Inside Bon Charge’s bet on the booming beauty tech market

Inside Bon Charge’s bet on the booming beauty tech market

What began with a pair of blue-light-blocking glasses has evolved into a broader wellness technology business with red light at its centre. Bon Charge co-founder Katie Mant speaks to Retail Beauty about building a category before consumers understood it, knowing when to rebrand and why the next phase of beauty tech will be won on evidence rather than hype.

When Katie and Andy Mant launched their business from Perth in 2017, the beauty technology landscape looked very different.

LED face masks had yet to become a regular fixture across beauty feeds and bathroom cabinets, wellness technology remained relatively niche, and the business that would eventually become Bon Charge was focused on a considerably narrower proposition: blue-light-blocking glasses.

Originally launched as BLUblox, the company was born from the founders’ own search for a solution to the amount of artificial light accompanying increasingly screen-heavy lifestyles.

“Andy and I were both fighting our own sleep problems, Andy especially, working long hours on screens late into the night,” Katie Mant tells Retail Beauty.

“When we went looking for blue-light glasses that actually blocked the right wavelengths and didn’t look like gaming goggles, they didn’t exist. So, we made them.”

What followed offers a case study in building a business around an emerging consumer behaviour — and then recognising when the category has moved beyond the proposition that first established it.

“The early years taught us that building a new category is really about education,” Mant says. “You can’t sell the solution until people understand the problem.”

Today, the proposition extends well beyond the blue-light glasses that launched the business. Bon Charge operates across red light therapy, PEMF and circadian lighting, positioning itself at the increasingly blurred intersection of beauty, recovery, performance and longevity.

That breadth also reflects the founders’ complementary perspectives. Andy Mant has become closely associated with the performance optimisation and biohacking side of the business, while Katie brings a stronger focus on women’s wellness and beauty — a combination that has helped Bon Charge broaden its relevance as wellness technology moves further into everyday consumer routines.

From niche technology to beauty routine

Red light therapy has become one of the most visible parts of the at-home beauty-device market, helped by the proliferation of LED masks and growing consumer interest in treatments that sit somewhere between skincare, beauty technology and professional aesthetics.

There is legitimate scientific research behind photobiomodulation, although the evidence should not be interpreted as meaning every device or every marketing claim is equally supported.

Clinical research has found benefits from particular LED protocols for aspects of skin appearance. A randomised controlled trial involving 137 women, for example, found both 660nm red light and 590nm amber light reduced periocular wrinkle volume following 10 sessions over four weeks. Earlier randomised research has also reported improvements in wrinkles using 660nm LEDs. (PubMed)

The important distinction for retailers is that wavelength, dose, treatment protocol and device specifications matter. Photobiomodulation is a defined light-based technology rather than a catch-all term for anything emitting red light; the US Food and Drug Administration describes PBM devices as delivering non-heating light energy and has specific regulatory guidance covering medical devices in the category. (US Food and Drug Administration)

For Bon Charge, that shift from curiosity to scrutiny is becoming commercially significant.

The company’s Global Wellness Tech Trend Report 2026, based on a survey of 7,000 adults across Australia, the US, UK and UAE, found 34 per cent of respondents reported using red light therapy, while 86 per cent of red-light users surveyed said they had started within the previous two years.

Beauty is playing a significant role in that uptake. According to the brand’s research, improving the appearance of dull or tired-looking skin was the most commonly cited primary motivation for using red light therapy, at 27 per cent. The report also found adults under 35 were leading adoption across the wellness technology categories it surveyed.

For Mant, however, the change in consumer behaviour is unmistakable.

“Consumers have shifted from ‘what does this claim’ to ‘what can this prove’,” she says. “They want efficacy and evidence, not just aspiration.”

The rebrand that unlocked the next stage

By 2022, the business had another problem: the name that helped establish it was beginning to restrict it.

BLUblox described a company built around blue-light management. By then, its portfolio had expanded into red light, infrared and other wellness technologies.

The founders made the decision to retire BLUblox and relaunch as Bon Charge.

“BLUblox captured where we started, but not where we’d transformed into,” Mant says.

“The name spoke only to blue light blocking, while the business had grown into something far broader. Bon Charge gave us room to reflect that fuller picture, red light at the core, and a mission bigger than any single product.”

For beauty founders, Mant believes there is a broader lesson in recognising when brand equity has started to become brand constraint.

“When your name starts explaining less than your product does, it’s a sign you’ve outgrown it,” she says.

Beauty tech’s credibility problem

The expansion of at-home beauty devices has created opportunity, but it has also made the category considerably more difficult to navigate.

LED masks now sit across dramatically different price points and specifications, while terms such as “clinically proven”, “science-backed” and “medical grade” have become powerful marketing currency.

Mant argues the next stage of the market will require consumers — and the retailers curating products for them — to look beyond those descriptors.

“Ask for the specifics,” she says. “Credible brands publish their wavelengths and irradiance and can point to independent research.

“Be cautious of vague claims, missing numbers, and ‘clinically proven’ with nothing behind it. Third-party testing, transparency about what a device does and doesn’t do, and honesty about limitations are the real tells.”

It is an increasingly relevant distinction.

Scientific evidence supporting a particular wavelength or photobiomodulation protocol does not automatically substantiate the performance claims of every commercial device using similar technology. Device design, irradiance, dose, treatment time and intended use can all influence outcomes.

Bon Charge has responded to that credibility challenge by assembling a Scientific Advisory Board spanning medicine, metabolism, dentistry and wellness. Its current board includes Dr Rangan Chatterjee, metabolism researcher Dr Susanna Søberg and Dr Shabana Daya, a physician whose qualifications include a diploma in clinical dermatology.

Mant says that scrutiny is intentional.

“They guide our product innovation, validate our technology, and keep us honest about what the evidence supports and what it doesn’t.”

Building beyond beauty

Perhaps the more interesting development for retailers is that Bon Charge no longer sees red light as belonging exclusively to beauty.

The brand is positioning the technology across beauty, wellness and recovery — categories that were once merchandised and marketed relatively independently but increasingly overlap in the consumer’s routine.

That strategy has extended into sport. In February, Premier League club Fulham FC announced Bon Charge as its Official Red Light and Recovery Partner, integrating the brand’s technology into its recovery environment. (Fulham FC)

For Mant, that crossover reflects a wider change in how consumers think about wellness technology.

“Previously, the focus was solely around beauty and skin appearance,” she says. “Now, we are noticing a notable interest from a recovery perspective and this is only growing.”

The move also broadens the addressable consumer beyond the traditional beauty-device shopper.

Bon Charge’s 2026 research found men and younger adults were among the groups driving wellness-tech adoption, challenging assumptions about who is buying into a category that, at least at retail, can often be presented through a predominantly female beauty lens.

The founder lesson: scale exposes the cracks

As the business expanded internationally, Mant says some of its biggest lessons had relatively little to do with marketing.

“The biggest lesson was to earn one market before chasing many,” she says.

“What surprised us most was how much of international growth comes down to the unglamorous work — logistics and compliance are far harder than building the product, and every country has its own rules for wellness devices.”

Her advice for Australian beauty and wellness founders contemplating international expansion is similarly pragmatic.

“The two things I’d tell any founder to get genuinely sorted before you scale are your science and your supply chain because growth doesn’t fix your weak points, it magnifies them,” she says.

“Every gap we hadn’t closed came back to find us the moment volume picked up.”

There was another lesson: global expansion did not require disguising the brand’s Australian roots.

“Early on you assume you need to sound bigger, more polished and more ‘global’,” Mant says. “The opposite was true as being a credible, no-nonsense Australian founded brand has been one of our greatest assets.

“Lead with what makes you different, not what makes you blend in.”

Where beauty retail goes next

Bon Charge’s trajectory reflects a bigger shift underway across beauty retail.

The line separating skincare, devices, wellness and performance is becoming less distinct. At the same time, consumers have access to more scientific information — and considerably more marketing dressed up as science — than ever before.

That makes curation increasingly important.

For retailers, the opportunity may therefore be less about simply adding another LED mask to the assortment and more about helping consumers understand why devices differ, what specifications matter and what the available evidence can — and cannot — establish.

Mant believes the brands capable of answering those questions will have an advantage.

“This generation treats wellness as daily and preventative, not an occasional treat or a fix when something’s wrong,” she says.

“They blend beauty, health and performance into a single routine, and they research relentlessly. They’ll reward retailers who curate for credibility and take the time to educate, and they’ll walk away from anyone who overpromises.”

That principle is also shaping Bon Charge’s next chapter.

Rather than expanding indiscriminately across the rapidly growing wellness-device market, Mant says the company intends to concentrate on its core categories and deepen its investment in evidence.

“What’s next for us is really about depth over breadth,” she says. “Rather than chasing every new device or trend, we want to keep raising the bar on evidence.”

For a company that began by having to explain why its category existed at all, it marks a notable shift.

The challenge is no longer convincing consumers to pay attention to wellness technology.

It is convincing an increasingly informed consumer which technology deserves their trust.

Mila Raises $2.5 Million Pre-Seed To Market Intimate Wellness As An Integral Element Of Daily Self-Care

Mila Raises $2.5 Million Pre-Seed To Market Intimate Wellness As An Integral Element Of Daily Self-Care

Mila, the new female-founded, design-led intimate wellness brand, announced the close of an oversubscribed $2.5 million pre-seed funding round

Mila

Mila, the female-founded, design-led intimate wellness brand, has closed an oversubscribed $2.5 million pre-seed funding round led by Mensch VC, with participation from Sticker Ventures and a group of angel investors and advisors from companies including Spotify, Dyson, Tetra Pak, and BrewDog.

The funding marks an important milestone for a company seeking to reshape how women think about intimate wellness. At Women’s Wellness: The Next Revolution, a conference led by RetailMediaIQ, one panel titled “What’s Changing the Script” explored what’s emerging and what brands need to know to stay ahead in beauty and wellness retail. One trend was clear: from powerhouses like Naomi Watts’ Stripes redefining perimenopausal and menopausal care to brands like Lola and Saalt elevating menstrual wellness, startups addressing women’s needs are beginning to unlock a massive market that has remained underserved for decades.

While beauty, skincare, menstrual care, and wellness have transformed everyday routines through thoughtful design, premium ingredients, and building rituals, Mila believes intimate care has remained overlooked. Rather than treating intimacy as either a clinical necessity or a taboo subject, the company is designing products that integrate into modern self-care.

In 2026, the Mila cofounders raised a $2.5 million pre-seed funding round to develop elevated essentials for sexual health.

Mila

Founded by friends Kim Aviv and Ada Trujillo, Mila combines consumer-first branding with proprietary product development to create a new generation of “pleasure accessories.” Its growing portfolio includes Aura, a patent-pending 4-in-1 intimate wellness device developed over 18 months in collaboration with leading engineers, and Bloom, a hydrating intimate gliding mist formulated with skincare-inspired ingredients for comfort and hydration.

With fresh capital, the company plans to accelerate research and development, expand its product portfolio, pursue potential mass retail partnerships, and continue building what its founders describe as a new category—one where intimate wellness is approached with the same care, design, and intention consumers already expect from beauty and skincare. In the following conversation, Aviv and Trujillo discuss the inspiration behind Mila, their product philosophy, fundraising journey, and why they believe women deserve rituals for every part of self-care.

Q: Neither of you came from the intimate wellness industry. What drew you to this space?

Kim Aviv: My background is in finance and technology. Before Mila, I was the COO of a fintech company that scaled to approximately $4.5 billion in assets under management. I’ve always loved building companies, but I wanted to work on something that felt deeply personal and capable of improving women’s everyday lives.

Ada Trujillo: My background is in branding and marketing, and I connected with this category the same way millions of women do—as a consumer. As a former Division I basketball player who also played professionally overseas, intimate-care products were already part of my routine. I understood firsthand how important they were, but I also saw how little innovation or thoughtful branding existed.

Q: How did the idea for Mila first come together?

Kim: Ada and I were close friends before we became co-founders. We spent nearly two weeks isolating ourselves in an Airbnb, researching every aspect of the category. The deeper we looked, the clearer the opportunity became. There wasn’t a trusted, modern brand speaking to women the way skincare or beauty brands do. We realized intimate wellness had been shaped by legacy companies and decades of stigma rather than by the expectations of today’s consumer.

Ada: We kept asking the same questions. Why do so many products look the same? Why are ingredients treated as an afterthought? Women expect better design, better formulations, and better experiences everywhere else in their lives. We wanted to bring those same expectations into intimate wellness and create an entirely new category built around intention instead of embarrassment.

Q: You often compare Mila to beauty brands rather than traditional sexual wellness companies. Why?

Ada: Beauty companies transformed everyday products into rituals. They educated consumers about ingredients, routines, and self-care. We believe intimate wellness deserves that same evolution. We often say we’re building skincare for your most intimate areas. Women carefully choose their skincare and haircare products. Why shouldn’t they expect that same level of quality and transparency from intimate care?

Q: What makes Aura different from existing products on the market?

Kim: We spent 18 months developing Aura and worked alongside leading engineers to rethink how pleasure technology could better support women’s experiences. Rather than simply iterating on existing technology, we focused on creating patent-pending stimulation methods designed to address the earliest stages of female arousal. Every design decision was driven by extensive research, testing, and feedback from women.

Q: Mila also offers cosmetic intimate-care products. Why was that important?

Kim: We repeatedly heard women talk about irritation, discomfort, and formulations that simply didn’t meet the standards they expected from skincare. That’s why we developed Bloom, our hydrating intimate gliding mist. We prioritized premium ingredients, hydration, pH-conscious formulation, and overall comfort because we believe women deserve products they can trust.

Ada: Across every product, our philosophy is the same. We invest heavily in research and development because intimate wellness should receive the same level of care and innovation as every other category in beauty.

Q: How do you differentiate Mila from other brands in the category?

Ada: We admire companies that helped normalize conversations around sexual wellness, but our positioning is different. We sit at the intersection of beauty, wellness, and intimacy. We develop our own products, own our formulations, and intentionally design everything ourselves. We also avoid the extremes of being either hypersexualized or overly clinical. We want Mila to feel completely at home alongside the rest of someone’s self-care routine.

Kim: Sexual wellness isn’t a niche category—it’s relevant to half the population. Our goal is to build a trusted brand that women can turn to throughout every stage of life.

Mila’s Aura pleasure accessory

Mila

Q: Tell us about your fundraising journey.

Ada: We were fortunate to find investors who understood both the category and our long-term vision. Building entirely new products in a historically taboo space came with challenges, but we ultimately raised more than we initially planned, and the round became oversubscribed. That confidence from investors reinforced what we’d believed from the beginning—that women are ready for a more modern approach to intimate wellness.

Q: What’s next for Mila?

Medical Aesthetics Market Production Analysis, Opportunity Assessments, Market Revenue, Advancement Strategy and Geographical Performance Forecast to 2030

Medical Aesthetics Market Production Analysis, Opportunity Assessments, Market Revenue, Advancement Strategy and Geographical Performance Forecast to 2030

Global Medical Aesthetics Market Overview
The global medical aesthetics market is witnessing significant momentum and is projected to grow at a robust pace over the coming years. Industry estimates indicate that the market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of approximately twelve percent during the forecast period. The strong growth outlook is primarily supported by the increasing preference for minimally invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures among consumers across the world. As awareness regarding aesthetic treatments continues to expand, individuals are becoming more open to procedures that help improve their physical appearance and maintain youthful skin.

Another major factor contributing to market expansion is the rising social acceptance of aesthetic enhancements. Cosmetic procedures, which were once considered exclusive or stigmatized, are now widely accepted as part of modern self-care and wellness practices. People are increasingly prioritizing personal grooming, skincare, and aesthetic improvement, which is positively influencing the demand for advanced treatment solutions. Continuous technological innovation in aesthetic devices and treatment platforms is also playing a crucial role in shaping the industry landscape.

In addition to social and technological trends, demographic changes are further supporting market growth. The global population is aging at a steady pace, leading to a higher demand for treatments that address age-related skin concerns such as wrinkles, sagging skin, pigmentation, and loss of facial volume. At the same time, rising disposable income levels in several developing and emerging economies are enabling consumers to spend more on cosmetic and wellness services. Medical tourism is also emerging as a significant contributor, with many patients traveling internationally to access high-quality aesthetic treatments at competitive prices. As these trends continue to evolve, the medical aesthetics market is expected to maintain strong growth momentum.

Medical Aesthetics Industry Overview
Medical aesthetics is a specialized segment of the healthcare and cosmetic industry that focuses on enhancing physical appearance through a wide range of medical and cosmetic procedures. These procedures may include non-invasive treatments, minimally invasive interventions, and surgical procedures designed to improve skin health, facial structure, and overall body appearance. The goal of medical aesthetics is to deliver safe and effective cosmetic improvements that enhance natural beauty while maintaining a balanced and natural look.

The field encompasses a variety of treatment categories such as skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, pigmentation correction, facial contouring, hair removal, fat reduction, and body sculpting. Popular procedures performed within the medical aesthetics space include botulinum toxin injections, dermal fillers, laser treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, body contouring treatments, and cosmetic surgical procedures. These treatments help address a wide range of cosmetic concerns including fine lines, uneven skin tone, unwanted hair, acne scars, and excess body fat.

Medical aesthetics combines clinical expertise with advanced technology to achieve precise and personalized treatment outcomes. Physicians, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and trained aesthetic practitioners use sophisticated devices and injectable products to deliver targeted improvements while ensuring patient safety. As beauty standards continue to evolve and social media increases awareness about aesthetic procedures, the demand for these services is expanding across different demographic groups.

Younger individuals are increasingly opting for preventive aesthetic treatments to maintain skin health and delay signs of aging. Meanwhile, older populations are seeking age-defying treatments that restore youthful appearance and boost self-confidence. In addition to physical enhancement, medical aesthetic procedures are also associated with improved psychological well-being, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

Technological Advancements in Aesthetic Devices Are Transforming the Market
Technological innovation remains one of the most influential factors driving the evolution of the medical aesthetics market. Continuous advancements in aesthetic treatment devices are enabling practitioners to perform procedures with higher precision, improved safety profiles, and enhanced patient outcomes. Modern aesthetic technologies have significantly reduced treatment downtime and discomfort, making cosmetic procedures more convenient and accessible to a broader population.

Innovations such as hybrid laser platforms and fractional resurfacing technologies have revolutionized skin rejuvenation procedures. These systems enable practitioners to treat various skin conditions including wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation irregularities, and sun damage with greater efficiency. Cryolipolysis technology has also gained popularity for non-surgical fat reduction, allowing targeted removal of stubborn fat deposits without the need for invasive surgery.

Ultrasound-based lifting technologies and radiofrequency energy systems are further transforming non-surgical skin tightening procedures. These technologies stimulate collagen production in deeper layers of the skin, helping to improve skin elasticity and firmness. Patients increasingly prefer these treatments because they provide noticeable improvements without the recovery period associated with traditional surgical procedures.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies are also beginning to influence the aesthetic treatment landscape. AI-driven tools can analyze skin characteristics, detect underlying conditions, and recommend personalized treatment plans based on individual skin profiles. These advanced diagnostic capabilities enable practitioners to deliver highly customized treatment outcomes that align with patient expectations.

Another emerging trend is the development of portable and home-use aesthetic devices. These devices allow consumers to maintain skin health and perform basic cosmetic treatments in the comfort of their homes. From LED therapy masks to handheld radiofrequency skin tightening devices, the availability of consumer-friendly technology is expanding the reach of aesthetic care beyond traditional clinics and hospitals. As innovation continues, the integration of digital diagnostics, computer-guided injectables, and robotic-assisted cosmetic procedures may further redefine the future of medical aesthetics.

Growing Demand for Minimally Invasive and Non-Invasive Procedures
The increasing demand for minimally invasive and non-invasive aesthetic procedures is one of the most powerful drivers fueling market expansion. Consumers today prefer cosmetic treatments that deliver effective results while minimizing discomfort, risk, and recovery time. Unlike traditional cosmetic surgeries, these procedures can typically be completed within a short time and allow patients to resume their daily activities almost immediately.

Procedures such as botulinum toxin injections, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, laser hair removal, chemical peels, micro-needling, and non-surgical skin tightening have gained immense popularity worldwide. These treatments offer visible improvements in skin texture, facial volume, and overall appearance while maintaining a natural look. The quick treatment sessions and predictable results make them particularly appealing for individuals with busy lifestyles.

Technological advancements have also enhanced the effectiveness of minimally invasive treatments. Next-generation technologies such as high-intensity focused ultrasound, non-ablative laser systems, and radiofrequency microneedling devices have expanded the range of aesthetic solutions available to patients. These treatments can address multiple cosmetic concerns including wrinkle reduction, skin laxity, pigmentation issues, cellulite reduction, and facial contouring.

As aesthetic treatments become more efficient and accessible, their adoption is increasing among both men and women across different age groups. Social media influence, celebrity endorsements, and growing awareness of skincare and anti-aging solutions are further encouraging consumers to explore non-surgical aesthetic treatments. With continuous improvements in technology and treatment techniques, minimally invasive procedures are expected to remain a central growth driver in the medical aesthetics market.

(MENAFN- EIN Presswire) EINPresswire/ — The global hand cream market is poised for consistent growth over the coming years, supported by increasing consumer awareness of skincare, rising hygiene practices, and continuous product innovation. The global hand cream market size is likely to be valued at US$801.4 million in 2025 and is anticipated to reach US$1,237.2 million by 2032, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% during the forecast period from 2025 to 2032.

Marine Collagen and Peptides in Skincare and Anti-Aging Products Market Set to Double by 2033, Driven by 'Blue Beauty' and Clean Label Trends

Marine Collagen and Peptides in Skincare and Anti-Aging Products Market Set to Double by 2033, Driven by ‘Blue Beauty’ and Clean Label Trends

LONDON, Jan. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The global beauty and wellness industry is witnessing a significant paradigm shift as consumer preference pivots toward marine-sourced ingredients. A comprehensive new market research report titled Marine Collagen & Peptides in Skincare & Anti-Aging Products Market Size, Future Growth and Forecast 2034 reveals that this niche sector is poised for robust expansion over the next decade. Valued at $1.10 billion in 2024, the market is projected to reach a valuation of $2.20 billion by 2033, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.41% during the forecast period from 2025 to 2033.

The report offers an exhaustive analysis of the market dynamics, segmenting the industry by source (Fish, Jellyfish, Others), application (Skincare, Anti-Aging, Haircare, Others), distribution channel (Online, Offline), and key geographic regions. This growth trajectory underscores a deepening consumer awareness regarding the efficacy of marine bioactives, alongside a surging demand for sustainable, natural, and scientifically backed beauty solutions.

The Rise of Marine Bioactives in Modern Skincare

The doubling of market valuation by 2033 is not merely a statistical anomaly but a reflection of a fundamental change in consumer behavior. The report highlights that the primary catalyst for this growth is the increasing consumer awareness concerning the specific benefits of marine collagen and peptides. Unlike bovine or porcine alternatives, marine collagen is increasingly favored for its superior bioavailability and smaller peptide size, which allows for deeper penetration into the dermis.

This surge is inextricably linked to the broader ‘clean beauty’ movement. Today’s consumers are far more scrutinized regarding ingredient lists. There is a rising preference for natural and organic ingredients, moving away from synthetic compounds. Marine collagen fits perfectly into this narrative, offering a potent anti-aging solution that is perceived as both effective and essentially natural.

Furthermore, the global demographics are shifting. An aging population across developed nations is actively seeking non-invasive but effective anti-aging solutions. This demographic cohort has significant disposable income and is willing to invest in premium skincare products that promise to restore skin elasticity, hydration, and overall youthful appearance. The report indicates that this trend is pushing manufacturers to innovate rapidly, moving beyond basic creams to advanced serums and ingestible beauty supplements.

Technological Advancements Driving Efficacy

A critical factor propelling this market forward is the rapid advancement in extraction and processing technologies. In the past, extracting high-quality collagen from marine sources could be cost-prohibitive and technically challenging, often resulting in products with a strong odor or lower efficacy. However, the report notes that recent technological strides have revolutionized this process.

New hydrolysis methods are enabling manufacturers to produce odorless, tasteless, and highly soluble collagen peptides. These advancements enhance the application potential of marine collagen, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into a wider variety of skincare formulations without compromising the sensory experience of the final product. These technological improvements are crucial for market expansion, as they allow brands to offer superior products that deliver visible results, thereby fostering high rates of consumer retention and brand loyalty.

Detailed Segmentation Analysis: Sources and Applications

The market report provides a granular analysis of various segments, offering strategic insights into where the highest growth potential lies.

  • Source Analysis: The market is primarily categorized into fish, jellyfish, and other marine sources. Currently, fish-derived collagen reigns supreme. Its dominance is attributed to high bioavailability and high compatibility with human skin structure. The report emphasizes that sustainable sourcing of fish collagen is becoming a major competitive differentiator. However, the market is also witnessing the emergence of jellyfish collagen. While still in its nascent stages, jellyfish collagen is identified as a high-potential source due to its unique bioactive compounds and high collagen concentration. This presents a frontier for innovation, offering opportunities for brands to differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace.
  • Application Landscape: In terms of application, the skincare segment remains the dominant force. Marine collagen is now a staple ingredient in moisturizers, facial masks, and restorative serums. However, the anti-aging segment is the fastest-growing vertical. This is driven by the specific ability of marine peptides to stimulate the body’s own collagen production, directly addressing the root causes of skin aging. Additionally, the report identifies haircare as an emerging application. Marine collagen is believed to strengthen hair follicles and improve texture, leading to a new wave of ‘skinification’ of hair products, where skincare-grade ingredients are used in shampoos and conditioners.

Regional Market Dynamics and Top Countries Insights

The report offers a comprehensive geographical breakdown, highlighting how cultural and economic differences shape market demand.

  • North America (The United States): The U.S. stands out as a leading market with a size of approximately $500 million and a steady CAGR of 6%. The growth here is driven by a sophisticated consumer base that values high-performance skincare. The U.S. market is characterized by a strong willingness to pay for premium brands and a robust presence of major market players. The explosion of e-commerce has further fueled growth, allowing niche marine collagen brands to reach a nationwide audience instantly.
  • Asia Pacific (China, Japan, South Korea): This region is a powerhouse for marine collagen products.
    • China: With a market size of around $400 million and a burgeoning CAGR of 8%, China represents a massive opportunity. Rising disposable incomes and the rapid urbanization of the country have led to a boom in beauty spending. The influence of social media and beauty influencers (KOLs) is particularly strong here, driving trends and educating consumers on the benefits of peptides.
    • Japan: Valued at roughly $300 million, Japan’s market is mature and highly sophisticated. Japanese consumers have a long-standing cultural acceptance of collagen, both topical and ingestible. The demand here is for high-science, innovative products, with a growing emphasis on ethical sourcing.
    • South Korea: Known globally as a trendsetter in beauty (K-Beauty), South Korea holds a market size of approximately $200 million. The emphasis here is on multi-step skincare routines where marine collagen plays a pivotal role in hydration and repair steps.
  • Europe (Germany): Germany leads the European market with a size of about $250 million. The German consumer is famously discerning, prioritizing scientific validation and ‘clean’ labels. The strong focus on health and wellness in Germany aligns perfectly with the marine collagen value proposition.

Competitive Landscape and Key Players

The report describes a highly competitive and dynamic market environment. It is a mix of established global giants and agile emerging players, all striving to capture market share through innovation and strategic branding.

Key players analyzed in the report include:

  • Rousselot: A prominent leader known for high-quality marine collagen and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.
  • Gelita AG: Recognized for its wide range of specific collagen peptides tailored for optimized efficacy in skincare applications.
  • Amicogen: A South Korean innovator specializing in bioactive peptides and advanced enzymatic technologies.
  • Nitta Gelatin: A Japanese key player highly regarded for quality and performance consistency.
  • Vital Proteins: A brand that has successfully bridged the gap between wellness supplements and beauty, particularly in the U.S. market.
  • Seagarden: A Norwegian company that leverages its geographic advantage to offer sustainably sourced marine ingredients.

The competitive dynamics are defined by product innovation and distribution strategies. Companies are increasingly investing in Research and Development (R&D) to create proprietary formulations that offer synergistic benefits, such as combining marine collagen with vitamins and antioxidants.

Challenges, Threats, and Strategic Barriers

Despite the optimistic forecast, the report provides a balanced view by outlining potential hurdles. A primary challenge is the complex regulatory landscape. Sourcing marine ingredients involves navigating strict international and local regulations regarding fishing quotas, environmental impact, and processing standards. Compliance can be costly and time-consuming.

Furthermore, the cost of production remains a restraining factor. High-quality marine collagen is more expensive to produce than bovine or synthetic alternatives. This places pressure on profit margins, particularly for smaller players who lack economies of scale. The market is also subject to intense competition, which can lead to price wars, making it difficult for companies to maintain profitability without strong brand differentiation.

Distribution Channels: The Digital Shift

The distribution landscape is evolving rapidly. While offline channels like pharmacies, specialty beauty stores, and department stores remain vital for brand prestige and customer experience, the online channel is witnessing explosive growth.

The report details that online retailing is becoming crucial for market expansion, particularly in emerging markets where physical retail infrastructure for premium beauty may be limited. Digital marketing, social media campaigns, and direct-to-consumer (DTC) models allow brands to educate consumers directly about the complex science behind peptides, a task that is often difficult to achieve on a crowded retail shelf.

Strategic Foresight: 2025-2033

Looking ahead, the report outlines a strategic roadmap for the industry. The period from 2025 to 2033 will be characterized by a shift from basic extraction methods to advanced processing technologies that maximize yield and purity.

Opportunities for growth abound in product diversification. The report suggests that the next frontier lies in personalized skincare solutions. As data analytics and AI enter the beauty space, brands that can offer customized marine collagen regimens based on individual skin types and concerns will likely lead the market. Additionally, the integration of marine collagen into hybrid products—such as makeup with skincare benefits—presents a significant avenue for innovation.

Rice-based Skincare Products Market Report 2026

Rice-based Skincare Products Market Report 2026

Company Logo

The global rice-based skincare market is poised for growth due to rising demand for plant-based, gentle skincare, influenced by Asian beauty trends. Key opportunities include expanding hybrid formulations that combine rice extracts with clinical actives and developing luxury lines using Rice Stem Cell Technology.

Rice-based Skincare Products Market

Rice-based Skincare Products Market · GlobeNewswire Inc.

Dublin, Jan. 26, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The “Rice-based Skincare Products Market – Global Industry Size, Share, Trends, Opportunity, and Forecast, 2021-2031” has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

The Global Rice-based Skincare Products Market is projected to expand from USD 6.89 Billion in 2025 to USD 10.88 Billion by 2031, achieving a CAGR of 7.91%

These cosmetic formulations harness derivatives such as fermented rice filtrate, rice water, and rice bran oil, which are prized for their rich content of antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids. This market growth is fundamentally underpinned by increasing worldwide demand for clean, plant-based ingredients and the enduring popularity of Asian beauty regimens that emphasize skin barrier health and hydration. Consequently, rice extracts have evolved from transient commodities into staple functional ingredients, reinforced by a growing preference for gentle exfoliants that are safe for sensitive skin types.

However, the market faces significant hurdles due to the volatility of raw material costs driven by agricultural supply chain disruptions and climate change, which directly affect the availability and pricing of premium cosmetic-grade rice. Manufacturers are challenged to source high-quality, contaminant-free extracts while striving to keep end-product pricing affordable amidst these uncertainties. Highlighting the sector’s economic significance, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reported that exports of basic skincare products: a key category for these rice-based formulations: totaled USD 7.67 billion in 2024, underscoring the critical reliance on a stable supply of these essential natural ingredients.

Market Drivers

The expansion of K-Beauty and J-Beauty philosophies globally acts as a primary driver for the Rice-based Skincare Products Market, effectively popularizing traditional Asian ingredients on an international scale. By prioritizing deep hydration and the reinforcement of the skin barrier, these regimens have elevated rice derivatives, such as bran oil and fermented rice water, from niche additives to essential, high-efficacy components. The massive global adoption of these multi-step routines is reflected in substantial trade figures; according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in January 2025, South Korea recorded a historic high of USD 10.2 billion in cosmetic exports during 2024, demonstrating how these ingredient-focused products have successfully transcended domestic markets to capture significant shares in Western regions.

Story Continues

Simultaneously, the market is being propelled by a shifting consumer preference toward organic and clean label formulations. Modern buyers are increasingly examining product ingredients, favoring non-toxic, plant-derived options over synthetic alternatives, a trend that aligns well with the biodegradable and hypoallergenic nature of rice extracts. This demand for natural efficacy and transparency is reshaping corporate strategies; an NSF survey from March 2025 indicated that 74% of consumers view organic ingredients as a critical factor in personal care purchases. This consumer shift is commercially validated by major industry players, such as Unilever, which reported in July 2025 that its Japanese heritage brand, Tatcha, achieved double-digit growth in the first half of the year, confirming the strong viability of premium, nature-inspired skincare.

Market Challenges

A major impediment to the growth of the global rice-based skincare market is the instability of agricultural supply chains and the resulting volatility in raw material costs. Disruptions in global rice production caused by climate change make it increasingly difficult for manufacturers to secure a reliable stream of the premium, contaminant-free extracts necessary for high-quality cosmetics. This unpredictability creates fluctuating input costs that squeeze profit margins and hinder brands from maintaining the affordable pricing structures required for mass-market adoption, ultimately deterring long-term investment in product lines reliant on specific, high-quality rice strains.

Recent industry data on global inventory levels further underscores these supply chain constraints. The United States Department of Agriculture reported in September 2024 that global rice ending stocks were projected to drop to 177.2 million tons, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline. This sustained contraction in global reserves signals a tightening availability of the core commodity, fostering a volatile sourcing landscape that directly impedes the industry’s ability to scale operations efficiently to meet rising consumer demand.

Market Trends

Product efficacy standards are being redefined by the hybridization of rice extracts with clinical actives such as Retinol and Niacinamide, transforming the category from simple hydration to functional dermatological care. Manufacturers are blending traditional fermented rice filtrates with high-potency synthetic ingredients to develop “clean-ical” formulations that satisfy consumers who are both label-conscious and performance-driven. This approach enables brands to position rice-based serums and sunscreens as multi-tasking solutions that protect, brighten, and repair the skin barrier. The success of this strategy is evident in trade data; the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reported in November 2025 that cosmetic exports for the first half of the year rose by 14.9% year-on-year to USD 5.51 billion, a growth largely fueled by the global adoption of these hybrid formulations.

In parallel, the market is seeing the rise of Rice Stem Cell Technology within premium anti-aging segments, elevating rice from a mass-market staple to a luxury biotechnology asset. By utilizing advanced extraction techniques to isolate bioactive peptides and rice stem cells, premium brands are creating sophisticated lines that claim to promote collagen synthesis and cellular regeneration, distinguishing them from standard moisturizing products. This trend caters to affluent consumers looking for scientifically proven natural ingredients, allowing companies to improve margins and premiumize their portfolios despite raw material volatility. The financial success of this high-end positioning is reflected in Kose Corporation’s February 2025 report, which cited a 7.4% year-on-year increase in net sales to 322.8 billion yen for Fiscal Year 2024, driven significantly by prestige skincare brands leveraging proprietary rice fermentation technologies.
