Discover How You Can Build A Clean Skincare Routine

Discover How You Can Build A Clean Skincare Routine

You wash your face religiously, yet your skin still looks dull, feels irritated, or breaks out without warning. The problem isn’t your dedication, but what you’re putting on your skin. A clean skincare routine swaps synthetic chemicals and questionable ingredients for natural, effective alternatives that actually work with your body.

Building a clean skincare routine means choosing products made from naturally derived ingredients, free of parabens and sulfates, and formulated without harsh chemicals that irritate sensitive skin. Your skin absorbs what you put on it, making ingredient quality just as important as the food you eat. The good news is it’s less complicated than most brands make it out to be.

What Does Clean Skincare Actually Mean?

Clean skincare focuses on products made with natural, sustainable ingredients that skip synthetic chemicals and questionable additives. Think plants and minerals instead of lab-created compounds with names you can’t pronounce. According to the FDA, some cosmetic ingredients can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

The difference between clean and conventional skincare comes down to what’s not in the bottle. Clean products skip the usual offenders like parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances that leave sensitive skin angry and irritated. Instead, clean formulations rely on plant extracts, essential oils, and natural preservatives that protect product integrity without harming your skin.

Why Your Skin Craves Clean Ingredients

Your skin is your body’s largest organ and can absorb a significant percentage of what you apply topically. Natural ingredients like chamomile, aloe vera, and green tea contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that actually nourish your skin at a cellular level. When you use products loaded with synthetic chemicals, you’re essentially feeding your skin junk food.

How Do You Start a Clean Skincare Routine?

Starting a clean skincare routine doesn’t mean tossing everything in your bathroom and spending hundreds on replacements overnight. Begin by switching out the products you use most frequently, such as your cleanser or moisturizer, since these sit on your skin longest. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends selecting gentle cleansers that don’t contain harsh ingredients.

Replace products as they run out rather than doing a complete overhaul immediately. Your skin needs time to adjust, so don’t rush it. Start with cleansing, then move to moisturizing, then add treatments once you’ve got your basics down solid.

Building Your Foundation Slowly

Read ingredient lists like you read food labels. Look for products with short ingredient lists that you recognize, like shea butter, jojoba oil, vitamin E, and botanical extracts. Companies that offer wholesale skin care products often specialize in clean formulations that prioritize ingredient transparency.

The Essential Steps for Daily Skin Cleansing

Your natural beauty regimen needs just three core steps that you’ll repeat twice daily: cleanse, treat, protect. Morning and evening routines differ slightly, but the fundamentals stay consistent for an effective, eco-friendly beauty routine. Keeping it simple helps you stay consistent, which matters more than using ten different products sporadically.

Morning cleansing with gentle skin products removes overnight oil production and preps skin for the day ahead. Use a non-foaming cleanser with ingredients like honey, oatmeal, or aloe vera. Massage in circles for about 30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water and gently pat dry.

Evening Cleansing Goes Deeper

Your evening routine works harder since you’re removing makeup, sunscreen, pollution, and the day’s grime. Try double cleansing: begin with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, then use your regular gentle cleanser. This two-step process ensures you’re actually getting clean without stripping your skin’s natural barrier.

What Should Be Included in a Clean Skincare Routine?

Every solid routine includes four non-negotiables: cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and SPF. These form the backbone of your daily skin cleansing regimen. Everything else, like serums, exfoliants, masks, or eye creams, works as optional add-ons that address specific concerns.

Toner balances your skin’s pH after cleansing and removes any residual dirt your cleanser missed. Skip anything with alcohol, which dries out skin. Instead, choose rose water, witch hazel, or cucumber extract.

Moisturizer hydrates and protects your skin barrier, whether your skin is oily, dry, or combination. Look, even oily skin needs moisture, as skipping it backfires; your skin just cranks up oil production to make up for it. These organic skincare tips emphasize looking for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, and jojoba oil in your gentle skin products.

Don’t Skip SPF Ever

Sunscreen is the single most important anti-aging product you’ll ever use, as UV damage causes premature wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. Choose a mineral sunscreen with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide rather than a chemical sunscreen. Apply SPF 30 minimum every single morning, even when it’s cloudy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does It Take to See Results From a Clean Skincare Routine?

You’ll notice improvements in skin within 4 weeks of switching to clean products. Deeper stuff like reduced breakouts or fading dark spots take 6 to 12 weeks, since that’s how long your skin needs to complete its natural renewal cycle. Stick with your routine consistently rather than switching products every few weeks.

Are Clean Skincare Products More Expensive?

Clean products can cost more than drugstore options, but often match or beat department store prices. You’re paying for quality ingredients and ethical sourcing rather than marketing budgets. Many clean brands offer concentrated formulas where you use less product per application, making them last longer despite higher upfront costs.

Can I Mix Clean and Conventional Skincare Products?

Absolutely! Your routine doesn’t need to be 100% clean overnight. Mixing clean and conventional products won’t harm your skin; it’s simply a transition strategy that works within your budget.

Your Path to Healthier, Happier Skin

Building a clean skincare routine doesn’t require expensive overhauls or complicated regimens with fifteen steps. You need consistency with quality products that respect your skin’s natural functions rather than fighting against them. Focus on the essentials, like gentle cleansing, balanced hydration, and daily protection, using ingredients you recognize and trust.

Your skin responds to what you feed it, whether through food or topical products. Choosing clean, naturally-derived ingredients gives your skin the nutrients it needs to repair, protect, and glow. Give it time; the payoff is real.

What is sensory mindfulness?

What is sensory mindfulness?

What’s the story

Sensory mindfulness is a simple yet effective way to improve your well-being by focusing on the five senses.
The practice encourages you to be present and aware of your surroundings, which can help reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
By incorporating sensory mindfulness into your daily routine, you can develop a deeper connection with the world around you.
Here are five beginner-friendly habits that can help you get started with sensory mindfulness.

Focus on your breathing

Paying attention to your breath is the simplest way to practice sensory mindfulness.
Sit comfortably and take deep breaths in and out through your nose.
Concentrate on the sensation of air entering and leaving your body.
This practice calms the mind and brings your focus back to the present moment, making it easier to let go of distractions.

Engage with nature

Spending time outdoors lets you connect with nature through sight, sound, touch, smell, and sometimes taste.
Go for a walk in a park or garden where you can observe trees, flowers, birds, and other elements of nature.
Notice how they feel underfoot or how they smell in the air around you.
Engaging with nature helps ground you in reality while promoting relaxation.

Practice mindful eating

Mindful eating means paying full attention to what you eat by using all five senses—sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound—while eating slowly without distractions like television or smartphones.
Notice colors on your plate; savor flavors as they unfold; feel textures between fingers; listen closely when chewing; inhale aromas wafting from food items before tasting them fully.
This habit promotes awareness around meals instead of mindless consumption habits often seen today.

Listen intently

Listening intently means focusing completely on sounds around us without judgment or interpretation. Be it music played by someone else or sounds made naturally.
This could be birds chirping outside our windows in the early morning hours, perhaps even raindrops falling gently onto rooftops nearby.
This practice encourages active listening skills, which ultimately leads towards greater presence within ourselves, too. Over time spent practicing regularly enough, it becomes second nature eventually.

Observe surroundings mindfully

Observing surroundings mindfully entails taking a moment every now and then just to look around and notice details we might otherwise overlook.
These could be colors, shapes, textures, patterns, etc. These are present in our immediate vicinity, but often go unnoticed due to our busy schedules.
We tend to rush through life, focusing solely on tasks at hand, forgetting to appreciate the beauty surrounding us.

Makeup Mantras: Prajakta Koli gives a glimpse into her glam-meets-real makeup routine

Prajakta Koli, the Indian YouTuber turned actor and author known as MostlySane on social media, has built a fanbase with her relatable content. From comedy sketches on YouTube to GRWM (get ready with me) videos on Instagram, she invites audiences into her world with humour and style. In one of her latest GRWM on Instagram, the ‘Mismatched’ actor blends everyday life with her makeup tips. She starts with the basics: skincare prep that’s all about hydration and a smooth base. Prajakta emphasises moisturisation and SPF as non-negotiables, a foundation for makeup that feels skincare-forward rather than heavy.

Prajakta shares her makeup secret in her get ready with me video (Instagram)

For Makeup Mantra, by HT Shop Now, we looked into Prajakta Koli’s social media videos for her go-to makeup tricks and how to adapt them for everyday, confidence-boosting glam.

Clean and hydrated base (Prep First)

Prajakta begins with skincare, a crucial yet often overlooked step before makeup. She lightly moisturises and primes her skin, focusing on a smooth and hydrated base. She applies a lightweight sunscreen that smooths texture and protects skin from UV damage. It is advisable to never skip sunscreen. In fact, your sunscreen should be blendable and lightweight, offering maximum coverage.

Flawless foundation

Moving into complexion makeup, Prajakta opts for a foundation that’s medium coverage with a skin-like finish. Instead of full-on glam, she blends product with a dense brush, focusing on evenness without masking her natural skin texture. You can even use a damp sponge to apply foundation evenly onto your face.

Concealer and contouring

Prajakta beautifully addresses her under-eye areas while chit-chatting in the video. She follows up with a concealer under the eyes and on areas that need a bit more brightness, subtly lifting the face without looking cake-heavy. She then applies a soft contour with a warm brush around the cheekbones and jawline. Instead of making it too dramatic, she applies them enough to add dimension for the camera but not so intense it feels staged.

Lip lining, along with a nude lip shade

For lips, Prajakta lines her lips beautifully using a lip liner. She chooses a soft nude-pink liquid lipstick or tinted lip balm. This shade enhances her natural lips rather than making them the focal point, tying the whole makeup look together with a subtle, friendly vibe. A pro tip is that if you have dry lips, apply a lip balm first before any lipstick shade.

Eyelash curler for naturally curled lashes

Prajakta is known for her simple and subtle looks, and she keeps it minimal here as well. She chose an eyelash curler to lift her eyelashes and did not use any fake lashes to amp up her eyelashes. She keeps her eye makeup bare with no kajals, eyeliners, or mascara, a simple girl-next-door look.

Final glow — The setting spray moment

To seal the look, Prajakta sprinkles a setting spray or makeup fixer on her face. The result? A lit-from-within gleam that catches light beautifully in videos without turning glittery or distracting. The setting spray keeps your makeup intact in one place and prevents it from melting.

Why does this look work?

What makes Prajakta’s makeup routine so engaging isn’t just the products, it’s how she talks through each step, shares little preferences (like what she loves versus what didn’t work), and treats the entire process like a chat with friends. Her choices, from hydrated base to warm blush and natural lips, create a fresh, minimal makeup look that feels easy and subtle.

My Thoughts After 18+ Months

My Thoughts After 18+ Months

Recently my teenage son started – and won – a negotiation over bedtime with one sentence. He inherited my old Oura ring last year, and he used the data he’d collected to show me that delaying by 30-45 minutes would align better with his circadian rhythm.

My husband smirked as “sleep latency” casually rolled out of our son’s mouth, because data is one of my love languages.

That’s not to say I prefer graphs over personal experience, I pay close attention to my body’s cues – what helps me feel strong, rested, and nourished – but I also value objective markers and high quality research to help me make decisions.

So when Jaspr announced a sleep study that used Oura ring data to track the impact of their air scrubber, I immediately volunteered to participate. I love data, I love sleep, and I’m always up for a good experiment.

Plus, it’s not every day you see a company willing to test their product in real-world bedrooms where people actually sleep. That’s the kind of transparency I respect.

Jaspr sent me an air scrubber – which is different than an air purifier, as I’ll explain soon – to use throughout the study. I was allowed to keep it as a “thank you” for participating, and after using it for 18+ months, I’m seriously impressed.

Here are seven ways it stands out:

#1 – Independently Tested

Jaspr has undergone multiple rounds of independent testing, with consistently strong results. In one lab test, it achieved:

✅ 97.1% mold removal in 1 hour

✅ 99.8% mold removal in 2 hours

✅ 100% elimination in 3 hours

The results are available on this page if you want to check them out.

Jaspr also filters a wide range of everyday air pollutants, including

  • Microplastics
  • Dust, pollen, & other allergens
  • Smoke particles (wildfire, cigarette, incense/candles)
  • Pet dander
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from everyday things like cooking, furniture off-gassing, cleaning products, paint, and building materials

Also, in the sleep study I mentioned above – participants (that’s me!) on average fell asleep faster, stayed asleep longer, and got more deep sleep.

#2- Adapts To Your Environment

Jaspr doesn’t just run on autopilot – it adjusts as your environment changes. It uses built-in sensors to continuously monitor indoor air quality, including microscopic airborne particles (often called PM2.5 – things like cooking smoke, dust, and fine pollution) and VOCs, which are gases released from furniture, building materials, cleaning products, and everyday life.

When the air changes, Jaspr adjusts automatically. The display shifts from green to yellow or red and shows a number that reflects how many tiny particles it’s detecting in real time.

My kids love watching the light turn yellow when we cook, then drift back to green as the air clears. We love bacon – Jaspr doesn’t. 🙂

One quick note: Although this feature is technically called Smart Mode, it doesn’t increase EMF exposure. There’s no need to connect to an app via bluetooth or Wifi – the purifier doesn’t need any of those things to work.

And if you prefer more control, you can manually adjust the fan speed to whatever level feels right.

#3 – Whisper Quiet

Most of the time, Jaspr runs on its quietest setting, which is very quiet. If you’re like me you’ll barely know it’s on – which is perfect if you’re using it in a bedroom, office, or anywhere quiet matters.

#4 – Dark Mode For Sleep

As someone who put these LED light dimming stickers on all the bright indicator lights that seem to be standard on electronics these days, I appreciate that Jaspr comes with a built-in dark mode.

At night, one quick touch will turn off the display lights so that they don’t disrupt your sleep. One small area stays very dimly lit so you can find the button to turn the lights back on. If you want complete darkness, just cover it with a quarter or something similar.

#5 – Durable, Clean Design

Unlike most purifiers, which are pretty clunky, it has a minimalist design that blends into just about any decor style.

The exterior is steel, which can be endlessly recycled without losing strength (unlike plastic, which often ends up in landfills).

Also, it uses a 360° air intake, pulling air from all sides so you can place it against a wall without restricting airflow.

#6 – More Than A Typical Air Purifier

When you go to Jaspr’s site, you’ll see it’s described as an air scrubber, not an air purifier. If you’re thinking, “So . . . what exactly does that mean?” here’s how they explain it:

Air purifiers vary widely in quality. Most are made of plastic and designed to be compact, lightweight, and affordable. They often market large square footage coverage, but without clear context. These numbers frequently overlook critical variables like ceiling height, airflow efficiency, or actual air changes per hour (ACH) – a measure hub how often the air in a room is completely replaced.

For example, a purifier might claim to cover 1500 square feet but only deliver one air change per hour, which may not be sufficient in environments with ongoing pollutant sources. This lack of transparency is a common issue in the consumer air purifier market.

An air scrubber, by contrast, is a much more robust system originally designed for industrial and commercial use. Air scrubbers are built to handle high, contaminant loads, such as during . . . wildfire cleanup, or renovation projects.

They operate using high-powered fans and heavy duty filters to rapidly cycle and clean large volumes of air – often achieving multiple air changes per hour.

#7 – Lifetime Warranty (With filter subscription)

Maintenance is easy – the filter only needs to be replaced about every six months, and it takes less than a minute. If you prefer not to think about it, their subscription automatically sends a new filter on schedule and includes a discount.

The subscription also activates their lifetime warranty. If your purifier ever has an issue, they send a replacement and cover the return – no extra fees, no complicated process.

And I really do mean that.

Earlier this year, my husband and I bought a Jaspr for a space outside our home where our boys spend a lot of time. After a while it developed a slight noise, so he reached out to ask about an exchange.

They shipped a replacement quickly and paid to have the original returned.

My husband placed the order and handled the support request through his own account, so Jaspr had no idea I was paying attention – or that I would eventually write about the experience.

That mattered to me, because their FAQ page says, “Your Jaspr is covered for as long as your filter subscription is active. No catches, no hidden costs, ever.”

A promise like that only means something if it’s kept for every customer – not just when a company knows the interaction might end up in a review.

Air purifiers are an investment, so it’s not a small thing to have a warranty that actually feels like a warranty.

#8 – Free Shipping + Money Back Guarantee

Jaspr air scrubbers come with a 30-day money back guarantee, so you get to try it out and – if it’s not the right fit – you can send it back. (Just hang on to the box!)

Shipping is also free in the continental U.S. and Canada.

What does Jaspr’s 3-in-1 filter include?

Jaspr keeps things simple with a single, easy-to-replace filter that handles three stages of filtration, so you get strong air purification without juggling multiple parts.

The heavy-duty filter (about four pounds) combines three layers designed to work together:

Stage 1: The Pre-Filter

This outer layer captures larger particles like dust and pet hair. It also protects the layers underneath, helping the main filter last longer and maintain performance over time.

Stage 2: High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

Jaspr uses a HEPA filter that captures mold spores, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne irritants.

HEPA filters trap a minimum of 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter. For reference, a human hair is about 70 microns thick.

Here’s how Jaspr explains that in terms of real-world performance:

If an intake of air containing 10,000 particles of 0.3 microns in diameter passed through a HEPA filter, a maximum of only 3 out of the 10,000 particles would be allowed to pass through the filter.”

Stage 3: Carbon Filter

This is the part of the filter that targets VOCs – the invisible chemicals that can come from cooking, furniture off-gassing, cleaning supplies, or paint (though I always recommend choosing non-toxic paint options like ECOS whenever possible).

The carbon filter is interlaced within the HEPA filter, capturing and binding to pollutants like formaldehyde while also neutralizing odors.

When I first saw that they use about a pound of carbon, I wanted to know why. Some brands use more, so I wanted to understand the thinking behind the design.

I found a voice note from Jaspr’s founder explaining their approach – including why they chose that carbon load and why they use an H12 filter instead of an H13 or higher.

If you want behind-the-scenes insight into the tradeoffs (airflow, noise, and real-world performance), you can listen to it HERE.

The short version: they prioritized strong airflow, quieter operation, and the ability to clear fine particles quickly – the things most people notice day to day.

If you’re considering a Jaspr

After using Jaspr for more than a year – through a sleep study, controlled burns in nearby forests, everyday cooking, and normal family life – I’ve been consistently impressed with both the air scrubber and the company behind it.

That’s why when my daughter moves to college next year, she’ll be bringing her own Jaspr with her.

If indoor air quality is something you’ve been meaning to prioritize, this is a well-built, performance-focused option that’s designed to last.

One of the biggest reasons I feel comfortable recommending Jaspr is their warranty. A truly good air purifier / scrubber is an investment, but as long as your filter subscription is active, your unit stays covered under their lifetime support policy.

In our experience, the process is refreshingly easy when you actually need it. If you decide it’s a fit for your home, use code MP to save $250.
