17 Natural Fall Soap Recipes

17 Fall Soap Recipes for Any Time of the Year

I’ve made a lot of homemade soap recipes over the years, and every time I go back through them, I’m reminded of how many fun seasonal soaps I’ve made! So, I decided to gather my 17 favorite fall soap recipes all in one place.

Even I had forgotten about some of these. Looking through the recipes was such a fun reminder and gave me plenty of inspiration to make a few that I haven’t made in a while.

These natural fall soap recipes are perfect for Autumn, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the entire winter season. They also make beautiful handmade gifts for friends, family, teachers, neighbors, and anyone who enjoys natural homemade products.

And, of course, you don’t have to wait for fall to make them. If you love warm, spicy, woodsy, citrusy, and cozy scents, you can enjoy these homemade soap recipes any time of year. I do! And they’re scents that my family often ask for year around as well.

Natural Ingredients for Fall Soap

If I’m going to take the time to make my own soap, I want to be careful with what is going into it. After all, why go to all that trouble just to add something toxic and ruin it all?

You can certainly make soap simply because it’s a fun craft—and it is! But one of my favorite things about making homemade soap is being able to choose simple, natural ingredients and leave out the artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, and unnecessary additives found in many commercial soaps.

You’ll find ingredients such as:

  • Shea butter
  • Cocoa butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Mango butter
  • Tallow
  • Lard
  • Beeswax
  • Essential oils
  • Natural clays
  • Root powders
  • Herbs and other botanicals

I use essential oils for scent and natural ingredients such as clays, herbs, and root powders for color whenever possible. You can learn more about naturally coloring homemade soap in my natural soap coloring chart.

Vegan, Tallow, or Lard Soap

Some of the recipes below are vegan, while others use tallow, lard, or beeswax. All of them make wonderful soap bars.

If you prefer a vegan soap recipe but love the colors, scent, or design of a recipe that contains tallow, don’t be afraid to use the design and essential oil blend from one recipe with the base oils from another.

For example, maybe you love the tree design and cedarwood scent of the Evergreen Tree Soap but would rather make a vegan bar. You can use your favorite vegan soap recipe and recreate is with the design and scent suggestions below.

Just be sure that you are working from a properly calculated soap recipe. Do not substitute oils or fats by weight without recalculating the lye amount, because different oils require different amounts of lye to saponify.

If beeswax is the only ingredient you want to avoid, you can also look for a suitable vegan wax alternative—but remember that waxes can change the properties of your finished soap, so substitutions should be made carefully. You can learn more about how to make substitutions here.

No Artificial Fragrances or Dyes

I don’t use artificial fragrance oils or synthetic dyes in my homemade soap recipes.

There are also other ingredients commonly added to soap that I personally choose to leave out, including titanium dioxide and artificially dyed micas.

Why add unnecessary questionable or outright toxic ingredients, when you can make something beautiful with natural ingredients? Instead, you’ll see natural colorants in my recipes, such as clays, herbs, and root powders, along with essential oils for those wonderful Autumn scents.

That’s one of the reasons I love making soap so much. You can create beautiful bars that look and smell amazing while knowing exactly what you used to make them.

How to Make Homemade Soap

If you’re brand new to soap making, don’t worry. I have a beginner-friendly guide that walks you through the process.

Start here: 7 Easy Steps to Homemade Lye Soap for Beginners.

I’ve also written several books about natural soap making, along with ebooks and other resources available through my shop.

Browse my natural soap-making books and resources

Cold Process vs. Hot Process Soap

Most of these recipes can be made using either the cold process or hot process method.

When made using the cold process method, the soap generally needs several weeks to cure before it is ready to use. I recommend following the individual recipe for its specific curing time, but many of these recipes are ready for use at around 3–4 weeks, while a longer cure can make an even harder, longer-lasting bar.

If you don’t want to wait as long, you can make all of these recipes using the hot process method. Hot process soap is cooked, which speeds up saponification, and the soap can be used once as soon as it has cooled and hardened. The main difference is in texture. Hot process tends to be chunkier looking, whereas cold process has that smooth soap bar look. Both have beautiful merits.

Keep in mind that “ready to use” and “fully cured” aren’t necessarily the same thing. Even hot process soap will continue to lose water and become harder over time.

Now for the fun part!

These 17 fall soap recipes are filled with cozy Autumn scents, natural ingredients, pretty designs, and plenty of inspiration for homemade holiday gifts. These are great as stocking stuffers, or in gift baskets.

Most recipes make either 2 or 3 pounds of soap, but be sure to check the individual recipe before getting started.

1. Cinnamon Roll Soap

Get the Cinnamon Roll Soap Recipe

This one looks almost good enough to eat!

The cinnamon swirl running through the middle of these soap bars makes them look like little cinnamon rolls. They’re especially fun to make for holiday gifts, and the warm cinnamon scent is perfect for Autumn.

Just remember to remind everyone that they’re soap—not breakfast!

2. Fall Sunset Soap

Get the Fall Sunset Soap Recipe

This has become one of my favorite fall soap recipes.

The colors remind me of an Autumn sunset, with beautiful shades of orange, purple, yellow, and pink swirled together. The essential oil blend adds those warm, comforting scents that make you think of crisp evenings and changing leaves.

I’ve even sold these in my shop during the holiday season.

3. Pumpkin Spice Soap

Get the Pumpkin Spice Soap Recipe

Of course pumpkin spice had to make the list!

Pumpkin spice is one of those scents that immediately makes a home feel like Fall. This recipe uses real pumpkin puree along with nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove for a warm, spicy seasonal soap.

It’s a favorite year after year and is a staple holiday soap in my shop.

4. Evergreen Tree Soap

Get the Evergreen Tree Soap Recipe

If you love woodsy scents, this is the soap for you.

Cedarwood gives this soap a wonderful earthy scent, and the tree design running through the center of each bar makes it especially fun for the winter and Christmas season (I add a green swirl, but you can also use an insert).

There’s something about cedarwood in the shower that feels like a little pick-me-up in the morning. It’s energizing and uplifting. A must have for anyone who suffers from those winter blues.

This is another one I like to keep in my shop year around.

5. Chai Soap

Get the Chai Soap Recipe

I love the smell of chai tea, especially when the weather starts to cool down. This soap combines the warm scents of cardamom, clove, and cinnamon and is simple to make because it uses a real chai tea bag in the recipe.

It’s a cozy soap bar that feels right at home during the Fall and winter months.

6. Orange and Clove Soap

Get the Orange and Clove Soap Recipe

Orange and clove are two of my favorite essential oils for creating that classic Fall feeling.

If I’m diffusing essential oils around the house in the Autumn, orange and clove are often my first choice. Together, they make a bright but warm scent that’s perfect for homemade soap.

This is a great one to make for holiday gifts, too.

7. Spiced Cider Soap

Get the Spiced Cider Soap Recipe

Apple cider is one of those things my kids love about Fall. They spot it in the store before anyone else!

This soap captures those sweet, warm cider scents in a homemade bar. It’s a wonderful choice if you want something that immediately brings back memories of cool weather, warm drinks, and Autumn afternoons.

8. Walk in the Woods Soap

Get the Walk in the Woods Soap Recipe

There is nothing quite like taking a walk through the woods when the air turns cool and crisp. This soap was really inspired by that feeling.

It’s earthy, woodsy, and calming—a wonderful choice if you prefer natural soap scents that aren’t overly sweet or spicy.

9. Autumn Leaves Soap

Get the Autumn Leaves Soap Recipe

This soap has a unique combination of orange, patchouli, and ginger essential oils. The result is a warm, woodsy scent that feels just like Autumn leaves and cool evenings.

If you like earthy essential oil blends, this is definitely one to try.

10. Gingerbread Soap

Get the Gingerbread Soap Recipe

These gingerbread soap bars are especially fun when made in molds. You can make little gingerbread people, gingerbread shapes, or whatever seasonal molds you have on hand.

They make adorable Christmas and holiday gifts, and they’re a fun project to make with the family.

11. Pumpkin Cinnamon Layered Soap

Get the Pumpkin Cinnamon Layered Soap Recipe

Pumpkin and cinnamon are two of the scents I immediately associate with Fall.

This soap combines the two in beautiful layers for a simple but eye-catching bar. It’s been a very popular Fall soap over the years.

12. Cranberry Vanilla Swirl Soap

Get the Cranberry Vanilla Swirl Soap Recipe

Pretty pink cranberry swirls are combined with a creamy vanilla-colored soap base.

The finished bars are beautiful enough to give as gifts, and the cranberry and vanilla combination makes them especially appropriate for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

13. Sugar Cookie Soap

Get the Sugar Cookie Soap Recipe

These sugar cookie soap bars are speckled with cinnamon and scented with vanilla. They’re another one that can fool your guests for just a second. They smell so good that you’ll probably need to remind everyone that they’re soap!

I love making soaps like this for the holidays because they look like little treats without actually being edible.

14. Hot Chocolate Soap

Get the Hot Chocolate Soap Recipe

Who doesn’t love hot chocolate?

Hot cocoa is appropriate for all kinds of cozy weather, but there’s something especially wonderful about it on a cold Fall or winter day. This recipe uses cocoa powder and cocoa butter, which add their own naturally chocolatey qualities to the finished soap.

It’s a fun winter soap and makes a great homemade gift.

15. Cranberry Orange Soap

Get the Cranberry Orange Soap Recipe

Cranberry and orange are such a pretty combination for the holiday season.

One fun thing about this recipe is that using cranberry juice doesn’t make the soap turn pink. You’ll have to use clays for that. But the cranberry juice is still a beautiful addition because it helps create a creamy texture and contributes to a bubbly finished bar.

The bright citrus combined with cranberry makes this one feel especially festive.

16. Vanilla Maple Soap

Get the Vanilla Maple Soap Recipe

Vanilla is always a favorite and adding maple gives it that rich bubbly lather. This soap also has a naturally darker cream color, making it look just as cozy as it smells.

If you like sweet soap scents but don’t want something overwhelmingly fruity, this is a great choice.

17. Apple Cider Soap

Get the Apple Cider Soap Recipe

This is a little different from the Spiced Cider Soap above. Instead of simply creating a spiced cider scent, this recipe actually uses apple cider in the soap. The sugar also helps contribute to extra bubbles, making this a wonderful Fall bar for everyday use.

Which Fall Soap Recipe Will You Make?

I hope you find a few recipes here that inspire you to get out your soap-making supplies and start creating!

These homemade fall soaps are wonderful for keeping around your own home, but they’re also perfect for DIY Christmas gifts, Thanksgiving hostess gifts, teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, and handmade gift baskets.

One of my favorite things about making soap is that you can take a basic skill and make it completely your own. Change the essential oil blend, try a different natural color, experiment with a new mold, or combine a design you love with your favorite soap base.

And if you make one of these, I’d love to know which one is your favorite!

Happy soap making and enjoy all those wonderful Fall scents.

The 62 Best Skincare Products of the Year

The 62 Best Skincare Products of the Year

Our faces aren’t inanimate objects, frozen and framed in a still life. Our skin stretches with every laugh, pulls with every frown, and is a living, breathing canvas, one kept healthy by nourishing skincare. But as more people go under the knife in the name of conservation (or restoration), the visible results from at-home serums and creams can seem fruitless in comparison. “Just as celebrities are becoming more transparent about what procedures they’ve had, skincare products need to become more transparent about the dosage of the ingredients and the efficacy of their products,” says Melissa Doft, a plastic surgeon in New York City and the founder of Doft New York skincare. “Patients are looking for ingredients that increase volume and radiance and help with the fine lines that are not addressed by a facelift. They’re looking for straightforward routines and quicker results.”

Our 2026 award winners blend the latest innovations in skincare science with proven, potent ingredients to drive real results, supporting your skin across all ages, stages, and interventions.

Celebrity Skincare Expert’s ‘Genius’ Lip Balm Hack Could Save You Hundreds Per Year

James Vivian, a Melbourne-based dermal therapist known for sharing skincare tips on Instagram, in a March 15 video claimed that lip balms have the potential to serve more than their marketed purpose.

The expert said that lip balms can replace anti-aging products that target a specific, delicate area of the face by providing the same hydrating benefits at a more economical price.

Many on the internet corroborated the claim, with one saying they had been using lip balms in the way the skin expert shared for decades and that it made them look like they were in their “40s instead of 70s.”

Another user who tried the trick after Vivian’s video also said it “worked wonderfully.”

James Vivian advocated the use of lip balms as under-eye creams

“As a 42-year-old man who hasn’t spent much time in the sun, really, the area of aging that I’m seeing most on my face is around my eyes,” Vivian said in his video.

The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest on the body, making it particularly prone to dryness, creasing, and premature aging.

Keeping this area hydrated could help minimize the damage, Vivian said, before sharing that he uses no fancy product to achieve the results.

He instead said he swears by using his lip balm to soothe and rejuvenate his under-eyes.

Lip balms are packed with occlusives and emollients — ingredients designed to lock in moisture — which is why Vivian believes they can double as a quick, budget-friendly eye treatment.

Vivian, however, warned against using balms “that fire up the lips” around the eyes.

“The really spicy ones with stimulating ingredients for circulation and plumping, the kind of bee-sting products, I’d keep that away from eye areas,” he said.

He also noted that it’s not a good idea to apply lip balms under makeup, as the thick texture of the product can disrupt concealer and cause creasing.

Jennifer Lopez’s makeup artist, Scott Barnes, encouraged using lip balms under makeup

In a May 2024 video, Barnes claimed one of his most reliable makeup hacks is to use Aquaphor (a balm stick by a company called Eucerin) on his clients’ eyes before proceeding with concealer.

The technique prevents concealers from creasing, caking, or breaking down, especially when someone is filming a music video or a movie that goes on for long hours.

Barnes asked his followers to try the hack and let him know if it worked for them.

The hack was soon tested by Glam Girl Gabi, a renowned beauty influencer and a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist.

“I’m going to try the trick all the freaking way. I’m doing the classic bronzy J.LO smoky eye,” Gabi claimed.

Pointing to the fine lines under her eyes, Gabi said, “I really do have an issue with my concealer creasing.”

After applying the lip balm under her eyes, she proceeded to do a full face of makeup, including concealer, foundation, setting powder, and more.

Gabi looked impressed with how her concealer set under her eyes, thanks to the lip balm towards the end.

“I have tried every d**n hack. I’ve tried every single thing. My under-eyes have never looked better,” she said.

Hours after first doing her makeup, Gabi gave her viewers a video check of whether her eye makeup remained in place.

“They look so much better than they normally look after a few hours. Life-changing, I tell ya,” she shared.

In a separate video, James Vivian warned against spraying perfume directly on the skin

Highlighting people’s habit of spraying fragrances right on their neck, Vivian said it could have long-term consequences.

He explained that applying perfume to the skin can trigger a condition known as Poikiloderma of Civatte.

It is a sun-induced skin condition in which the affected area develops reddish-brown pigmentation, mottled discoloration, and thinning of the skin.

While it is not harmful, it is notoriously difficult to treat once it develops.

Laser treatments, along with diligent sun protection, can help improve appearance, but Vivian stressed prevention is far better than cure.

Image credits: Cultura Creative/Adobe Stock (Not the actual photo)

Many perfumes contain photosensitizing ingredients (citrus oils, oakmoss, and certain synthetics like musk ambrette), which can make the skin more sensitive to UV rays.

When applied to sun-exposed areas like the neck, these ingredients can magnify the effects of sun exposure, accelerating pigmentation changes and even breaking capillaries over time.

Vivian advised using scents on clothes, hair, or covered skin, like under the collarbone, to protect oneself against stubborn pigmentation issues later in life.

“I swear to God, I came up with this on my own one day,” a netizen said

Here are the beauty resolutions everyone should make this year

Here are the beauty resolutions everyone should make this year

Alcohol has a major negative impact on the skin. It has been shown to contribute to fine lines, dullness, enlarged pores, inflammation, sagging, dark spots, puffiness and redness.

It depletes essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, zinc, magnesium and selenium, and it’s a diuretic, which contributes to that dehydrated, creased look the morning after drinking. It also increases histamine, triggering flushing and sensitivity, particularly with red wine, while the yeast in beer can worsen seborrheic eczema.
Cocktails, due to their high sugar content, can speed up collagen breakdown and increase inflammation. Clear spirits like vodka, gin and tequila are generally gentler on the skin, but if you are considering Dry January for health reasons, know it may have some wonderful side effects for your skin too!

Double cleanse, always

Cleansing is the foundation of any effective skincare routine. Without proper cleansing, serums and moisturisers cannot penetrate fully, leading to blocked pores, rough texture and dullness. Double cleansing ensures makeup, SPF, sweat, oil and pollution are thoroughly removed.

The first cleanse breaks down surface buildup, while the second actually cleans the skin. Even if you don’t wear makeup, SPF and daily pollution still require a double cleanse at night. You can use the same cleanser twice, though balms and oils are best followed by a cream, milk or gel to avoid residue that may cause breakouts. In the morning, a single cleanse is enough (those with very sensitive skin can just use water).

Don’t neglect your neck

This is often one of the first areas to show ageing because the skin is thinner, more delicate and has fewer oil glands. This makes it prone to dryness, crepiness and sagging.Constant phone use has also led to “tech neck,” where looking down repeatedly forms horizontal lines.

Sally Foran for the Irish Examiner. Picture: Nina Val

Extending your skincare routine to your neck is crucial. Moisturiser and SPF are safe to use daily. Patch test before adding stronger actives like retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids. Dedicated neck creams can be beneficial if you need additional support.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise offers amazing benefits for the skin because physical activity slows cellular ageing.
Research shows that people who exercise consistently have longer telomeres, which are linked to longevity.

Exercise boosts circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the skin, enhancing radiance.

One study from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, even found that frequent exercisers over 40 had skin that was microscopically comparable to that of people in their 20s and 30s!

The human growth hormone, which supports youthful skin, declines between ages 30 and 50, but even short bursts of exercise help stimulate it. Brisk walking is especially beneficial, offering many of the benefits of running without negatives such as the joint strain or facial fat loss.

If you smoke, quit

Quitting smoking is one of the best steps you can take to improve your skin. After UV exposure, smoking is the biggest environmental cause of premature ageing. Cigarette smoke contains free radicals that speed up ageing and trigger enzymes that break down collagen, leading to sagging and lines. Nicotine narrows blood vessels, reducing oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin, resulting in a dull, grey complexion.

Smoking also depletes vitamin C, vital for radiance, collagen production and healing. It disrupts estradiol, a form of oestrogen essential for firm, hydrated skin, causing dryness and thinning. Repeated smoking motions like lip pursing and eye squinting create deep wrinkles. Smoking can also worsen conditions such as psoriasis.

Never skip SPF

SPF is the most important daily skincare product. UV rays are responsible for up to 90 percent of premature ageing.

Most UV rays penetrate clouds, so protection is needed all year round. UV rays can also pass through glass, so SPF is necessary even when driving or sitting by windows.

Without sunscreen, the benefits of the rest of your skincare routine are reduced. Daily SPF helps prevent redness, hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, dehydration, enlarged pores and barrier damage.

A broad spectrum formula is essential and should be reapplied every two hours when outdoors. With so many affordable options now available, there’s no reason not to wear it.

Never sleep in your makeup

Sleeping in makeup is so bad for skin. It can clog pores, leading to breakouts, it interferes with natural exfoliation, causing dullness and roughness, and it can contribute to dryness and chapped lips.

Leaving eye makeup on can make lashes brittle and increase the risk of styes. Eyeshadow residue may irritate the eyelids and cause dermatitis.

Makeup can also trap free radicals (environmental pollutants and oxidized makeup ingredients), which may contribute to oxidative stress — a factor linked with collagen breakdown and skin aging. Bottom line, don’t skip your evening cleanse.

Commit to a nightime skincare routine

Our skin becomes more receptive to topical ingredients and repair activity at night. Research on circadian rhythms shows transepidermal water loss increases during the night, so ingredients can penetrate more easily, and increased blood flow can support better delivery of nutrients and actives. With that in mind, prioritise making time for your skincare routine at night (and give it some time before you hit the hay – you want your products fully absorbed into your skin, not the pillow!) Adequate sleep is also essential, as a lack of it increases inflammation and raises cortisol, which breaks down collagen, and reduces melatonin, which protects against fine lines and age spots.

2026 is the year of curated, not chaotic, skincare

2026 is the year of curated, not chaotic, skincare

If 2025 was the year of 12-step routines, ‘morning sheds’ and LED masks – 2026 is shaping up to be simpler and more sophisticated, writes Lara Owen.

Now we’ve rattled through the fads – dermatologists, facialists and skin specialists are all pointing towards the same shift: a return to simplified long-term focused results.

So, the industry’s leading experts reveal the habits worth adopting during this year.

1. Use retinoids properly

You’ve likely heard of retinoids – the umbrella term for vitamin As which include the milder, over-the-counter retinol and retinals you may be familiar with.

Retinoids are integral in improving tone, laxity and skin texture. They boomed last year, but interestingly experts disagree on how to use them.

“A well-formulated, medical-grade retinoid makes a remarkable difference,” says Nottingham-based aesthetics doctor, Dr Jessica Halliley.

“Many people run into problems because they use poor-quality formulas, apply them sporadically or start with a strength that overwhelms the skin.”

Her advice is to start incorporating retinols in small doses, slowly and always in the evening to avoid sun sensitivity.

If you’re feeling brave however, advanced clinical facialist Kate Kerr’s approach is quite the opposite.

“My approach is to go in fast and hard – which surprises many,” she says. “If you use it too slowly, you won’t get the results and will actually take longer to acclimatise to it.”

“I also don’t believe in ‘buffering’ retinols between layers of moisturisers and serums,” which, she believes, reduces their effectiveness.

“Just use it directly onto the skin, starting with two to three times per week, then working up to every night.”

It’s important, however, to understand your individual skin type, and if you’re unsure, ask your dermatologist.

Suggestion: Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1 Serum, Look Fantastic.

2. If you’re investing in one thing, make it collagen – not an LED mask

While LED masks have been touted as the go-to beauty investment, experts believe investing in collagen production is more effective than viral at-home tech.

Collagen-stimulating procedures can include polynucleotides and Softwave – a non-invasive ultrasound treatment that stimulates collagen production in the mid-dermis which lifts and tightens skin.

“[Softwave] remains one of the most worthwhile investments,” says Dr Halliley, “those who commit to a programme often appear to age more slowly outwardly.”

When it comes to polynucleotides, this is a slightly more invasive treatment, with the solution being injected directly into targeted areas.

“They signal your skin to repair itself, boost collagen, calm inflammation and lock in hydration,” explains senior skin and laser specialist at Thérapie Clinic, Kerrie-Ann Grant. “It’s like giving your skin the ‘blueprints’ to heal.”

While these treatments are worth the investment, investing in high-quality liquid or powder collagen (as opposed to the less effective tablet or capsule form) to have at home will deliver visible improvement within months.

When it comes to which type to pick, marine collagen (from fish) is primarily type I collagen, meaning it is more beneficial for skin health, while bovine collagen (from cow) typically contains both type I and III, which best supports skin, bones and joints.

Look for details like “grass-fed, pasture-raised” (for bovine) or “wild-caught, sustainably sourced” (for marine) to make sure it’s of higher purity and quality.

Suggestion: Absolute Collagen Marine Liquid Collagen Supplement.

3. Declutter your beauty stash

After a year of maximalist, multistep skincare routines, the pendulum is swinging back. And despite what TikTok tells you, you should have far fewer beauty products on the go than you probably think.

Dr Halliley predicts, ‘a renewed shift towards skinimalism with fewer products that outperform complicated multi-step routines’.

This isn’t just about clutter-clearing – streamlined routines also help aesthetic treatments work better.

Streamlining products won’t just trend for skin health, but for budgets too.

“I think we’re going to see a huge reduction,” says Ms Grant, “consumers want sustainability, less waste and budget-friendly products. The current 10 or 12-step routines will reduce to just three or four steps.”

In other words, 2026 is the year of curated, not chaotic, skincare.

Suggestion: 47 Skin 3 Step Treatment Bundle

4. Prioritise annual treatments for cumulative results

It’s clear that the experts see structural longevity as something to prioritise over fast fixes.

While treatments like Botox offer quick results, the experts say less invasive treatments can help improve skin quality in the long term, instead of offering purely aesthetic results.

Ms Kerr’s long-term recommendation leans towards collagen-stimulating techniques. “Microneedling and Xeogenesis laser help rebuild structure,” explains Kerr, “acting as a form of collagen banking for the future.”

Dr Halliley again stresses treatments like Sofwave and Sculptra that ‘stimulates both collagen and hyaluronic acid production giving a natural and progressive tightening effect’.

5. Stop over-exfoliating

Glycolic acid became one of the leading ‘must-have’ items in 2025, with countless experts touting it as a ‘hero ingredient’.

And, of course, glycolic acid is a crucial ingredient for brightening as well as reducing fine lines and wrinkles – but it comes at a cost.

Overusing this chemical exfoliant can wreck your skin barrier and actually speed up signs of ageing.

“I would love to see people stop over-exfoliating,” says Dr Halliley. Gritty cleansers and stringent chemical exfoliants may feel as though they’re doing something – but they’re actually doing more harm than good.

“This constant friction leaves the skin inflamed, reactive and prone to breakouts,” explains Halliley, “and over time it can even speed up visible ageing.”

It’s not just over-exfoliating that can damage our barrier, but combining this with too much moisture can stress the skin.

“The skin has an extraordinary self-regulating moisture system, yet we disrupt it when we over-cleanse or strip the barrier with harsh actives (then) overload (with moisturisers).” This can lead to dryness, congestion and sensitivity.

lSuggestion: Caudalie Vinoclean Deep Cleansing Exfoliator

6. Rebuild your lifestyle foundation

Radiant skin, it turns out, isn’t skin deep.

Dr Halliley calls lifestyle the ‘fundamentals’, emphasising whole foods, hydration, reduced beverages and avoiding smoking or vaping.

“These lifestyle pillars often determine how well aesthetic treatments perform and how long results last.”

Ms Kerr focuses on sleep – an underrated skincare and all-round wellbeing essential. “Night-time is when the skin repairs cellular damage,” she says. “When sleep is compromised, I often see more congestion, dullness and heightened sensitivity.”

Ms Grant suggests mediative breathing exercises and reduced screen time to help improve sleep quality.

If you want better skin, resolution Number Six is to treat your nervous system with the same enthusiasm you treat your skincare shelf.

Suggestion: L’Occitane En Provence Relaxing Pillow Mist.

53+ Ways to Give Experience Gifts Instead of Stuff This Year

With 6 kids, multiple business ventures, and an indoor plant obsession, it’s easy for things to pile up around the house. Amidst the holiday season gift-giving these gifts can lead to more stress for both the giver and receiver. Over the years we’ve embraced more of a minimalist lifestyle, including giving experience gifts.

After some trial and error, it’s now the norm… and the results are amazing!

An experience gift can be easy to arrange and thoughtful, even if it’s last minute. They’re also rewarding to both the giver and receiver. And you don’t have to live near Chicago or NYC and see a Broadway play to have a unique experience. Going to the movies as a family, taking art classes, or learning to scuba dive are priceless memories or skills that last a lifetime.

I still give a few material presents out at Christmas (you can find many of those unique gifts in this ultimate gift guide). However, the focus has shifted from piles of gifts to experiences that often the whole family can enjoy.

Do We Have Too Much Stuff?

Joshua Becker is my favorite expert on the topic of clutter and minimalism. He shares some sobering trends on his Becoming Minimalist blog.

Consider this:

  • The average American home has over 300,000 items in it.
  • At least 4 in 10 of us have a storage unit to store our excess stuff.
  • There’s enough physical space for every man, woman, and child in America to stand in U.S. storage facilities—all at the same time!

Why Give Experiences and Not Stuff?

Those staggering statistics wouldn’t worry me if it seemed the excess stuff somehow improved our lives. But that isn’t the case. Statistically, we’re not happy. Over 54% of us report being overwhelmed with clutter, and 78% of us have no idea how to overcome it! There are tons of topics on organizing and decluttering out there to help us deal with all of our stuff and the stress it causes us.

Thomas Gilovich, a researcher at Cornell University, spent more than a decade on the subject. He explored why experiences contribute more to happiness than stuff. He found that experiences are a uniting factor. You’re more likely to bond with someone who enjoys the same hobby or has traveled to the same places as you.

Even the anticipation leading up to a family trip, event, or experience has the potential to give happiness. This makes it the gift that keeps on giving! Happiness in anticipation, during the experience, and in the memories. Beats the heck out of a pile of toys you trip over while tucking the kids in at night!

Experience Gifts: The Importance for Kids

Shared family time (even at family dinners) is drastically important for a child’s well-being. Much more important than the toys we give them or the dozens of extracurricular activities we often neglect family time for.

There are lots of reasons to have shared family time and experiences, including:

  • bonding within the family
  • fewer behavioral problems in children
  • a stronger sense of identity and sense of security
  • higher rates of academic success
  • lower rates of violence

These shared experiences can be as simple as time spent together during meals, while driving, or reading stories before bed. Prioritizing shared experiences as gifts helps reduce unwanted material items while fostering family bonding. These ideas are great for Christmas or as a birthday gift.

53+ Ways to Give Experiences This Year

The average parent spends over $460 per child on toys and gifts each year! And about half of Americans are willing to go into debt over Christmas gifts. That just adds to our clutter and stress.

Experience gifts are great because they reduce clutter, give kids something to look forward to, and promote bonding.

Experience Gift Ideas For Parents and Families

Bigger experiences, like memberships or vacations, are often family gifts. It’s a fun way to check a few things off of your bucket list. Or try a new activity as a family, ranging from kayaking or rafting to setting up a zipline at home in the backyard. Feeling adventurous? Schedule a hot air balloon ride!

Season Passes or Memberships

  • Museum Memberships – Look into which local museums offer annual memberships near you. Some even offer discounts for local residents or have programs for kids.
  • Science Center Memberships – Many cities have an interactive children’s museum or science center with an annual pass option. Sometimes these end up costing less than one visit.
  • Orchestra Season Tickets – We have a local orchestra that performs every few months. I found children’s season tickets to be extremely affordable (less than $8 a show). It’s now a fun family activity.
  • Community Theater Tickets – If you have a local theater, buy season tickets. If you can’t buy one for each member of your family, buy two. Parents can go to the more grown-up plays as date nights, and then Mom or Dad can alternate taking the kids for special nights.
  • Sporting Events – Any professional or college teams in your area? Purchase season tickets to your favorite sport. Or if that’s too expensive, buy tickets to one game. My family loves baseball, and it’s been a great outing that lasts all summer.
  • Nature Center Tickets – Check for local nature preserves or nature centers in your area and see if they offer an annual pass. I’ve found these for nature centers, a local cave, and state parks.
  • The Zoo – Many zoos offer season passes and some have exclusive benefits for members.
  • Local Attraction Season Passes – Any other local attraction with a season pass can be a great gift. Check for other types of museums, historical sites, or local attractions.

Family Activities

  • Camping Tent – Sometimes, a material gift leads to an experience. This tent was a family gift a couple of years ago, and we’ve used it quite a few times. I picked this one because it’s easy to set up!
  • New Family Hobbies – Get the necessary equipment or passes to take up a new family hobby. Try hiking, camping, card games, a sport, or another fun activity.
  • Escape Room – This is an ideal group activity that Mom, Dad, and older kids can do with extended family for some fun quality time. Check to make sure the theme is family-friendly.
  • Be Puzzled – Feeling brave? This 33,600-piece puzzle is the world’s largest. It might take you the whole year to put together and will foster a LOT of family time!
  • Fun Family Outing– You don’t have to go all the way to the Grand Canyon or New York City to have a fun family trip. Visit an amusement park, take a local food tour, or plan a family staycation. Remember, looking forward to an experience makes the experience more fun and fosters happiness on its own!
  • Volunteer – Truly a gift that keeps on giving. If your kids are old enough, volunteer at a local food pantry or charity. Give your kids (and yourself) the gift of helping others!
  • Give to Charity – Another favorite in our family. We designate $100 per child, and they decide where to give it. They love choosing gifts like farm animals, fruit trees, or educational supplies for those in need around the world through programs like Food for the Poor.

Best Experience Gifts for Kids

Kids love learning new things or spending time doing their favorite activities. It’s always special to spend one-on-one time with their parents. Experiences are a great way to give them both!

Learn or Perfect a Skill

  • Local Pottery Painting – An absolute favorite with my girls. Our local pottery place has dozens of options to paint. This has been a fun activity for the kids (and me!).
  • Pottery Making – For older kids, some places offer pottery-making lessons or classes.
  • New Skill – Does your child want to try horseback riding, cooking, sewing, painting, or another similar activity? Give them classes for a new hobby or skill. You can even buy virtual classes through sites like Udemy. Or, to keep costs down, look at your local recreation center, or ask a family member to teach your child. Here are my favorite cooking classes for kids.
  • Rock Climbing – Have a local rock-climbing gym? See if they offer annual passes or pick-up gift certificates for a climbing outing with older kids. Bonus: It’s a great way to get exercise too!
  • Learning Magazine Monthly Subscription – Our kids love getting “real mail” in the mailbox. This is one gift my extended family members often get for them. They look forward to it coming each month and doing the activities.
  • Craft Bucket – One of my favorite Christmas gifts as a child: a basket of craft activities that lasted me all year! My aunt filled a large basket with scissors, paper, glue, string, and every craft supply imaginable. It led to hours of fun for me. My kids love getting these baskets, plus books about how to draw, art kits, sticker pads, construction paper, and other craft kits.
  • Musical Instrument – A favorite gift one Christmas was a steel drum for my kids. Though I admit, on a couple of especially loud days, I have regretted the idea! This is the one I got, and they’ve loved learning to play it. I also ordered mini musical instrument kits.
  • Music Lessons – Along with their new instrument, you can gift them some music lessons. Piano or guitar lessons are popular, but there’s also violin, harp, and even ukulele!
  • Subscription Box – The gift that keeps on giving! Kids love getting these regularly in the mail and you can choose from a wide variety of activities. KiwiCo has art, STEM, or geography boxes, while CrateJoy offers everything from arts and crafts to gardening or alien paraphenalia!

Active Experiences

  • Local Jump Gym – Another fun activity that helps kids stay active. See if you have a local jump gym or indoor trampoline center and get annual passes or gift cards.
  • Batting Cage Membership – For a child who loves baseball, look for a local batting cage. Some offer year-long memberships or bulk discounts on packages. This is a great way to stay active and have a fun outing together.
  • Bowling or Skate Tickets – If you have a local bowling alley or skating rink, ask about family passes or gift certificates. Roller skating and ice skating are both fun.
  • Every Kid in a Park – If you have a fourth grader, there’s no excuse not to get this one. It’s a free year-long park pass to all the national parks. It provides access to everyone in your immediate family, not just the fourth grader. (Here’s how to get it.)
  • Treasure Hunt – If you’re giving a material gift, make it a fun experience. Instead of wrapping it up, create a scavenger hunt for the child to find the final gift. This is especially fun for a larger gift or experience.
  • Geocaching – Speaking of treasure hunts, geocaching is a fun, free way to go on a treasure hunt with your kids almost anywhere in the world. You can learn more about it here.

Family Time

  • Lunch Dates – Give vouchers to a favorite breakfast or lunch place to a child and plan a one-on-one date with them.
  • Movie Tickets – We don’t go to the movies often, but sometimes there are some great family movies coming out around Christmastime.
  • Question Book – My kids all love this Question A Day Book, and it gives us a fun conversation starter each day.
  • Garden Kit – Just like crafts, gardening is a great activity to do with children. If you have a budding gardener (pun intended), wrap up some seeds and gardening supplies and let your child help you garden all year!
  • Movie Night Packages – My children don’t watch much TV, but we love family movie nights. To make it even more fun, I wrap up a new DVD and some healthy snacks for each child to let them “host” the movie night.
  • Game Night Packages – Giving each child one game is a fun way to expand our collection. And they love playing “their game” when we have a game night. Some favorites are Apples to Apples, Tsuro, Sequence, and basic card games.
  • DIY Kits – My kids enjoy getting the supplies to make DIY items together (like this DIY Christmas garland) or give them as gifts. This paper-making kit was an especially big hit. Bonus: they’re learning new skills too!
  • Learn a Language – Learn Spanish, Italian, or even Japanese together. Programs like Talk Box offer an easy and natural way to learn together as a family through everyday conversation.

Experience Gifts for Men

Check out this post for ideas of usable, practical gifts that dads will enjoy (and that help them be healthier, sleep better, etc.). In my experience, guys are the toughest to find experience-based gifts for. But here are a few ideas that have been a hit over the years:

  • Home Brewing – For the guy who loves beer, give him an organic (or at least non-GMO) home brewing kit. There are pre-made brewing kits but go to a local homebrew store if possible to find out what supplies and ingredients he’ll need.
  • Sports – Tickets to see his favorite teams play can be a big hit. These tend to be more expensive, so you may have to save for a while, but they can make for an amazing and memorable experience!
  • Outdoor Activities – This will vary depending on the guy, but finding outdoor experiences he already loves is a great gift idea. This might be finding time to camp as a family or for him to go hunting, hiking, or playing sports like golf.
  • Scuba Certification – Why not give each other scuba certifications as a gift? Go through the process together and then enjoy a great hobby together.
  • Skydiving – Is your guy adventurous? Skydiving is a ton of fun, and many cities have a local place you can go. They can also do indoor skydiving if they’re not feeling quite as adventurous.

Experience Gifts for Women

Memes abound online about moms enjoying going to the bathroom alone. Here’s a fun list of material gifts for mom for the perfect gift. But moms also love experiences too!

  • Day(s) Off – One of my favorite gifts ever was a series of “days off” that I didn’t have to cook, clean, or have any household responsibilities (and it included a gift card to go out for coffee!). Instead, other family members can take over mom’s tasks.
  • Dance Lessons – If you have a local dance studio or ballroom dance club she might like taking lessons there. Ballroom dance is a fun way to connect as a couple. Adult ballet or tap is also making a comeback if she prefers to go solo.
  • Painting Session – These sessions are a great way to learn and have fun while being creative. Treat mom to a night of painting, even better if it’s with a few best friends.
  • Wine Tasting – It would be great to get her a trip to Napa or Italy, but not everyone can do that. Instead, arrange an in-home wine tasting. Dry Farm Wine has wine gift boxes that will ship straight to your door.
  • Spa Day – All moms can use some pampering! Plus, it’s something mom may only do if it’s a gift. Massages are my favorite!
  • Date Nights – A couples getaway or time alone can be tough with kids. Give mom a pre-planned date night and handle all the arrangements, line up a sitter, and make the plans.
  • Craft or Hobby Supplies – Some new yarn, drawing supplies, or even an adult coloring book are all great experience gifts for moms. You can get art supplies here.
  • Meal Kit Subscription – While I love my meal planner app, some days I don’t feel like cooking. For the healthy foodie, I like the meals from The Good Kitchen and Daily Harvest.
  • Nap or Getting to Sleep In – This may be one of the toughest gifts to pull off, but definitely one of the most appreciated. If you can figure out how to do it, she’ll be grateful!
  • Any Family Gifts – Any of the family gifts listed above are also a great option to get for moms. They’ll enjoy the family bonding and the idea of an activity to do with the kids.

Gifts for Grandparents + Extended Family

Often our loved ones don’t need any more material gifts or just really appreciate experiences. I’ve found these to be really popular options with my family members.

  • Day Out with Kids – The kids pick a fun activity to do with grandparents and give it as a gift. It could be something like going out for smoothies, playing at the park, or going to the store to gather ingredients to cook a meal together.
  • Window Garden – Sometimes it’s harder for grandparents to get down in the dirt like they used to. A windowsill garden with herbs is a great way to have flavorful spices all year long and have fun gardening. My kids and I love this countertop version from Aerotop.
  • Memory Book – I love making a photo book with a company like Mixbook that showcases favorite memories with the giftee. Or let your kids make a homemade scrapbook by printing and cutting out pictures and writing captions.
  • Membership Add-Ons – For grandparents who live close by, add them to any of the family memberships listed above. This lets them come for free and spend time with the kids. And as a bonus, you have extra eyes to help with the kids.

Experience Gifts: The Bottom Line

Even if you’ve already purchased gifts this year, consider adding some experiences as well. Or slowly transition to more experience-based gifts. Family time and memories are worth so much more than piles of toys.

Have you given experiences instead of gifts in the past? What other suggestions would you add to this list?

6 Dark Lipstick Shades That Complement Indian Skin Tones

11 Skincare Lessons For Indian Women To Take From 2025 Into The New Year

As Indian women, we navigate busy lifestyles with ease, but our skin takes a beating given the stress, pollution, and diverse climates we live through. Nourish your skin and give yourself a healthy glow with these tips that will elevate your skincare routine.

Skinimalism Please
Ditching complicated routines for simple, multi-functional products that nourish without overwhelming your skin is the way to go. This helps reduce risk of skin irritation and breakouts. On the plus side, it saves time and is perfect for busy lifestyles. Simply start with a gentle cleanser, hydrating serum, and SPF; add products as needed.

Climate-Specific Care
Adapt your skincare products to India’s diverse climates – think lightweight gels for humidity, rich creams for dry zones. This ensures hydration matches environmental stressors.

Elevated Body Care
Extend your skincare routine to your entire body, not limiting it just to the face. This promotes overall glow and addresses neglected areas. Use a body scrub weekly and a hydrating lotion daily. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on exposed skin!

Be Smart With SPF
Use sunscreens that offer protection against UV rays, blue light, and pollution, with added hydration benefits. This shields skin from premature ageing and damage in India’s tropical climate. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ with a lightweight texture; apply about 20 minutes before stepping out and reapply every 2-3 hours.

Barrier Repair
A strengthened skin barrier prevents moisture loss and sensitivity in harsh conditions, and protects against pollution and stress. Add a ceramide-rich night cream or squalane oil to your skincare routine.

Regenerate & Restore
Regenerative skincare products target deep ageing signs with cutting-edge science. Consult a dermatologist for professional treatments or serums. You can explore exosomes for collagen boost, inflammation reduction, and repair.

Biohack Beauty
Boost your skin health with science-backed ingredients like peptides, stem cells, and NAD+ boosters. These ingredients help target skin ageing, build resilience, and repair at a cellular level.

Microbiome-Friendly Products
Support your skin health with probiotics and prebiotics. These fermented ingredients balance your skin’s ecosystem, reducing inflammation and acne. Pick cleansers or creams with lactobacillus or bifida ferment.

Wellness-Driven Skincare
Holistic health reflects externally, so eat antioxidant-rich foods, hydrate well, practise yoga/meditation. Use neurocosmetics to your advantage – focus on stress-reducing ingredients that link emotional wellbeing to skin health. This can help manage stress-induced issues like acne or dullness.

Personalisation With AI
Leverage AI-driven skin analysis for customised skincare routines addressing your unique skin concerns. Tailored solutions for your skin type and issues boost effectiveness. Try apps like SkinMatch or consult a dermatologist who uses AI tools for a personalised plan.

Sustainable Beauty
Opt for eco-friendly packaging, and natural ingredients that are cruelty-free. Not only does this support the planet, but it often means gentler, skin-friendly formulas. Look for brands with green certifications, refill options, and minimal packaging.
