The Ultimate Christmas in July Gift Guide

The Ultimate Christmas in July Gift Guide

If you’re anything like me, you know that the best handmade gifts can’t always be made at the last minute. Some projects—like cold process soap—need weeks to cure, while others simply take time to gather supplies, create, and package with care. That’s exactly why I love celebrating Christmas in July. It’s the perfect excuse to start planning for a handmade holiday without the stress of a December rush.

Over the years, we’ve hosted some unforgettable Christmas in July gatherings, complete with hilarious White Elephant exchanges that have become family legends. (Yes, the giant Christmas sweater and that infamous pair of underwear made the rounds for years!) Those memories are part of what makes this tradition so much fun.

Whether you’re planning your own Christmas in July celebration or you’re simply someone who likes to get a head start on holiday gift-making, this guide is filled with ideas to inspire you.

Inside, you’ll find handmade gift ideas, natural products I genuinely love, trusted companies I enjoy supporting, and time-tested DIY recipes that are perfect for gifting. I’ve also included a few special splurge-worthy finds if you’re looking to treat someone—or yourself—to something extra special.

From healthy ingredients and beautiful handcrafted products to DIY gifts you can start making today, there’s something here for every maker and every gift list.

Now, let’s dive in and start planning a handmade holiday you’ll actually enjoy creating.

1. Gold Jewelry for Gifting

I actually love the combination of handmade with something polished. It’s an earthy, yet elegant look that’s natural and classy at the same time. Whether it’s a delicate necklace, a pair of simple earrings, or a meaningful bracelet, jewelry has a way of becoming part of someone’s everyday life and become even more special if they are high-quality pieces that are passed down from generation to generation.

If you’re looking for a gift that feels both elegant and personal, this gold jewelry is a wonderful choice. It’s perfect for moms, sisters, friends, teachers, or anyone who appreciates classic style that will last for years to come.

2. Handmade Holiday Soap Recipes

Homemade soap is one of my favorite gifts to make because it’s both beautiful and practical. The only catch is that many cold process soaps need four to six weeks to cure, making Christmas in July the perfect time to start creating.

Whether you love festive scents, herbal ingredients, or naturally colored bars, making soap ahead of time means you’ll have plenty of gorgeous gifts ready when the holidays arrive. Package them with ribbon, kraft paper, or a handmade label for an extra special touch. You can also try some from my shop now.

3. Luxurious Lotion for Gifts

A rich, nourishing lotion is always a welcome gift during the colder months. Homemade lotions made with quality oils and butters feel incredibly luxurious while giving friends and family something they’ll actually use every day.

From lightweight lotions to rich body creams, there are plenty of recipes to suit every skin type. Pair a handmade lotion with coordinating soap or lip balm to create a beautiful spa-inspired gift set. Make your own with my recipes or get some from my shop.

4. Handmade Soap for Men

Finding thoughtful gifts for the men in your life doesn’t have to be difficult. Handmade soaps with earthy, woodsy, citrus, or spicy scents make practical gifts that feel just a little more special than anything you’ll find on a store shelf.

These soaps are perfect for husbands, dads, brothers, grandfathers, or coworkers. Add them to a gift basket with a shaving brush, beard oil, or handcrafted wooden soap dish for a gift that’s both useful and memorable.

5. Herbal Lip Balm Recipes

Lip balm is one of those small gifts that everyone appreciates. They’re inexpensive to make, easy to customize, and perfect for stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, party favors, or adding to larger gift baskets.

Using nourishing oils, beeswax, and herbal infusions creates lip balms that feel wonderful while avoiding unnecessary ingredients. Once you start making your own, you’ll probably find yourself keeping a few extras for your own purse or pocket, too.

6. Facial and Body Scrubs

Sugar and salt scrubs make wonderful homemade gifts because they’re quick to create and instantly feel like a little luxury. They’re perfect for encouraging a little self-care during the busy holiday season.

From gentle facial scrubs to exfoliating body scrubs scented with essential oils, there are endless ways to customize them. Package them in reusable glass jars with festive labels, and you’ll have a gift that’s both beautiful and practical.

7. Homemade Candles

Few things create a cozy holiday atmosphere quite like a beautiful, naturally scented candle. Making your own allows you to choose natural waxes, favorite fragrances, and containers that match your personal style.

Candles make wonderful standalone gifts or can be paired with soap, lotion, tea, or a favorite book for a thoughtful gift basket. They’re one of those handmade gifts that people enjoy long after the holidays are over.

8. Diffuser Oil Blends

Essential oil diffuser blends are a simple way to fill a home with comforting seasonal aromas. Whether you enjoy warm spices, fresh evergreens, bright citrus, or calming lavender, creating custom blends lets you personalize every gift.

Bottle your favorite combinations in small glass bottles with handwritten labels or include printable blend recipes alongside a diffuser. They’re thoughtful gifts for anyone who enjoys creating a peaceful, welcoming home.

9. Homemade Herbal Teas

There’s something comforting about curling up with a warm cup of herbal tea on a cold winter evening. Homemade tea blends are easy to customize using dried herbs, flowers, and spices, making them a thoughtful gift for friends and family.

Package loose-leaf blends in glass jars, reusable tea tins, or kraft bags with brewing instructions and a handwritten note. Pair them with a favorite mug, local honey, or homemade cookies for a cozy gift that’s sure to be appreciated throughout the season.

Gift Baskets

If you’re wondering how to put these all together, then consider making a few different categories and making a gift basket. Gift baskets are incredibly popular around the holidays because they let you combine several small handmade items into one thoughtful gift.

There are many times throughout the year to create gift baskets. Some great ideas include:

  • New neighbor welcome basket
  • Spa gift basket (soap, lotion, lip balm, scrub, candle)
  • Tea lover’s basket (herbal tea, mug, honey, candle)
  • Men’s grooming basket
  • Hostess gift basket

Make all of your gifts or find Handmade Gifts in my Shop.

Handmade Gift Packaging Ideas

Presentation makes handmade gifts feel even more special.

Include ideas like:

  • Kraft boxes
  • Mason jars
  • Muslin bags
  • Twine and dried orange slices
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Handmade gift tags
  • Wax seals
  • Reusable baskets

mineral benefits

The Ultimate List of Mineral Benefits and How to Use Them

If you’ve hung around here for very long you probably know by now how much I love magnesium, sodium, and minerals in general. I noticed a huge difference in my health and energy levels after I prioritized minerals. And I’ve heard from many of you how minerals have changed your health too.

This roundup post is a collection of all of the articles and podcast episodes I’ve done over the past 15 years on mineral benefits. They cover what they are, why we need them, side effects of not getting enough, and how to optimize mineral levels. This is your one stop resource guide and reference when it comes to everything minerals on Wellness Mama.

First up, magnesium and sodium!

Magnesium and Sodium Benefits

Magnesium is one of my favorite things to talk about, but salt is probably a close second. Most of us are deficient in magnesium due to conventional farming practices and modern life. Things like stress, especially chronic low-grade stress, depletes minerals like magnesium. Sugar is another big culprit for magnesium depletion.

Sodium is another really important mineral for hydration, energy, brain health, and so much more. Unfortunately it’s been demonized in the past several decades. Real salt has been largely replaced by refined salt in highly processed foods.

Even people with certain health issues, like high blood pressure, can still benefit from more salt. Be sure to check with a natural healthcare practitioner before adding more salt, but there’s some really good info here and from podcast guests below on salt’s benefits.

Fulvic and Humic Acids

While these aren’t technically electrolytes I’ve still grouped them in this article because they provide trace minerals. Many years ago these substances were naturally rich in our soil after plants decomposed and microbes transformed them. They naturally have trace minerals, amino acids, organic acids, carbon complexes, and unique compounds we don’t find in modern food.

They’re the conductors and transporters that help our system work better. I like to think of fulvic and humic acids as the translator between the food we eat and our cells. Like the spark plugs for nutrient absorption. The following articles tell about their benefits, how I use them, and how to get them.

DIY Magnesium and Salt Recipes

We’re circling back to magnesium and sodium in this section. While there’s a lot of information on the health benefits of these electrolytes in these articles, it focuses more on the practical. You’ll find recipes for bath salts, detox baths, topical magnesium, scrubs, and more.

Using sodium and magnesium topically is a great way to get more of their benefits! Plus it’s a relaxing way to pamper yourself a little. Sometimes I’ll make these for myself and my girls. And I’ll often make extra to give to family and friends as gifts.

Mineral Rich Recipes to Eat

Technically any of the nutrient dense recipes on my site made with whole foods have some minerals in them. Since modern food (even organic) is so much lower in nutrients and minerals than even a hundred years ago, I like to take a targeted approach.

Yes, I supplement as needed, but I like making mineral rich recipes as well. They’re delicious and the kids love them too!

Mineral Mastery Article Series

I love talking about minerals so much that I did a whole dedicated series on them. This series in particular focuses on how minerals support cellular health and energy. Magnesium, potassium, and sodium work together to fuel every cell in the body. This is why when we don’t have enough the side effects can be so wide ranging.

Mineral Mastery Podcast Series

In addition to the above articles (which are more of the Cliff Notes version), I recorded a whole mineral podcast series. These go into more depth and dig deeper into the science and practical uses of minerals.

I cover the big three: sodium, magnesium, and potassium. Then I go into fulvic and humic acids benefits for cell health. And finally the series wraps up with an overview of how they all work together and why we need optimal levels of all of them.

Podcasts About Minerals

Some of my favorite podcast recordings over the years have been on the topic of minerals. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some of the top experts in these fields and I’ve learned so much from them. These podcasts delve into the benefits of different minerals, how they work in the body, and how to optimize your levels.

I love listening to podcasts while I’m in the sauna or cleaning and they’re also great during long car trips too!

natural oral care

The Ultimate Roundup For Naturally Healthy Teeth

I’ve been getting on my soapbox about mouth health for over 15 years now. I’ve interviewed some fascinating oral health experts on the podcast and written tons of articles. This is the ultimate roundup list of everything you need to know about natural oral care!

Our mouth health is about more than just a nice set of pearly whites. It’s an important indicator of overall health. When our body isn’t doing well, it shows up in our smiles. Sore and inflamed gums, yellow or loose teeth, bad breath… these all point to other health issues as a root cause.

I’ve arranged the following information by groups so you can more easily find what your looking for. Think of it as a natural oral health directory. You’ll find everything from natural toothpaste recipes to how to remineralize teeth to my exact oral care routines. Plus, plenty of expert interviews with dentists and other health experts.

Here’s a roundup of all of my oral care recipes, articles, and podcast episodes for easy reference.

Thoughts on Conventional Dental and Oral Care

Until I got older I never thought to question conventional oral care. I used fluoride toothpaste and went to the dentist twice yearly for a cleaning. After learning about natural mouth health, I started questioning how things were done. Here are some of my thoughts and the research behind conventional dentistry.

Remineralizing Teeth

After making some changes to my oral care routine and diet, I noticed some big changes in my mouth health. Here’s what I discovered along the way and what’s worked.

Oral Care Routines

A lot of people ask me what I do exactly or recommend when it comes to natural oral care. Here are the routines I’ve used and a breakdown of why each part is important.

Oral Care Ingredients

I’ve already covered some of this above, but here’s some more information on specific ingredients in store-bought and my homemade oral care products.

Toothpaste and Oral Recipes

I like to rotate which products and ingredients I use for maximal health. Lately I’ve been reaching for premade toothpaste because there are some really good ones now. And with everything going on in life, sometimes that’s the simplest thing. If you want to make your own, here’s what’s worked for me in the past to remineralize teeth and have a healthy mouth.

Teeth Whitening

You can skip the whitening strips with these easy DIY solutions. In general, strengthening teeth and eating nutrient dense foods make teeth whiter. However, these are good for an extra boost to naturally remove stains.

Oil Pulling

Information on oil pulling and how to do it. It can help whiten teeth (see above) and reduce plaque. My dentist certainly noticed a difference after I started regularly oil pulling!

Podcasts on Natural Oral Care

This mix of solo episodes and expert interviews isn’t in any particular order. It goes beyond conventional dental care and sheds a light on topics like diet, sunlight’s role, what mouth bacteria really mean, and more. I’ve found that they offer some surprising and deep truths!

What are some ways you naturally care for your teeth and oral health? Leave a comment and share below!

London’s Best Celebrity Facialists: The Ultimate Guide to Glowing Skin in 2026

City life is no friend to the complexion. Pollution, stress, broken sleep, central heating all take their toll. London gives a lot, but your skin quietly keeps the receipts.

The results extend beyond the skin, delivering a noticeable sense of calm alongside a brighter, more luminous complexion.

Treatments from £120 for 30 minutes.

What to Look for When Booking a Facial in London

With so many options available, choosing the right facialist requires a considered approach. It is always worth checking whether a consultation is offered before treatment, as the best practitioners will assess your skin in detail before recommending anything.

If you have specific concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, sensitivity or rosacea, look for a specialist with proven experience in that area. Waiting lists should not be seen as a drawback. In many cases, they are a strong indicator of quality and demand.

A beige backdrop with a model with glowing skin and curly dark hair and a bottle of beauty of joseon toner and glowery oil cleanser

A derm just revealed the ultimate 12-step skincare routine

Would you carry out 12 skincare steps every day? Asking for a friend. A doctor friend, no less, who has just released the ultimate “structured, doctor-led approach to adult skincare”.

It’s not as complex as it sounds. It’s six steps in the morning and six at night – some of which are the same (your best cleanser will make an appearance more than once) And as the expert behind it all, Consultant Dermatologist at The Devonshire Clinic, Dr Conal Perrett, explains, many of us are using lots of products already, but not in the most effective way.

“In reality, many people are investing consistently but not seeing meaningful change because they’re stopping short of the treatments that can make a real difference,” said Dr Perrett, after analysing YouGov’s 2026 Anti-Ageing report. And, happily, he went on to detail a step-by-step breakdown of everything we should be doing to get results.

The most effective skincare routine, according to a dermatologist

YouGov’s study contains so many interesting insights. The part that caught Dr Perrett’s eye was that 60% of UK adults are regularly buying skincare products, but the vast majority never use powerful actives. And so he has helpfully aimed to get us past this hurdle by outlining his optimum 12-step daily regimen, “aimed at supporting skin health, barrier function and anti-ageing outcomes more effectively.” Et voila:

  • Morning routine
  • Cleanser: Removes sweat, oil, bacteria and overnight products, creating a clean base for active ingredients.
  • Toner: Modern formulas hydrate, rebalance pH or deliver light active ingredients.
  • Treatment serums: Target concerns such as hydration, pigmentation or oil control; apply from thinnest to thickest texture.
  • Eye cream: Supports hydration in the delicate under-eye area.
  • Moisturiser: Locks in hydration and supports the skin barrier.
  • Suncream: Protects against UV damage, which accounts for up to 80–90% of visible skin ageing; SPF 30+ recommended daily, even on cloudy days.
  • Evening routine
  • Cleanser: Double cleansing may help remove SPF, makeup, and impurities.
  • Toner: Hydrating or lightly exfoliating, depending on skin type.
  • Treatment products: Retinol, AHAs/BHAs or prescribed actives, often used at night due to increased sun sensitivity.
  • Hydrating serum: Helps minimise irritation and support skin recovery.
  • Moisturiser: Seals in treatments and prevents dryness.
  • Facial oil: Applied last to lock in moisture and actives.

Our beauty editor’s evening picks

PM cleanse

Glowery

Honey Glow Dewy Face Wash

An oil-based cleanser is a good idea in the evenings, as it’ll cut through makeup, SPF and daily grime like a dream. This has an oil-balm texture that leaves skin feeling soft and clean but never dry.

Glow-inducing AHA

This effective toner contains super AHA Glycolic acid to exfoliate dead cells and help bring glow back to dry or textured skin. Instead of using it every evening, I’d suggest going night-on, night-off with your treatment step, which is…

Powerful retinal

Medik8

Crystal Retinal 1 Serum

Retinoids are the most effective ingredients for reversing skin damage. Retinals like this go through fewer conversions in the skin to become retinoid acid, so should get to work faster and all but the most sensitive skins should give this a go.

Plush PM cream

Nip+Fab

Ceramide Fix Overnight Repair Cream 12%

Use something richer and packed with skin cushioning ceramides after all those nighttime actives. This has a creamy, plush texture and skin is still noticeably protected and conditioned in the morning.

Hydrate and plump

L’Oreal

Paris Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid Anti-Wrinkle Serum

Hyaluronic acid is your friend here, a molecule that draws water into the skin and keeps it there for hydration, comfort and a plump, bouncy feel. This L’Oreal serum offers cutting edge technology at an affordable price.

Active-packed oil

Trilogy

Certified Organic Rosehip Oil

Not everyone loves the feeling of an oil, but if you have skin that’s become dryer with age this one is well worth a try. It’s perfectly nourishing and comforting without feeling greasy, is packed with antioxidants and it’s reportedly Kate Middleton’s rosehip oil of choice, too.

While 12 steps sounds like a lot, some of these can be combined or swapped around. For example, you can opt to use the same cleanser day and night – and the best toner for your skin may be the same formula in the morning and evening too – the same goes for your best facial moisturiser.

Stronger actives such as alpha hydroxy acids and retinoids work well when swapped in and out night by night, and more skin-type-specific products, such as an oil, can be added in, or not, at your discretion. As with anything to do with skincare, there’s nuance in the conversation.

But with so much skincare noise out there, it is a gift to have this clear, Dr-approved list, designed for pure efficacy, and broken down in steps. As Dr Perrett says himself, “Patients today don’t want dramatic changes. They want to look like a fresher version of themselves. The trend is moving towards natural, preventative approaches, but education is key. Closing this gap is about giving people clear, medically-led guidance so they can make informed decisions, rather than relying on trial and error with products alone.”

Ultimate South African Self-Care Guide

Ultimate South African Self-Care Guide

Life in South Africa can be a beautiful whirlwind. From the bustling streets of Johannesburg to the calm seaside towns of the Western Cape, our days are filled with work, family, and the constant buzz of modern life. But amid all this energy, taking care of yourself — truly caring for your mind, body, and soul, often gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and scented candles (though we love those too). In South Africa, self-care is about blending modern wellness habits with local traditions and nature’s healing power. Here’s your ultimate guide to self-care, South African style.

1. Understanding Self-Care in South Africa

Self-care is personal. It’s the daily choices that help you feel centred, healthy, and happy. In South Africa, it also has a cultural dimension — drawing from traditions, nature, and community. Think sipping a calming Rooibos tea while listening to a live mbaqanga performance, or taking a weekend hike up Table Mountain to reconnect with yourself.

Local wellness practices, like herbal remedies (umhlonyane for stress relief) or visiting traditional healers (sangomas), can be incorporated alongside modern routines like yoga, meditation, or journaling.

2. Daily Self-Care Habits That Work

Self-care doesn’t have to take hours. Even small, intentional habits can make a big difference:

Morning Rituals:
Start your day with a calming routine. Brew a cup of Rooibos tea from the Cederberg region, practise mindfulness for five minutes, or jot down a gratitude list. If you’re in Cape Town, a sunrise walk along Sea Point promenade is pure magic.

Physical Wellness:
Exercise is a cornerstone of self-care. Whether it’s cycling in Johannesburg’s parks, hiking the Drakensberg, or surfing in Durban, moving your body in nature is restorative. Even a brisk walk around your neighbourhood can help reset your mind.

Mindful Eating:
Eat local, seasonal foods. Fresh fruits from a nearby farmers’ market, a wholesome bobotie for lunch, or a smoothie with indigenous ingredients like baobab powder can nourish both body and soul. Remember, self-care is also about enjoying your food without guilt.

3. Weekend Wellness Rituals

Weekends are prime time to recharge fully:

  • Spa Days: Treat yourself at a Cape Town spa or a boutique retreat in Stellenbosch. Hot stone massages or traditional treatments can work wonders for stress relief.
  • Nature Retreats: Head to the Drakensberg or the Lowveld for a weekend digital detox. Hiking, meditating, or simply listening to the wind through the trees reconnects you with yourself.
  • Cultural Self-Care: Engage with your community. Attend a local music festival, art workshop, or storytelling circle. Celebrating local culture is a joyful way to nourish your spirit.

4. Mental Health and Community

Self-care isn’t just about what you do alone; it’s about the people and support around you. South Africa has a growing wellness and mental health scene. Apps like Mindful Gnani or local therapists provide guidance if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Balancing work, family, and social life is key. Don’t hesitate to say no when needed, and prioritise “you time” guilt-free. Even a 10-minute meditation before bed counts.

5. Quick Self-Care Tips for Urban Life

Life in cities like Johannesburg, Durban, or Pretoria can be hectic. Here are simple ways to weave self-care into your routine:

  • Take coffee breaks at local cafés like Father Coffee in Joburg or Truth Coffee in Cape Town.
  • Stretch during office hours or do a short guided yoga session online.
  • Explore nearby nature reserves for a weekend escape — think Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens or Kloof Gorge.
  • Incorporate South African music into your day — whether it’s amapiano, kwaito, or jazz — for a quick mood boost.

Make Self-Care a South African Lifestyle

Self-care is more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle. The beauty of South Africa is that we have a unique mix of modern wellness resources and natural, cultural practices to draw from. Whether it’s a morning Rooibos ritual, a hike up Table Mountain, or a weekend spa retreat, the key is intentionality.

Start small. Choose one ritual today — a sunset walk at the V&A Waterfront, five minutes of meditation, or a calming herbal tea — and make it yours. With consistent self-care, your mind, body, and soul will thank you, South African style.

The Ultimate 5-Minute ‘No-Makeup’ Makeup Routine You’ll Love | Beauty News

The Ultimate 5-Minute ‘No-Makeup’ Makeup Routine You’ll Love | Beauty News

Last Updated:February 17, 2026, 13:45 IST

Want radiant skin without heavy foundation? Try this easy no-makeup makeup routine with light coverage, blush hacks and glow tips for an effortless everyday look.

This makeup hack will make you look glowy, fresh, and pretty!

Do you ever find yourself scrolling through the Internet and spotting videos of actresses looking effortlessly flawless, seemingly with barely any makeup on? Same here. The ‘no-makeup makeup’ look has been trending for a while, but let’s be real, it’s not as easy to pull off as it sounds, even though, technically, it’s supposed to be a ‘no-makeup’ look.

So, if you are wondering how to achieve that effortless, fresh-faced glow in just a few minutes, you are in the right place. Before we get into the simple steps to nail it, let’s first understand what the no-makeup makeup look actually is.

What Is A ‘No Makeup’ Makeup Look And Why Is It Trending?

The no-makeup look is all about enhancing your natural features using minimal products. It focuses on lightweight, breathable formulas that let your skin shine through while still making you look fresh and put together.

What makes this look so appealing, and why it’s been trending, is its connection to the skincare-first mindset that emerged during COVID. People started prioritising healthy, well-cared-for skin, which naturally led to a preference for sheer foundations, dewy highlighters, and barely-there lip and cheek tints. These subtle products allow the skin, already perfected by a consistent skincare routine, to take centre stage.

How To Nail The ‘No Makeup’ Makeup Look In Just 5 Minutes

1. Skin Prep, Always

When your skin is well prepped, you automatically need less coverage. It is not always necessary to follow a long, multi-step skincare routine. A good SPF moisturiser or even a strobe cream can work wonders on its own. These products create a smooth, hydrated base, allowing your makeup to glide on effortlessly while still keeping the skin looking fresh and breathable.

2. Full Face Foundation? No Need

You can skip the full-coverage foundation and go for spot concealing or a lightweight skin tint instead, and apply it with your fingers for a more natural finish. Use concealer only where needed, like the inner corners of your eyes, around the nose, or on any blemishes.

3. Blush Being The Gamechanger

To add a natural flush, use a cream blush in a soft pink that suits your skin tone. Dab it onto the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards. You can also try the trending boyfriend blush by placing it slightly lower on the cheeks. At last, whatever blush is left on your fingers, lightly tap it onto your eyelids for a natural finish.

4. Don’t Forget Brows And Lashes

Do not forget your brows and lashes, but keep them soft and natural, not overly perfect. A tinted brow gel works great to add shape and fullness, and a light coat of brown mascara on the lashes is enough to open up your eyes without looking heavy.

5. Bringing It All Together

Finish off your look with a lip balm or a nourishing lip oil for a healthy shine. You can also lightly dust some bronzer in a soft ‘W’ shape across your cheeks and nose to add a natural, sun-kissed glow.

The Ultimate Summer Skincare Routine For 2026

The Ultimate Summer Skincare Routine For 2026

Summer 2026 is a challenge with temperatures reaching new highs every year. Add increasing pollution to it, and your skin problems may get worse. Your skin has to work extra to stay balanced. It is a daily struggle for many to experience oiliness by noon, but dryness and tightness beneath the surface.

Splashing water on your face could have fixed the problem earlier. You need a reliable layering of products to address the skin concerns now. However, that does not mean getting twenty different bottles for each problem. Just a few hardworking products like a detan face mask and Vitamin C serum can do the job of protecting your skin when you are out and take care of the damage after you come home.

Here is a step-by-step guide to maintain clear skin all season long.

Morning Skincare Routine: Protect & Prevent

The morning is your time to build a shield. You want to stay fresh and keep the sun from doing its worst damage.

Step 1: Body Wash During Bath Time

A summer day starts with a clean base. Your body accumulates sweat and old skin cells overnight, which can lead to clogged pores and body breakouts.

  • The Goal: Use a gentle and refreshing body wash to wake up your skin.
  • Skin Tip: Look for a moisturising wash if your skin feels parched. If you are prone to back acne, a clarifying formula will keep things clear.

Step 2: Face Wash for a Fresh Start

You are likely to wake up with a layer of oil, even if you washed your face before bed. Skipping this step can lead to trapped bacteria and breakouts in hot weather.

  • Oily Skin: Go for a gel-based cleanser to cut through the shine.
  • Dry/Sensitive Skin: A creamy or hydrating wash will clean your face without making it feel like sandpaper.

Step 3: Scrub (2–3 Times a Week)

Exfoliation has a lot of benefits, but not when you overdo it. Scrubbing every single day during summer is a mistake, as it can make your skin way too sensitive to the sun.

  • The Timing: Stick to 2–3 times a week.
  • Benefits: It clears away dead skin and keeps your tan from looking patchy.

Pro Tip: Always follow with applying plenty of sunscreen if you exfoliate in the morning.

Step 4: Face Sunscreen SPF 50 – The Big One

If you only do one thing, make it count. SPF 50 is the bare minimum for an Indian summer. It is the only defence against tanning, dark spots, and ageing.

  • The Rules: Use the “two-finger rule” for your face and neck. Apply it 20 minutes before you head out and reapply every few hours if you are outdoors.
  • Important: Do not skip sunscreen if you are using a Vitamin C serum or any active treatment.

Step 5: Face Moisturiser to Lock it In

Many people skip this because they are afraid of feeling greasy, but heat can dehydrate your skin. A lightweight and water-gel moisturiser will keep your skin from overproducing oil and allow your sunscreen to sit smoothly.

Evening Skincare Routine: Cleanse & Repair

When the sun goes down, it is time to let your skin breathe and recover.

Step 1: Wash Away the Day

Sunscreen is designed to stay on, which means it does not just come off with water. Use a good face wash to remove the impurities, SPF, sweat, and pollution that have been sitting on your face all day.

Step 2: Repair with Serums

Nighttime is the best time for your skin to heal. This is when you should apply a Vitamin C serum.

  • Benefits: It repairs sun stress, improves your skin texture, and brightens up any dullness.

Step 3: Nighttime Moisturiser

Seal everything in with a moisturiser. You can also use a richer cream at night since you won’t be sweating under the sun. It will help your skin barrier repair itself while you sleep.

Exfoliation Routine: The Summer Reset

Think of exfoliation as your weekly deep-clean.

Body Exfoliation

Use a body scrub twice a week during your shower. It’s the best way to keep your elbows and knees smooth and prevent a tan from looking dull and muddy.

Face Exfoliation: The De-Tan Secret

Swap your usual routine for a detox face mask once or twice a week.

  • Why it works: These masks pull out deep-seated oil and help lift away the tan that daily washing is unable to reach.
  • The Rule: Never use a physical scrub and a clay mask on the same day, and your skin will thank you for the mercy.

Summer Skincare by Skin Type

  • Oily & Acne-Prone: Gel cleansers are your best friend. Use a detan face mask to keep your pores from getting overwhelmed by the heat.
  • Dry Skin: Focus on creamy textures. Do not over-exfoliate because once a week is plenty.
  • Sensitive Skin: Avoid gritty scrubs. Stick to soothing masks and always patch-test a new Vitamin C serum before diving in.

Final Takeaway

A summer routine is only as good as its consistency at the end of the day. You do not need a complicated shelf. Just protect yourself with SPF in the morning and allow your skin to repair with a Vitamin C serum and a detan face mask at night. Your skin will stay bright and feel ready for whatever the challenges summer brings.

Ultimate guide to layering serums for glowing skin

Ultimate guide to layering serums for glowing skin

Get expert tips on layering serums to improve your skincare routine. Find out which serums you can mix for the best results.

Serums are highly concentrated products formulated to deliver active ingredients into the skin to address specific skin concerns, including pigmentation, fine lines, loss of firmness, and dull skin. Although the benefits of using serums are well established, layering them to achieve these benefits poses significant challenges due to chemical interactions and the skin’s tolerance.

What is the best layering of serums?

The overall strategy for layering serums is to apply them from thinnest to thickest and to identify the right time of day for each active ingredient. “Water-based serums, such as Vitamin C or Niacinamide, should be applied first. The slightly thicker products will follow”, Dermatologist Dr Varshini Reddy tells Health Shots. These may include peptides or oil-based serums. The layering order must be correct for each active.

  1. Vitamin C

An antioxidant that has skin-lightening properties and protects the skin from oxidation. By far the best time to use vitamin C is in the morning, when the skin has the opportunity to shield itself from environmental factors. “To reduce sensitivity, a beginner may use a low concentration that they can gradually increase”, says Dr Reddy. In addition, alternative skin antioxidants are available for those sensitive to vitamin C.

2. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

It has numerous benefits for the skin, from barrier repair to sebum control. “Its use will not interact adversely with other creams or serums containing other actives, such as Vitamin C”, says the doctor. Niacinamide works very well both during the day and at night.

3. Retinoids

They are the gold standard for anti-ageing. Retinoids promote skin cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, and help reduce fine lines and hyperpigmentation. “Retinoids should be used in the evening because they are photosensitive. They should also be used cautiously to minimise irritation,” says the doctor. We recommend starting with twice to three times a week. A chemical exfoliant should not be used on the same day as the use of retinoids.

4. Peptides

They are short chains of amino acids that signal the skin to synthesise collagen and support firmness. “They are generally light and can be mixed with most serums, such as antioxidants and retinoids”, says the expert. They may be used either for morning or night care.

Layer serums from thinnest to thickest, and remember to seal them with a moisturiser to keep the active ingredients locked in. “Introduce only one new active ingredient at a time so you can monitor your skin’s tolerance and minimise potential irritation”, suggests Dr Reddy.

How to layer your skin care routine?

A sample layering routine could be: Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and peptides in the morning, followed by moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen. “Then, one might use Niacinamide, retinoids (two to three times per week), AHA/BHA-based toners or serums, peptides, and a hydrating moisturiser”, says the expert. Hydration is key, as water-based serums enhance the penetration and effectiveness of other actives.

What are the benefits of layering skincare?

Overall, layering serums can significantly improve skin outcomes when applied in the correct order, at appropriate concentrations, and at the proper timing. “Being informed about the properties of each active and following principles of evidence-based layering safely optimises the routine for improving texture, brightness, and overall skin health in the patient,” says the dermatologist.
