How often to clean makeup brushes and what to use: Experts verdict on TikTok washing machine hack

They get swiped all over our faces and dipped time and again into product and back onto our skin, and yet, makeup brushes rarely get cleaned as often as they should. But it’s worth finding the time to clean them because they are collecting a lot more than just your blush and eyeshadow.

Cindy Gunawan, Associate Professor at the Australian Institute for Microbiology and Infection, University of Technology Sydney, told nine.com.au that, at the very least, not cleaning makeup brushes leads to “patchy uneven makeup application”.

Your makeup brushes are collecting a lot more than just your blush and eyeshadow. iStockphoto

“Makeup brushes can collect bacteria and fungi, as well as dead skin cells, skin oil (sebum) and dirt,” she said.

“Using dirty brushes transfers this build-up to our face. This can lead to skin irritation, bacterial infections (staph), acne, as well as eye infections (for eye brushes), in particular in individuals with sensitive skin.”

So how often do we need to clean them? Gunawan’s recommendation differs depending on the brush and where it’s used.

“Lip brushes [should be cleaned] after every use; these readily collect dead cells, saliva, and are therefore a potential breeding ground for bacteria in moist environments. Cream/liquid products (foundation, cream blush) [need cleaning] once a week or more often for sensitive skin,” she said.

“Powder products (setting powder, blush) [should be cleaned] once a fortnight/month. Makeup sponges [need cleaning] once a week at minimum and need to be replaced after one to three months. Eye brushes [should be cleaned] ideally every one to two weeks; eyes are prone to infections (pink eye).”

Former makeup artist and beauty content creator Amelia Singson gave a blanket recommendation depending on whether they’re used for business or pleasure.

“Professionals who use them on clients should clean them between clients. For personal use, in a perfect world you’d clean them with a brush cleaner after every use but realistically, they should be cleaned at least once a week,” she said.

Since makeup brushes need regular cleaning many are resorting to a TikTok-famous hack that cleans all your brushes in one go and can be done while you wash your clothes. But this trick may be too good to be true with experts warning it could ruin the brushes, and it can’t be good for the washing machine either.

“I’ve seen this, and I wouldn’t recommend it,” Amelia Singson, former makeup artist and beauty expert, told nine.com.au.

“It seems like the easier option, but it’s a fast way to shorten the life of your brushes. Long-wear makeup can get really embedded into the bristles, and a washing machine may not actually remove all of it.

“You don’t want to be soaking brushes all the way up to the ferrule (handle), as this can loosen the glue and eventually cause shedding.”

As for the washing machine, the makeup that does come off could leave your clothes stained and your appliance filthy.

“The impact on washing machines is more the makeup residue, oil, dyes that may not fully leave the drum, causing colour and oil transfer on the next load, getting caught up in the day to day build up of pipes, waste drains and drum,” Nicole Gibson, laundry expert from Soka Australia, told nine.com.au.

“The issue is you [shouldn’t] use an enzymatic laundry detergent to clean these, so it’s not going to clean and wash away during the cycle very effectively, leaving build up and residue which can then be transferred onto clothing. Team that up with a hot water load, and you are facilitating a stain that is going to be difficult to remove.”

Be careful not to soak the handle, as water can loosen the glue. iStockphoto

So the best way is still cleaning makeup brushes one by one with water and shampoo, dishwashing liquid or a specially designed brush cleaning product. For a budget-friendly option, Singson is a fan of Sunlight soap, which is $4.80 for a 500g pack at Woolworths.

Alcohol-based sprays are easy to use on the go and to clean brushes quickly, but Singson doesn’t recommend it as your sole brush cleaner because “over time they can be drying on delicate bristles”.

To clean brushes, Gunawan recommended these steps:

  1. “Under warm running water, rinse the bristle tips – be careful not to soak the handle, as water can loosen the glue.
  2. Put a small amount of mild soap on our palm, then gently swirl the bristle on our palm to make lather, this should loosen the debris in the bristle.
  3. Rinse under running water, until the water is clear.
  4. Squeeze out excess water with a clean paper towel.
  5. Lay flat to air dry completely; be careful not to put them upright, as water can go into the handle.”

As for makeup sponges, Singson said they are “designed to absorb liquid so they get really filthy, but they’re so easy to clean”.

Here are the steps she recommended:

  1. “Soak your sponge in warm water, add a little cleanser and gently squeeze and massage the sponge until the makeup comes out.
  2. Rinse and squeeze underwater until it runs clear.
  3. Leave it somewhere clean and well-ventilated to dry.”

Celebrity Skincare Expert’s ‘Genius’ Lip Balm Hack Could Save You Hundreds Per Year

James Vivian, a Melbourne-based dermal therapist known for sharing skincare tips on Instagram, in a March 15 video claimed that lip balms have the potential to serve more than their marketed purpose.

The expert said that lip balms can replace anti-aging products that target a specific, delicate area of the face by providing the same hydrating benefits at a more economical price.

Many on the internet corroborated the claim, with one saying they had been using lip balms in the way the skin expert shared for decades and that it made them look like they were in their “40s instead of 70s.”

Another user who tried the trick after Vivian’s video also said it “worked wonderfully.”

James Vivian advocated the use of lip balms as under-eye creams

“As a 42-year-old man who hasn’t spent much time in the sun, really, the area of aging that I’m seeing most on my face is around my eyes,” Vivian said in his video.

The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest on the body, making it particularly prone to dryness, creasing, and premature aging.

Keeping this area hydrated could help minimize the damage, Vivian said, before sharing that he uses no fancy product to achieve the results.

He instead said he swears by using his lip balm to soothe and rejuvenate his under-eyes.

Lip balms are packed with occlusives and emollients — ingredients designed to lock in moisture — which is why Vivian believes they can double as a quick, budget-friendly eye treatment.

Vivian, however, warned against using balms “that fire up the lips” around the eyes.

“The really spicy ones with stimulating ingredients for circulation and plumping, the kind of bee-sting products, I’d keep that away from eye areas,” he said.

He also noted that it’s not a good idea to apply lip balms under makeup, as the thick texture of the product can disrupt concealer and cause creasing.

Jennifer Lopez’s makeup artist, Scott Barnes, encouraged using lip balms under makeup

In a May 2024 video, Barnes claimed one of his most reliable makeup hacks is to use Aquaphor (a balm stick by a company called Eucerin) on his clients’ eyes before proceeding with concealer.

The technique prevents concealers from creasing, caking, or breaking down, especially when someone is filming a music video or a movie that goes on for long hours.

Barnes asked his followers to try the hack and let him know if it worked for them.

The hack was soon tested by Glam Girl Gabi, a renowned beauty influencer and a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist.

“I’m going to try the trick all the freaking way. I’m doing the classic bronzy J.LO smoky eye,” Gabi claimed.

Pointing to the fine lines under her eyes, Gabi said, “I really do have an issue with my concealer creasing.”

After applying the lip balm under her eyes, she proceeded to do a full face of makeup, including concealer, foundation, setting powder, and more.

Gabi looked impressed with how her concealer set under her eyes, thanks to the lip balm towards the end.

“I have tried every d**n hack. I’ve tried every single thing. My under-eyes have never looked better,” she said.

Hours after first doing her makeup, Gabi gave her viewers a video check of whether her eye makeup remained in place.

“They look so much better than they normally look after a few hours. Life-changing, I tell ya,” she shared.

In a separate video, James Vivian warned against spraying perfume directly on the skin

Highlighting people’s habit of spraying fragrances right on their neck, Vivian said it could have long-term consequences.

He explained that applying perfume to the skin can trigger a condition known as Poikiloderma of Civatte.

It is a sun-induced skin condition in which the affected area develops reddish-brown pigmentation, mottled discoloration, and thinning of the skin.

While it is not harmful, it is notoriously difficult to treat once it develops.

Laser treatments, along with diligent sun protection, can help improve appearance, but Vivian stressed prevention is far better than cure.

Image credits: Cultura Creative/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo)

Many perfumes contain photosensitizing ingredients (citrus oils, oakmoss, and certain synthetics like musk ambrette), which can make the skin more sensitive to UV rays.

When applied to sun-exposed areas like the neck, these ingredients can magnify the effects of sun exposure, accelerating pigmentation changes and even breaking capillaries over time.

Vivian advised using scents on clothes, hair, or covered skin, like under the collarbone, to protect oneself against stubborn pigmentation issues later in life.

“I swear to God, I came up with this on my own one day,” a netizen said

Peter Andre’s surprising £45 anti-ageing beauty hack that makes wife call him ‘bonkers’

Need to soften fine lines on your face fast? Unlikely beauty influencer Peter Ande has a trick for that…

Peter has a beauty hack that his wife Emily finds ‘bonkers'(Image: Getty)

We’re used to getting some great skincare tips from celebrities, but what we weren’t expecting this week was to get a handy anti-ageing hack from Peter Andre.

The singer, 53, just revealed her turns to hydrogel eye patches to prep his skin before going on camera, all in a bid to “soften” fine lines and skin texture. The exact product he uses is Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Hydra-Gel Eye Patches – so not just any old product, other – an expert-approved one.

Writing on Instagram, Peter says: “Right, Emily’s been laughing at me, but I just said that I know these take the puffiness out of the [under] eyes, because we have an interview today. But I’ll put it up here as well, so it softens the skin. Am I the only one who does this? She thinks I’m bonkers. I am.”

Peter’s hack may not be the most budget-friendly one, considering how many under-eye patches he has to use to give near-full upper face coverage (six, to be exact), but he is onto something when he says they help prep his skin. Since these Peter Thomas Roth patches, on sale for £45 for 30 pairs, are infused with hyaluronic acid, ceramides and collagen, they will make under-eyes (and, err, foreheads) look more plump and hydrated quite fast.

Peter’s beauty hack isn’t quite as ‘bonkers’ as it looks(Image: Instagram)

However, Peter would have been better off using the brand’s dedicated Water Drench Hyaluronic Gel Face Mask, which costs £61 but has the same hydrating and plumping ingredients, blended into a gel made for full-face application. Plus, a pot will last you through many more applications than using six patches at once will.

Peter isn’t the only celeb turning to eye patches before a big day of filming. Last year, the Married at First Sight UK cast all went viral after many were filmed for the show wearing various versions of hydrogel patches. Bride Leah, in particular, was rarely seen without them for morning filming.

One user on the Holy Church of MAFS Facebook group penned in the comment section of a post dedicated to these under-eye patches: “I’m so happy someone else is talking about this because I was wondering what they are!”

MAFS watchers want to know what these gold under-eye patches are (Image: Channel 4)

Another simply responded with: “Eye slugs,” while a third weighed in with: “I had to ask my daughter what they are– are they a sponsor?!”

We can confirm that the patches that were used by Leah and Davide are Grace & Stella’s gold Under-Eye Masks, £17.95 for 24 pairs on Amazon. Infused with plumping and hydrating hyaluronic acid, these little gold slugs promise to deliver camera-ready under-eyes in 20 minutes by priming the area, reducing puffiness and plumping the look of fine lines.

Explaining further, another Facebook user sheds light on why they’re so visible in this series: “Davide did an Instagram Live saying they get given to them by the production team because their roll calls for the dinner party would start at 6 am.”

Whether Peter is a MAFS fan or has just worked this trick out for himself, we’re certain of one thing: he’s definitely not bonkers– just skincare savvy.

Searches for ‘side straw’ beauty hack surge as anti-wrinkle trend goes viral

Searches for ‘side straw’ beauty hack surge as anti-wrinkle trend goes viral

Social media users are exploring everyday habits believed to influence skin ageing, according to new search analysis

Search interest in the so-called “side straw” beauty hack is soaring online as social media users look for small lifestyle habits that may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

New search data from skincare brand The Derma Lab suggests growing curiosity around the trend, with searches for “side straw” reaching around 72,000 in the past month and rising 38% over the past quarter.

The viral hack refers to drinking through a straw positioned at the side of the mouth rather than the centre.

Supporters of the idea believe it may reduce repeated lip puckering – a movement often linked with the development of fine lines around the mouth.

While the concept has circulated in beauty discussions for years, experts say social media has recently helped bring the technique back into the spotlight as people look for simple, everyday habits that might influence skin ageing over time.

According to Elizabeth Japal of The Derma Lab, the surge in search interest reflects a wider shift towards preventative beauty habits.

“We are seeing more people looking into everyday behaviours that might influence their skin over time,” Japal said.

“Search interest around things like sleep positions, facial movements and now the ‘side straw’ technique reflects a wider shift towards preventative beauty habits and understanding how daily routines may affect the skin.”

The area around the mouth is one of the most active parts of the face, constantly involved in speaking, eating and drinking, which is why many skincare conversations focus on this region.

Industry professionals say consumers are increasingly researching ways to maintain hydration and support skin elasticity as part of their regular routines.

In some cases, aesthetic treatments such as Dermal Filler are used to address lines that develop from repeated facial movement and natural volume loss.

The surge in searches around the “side straw” technique highlights how viral beauty trends can shape online behaviour, particularly when they centre on small lifestyle changes people can easily adopt.

As preventative skincare continues to grow in popularity, experts expect curiosity around everyday habits and facial movements to remain a key driver of online beauty conversations.

Blonzing, the new makeup technique, is taking over the beauty feeds with its sun-kissed glow this season. Here’s why it flatters nearly every skin tone.

Blonzing’ Is The Glow Shortcut Beauty Creators Don’t Want You To Know Yet. A Two-in-One Trick Giving Faces That Celebrity-Level Radiance (Image-AI)

By the time a makeup hack becomes a viral must-try, it has usually travelled through countless creators, celebrity GRWMs and backstage artists. What starts as a quiet trick used by professionals quickly turns into a global obsession, shaping the way millions approach their daily routines.

Each trend managed to crack the code for soft radiance and effortless warmth. Yet now, as 2025 comes to an end, one word has suddenly managed to take over GRWMs, tutorials and beauty breakdowns alike. It’s the hack everyone swears by, the technique that feels both new and obvious once you see it in action: Blonzing.

The internet’s latest obsession may sound like a typo, something accidentally typed between rushed captions and quick edits, but the results are camera-friendly. Blonzing, a clever mix of blush and bronzing, is the art of merging warmth and colour in an effortless sweep.

Online observers first noticed the shift when celebrity makeup artists began quietly sharing their method: mixing warm-toned blush with bronzer to create a sunburnt but sculpted finish. Before long, global celebrities from red-carpet regulars to natural-glam icons appeared with that warm finish across the temples, cheeks, and nose bridge.

The fascination was immediate for every budding and experienced makeup enthusiast; the technique did not rely on sharp contour lines or overly diffused blush. Instead, it created a glow like the kind earned from a weekend by the sea or an impromptu road trip in mellow sunlight.

A Closer Look At The Blonzing Technique

As blonzing combines the words blush and bronzing, the technique merges the depth of the bronzer and the vibrance of the blush to create a dewy finish. Instead of defining and brightening separately, it bridges both steps into one application.

Why does it work?

  • Blonzing deepens the high points
  • Adds warmth around the cheekbones and temples
  • Delivers a subtle flush across the bridge of the nose

Traditional bronzing focuses on sculpting – warming the perimeters of the face. Blush aims to add freshness. When both the products are combined intentionally, the effect takes a different edge; it becomes multi-dimensional, brightening while sculpting, warming while lifting.

The Rise of The Bronzing Technique

A beauty technique always manages to score the goal every few seasons to redefine the way people approach glow. In 2024, the beauty industry was dominated by “Skin streaming”, which encouraged minimalism. Before that, “latte makeup” dominated feeds with its creamy, monochromatic finish. By the end of 2025, however, the tide had shifted toward warmth. That is how Blonzing stepped into the spotlight.

Makeup artists had already been blending bronzers and blushes backstage to customise tones for decades now. But this time, the technique gained a name, and the moment it became a labelled trend, creators and celebrities alike embraced it, turning it into a global aesthetic movement.

Bollywood and Hollywood celebrities like Ananya Panday, Suhana Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber have often been seen facing the camera with this dewy finish on their face.

What truly propelled the trend was its inclusivity. Viewers and makeup observers noticed that the technique worked on a variety of skin tones, and the secret is the balance between undertones. When rose, apricot, or coral hues melt into golden or caramel bronzers, they present a natural flush that sunlight creates on the skin. This not only made the technique accessible but also relatable and instantly shareable.

How To Blonze: Step-By-Step Technique

Choose the right shades– The technique depends entirely on undertone synergy.

Fair skin: peach, petal pink blush and honey or light gold bronzer

Medium skin: coral, terracotta blush and caramel or amber bronzer

Deep skin: berry, brick blush and bronze, copper, or deep golden bronzers

Beauty brands have now begun releasing blonzing palettes to eliminate the guesswork, duos or trios designed specifically for blending.

Placement– Unlike traditional application, blonzing does not separate blush and bronzer zones. Instead, it sweeps across the face in a soft, sunlit pattern.

The recommended placement mirrors natural sunlight:

  • High points of cheeks
  • Across the nose bridge
  • Lightly onto the temples
  • A touch on the forehead and chin

Texture– Creams and liquids blend seamlessly and are considered great for beginners or dewy-glam lovers. Powders offer control and longevity for oily skin types. The rule is simple: use matching formulas. Cream with cream, powder with powder. Mixing textures may create patchiness.

Less Is Always More– Blonzing is not about intensity; it is about believable warmth. A light hand, buffed gradually, is key. The moment the colour becomes too heavy, the effect shifts from “sunlit” to overly saturated.

Difference Between Bronzing and Blonzing

While the two words may sound similar, they are completely different.

Bronzing is a technique that adds warmth to the skin, depth, defines and contours and focuses on the structure. Bronzing mimics a tan and sharpens the face. On the other hand, blonzing merges colour and warmth, adds radiance and dimension, creates a dewy look and looks more lived-in and natural.

Bronzing enhances and blonzing blends the products and creating a sun-kissed finish. It blurs the line between structure and freshness.

Why Is Everyone Obsessed With Blonzing

It works across ages and skin types– The technique does not rely on heavy contour or sharp lines, making it flattering and easy to use.

Embraces multi-use products– The beauty world is slowly and steadily shifting towards hybrid formulas. Blonzing fits with the new shift.

Aligns with minimalist beauty– People want routines that simplify and do not complicate. Blonzing removes the need for using multiple layers.

The technique looks photogenic– The glow of blonzing resembles the golden-hour lighting, which is delicate and defined.

A Trend That’s More Than A Trend

Despite its viral status, blonzing is not just a regular trend; it represents a shift in the beauty industry. People are moving from sculpted perfection to radiance. From heavily contoured cheekbones to sun-softened warmth, blonzing is not about following a trend; it’s about rediscovering glow that feels effortless and authentic.

‘Eye Wig’ Eyeshadow Hack: Would You Try The New Beauty Trend Making Waves On TikTok?

A new beauty trend on TikTok is causing quite a stir. It’s called the ‘eye wig’ — yes, a wig for your eyelids. This innovative eyeshadow hack promises beautifully defined eyes but makeup-free eyelids all day, without the struggles of applying eyeshadow.

The buzz began when beauty creator Nicole Fay shared her try-on video, which quickly went viral. The clip has racked up 6.9 million views, 420,000 likes and more than 3,000 comments, sparking debate across the platform about whether this unusual product is genius or gimmick.

The ‘Eye Wig’ Eyeshadow Hack

Fay followed the tutorial at the start of her video and showcased the product with visible excitement. ‘Okay, ’cause I need to try this. ‘Cause… what? I waited like a month for this to arrive. This is basically an eyeshadow wig, and it’s really good for girls who aren’t great at eyeshadow, like me. So I want to try this because if it’s legit, this is such a great little hack. Did you see how her eyes came out? It looks like eyeshadow! But let’s put this to the test, because I don’t know.’

She explained that there are three different styles to choose from and that she had ordered the Hazel Halo with half lashes. At first, the product looked a little odd, but after trimming the ‘wig’ to fit her eyelids, it began to work.

‘It’s looking a little scary right now, but I think they’re a good fit for my eyes. I’m going to finish the rest of my face and then come back. Okay, give me a second. Are you ready for the final reveal?’

Once her full glam was complete, the result was striking. Fay laughed at her own reflection:

‘Ah, it’s cute. I like it. Does it look like there’s something on my eyelid that shouldn’t be there? Be honest. I don’t know… I like it, haha,’ Fay said.

She rated the product, saying, ‘If I had to give it a score out of 10, I’d say 7, because I’m not sure I’d wear these every day. But what do you guys think? Would you try this?’

Comments on her video were mixed, from praise to scepticism:

  • ‘This is amazing for cancer patients and girls with alopecia 🙌🏻.’
  • ‘Giiirrrrrllll, this is genius 🤭🤭🤭.
  • ‘Omg, they look so good, I like this idea.’

Others were amused by the name, ‘Eyeshadow wig is sending me 😂😂😂😂.’ Some were sceptical, ‘Imagine seeing that on the floor and thinking someone’s eyelid blew off 😭,’ with one user adding, ‘That CANNOT be comfortable.’

Meet the Innovator: Mara Porter

This ‘eye wig’ is officially called ‘iLIDS™’, the world’s first eye wig, created by four-time Emmy-winning journalist, Webby Awards winner, host, and beauty innovator Mara Porter.

Porter is known for her DIY beauty and makeup hacks, and the idea for the ‘eye wig’ stemmed from a video of her putting a band-aid on her eyelids. The clip sparked numerous comments urging her to patent the idea and launch a business — which she did, with remarkable success.

In an exclusive interview with MadameNoire, Porter revealed she had been conceptualising the idea for years: ‘I’ve had this idea in my head for 20 years, because I had to get ready for TV every day for 15 years — that’s a full beat every single day,’ she explained.

She recalled applying false lashes in a car during a hurricane before going live on air:
‘I was like, “Let me put these on,” because being in a hurricane without lashes on doesn’t work when you’re on TV.’

How the ‘Eye Wig’ Works

According to Mara Porter’s website, iLIDS™ are crafted from a medical-grade, skin-safe, latex-free material, making them hypoallergenic and suitable for all skin types. Initially, the adhesive may feel non-tacky, but becomes sticky as it warms with body heat.

iLIDS™ are reusable and washable, so you can gently peel them off, clean them, and store them on their original backing for future use.

Using iLIDS™ is simple: just align the ‘eye wig’ over your eyelid, press it gently into place, and it instantly creates the appearance of fuller, more defined lashes or lids — without the need for mascara, lash extensions, or other traditional makeup products.

Because they’re cosmetic-safe, they can even be used by people with lash extensions or complete lash loss, offering a quick, fuss-free way to enhance your eye look.

In the interview, Porter said that her innovation was ‘God-given’.

‘This is 100 per cent God-given, like, in me,’ she told MadameNoire about her passion for beauty. ‘God planted this seed in me because I’ve been like this as long as I can remember. Every obsession I had, the thing that drew me like a moth to a flame, was always beauty-related. I remember being so obsessed with the Jet Beauty of the Week.’

Whether you’re a makeup pro or a beginner, the ‘eye wig’ is proving that beauty doesn’t have to be complicated. With iLIDS™, you can achieve flawless, show-stopping eyes in seconds. Thousands are already experimenting with this viral TikTok sensation. Now, the question is: will you?

What Is Parineeti’s Postpartum “Jugaad Makeup” Hack?

After giving birth on October 19, 2025, Parineeti Chopra had taken a small break. In this latest YouTube video, she opens up about exactly how motherhood has altered her beauty routine. Makeup style is all about working smart, not hard. She mixes ease with effectiveness. She shared that she likes using the same colour on her lips, cheeks, and eyelids to create a natural, monochromatic look that looks bright and fresh.

In her video, she explained her steps:

  • Starts with moisturiser to prep her skin, but skips primer and concealer.
  • Uses a small amount of foundation, applying it with a firm brush for control.
  • Applies lipstick first because, as she says, “Until I put on the lipstick, I feel like I look like a sick person.”
  • Uses the lipstick colour as blush applied in a C-shape for a lifted look.
  • Smudges a bit of the same lip colour as eyeshadow on her lids, using a hard brush for precision.
  • Applies a brown pencil liner on only the corners of her eyes and gently smudges it to create a subtle gradient.
  • Uses a specific mascara technique learned from makeup pros: placing the brush at the lash base and wiggling it from side to side.
  • Finishes by partially filling her eyebrows for a soft look.

This simple, minimalist makeup routine delivers a fresh-faced glow without fuss—a perfect fix for busy moms or anyone short on time.
