The Ultimate List of Mineral Benefits and How to Use Them

If you’ve hung around here for very long you probably know by now how much I love magnesium, sodium, and minerals in general. I noticed a huge difference in my health and energy levels after I prioritized minerals. And I’ve heard from many of you how minerals have changed your health too.

This roundup post is a collection of all of the articles and podcast episodes I’ve done over the past 15 years on mineral benefits. They cover what they are, why we need them, side effects of not getting enough, and how to optimize mineral levels. This is your one stop resource guide and reference when it comes to everything minerals on Wellness Mama.

First up, magnesium and sodium!

Magnesium and Sodium Benefits

Magnesium is one of my favorite things to talk about, but salt is probably a close second. Most of us are deficient in magnesium due to conventional farming practices and modern life. Things like stress, especially chronic low-grade stress, depletes minerals like magnesium. Sugar is another big culprit for magnesium depletion.

Sodium is another really important mineral for hydration, energy, brain health, and so much more. Unfortunately it’s been demonized in the past several decades. Real salt has been largely replaced by refined salt in highly processed foods.

Even people with certain health issues, like high blood pressure, can still benefit from more salt. Be sure to check with a natural healthcare practitioner before adding more salt, but there’s some really good info here and from podcast guests below on salt’s benefits.

Fulvic and Humic Acids

While these aren’t technically electrolytes I’ve still grouped them in this article because they provide trace minerals. Many years ago these substances were naturally rich in our soil after plants decomposed and microbes transformed them. They naturally have trace minerals, amino acids, organic acids, carbon complexes, and unique compounds we don’t find in modern food.

They’re the conductors and transporters that help our system work better. I like to think of fulvic and humic acids as the translator between the food we eat and our cells. Like the spark plugs for nutrient absorption. The following articles tell about their benefits, how I use them, and how to get them.

DIY Magnesium and Salt Recipes

We’re circling back to magnesium and sodium in this section. While there’s a lot of information on the health benefits of these electrolytes in these articles, it focuses more on the practical. You’ll find recipes for bath salts, detox baths, topical magnesium, scrubs, and more.

Using sodium and magnesium topically is a great way to get more of their benefits! Plus it’s a relaxing way to pamper yourself a little. Sometimes I’ll make these for myself and my girls. And I’ll often make extra to give to family and friends as gifts.

Mineral Rich Recipes to Eat

Technically any of the nutrient dense recipes on my site made with whole foods have some minerals in them. Since modern food (even organic) is so much lower in nutrients and minerals than even a hundred years ago, I like to take a targeted approach.

Yes, I supplement as needed, but I like making mineral rich recipes as well. They’re delicious and the kids love them too!

Mineral Mastery Article Series

I love talking about minerals so much that I did a whole dedicated series on them. This series in particular focuses on how minerals support cellular health and energy. Magnesium, potassium, and sodium work together to fuel every cell in the body. This is why when we don’t have enough the side effects can be so wide ranging.

Mineral Mastery Podcast Series

In addition to the above articles (which are more of the Cliff Notes version), I recorded a whole mineral podcast series. These go into more depth and dig deeper into the science and practical uses of minerals.

I cover the big three: sodium, magnesium, and potassium. Then I go into fulvic and humic acids benefits for cell health. And finally the series wraps up with an overview of how they all work together and why we need optimal levels of all of them.

Podcasts About Minerals

Some of my favorite podcast recordings over the years have been on the topic of minerals. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some of the top experts in these fields and I’ve learned so much from them. These podcasts delve into the benefits of different minerals, how they work in the body, and how to optimize your levels.

I love listening to podcasts while I’m in the sauna or cleaning and they’re also great during long car trips too!

More cruise lines bring modern wellness services to sea

The cruise ship spa has come a long way from a basic massage and salon experience that adds a bit of pampering to a vacation at sea. Modern cruise ship spas have evolved into comprehensive wellness destinations that invite passengers to relax, recharge, and renew in holistic and high-tech ways.

Wellness tourism is one of the fast-growing segments of the booming global wellness economy, according to the Global Wellness Institute. That creates a major opportunity for cruise lines to cater their spa offerings to travelers who want to make wellness experiences a bigger part of their vacation.

As travelers increasingly prioritize self-care alongside sightseeing, mainstream cruise lines are responding with treatment menus that read more like a luxury wellness clinic than a traditional day spa.

Today’s cruise ship spas not only feature relaxing thermal suites with saunas, steam rooms, and vitality pools, their offerings go far beyond massages and facials to include advanced beauty treatments and medical wellness services.

On more and more mainstream cruise lines, spas are turning into floating med spas, where passengers can book a Botox touch-up before dinner, recover from jet lag with an IV vitamin infusion, or get vacation-ready permanent makeup — all without leaving the ship.

For passengers cruising to the Caribbean, the new med spa offerings mean a chance to return from a cruise not just tanned and rested, but visibly refreshed.

fizzy toilet tablets

Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner Tablets

I accidentally discovered this recipe for DIY toilet bowl cleaner tablets thanks to one of my children. Anyone else have kids who throw everything in the toilet?? And while it might have been unintentional, this happy accident has saved me a whole lot of scrubbing over the years.

How I (Accidentally) Discovered DIY Toilet Cleaning Tablets

Once upon a time, I made a giant batch of my regular sea salt bath fizzies and postpartum bath fizzies. I had some friends expecting babies and wanted to give them as gifts.

I kept a few of the broken ones when I removed them from the molds and was planning to use them myself. I had them in a bag by my bathtub and my then one year old got into them (in true one-year old fashion). She was going through a phase of putting everything in the toilet, and these were no exception.

My first reaction was to stifle my annoyance for yet another thing being thrown in the toilet. And then I was angry that I wouldn’t get to use the bath fizzies myself.

I didn’t want to flush the toilet until they finished fizzing since I wasn’t sure that would be good for the pipes. As I stood there watching them fizz and mourning the loss of my relaxing bath, I noticed that the toilet seemed to be getting cleaner as they fizzed.

I used the toilet brush to make sure they had all dissolved and when I flushed the toilet, I was shocked how clean it was. I realized that the bath fizzies had a lot of ingredients that were naturally detoxing, and that these ingredients also worked great for detoxing and cleaning toilettes.

An Effective Toilet Bowl Cleaner

I played with the recipe to make it a little more potent since it doesn’t need to be gentle enough for skin. The result is an inexpensive, easy-to-make, highly effective toilet cleaning tablet. The best part? The little kids loved using these because they’re fun, so my toilets were cleaned frequently.

These toilet bowl cleaner tablets freshen the bathroom and leave the toilet sparkling. I store them in an air-tight glass jar in the bathroom and use them as needed. I’ve found that if stored correctly, they keep for months.

Baking soda is great for gently scrubbing messes and deodorizing. Citric acid is naturally found in citrus fruits and helps dissolve mineral deposits. Together, they make an effective, natural toilet bowl cleaner.

And while I don’t make homemade cleaners as much anymore now that I’ve found healthy versions, I still enjoy pulling them out on occasion.

Natural Toilet Cleaning

If you’re still using the “call poison control if you drink, inhale or look at this wrong” type cleaners, try these instead. All of the ingredients are food grade and can technically be used in cooking. Though I definitely wouldn’t eat them because of the concentration of baking soda and citric acid.

I give some more toilet (and bathroom) cleaning options in this post. And if you don’t feel like DIYing it, there are some really good pre-made options now. One of my favorite natural cleaners, Branch Basics, also works for toilet bowls. And you can add some of their Oxygen Boost powder if you need something a little stronger.

Note: I haven’t tried flushing the toilet before this has fully dissolved, but I wouldn’t suggest trying it. I’m thinking that kind of pressure in pipes isn’t the best idea! The toilet bowl cleaner tablet also needs a little time to work and clean the bowl.

These are not the kind of toilet tablets that go in the toilet tank, in case you were wondering. They go directly into the bowl to clean as needed.

Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner Tablets Recipe

Make natural toilet cleaner using food grade ingredients such as baking soda, citric acid, and essential oils.

Prep Time15 minutes

Drying Time8 hours

Total Time8 hours 15 minutes

Yield: 40 toilet tablets

Author: Katie Wells

  • In a glass bowl, mix together the baking soda and citric acid in a glass bowl. I suggest wearing a mask and some latex gloves for this to protect your skin and eyes.

  • Slowly mist the dry powder with water, mixing as you go. You want to barely wet the powder to get it to stick together in the mold. I used a small, fine mist spray bottle and about 8 sprays. Too much will cause fizzing.

  • Add the essential oils and continue mixing.

  • Using a 1 teaspoon measure (or larger), scoop out spoonfuls and place them on a piece of parchment paper until dry. You could also use a silicone mold for this step.

  • Let the toilet tablets dry overnight and carefully place in an airtight container to use as needed.

  • I haven’t tried flushing the toilet before this has fully dissolved, but I would not suggest trying it (I’m thinking that kind of pressure in pipes isn’t the best idea!)
  • I usually use a 1 teaspoon measuring spoon for these, but I’ve also used a 1/2 Tablespoon. You’ll get fewer toilet tablets, but stronger cleaning power with a bigger scoop.

Tips For Making Toilet Bowl Cleaner Tablets

The number one mistake people make with bath bombs and similar recipes like this is adding too much water. The mixture should feel like damp sand when you squish it together. Too much water will cause the citric acid to prematurely react and fizz.

I use water, but some people use a mix of alcohol and water. The alcohol adds some moisture to help the powders stick together, without making it too wet. If it’s a really humid day or you live in an area with more moist air it can also affect the recipe.

If your toilet bowl tablets break apart after drying, the pieces still work for cleaning!
