Must-have skincare ingredients for every age group • PhilSTAR Life

Every now and then, a new beauty trend dominates our feeds—from must-have launches to formulas promising everything from glass skin to age-defying magic. It’s easy to get swept up when favorite creators swear by a product, but before adding that viral serum to your cart, ask yourself: Is it actually right for your skin—and your age?

Choosing skincare goes beyond picking a popular brand, believing bold marketing claims, or falling for pretty packaging and pleasant fragrances. The key to building an effective routine is paying attention and understanding a product’s ingredients.

If you’re wondering where to start, experts break down the science-backed ingredients your skin craves at every stage of life.

Embracing the journey of aging

Gone are the days when aging was treated like a crisis that needed constant fixing. Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang points out a cultural pivot, noting that people are finally ditching the fear of growing older and instead leaning into self-care that celebrates natural longevity.

“I think with the advent of an emphasis on the importance of proper skincare or taking good care of yourself, people are now more leaning towards embracing what aging really is,” she told PhilSTAR L!fe.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mai Diño-Yanga shared a similar view, saying, “Instead of treating wrinkles, laugh lines, or volume changes as problems to be erased, the pro-aging mindset treats them as normal, expected evidence of a life being lived, and it puts the focus back on skin health rather than skin ‘perfection.’ Skincare supports that by prioritizing function over correction,” she said.

She added that the focus is more on building healthy, resilient skin through proper care than aggressively treating wrinkles, emphasizing graceful aging over looking ageless.

Essential skincare ingredients for different ages

While you can build healthy habits at any age, early prevention creates the ultimate foundation for skin resilience. During the teenage years, puberty often brings oiliness and breakouts, making a minimalist approach best: a cleanser and sunscreen by day, paired with a cleanser and moisturizer at night. Salicylic acid or mild retinoids can be introduced to keep pores clear, but daily sun protection remains the absolute need.

In your 20s

Entering your 20s is the ideal window to establish habits that safeguard your skin long-term, Diño-Yanga, owner of Pacific Skin Bel-Air and MDY Skincare, said.

Both dermatologists emphasize that daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a strict, “non-negotiable” step to prevent premature photoaging.

As natural collagen production quietly begins to slow down, this decade focuses on early defense. Niacinamide helps balance oil and strengthen the barrier, Vitamin C delivers essential morning antioxidant defense, and gentle alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic or glycolic acid keep cell turnover smooth.

In your 30s

By the time you reach your 30s, skincare becomes more targeted toward maintaining barrier strength and smoothing early fine lines, Lao-ang noted. This is often the decade to transition from gentle retinol to stronger retinoids, including prescription tretinoin, based on your skin’s tolerance.

To complement these powerful actives, hydration powerhouses like peptides, polynucleotides, and ceramide-rich moisturizers take priority to keep the skin firm, plump, and deeply nourished.

Meanwhile, Diño-Yanga explained that as collagen production gradually declines, ingredients like retinoids can help support collagen and improve skin texture. She added that vitamin C and peptides can help protect and support the skin, while a ceramide-rich moisturizer and daily SPF 30 to 50 remain important to maintain the skin barrier and prevent further damage.

In your 40s, 50s

In your 40s and 50s, natural collagen loss accelerates, cell turnover slows, and dryness becomes far more common due to hormonal shifts like perimenopause. Barrier repair and deep hydration become the main defense, Lao-ang said.

Look for rich formulas packed with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and barrier-replenishing lipids like ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Antioxidants like vitamin C and exfoliating acids provide additional support.

Higher-strength retinoids and exfoliating acids still play a key role in boosting cell turnover, Diño-Yanga said, while tinted sunscreens offer necessary added protection against visible light that triggers stubborn pigmentation. Many individuals may also explore clinic-based treatments such as injectables and lasers, emphasizing that skincare should always be personalized based on each person’s needs and concerns.

Ingredients to use separately and those that work together

When building your daily routine, chemical compatibility is just as crucial as ingredient selection. Both dermatologists advised caution when using multiple strong actives together, as over-layering can lead to irritation and weaken the skin barrier.

Lao-Ang said beginners and those with sensitive skin should avoid combining retinol with hydroxy acids, vitamin C, or hydroquinone in the same routine since they can destabilize one another and irritate sensitive skin. Instead, these ingredients can be separated by time of day, such as using vitamin C in the morning and retinoids at night.

Similarly, ingredients like retinoids should also not be used together with AHAs, BHAs, or benzoyl peroxide, as it can reduce the former’s effectiveness while increasing dryness and irritation.

When paired correctly, certain ingredients can complement each other and improve results. Antioxidants like Vitamin C work synergistically with morning sunscreen to build an enhanced shield against environmental damage.

For improving texture and preventing signs of aging, she also recommended balancing retinoids with gentler ingredients such as niacinamide, cica, centella asiatica, ceramides, and hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

Hyaluronic acid and exfoliating acids also complement barrier repair creams, allowing you to shed dead skin cells without stripping away vital moisture.

To keep things simple, Dr. Diño-Yanga advises separating strong actives by the time of day rather than layering everything into a single step.

“My general rule for patients: separate your strong actives by time of day rather than trying to layer everything into one routine. Antioxidants and SPF belong in the morning; retinoids and acids belong at night,” she said.

Both dermatologists emphasized that skincare is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Overall formulation also matters just as much as key ingredients—fragrances, preservatives, and conflicting active blends can still irritate skin even if a single component seems gentle.

Ultimately, effective skincare requires realistic expectations and a healthy dose of patience. Diño-Yanga dispels the widespread myth that skin becomes “addicted” to retinol, clarifying that stopping its use won’t cause sudden, accelerated aging; your skin simply returns to its natural aging rate.

“I think this myth genuinely keeps people away from ingredients that are well-studied, well-understood, and effective, out of a fear that isn’t backed by any real evidence. That’s the real cost of the myth, not that people age faster, but that they age without the tools that could have helped them,” she told L!fe.

Lao-Ang noted that the right ingredients, procedures when needed, and healthy lifestyle habits all play a role in maintaining skin health.

“Aging is really inevitable. Everyone ages, everyone matures. It’s just a matter of knowing how to take good care of yourself,” she said.

Must-Have Skincare Essentials for Glowing Skin – ThePrint – ANIPressReleases

BusinessWire India

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 1: Summer heat, humidity, and strong sunlight can affect how your skin behaves. Sweat, dust, and UV exposure may lead to oiliness, tanning, breakouts, and dullness. Building a simple summer vanity with the right skincare essentials and healthy habits can help keep your skin fresh, protected, and glowing even during the hottest days.

1. Sunscreen is your non-negotiable step

Daily sun exposure can lead to tanning, dark spots, and premature ageing, making sunscreen the most important step in any summer routine. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it to the face, neck, and other exposed areas 15-20 minutes before stepping outdoors. Reapply every two to three hours, especially if you are sweating or spending extended time in the sun.

Products that combine sun protection with skincare benefits can also simplify your routine. For instance, NIVEA Luminous Even Day Cream SPF 50 helps protect skin with UVA/UVB filters, while Thiamidol works to target dark spots at the source. With hyaluronic acid for hydration and up to 12-hour oil control, it helps maintain a fresh, even-looking complexion during hot and humid weather. It’s a perfect mix of moisturiser & sun protection.

2. Gentle cleansing keeps skin clear

Summer weather increases sweat and oil production, which can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Washing your face twice a day with a mild cleanser helps remove sweat, sunscreen, and pollution without damaging the skin barrier. If your skin feels extra oily in humid weather, light gel-based cleansers can help keep pores clear while maintaining balance.

3. Stay hydrated throughout the day

Hydration plays a major role in maintaining healthy skin during summer. Drinking adequate water throughout the day helps maintain moisture levels and supports overall skin health. Include fruits with high water content, like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and berries, to keep your body cool and hydrated.

4. Wear breathable fabrics

What you wear can also impact your skin in hot weather. Tight or synthetic fabrics may trap sweat and increase irritation. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, which allow air circulation and help prevent sweat rashes and body acne.

5. Avoid peak sun hours when possible

The sun is strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. When possible, limit prolonged exposure during these hours. Using hats, umbrellas, wearing sunglasses, or seeking shade can reduce UV exposure and help prevent tanning and sunburn.

6. Exfoliate gently, but not too often

Sweat and sunscreen buildup can leave skin feeling dull. Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week can help remove dead skin cells and keep pores clear. Avoid harsh scrubs or excessive exfoliation, which may irritate skin already stressed by heat and sun.

7. Keep your routine simple and consistent

Summer skincare works best when routines are minimal and consistent. Focus on a few essential steps: cleanse, hydrate, protect, and treat specific concerns like pigmentation or acne. A thoughtfully curated summer vanity paired with healthy habits can help your skin stay comfortable, protected, and radiant all season long.

Why cocoa butter is a skincare must-have

Why cocoa butter is a skincare must-have

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African cocoa butter is gaining attention as a natural solution for softening skin.
Extracted from the seeds of the cacao tree, this butter is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants.
It has been used traditionally in many African cultures to keep skin healthy and moisturized.
With its growing popularity, many are looking at this natural product as an alternative to commercial skincare products.

Rich in essential nutrients

African cocoa butter is loaded with essential nutrients that promote skin health.
It contains vitamin E, which helps protect the skin from environmental damage.
The presence of fatty acids such as oleic acid and stearic acid helps retain moisture by forming a protective barrier on the skin.
These nutrients work together to keep the skin supple and hydrated.

Natural moisturizer for all skin types

One of the biggest advantages of African cocoa butter is that it is a natural moisturizer for all skin types.
It absorbs easily into the skin without clogging pores, making it perfect for both dry and oily skin types.
Regular application can improve the texture of the skin by making it softer and smoother over time.

Versatile uses beyond skincare

Apart from being an excellent skincare product, African cocoa butter has several other uses.
It can be used to treat minor burns, scars, and stretch marks owing to its healing properties.
It can also be used as a lip balm or hair conditioner because it tames frizz and adds shine to hair strands.

Eco-friendly sourcing practices

Many brands offering African cocoa butter emphasize eco-friendly sourcing practices that benefit local communities in Africa.
By working directly with farmers, these brands ensure fair trade practices that empower communities economically while conserving natural resources.
This sustainable approach not only supports community development but also provides consumers with high-quality products made from ethically sourced ingredients.

Must-Have Beauty Products For Women

Must-Have Beauty Products For Women

Photo Credit: Karola G via www.pexels.com

It’s hard to follow beauty trends nowadays, isn’t it? Unfortunately, social media has dictated a large degree of this fast-moving trend-based industry-by-any-other-name, resulting in an outsized influence of cosmetic procedures and surgical interventions over actionable, daily-routine activations that accentuate features you already have.

It’s a shame we’re here, and it’s a shame that so many have bought into the idea that lip filler is more than an extravagance. But there’s good news – and that’s that you and I aren’t alone. There is, indeed, a counter-swelling (no pun intended) of sustainability-focused product love – with ingredient transparency and product multifunctionality key conditions. If you’re feeling a bit stuck in a sea of scary surgicals, here you’ll find some essential categories of beauty products worth investing in right now, from wellness-driven skincare to daily makeup staples.

Clean & Sustainable Skincare Essentials

As already briefly touched upon, sustainability is a core expectation for many today – on a wider sense, and also specifically with respect to skincare. It is for this reason that many brands are working their way towards eco-friendliness, whether by shifting toward eco-conscious formulations, utilising refillable or recyclable packaging, or simply reducing waste involved in the manufacturing process. All this exists under the umbrella of a still-nascent “clean beauty” movement.

Inside-Out Beauty: Supplements & Nutricosmetics

As far as actual aesthetics grows, it should come as no surprise that there has been a countercultural push against the invasive and active procedures that serve to alter, distort and otherwise transform.

One corridor of this push is the growing “beauty from within” trend, which sees more make-up addicts turning to supplements that support the skin, hair and nails – with a view to bolstering the natural and beautiful aspects they already possess. Through this movement, products like a dedicated hair growth serum are dominating shopping lists, alongside collagen powders and other hair-nutrient supplements that can boost long-term beauty in complementary ways to topical routines.

Makeup Staples That Do More

Another fundamental movement in modern makeup is that of multifunctionality. This goes back to eco-consciousness, where overconsumption (and the overflowing makeup bags that result) is an outsized and unwelcome presence in modern consumer practice. Modern makeup, then, is better as a multifunctional force; anything that multitasks is a powerful asset to your dresser, whether a moisturising foundation, a refillable palette, or a versatile glow kit that elevate your look without excess.

There’s always some rhyme and reason to new trends in makeup, and this year’s have been arguably more predictable than most. In a word where both cost and ecology concerns loom large – alongside a troubling ‘mainstreamification’ of look-altering procedures –, natural, multifunctional products done well win out.

Why black soap is a skincare must-have

Why black soap is a skincare must-have

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African black soap, a traditional skincare product, is making waves for its natural benefits.
Originating from West Africa, the soap is made from plantain skins, cocoa pods, palm leaves, and shea butter.
With its rich ingredients, African black soap promises to give you clearer, healthier skin.
Here are five amazing benefits of using this natural product in your skincare routine.

Deep cleansing properties

African black soap is famous for its deep cleansing properties.
The natural ingredients work to remove dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin’s surface.
This makes it an excellent choice for those with oily or acne-prone skin.
Regular use can help reduce excess oil production and prevent breakouts.

Exfoliation benefits

The texture of African black soap provides gentle exfoliation without irritating the skin.
It helps slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing a smoother complexion.
This exfoliating action can improve skin tone and texture over time.

Moisturizing effects

Unlike many commercial soaps that strip the skin of moisture, African black soap contains shea butter and other moisturizing agents that help keep the skin hydrated.
These natural moisturizers nourish the skin while cleansing it, making it suitable for all skin types, including dry or sensitive ones.

Reduces inflammation

African black soap has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm irritated or inflamed skin.
The presence of plantain skins and other botanicals helps soothe conditions like eczema or psoriasis by reducing redness and swelling.

Rich in antioxidants

Packed with antioxidants from its natural ingredients, African black soap helps protect your skin from environmental stressors such as pollution and UV rays.
These antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause premature aging signs like fine lines or wrinkles, keeping your complexion youthful-looking over time.
