthetic ingredients
  • Safe for kids and adults

This is a great beginner recipe and a reminder that skincare doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. If you need to leave out the herbs, because it just seems overwhelming, that’s ok! It still makes a wonderful lip balm.

The cocoa butter and beeswax are a humectant that traps moisture close to the skin. They naturally heal lips heal and hydrate while protecting from wind and cold dry air.

I have clear and red tinted lip balm for that small color boost that I sell in my shop.

How Homemade Skincare Recipes Simplify Daily Life

One of the biggest benefits of making your own skincare is how much mental space it frees up. Fewer products. Fewer decisions. Less stress.

Instead of chasing trends, you build a routine that:

  • Supports long-term skin health
  • Fits naturally into your day
  • Aligns with frugal, intentional living

Your beauty routine should align with your values.

Simple living isn’t about doing without—it’s about choosing what truly matters.

Every recipe above costs just a fraction of commercial products. Many use ingredients you already have at home. Over time, the savings add up!

Final Thoughts: Start Small and Keep It Simple

If you’re new to homemade skincare, don’t try everything at once. Start with:

  • One cleanser
  • One moisturizer

Give your skin time to adjust. Simplicity allows your body to do what it was designed to do.

Homemade skincare isn’t about perfection—it’s about stewardship, health, and intentional living (including what you eat and drink). And that’s what simple life is all about.

AI skincare and more – 6 beauty trends that dominated 2025

Skincare is the basis of our beauty routines and the industry is evolving.

As the skincare shifts toward science-led personalisation, Dr Danielle Gounder, co-founder of Skin-Recode in Cape Town, shares her expert insights on the biggest trends defining 2025.

A review of 2025 skincare trends

Dr Danielle says 2025 was deeply restorative, championing barrier health, minimalism and biotech boosts, all fuelled by a consumer backlash against overkill.

Skincare has become smarter, not harsher, with med-spas and at-home technology narrowing the gap between the clinic and daily routine.

A notable cultural shift also emerged, a decisive move toward more natural aesthetics and a push to undo enhancements where necessary. Subtle, non-surgical body sculpting rose as the confidence-boosting option that still felt true to self.

READ MORE | Skincare through the ages – how to care for your skin as you age

Here are six skincare trends that took centre stage in 2025:

1. Barrier care took centre stage

“Barrier repair was the undisputed hero of 2025,” Dr Danielle says. “Ceramides, niacinamide and comforting occlusives, including a refined take on slugging – dominated routines designed to heal the sins of over-exfoliation. Sunscreen, meanwhile, evolved into a luxurious essential; silky, reef-safe formulas transformed daily protection into pleasure, not punishment.”

2. Skinimalism: Less is the new more

“The 12-step era faded into memory, replaced by skinimalism: streamlined routines built on high-performing, multi-tasking products,” she explains. “Milky toners that cleanse, hydrate and plump in a single step saw a 49 percent spike in search interest. Efficiency was the new indulgence, ditching viral experiments for proven results.”

3. Biotech and personalisation go mainstream

“Artificial intelligence (AI) shifted skincare from guesswork to precision, enabling custom formulations and personalised guidance without invasive testing,” the doctor says. “Clean, pregnancy-safe and tween-friendly beauty surged, widening access to glowy, gentle care.”

4. Cosmetic proceedure reversals

“Authenticity also reigned. When Kylie Jenner openly dissolved her lip fillers for a softer, more relatable look, it sparked a global wave of ‘filler reversals’. Hyaluronidase bookings soared in clinics as people embraced features that feel theirs inherently – celebrating refreshment over exaggeration,” Dr Danielle explains.

5. The body enters the chat

“Body ‘skinification’ exploded – extending actives like niacinamide and ceramides from the face to the limbs and even the scalp, helping drive a 20 percent category uptick. Hair health innovations continued across removal and regrowth.

6. Non-surgical proceedures

“Most notably, non-surgical contouring took off. Ultrasonic cavitation and laser liposuction have become the sculpting solutions of choice, breaking down stubborn fat with sound waves or laser energy, resulting in minimal downtime and scar-free refinement. These gentler approaches embodied 2025’s core ethos: less drama, more confidence.”

Dr Danielle says, the year that was saw a more considered approach to skincare. “Overall, 2025 rewarded patience — calmer skin, smarter spending and a rejection of extremes, whether filler overload or ingredient hoarding.”

Skincare Routines of Bollywood Celebrities That Actually Work

93

Most of us don’t provide the best services to our skin until it starts acting up. Dullness, sudden breakouts, fine lines, or uneven texture are some of the warning signs your skin tells you it’s time you take care of it. Just like your body, your skin goes through pollution, late nights, and stress. That’s where these Bollywood celebrities bring great skincare routines that help us have healthy and glowing skin.

No one cares for their skin like Kriti Sanon and Madhuri Dixit. Right from the early years, the actresses have designed a strict routine for their skin from morning to night. The beauty stars shared some great tips from their routines, highlighting beauty brands and ways to use them.

Real Skincare Routine That Actually Works

A real skincare routine is not just about relying on quick fixes but about keeping things simple and balanced. Some days your skin may feel oily, dull, or exhausted, and on some days your skin may glow. The real secret lies in finding a balance between lifestyle habits and using good beauty brands.

Skin starts looking calm, gentle, and naturally glowy with simple adjustments and proper skincare products. It starts learning to fight pollution, exhaustion, sun exposure, and lack of sleep without immediate complaints.

Can Simple Skincare Actually Work

Modern skincare requires complex routines and many active ingredients. They may show quick results, but they do not last long. Bollywood celebrities often follow consistent and straightforward routines for their glamorous skin to look camera-ready, even when they get up. They stick to simple hydration, gentle exfoliation, and adequate sun protection.

The Core Idea Behind Everyday Skincare Habits

Morning Routine with Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri keeps her mornings simple, consistent, and skin-first.

  • She starts with a gentle cleanser to remove overnight buildup, followed by a toner to prep the skin.

  • Toner comes next to wake the skin up and prep it properly

  • Vitamin C is her glow hero. Brightens, supports collagen, keeps skin looking fresh

  • Moisturiser to lock everything in and keep skin comfortable all day

  • SPF is non-negotiable. Indoors, outdoors, cloudy days, always

Simple, disciplined, and very Madhuri. Consistency over complexity.

Evening routine: Madhuri Dixit

At the end of the day, Madhuri focuses on thorough cleansing and repair.

  • She begins with a cleansing balm to break down makeup and sunscreen,

  • followed by micellar water and makeup wipes for a deeper clean

  • A gentle cleanser ensures no residue is left behind.

  • She then applies toner, Vitamin C, and moisturiser to restore balance.

  • Under-eye cream targets fine lines and fatigue, while lip balm keeps lips soft overnight.

Morning routine: Kriti Sanon

Kriti’s morning skincare routine is calm, gentle, and very intuitive.

  • A key rule she follows is being kind to the skin, no harsh rubbing, no rushing. Slightly damp skin helps absorb most ingredients better

  • If you choose to use a toner, she suggests an alcohol-free one.

  • Vitamin C serum is best used in the morning since it acts as a powerful antioxidant, offers added protection against UV damage, brightens the skin, supports collagen, and softens fine lines.

  • Sunscreen is non-negotiable. She recommends choosing one that suits your skin type, cream or lotion for dry skin, gel for oily skin, ideally with ceramides to support the skin barrier.

  • Apply one sunscreen, let it absorb fully, then layer a tinted sunscreen on top rather than mixing products, as some formulas do not work well together and uneven layering can reduce protection.

  • Lip balm is just as important as face care. It helps prevent chapping and darkening and can even be gently applied on eyelids and the corners of the eyes.

Evening routine: Kriti Sanon

Kriti’s evening routine is all about hydration and barrier repair.

  • She starts by dampening her skin with rose water, then applies a niacinamide toner to refine and calm the skin.

  • A hydrating serum with peptides and hyaluronic acid boosts moisture, followed by a gentle retinol serum for skin renewal.

  • She seals everything in with a ceramide-rich moisturiser, making sure not to skip the neck.

  • Lip balm is applied generously, including near the eyes to help prevent crow’s feet.

  • For lashes and brows, she uses a mix of castor and olive oil to keep them nourished and strong.

Final Thoughts

These Bollywood celebrities believe that glam skin starts with an adequate skincare routine and consistency. Kriti Sanon and Madhuri Dixit’s skincare routines are thoughtful and easy to follow, giving fresh skin every single day.

A little care done consistently is the secret behind long-lasting, flawless skin. Start listening to your skin and customize the skincare routines. These skincare routines are practical and effective, leaving behind lasting, glassy skin that leaves your skin camera-ready even on your tough days. You don’t have to indulge in fancy or luxury skincare products- just focus on simple, basic, and effective routines using basic and natural products.

Citrus fruits are known to contain more Vitamin C

Can Eating More Vitamin C Physically Change Your Skin? Study Reveals

Citrus fruits are known to contain more Vitamin C | Image:
Freepik

Scientists discovered that vitamin C from food travels through the bloodstream into every layer of the skin, boosting collagen and skin renewal. People who ate two vitamin C-packed kiwifruit daily showed thicker, healthier skin. The findings suggest glowing skin really does start from within. Scientists at the University of Otago, Faculty of Medicine Christchurch Otautahi, have identified a direct connection between how much vitamin C people eat and how well their skin produces collagen and renews itself. The findings show that skin health responds measurably to dietary vitamin C, not just topical treatments. Published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the research found that vitamin C levels in the skin closely mirror levels in the blood (plasma). Increasing intake through vitamin C rich foods was shown to raise both blood and skin concentrations.

Eating Vitamin C Raises Skin Levels and Thickness

The study followed 24 healthy adults in Aotearoa New Zealand and Germany. Participants who raised their plasma vitamin C levels by eating two vitamin C rich SunGoldTM kiwifruit each day showed a clear increase in vitamin C within their skin. This increase was associated with thicker skin (collagen production) and greater renewal of the outer skin layer. Lead author Professor Margreet Vissers from Matai Haora — Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine within the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine described the results as striking. The strength of the association between skin thickness and vitamin C intake is “compelling,” she explained.

Vitamin C Moves From Blood to Skin

According to Professor Vissers, the relationship between blood vitamin C and skin vitamin C stood out compared to other organs. “We were surprised by the tight correlation between plasma vitamin C levels and those in the skin this was much more marked than in any other organ we have investigated,” she says. The research team also found that vitamin C circulating in the bloodstream reaches every layer of the skin and supports healthier skin function. “We are the first to demonstrate that vitamin C in the blood circulation penetrates all layers of the skin and is associated with improved skin function. I am very proud of my team and excited about what the data is telling us.”

Why Diet Matters More Than Creams

Professor Vissers says the findings reinforce the idea that skin health begins internally, with nutrients delivered naturally through the bloodstream. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, which is why it is commonly added to skincare products. However, vitamin C dissolves easily in water and does not absorb well through the outer skin barrier. The study showed that skin cells are highly efficient at absorbing vitamin C from the blood, with uptake into the outer epidermal layer appearing to be a priority.

How the Study Was Conducted

The research was funded by New Zealand company Zespri International, along with a University of Otago Research Grant, and included two phases. The first phase examined the relationship between plasma and skin vitamin C levels using healthy skin tissue from patients undergoing elective surgical procedures at Te Whatu Ora Canterbury (with support from the Otago campus’s He Taonga Tapu Canterbury Cancer Society Tissue Bank). The second phase involved a controlled dietary intervention carried out in Christchurch and Germany. Each location included 12 healthy participants.

Eight Weeks of Dietary Change

Participants were asked to eat two Kiwi Gold kiwifruit daily for eight weeks. This provided the equivalent of 250 micrograms of vitamin C. “All were instructed to consume two Kiwi Gold kiwifruit daily — the equivalent of 250 micrograms of vitamin C — for eight weeks. We then collected skin samples before and after the intervention, with separate analyses allowing us to look at the skin basal layers in Christchurch and the outer dermal skin layer and skin function tests in Germany,” Professor Vissers explains. German participants were recruited and tested by the SGS Institute Fresenius in Hamburg, which has the technical capability to collect samples from the outer dermal skin layer (the blister “roof”). The institute evaluated skin regeneration using ultrasound measurements of skin thickness, elasticity UV protection and epidermal cell renewal to assess overall skin function.

Clear Gains in Collagen and Skin Renewal

One of the most significant findings was a measurable rise in skin thickness among participants, indicating increased collagen production along with faster regeneration of epidermal cells. “The other really substantial finding showed a significant increase in the participants’ skin thickness levels, reflecting collagen production and an upsurge in the regeneration of their epidermal cells, in other words skin renewal,” Professor Vissers says.

Other Vitamin C Foods Likely Offer Similar Benefits

SunGold kiwifruit was selected for the study because of its consistently high vitamin C content. However, the researchers expect similar benefits from other vitamin C-rich foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables such as citrus, berries, capsicums and broccoli. “We suggest that increasing your dietary vitamin C intake will result in effective vitamin C uptake into all compartments of the skin,” Professor Vissers says.

Daily Intake Is Key

Maintaining steady vitamin C levels in the blood is essential, since the body does not store the vitamin long term. Professor Vissers notes that healthy individuals can reach optimal plasma levels with about 250mg of vitamin C per day. “The important thing is to keep your plasma levels optimal, which we know can be easily achieved in a healthy person with a vitamin C intake of around 250mg per day. The body however does not store the vitamin, so we recommend 5+ a day, every day, with one of those five being a high vitamin C food, as a good habit to cultivate.”

The K-beauty trends expected to explode in 2026, according to a Korean skincare expert

The K-beauty trends expected to explode in 2026, according to a Korean skincare expert

Long before ‘skin barrier’, ‘slugging’ or ‘glass skin’ entered our everyday beauty vocabulary, Korean skincare was quietly setting the standard, rewriting the rules of what effective (and fun) skincare could look like. This year, K-beauty continued to inform skincare trends. And according to the experts, 2026 will show no sign of that interest slowing down. In fact, they believe that the influence of K-beauty is only set to deepen in 2026. As beauty lovers become savvier, the desire for results-driven routines that still feel sensorial has never been stronger. Next year, it’s all about fewer steps, smarter formulas and a focus on long term skin health.

© Biodance

So what’s next? To get a pulse on the trends set to take over our bathroom shelves in the year ahead, K-beauty expert and Skin Cupid CEO and founder, Melody Yuan, exclusively shares her predictions on the innovations, ingredients and philosophies set to define 2026.

Melody tells H! Fashion: “Having already set the global stage for skin care, K-beauty continues to set the benchmark for innovation. UK consumers are becoming more ingredient-savvy, gravitating towards the gentle formulations and advanced technology that Korean skincare is celebrated for. 2026 will be a year defined by personalisation, skin health, and sustainable luxury.”

Keep reading for all the need to know trends, ingredients and innovations in K-beauty for 2026…

 AI-Driven Skin Personalisation

K-beauty is set to embrace next-level personalisation in 2026, driven by rapid advances in beauty tech. Melody explains that tech-integrated skincare will soon deliver truly tailored routines for UK consumers. “With tech-integrated beauty on the rise, 2026 is set to bring personalised routines to UK consumers,” says Melody, pointing to advanced diagnostic tools, app-linked routines, and AI-generated custom formulations that adapt in real time to lifestyle and environmental factors.

Barrier-First

Barrier repair continues to dominate the global skincare conversation and K-beauty is taking it a step further. “Barrier-repair skincare is rising across the globe, and K-beauty will be pushing it further with new-generation strengthening complexes,” notes the expert. She explains that ultra-gentle, microbiome-supporting formulas, particularly those using fermented ingredients, ceramides, and postbiotic blends, will become central to everyday routines. However, she adds that consumers will need to be mindful about how they protect and restore the skin barrier, rather than overdoing it.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

PLLA, long associated with in-clinic treatments, is also moving into mainstream skincare. “You may have heard of this ingredient, which is often used in injectable fillers and other dermatology treatments, and we can expect to see more over-the-counter cosmetic products formulated with PLLA in 2026,” she explains. While topical formulas can’t replicate the results of injectables, the expert  explains they can still help exfoliate, hydrate, and improve elasticity for smoother-looking skin.

Hybrid-Skincare Products

The ‘glass skin’ aesthetic continues to dominate, and hybrid skincare is playing a major role in achieving the look. Already gaining momentum, these multitasking formulas are set to become even more prevalent in the year ahead. “We’ve seen a rise in the ‘glass skin’ aesthetic this year, and this is formed by using hybrid-skincare products,” she says. As the category grows, Skin Cupid’s founder explains that hybrid formulas promote wearable, multi-layered radiance through a mix of skincare and makeup benefits. “Think soft-focus glow and skin-boosting luminisers – products that deliver long-term skin health benefits alongside instant luminosity.”

Traditional Ingredients

Modernised hanbang (traditional Korean herbal medicine) is also set to make a strong comeback in 2026, reimagined through a contemporary lens. “We expect that 2026 will see a major surge in modernised hanbang formulas,” says the expert. Ingredients such as ginseng, mugwort, and bamboo sap will rise in popularity, she explains, paired with peptides and advanced encapsulation technologies to improve stability and ingredient delivery.

Sensorial Skincare

As skincare culture continues to thrive on TikTok, sensorial experiences are becoming just as important as results. “With the rise of sensorial skincare on TikTok, Korean beauty brands are set to introduce more sensorial textures, uplifting aromas, and mood-enhancing formulations,” she tells us. By transforming daily routines into moments of self-care, Melody believes sensorial skincare will add an entirely new dimension to the K-beauty market and is one of the most exciting trends to watch in the new year.

An expert’s K-beauty product recommendations for 2026:

Southwest_Shepherds Pie

Southwest Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Growing up in Texas, I have a special place in my heart for Tex-Mex recipes. Simple dishes like these Tex-Mex lettuce wraps and southwest shepherd’s pie make a regular appearance on our family menu. It’s a delicious twist on the classic shepherd’s pie recipe.

It’s similar to a taco casserole, but with a creamy potato topping. You can also make this easy Southwest shepherd’s pie recipe ahead of time and pop it in the oven for an easy supper. The toppings are customizable, but cilantro and chopped jalapenos are some of our favorites.

Southwest Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients

This recipe uses a variety of southwestern style ingredients. Instead of the classic carrots, celery, and peas, we’re using zucchini, tomatoes, and bell peppers. And the spices get an upgrade too with spicy oregano and chili powder, flavorful cumin, and smoky paprika.

You can even choose your favorite potato for the topping. I like using Russet potatoes since they’re more starchy and give it a good texture. Creamy yellow or red potatoes work well too. Or switch it up and try a southwestern sweet potato shepherd’s pie with orange or white sweet potatoes.

For the meat, I use grass-fed ground beef. It has a better nutrient profile than grain-fed beef (plus it’s overall healthier). I also like to cook ground beef in bulk at the beginning of the week to make meal prep easier. If you prefer, ground chicken or ground turkey work just as well.

Why You’ll Love Southwest Shepherd’s Pie

In addition to the delicious flavor, I love that this recipe has 21 grams of protein per serving. It’s cozy and satisfying for chilly nights when I want something warm for supper. Even though there are a few steps involved, it pulls together fairly quickly with only 20 minutes of prep time.

Sometimes I’ll make a double batch and freeze some for later. Simply place the completely cooled casserole in the freezer (in a freezer-safe container). Once you’re ready to reheat, let it thaw and then pop it in the oven until warmed through and bubbly. Southwest shepherd’s pie tastes even better the next day if you have leftovers. This gives the ingredients some more time to meld.

Here’s how to make it!

Southwest Shepherd’s Pie

For the Topping

  • 2 medium potatoes of choice (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 TBSP grass-fed butter (or avocado oil)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • salt to taste
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  • Boil the chopped potatoes in salted water until soft, about 12–15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, almond milk, garlic powder, and salt. Set aside.

  • Brown the meat in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Add onion, garlic, bell pepper, and zucchini and sauté 5–7 minutes until softened.

  • Stir in spices, tomatoes, and black beans. Add broth if the mixture looks dry and simmer for 5 minutes.

  • Transfer the filling to a greased 9×9 or medium casserole dish. Spread the mashed potato mixture evenly on top.

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, until bubbling and lightly golden on top.

  • Top and serve: Garnish with cilantro, avocado, or a dollop of Greek yogurt.
  • Use any potato you’d like here. Russet, sweet potatoes, or white sweet potatoes are all great options!

Customize the Toppings

My kids like to choose their own toppings when I make this. You can even make a toppings bar (kind of like a taco bar). Have a few options on the table for the family to choose from, so everyone can tweak the flavors to their liking. Here are some ideas:

  • A dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Pickled onions
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Chopped bacon pieces
  • Avocado slices or guacamole
  • Extra cheese
  • Sliced black olives
  • Chopped jalapeno or poblano peppers

Safe, Simple At-Home Skincare Solutions

Safe, Simple At-Home Skincare Solutions

Homemade face masks are best viewed as supportive care rather than miracle treatments. They can complement regular skincare but should not replace dermatologist-recommended solutions for persistent skin concerns.

For Dry Skin: Restoring Moisture and Comfort
Dry skin often feels tight, flaky, and dull due to a lack of natural oils. Ingredients rich in vitamins and natural fats work well to replenish moisture. A blend of mashed ripe banana, honey, and milk or fresh cream helps deeply nourish the skin. Banana provides essential nutrients, honey locks in hydration, and dairy ingredients soften and soothe, leaving the skin feeling supple and refreshed.

For Oily Skin: Controlling Excess Oil
Oily skin produces excess sebum, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Multani mitti combined with rose water creates an effective oil-absorbing mask. This mixture helps cleanse pores, reduce shine, and calm the skin. For those without sensitivity, a small amount of lemon juice may be added, but overuse should be avoided to prevent dryness.

For Acne-Prone Skin: Gentle and Soothing Care
Skin prone to acne requires extra caution. Harsh ingredients or scrubbing can worsen inflammation. A simple mask made with aloe vera gel and a pinch of turmeric offers calming and antibacterial benefits. Aloe vera helps reduce redness and supports healing, while turmeric may assist in controlling bacteria associated with breakouts.

For Combination Skin: Achieving Balance
Combination skin presents both oily and dry areas, making balance essential. A light mask using yogurt and honey works well across the face. Yogurt gently refreshes the skin through mild exfoliation, while honey maintains hydration without adding greasiness, helping achieve an even, healthy appearance.

For Dull or Tired Skin: Reviving Natural Glow
Daily exposure to pollution, stress, and lack of sleep can leave skin looking tired. A traditional mix of besan, milk or rose water, and a small pinch of turmeric has long been used to enhance brightness and clarity. This mask helps refresh the complexion and restore a natural glow.

Tips for Safe Use of DIY Face Masks
Always perform a patch test before applying any new mixture. Limit use to once a week unless advised otherwise. Avoid harsh or acidic ingredients that may damage the skin barrier. Most importantly, remember that DIY masks support overall skincare but are not substitutes for medical treatments.

With consistency, awareness of skin needs, and a mindful approach, homemade face masks can be a simple and enjoyable way to care for your skin naturally.

BUILDING A LUXURY SKINCARE BRAND IN INDIA: LESSONS FROM A FOUNDER

BUILDING A LUXURY SKINCARE BRAND IN INDIA: LESSONS FROM A FOUNDER

Luxury skincare often looks glamorous from the outside – beautiful packaging, premium pricing, and aspirational storytelling. But building a truly luxury skincare brand in India is far more complex than it appears. Behind the aesthetics lie years of formulation discipline, difficult trade-offs, and an unwavering focus on long-term skin health rather than short-term trends.

By Bathula Meghana, Founder, GlowBareSkin

As India’s beauty market rapidly expands, founders entering the premium skincare space are learning that luxury today is no longer defined by surface-level appeal alone. It is shaped by trust, science, and patience – qualities that are far harder to build than a visually striking brand.

Why Luxury Beauty Is Harder Than It Looks

India is one of the fastest-growing skincare markets in the world, driven by a young, digitally aware consumer base. At the same time, this growth has created an intensely crowded landscape. New brands launch almost every week, many riding waves of viral ingredients, aggressive claims, and fast-turnaround formulations.

For a founder, the challenge is not launching quickly – it is choosing not to.

Luxury skincare demands restraint. It requires resisting shortcuts, avoiding formulation compromises, and accepting slower timelines. Unlike mass beauty, where speed often wins, luxury skincare is built on precision, consistency, and long-term performance. Every ingredient choice, concentration level, and formulation decision carries weight, because the end consumer expects results that go beyond immediate gratification.

The Quality vs Speed Dilemma

One of the earliest lessons in building a premium skincare brand is understanding the cost of speed. Faster product development may bring quicker market entry, but it often comes at the expense of formulation stability, ingredient synergy, and skin compatibility.

In skincare, what works instantly does not always work sustainably. High-percentage actives may deliver short-term glow, but they can also compromise the skin barrier when used repeatedly or without adequate formulation balance. Luxury brands must think beyond trends and ask a harder question: Will this product still serve the consumer’s skin six months, one year, or five years from now?

Choosing quality over speed means longer development cycles, multiple rounds of testing, and, at times, saying no to popular ingredients that do not align with long-term skin health. It is a slower path – but it is also the only one that builds credibility.

Consumer Trust in a Crowded Market

Indian skincare consumers today are more informed than ever. Ingredient lists are scrutinised, routines are compared across global markets, and brand claims are increasingly questioned. Trust is no longer built through marketing alone – it is earned through consistency and transparency.

For founders, this means recognising that trust is cumulative. One poorly thought-out product or exaggerated claim can undo years of effort. Luxury skincare brands must communicate clearly, avoid overpromising, and allow products to speak through performance rather than hype.

In a market flooded with “miracle” solutions, restraint itself becomes a signal of confidence. Brands that prioritise education over exaggeration tend to build deeper, longer-lasting relationships with their consumers.

Why Skin Health Must Come Before Hype

The rise of social media has amplified skincare trends at an unprecedented pace. Ingredients cycle in and out of popularity, often without sufficient context around suitability or long-term effects. For founders, the temptation to follow these cycles is strong – but doing so can dilute a brand’s core philosophy.

True luxury skincare is rooted in skin health. It focuses on barrier integrity, hydration balance, and ingredient compatibility rather than aggressive transformation. This approach may not always produce dramatic overnight results, but it supports resilient, healthy skin over time.

Founders who anchor their brands in skin-first thinking often discover that loyalty follows naturally. Consumers may experiment initially, but they return to products that respect their skin rather than overwhelm it.

Personal Learnings from Building GlowBareSkin

Personal Learnings from Building GlowBareSkin

Building GlowBareSkin, a luxury skincare brand from India, reinforced many of these lessons in practice. From formulation decisions to brand positioning, every step required clarity on what the brand would – and would not – stand for.

From the beginning, the focus was on developing a long-term skin health approach rather than chasing short-lived trends. This meant spending more time on ingredient sourcing, prioritising balance over intensity, and ensuring that each product aligned with a broader philosophy of skin wellbeing.

It also meant accepting that growth would be gradual, shaped by trust rather than rapid scale. Perhaps the most important learning was that luxury is not about perfection – it is about responsibility: responsibility to the consumer’s skin, to honest communication, and to building products that age well alongside the people who use them

The Global Vision for Indian Luxury Beauty

The Global Vision for Indian Luxury Beauty

Indian beauty brands are increasingly stepping onto the global stage, not by copying international models, but by redefining what premium skincare can look like from India. There is a growing opportunity for brands that blend scientific rigour with a deep understanding of diverse skin types and climates.

The future of Indian luxury skincare lies in this balance – globally informed, locally intelligent, and deeply respectful of skin biology. Brands that succeed will be those that view skincare not as a quick commercial opportunity, but as a long-term commitment to consumer wellbeing.

For founders, the journey is demanding – but deeply rewarding. Building a luxury skincare brand in India is not about chasing trends; it is about building something that lasts. And in an industry driven by trust, longevity may be the most luxurious outcome of all.
