In the ever-evolving world of beauty trends, few have sparked as much debate – and discomfort – as “menstrual masking”. This is the practice of applying menstrual blood to the skin, usually the face, as a form of DIY skincare.

Popularised on social media, hashtags such as #periodfacemask have amassed billions of views. In most videos, users apply menstrual blood for a few minutes before rinsing it off. There’s no clear agreement on how much blood to use or how long to leave it on. Some call the practice healing or empowering, describing it as a spiritual ritual that connects them to their bodies and ancestral femininity. But what does the science say?

Advocates of menstrual masking often argue that period blood contains stem cells, cytokines and proteins that could rejuvenate the skin. There is currently no clinical evidence to support using menstrual blood as a topical skincare treatment. However, its biological composition has shown potential in medical research.

A study found that plasma derived from menstrual fluid could significantly enhance wound healing. In laboratory tests, wounds treated with menstrual plasma showed 100% repair within 24 hours compared with 40% using regular blood plasma. This remarkable regeneration is thought to be linked to the unique proteins and bioactive molecules in menstrual fluid: the same substances that allow the uterus to rebuild itself every month.

Researchers are now exploring whether synthetic menstrual fluid could help treat chronic wounds.

Stem cell research has also turned attention to menstrual blood–derived stem cells, or MenSCs. These cells grow easily and can develop into many different cell types. Studies show that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from various sources can help heal skin by boosting collagen, reducing wrinkles and releasing growth factors that repair damage caused by burns, UV exposure or wounds. Because they are versatile and appear safe, MenSCs are seen as a promising option for developing medical treatments to regenerate skin and slow photoaging: the premature aging caused by long-term sun exposure.

Not the same as a “vampire facial”

Some menstrual masking advocates liken the practice to the so-called “vampire facial”: a cosmetic procedure popularised by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian. Vampire facials use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) extracted from a patient’s own blood and injected into the face.

But experts caution against comparing PRP with menstrual blood. Menstrual fluid is a complex mixture of blood, sloughed-off endometrial tissue (the uterine lining), vaginal secretions, hormones and proteins. As it passes through the vaginal canal, it can pick up bacteria and fungi, including Staphylococcus aureus, a common microbe that normally lives on the skin but can cause infections if it enters cuts or pores. There’s also a risk that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could be transferred to the skin.

PRP, by contrast, is prepared under sterile conditions. During PRP treatment, a small amount of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelet-rich layer, which is then injected into the skin using fine needles. Some clinicians also add filler for faster cosmetic results. The procedure can cost thousands; unlike menstrual masking, which is free and easily accessible.

“Body-based” beauty

Menstrual masking isn’t the only unconventional beauty practice involving bodily fluids. “Urine therapy,” the application of urine to the skin, has roots in Ayurvedic medicine and was once believed to detoxify the body and cure ailments. Some modern advocates even claim benefits for acne or eczema, although these claims lack scientific support.

While urine does contain urea – a compound used in some moisturisers – the urea found in urine is far less concentrated and not the same as the purified, synthetic form used in skincare products. The idea that raw urine or menstrual blood could safely replace clinical-grade cosmetic ingredients is not supported by dermatological evidence.

Menstrual masking sits at the intersection of body positivity, cultural ritual and pseudoscience. For some, it’s a celebration of the menstrual cycle and a rejection of stigma. For others, it’s an unproven and potentially risky beauty trend.

The biological richness of menstrual blood is undeniable, but its safe and effective use belongs in controlled medical research – not in DIY skincare routines. As with many viral health trends, it’s vital to distinguish between symbolism and science. Menstrual masking may feel empowering, but from a dermatological perspective, it’s a practice best left to personal belief rather than the bathroom mirror.

What Happened When I Finally Tried Exosomes, The Biggest Skincare Trend Of 2025

What Happened When I Finally Tried Exosomes, The Biggest Skincare Trend Of 2025

What have you done to your face?” I ask a colleague visiting from Germany, his skin akin to that of a lit candle. “Exosomes,” he replies, smiling, passing a hand across his luminescent visage.

I’m not surprised. Recently, it’s been hard to move for talk of exosomes. A skin-rejuvenation treatment that’s reached our shores after years of popularity in South Korea, exosomes have become synonymous with radiant skin and minimal downtime – a beauty editor’s happy place. There are in-clinic exosome treatments and at-home options.

On social media, people are reporting back after having exosomes injected into their scalps for excess hair shedding. (This, I hasten to add, is not legal in the UK yet.) So what are these genius things and why have they got the skincare industry so abuzz?

What are exosomes?

“Exosomes are tiny, extra-cellular nano vesicles – very small particles that can penetrate easily and are involved in cell-to-cell communication,” facialist to the stars and editors alike, Sarah Chapman, explains to me.

Think of them like clever couriers carrying biological information between cells, all the while carrying proteins, lipids, peptides and other genetic material along with them. Most impressively, exosomes accelerate skin healing and skin regeneration.

These ultra-reparative, anti-inflammatory messengers target skin texture and hydration, as well as supporting collagen and elastin production, and maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier.

Where do exosomes come from?

In the UK, the only legal exosomes are those that aren’t derived from humans – though we do naturally produce them. Instead, fish, bovine, yeast-cultured and plant exosomes, which can be manipulated to mimic human exosomes, are all that’s currently on offer.

Celebrity facialist Shane Cooper uses E50 Korean exosomes, derived from the fibroblast cells of salmon, and says their concentration and efficacy rate has helped him to repair his own skin barrier and calm down rosacea flare-ups. (E50 Korean exosomes aren’t to be confused with polynucleotides, another salmon byproduct also used to stimulate cell regeneration.)

What happens in an exosome treatment?

The way exosomes are administered can vary, though they’re usually introduced to the skin via injection or applied to the skin after a round of microneedling. There is a third, needle-free way, but more on that later.

“Exosomes can be delivered into the skin via direct injection – mesotherapy style,” aesthetic doctor and founder of the eponymous clinic Dr David Jack tells me, “which is where tiny, superficial injections place the exosome solution precisely into the dermis [the inner of the two main layers in the skin].”

The method you’re most likely to come across is microneedling. “Microchannels are created in the skin, which then allow topical exosomes to penetrate,” Dr Jack says, making me think of a crumpet slathered in exosome-rich butter. These microchannels allow the exosomes to reach deeper into the skin and work their magic where it’s most needed.

What skin concerns can exosomes treat?

Besides being suitable for innumerable skin concerns – from acne scarring to improving skin volume and calming skin redness and irritation – exosome treatments are unique due to the remarkably short recovery times required.

Τι είναι το “mistletoe makeup”;

Πώς να το δημιουργήσεις στο σπίτι;

TikTok ‘no-makeup movement’ trend rises in popularity

TikTok ‘no-makeup movement’ trend rises in popularity

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – From Hollywood red carpets to TikTok trends, more women are saying goodbye to glam and hello to authenticity. The no-makeup movement is redefining beauty, celebrating natural skin, self-confidence, and the power of being real.

This trend has been an off and on occurrence since the 2010s, but currently, it has somewhat evolved into a full-blown beauty philosophy, prioritizing authenticity and age diversity, but for some beauty lovers, they just can’t conceal their devotion to makeup.

Makeup dates back thousands of years, but after centuries of coloring and contouring.

“I cannot live without my foundation, my powder, and my bronzer. I love my bronzer because I’m so pale, so I have to put on some color,” Bank Teller Gracie Justus said.

Today’s trend is turning: people are putting the brushes down and going natural.

“A lot of people are moving towards preserving their skin, and to take care of their skin versus covering it with makeup and things like that,” Cosmetology & Barber Instructor at Vernon College Elisha Wehrweine said.

But some community members won’t shadow their love for the glam.

“Um, yeah, you’ll never see me without makeup,” Justus said.

In 2024, between 40 to 60 percent of women reported wearing makeup.

“I choose to wear makeup because I think it just makes me feel more professional and more put together. I am kind of the face of the bank when people walk in, they see me first. So, I like to at least look a little put together,” Justus said.

Women in broadcast, luxury retail, hospitality, and personal appearance are most likely to carry makeup.

“A lot of the higher-profile people are starting to move towards the natural. Like they may emphasize a lip, they make emphasize their eyes, but they’re not sculpting their face with highlighter, bronzer,” Wehrweine said.

Women who’ve brushed off old beauty rules are leaning toward SPF, Vitamin C, retinols, and exfoliants.

“People are more aware of what’s in the air with pollution and what’s in products,” she added.

“I say do whatever makes you comfortable. If makeup is your thing, go for it. If not, that’s fine too. You don’t have to wear makeup to look professional,” Justus said.

Whether the no-makeup trend comes or goes, every woman deserves to blush with confidence and feel beautiful on her own terms.

“In the end, it’s really pushing that person to feel beautiful and love themselves. So, if wearing makeup, even if it’s full glam, or just a little bit, or none at all. If they feel beautiful in their own skin and that’s what they need for those products or not those products, then that’s what they deserve,” Wehrweine said.

Experts share the best way to keep your skin healthy, makeup or no makeup, is daily care plus regular check-ins with a dermatologist, ideally once a year. After all, glowing skin starts with good habits.

What Is Ear Seeding Trend? 2025

What Is Ear Seeding Trend? 2025’s Hottest Fashion Way To Relieve Stress And Boost Wellness

If you thought wellness trends had peaked with crystal water bottles and face yoga, think again. The newest obsession taking over beauty counters, social media, and celebrity wellness routines is ear seeding—a chic, low-effort practice that blends fashion with ancient healing. From K-pop stars to wellness influencers worldwide, everyone’s adorning their ears with what look like miniature gold or crystal studs. But there’s more to these earrings. Keep reading to know.

All about the Ear Seeding trend

Ear seeding might look like statement jewellery, but it’s actually rooted in auriculotherapy, a branch of traditional Chinese medicine. As per the media reports, the concept is simple: the ear acts as a micro-map of your body, with more than 120 acupressure points connected to organs and systems. By stimulating these points, without needles, ear seeds aim to restore balance and ease stress. Think of it as acupuncture’s glamorous, pain-free cousin.

Originally, this ritual used humble Vaccaria plant seeds. But the wellness world loves a glow-up: today’s ear seeds come in everything from magnets and stainless steel to titanium, ceramic, Swarovski crystals, and even 24K gold beads. They’re eye-catching, conversation-starting, and a subtle way to destress.

The process itself is simple and totally painless. Whether you’re DIY-ing at home or doing it by a practitioner, tiny seeds or beads are placed on specific points of the outer ear with adhesive tape. You gently press these points throughout the day to activate them. Most people wear the seeds for up to five days, soaking in the relaxation (and compliments) before swapping them out for a fresh set.

Benefits of Ear Seeding

While research is still ongoing, experts, including those at the Cleveland Clinic, note that ear seeding can positively influence stress levels, anxiety, insomnia, and even chronic pain. The practice stimulates nerves like the vagus and trigeminal, which regulate the body’s stress response and cortisol levels. Regular use may help improve sleep, mood, and overall relaxation.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, ear seeds can support relief from:

Anxiety and depression

Migraines and insomnia

Muscle tension and chronic pain

Infertility and hormonal imbalance

Stress-related fatigue or weight concerns

It’s also seen as a gentle, non-invasive way to reconnect with your body and encourage mindfulness.

Are there any side effects?

Ear seeds are generally safe, but a few precautions matter. Medical reports suggest overpressing the points can cause tenderness, while sensitive skin may experience mild irritation or redness from adhesives. Some users report dizziness or nausea if the wrong point is stimulated, and it’s important to avoid the practice during pregnancy, as one specific point can induce labour.

Otherwise, this stylish self-care ritual is both wearable and therapeutic.

Holographic Eyes Are Winter's Coolest Makeup Trend

Holographic Eyes Are Winter’s Coolest Makeup Trend

You don’t have to wait for a New Year’s party invite to sparkle. As temperatures drop and shimmers sneak back into your makeup bag, ice queen beauty is back.

Once defined by the frosted lips and baby-blue lids of the early 2000s, frosted makeup is getting a sleeker reboot this winter. Think of it as the high-shine sister of “clean girl” glam. But it’s not just about glossy skin and lips. Enter: holographic eyes.

The look has caught fire on TikTok, where creators are layering opalite shadows that flash between lilac, silver, and seafoam — a grown-up nod to the frosted look that Hilary Duff and Britney Spears once rocked. But beauty lovers today are trading the chunky glitter of the early aughts for a softer iridescence, making the nostalgic eye look feel more Euphoria than indie sleaze.

Celebrities like Dua Lipa, Lily Allen, and Gabriette have been spotted playing with shimmery lids recently, while brands like Dior and MAC are fueling the revival with chrome paints and palettes. The result? Part ice queen, part snow fairy — and 100% the coolest look of the season.

How To Rock Holographic Eyes

The beauty of holographic eyes is that they can be as subtle or extra as you want. For beginners, start with a creamy pigment — shades that land somewhere between icy blue, lilac, and silver tend to look the most dimensional. Dab the product across your lids with your fingers for an effortless sheen.

For a full-glam ice queen look, layer a chrome pigment over concealer and sticky eyelid primer. Concentrate the product in the inner corners and blend out with a fluffy brush for a dramatic pop of shimmer. Add a touch of holographic liner to your lower lash for an extra doe-eyed effect.

If you’re leaning grunge instead of ethereal, holographic still works. Just smudge a darker shadow in the outer and inner corners, then blend the holographic pigment in the middle for a halo eye look. The contrast between grit and gloss gives it that ultimate cool-girl Gabriette vibe. Pair it with a concealer lip if you’re feeling the ’90s inspo.

Shop The Trend

There’s just something about the cold weather that calls for shimmer. Is sparkle the cure for getting out of a seasonal slump? Either way, holographic eyes embody everything that makes winter makeup feel fun and dynamic.

The reflective finish pops against neutral knits and flushed cheeks, making the look more wearable than you might think. It’s not about being over-the-top — though you can certainly choose that route. It can also be effortless, like a coincidental sparkle that landed on you from a Christmas decoration.

After months of bronzed makeup, it’s time to trade the warmth for frost — and let your lids do the shimmering.

Birthday Makeup

Look Your Best With The Birthday Makeup Trend

Photo via @sasha.kilby

Your birthday is your day, so why not celebrate it exactly how you want – glam included? TikTok’s beauty community gets it, with birthday makeup videos taking over the feed. These looks are all about going big: dramatic eyes, glitter, and flawless, full-coverage finishes that feel just as special as the day itself. Sure, some may say it’s “too much,” but that’s the point. Your birthday is the perfect excuse to step outside your usual routine and own the spotlight. So if you’re getting ready for your next cake day and need a little inspo, we’ve got you covered with a quick, high-impact makeup look that’s made to wow.

Complexion

If you’re heading out to celebrate, start with a gripping primer to ensure your makeup lasts all night. Once your skin is prepped, apply a high-coverage foundation and a brightening concealer to even out your complexion. Use a creamy contour stick to sculpt your temples, cheekbones, nose bridge, and outer eye corners, blending it out fully with a dense brush. Next, bring color to your complexion with blush – any shade works! Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend upward, using the excess across the bridge of your nose for a soft flush.

Shimmer & Shine

This birthday glam may be simple, but it’s the shimmering details that make it pop. Start with an eyeshadow primer, followed by a neutral matte shade across your lids. Using a dark gray shadow, line above the upper lash line and softly blend it upward for a diffused finish. Tightline both your upper and lower waterlines, then go all out with fluttery false lashes and mascara on the bottom lashes. For the final touch, grab a pearlescent eyeshadow like Stila’s Glitter & Glow and sweep it into the inner corners and along the crease for a luminous glow. Use the same product to highlight the bridge of your nose and cupid’s bow. After all, if there’s ever a day to sparkle, it’s your birthday.
