Are Teenagers Using Anti-Aging Products Too Soon?

Are Teenagers Using Anti-Aging Products Too Soon?

Dermatologists are increasingly concerned that teenagers are using anti-aging products designed for mature skin, often influenced by social media beauty trends. Experts say many of these products may be unnecessary and could even irritate young skin when used incorrectly.

Highlights:

  • Many teenagers are using anti-aging products despite having no signs of skin aging
  • Experts warn that ingredients such as retinol and strong exfoliants may irritate young skin
  • A simple skincare routine is often sufficient for most teenagers

Anti-aging skincare was once marketed primarily to adults concerned about wrinkles, fine lines, and age-related skin changes. Today, however, dermatologists are seeing a surprising new trend. Teenagers are increasingly purchasing and using anti-aging products promoted by influencers and beauty content creators on social media. While skincare awareness can be positive, experts warn that some young people may be exposing their skin to unnecessary ingredients long before they are needed. The growing popularity of anti-aging products among teenagers is raising concerns among skin specialists worldwide.

Why are Teenagers Using Anti-Aging Products?

Social media platforms have transformed the beauty industry by making skincare trends accessible to younger audiences than ever before. Many teenagers regularly watch skincare routines, product reviews, and beauty recommendations shared by influencers. As a result, products originally designed for adults are increasingly finding their way into teenage skincare routines.

Experts believe that fear of future aging, pressure to achieve flawless skin, and aggressive marketing may contribute to this trend (1). Many teenagers are using products to prevent wrinkles that are unlikely to appear for decades. Social media is changing how young people think about skincare and aging.

Do Teenagers Need Anti-Aging Products?

Dermatologists generally agree that most teenagers do not need anti-ageing products designed for mature skin. Teenage skin naturally produces high levels of collagen and has strong regenerative abilities. In most cases, the focus should be on maintaining healthy skin rather than preventing wrinkles.

Experts recommend prioritizing cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection rather than complex anti-aging routines. Healthy skincare habits are often more important than anti-aging treatments during adolescence.

Can Retinol be Harmful for Teenage Skin?

Retinol has become one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients because of its ability to improve signs of aging and acne. While dermatologists may prescribe retinoids for certain skin conditions, over-the-counter anti-aging retinol products are often unnecessary for teenagers without specific concerns.

Improper use of retinoids may cause redness, irritation, dryness, peeling, and increased sensitivity (2). Young skin can be particularly vulnerable when multiple active ingredients are used together. Using powerful anti-ageing ingredients without medical guidance may do more harm than good.

What Skincare Ingredients should Teenagers be Careful about?

Besides retinol, dermatologists caution against excessive use of strong exfoliating acids, chemical peels, and multiple active ingredients layered together (3). Products marketed for wrinkle reduction may contain ingredients that are not appropriate for younger skin.

Experts encourage teenagers to avoid copying complex skincare routines seen online without understanding their purpose. Skin needs vary considerably between individuals, and what works for an adult influencer may not be suitable for a teenager.

What does Healthy Teenage Skincare Look like?

For most teenagers, a simple skincare routine is sufficient. Dermatologists commonly recommend a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer suitable for the individual’s skin type, and broad-spectrum sunscreen used daily. These basic steps help protect the skin while supporting its natural barrier function.

Sun protection is particularly important because ultraviolet radiation is one of the major contributors to premature skin aging (1). Daily sunscreen use may provide more long-term anti-aging benefits than many expensive skincare products.

How does Social Media Influence Skincare Decisions?

Social media can be a valuable source of information, but experts warn that not all skincare advice online is evidence-based. Influencers may recommend products without considering individual skin types, medical history, or potential side effects.

Dermatologists encourage young people and parents to evaluate skincare claims critically and seek professional guidance when needed. Skincare trends should not replace expert medical advice.

What this Means for Teenagerw

The rise of anti-aging skincare among teenagers reflects growing interest in beauty and self-care, but experts say younger consumers should approach trends cautiously. Most teenagers do not need products designed to treat wrinkles or age-related skin changes.

Instead, developing healthy skincare habits early in life may offer greater long-term benefits. A simple routine focused on cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection can help support healthy skin for years to come. Good skincare is not about using more products but about using the right products at the right age.

Frequently Asked Question

Which doctor should teenagers consult for skincare concerns?
Teenagers with skincare concerns should consult a dermatologist for personalized advice and treatment recommendations.

Do teenagers need anti-ageing skincare products?

Most teenagers do not need anti-ageing products because their skin naturally has high collagen levels and strong repair mechanisms.

Is retinol safe for teenagers?

Retinol may be appropriate for certain skin conditions under professional guidance, but many anti-ageing retinol products are unnecessary for teenagers.

What is the best skincare routine for teenagers?

A gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and daily sunscreen are often sufficient for most teenagers.

Can social media skincare trends be misleading?

Yes, some online skincare advice may not be evidence-based or suitable for every skin type.

Hand holding a glass roll on bottle with DIY Castor Oil Eye Serum

DIY Castor Oil Eye Serum Roll On

Castor oil is a powerhouse of a natural oil. I have posted about castor oil when it comes to it’s cleansing powers in oil cleansers and it’s hair growth abilities in hair serums but not until recently have I heard how beneficial it actually is for the skin in general. I’ve been seeing so many natural skin care companies selling an eye serum that contains only castor oil and frankincense essential oil so it’s intrigued me to do a little digging to find out why. I’m impressed with what I found and had to share. I think you’ll want to make yourself a DIY castor oil eye serum roll on ASAP!

This DIY eye serum will be the easiest one you’ll ever make. It may actually be the most effective as well. I made this serum for myself a week ago so I can’t speak on whether it has plumped me up under the eyes but I can say that it has thoroughly moisturized under my eyes and smoothed wrinkles. I even think it is reducing my under eye bags which is one of my biggest eye concerns. Let’s get right into why castor oil makes a great anti aging eye serum tool…

What is Castor Oil?

Castor oil is a vegetable oil derived from the castor bean. It contains ricinoleic, linoleic, stearic and oleic fatty acids which are all beneficial to the skin. These fatty acids have powerful anti-inflammatory properties as well as antimicrobial properties. Because it is both hydrophilic (water loving) and lipophilic (oil loving) it penetrates the skin better than most oils.

Castor oil has been known to actually stimulate the skin’s own collagen which is so easily lost around the eyes.

Castor oil is also non-comedogenic which means it will not clog pores.

Why You Should Use Castor Oil Under Your Eyes:

  • Reduces puffiness by encouraging lymphatic drainage.
  • Treats dark circles-There’s actually a PubMed study on this!
  • Reduces wrinkles-The same study linked above showed women seeing an improvement in wrinkles as well as dark circles.
  • Treats swollen eyes–According to a study, applying castor oil around the eyes including the eyelid reduced swelling caused by blepharitis (a condition that causes inflammation and swelling of the eyelids).
  • Provides deep nourishment thanks to it’s rich fatty acid profile.
  • May plump thin skin-I have heard many claims that castor oil plumps up the skin directly under the eyes were volume loss tends to occur with age due to less collagen production.
  • Conditions the lashes and brows and possible growth stimulation. If you haven’t tried my DIY lash serum and DIY brow serum you should. Skip store bought lash/brow enhancers-they have side effects you don’t want.

Why Add Frankincense?

Adding frankincense essential oil to this DIY eye serum is highly recommended. Frankincense is one of my favorite oils to use around the eyes. It helps regenerate cells and stimulates collagen. It also reduces inflammation and is a powerful antioxidant. Plus, it is one of the gentlest oils so using it around your eyes makes sense. It works well with all of castor oils attributes to really pack a punch!

Why Add Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and it’s great to add it to any and all oil based skincare products. It will neutralize free radical damage, lock in moisture and encourage cell renewal. Plus, it can help prolong the shelf life of your product.

Castor Oil & Frankincense DIY Eye Serum Recipe:

Direction:

  1. Add Frankincense to your roll on bottle.
  2. Add Vitamin E if you are using it.
  3. Top off the bottle with castor oil.

How to Use:

  1. Roll serum all around the eyes.
  2. Use at bedtime

Not All Castor Oils Are The Same:

You must look for castor 100% pure, organic and cold pressed. You want to look for the words “hexane free” and it should come in a glass bottle. There are many castor oils on the market that have cheap filler oils in them or are not sourced properly. Don’t waste your money and time. Be sure to get a good quality castor oil like THIS one.

This is an extremely easy DIY and you really have nothing to lose. Give it a try and report back and I’ll do the same!

lemon chicken marinade

Herb and Lemon Chicken Marinade

If you live in the US, chances are you eat around 118 pounds of chicken every single year. And while that’s the national average, chicken gets boring when it’s served the same old way. Try this lemon chicken marinade with herbs and garlic for a new way to enjoy a classic protein.

The acid from the lemon juice helps tenderize the chicken meat, while the herbs and spices give it a great flavor. Perfect for throwing on the grill for a warm summer night!

Lemon Chicken Marinade

Chicken is such a versatile (and affordable) protein and we use it frequently in our home. Everything from easy, Crockpot meals like salsa chicken to mouthwatering Italian chopped chicken salad. I especially love marinades because they infuse the flavor into the meat for even better taste.

This recipe calls for fresh herbs because I have a variety growing in the garden this time of year. Fresh herbs still have the volatile oils intact that give them a more intense flavor. These volatile oils are the same that you find when buying essential oils.

If you only have dried herbs though, not to worry! Dried herbs also work, you might just want to let the marinade soak into the meat a little longer. Another tip: keep fresh dried herbs on hand. This way when you pull the spice jar out of the pantry it’s still fragrant, not dusty and bland tasting. I also like to crush the dried herbs in my hand some right before using. This helps release some of those volatile oils (aka more flavor).

What Meat is Best to Use?

Ok, so technically this recipe is for lemon garlic chicken marinade, but it’s really for more than that. You can use it on any cut of chicken: wings, thighs, legs, or breast. But it’s also a tasty way to eat other meats. Our family also enjoys it on shrimp, salmon, pork chops, or even grilled vegetables.

How to Use the Lemon Chicken Marinade

Sometimes I’ll layer the meat in the bottom of a casserole dish and pour the marinade over that. Flip halfway through marinating. Or these reusable bags from ZipTop also work well too. You just want to make sure the marinade has close contact with the chicken so all the flavors can meld.

This is a great recipe to make ahead because the chicken can marinate for up to 24 hours. And the longer you wait, the better the flavor. That means throw it together and refrigerate on Friday for supper Saturday.

It’s great on the grill and helps the meat not dry out during cooking. It works just as well for pan-seared chicken or for baked lemon chicken in the oven. And if you want even more lemon flavor, serve with fresh lemon wedges. I’ll often add a sprinkle of chopped parsley for a color pop.

Herb and Lemon Chicken Marinade

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 TBSP lemon zest
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 TBSP fresh rosemary (chopped, or 1 tsp dried rosemary)
  • 1 TBSP fresh thyme (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
  • 2 TBSP fresh parsley (chopped, or 2 tsp dried parsley)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • In a bowl or mason jar, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, herbs, salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard if using.

  • Place the chicken in a glass container or reusable storage bag and pour the marinade over it. If your mixing bowl is big enough you can just put the chicken in there.

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.

  • Remove the chicken from the marinade and discard any remaining lemon chicken marinade.

  • Grill, bake, or pan-sear until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.

What to Eat With Lemon Chicken

There are so many fresh and fun side dishes. Whether you garden or get some from the local farmer’s market, colorful fruits and veggies are plentiful in the summer. And even if you’re not making this in the summer, it still pairs well with other sides.

Try a classic potato dish or a simple green salad for a quick meal. We also like it with grilled asparagus or sauteed summer squash. Here are some other ideas
