Habits that may be speeding up your skin ageing: 7 everyday mistakes to watch

Habits that may be speeding up your skin ageing: 7 everyday mistakes to watch

Ageing is an unavoidable part of life, but how quickly its signs appear on the skin can be influenced by more than just genetics. From spending time outdoors without adequate sun protection to smoking and repeatedly irritating the skin, certain everyday habits can contribute to premature ageing.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that lifestyle and environmental factors can cause what dermatologists call “extrinsic ageing”, which happens alongside the natural ageing process. Wrinkles, dryness, loss of elasticity and changes in skin texture can become more noticeable when the skin is repeatedly exposed to damaging factors.

Here are some common habits that may be making the skin look older sooner than it otherwise would.

Skipping sunscreen

One of the biggest avoidable contributors to premature skin ageing is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The Mayo Clinic says UV exposure can damage collagen and elastin, the connective tissues that help skin retain its strength and flexibility. Repeated exposure can therefore contribute to wrinkles and other visible changes.

The AAD recommends using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin when outdoors. It also advises seeking shade and using protective clothing, hats and UV-protective sunglasses.

Trying to maintain a tan

A tan may be considered desirable by some, but deliberately tanning exposes the skin to UV radiation. According to the AAD, tanning, whether outdoors or through indoor tanning equipment, can accelerate premature skin ageing.

The organisation recommends opting for a self-tanner if someone wants a tanned appearance, while continuing to protect the skin from the sun.

Smoking

Smoking is another habit strongly associated with premature skin ageing. The AAD says smoking can speed up the ageing process and contribute to wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion.

The Mayo Clinic also lists smoking among the factors that accelerate wrinkle formation. It explains that tobacco smoke can damage collagen and elastin, while also affecting blood vessels supplying the outer layers of the skin.

Eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrate

Diet can also play a role in skin health. The AAD points to research suggesting that a diet high in sugar and other refined carbohydrates may accelerate skin ageing, while a diet containing plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help reduce damage associated with premature ageing.

This does not mean that individual foods alone determine how quickly someone ages. Rather, the overall quality and balance of the diet may influence skin health over time.

Drinking too much alcohol

Frequent or excessive alcohol consumption may also work against healthy-looking skin. According to the AAD, alcohol can dehydrate the skin and, over time, cause damage that may contribute to an older appearance.

The Mayo Clinic Press similarly includes limiting alcohol among lifestyle measures that can support healthier-looking skin and help reduce factors associated with wrinkles.

Scrubbing or irritating the skin

More aggressive cleansing is not necessarily better cleansing. The AAD advises against vigorously scrubbing the skin because irritation itself can contribute to premature ageing.

Its dermatologists recommend gentle cleansing with a mild cleanser rather than harsh scrubbing. The AAD also cautions against continuing to use skincare products that cause persistent burning or stinging, as irritation can make the skin appear older.

The organisation recommends washing the face when waking, before bed and after heavy sweating, while using gentle movements rather than trying to scrub away every trace of oil or dirt.

Repeating the same facial expressions

Facial expressions are a normal part of everyday life, but repeatedly contracting the same muscles can contribute to lines over time. The AAD explains that repeated facial movements can eventually leave lines that become more permanent as the skin loses some of its ability to bounce back.

The Mayo Clinic makes a similar point, noting that repeated movements such as squinting, smiling and frowning can create grooves that become more visible as skin elasticity decreases with age.

This does not mean people should stop smiling or expressing themselves. Protecting the eyes from bright sunlight with sunglasses, for example, can help reduce frequent squinting.

Natural ageing cannot be stopped, and factors such as genetics remain important. But the AAD says lifestyle and environmental factors can influence how quickly premature signs appear.

The 2026 Skincare Trends to Watch | Beauty & grooming

The 2026 Skincare Trends to Watch | Beauty & grooming

If there’s ever an indication of a new beauty trend or cosmetic treatment, it can be found on the faces of Hollywood’s elite. You best believe if there’s a new magical therapy promising the fountain of youth, they’ve sniffed it out before we’ve ever even heard of it. This was out in full display this week with Emma Stone’s Golden Globes red carpet glow. The treatment responsible? Ivan Pol’s, a.k.a The Beauty Sandwich, “snatched” facial. And it’s not just Emma Stone who’s eating it up. Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Penelope Cruz, Teyana Taylor and more are all converts. Thanks to a layering of his “secret sauce”, bottled in SS02 and SS01, an antioxidant-rich face oil and its double that plumps the skin, in between infra-red and radio frequency devices, Pol’s treatment delivers results akin to Botox – without the needles, of course.

Top Wellness And Skincare Trends To Watch In 2026, According To Experts | Beauty News

Top Wellness And Skincare Trends To Watch In 2026, According To Experts | Beauty News

Last Updated:December 30, 2025, 15:32 IST

From barrier-first Ayurvedic skincare to microplastic-free beauty and skin longevity, discover the key wellness and skincare trends shaping 2026, according to industry experts.

Across Ayurveda-led brands and modern skincare innovators, a shared narrative is emerging: healing over hacking, ritual over reaction, and integrity over instant results

As 2026 approaches, wellness and skincare are moving away from excess and acceleration, toward intention, repair, and long-term balance. Across Ayurveda-led brands and modern skincare innovators, a shared narrative is emerging: healing over hacking, ritual over reaction, and integrity over instant results. Insights from Rajni Ohri, Founder of Ohria Ayurveda, and Nitin Jain, Founder of La Pink, reveal how 2026 will redefine beauty and well-being, inside and out.

Barrier-First Skincare Takes Centre Stage

According to Rajni Ohri, 2026 marks a return to depth over speed. Consumers are becoming cautious of aggressive formulations and are instead embracing barrier-first, Ayurvedic-infused skincare that prioritises repair and resilience. Ingredients such as ashwagandha, manjistha, and licorice are being thoughtfully paired with modern efficacy standards, offering plant-based alternatives that meet dermatologist-approved expectations without compromising purity.

This shift reflects a broader move toward introspective wellness, where protection, nourishment, and long-term skin health matter more than quick visible change.

Beauty From Within Gains Momentum

Beyond topical care, ingestible Ayurveda is emerging as a defining wellness category. Ohri points to growing acceptance of the gut–skin axis, with adaptogens, herbal shots, functional oils, and staples like triphala becoming part of everyday beauty routines. As people seek credible, science-aligned ingestibles, brands rooted in classical knowledge are stepping in to meet modern needs without dilution.

Stress-Supportive Beauty Becomes Essential

The mind–skin connection is no longer a niche concept. Stress-supportive beauty through calming oils, grounding aromas, sleep rituals, and adaptogen-rich formulations is becoming central to skincare routines. Beauty, Ohri notes, is increasingly viewed as nervous system care, offering emotional regulation alongside visible results.

Ritual-Based Living Makes a Return

Perhaps the most defining shift of 2026 is the return to ritual. Practices like self-abhyanga, warm oil scalp massages, mindful mornings, and simplified routines are becoming anchors in daily life. This isn’t about nostalgia, it reflects a collective desire to reconnect with what genuinely sustains health over time.

“In 2026, wellness is about doing what truly heals, not doing more,” says Ohri. “Hybrid Ayurveda where tradition meets science is the new frontier, nourishing the gut, mind, and skin barrier together.”

Microplastic-Free Skincare Becomes Non-Negotiable

From a modern skincare lens, Nitin Jain highlights a parallel awakening: microplastic awareness. Ingredients once used for texture and longevity are now under scrutiny as studies reveal microplastics in human blood and brain tissue. In India, dermatologists are increasingly linking repeated exposure to inflammation and barrier disruption.

As a result, microplastic-free skincare is rapidly shifting from a niche preference to a baseline expectation.

From Glow to Longevity

This awareness is reshaping aesthetics. Jain points to the rise of “butter skin”, soft, nourished, resilient skin that reflects internal health rather than artificial shine. Alongside it is minimal skincare, where fewer, transparent, high-performance products replace overcrowded routines.

The long-term focus? Skin longevity supporting barrier repair, microbiome balance, and graceful ageing rather than chasing instant brightness.

The Rise of Regenerative Actives

Looking ahead, Jain identifies PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) as a hero ingredient poised to dominate skincare in 2026. Known for its regenerative and repair-driven properties, PDRN aligns with the broader shift toward resilience, recovery, and long-term skin strength.

The Bigger Picture

Together, these insights reveal a unified direction for 2026: wellness and skincare rooted in honesty, prevention, and depth. Whether through Ayurvedic rituals or modern regenerative science, the future belongs to approaches that respect the body’s intelligence and support it over time.

In an era of overload, the next chapter of beauty and wellness is quieter, slower and far more meaningful.

“Menstrual masking,” a viral trend where people apply period blood to their face for skincare. (Photo: X, Canva)

What Is ‘Menstrual Masking’? Internet Horrified, Dermatologists Debunk The Period-Blood Skincare Trend: WATCH

226

A new, and rather unsettling, beauty trend has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram called “menstrual masking.” It has left many people in shock and disgust. Menstrual masking involves the application of period blood directly onto your face in pursuit of glowing and youthful skin. Influencers tout this trend and claim that menstrual fluid is rich in stem cells, growth factors, and nutrients that will help cure acne, improve elasticity, and boost collagen. But dermatologists say the trend is neither natural nor safe-and has no scientific backing.

What Exactly Is Menstrual Masking?

Menstrual masking means smearing menstrual fluid onto skin as a face mask, often DIY; creators smear blood on their skin and describe the ritual as ancestral, organic beauty. Proponents most often refer to studies indicating that stem cells derived from menstrual blood are capable of regenerating tissue in the controlled environment of the laboratory.

Research published in the journal Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology found that processed menstrual plasma significantly accelerated wound healing in laboratory experiments. But these results derive from purified, sterile and medically handled samples, not raw menstrual blood collected at home.

Why the Trend Has Shocked Social Media

The videos, featuring users smearing bright red blood on their faces, have gone viral with thousands of comments ranging from disbelief to disgust. Many wondered why influencers were turning bodily fluids into skincare hacks, while creators framed the trend as natural, chemical-free, and empowering. The shock factor only added to its rapid spread across platforms.

Why Dermatologists Are Warning Against It

Dermatologists strongly caution against menstrual masking, emphasizing that menstrual blood is not sterile. The fluid contains a combination of blood, endometrial tissue, cervical mucus and bacteria from the vagina and outer skin. Researchers interviewed in The Conversation say that menstrual blood may contain microorganisms like Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and E. coli all of which could cause infections if applied to the face.

Dermatologists are warning that using menstrual blood on the skin could result in infections, rashes, acne flare-ups, irritation, and disruptions to the skin’s natural pH. They say there is absolutely no clinical evidence that menstrual blood can improve collagen production, mend acne or improve skin texture. And, though menstrual fluid does contain stem cells, those particular cells are unable to penetrate the skin or function without advanced laboratory processing.

Safer Alternatives Backed by Dermatology

According to experts, it’s best to stick with science-backed treatments for anti-aging or skin-repair benefits, rather than using DIY menstrual facials. Dermatologists recommend retinoids to encourage cell turnover, vitamin C to brighten and boost collagen, niacinamide to reduce inflammation, and peptide serums to repair. Even PRP or “vampire facials” performed by professionals and in sterile clinical settings are a safer alternative for people who are attracted to plasma-based treatments.

Why This Trend Still Emerged

Yes, despite the risks, menstrual masking has gained traction due in part to a growing push for “natural” beauty solutions, efforts to challenge stigma around periods, and the internet’s appetite for shock-value content. Some creators are framing it as a statement of body acceptance; others pitch it as a chemical-free alternative to store-bought skincare.

Menstrual masking has been trending, but it’s not safe for your skin. Period blood isn’t the same as a skincare product—it contains bacteria and waste products your body is trying to get rid of. Putting it on your face can actually increase your risk of irritation, infection, pic.twitter.com/VIMArO0BHb

— Dr. Chad (@Dr_Chad_MD) September 16, 2025

Menstrual masking might be going viral on the internet, but dermatologists agree unanimously that it is unsafe, unhygienic, and ineffective. The so-called natural skincare cure has no scientific evidence behind it and carries a lot of health risks. As the viral videos continue to circulate, experts urge viewers to approach the trend with caution and rely on tested, medically approved skincare solutions instead.
