What Matters More Than Brand Name

While these brands offer strong value, no single skincare line works perfectly for everyone. Skin type, sensitivity, age, climate, and specific concerns all influence which products will perform best.

When building a routine, focus on the basics first:

  • A moisturizer suited to your skin type

  • One or two targeted treatment products if needed

A consistent routine built around proven ingredients often delivers better results than an expensive cabinet full of products. The good news is that many of today’s most trusted skincare options can be found at surprisingly affordable prices.

Meet The Skincare Products That Make Your Botox and Laser Results Even Better

Meet The Skincare Products That Make Your Botox and Laser Results Even Better

How can you tell someone’s age? Is it A, their ability to find their way around anything more tech-y than sending an email and using a printer (guilty); B, whether or not they can recite all the lyrics to a Central Cee/Taylor Swift/Kool & the Gang song; or C, how wrinkly their faces are?

Not that it matters one bit, but the answer is definitely not “C.” As a 56-year-old woman, I find it impossible to tell anyone’s age between about 25 and 40, so furrow-free are their foreheads, and as for the over 40s, from Sienna Miller to Demi Moore to Naomi Campbell, I am fascinated at just how healthy, beautiful and vibrant women of all ages are looking these days, before thinking, “I want what she’s having.”

Women are having it all, and not necessarily in the way that Helen Gurley Brown’s book of the same name intended us to. Published a mere seven years before the arrival of the now-famous injectable Botox, what we’re actually having is, globally, about $3.5 billion worth of Botox this year alone. It’s not just Botox either: more than 14.9 million surgical and 18.8 million non-surgical procedures—everything from “tweakments” through to full-on facelifts—were performed worldwide in 2022. One happy side effect of all this? Beauty brands are now teaming up with dermatologists, aesthetic doctors, and plastic surgeons in a mutual love fest of the beauty equivalent of “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em”, the results of which might just be giving us our best skin ever.

Dr Patricia Ogilvie, whose clinic Skinconcept Munich includes two private clinics in dermatology and laser medicine, thinks so. Working with around 14 different laser systems, from ablative (which evens out the skin by removing its top layers) to non-ablative (which creates heat and tightens the collagen without irritating the epidermis), her laser speciality was of interest to Dior, which, finding that 50% of premium customers, including its own, undergo aesthetic procedures such as laser, wanted to find ways to further support their skin. For Dr. Ogilvie, a dermatologist and member of Dior’s Reverse Aging Board, introducing Dior’s La Micro-Huile de Rose Activated Serum to these otherwise potentially aggressive treatments is irresistible. “To a certain degree, all these procedures rely on creating damage to the skin,” Dr. Ogilvie explains. “It’s an induced healing process, and we want to orchestrate that as much as possible while also getting the benefits of collagen production. It’s a balance.”

Dr. Ogilvie is excited at how this might benefit her own patients: “My clients find it very difficult in social situations to [publicly] show any signs of redness post-treatment,” she says, “and so even just reducing the downtime by a few degrees is great for them.”

Dior isn’t the only skin-care brand to be on the laser trail. Shiseido’s new Bio-Performance Skin HIForce Cream was not only inspired by the way laser treatments propel our skin into crisis mode, prompting it to focus on maximum recovery and regeneration, but it was also tested by a dermatologist specializing in non-ablative fractional laser, where it was found that it helps skin heal faster afterward.

Meanwhile, Orveda’s new Youth Glove Protocol Hand Care Trio was inspired by aesthetic hand rejuvenation procedures, such as fillers. Our hands very often bear the brunt of aging and receive a cursory slathering of hand cream if they’re lucky, but Orveda’s new daily cream and weekly pro-grade procedure is applied at home under medical-grade silicone gloves so that the complex can “fill” the volume in the dorsal hand area. It promises to increase plumpness by 23%.

Best time to apply skincare products for maximum results

Best time to apply skincare products for maximum results

Optimal times to use skincare products for optimal results: How to align routine with skin’s natural rhythms for healthy, glowing skin?

Have you ever wondered why skincare products come with instructions on how and when to use them? It might seem like a marketing trick, especially if you spent a lot on that fancy night cream. But it’s important to follow these guidelines. Our skin has its own internal clock that shows the best times to use products for maximum benefits. How do you adjust your skincare routine to align with this timing for beautiful, glowing skin?

What should your morning skincare routine be?

Morning is important for your skin because it protects it from factors such as pollution, ultraviolet rays, and oxidative stress. These factors can harm your skin. That’s why your morning routine should focus on strengthening your skin’s barrier.

Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are beneficial during this time. Research from Harvard Health shows that vitamin C can neutralise free radicals caused by sun exposure, helping reduce potential damage. However, using sunscreen is important. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology shows that applying sunscreen daily can prevent skin ageing, pigmentation, and even skin cancer. “A lightweight moisturiser that helps the skin barrier can also be a great addition to your daytime routine. It is important to create a protective barrier that lasts throughout the day,” cosmetic dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor tells Health Shots.

The sun’s rays can still reach you on cloudy days. Due to this, you should always wear sunscreen, even when it’s overcast.

Why does my skin get oily in the afternoon?

As the afternoon sun shines brightly, your skin absorbs not only UV rays but also dirt and pollutants. By mid-afternoon, your skin feels greasier. This is due to the buildup of sebum, sweat, and environmental debris, which can worsen skin conditions such as acne or rosacea.

Reapplying sunscreen is very important. If you think putting it on once in the morning is enough, think again! Doctors recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially when you’re in direct sunlight. “In addition to sunscreen, calming ingredients like niacinamide can help reduce inflammation caused by environmental stress,” says the dermatologist. This can lower redness and control oil production, helping you maintain a balanced, fresh complexion throughout the day.

What happens to your skin during the night?

At night, your skin undergoes significant changes. This is when your skin repairs and regenerates itself the most. Research published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology indicates that your skin’s natural repair processes are most effective at night. DNA repair accelerates, new cells are produced more quickly, and barrier recovery occurs efficiently.

Evening is the best time to use treatment products. Retinoids and exfoliants such as AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) are effective in nighttime skincare routines. “These ingredients help boost collagen production, improve skin texture, and support skin renewal over time. However, be patient; when you first start using retinoids, they can irritate your skin and make it more sensitive to sunlight,” says Dr Kapoor. That’s why it is better to apply them at night when your skin is less exposed to environmental stress.

As the night goes on, your skin loses more moisture and becomes more prone to dryness. “Using a rich moisturiser or barrier cream during this time can help restore hydration and support recovery”, says the doctor.

Why timing matters in dermatology?

Timing is important for good clinical outcomes. Research in Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy shows that wound healing, barrier recovery, and inflammation follow natural biological rhythms. “For example, if you time your post-procedure care, such as after chemical peels, laser treatments, or microneedling, to these natural repair periods, it can improve healing and reduce irritation”, says the expert. You need to think about both which products you use and when you use them.

What helps to maintain healthy skin?

Your skin has an internal clock that is important for maintaining healthy skin. To support this, protecting your skin during the day and nourishing it at night helps your skincare work in sync with your body’s natural rhythms. “Creating a skincare routine that aligns with your skin’s natural rhythms can make your products work better and promote healthier skin over time”, shares Dr Kapoor. So, when you apply your night cream or wash your face after a long day, you are participating in a careful interplay with your skin’s internal clock.

Can Topical Skincare Match The Results Of Tweakments?

Can Topical Skincare Match The Results Of Tweakments?

Skincare has always been at the centre of beauty: from the classic blue tub of Nivea Crème to Tretinoin, topical formulations keep the industry alive. But lately, a new generation of products has entered the fold, claiming far more in terms of results, even those comparable to professional procedures. But how do they measure up? I investigated.

A new era of skincare

This ‘new era’ of skincare recognises the mainstreaming of aesthetic treatments like filler, Botox and polynucleotides, and thus, that we want better, smarter results for our skin. It also knows we are savvy, and that for the most part, we’re willing to invest to see a real difference. But what these formulations offer, or claim to offer, are results similar to those of the in-clinic tweakments at a much lower cost. Seemingly, making them the best of both worlds.

Let’s start, for example, with a couple of the industry’s latest launches by well-known and beloved skincare brands. The Ordinary’s Volufiline 92% + Pal-Isoleucine 1% is a product that uses innovative ingredients (Volufiline, otherwise known as Sarsasapogenin, and Palmitoyl Isoleucine) to supposedly address causes of lost volume at their core, rather than just masking the effects. It’s designed to be used on areas such as the temples, smile lines and cheeks, where we see evidence of lost collagen and elastin, most commonly the more we age. For this reason, the product has been dubbed a ‘filler alternative’ online, and while the brand never explicitly embraces this claim, it does do a good job of describing benefits that sound an awful lot like filler.

Another product that’s caught my eye lately is Skinceuticals’ Advanced RGN-6 Rejuvenation Cream. The brand has a history of creating clever formulations that could be said to offer ‘tweakment-like’ results, such as P-Tiox, which many compared to Botox. According to the brand, the new cream was “inspired by laser regeneration science” and uses peptides such as Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9. Results, the brand says, include reduced pigmentation by 36%, a 35% increase in elasticity and firmness, and an 18% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles. Its primary use is to aid skin post-procedure, but there are clear comparisons to laser treatments, too. “Advanced RGN-6 marks a new type of cream that has been designed to be used not only alongside laser treatment, but as a powerhouse standalone formula,” says Dr Wassim Taktouk, an Aesthetic Doctor who works with the brand.

Skinceuticals

These two are not alone. Emma Lewisham’s Supernatural Vitale Face Elixir has been dubbed part of the ‘Botox in a bottle’ trend online, and Roc’s Derm Correxion Lip Volumizer was developed by dermatologists and plastic surgeons to “work instantly and over time to deliver a dramatic plump”, which is said to be ‘inspired by lip injections.”

It’s clear skincare marketing has a clear new focus: tweakment-like results. Brands know we want these, and they know we’d rather get them for less. But is there real weight behind the claims?

Can topical skincare products really compare to tweakments?

Many of these products do hydrate, plump, and smooth the skin—the real question is to what extent and for how long. Procedures like fillers, Botox, lasers, and skin boosters deliver immediate results that can last months to years, often improving over time. In contrast, topical skincare typically works more slowly and produces subtler changes. And in some cases—like plumping balms—the effect is mostly instant gratification (your lips look fuller) but fades quickly.

Unfortunately, most skin experts agree that even this new wave of topical products delivers within the same limits: results are either subtle and slow to appear, or instantly noticeable but superficial and short-lived.

Speaking about The Ordinary’s Volufiline 92% + Pal-Isoleucine 1%, for example, Dr. Toni Phillips, an aesthetic doctor and Group Clinical Director for SK:N Clinics, notes that, “while products like this can enhance hydration and give the skin a softer, more cushioned look, they cannot recreate the lift, contour or volume restoration that true dermal fillers provide.” She adds: “Topical formulas sit within the upper layers of the skin, whereas fillers replace lost structure at a much deeper level.”

“The benefits are subtle, slow-building and low-risk—but they won’t replicate the lift, precision or immediate impact of hyaluronic acid fillers,” adds Aesthetic Doctor, Dr Jessica Halliley.

Dr Sonia Khorana, cosmetic doctor and dermatology expert, agrees that when it comes to products with ‘Botox-like’ effects, the outcome doesn’t compare. “You do not get the same results out of a bottle as you do with injections, as they do not inhibit muscle contraction, as a serum cannot penetrate the muscle. The results are also not long-lasting like they are with Botox,” she tells me. “It’s important to note that these serums are not a replacement for professional medical treatments like Botox.”

What the experts want consumers to remember, therefore, is that these products work on a different level to injectables and professional treatments, mostly at the surface. Many of the innovative, modern ingredients they use also don’t have nearly as much scientific evidence as aesthetic procedures do in terms of smoothing, plumping and filling in the long-term.

On a regulatory level, too, there is a clear difference between cosmetics and aesthetic treatments like injectables, Kamal Kaur of The Cosmetic Regulator told me last year. “Aesthetic injectable treatments are medicinal procedures and work on a physiological level; cosmetics should not be compared to these treatments.”

It’s therefore important to manage expectations: as it stands, a skincare formula you can buy for £20 probably isn’t going to stop you from wanting Botox or filler, if these are your desired treatment results. However, that’s not to say they’re not valuable, and can be a great addition to your skincare routine.

These products have been created with the aesthetic experience in mind, meaning that although they might not produce transformational results, they can work over time, especially when used in tandem with professional procedures. Most experts I spoke to agreed that a product like The Ordinary’s or Emma Lewisham’s can be a great additional, complementary step to achieving those longer-term, deeper, structural changes — perhaps more so than other products in your existing routine, because these formulas are targeted and have been created with this in mind.

“Think of it [The Ordinary’s Volufiline 92% + Pal-Isoleucine 1%] as a supportive step: great for soft, natural-looking plumpness, helping maintain results between appointments, or offering a gentle boost if you’re not ready for injectables,” says Dr Halliley. This also applies to products like RoC’s, Emma Lewisham’s and Skinceuticals; the latter of which I recently used post-microneedling and laser on my neck, and found to be a lovely formulation for recovery. For this reason, they’re worth investing in: just be sure to understand what they can — and cannot — realistically achieve.
