Your baby's first skincare routine: Simple daily habits for soft, healthy skin

Your baby’s first skincare routine: Simple daily habits for soft, healthy skin

With so many different lotions and potions on the shelves, it’s
hard to know what you do and don’t need for your baby. But when it
comes to skincare, less is definitely more, says health visitor
Tracey Stone.

‘Babies’ skin is very different to adult skin. It’s much
thinner, and more delicate. It’s also still learning how to protect
itself during the first few months of your little one’s life,’ she
explains.

A newborn’s skin in particular is very thin and easily damaged.
For at least the first month, as their skin develops its natural
protective barrier, you should bathe your baby using only plain
water and avoid using products on their skin. This includes
moisturisers, medicated wipes and skin cleansers.

As your baby’s skin develops and matures, their skincare routine
can change and you may want to introduce some gentle
products.

Here are six simple habits that can help keep your baby’s skin
soft and healthy.

1. Choose skincare products designed specifically for
babies

Whether it’s bath washes or nappy creams, if you choose to use
products, it’s best to opt for gentle choices designed specifically
for babies. ‘These are less likely to irritate your baby’s delicate
skin and can help protect their natural skin barrier,’ says
Tracey.

AVEENO® Baby products are specially formulated for babies. They
can help nourish and protect their sensitive skin and are
paediatrician and dermatologist tested.

2. Avoid heavily scented bubble baths

© Shutterstock

It may surprise some parents to hear that babies don’t need a
bath every day. ‘Normally two to three times a week is enough,’
says Tracey. On days you’re skipping the bath, simply wash your
baby’s face, hands, neck and nappy area.

If you and your baby enjoy bath time, though, there’s no harm in
bathing them more often. Just ensure you:

  • Use warm water, not
    hot
  • Use plain water or a
liquid cleanser that’s suitable for babies
  • Avoid heavily scented
bubble baths and lotions as they can cause irritation

If you choose to use bath products, AVEENO®
Baby Daily Care Gentle Bath & Wash is suitable from the first
few weeks of your baby’s life.

Formulated with Colloidal Oatmeal, it gently cleanses skin,
leaving it feeling moisturised. Containing aloe and chamomile, it’s
pH-balanced to avoid disrupting your baby’s skin pH levels.

For very dry skin, AVEENO
Baby Dermexa™ Moisturising Wash is specially formulated for
babies prone to irritation, itchiness and eczema.

3. Moisturise dry skin if needed

‘If your baby has dry or sensitive skin, applying a gentle,
fragrance-free moisturiser after a bath can help keep their skin
soft and hydrated,’ says Tracey.

However, she notes that not all babies need moisturiser every
day. Instead she says it’s best to use it when your baby’s skin
looks dry or feels like it needs some extra hydration.

The type of moisturiser you use can also depend on your baby’s
skin type.

Normal to dry skin

AVEENO®
Baby Daily Care Moisturising Lotion is nourishing and
non-greasy. It’s clinically proven to moisturise and protect for 24
hours.

Very dry and itchy skin

AVEENO Baby Dermexa™ Emollient Cream is designed for babies
prone to regular irritation, itchiness or eczema. Immediately
soothing and moisturising, it’s enriched with ceramides to help
strengthen the skin barrier function.

4. Change nappies as soon as possible

Nappy rash is common in babies and can cause dryness and red or
sore spots. To help prevent and treat it:

  • Change wet or dirty
    nappies promptly to reduce irritation
  • Keep the skin in the
    nappy area clean and dry
  • Leave your baby’s
    nappy off when possible
  • Clean skin with water
or fragrance- and alcohol-free baby wipes

You may also want to use a barrier cream like AVEENO® Baby
Daily Care Nappy Cream. Suitable for sensitive and delicate
skin, as well as babies who may be prone to eczema, it soothes and
provides immediate comfort.

Clinically proven to protect against causes of nappy rash, the
formula contains oat extract and zinc oxide, which is known to
create a breathable barrier to protect the skin.

If you’re worried about your baby’s nappy rash, speak to a
healthcare professional.

© Aveeno

5. Keep babies out of the sun

Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight to
protect their delicate skin.

You should avoid using sunscreen on babies younger than six
months. Instead, keep your baby in the shade by attaching a
parasol or sunshade to their buggy or pram when you’re out and
about. Avoid placing a blanket over their buggy though, as this can
cause them to overheat.

If possible, avoid the hottest part of the day, between 11am and
3pm, when the sun is at its strongest.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for
advice

Your baby’s skin will naturally change and develop during their
first year, so occasional dryness or rashes can happen. They’re
often completely normal, but if you’re worried, or your baby’s skin
seems painful, infected or isn’t improving, speak to your GP,
health visitor or pharmacist. They can help you find the most
appropriate treatment and give you peace of mind.

Which body lotion is best for dry skin? 8 top-rated hydrating options on Amazon to keep your skin soft and smooth

Which body lotion is best for dry skin? 8 top-rated hydrating options on Amazon to keep your skin soft and smooth

Body lotion becomes especially important as winter sets in and skin starts feeling tight, itchy, or flaky. Cold air outside and constant indoor heating reduce humidity, which slowly strips away the skin’s natural lipid barrier. This barrier is responsible for holding moisture and protecting skin from external irritants. Once it weakens, water loss increases, leading to cracks, rough skin and sensitivity.

Dry skin fix: Hydrating body lotions that keep skin soft and comfortable. (Adobe Stock )

Seasonal changes call for a shift in skincare priorities. Lightweight summer formulas may no longer provide enough support, making stronger moisture protection necessary. Body lotions are water-based formulations made with a blend of water, oils, and emulsifiers. Their lighter texture allows for quick absorption without feeling greasy, making them suitable for daily use across various skin types, including oily or acne-prone skin, according to dermatologist Dr Kisalay Saurav, as told to HealthShots. When chosen carefully and used consistently, body lotion helps restore comfort, support barrier repair, and reduce winter-related skin discomfort.

Benefits of using body lotion for dry skin:

Using a body lotion does more than add surface moisture. It helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance, preventing dryness, flakiness, and irritation by locking in hydration and strengthening the skin’s protective layer. Aesthetic Physician Dr Akanksha Singh Cornuit tells HealthShots that body lotions contain emollients and occlusive agents that create a barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss and protecting against environmental stressors such as wind and pollution. Daily use can keep skin smooth, soft, and supple while nourishing it with ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants. For those with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema, they can offer a calming, soothing effect and enhance overall skin health over time.

Beyond hydration, body lotion addresses specific skin concerns, including uneven texture and loss of firmness. Its numerous benefits make it an essential component of a daily skincare routine.

Essential winter skincare tips to keep your skin soft and glowing

Essential winter skincare tips to keep your skin soft and glowing

During the winter season, our body requires extra care, especially the skin, which can easily become dry, itchy, and rough due to cold winds and low humidity.

If you want your skin to remain soft, glowing, and refreshed even in winter, adopting a few simple yet effective precautions can help maintain your daily skincare routine.

Cleansing and bathing:

Proper cleansing and bathing are essential. Long, hot showers may feel comforting during winter but strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and itchiness. Experts recommend using lukewarm water and limiting showers to 10–15 minutes. Immediately after bathing, when your skin is slightly damp, apply a moisturizer or cream to lock in moisture.

Moisturizing and skin protection:

Moisturizing is crucial as cold air draws moisture out of the skin. Use a quality moisturizer containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, or oils. Thick creams or oils are preferable over light, water-based lotions, especially for rough or dry skin. Pay extra attention to hands, elbows, ankles, and other areas most affected by the cold.

Use gentle and mild cleansers for washing. Soaps and fragranced washes can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Opt for sulfate-free, color- and fragrance-free cleansers or cream-based washes.

Use of humidifiers:

Indoor heating, air conditioners, or solar heaters can dry out the air, which in turn dries out the skin. A small humidifier in your room or office can restore moisture to the air, slowing down the drying process of your skin.

Exfoliating dead skin cells:

For a fresh and radiant look, include light exfoliation in your skincare routine but avoid overdoing it. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing new ones to breathe, while a gentle scrub ensures the protective skin layer is not damaged.

Healthy diet and hydration:

Alongside external care, maintaining internal health is equally important. Drinking sufficient water daily helps retain skin moisture, and in dry winter conditions, dehydration can worsen skin dryness. Additionally, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and other nutrients—like fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables—support skin elasticity and radiance.

Protection from ultraviolet rays:

Do not forget sunscreen, regardless of winter or summer! Even when sunlight is weak, UV rays are present. Apply SPF sunscreen before going outdoors, including on snowy or damp days, to protect your skin from UV damage and dryness.

Winter skincare requires effort but is essential. Short lukewarm showers, gentle cleansers, moisturizing creams and oils, humidifiers, a nutritious diet, adequate water intake, soft clothing, and sunscreen together create an environment in which your skin can remain soft, healthy, and glowing despite the cold.

Winter Skincare Essentials: 5 Bangladeshi products to keep your skin soft and glowing Skincare

Winter Skincare Essentials: 5 Bangladeshi products to keep your skin soft and glowing Skincare

Each of these five products is simple to use, bringing noticeable improvements that ensure your skin stays soft, glowing, and protected throughout the season

08 December, 2025, 02:00 pm

Last modified: 08 December, 2025, 03:54 pm

When winter settles in, skin begins to whisper its needs. For some, it means holding on to nourishment despite the cold; for others, it’s about preserving brightness as seasonal dullness quietly creeps in. Then comes the dryness—subtle at first, then unmistakable—as chilly winds and pollution work together to steal moisture.

In a country where dust and pollution are everyday realities, skin care becomes more than a routine; it becomes a form of protection. Pores clog, the skin barrier weakens, and by the time winter arrives, the signs of damage become more visible. The skin loses hydration easily, leaving it tired and vulnerable.

TBS has curated five must-have winter skin and body care products that are both effective and convenient. Each one is simple to use, bringing noticeable improvements that ensure your skin stays soft, glowing, and protected throughout the season.

Moonskin’s Saffron Anti-Aging Soap turns a simple daily bath into a nourishing skincare ritual. Infused with pure saffron extract, it helps boost radiance and even out skin tone.

During winter, skin often feels tight and dehydrated after washing — but the goat milk in this formula provides gentle exfoliation without causing moisture loss, thanks to its natural lactic acid. Almond and coconut oils further support softness and prevent roughness, keeping the skin smooth and healthy-looking.

Designed for both the face and body, the soap creates a soft lather and rinses cleanly without stripping the skin. For anyone seeking brightness and hydration in one step, this soap delivers visible softness and a natural glow, making chilly mornings feel refreshing rather than drying.

2. Aarong Earth Coffee Face and Body Scrub

There’s nothing more satisfying in winter than scrubbing away the rough, dry patches that make skin look tired. Aarong Earth’s Coffee Face and Body Scrub brings a mini spa moment into the everyday shower routine.

Made with finely roasted coffee, it gently buffs away flaky winter skin while awakening the senses with its rich aroma. Olive oil and Vitamin E soften and repair dryness, leaving the skin smooth, nourished, and ready to absorb moisture.

The scrub also helps clear clogged pores affected by pollution and sweat, making the skin appear smoother and instantly refreshed. It is especially beneficial for areas that become rough in winter, such as the elbows, knees, and T-zone. When used regularly — two to three times a week — it boosts blood circulation and supports a healthy winter glow from head to toe. Even a quick scrub in the shower can make the rest of your skincare products work more effectively.

Winter often brings dullness and uneven texture, and this serum is designed to bring back your glow. Organikaon’s Vitamin C Triple Antioxidants Serum combines Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Ferulic Acid to protect the skin from pollution and daily damage — especially in cities like Dhaka. This trio brightens the complexion, boosts collagen, and softens early signs of aging such as fine lines and pigmentation.

It also contains multi-layer Hyaluronic Acid, which delivers hydration to different layers of the skin — a major advantage when winter causes tightness and dry patches. Plant extracts from green tea, licorice, lemongrass, and rose help calm irritation and reduce redness, both of which tend to worsen in cold weather.

With its lightweight, fast-absorbing texture, the serum fits easily into a morning routine and keeps the skin looking fresh, energized, and healthy throughout the day.

The gel absorbs quickly without clogging pores, making it suitable for all skin types — particularly for those who prefer lighter formulations. Used in the morning and before bed, it helps the skin feel clear, soft, and naturally glowing throughout the colder months — proving that hydration doesn’t have to feel sticky or thick to be effective.

"Mistletoe Makeup" Is Winter's Soft & Flirty Beauty Trend

“Mistletoe Makeup” Is Winter’s Soft & Flirty Beauty Trend

It’s cuffing season — you know, the time when even your most man-hating friend is suddenly shacked up (she’ll 100% blame it on the cold weather). But if you haven’t already secured your designated winter cuddle partner, don’t write off your Hallmark ending just yet. Enter: mistletoe makeup, the flirtiest holiday beauty trend that’s basically manifesting a meet-cute for you.

Mistletoe glam swaps out the usual metallic lids and razor-sharp wings for a cozier, more romantic winter vibe — or, as celebrity makeup artist Christian Briceno describes it, “intimate, flushed, and a little mischievous.” Think touchable dewy skin, a hint of micro-shimmer on the eyes, draped red or pink blush, and lips that suggest you’ve definitely been up to something.

The result lands in the sweet spot between “I’m cold” cheeks and a just-been-kissed pout. Everything should feel soft, warm, and a little blurry — like imagining yourself through the rose-tinted glasses of someone falling in love. No wonder mistletoe makeup is becoming the unofficial beauty uniform of holiday situationships.

The “Mistletoe Makeup” Breakdown

Say goodbye to your brushes. This trend is all about lived-in color, applied with your fingers. And, according to Briceno, that starts at the cheeks.

“Red blush gives the most believable ‘I just came in from the cold’ flush,” says Briceno. His go-tos? Rare Beauty’s Grateful, Saie’s Spicy, and Mineral Fusion’s Berry Glow. But if your vibe is more cozy than windswept, he suggests reaching for a pink pigment — like Dior’s 001 Pink or Rose Inc’s Hibiscus — instead.

The one non-negotiable here? Blush placement. Briceno emphasizes “keeping it high on the cheeks and slightly across the nose bridge.” Cream and liquid formulas seal the deal as they melt into the skin and make everything look naturally flushed.

While the cheeks set the mood, your lips are the main character. And, yes, Briceno says you can absolutely use liner with a blurred lip — you just have to rethink it.

Pick a liner one shade deeper than your natural lip tone, sketch slightly inside your natural border, and tap outward until the shape looks softly melted. “The key is diffusion,” he says, “The lips should look bitten rather than painted on.” To finish, lightly dab on a velvety matte formula and repeat the blotting process to diffuse the pigment. The goal isn’t glossy — it’s smudged, like a suggestive wink that someone may have stolen a bit of your lip product.

Keep the rest of the makeup minimal, using a lightweight skin tint and soft-focus finish. Go without eyeliner for this one, and use mascara sparingly. Just a dash of translucent shimmer across the lids is more than enough to get (and keep) their attention.

The Soft & Flirty Aesthetic

Holiday glam normally goes big with metallic lids, dramatic wings, and carved-out cheekbones. But mistletoe makeup is demure. “The shine is subtle, the edges are blurred, and the skin looks alive rather than highlighted,” says Briceno. It channels the innocence of a first kiss — like “shy girl” blush, but for the person who gets excited talking to their crush.

Plus, thanks to the season’s obsession with monochrome tones, the whole look feels approachable, wearable, and quietly magnetic.

Clearly, mistletoe makeup is designed to draw people in, not show off. And honestly? The only issue will be finding enough mistletoe to go around.
