DIY Natural Tinted Lip Sunscreen

For many years now I’ve preached about the benefits of safe sun exposure. The keyword here is safe! And while it has a lot of benefits, sometimes on occasion, I’ll pull out the homemade sunscreen. Many of you have asked for a lip sunscreen with SPF, so I finally got to work in the kitchen and came up with one.

Why You Should Not (and Should) Use Lip Sunscreen

I’m not usually a fan of sunscreen for several reasons. We need the sun to make the hormone vitamin D, have a strong immune system, regulate hormones, and so much more. Even something as seemingly simple as sunglasses can interfere with that signalling by blocking light receptors in the eyes.

Most of the time I’ll either seek shade or cover up once my body has had enough sun for the day. While I think the science is clear on the sun’s benefits, it’s also clear that sunburns are damaging! However, if you live in a really sunny climate and you’re outside a lot, out on the boat, surfing, etc., then sunscreen can be helpful sometimes.

My homemade sunscreen recipe is a fan favorite, but many of you have asked if it can be used on lips. Technically yes, but it might leave a white cast, be hard to apply, and taste kind of funky. Even if you’re not eating it (the ingredients are clean though), small amounts of lip balm still end up in the mouth. But we probably all knew that one kid in grade school who liked eating Chapstick…

Mineral Lip Balm With Sunscreen Ingredients

A lot of the store-bought brands use a whole slew of synthetic ingredients I really don’t want in my mouth (or in my kids’!). Certain UV-blocking ingredients go smoothly onto skin and absorb quickly, which sounds great. However, these sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone and avobenzone are also toxic to coral reefs, which are essential to ocean life and life on Earth. Not to mention what they do to us once they’re absorbed.

This lip sunscreen instead uses non-nano and uncoated zinc oxide. It creates a skin barrier and sits on top of skin/lips, reflecting UV rays. It’s one of the safest UV barriers out there. In fact, it’s one of only two that the FDA considers safe and effective for sunscreen. I don’t always agree with the FDA, but I’m with them on this one. The zinc oxide is at 20%, which translates to roughly 10 SPF when you add up all of the ingredients. 10 SPF may not sound like much, but it blocks about 90% of UV rays.

I’ve also added red raspberry seed oil. It has a slight SPF and it’s full of antioxidants that protect the lips from sun damage. You’ll also find this ingredient in my homemade sunscreen recipe. Shea butter is smooth and creamy, nourishes lips, and helps firm up the lip balm. Beeswax provides a protective layer over the lips.

Lastly, avocado oil provides the bulk of the lip balm and supports collagen to prevent weakened skin cells. Avocado oil also helps calm inflammation, regenerate skin cells, and protect the skin barrier. It’s also rich in carotenoids that offer some UV ray protection.

Tinted Sunscreen Lip Balm

My original sunscreen recipe is white due to the zinc oxide. Some people are ok with a white cast on their lips, but there’s an easy fix. You can add iron oxide and/or mica to give it a bit of color. Mica reflects light so it will give it a little sparkle.

Iron oxides are nature-identical pigments that lend a rich, burgundy red color. Oxides that naturally come straight from the soil also come with lead and other heavy metal contaminants. Things I don’t want in a lip balm! That’s why iron oxides are now made in a lab to be nature-identical.

If you don’t have iron oxide on hand, rose kaolin clay offers a similar effect.

  • Add the beeswax, shea butter, and avocado oil to the top of the double boiler or glass bowl. Stir occasionally until melted.

  • Turn off the heat and add the raspberry seed oil and essential oils.

  • Whisk in the powders: zinc oxide, iron oxide, and mica.

  • Remove from heat and stir occasionally as it cools. The powders will want to sink to the bottom so they’ll need to stay mixed in.

  • Once the lip sunscreen is mostly cooled, but still soft enough to pour, pour the mixture into your containers.

The iron oxide adds a pink color and the mica adds a little sparkle. You can use both or neither, but it will have a white cast without any iron oxide.

Important Note on Photoxic Essential Oils

Certain essential oils can increase the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Needless to say, they should not be used in lip balms! Photoxic essential oils include bergamot, lime, lemon, and grapefruit. Learn more about this topic here.

Celebrity Skincare Expert’s ‘Genius’ Lip Balm Hack Could Save You Hundreds Per Year

James Vivian, a Melbourne-based dermal therapist known for sharing skincare tips on Instagram, in a March 15 video claimed that lip balms have the potential to serve more than their marketed purpose.

The expert said that lip balms can replace anti-aging products that target a specific, delicate area of the face by providing the same hydrating benefits at a more economical price.

Many on the internet corroborated the claim, with one saying they had been using lip balms in the way the skin expert shared for decades and that it made them look like they were in their “40s instead of 70s.”

Another user who tried the trick after Vivian’s video also said it “worked wonderfully.”

James Vivian advocated the use of lip balms as under-eye creams

“As a 42-year-old man who hasn’t spent much time in the sun, really, the area of aging that I’m seeing most on my face is around my eyes,” Vivian said in his video.

The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest on the body, making it particularly prone to dryness, creasing, and premature aging.

Keeping this area hydrated could help minimize the damage, Vivian said, before sharing that he uses no fancy product to achieve the results.

He instead said he swears by using his lip balm to soothe and rejuvenate his under-eyes.

Lip balms are packed with occlusives and emollients — ingredients designed to lock in moisture — which is why Vivian believes they can double as a quick, budget-friendly eye treatment.

Vivian, however, warned against using balms “that fire up the lips” around the eyes.

“The really spicy ones with stimulating ingredients for circulation and plumping, the kind of bee-sting products, I’d keep that away from eye areas,” he said.

He also noted that it’s not a good idea to apply lip balms under makeup, as the thick texture of the product can disrupt concealer and cause creasing.

Jennifer Lopez’s makeup artist, Scott Barnes, encouraged using lip balms under makeup

In a May 2024 video, Barnes claimed one of his most reliable makeup hacks is to use Aquaphor (a balm stick by a company called Eucerin) on his clients’ eyes before proceeding with concealer.

The technique prevents concealers from creasing, caking, or breaking down, especially when someone is filming a music video or a movie that goes on for long hours.

Barnes asked his followers to try the hack and let him know if it worked for them.

The hack was soon tested by Glam Girl Gabi, a renowned beauty influencer and a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist.

“I’m going to try the trick all the freaking way. I’m doing the classic bronzy J.LO smoky eye,” Gabi claimed.

Pointing to the fine lines under her eyes, Gabi said, “I really do have an issue with my concealer creasing.”

After applying the lip balm under her eyes, she proceeded to do a full face of makeup, including concealer, foundation, setting powder, and more.

Gabi looked impressed with how her concealer set under her eyes, thanks to the lip balm towards the end.

“I have tried every d**n hack. I’ve tried every single thing. My under-eyes have never looked better,” she said.

Hours after first doing her makeup, Gabi gave her viewers a video check of whether her eye makeup remained in place.

“They look so much better than they normally look after a few hours. Life-changing, I tell ya,” she shared.

In a separate video, James Vivian warned against spraying perfume directly on the skin

Highlighting people’s habit of spraying fragrances right on their neck, Vivian said it could have long-term consequences.

He explained that applying perfume to the skin can trigger a condition known as Poikiloderma of Civatte.

It is a sun-induced skin condition in which the affected area develops reddish-brown pigmentation, mottled discoloration, and thinning of the skin.

While it is not harmful, it is notoriously difficult to treat once it develops.

Laser treatments, along with diligent sun protection, can help improve appearance, but Vivian stressed prevention is far better than cure.

Many perfumes contain photosensitizing ingredients (citrus oils, oakmoss, and certain synthetics like musk ambrette), which can make the skin more sensitive to UV rays.

When applied to sun-exposed areas like the neck, these ingredients can magnify the effects of sun exposure, accelerating pigmentation changes and even breaking capillaries over time.

Vivian advised using scents on clothes, hair, or covered skin, like under the collarbone, to protect oneself against stubborn pigmentation issues later in life.

“I swear to God, I came up with this on my own one day,” a netizen said

lip butter

Ultra Creamy Lip Butter

Lip balm, lip gloss, lip stick, and now lip butter. I’ve created lots of different natural lip products over the years to replace all the tubes of lip products I used to buy. This lip butter is so simple to make with just a few ingredients and melts like butter on your lips, hence the name!

It’s a little more nourishing than some lip balms so it’s perfect for when you need the extra hydration.

Lip Butter vs Lip Balm

When I first heard the words lip butter I thought it was just a strange name for lip balm. It turns out there are some differences between the two (even if they are more subtle). Lip balm uses a blend of waxes and oils to moisturize the lips. A lip butter can also use some wax and oil, but it also adds in more creamy lip butters.

Shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, and cupuacu seed butter are some of the top favorites here. Butters are thicker than liquid oils but they’re not as hard or waxy as beeswax or candelilla wax. They also have a unique fatty acid profile that’s great for skin and lips.

Lip Butter Ingredients

I’ve kept the ingredients list simple so you don’t have to buy a ton of different oils and butters to make this. Beeswax helps thicken, while cocoa butter and mango butter add that luxurious emollient feeling. I’ve also included some meadowfoam seed oil to make it spreadable and essential oil for scent and added lip benefits.

Mango Butter

First up we have mango butter. I love how smooth and creamy it feels without being too thick. It’s softer than cocoa butter and feels more like shea butter. Mango butter is one of the few butters that has some astringency, so it doesn’t leave skin or lips feeling overly greasy.

You can substitute shea butter, but shea butter does have more of a tendency to get gritty once it’s cooled down. A good way to prevent this from happening is to cool any product made with shea butter in the fridge, instead of room temperature.

Cocoa Butter

I chose cocoa butter because it’s harder and gives the lip butter more thickness without over relying on beeswax. Cocoa butter is high in saturated stearic and palmitic fatty acids and creates a lipid barrier to prevent moisture loss. It also smells amazing with it’s slightly chocolate scent!

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

This liquid carrier oil may not be one you’ve worked with before. It adds a nice lightness to the blend and makes the creamy butters more spreadable on the lips. Meadowfoam seed oil is an emollient to lock in moisture, but is more easily absorbed than heavier carrier oils like olive or avocado oil. If you don’t have any on hand you use any liquid carrier oil you prefer, but it will affect the overall absorption and texture of the lip butter.

Essential Oil

Not only do essential oils make this smell amazing, but they add additional soothing and aromatherapy benefits. Just be sure to choose lip safe essential oils that won’t irritate this delicate area! Oils like cinnamon, lemongrass, clove, and ginger may smell great, but they can cause burns or sensitivity in lip products. And others like lemon and lime can cause phototoxicity (aka burns when exposed to sunlight).

Here are some of my favorite lip safe essential oils to use:

  • Lavender
  • Sweet orange
  • Geranium
  • Mandarin
  • Neroli
  • Rose
  • Spearmint
  • Peppermint

Since the cocoa butter gives this lip butter a chocolatey scent I like using essential oils that smell good with white chocolate. For this batch I used lavender, but peppermint and orange are also really nice with the cocoa butter.

Another important safety note when it comes to essential oils is dilution. In general how much essential oil you use for lip products depends on the exact essential oil. Nothing in the above list is overly harsh, so a good rule of thumb is .5 to 1 percent. This comes to about 5-10 drops in this recipe. It may be tempting to add a whole lot more, but less is usually better when it comes to essential oils!

Here’s how to make your very own lip butter.

Ultra Creamy Lip Butter

This creamy lip butter is super moisturizing and melts on contact to lock in hydration.

  • Add all of the ingredients except essential oils in the top of the double boiler. Heat and stir occasionally until completely melted.

  • Turn off the heat and add the essential oils.

  • Immediately pour into your lip balm containers and let cool completely.

  • Store in a cool, dry place for the best shelf life. This will last about 6-12 months when stored properly.
  • This recipe yields about 13 regular size lip balm tubes.

Tips For Making Lip Butter

Really we’re just adding everything together, melting, and pouring into containers. No multiphase formulas or complicated steps. I have a heat safe glass bowl that I use only for making DIY products and I’ll use that like a double boiler. You can also melt the ingredients in a dedicated Mason jar for easier pouring.

I’ve found that it’s easy to wipe out the wax/butter residue with paper towels after I’ve poured the product into my containers. Don’t go straight for soap and a washcloth to clean up or you’ll have a waxy mess!

Avoid storing your lip butter in hot or humid conditions which will degrade the ingredients faster. This includes leaving it in a hot car or in a bathroom with a steamy shower.
