‘UN largely irrelevant’ to major decisions: Jaishankar cites Ukraine, Gulf, calls for Security Council reform

Jaishankar cites Ukraine, Gulf, calls for Security Council reform

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said the United Nations has become ‘largely irrelevant’ to decision-making on major global crises, blaming a gridlocked Security Council whose composition, he argued, no longer reflects the world it is meant to represent.

Speaking at the 5th Kautilya Economic Conclave in New Delhi on Monday, Jaishankar cited the conflicts in Ukraine and the Gulf, crises in Africa and the Covid pandemic while questioning the UN’s effectiveness in responding to major international challenges.

“Where the UN is concerned, it’s obvious to everybody by now that the UN is gridlocked, that if you look at the big issues of the day, whether you look at the conflict in the Gulf, whether you look at the conflict in Ukraine, whether you look at other issues in Africa, or whether you look at COVID, actually the United Nations has been largely irrelevant to the decision-making,” Jaishankar said.

He traced much of the problem to deadlock in the Security Council and argued that the institution has failed to keep pace with the expansion of UN membership.

“The Security Council no longer represents the entirety of the global interest. The UN started with 51 members; it’s got almost four times that number today. So, if you have grown four times and you want to keep the old board of management, it’s not going to work. It’s common sense,” he said.

The UN currently has 193 member states, up from 51 founding members in 1945. The Security Council has 15 members, including five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Jaishankar says countries using Africa to resist reform

Jaishankar also accused some countries of resisting UN reform while invoking Africa’s interests as an argument against change. He did not name the countries.

“The problem is there are a few players, a few countries who are resistant to the reform of the UN, and they are using the name of Africa. They’re using Africa’s interest as an argument to block the reform of the UN,” he said.

Jaishankar said the argument was at odds with Africa having articulated its own position in negotiations over Security Council reform.

“The irony is Africa actually now has a clear position. Africa has actually come to the intergovernmental negotiations and indicated what they would like to see; they’ve laid out their position,” he said.

Africa currently has no permanent seat on the Security Council. The Common African Position seeks greater African representation in both permanent and non-permanent categories.

India formally welcomed the presentation of the African model during intergovernmental negotiations in April and reiterated its support for expanding both categories of Security Council membership.

‘Our job must be to fix the UN’

Despite his criticism, Jaishankar argued against bypassing the institution, saying the objective should instead be to make it more effective.

“We need to see whether we will continue to watch, in a sense, the irrelevance or, I would say, ineffectiveness of the UN,” he said.

“And it’s an important question because we need the UN. The UN has done a big service to the international community. Our job must be to fix the UN, not to work around the UN; the UN itself has to help with that process.”

India has for years sought comprehensive reform of the Security Council and a permanent seat on an expanded body. New Delhi works with Brazil, Germany and Japan through the G4 and with developing countries through the L.69 grouping to press for changes to the Council’s composition.

Changing the Security Council’s structure is a particularly high hurdle. Under Article 108 of the UN Charter, an amendment must receive the support of two-thirds of the General Assembly and then be ratified by two-thirds of UN members, including all five permanent members of the Security Council.

What Your Beauty Routine Can Do for Your Health—and Where Its Limits Begin

Beauty products are usually judged by what can be seen: smoother skin, shinier hair, cleaner teeth, or a more polished appearance. Yet many products used for beauty and personal care also sit surprisingly close to everyday health. Sunscreen can help protect skin from ultraviolet radiation, moisturizers support the skin barrier, and good oral care influences more than the brightness of a smile. The important distinction is knowing where personal care supports health and where marketing begins promising more than a product can realistically deliver. A thoughtful beauty routine starts with function, then considers appearance.

Look Beyond the Beauty Label When Choosing Products

The boundary between beauty and wellness is not always clear. Shampoo is cosmetic, but scalp health can influence how comfortable and manageable hair feels. Moisturizer changes appearance while also helping dry skin retain moisture. Oral-care products may improve freshness while supporting daily hygiene.

That overlap has encouraged some companies to position personal-care products within a broader wellness philosophy. Melaleuca: the Wellness Company, for example, has built a product portfolio around wellness and household categories while emphasizing quality and value in how its products are positioned.

For consumers, the larger lesson is to evaluate what a product actually does rather than relying on the category printed on its packaging. Start with the problem you are trying to address. Then examine ingredients, directions, potential sensitivities, and whether the claimed benefit is realistic.

A product does not become healthier simply because it carries the language of wellness.

Treat Skin Care as Barrier Care First

Skin is not merely a surface to make look smoother. It performs important protective functions, and an aggressive beauty routine can sometimes work against them.

Frequent exfoliation, harsh cleansing, or layering too many active ingredients may leave some people with irritation, dryness, or sensitivity. Adding more products is not necessarily the solution.

A simpler routine often begins with cleansing appropriate for the individual’s skin, moisturizing when needed, and sun protection. Additional products can then address particular concerns without turning every morning and evening into an experiment.

Pay attention to how the skin responds. Burning, persistent redness, swelling, or worsening irritation should not be interpreted as proof that a product is “working.”

People with persistent acne, eczema-like symptoms, unexplained rashes, or other significant skin concerns may benefit from professional evaluation rather than repeatedly switching cosmetic products in search of a solution.

Make Sun Protection Part of Beauty Maintenance

Many beauty routines focus on correcting visible changes after they appear. Sun protection takes the opposite approach.

Ultraviolet exposure contributes to premature skin aging and can damage skin over time. That makes sun protection relevant whether someone’s priority is appearance, health, or both.

Sunscreen works best as part of a broader strategy. Shade, appropriate clothing, hats, and avoiding unnecessary intense exposure can contribute as well. When choosing sunscreen, people should look for appropriate broad-spectrum protection and use it according to directions rather than assuming a small amount applied in the morning provides unlimited protection.

Beauty routines sometimes become complicated because people search for products that reverse every visible sign of aging. Protecting the skin consistently may be less exciting than purchasing the newest serum, but prevention deserves a central place in long-term skin care.

Remember That Healthy Hair Begins at the Scalp

Hair products can change texture, shine, volume, and manageability almost immediately. That does not necessarily mean they have changed the health of the hair follicle.

Hair itself can be conditioned and protected from some forms of physical damage, but unexplained changes in hair growth or shedding can involve factors that extend beyond cosmetic care.

The scalp deserves attention too. Product buildup, irritation, excessive dryness, or certain scalp conditions can create discomfort that another styling product will not solve.

Choose cleansing and conditioning products according to actual hair and scalp needs rather than trends alone. Frequent heat styling, tight hairstyles, bleaching, and chemical treatments can also affect hair condition, so technique matters alongside product choice.

Sudden or substantial hair loss deserves a different response from ordinary cosmetic dissatisfaction. Medical conditions, stress, nutritional issues, medications, hormonal changes, and other factors can contribute, making professional assessment more appropriate than relying solely on beauty products.

Be Skeptical When Cosmetics Start Making Medical Promises

The language surrounding beauty has become increasingly scientific. Packaging may refer to cellular processes, detoxification, clinical ingredients, repair, renewal, or other concepts that sound medical.

Scientific language does not automatically make a claim meaningful.

Consumers should distinguish between improving appearance and treating a medical condition. A cosmetic may temporarily make skin look smoother, for example, without altering the underlying cause of a dermatological problem.

The same principle applies to dramatic claims about eliminating toxins, permanently reversing aging, or producing major physiological changes through ordinary topical use.

Look for specific claims rather than impressive vocabulary. Ask what outcome is promised, how quickly it is supposed to occur, and whether that outcome is plausible for the type of product being sold.

When the concern is genuinely medical, qualified healthcare professionals are better sources of diagnosis and treatment than advertising copy.

Give Oral Care a Place in the Beauty Conversation

A bright smile is often treated as an aesthetic goal, but the daily habits behind it have a much broader purpose.

Brushing, interdental cleaning, and appropriate dental care help manage plaque and support oral health. Cosmetic concerns such as staining should come after the fundamentals rather than replacing them.

This distinction matters with whitening. Someone can become focused on tooth color while overlooking sensitivity, gum problems, cavities, or other concerns requiring attention.

More aggressive is not necessarily better. Overusing certain products or applying treatments incorrectly can create problems rather than improving a smile.

Regular dental examinations also provide something beauty products cannot: professional assessment of the teeth and surrounding tissues.

A useful personal-care routine therefore considers what cannot be seen in a mirror. Appearance may motivate someone to pay attention to oral care, but maintaining healthy teeth and gums is the more important long-term objective.

Introduce New Products With More Patience

One reason beauty routines become difficult to troubleshoot is that several products are often introduced at once.

If irritation develops, identifying the cause becomes complicated. The same problem occurs when someone changes cleanser, moisturizer, serum, and makeup simultaneously and then tries to determine which product produced an improvement.

Introducing products gradually makes reactions easier to identify.

Patch testing may also be appropriate for certain products, particularly for people with sensitive skin or a history of reactions. Product directions and warnings deserve attention even when an item is marketed as natural or gentle.

“Natural” should not be treated as a synonym for harmless. Plant-derived substances can still irritate skin or trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

A slower approach may seem less exciting, but it provides better information about what the skin or scalp actually tolerates.

Build a Routine Around Health Instead of Hype

Beauty trends move quickly because novelty sells. A product can dominate social media for several months and then disappear when the next ingredient, device, or routine becomes fashionable.

Your body does not need to follow that schedule.

A sustainable personal-care routine should be based on needs that remain relatively consistent: cleanliness, skin-barrier support, sun protection, oral hygiene, appropriate hair and scalp care, and targeted products for concerns that genuinely matter to you.

Lifestyle matters as well. Sleep, nutrition, hydration, stress management, smoking status, medical conditions, and environmental exposure can all influence aspects of appearance. A cosmetic routine cannot compensate for every factor affecting health.

That does not make beauty products frivolous. Looking after appearance can contribute to comfort, confidence, self-expression, and enjoyable daily rituals. The problem begins when cosmetic products are expected to perform jobs they were never designed to do.

The healthiest approach is therefore neither rejecting beauty products nor buying every product marketed as wellness. It is understanding the difference between appearance, personal care, prevention, and medical treatment. Once those boundaries are clear, choosing products becomes less about chasing promises and more about building a routine that genuinely supports how you want to look and feel.

Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari warns Mamata Banerjee ahead of Nandigram bypoll

Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari warns Mamata Banerjee ahead of Nandigram bypoll

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday escalated the political row over Mamata Banerjee’s 2021 leg injury, warning the former chief minister that more medical documents could be disclosed if she or her legal team pursued the matter further.

According to The Indian Express, Adhikari’s remarks came shortly after Banerjee issued a legal notice to SSKM Hospital and the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences, demanding an explanation over the alleged unauthorised disclosure of her medical records related to the Nandigram incident.

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari appeared to caution Banerjee against pursuing the issue further, saying that he could make additional records, including X-ray plates and MRI reports, public if required.

“Do not poke around too much. If I start showing the X-ray plates and MRI reports, you will not be able to step out of your house,” he said.

Adhikari also claimed that the documents in his possession were not sourced from SSKM Hospital, while declining to immediately disclose how he obtained them.

“If necessary, I will say where I got the records from. The papers were not at SSKM. They were not supposed to be at SSKM,” he said, adding that Banerjee’s legal team should not “dig too deep” into the issue.

He further claimed that Banerjee had retained several documents in her office at Nabanna, saying she had expected to return as chief minister for a fourth term. Adhikari did not clarify whether the medical records he referred to had been obtained from Banerjee’s office or her residence.

The latest exchange follows Adhikari’s recent allegation that Banerjee had fabricated her leg injury during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election campaign in Nandigram. It also comes a day ahead of the Nandigram bypoll—once a hotly contested seat between Adhikari and Banerjee which is going to the polls again after Adhikari vacated the seat to retain the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, defeating the TMC supremo in her home turf.

Though the Nandigram Assembly bypoll, scheduled for October 6, has 16 candidates in the fray, it is set to see a straight contest between BJP’s Hasirani Rath and Congress’ Milan Pradhan, who has been granted interim bail by the Calcutta High Court to fight the election.

The bypoll has also drawn attention after TMC’s initial nominee withdrew, with the party subsequently backing Pradhan, who was arrested on September 18 in connection with several criminal cases dating back to the 2007 Nandigram anti-land-acquisition movement.

According to The Indian Express, at a press conference a few days ago, Adhikari displayed a document that he identified as a March 11, 2021, report from the Department of Radio Diagnosis at the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences. According to Adhikari, the report did not indicate any fracture.

He had also announced that the state government would initiate a fresh inquiry into what he described as Banerjee’s “false claims” regarding the leg injury during the 2021 election campaign.

Banerjee’s legal team subsequently sought answers from the hospitals over the alleged disclosure of her medical information. The notice sought an explanation on how Banerjee’s medical records allegedly came into Adhikari’s possession and how they were subsequently made public.

14,000-ft plunge, silent cockpit, fighter jets: Why Israel was prepared to shoot down flydubai plane carrying 150+ Israelis

Why Israel was prepared to shoot down flydubai plane carrying 150+ Israelis

Israel was prepared to consider shooting down a flydubai passenger aircraft carrying more than 150 Israelis after an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked Indian captain Smit Machchhar in the cockpit, according to CBS News.

Two Israeli sources with direct knowledge of the situation told the broadcaster that Israel has a long-established procedure for dealing with a possible 9/11-style hijacking and was ready to act if the aircraft posed a threat to populated areas.

The incident occurred last week when the flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv was allegedly attacked by co-pilot Hammam Al-Hammami with a crash axe. The aircraft subsequently plunged around 14,000 feet, raising concerns that it could have been taken over.

Israeli Air Force scrambled fighter jets

Following the sudden descent, the Israeli Air Force attempted to establish contact with the cockpit but received no response, according to CBS News.

A command centre was set up and Israeli airspace was closed as fighter jets were scrambled to assess the situation.

The Israeli aircraft were later recalled after the passenger plane changed course towards Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia subsequently scrambled its own fighter jets as the aircraft headed towards its territory.

The situation eventually changed after Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. Israeli passengers and flydubai personnel then entered the cockpit and restrained the co-pilot.

What would Israel have done?

According to CBS News, Israel has a specific procedure for dealing with an aircraft suspected of being hijacked and maintaining radio silence.

If the aircraft had approached within a certain distance of Ben Gurion International Airport, Israeli fighter jets could have entered Jordanian airspace to intercept and assess the situation.

The pilots would have attempted to establish visual contact with the cockpit and determine what was happening inside the aircraft. Their assessment would then have been relayed to the Israeli Air Force and a pre-established committee.

If the committee determined that the aircraft had been hijacked and the suspected hijackers remained unresponsive, the matter could have been escalated to the Israeli prime minister and defence minister.

Israel has a policy allowing a rogue aircraft to be shot down in extreme circumstances, although only the prime minister can authorise such an action.

The Israeli sources told CBS News that such a decision could be considered if authorities believed the aircraft was likely to crash into a high-value target, including the Azrieli buildings or Ben Gurion Airport.

Co-pilot under investigation in UAE

Al-Hammami is currently in the United Arab Emirates, where he is undergoing a second round of questioning after initially being interrogated by Saudi authorities following the aircraft’s emergency landing.

Israel has sent representatives to the UAE to participate in the investigation.

According to The Jerusalem Post, investigators found that Al-Hammami had researched airlines operating flights to Israel and had visited the country months before the cockpit incident.

“I tried to get hired by all the airlines,” he reportedly told investigators. “I checked which ones flew to Tel Aviv. That’s why I chose flydubai. I planned [the operation] even before I was hired.”

The reports have also raised questions over how Al-Hammami was able to operate a flight to Israel despite concerns about his background. Israel and Oman do not have diplomatic relations, and reports have said that pilots operating flights to Israel are required to hold passports from countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic relations.

The case has also brought scrutiny on Israel’s Mossad and Shin Bet over the vetting process surrounding foreign airline crew members operating flights to the country.

Govt reschedules GST Council meet to 8 October citing ‘unavoidable circumstances’

Govt reschedules GST Council meet to 8 October citing ‘unavoidable circumstances’

The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, originally scheduled for October 7, has been postponed to October 8 due to “unavoidable circumstances”, according to an Office Memorandum issued by the GST Council Secretariat on Monday. The meeting will be held from 11 am onwards at the Summit Room, Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

The memorandum, dated October 5, was issued with the approval of the Revenue Secretary, who is also the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council. The Secretariat has requested that the change in schedule be brought to the attention of members of the GST Council.

The Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state finance ministers, is set to meet after more than a year.

The 56th GST Council meeting was held on September 3-4, 2025, during which the Centre and states decided on a major restructuring of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates and slabs.

Effective September 22, 2025, GST was changed to a two-tier structure of 5% and 18%, with a highest 40% rate for ultra-luxury and sin goods. This replaced the four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% that had been in place since July 1, 2017.

Schneider Electric to buy US software firm PTC in $22.6 billion deal

Schneider Electric to buy US software firm PTC in $22.6 billion deal

France’s Schneider Electric struck its biggest deal ever on Monday, agreeing to buy US software company PTC for around $22.6 billion as it builds up its data centre business amid booming demand.

However, the French engineering company’s shares fell nearly 10% in early Paris trading as investors weighed the size of the acquisition, the big premium offered for the shares and the outlook for software companies’ valuations amid AI-related market uncertainty.

Up to Friday’s close, Schneider’s shares were up 29% year-to-date, before Monday’s losses wiped off close to €15 billion ($17 billion) from its market capitalisation.

“AI disruption fears are still weighing on software valuations, which allows acquiring PTC at a decade low valuation but could still weigh on Schneider post deal,” Jefferies said in a note to investors.

Berenberg analyst Nay Soe Naing told Reuters the deal presented a healthy valuation amid a compressed valuation environment and challenging investor sentiment across the software space.

PTC shares jumped 34.4% in US premarket trading.

BACKBONE OF DATA CENTRE BUILD-UP

Schneider, once known primarily for industrial components like fuses and circuit breakers, now builds the backbone of data centres, supplying everything from cooling units and server racks to critical power distribution equipment.

The PTC acquisition would expand its industrial software and AI business by adding the Boston-based company’s product-design and lifecycle-management software to its offering.

Schneider CEO Olivier Blum told investors that PTC’s engineering and design data would strengthen Schneider’s ability to deploy AI across customers’ industrial operations.

“Data is becoming a very critical layer” for extracting value from AI, as the technology requires closer links between data and the software used to contextualise it, Blum said in the conference call.

The combination would lift Schneider’s software-as-a-service revenue to about 24% of group total, accelerating its push beyond electrical equipment and automation into higher-growth, recurring-revenue software, he added.

Booming demand for data centres, particularly from the US, is driving Schneider’s earnings, offering a growing source of revenue that is helping it offset weakness in some traditional electrical-equipment markets.

PTC, which provides software solutions for designing, manufacturing and servicing products across multiple sectors, has also benefited from growing demand for its AI-powered tools.

Monday’s deal follows Schneider’s June agreement to buy Cognite Holding, a privately held provider of AI software and industrial data.

DEAL DETAILS

The transaction would be Schneider’s largest-ever acquisition and one of the biggest in Europe this year, according to LSEG data.

It would be financed through an issuance of new shares worth €5 billion to €6 billion under an existing shareholder authorisation, and new debt of €16 billion to €17 billion.

The $205-per-share offer implies an enterprise value of $23.7 billion for PTC and represents a 42.3% premium to its last closing price.

France’s third-highest-valued listed company expects the deal to generate €250 million in annual run-rate cost savings by the third year after closing, alongside about €800 million in revenue synergies.

The acquisition is expected to close by the third quarter of 2027, subject to approvals from PTC shareholders and regulators.

“My skin feels dry…” 5 NG habits adults often fall into 🫧|のりたま │ 大人美容手帖

“I feel like my skin is drier than before.”

“My foundation doesn’t go on smoothly. 🥲”

“I’m doing my skincare properly, but it still feels flaky…”

When that happens, wait a second before buying a new serum!

One way to start is by reviewing your daily skincare habits. ☺️

This time, I’ve summarized 5 habits you should review when you’re concerned about adult dryness. ♡

1. Not sealing it in.

“I applied toner after my bath, so my beauty routine for today is done!”

……Are you doing this?

Applying toner is important, but if you’re worried about dryness, combining it with milky lotion or cream is also an option.

The level of moisture you need changes depending on your skin condition and the season.

🌷 What you can do first

✔ If toner alone leaves you dry, try milky lotion or cream
✔ Adjust the amount between morning and night
✔ If you don’t like stickiness, start with something light

The point is not to “apply as much as possible,” but to find the amount that is just right for your skin.

⸻

2. Washing your face with hot water

Hot water on a cold day feels like,

“Ahhh, I’m coming back to life! ♨️”

However, when washing your face, it’s recommended to avoid water that is too hot and use lukewarm water instead.

🌷 The motto for adult beauty

“A comfortable temperature” and “a skin-friendly temperature” are different things

⸻

3. Scrubbing while cleansing or washing your face

When removing makeup, are you putting too much force into it, thinking, “I have to get it all off!”?

However, you want to avoid rubbing more than necessary when cleansing or washing your face.

🌷 Things to be conscious of

✔ Do not rub your skin hard
✔ Lather your face wash thoroughly
✔ Do not scrub when wiping with a towel

Don’t scrape your skin before you remove the dirt.

⸻

4. Leaving it alone after a bath

Some people feel their skin dries out easily after a bath, so you want to get into the habit of moisturizing as soon as possible.
However, it’s a no-go when you’re still sweating!
Your precious beauty ingredients will just come off with the sweat.

Wait until your body heat has cooled down before moisturizing.

If you can’t stand not moisturizing right away, it’s a good idea to quickly spray on a mist-type moisturizer.

After that,
the order is toner → serum → milky lotion → cream.

⸻

5. Changing your skincare every time you see it on social media

This is also a common occurrence in adult beauty.
You can’t judge for yourself which one is good, and while you’re searching on social media, a mountain of products appears 💦

“This serum seems good ♡” → Purchase 💸

“This one is popular too!” → Purchase 💸

“Wait, this cream too…” → Purchase again 💸

Before you know it, your bathroom sink is a disaster 😇

Of course, trying new products isn’t bad in itself.

But if you keep changing them before you see any results, it becomes hard to judge what actually suits you.

First,

starting by “using what you currently have with care” is enough.

⸻

🌸 Summary

You don’t have to change everything at once ♡

Start with just one of these five.

🫧 Things you can do starting today

□ Use lukewarm water for face washing
□ Don’t scrub
□ Moisturize quickly after a bath
□ Consider milky lotion or cream if toner alone leaves you dry
□ Don’t change your skincare too often

It’s okay if you can’t do everything.

Beauty isn’t a test,
so you don’t have to get a perfect score ☺️

⸻

💕 If you’re worried about dryness, “review” before you “add”

When it comes to beauty,

“I’ll buy a new serum!”

“I’ll use a more expensive cream!”

is how we tend to think.

But actually, before that,

review whether you’ve been careless with your current care.

Just doing that might change your daily beauty routine a little.

And when you do incorporate something new,

don’t choose it because “everyone else is using it,”
but choose it by asking, “Do I need this right now?”

This is what Noritama considers
adult beauty without trying too hard 🌷

Just doing that might change your daily beauty routine a little.

And when you do incorporate something new,

don’t choose it because “everyone else is using it,”
but choose it by asking, “Do I need this right now?”
