Summer Skincare Habits for a Healthy Glow

Summer heat, strong sun, and sweat can affect skin fast. Simple skincare habits can help you keep a healthy glow all season. Focus on sun protection, gentle cleansing, light moisture, and steady care. Choose products that suit your skin type and local weather. Stay regular, since small daily steps work better than big changes.

Sunscreen is the main summer skincare habit. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on all exposed skin. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine. Do not forget the ears, neck, and the back of the hands. If you have oily skin, choose a gel or light lotion.

Essential summer skincare involves consistent use of broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, gentle cleansing, light moisturising, and managing sweat to prevent breakouts and maintain a healthy complexion.

Put on enough sunscreen to cover your face and neck well. Many people use too little, so the protection drops. Apply it 15 to 20 minutes before going out. If you stay indoors near a sunny window, sunscreen still helps, as light can reach your skin.

Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours when outdoors. Do it sooner if you sweat a lot or wipe your face. Water-resistant sunscreens can help, but they still need reapplication. A hat, sunglasses, and shade add extra support, especially during strong midday sun.

Cleanse gently, not harshly

In summer, sweat, dust, and sunscreen can build up. Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser. Avoid hot water, as it can dry the skin. If you wear makeup, remove it before cleansing. Do not scrub hard, even if the skin feels oily.

If you feel the need to wash more often, use plain water or a gentle face wash. Too much cleansing can strip natural oils. This may lead to more oil and more breakouts. After cleansing, pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub the skin.

Moisturise to protect the skin barrier

Many people skip moisturiser in summer, but skin still needs it. Use a light, non-greasy moisturiser. Look for ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid for hydration. If your skin is oily, choose an oil-free formula. Apply moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp.

Exfoliate with care

Exfoliation can help remove dead skin, but do not overdo it in summer. Over-exfoliation can cause redness and more sun sensitivity. Keep it to one or two times a week, based on your skin type. Choose gentle acids or mild scrubs, and stop if skin stings.

Add simple brightening support

For a more even look, some people use vitamin C in the morning. It can support brightness and help with dullness. Use a small amount and follow with sunscreen. If you have sensitive skin, patch test first. Keep products in a cool, dry place.

Manage sweat and breakouts

Sweat can mix with oil and clog pores. If you get acne in summer, use non-comedogenic skincare and makeup. Shower soon after heavy exercise. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. If you use acne treatments, start slow to reduce dryness and peeling.

Do not forget body skincare

Body skin also faces sun, sweat, and dryness. Use sunscreen on arms, legs, and feet when outdoors. After a shower, apply a light body lotion to prevent rough patches. Pay attention to areas that rub, like inner thighs. Choose breathable clothing to lower irritation.

Care after sun exposure

If your skin feels warm or tight after being outside, cool it down. Rinse with cool water and apply a simple moisturiser. Avoid strong actives on irritated skin for a day or two. If you get frequent sunburn, review your sunscreen use and your time in direct sun.

Protect lips, eyes, and hands

Lips can dry and darken in strong sun. Use a lip balm with SPF and reapply often. For the eye area, wear sunglasses and avoid rubbing. Hands show sun damage early, so apply sunscreen there too. These small areas are easy to miss in daily skincare.

Keep a steady night routine

Night care helps skin recover from daytime stress. Cleanse well to remove sunscreen and dirt. Use a light moisturiser to support repair. If you use actives like retinoids, use them only if your skin tolerates them. Always follow product directions and avoid mixing too many new items.

Support skin with daily habits

Skincare also depends on daily choices. Drink enough water through the day, especially in heat. Try to sleep at a regular time, as tired skin can look dull. Eat a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables for key nutrients. If you are outdoors often, plan shade breaks.

7 Irish skincare experts on their top products and treatments

7 Irish skincare experts on their top products and treatments

Do you find yourself overwhelmed by skincare options? Or simply wondering what’s simply a fad? Some of Ireland’s top skincare experts cut through the noise to reveal the options they stick to, and the ones they’d ban if they could. Kate Demolder writes.

Once, it all seemed so simple: Cleanse, tone, moisturise. However, much has changed in the skincare world, with what seems like thousands of new products launching every week. With that comes conflicting advice: what goes first? Is it better to cleanse once or twice? And is ‘natural’ skincare at all better?

If you’ve found yourself wondering whether your skin would be better suited to beef tallow or retinoids, read on. We spoke to eight skin experts to find out their own skincare routines – and the mistakes they’d run a mile from. (Spoiler: none of them uses beef tallow.)

Agnes Gajewska, Advanced facialist and Face Yoga trainer
https://www.faceyogabyagnes.com/

With a waitlist several months long, Agnes Gajewska is the go-to woman for anyone looking for facial sculpting, and was even recently billed by the Sunday Times as the person to “make skin sing”.

What do you use daily?

My daily rituals revolve around lymphatic work, warm water with lemon and ginger or celery juice and cleansing (Skingredients Prebiotic Cleanser), Vitamin C (C-Esta Serum from Jan Marini or Medik8), serum (my own Óige Peptide Elixir), eye patches (POCO Beauty or any Korean brands), moisturising (Avene) and SPF (SPF Trinny London or Heliocare), although I don’t always use moisturiser in the summer months.

I do a quick Face Yoga by Agnes ritual in the morning – or in the evening if I’m under pressure – and I love walking and listening to podcasts, so definitely lots of steps.

My evening rituals are dry brushing as part of my shower, usually three times a week, with evening skincare of double cleanser, an active toner (a sample of a product I’m working on), an LED mask or Lyma Laser, eye cream (Medik8 Eye Retinol), my peptide elixir and retinal, although I don’t apply active toner under retinol.

What do you do in-clinic?

My salon addiction is Dermalux [non-invasive treatment that uses clinically proven blue, red, and near-infrared wavelengths to rejuvenate skin, reduce acne, and calm inflammation] and investments in my treatments/education.

I also try to do a course of IPL and microneedling every year. I had my semi-permanent brows done two years ago, best decision. I never had injectables, but I’m planning to have a blepharoplasty – I’m just not brave enough yet.

What do you base your skincare choices on?

Science, not trends. Ingredients that really make the difference. I will not spend big money on cleansers and moisturisers, but I do definitely invest in serums, and always apply SPF. I also don’t feel pressure to look 20, and I believe in a 360° approach. (I would like to be better with weights; I’m 44 this year and definitely feeling the change.)

Dr Alex Quinn, aesthetics doctor and founder of the Dr Alex Clinic
https://thealexclinic.ie/

With advanced training across both medical dermatology and aesthetic practice, as well as postgraduate diplomas in Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine, the Dr Alex Clinic is one of the buzziest new clinics in Ireland.

What do you use daily?

I almost exclusively use SkinCeuticals, which is the range I stock in the clinic. That decision was very deliberate. I’m not particularly interested in marketing trends; I’m interested in formulation science, peer-reviewed studies and reproducible results across different skin types.

My morning routine consists of a gel-based, lightly acidic cleanser, Phloretin CF Gel (antioxidant protection), P-TIOX, H.A. Intensifier serum, Triple Lipid Restore, A.G.E. Advanced Eye cream, Ultrasun SPF 50 and SPF, which is the single most important anti-ageing intervention — everything else is secondary to that.

My evening routine is the Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight Cream, which I use twice weekly (I also use this on the backs of my arms for keratosis pilaris), retinol two nights per week and a barrier-focused hydration on non-active evenings. I avoid over-exfoliation and frequent product changes; skin responds best to consistency and barrier integrity.

What do you splurge on?

Regarding in-clinic treatments, I believe in gradual, cumulative improvement rather than dramatic change. Over time, I’ve had: Anti-wrinkle injections (upper and lower face), Profhilo for skin quality, filler-wise I’ve had nose, lip and chin filler all done very subtly to balance my side profile, Polynucleotides in the periocular area, Sunekos [an injectable skin treatment made of hyaluronic acid and amino acids, designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production] for hydration support, Microneedling, BBL and MOXI, a course of chemical peels and fat dissolving under the chin in the past.

These treatments have been spaced and layered over time. The focus is always collagen stimulation, skin quality and subtle structural balance — not transformation.

Anything else?

Finally, I’m a strong believer in the gut–skin axis and take a daily probiotic. I also use sauna and cold plunging regularly, which I find beneficial for overall skin radiance. I don’t routinely have facials; while relaxing, I prioritise treatments with measurable biological impact. Similarly, I don’t personally use red light therapy – it can be effective, but only with strict consistency. Ultimately, my aim is to look like myself, simply well-maintained and healthy.

Dr Hanhushar Gunasagaran, aesthetic doctor at AnuMe Clinic, Cork
https://anumemedicalclinic.com/

Dr Gunasagaran is an experienced Aesthetic Physician specialising in Dermatology and Anti-Aging Regenerative Medicine, and a skincare line founder. As a key opinion leader for Dr Babor Pro Skincare in 2023, she has contributed to the advancement of aesthetic treatments and led a patient outcome study focused on at-home skincare combined with aesthetic procedures.

What do you use daily?

My daily routine, in the morning, is cleansing with Elementre (cleansing gel nettoyant) 3.5% Glycerin + Allantoin Water Lily, applying Definisse (KP1) Regenerating Serum, Relife Definisse (KP1) Revitalising Eye Contour and Celimax pore + dark spot cream: Niacinamide 5%, Tranexamic acid 5%, Melazero V2 1%, a ceramide, and finally, moisturising with Definisse (KP1) Redensifying Cream. I top that off with Purito SEOUL-Daily Soft Touch Sunscreen SPF50++++. I also reapply sunscreen with the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick throughout the day.

My night routine is the same cleanser and eye serum, along with CELIMAX – The Vita-A Retinal Shot Tightening Serum and Skinceuticals Advanced RGN-6.

What do you splurge on?

Once a month, I splurge on a medical grade facial, like a Hydrafacial or chemical peel, and my favourite treatment at the moment is SKINVIVE [an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet injectable designed to boost skin hydration, smoothness, and radiance in the cheeks]; results last me a good 6-9 months and it’s an easy one session treatment, and great value for money.

What do you base your skincare choices on?

My honest opinion with skincare is that a simple regime goes a long way, and it requires consistency more than a hefty price tag. I suggest spending on potent serums and actives, clinically proven treatments, broad-spectrum daily SPF and targeted therapies for pigmentation, ageing, or texture.

Best advice I can give? Pick up sunscreen, lift weights, eat well and start now.

Dawn Hill, facialist and owner of Floraison
https://floraison.ie/

Dawn is the founder of Floraison, a skincare clinic far more than the sum of its parts. Her waiting list is years-long, and she is credited with being one of the foremost minds of niche skincare brands in Dublin.

What do you use daily?

Cleansing is the foundation of good skin, and it’s genuinely my favourite part of my routine. I double cleanse every evening, usually either with the Deviant Blue Tansy Balm, Mansard Baume Initial or the LAST Cleansing Gel.

Serums are the Trojan workers in my routine, my main serum is the Poets Atelier Bio Recovery Serum, and for night-time it’s the LAST Skin Repair Serum, an absolute powerhouse. I use it about three nights a week.

As a complete reset for the skin, I use the Ayuna Longeva Epidermal Fasting Ampoules. I use one ampoule a night when my skin is in need of serious nourishment; after procedures, travelling, after illness or just a stressful period.

Masking is a big part of my routine –– it’s hard to beat the masks from Ayuna, they’re speedy, but wow, results are guaranteed – and a seaweed or salt bath is a must once a week. It’s a ritual now and one I never miss.

Anything else?

Whilst products are important, they will only ever get so deep. I drink a green smoothie daily with chia seeds, spinach, cucumber – anything green! I take Omega 7s daily from Pharmanord. I take Moss Boss daily for a healthy gut. I brew a lot of nettle tea and also drink my own tea that I formulated with Oir Tonics, Rest & Bloom. I drink it about an hour before bed to rest the mind and work on the skin while I sleep.

What are your favourite tweakments?

Aesthetics-wise, I get Botox done twice a year. I believe it can be a lovely addition to a routine, but it shouldn’t be relied on, in my opinion. I get it done with Dr Sarah Kate in D6 Skin in Ranelagh; I send all my clients to her and trust her implicitly.

I’ve gone to Le Formulaire for Sunekos under my eyes, which I will absolutely keep doing. A big part of my routine is micro-needling. I do this on myself, perhaps every three months. LEDs are a big part of my routine, too.

I use the Celluma device (in my opinion, absolutely nothing else comes close), pop on a podcast and let it do its magic for half an hour.

Professor Niki Ralph, Consultant Dermatologist, FRCPI and co-founder of the Institute of Dermatologists

Professor Niki needs no introduction – she is one of two co-founders of the Institute of Dermatologists, where every one of your favourites go for their skincare concerns. A Consultant Dermatologist on the Specialist Register for Dermatology in Ireland, she is an honours graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Clinical Assistant Professor at University College Dublin.

What do you use daily?

In the morning, post-gym, I cleanse the face with creamy cleanser – Clinical+ skin or Probiotic Cleanser (Skingredients) – apply Vitamin C or an antioxidant serum, a multitasking eye cream, like Clinical+ Skin Rejuvenating Corrective Eye Balm, a hydrating moisturiser and finish with broad spectrum, physical only sunscreen: this is a non-negotiable step in my morning skincare routine. I use ELTA MD UV Elements (tinted SPF), which is ideal for patients with sensitive skin.

In the evening, I double cleanse with ELTA MD Oil in a gel cleanser, which is great for removing makeup and oils, and is also suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin. I use Simple Eyemakeup Remover or Optase Life because they’re the only two that don’t sting my eyes, then pat the skin dry and apply my other non-negotiable: a topical retinoid.

A pea-sized amount for the entire face, avoiding lips and eyes. My go-to is Alpharet Overnight Cream by Skinbetter Science, a patented formula, slow-release retinoid (equivalent to prescription strength retinoid), but with added ingredients to moisturise the skin. Then I apply the same eye cream and seal it all with polypeptide firming serum by Clinical+ Skin.

What treatments do you get?

When it comes to procedures, I get anti-wrinkle injections every 3-4 months in my forehead/around my eyes for crows’ feet and occasionally in the masseter muscle as I clench a lot. I’ve also had Ultherapy [skin-tightening treatment], which is great for the lower face, neck and jawline, and Secret PRO, which is an amazing treatment for acne scars and skin rejuvenation that combines radiofrequency, microneedling and CO2 laser.

IPL (intense pulsed light), I usually do once per year for mild pigmentation, and if I am going to an event, I sometimes combine therapies such as a quick IPL/chemical peel and Skinpen microneedling, as there is such limited downtime, but the skin is radiant thereafter.

I’m a big fan of C02 laser for skin resurfacing, improved texture, reduced pore size and its ability to remove precancerous cells in the top layer of the skin.

Anything else?

I have to be honest and say the work is so busy, I am not the best at finishing courses of treatments, so, say, polynucleotides are usually a course of three, and I’ve only ever done two. I prefer this treatment over Profhilo, as it treats the entire face rather than just the cheeks downwards.

If I had time, I would do an Emfusion facial, especially before an event, but I have only ever had this treatment once – it is super relaxing, which is not something I can say about any other treatment!!

Dr Jane Mulrooney, Consultant Dermatologist and co-founder of the Dr Mulrooney Clinic
https://drmulrooney.com/

Dr Mulrooney (MB. BCh. B.A.O., BSc. Pharmacology, MSc. Clinical Dermatology) is another doctor at the forefront of all advances in the treatment of ageing skin and cosmetic dermatology. Specialising exclusively in cosmetic dermatology, her work is known for the less-is-more approach.

What do you use daily?

In the morning, I use Profhilo micellar water for eyes and skin refresh, complexion renewal pads from ZO by Dr Obagi, ZO by Dr Obagi Daily Power Defence, Seavite Eye Contour Gel, Seavite Serum, then P Tiox and CE Ferulic by Skinceuticals.

Then, I wait 10 minutes and apply an SPF 50; I like Vichy, or if I want a tinted SPF, I use Heliocare. I let this soak again for 10 min before applying makeup.

In the evening, I remove my makeup with Seavite Cleanser, followed by ZO’s Gentle Cleanser, the ZO complexion renewal pads that I used in the morning, Seavite Serum, Seavite Eye Contour Gel, and Tretinoin 0.05 % (prescription cream) mixed with Seavite Face cream.

What are your favourite skin treatments in-clinic?

1. Combined facial treatment (CFT) that we use in the Dr Mulrooney Clinic, which consists of a superficial glycolic and lactic peel followed by IPL laser. No downtime and leaves skin glowing, improving skin texture, tone and radiance. I do this monthly.

2. Ultherapy to my brow to lift, and also to lift the jawline and improve collagen in overlying skin. No downtime, and I do this yearly.

3. Fraxel laser to treat pigment and fine lines. Downtime is three days, and I do this three times a year.

4. Profhilo Scructura is injected in front of the ear to lift the jawline and hydrate the under-eye region. No bruising, no downtime and painless to inject.

Dr George Nema, internal medicine and cosmetic dermatology doctor, and owner of The Sculpture Clinic
https://www.sculptureclinic.ie/

Dr George is responsible for maintaining the faces of some of Ireland’s most photographed women, like Rosanna Davidson and Holly Carpenter. Uniquely dual-certified in internal medicine and cosmetic dermatology, his clinics are based in Nenagh and Donnybrook.

What do you use daily?

I do look after my skin. I do the things everybody does in the morning, like cleansing, but I’m passionate about vitamin C, because it works. I don’t touch retinol – it doesn’t agree with my skin, but I like Obagi’s Anti-Ageing Kit, which is basically all about cleansing, good serums and exfoliating when necessary. I love their exfoliating polish and their growth factor. I’m on the oilier side, and they work for me. But the main thing that’s most important to my routine is vitamin C, and also sunblock.

What do you splurge on?

I get Botox 2-3 times a year; everybody can see me on my Instagram doing that. I also like biostimulators, which I inject into myself two or three times a year, and my other big thing is C02 laser, which is a gentle resurfacing laser. I get that every 12-18 months, and that’s the only thing I really think works.

Is there anything you’re totally against?

I’m against microneedling at home because they’re not medical devices, there’s no quality control there, so they’re generally doing more harm than good. I’m also against exosomes – there’s no evidence right now to support their merit, and no backed-up research behind them – and I’m moving away from injecting thicker gels into my clients – I just don’t think it’s necessary.

I’m also obviously against tanning beds and baking in the sun, but I do think we need the sunshine, too. I’m from the Mediterranean, and we only sit in the sun for 30 minutes in the morning, then we wear big hats.

Fenugreek seeds: Your new skincare secret

Fenugreek seeds: Your new skincare secret

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African fenugreek seeds are becoming increasingly popular in the skincare world, thanks to their natural benefits.
These seeds are loaded with nutrients that can help you achieve healthy skin.
They have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and now modern skincare products are also using them.
Here’s how African fenugreek seeds can be a part of your skincare routine, naturally and effectively.

Nutrient-rich composition

African fenugreek seeds are loaded with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and potassium.
These nutrients are essential for healthy skin. Vitamin C helps in collagen production, which is important for skin elasticity.
Vitamin K helps reduce dark circles and blemishes, while potassium keeps the skin hydrated by retaining moisture.

Anti-inflammatory properties

The anti-inflammatory properties of African fenugreek seeds make them ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
The compounds in these seeds help reduce redness and swelling caused by inflammation.
Regular use can calm irritated skin and prevent further breakouts, making it a great addition to any acne-fighting routine.

Antioxidant benefits

African fenugreek seeds are packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals responsible for premature aging.
These antioxidants protect the skin from environmental stressors such as pollution and UV rays.
By neutralizing free radicals, these seeds can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a more youthful appearance.

Versatile usage methods

There are several ways to use African fenugreek seeds in your skincare routine.
You can create a face mask by grinding the seeds into a powder and mixing it with water or yogurt to form a paste.
This mask can then be applied to the face for about twenty minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
Alternatively, you can use fenugreek oil extracted from the seeds as a moisturizer or serum.

As Skincare Tourism Grows, SkinCeuticals Moves To The Fore

As Skincare Tourism Grows, SkinCeuticals Moves To The Fore

More than 38 million aesthetic procedures were performed globally in 2024, including over 20 million non-surgical treatments such as lasers, peels and microneedling, with that figure widely expected to have increased further through 2025 and into 2026.

This is a more informed and more active consumer. Skin is being treated, monitored and managed with a level of precision that was previously confined to clinical settings. The products used in between those interventions are being selected with the same level of intent, supported by growing familiarity with both advanced treatments and high-performance formulations.

It is within this landscape that SkinCeuticals has built its position, operating at the intersection of clinical skincare and everyday use, where formulation strength and consistency of outcome carry greater weight than novelty. The celebrity-favourite brand operates within the dermatological beauty division of L’Oréal, with origins in antioxidant research led by Dr. Sheldon Pinnell at Duke University.

Skin assessment guided by clinical expertise, where diagnosis, treatment and product sit within the same moment, a model now reflected in SkinCeuticals’ Hainan experience.

getty

Travel retail, particularly in Asia, has evolved into a high-engagement environment for beauty, where time, spend and intent converge. Hainan has emerged as one of the most commercially significant examples of this shift.

Hainan operates as China’s duty-free hub, with individual annual allowances of up to RMB 100,000 (approximately £11,000) per shopper. That policy has concentrated premium beauty spend into a single geography, supported by China Duty Free Group, now the largest travel retailer globally.

Sanya and Haikou have become high-volume, high-value environments for skincare. Consumers arrive with intent, higher spending thresholds and time to engage, creating conditions where premium products convert more effectively than in traditional retail.

For brands, this is proximity to a consumer already in a purchasing mindset, already investing in wellness, and already open to higher-value categories.

Where Treatment, Diagnosis And Product Converge

SkinCeuticals’ collaboration with China Duty Free Group and Hydrafacial at The EDITION Sanya sits directly at the intersection of these dynamics. Clinical-grade skincare is placed inside a hotel environment, combining diagnostic tools, device-led treatments and product application within one setting.

AI-supported skin analysis and in-room or spa-based protocols bring consultation, treatment and recommendation into a continuous experience, rather than a series of separate steps. The point of decision sits closer to the moment skin is being actively assessed and treated.

Advanced RGN-6: Designed For Skin That Has Already Changed

Core SkinCeuticals formulations, led by SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, continue to anchor routines through repeat use and clinical recommendation.

SkinCeuticals

That is where SkinCeuticals Advanced RGN-6 has made an immediate impact in its first year, sitting alongside the brand’s established formulations with a broad and loyal following.

Launched in 2025, the formulation was developed over five years to address visible changes that tend to appear in combination – redness, pigmentation, loss of firmness and textural irregularity. SkinCeuticals reports measurable improvement across these indicators, alongside accelerated barrier recovery and compatibility with laser-based treatments.

The formulation brings together niacinamide, peptides and ectoin within a system designed for skin that is reactive or recovering rather than stable. With the continued growth in aesthetic treatments, this reflects how skin is increasingly being managed between interventions.

New Pressures On Skin: Treatment Cycles And GLP-1 Impact

Aesthetic procedures alter skin in the short term, often leaving visible redness, sensitivity and disruption to the barrier. At the same time, the rise of GLP-1 weight loss treatments has introduced additional shifts in skin structure, particularly around elasticity and firmness, now widely discussed within clinical settings.

Prescriptions for GLP-1 medications increased by more than 700% between 2019 and 2023, with UK usage continuing to rise sharply in the past year. These shifts are visible, immediate and increasingly common, shaping what consumers expect from the products they use next.

Brand Built On Formulations That Stay

Celebrity fans of SkinCeuticals: The product appears regularly within routines shared by figures including Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Sienna Miller, alongside continued use in clinical settings.

Getty Images

SkinCeuticals has built its position in areas where formulation strength is visible over time.

Products such as C E Ferulic continue to be used years after launch, supported by clinical recommendation and repeat consumer purchase. The formulation of 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid, remains one of the most referenced antioxidant combinations in dermatology-led skincare.

That consistency shows up across audiences time after time. The product appears regularly within routines shared by figures including Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Sienna Miller, alongside continued use in clinical settings.

Advanced RGN-6 extends that approach into the recovery phase of the skincare cycle.

The Convergence Of Retail, Treatment And Experience

The merging of retail and spa, supported by on-site expertise, real-time diagnosis and immediate prescription, brings treatment and product into the same moment.

SkinCeuticals

What is changing now is the environment in which these products are encountered. The merging of retail and spa, supported by on-site expertise, real-time diagnosis and immediate prescription, brings treatment and product into the same moment.

What sits underneath all of this is a shift in accountability. When skin has already been treated, already changed, already invested in, the product that follows is not being given the benefit of time. Time-pressured consumers expect performance in a way that is visible and repeatable, often within days. That is where loyalty is formed now, not at the point of discovery, but in the moments where something works well enough to be reached for again and again.

From Medik8 to Charlotte Tilbury to Wonderbalm, these are the products our beauty team swear by when it comes to skincare

When it comes to skincare, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach with choosing the best products to achieve glowing, smooth skin. With a variety of different skin types from combination to dry to oily to sensitive in play, we’re often on the hunt for a holy grail product (or products) that’ll leave us with a youthful complexion and luminous finish without the need for expensive salon treatments or procedures.

However, this often comes with a lot of trial and error and money down the drain. So, when we find the perfect skincare regime for us, the stars seem to align and the difference it makes to our skin – and makeup application – is undeniably noticeable. And not only in terms of look.

Finding a routine that improves the appearance of skin can be the key to boosting confidence and adding pep to our step. Our beauty team is in the lucky position of being able to test out a whole host of beauty launches, including skincare.

This makes us pretty clued up on what will deliver some pretty impressive results. And while that means we’re privy to some impressive formulas, many of us find ourselves returning to certain products time and again.

With that in mind, below we’ve curated a list of just some of our favourite skincare products that have left us with the best skin of our lives, from Charlotte Tilbury to Medik8 to the viral Medicube and more.

Bethan’s pick

Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1 – £45

Medik8’s Crystal Retinal is widely regarded as one of the best anti-ageing skincare products on the market

Medik8 Crystal Retinal is one of the few science-backed skincare products to achieve cult status in the industry, beloved by experts and everyday skincare fans alike. The award-winning overnight Vitamin A serum is powered by retinaldehyde (aka retinal), which is said to work 11 times faster than traditional retinol to target fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation.

The formula comes in six strengths, ranging from sensitive (1) to expert (24). As someone with quite reactive skin, I’ve been using the lowest potency formula, and it’s certainly one of the gentlest ways to introduce Vitamin A into a skincare routine, with no redness, flaking or irritation that is sometimes associated with retinoids.

According to Medik8, shoppers can experience clinically proven wrinkle reduction with just one tube; however, this was an independent study on Crystal Retinal 6. Personally, I didn’t notice a change in the fine lines on my forehead with the low strength I have been using, but I did experience an overall glow, smoother texture and slightly firmer feel to my skin.

It’s also formulated with hydrating and soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which help to offset the dryness and irritation that vitamin A products can sometimes cause. In hindsight, I likely could have started at a slightly higher strength, as the formula is clearly designed to be both effective and tolerable. That said, it feels like a solid, low-risk entry point, particularly if you’re new to vitamin A or wary of sensitivity, with the option to build up to stronger concentrations over time for more visible age-defying results.

Priced from £45 to £109, it’s definitely a more premium product, so for those shopping on a shoestring, The INKEY List Advanced Retinal Serum 15ml is a great budget option, priced at £15, which is formulated with 0.2% encapsulated retinaldehyde. Meanwhile, Facetheory’s Retinal Supreme MultiCream 0.2% formula is priced at £55.

Eve’s picks:

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream – £54

Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘facelift in a jar’ Magic Cream is one of Eve Rowlands’ beauty staples(Image: Charlotte Tilbury)

This cream truly deserves the hype that surrounds it. As a moisturiser and primer in one, this face cream markets itself as a ‘facelift in a jar’ – especially with its new supercharged formula – and I must say it really does the trick of reviving dull and tired-looking skin.

The Magic Cream’s new formula is packed with a ‘world-first Recoverstem™ Peptide’, which contains a blend of over 100 multi-action Peptides ‘extracted from the Stem Cells of the Eternal Jasmine Youth Plant™, known for their remarkable ability to continuously renew’.

I tend to apply this in the morning after cleansing and applying a serum, and it gives me a real boost as my skin instantly looks plump, hydrated, and any redness soothed – giving me confidence to leave the house bare-faced. It’s got no SPF in, though, so can be used at night – but don’t forget to apply sunscreen if putting on in the morning.

As a primer, it’s a great base for makeup as it makes my foundation look so smooth – no pilling, with my pores easily blended. The downside is that it’s quite pricey as a 30ml tub costs £54. That being said, a little goes a long way, as my last jar lasted about a year, so it is a good investment.

Superfacialist’s Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil Vitamin C | Brighten Gentle Daily Micro Polish Wash – £10 and £14

Eve Rowlands’ go-to cleansing duo is the Superfacialist’s Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil Vitamin C and Brighten Gentle Daily Micro Polish Wash(Image: Eve Rowlands)

I’ve always been a bit of a cleansing balm lover – the Elemis Cleansing Balm, £52, is one of my faves alongside Lush’s Oat Cleansing Balm, £16, but I recently discovered Superfacialist’s ‘Superglow’ Vitamin C formulations, and I’m a convert. A more affordable option, the Superfacialist Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil is currently on sale at Boots for £9.33 from £14 and is packed with nourishing oils like olive, grapeseed, cucumber and rosehip as well as Vitamin C to dissolve makeup as well as dirt and impurities.

The highly soluble oil is a two-in-one as, once in contact with water, it turns into a cleansing milk to leave a glowy, soft and evened out complexion. My only gripe is that the oil is quite watery, so it sometimes slips through my fingers when applying, wasting the product.

While I’ve not been using it long enough to notice any anti-ageing properties (its formula also includes a high-performance pro-collagen Vitamin C active), my skin is the best it’s ever looked; it’s brighter, has a more even texture, and my pores look less prominent.

This is also helped by the Super Facialist Vitamin C+ Brighten Gentle Daily Micro Polish Wash, now £6.67 from £10 at Boots. The second step in my double cleanse, it leaves my skin smooth and hydrated and feeling taute. It smells divine with a citrus scent that lingers, while Vitamin C adds a radiance boost.

Medik8 Press and Glow Tonic – £34

Medik8’s Press and Glow Tonic is exfoliating, smoothing and brightening(Image: Eve Rowlands)

I’ve tried a good few toners in my time, from the Pixi Glow Toner, £12, to Coats Gentle Hydrating Toning Milk, £10, but since adding this Press and Glow Toner into my skincare routine morning and night, I’ve noticed a significant difference in the texture of my skin. It’s smoother, there are fewer dry patches, and I’ve noticed my pores aren’t quite as large.

While I’ve not seen any major changes to fine lines on my forehead – something some people have reported – or around my eyes (as it’s not recommended for use under the eyes due to their delicate nature), my skin looks and feels invigorated and looks brighter after sweeping a cotton pad with the formula on. And that’s good enough for me. I also enjoy how the bottle has a convenient press-pump applicator that lets the user control how much comes out with a single press of the top – no need to tip it upside down and risk using too much.

While I’ve not experienced many negative effects, some shoppers have been left disappointed with the stinging sensation it leaves on those with more sensitive skin. One user remarked: “I can only use this when I have no blemishes, as it stings otherwise. A shame because this came highly recommended, and is supposed to be suitable for sensitive skin.”

Wonderbalm – £15

The Wonderbalm is an all purpose multi-tasking balm (Image: Eve Rowlands)

I cannot stress how much this Wonder Balm has changed my skin care. A multi-tasking balm, this Korean Beauty wonder has a fast absorbing, yet insanely hydrating formula, which can be used as a moisturiser, hair mask, lip balm, hand cream, makeup primer, makeup remover and eye cream.

It is packed with a whole host of vitamins and antioxidants that are anti-inflammatory, moisturising and promote skin renewal with its ingredients like Olive Oil, Shea Butter, Candelilla Wax, Orange Peel Oil, and Vegetable Oil in the mix.

While I typically use it to treat dry lips, hands and as a face moisturiser, I have applied it to eczema flare-ups, skincare reactions, dermatitis, cuts and scrapes as well as post-shaving. It’s been transformative, calming any issues in just a few hours.

One thing I’d change, personally, is its scent. While it is marketed as being un-fragranced, I feel it has a slight citrus/nutty smell that I’m not too keen on. Although that doesn’t stop me from using it every day.

Jess’s pick

medicube Zero Pore Pads – £20.10

medicube’s pore pads gave beauty writer Jess fast results

I’m the first to admit I can be a bit of a sceptic when it comes to viral skincare. One of my main skincare concerns as someone with an oily complexion has always been enlarged-looking pores around my nose.

I first heard about the medicube Zero Pore Pads after finding out Molly-Mae Hague was a fan of the mild version, and I immediately ordered the standard formula from Amazon. What sets this product apart for me is the pad design, which doesn’t require any additional tools to massage it in.

I noticed my skin appearing smoother in as little as a week, and I don’t feel my make-up settling into pores as much as it previously did, either. I like that these get to work fast, as I’m pretty impatient when waiting for results, as is often the case with new skincare.

I can’t lie, whilst the included tweezer-style pick-up tool isn’t necessarily needed, it does make me feel like somewhat of a beauty pro during my routine. I also notice when I use the pads after cleansing that they often still manage to get traces of fake tan and makeup off my face, which is pretty impressive given that I usually double cleanse.

One downside is that the product left behind by the pad isn’t the fastest to absorb in my opinion, however, I simply massage it in to get the most out of the ingredients. Shoppable at Amazon, they can also be purchased from the likes of LookFantastic and ASOS, but I’d suggest those with more sensitive skin may wish to start with the mild formula.

They’ve fast become my favourite new addition to my beauty routine, and one I’ll immediately repurchase when I next run out.

Narin’s pick

Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse – £25

Narin says this Medik8 cleanser is ‘my secret weapon'(Image: Narin Flanders)

I’ve reached the age where, while I want my skin to feel thoroughly cleaned, lots of face washes and cleansers leave my face feeling tight, dry and stripped of nutrients rather than nourished when I use them. The Medik8 cleanser is my secret weapon.

It has a gentle yet effective AHA/BHA complex that exfoliates without any abrasive grit. The brand says it also helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles and tackles the ageing effects of free radicals. I can’t attest to that (yet!) but I definitely think my skin looks brighter, less blotchy and more even when I use it.

It costs £25 for a 150ml tube, which initially felt a lot, but when I realised how little of a pea-sized amount was enough to fully clean my face, it feels like a cost-effective treat. Medik8 says the tube will last for 140 washes, which at less than 18p a use feels reasonable, but I think it could be even more than that based on my experience – once you get used to not having to squirt loads into your hands to wash your face. because it goes so far

It comes out of the tube as a gel and goes on like a silky, foamy cream. It has a lovely, natural citrus scent that reminds me of lemon pie, and it’s my little evening luxury ritual to wash away the harshness and any impurities picked up during the day.

Jada’s pick

Biodance Bio Collagen-Real Deep Mask (4 Pack) – £14.90

The Biodance mask turns from a gel into a sheet mask(Image: LookFantastic)

I am someone who prioritises skin care at every turn, and I’ve always found a sheet mask to be the ultimate way to wrap up a night of self-care. I used to swear by Garnier’s sheet masks, to the point I’d get a subscription for them on Amazon, but they went out the window as soon as I tried the collagen sheet masks on the market.

I’ve tried a fair few of them, with Rehab, £16 for three, Medicube, £26 for four and Dr Jart’s, £8.50 for one, all standing out to me. There’s one that I keep buying on repeat, though, and that has to be Biodance’s Bio Collagen-Real Deep Mask. For those of us who have seen the viral videos, we know they can be worn overnight, but I tend to use them for about four hours, at which point they’ve gone see-through, and I can peel them off to reveal glowing skin.

My skin is bouncy and moisturised after using these, and they’ve become one of my only skincare must-haves. £14.90 can sound expensive for face masks, but since it’s a four-pack, it works out at about £3.72 per mask. When my skin barrier is inflamed, often due to travel or indulging in foods I shouldn’t, I prefer the blue Hydro Cera-nol mask.

That said, I do want to try the full range especially with the new Caviar PDRN Real Deep Mask which has K-beauty’s cult classic PDRN in. These masks are great for a pamper night and I think a great way to bulk out any gift bags.

Lauren’s picks

LANEIGE Bouncy & Firm Eye Sleeping Mask – £28

This hydrating eye cream works overnight to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles(Image: Lauren Codling)

Laneige is a household name within the beauty world thanks to its iconic Lip Sleeping Masks and hydrating Water Bank collection. But it was the brand’s Bouncy & Firm range, launched last year to plump and revitalise tired skin, that truly changed my routine.

A full year later, I’m still loyal to the entire four-piece line, but the Bouncy & Firm Eye Sleeping Mask, £28, at Boots is the undisputed hero. My under-eyes are notoriously finicky, usually reacting to products with stings or redness, but this formula is different; it’s actually the first eye treatment I’ve ever bothered to repurchase.

Its cooling, gel-like texture glides on smoothly, instantly de-puffs and soothes, and it’s never caused any irritation, even after nightly use. The Bouncy & Firm Sleeping Mask, £32, at SpaceNK, is worth considering, too; it feels rich yet breathable on my skin, locking moisture without feeling heavy or greasy.

Rodial Vit C Brightening Cleansing Pads – £49

These cleansing pads leave Lauren’s skin feeling refreshed and noticeably more radiant(Image: Lauren Codling)

Vitamin C is a permanent fixture in my skincare arsenal, especially on days when my complexion feels lacklustre or drained. These Vitamin C Brightening Cleansing Pads were recommended to me by a fellow beauty writer around six months ago, and it didn’t take me long to become obsessed.

A single swipe is all it takes to sweep away impurities, boost luminosity, and gently refine the skin’s texture. Incorporating them into my morning ritual has been transformative: my face feels instantly awakened, impeccably clean, and visibly more radiant. Plus, the subtle citrus aroma provides a sophisticated, spa-like sensory experience.

While Rodial recommends applying twice daily, I prefer to reserve these premium pads for my AM routine to maximise that morning glow. For my evening dose of antioxidants, I lean on Medik8’s C-Tetra Serum (£45) to ensure I wake up with a bright, revived complexion.

Lucy’s pick

Charlotte Tilbury’s Immediate Eye Revival Patches – £46.40

Lucy recommends storing them in the fridge for a refreshing under-eye feel(Image: Lucy Addicott)

When I haven’t had enough sleep, or I just want to give my under-eyes a lift, I find Charlotte Tilbury’s Immediate Eye Revival Patches the ideal quick-fix. In the mornings, I use the included spatula to scoop up the patches, pop them under my eyes, and ten minutes later, my bags look less puffy, and I feel refreshed.

The £58 pot contains 60 eye patches, which initially I did think was quite steep; however, like all Charlotte Tilbury products I’ve tried, the high quality and results are, in my opinion, worth it. At the moment, the eye patches are on sale for £46.40, bringing a pair down to £1.50 each.

I use them sparingly because of this, but every time I do, I’m reminded why they are a cut above other brands I’ve tried for several reasons. They get to work rapidly, so I don’t have to spend ages in the morning waiting before I can put my makeup on.

Another key factor is that they are 100% non-slip and non-drip, meaning I can walk around the house with them on without worrying they are going to end up on my chin. They also feel very luxurious, with a thick hydrogel cushion that makes me feel pampered.

Unlike other eye patches I’ve tried, these do not leave any residue behind, and I can apply concealer seamlessly without pilling or flaking. There are cheaper alternatives for anyone who wants to use eye patches daily, such as the Pixi Depuffing Eye Patches (£22) and the Beauty of Joseon Revive Ginseng Eye Patches £17.

How to tweak your skincare routine for spring

How to tweak your skincare routine for spring

Winter is notoriously harsh on skin — cold temperatures, wind exposure, and indoor heating systems can strip the skin of its natural moisture, leaving it dehydrated and vulnerable.

Spring, however, brings warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels. Our skin naturally begins to produce more oil, and sweat production increases. Pores may appear more noticeable, and congestion can become more common. The days are also longer, with stronger UV exposure, and after months of limited sun exposure, skin may be more susceptible to UV damage. Here’s my advice for tweaking your skincare routine for the season ahead.

Introduce a retinol

It’s the perfect time to introduce retinol if you haven’t already, as skin is better able to tolerate actives when the sun is less intense than in the summer months. Starting a retinol in spring allows your skin to acclimatise to it. Winter can lead to dryness, flakiness, and redness, so skin has enough to deal with, without any extra potential irritation from retinol. Retinol’s exfoliating properties can help reverse this damage in spring, leaving your skin looking refreshed and revitalised. By incorporating retinol into your spring skincare routine, you’re also prepping your skin for the sun-exposed days of summer.

Add an exfoliator

Winter can leave skin looking dull, dry, and flaky, and when you add sweat and pollution into the mix, congestion can quickly follow. Introducing an exfoliator into your routine can help restore a healthy, glowing complexion. Exfoliation offers multiple benefits: it smooths rough skin, improves texture, softens the appearance of fine lines, treats and prevents ingrown hairs, evens out tone, brightens dullness, fades dark spots and pigmentation, reduces blemishes, and boosts the
absorption of your other skincare products.

  • Try it: Holos Skincare AHA deep cleansing cream/masque, €42, holos.ie

Use an antioxidant serum

After months of cold, dry weather, skin can start to look dull, uneven, and tired. Adding a vitamin C serum to your routine can help brighten the complexion and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. As we spend more time outdoors in spring, environmental stressors can also contribute to dryness, dullness, and a loss of elasticity. Increased sun exposure may lead to sunspots and hyperpigmentation but antioxidant serums such as vitamin C can help protect the skin and reduce these effects. If your skin can’t tolerate vitamin C, there are plenty of other antioxidants to choose from, including Q10, niacinamide, resveratrol, and green tea.

  • Try it: Image Vital C hydrating anti-ageing serum, €90, South William Clinic

Image Vital C hydrating anti-ageing serum, €90, South William Clinic

Don’t neglect the neck

Our necks have been protected under scarves and polo necks until now but they’re more exposed in spring. It’s so important to look after our necks as the skin there is thinner, more sensitive, and has fewer oil glands, so it can become crepey, lose firmness, and start sagging. Double moisturising is one way to correct this and, as the skin on the neck is more prone to sun damage due to its paper-thin texture, always ensure that you use an SPF there too. Make sure to bring your moisturisers, serums, and even retinols down your neck. If you’re starting fresh on your neck, a neck-specific product to retexturise, replump, and firm may be just the ticket.

  • Try it: NeoStrata, €76, Allcare Pharmacy

NeoStrata, €76, Allcare Pharmacy

Don’t forget sunscreen

Another reminder. UV levels begin to increase from early March, meaning the spring sun can be more intense than we realise and our skin isn’t used to it. After winter, skin is less accustomed to UV exposure, so it can be more sensitive when suddenly exposed during outdoor activities. Even though the weather can be changeable and the temperatures chilly, and you mightn’t immediately notice the effects on your skin, the UV Index can already reach levels of three or four during spring. Don’t assume you’re safe just because you’re spending most of your time indoors — while glass blocks most UVB rays (which cause burning), UVA rays (which contribute to premature skin ageing) can penetrate it. Even if you’re heading on a skiing holiday, a high-protection SPF and proper eye protection are essential as snow reflects sunlight and UV rays become more intense at higher altitudes.

  • Try it: Sculpted by Aimee Beauty Base Protect, €30, Boots

Switch to a lighter moisturiser

One of the most important skincare changes in spring is switching your moisturiser. Heavy creams that work well during colder months can feel overly rich once temperatures rise. Of course, if your skin is dry year-round and thrives on a thick cream, you can absolutely continue using your winter moisturiser. But if you’ve oily or combination skin, a lightweight lotion or gel cream is better. Lighter formulas provide the hydration your skin needs without feeling heavy or clogging pores. Choosing non-comedogenic formulations can also help prevent congestion and breakouts.

Inside Lucy Folk’s Go-To Skincare and Make-Up Routine

When it comes to skincare and make-up, Lucy Folk keeps things simple. The designer and founder of her eponymous lifestyle and fashion label favours natural formulations, including Janine Knizia, the skincare line by – and named after – Muse & Heroine’s founder.

For Folk, beauty goes beyond products on a shelf. She takes an inside-out approach, prioritising plenty of water and a diet rich in fermented foods and collagen, alongside rituals that help her feel balanced.

Here, she opens the bathroom cabinet at her Noosa home and shares the products in her daily routine.

Read on for Folk’s go-to natural deodorant, favourite concealer and the fragrance she’s wearing right now.

What are the non-negotiables in your daily skincare routine?

I swim in the ocean as much as possible to mineralise my body inside and out, and I love basking in the morning sun. I cleanse morning and night with De Mamiel’s Restorative cleansing balm, washed off with filtered water using organic cotton pads.

I then apply Janine Knizia’s Haute Eau AM firming and renewal concentrate, followed by its Milk Glacé Superliftstar. While the serum sinks in, I use a gua sha tool, and finish with Janine Knizia’s Taffy Crème Super Riche for deep hydration and natural lifting. Sometimes I’ll use the Cecily Braden lymphatic brush post-cleanse before starting the routine. At night, I add Janine Knizia Haute’s Eau PM.

Diet is everything for me: fermented foods, collagen-rich meals, and plenty of good fats like olive oil, ghee, butter, eggs and avocado. Drinking fresh and good quality water is my number one beauty hack. Capi is the best. (Folk’s father, Pitzy, owns the brand.)

What’s the one product you’d replace immediately if it ran out?

Living Libations Poetic Pits. I adore this natural deodorant and use the Palo Santo scent. I also use their dry shampoo – it is the best.

What’s your approach to beauty and skincare?

I’ve learnt that simplicity is key. I’m drawn to facials and practitioners who focus on healing from the inside out – this gives me the extra glow. I look for clean products and like to evolve my routine with the seasons, travel and climate. I invest in quality skincare and treatments, but I’ve never had botox or filler. I think ageing is elegant; my mum is my role model – she looks amazing!

What fragrance are you wearing at the moment? Is it the same one you always wear?

Coeur de Bois, which I created in collaboration with [Melbourne-based slow perfume label] Perdrisat, and I released for all my stores. It means “heart of wood” and centres around guaiac wood, which is an aphrodisiac and has the perfect scent strength. You can share it with your boyfriend or use it all for yourself.

The best beauty tip, hack or advice you’ve received?

Love and happiness are the secrets to beauty. And good water … water, water, water, water. Keep things natural!

What’s the newest purchase on your shelf?

A calendula and olive oil sun oil gifted by a friend. I’ve been using it daily all over my body. It’s a sunny-coloured oil rich with skin-soothing resins.

What make-up products are in your regular rotation?

RMS Beauty’s Uncover-Up concealer – it’s essential for tired eyes. Living Libations Seabuckthorn Hot Lover Lips plumps your lips naturally with its blend of cinnamon, cayenne, turmeric and ginger essential oils. I also love the Merit Clean Lash mascara.

What’s your relationship with skincare and make-up like? Are you a beauty obsessive, a minimalist or somewhere in between?

I love beauty! With make-up and skincare, I am somewhere in between. I think it’s important to feel good, and for your skin to shine and radiate how you feel on the inside. Make-up has never really been a passion of mine – I like to keep it to a minimum.

I’m more drawn to the rituals: applying my creams, following the steps and doing manual face gym to keep my skin supple. I love facials, bodywork and massages, and while I’m not overly disciplined day-to-day, I rely on treatments and a clean lifestyle to keep everything in balance.

Why your skincare stops working at a certain age – and how to adjust your routine

Why your skincare stops working at a certain age – and how to adjust your routine

Picture: iStock / Jacoblund

As we age, our skin’s needs change. So, our skincare should, too. If you find yourself side-eyeing your usual skincare products because they don’t seem to be working anymore, here’s why it’s happening. Also, find out how to adjust your routine to suit your skin’s changing needs.

You may have noticed that your favourite skincare products don’t work quite the way they used to. This isn’t because the product has suddenly become ineffective, but because the skin’s needs have changed.

Skin often begins to behave differently in the mid-30s and again when a woman enters perimenopause. At this stage, hormonal and structural changes affect how the skin responds to ingredients. But the good news is that a few tweaks to your routines can make a huge difference.

Biological and structural ageing

As we age, the skin’s natural cell turnover slows. Dead skin cells build up more easily, leaving skin looking dull and less responsive to active ingredients.

At the same time, collagen and elastin production decline. This leads to reduced firmness and elasticity, which topical creams can’t really fix. The skin also produces less oil, making it drier and weakening the skin barrier. For many women, this barrier starts to decline in the mid-30s.

Perimenopause/menopause

Hormonal changes during perimenopause accelerate these shifts. A drop in oestrogen contributes to a rapid decline in collagen production, while fluctuating androgen levels can lead to adult acne, dryness or sensitivity. As a result, products that once worked well – even a favourite moisturiser – may suddenly seem less effective.

External factors

Lifestyle plays a role. High sugar intake, poor sleep and lack of sunscreen can impact how skincare performs. Using formulas that no longer suit your skin type and age also irritates and reduces results.

How to adjust your routine

1. Prioritise barrier support:

Your skin barrier protects against pollutants and locks in moisture. Support it with a gentle cleanser and barrier-support ingredients like ceramides. Avoid exfoliants and retinoids until irritation settles.

2. Switch to richer formulations:

Hydrating creams and serums can replenish the lipids your skin loses with age.

3. Introduce stronger activities carefully:

If your routine has hit a plateau, ingredients such as antioxidants or retinoids can help – but only once the skin barrier is healthy.

4. In-clinic treatments:

For deeper structural concerns, treatments such as microneedling and other non-invasive procedures may offer results that topical products cannot.

The bottom line

Skincare needs evolve with age. By understanding them and adapting your routine, you can continue to support and enjoy healthy, glowing skin.
