Must-have skincare ingredients for every age group • PhilSTAR Life

Every now and then, a new beauty trend dominates our feeds—from must-have launches to formulas promising everything from glass skin to age-defying magic. It’s easy to get swept up when favorite creators swear by a product, but before adding that viral serum to your cart, ask yourself: Is it actually right for your skin—and your age?

Choosing skincare goes beyond picking a popular brand, believing bold marketing claims, or falling for pretty packaging and pleasant fragrances. The key to building an effective routine is paying attention and understanding a product’s ingredients.

If you’re wondering where to start, experts break down the science-backed ingredients your skin craves at every stage of life.

Embracing the journey of aging

Gone are the days when aging was treated like a crisis that needed constant fixing. Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang points out a cultural pivot, noting that people are finally ditching the fear of growing older and instead leaning into self-care that celebrates natural longevity.

“I think with the advent of an emphasis on the importance of proper skincare or taking good care of yourself, people are now more leaning towards embracing what aging really is,” she told PhilSTAR L!fe.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mai Diño-Yanga shared a similar view, saying, “Instead of treating wrinkles, laugh lines, or volume changes as problems to be erased, the pro-aging mindset treats them as normal, expected evidence of a life being lived, and it puts the focus back on skin health rather than skin ‘perfection.’ Skincare supports that by prioritizing function over correction,” she said.

She added that the focus is more on building healthy, resilient skin through proper care than aggressively treating wrinkles, emphasizing graceful aging over looking ageless.

Essential skincare ingredients for different ages

While you can build healthy habits at any age, early prevention creates the ultimate foundation for skin resilience. During the teenage years, puberty often brings oiliness and breakouts, making a minimalist approach best: a cleanser and sunscreen by day, paired with a cleanser and moisturizer at night. Salicylic acid or mild retinoids can be introduced to keep pores clear, but daily sun protection remains the absolute need.

In your 20s

Entering your 20s is the ideal window to establish habits that safeguard your skin long-term, Diño-Yanga, owner of Pacific Skin Bel-Air and MDY Skincare, said.

Both dermatologists emphasize that daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a strict, “non-negotiable” step to prevent premature photoaging.

As natural collagen production quietly begins to slow down, this decade focuses on early defense. Niacinamide helps balance oil and strengthen the barrier, Vitamin C delivers essential morning antioxidant defense, and gentle alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic or glycolic acid keep cell turnover smooth.

In your 30s

By the time you reach your 30s, skincare becomes more targeted toward maintaining barrier strength and smoothing early fine lines, Lao-ang noted. This is often the decade to transition from gentle retinol to stronger retinoids, including prescription tretinoin, based on your skin’s tolerance.

To complement these powerful actives, hydration powerhouses like peptides, polynucleotides, and ceramide-rich moisturizers take priority to keep the skin firm, plump, and deeply nourished.

Meanwhile, Diño-Yanga explained that as collagen production gradually declines, ingredients like retinoids can help support collagen and improve skin texture. She added that vitamin C and peptides can help protect and support the skin, while a ceramide-rich moisturizer and daily SPF 30 to 50 remain important to maintain the skin barrier and prevent further damage.

In your 40s, 50s

In your 40s and 50s, natural collagen loss accelerates, cell turnover slows, and dryness becomes far more common due to hormonal shifts like perimenopause. Barrier repair and deep hydration become the main defense, Lao-ang said.

Look for rich formulas packed with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and barrier-replenishing lipids like ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Antioxidants like vitamin C and exfoliating acids provide additional support.

Higher-strength retinoids and exfoliating acids still play a key role in boosting cell turnover, Diño-Yanga said, while tinted sunscreens offer necessary added protection against visible light that triggers stubborn pigmentation. Many individuals may also explore clinic-based treatments such as injectables and lasers, emphasizing that skincare should always be personalized based on each person’s needs and concerns.

Ingredients to use separately and those that work together

When building your daily routine, chemical compatibility is just as crucial as ingredient selection. Both dermatologists advised caution when using multiple strong actives together, as over-layering can lead to irritation and weaken the skin barrier.

Lao-Ang said beginners and those with sensitive skin should avoid combining retinol with hydroxy acids, vitamin C, or hydroquinone in the same routine since they can destabilize one another and irritate sensitive skin. Instead, these ingredients can be separated by time of day, such as using vitamin C in the morning and retinoids at night.

Similarly, ingredients like retinoids should also not be used together with AHAs, BHAs, or benzoyl peroxide, as it can reduce the former’s effectiveness while increasing dryness and irritation.

When paired correctly, certain ingredients can complement each other and improve results. Antioxidants like Vitamin C work synergistically with morning sunscreen to build an enhanced shield against environmental damage.

For improving texture and preventing signs of aging, she also recommended balancing retinoids with gentler ingredients such as niacinamide, cica, centella asiatica, ceramides, and hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

Hyaluronic acid and exfoliating acids also complement barrier repair creams, allowing you to shed dead skin cells without stripping away vital moisture.

To keep things simple, Dr. Diño-Yanga advises separating strong actives by the time of day rather than layering everything into a single step.

“My general rule for patients: separate your strong actives by time of day rather than trying to layer everything into one routine. Antioxidants and SPF belong in the morning; retinoids and acids belong at night,” she said.

Both dermatologists emphasized that skincare is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Overall formulation also matters just as much as key ingredients—fragrances, preservatives, and conflicting active blends can still irritate skin even if a single component seems gentle.

Ultimately, effective skincare requires realistic expectations and a healthy dose of patience. Diño-Yanga dispels the widespread myth that skin becomes “addicted” to retinol, clarifying that stopping its use won’t cause sudden, accelerated aging; your skin simply returns to its natural aging rate.

“I think this myth genuinely keeps people away from ingredients that are well-studied, well-understood, and effective, out of a fear that isn’t backed by any real evidence. That’s the real cost of the myth, not that people age faster, but that they age without the tools that could have helped them,” she told L!fe.

Lao-Ang noted that the right ingredients, procedures when needed, and healthy lifestyle habits all play a role in maintaining skin health.

“Aging is really inevitable. Everyone ages, everyone matures. It’s just a matter of knowing how to take good care of yourself,” she said.

Real Life Tested Recipes, How-To

Real Life Tested Recipes, How-To, and DIYs

I started my “mom blog” when my kids were little, which seems like eons ago. My goals were two-fold: write out my real life tested recipes and how-to guides for my kids and family, and document my journey toward a more simple life.

I tackled one thing in my house at a time in order to learn how to make it myself (multi-purpose cleaner, floor cleaner, shampoo bars, you name it). I wanted to learn age old skills before they passed away with the older generation.

Twelve years ago, you couldn’t find organic options in the stores. And you couldn’t find many websites that taught you the step-by-step process of how to make things for yourself. I really had to test, change my recipes, test, and change again. This is why I have multiple deodorant recipes for example, because my husband can’t use baking soda, but I can. Many of you are like that as well.

Now, fast forward 12 years and you can find a lot of organic options and a plethora of products that claim to be all natural and healthy. The problem is that most of those products still have ingredients that are very toxic and even cancerous, even though they claim to be natural. You really have to know ingredients!

On top of that, AI is at the top of everyone’s search. It takes ingredients from 20 different recipes it randomly finds online and puts them into one, giving you something completely out of context and untested. My little rant: AI is putting blogs like mine on the 3rd and 20th pages of searches. People are believing its programmed bias instead of knowing the source. It’s very important to know your source for information. Always.

So, what do we do when a lot of products claim to be healthy, yet still have 32 ingredients that call for a deep internet search to understand, and AI is giving us recipes or ingredient opinions that are not curated by someone you can trust?

THE ANSWER?

Stick to those you know and can trust!

Make a list of your favorite websites, because they will be filtered out of your inbox, and you may forget they exist.

I’m happy to be able to provide recipe for food, soap making, cleaning products, and herbal remedies that we’ve used in our household for over 20 years. You KNOW that you’re making something that works and you KNOW that it will be healthy, no corners cut, no toxic ingredients added.

Here are some examples of categories I’ve been working on over the years:

Real Food Recipes

We have to eat every day, but as I ask my kids, “Are you putting fuel in the car?” I think enjoying food is a wonderful thing, but you can also provide your body the nourishment that it needs at the same time. If you keep putting junk in the fuel tank, your car won’t run very well for long. In the same way, what we eat effects everything: our energy, skin, hair, nails…everything. Eat well without all the toxins!

Where Skincare Shoppers Can Find Premium Products for Less – Hollywood Life

Premium skincare is a part of many individuals’ daily routines, but rising prices are making consumers become more strategic in where they shop.

Many people start their day with a skincare routine they have cultivated to address their unique skin issues. Skincare is now considered a luxury purchase for those who have it as a part of their wellness journey. Cleansers, moisturizers, serums, sunscreen, and other targeted treatments are items that people regularly repurchase.

Rising prices for skincare products have made it harder to experiment to find products that fit into someone’s existing regimen. Shoppers don’t want to abandon taking care of their skin, so they have become selective about where they buy their products. They’re looking for affordable pricing for what they know works for their skin and the products they want to try.

Why Skincare Shoppers Are Becoming More Strategic

Skincare shoppers tend to be selective about the skincare they use, taking the time to be informed about ingredients and how they impact the skin. As consumers become more aware of ingredients, they are less likely to impulse buy, but instead be strategic in what they choose. They understand skin barrier health, hydration, active ingredients, oxidative stress, and the importance of sun protection.

Those who regularly use skincare understand how antioxidant serums work against free radicals, unstable molecules that damage the cells in the skin. They also understand the importance of skin barrier-support creams, SPF products, and exfoliating treatments.

Like with any wellness and nutrition product, people like to do research before introducing a new item to their routine. Skincare enthusiasts often look for search terms such as “what skincare brands do dermatologists trust” when researching skincare products. They want products they can use every day that support their long-term goals.

The Rise of “Smart Restocking”

Shoppers want to replenish their high-quality skin care products and avoid paying high costs. They already know what cleansers, SPF, moisturizers, eye creams, and treatments they use. Skincare users also know that many products need to be used consistently over time to have visible improvements to the skin. When they run out, they look to restock at affordable prices.

The concept of “smart restocking” is simple. A consumer restocks their tried and true products while they are on sale or through an online shop that offers discounts, such as DermStreet, which offers high-quality skincare products up to 30% of their MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price). For shoppers who regularly purchase products from brands such as SkinMedica, Obagi, SkinCeuticals, Jan Marini, PCA SKIN, and skinbetter science, finding more competitive pricing can help make long-term skincare routines more affordable.

Common Skincare Treatments

Though everyone’s skin is different, there are common skincare treatments.

Daily SPF

SPF protects against both UVA and UVB rays, preventing premature aging and dark spots.

Antioxidant Serums

Antioxidant serums stop the damage of free radicals, which are molecules that are missing an electron, so they steal electrons from healthy cells. This is called oxidative stress, which causes premature aging, dullness, wrinkles, and more. Antioxidant serums help neutralize free radicals and help defend the skin barrier.

Moisturizers and Barrier Creams

These help with dryness, skin irritation, and a weakened skin barrier from environmental stress.

Acne and Texture Treatments

For people who struggle with rough texture, oiliness, and clogged pores, these treatments use acids for exfoliation and to address acne.

Meeting Your Skincare Needs

Shopping for premium skincare can be expensive, but online retailer DermStreet makes it accessible and affordable. It enables skincare enthusiasts to browse multiple categories in one place, receive customer guidance when needed, and gives consumers access to lower prices.

Prices and availability are accurate as of the time of publication and are subject to change without notice. Please check the retailer’s website for the most up-to-date pricing information.

life lessons: Chinese Proverb of the Day: “A woman gets thirty percent of her beauty from nature and seventy percent from…” — Life lessons on perception, grooming, presentation and why confidence is the best makeup

life lessons: Chinese Proverb of the Day: “A woman gets thirty percent of her beauty from nature and seventy percent from…” — Life lessons on perception, grooming, presentation and why confidence is the best makeup

Chinese Proverb of the Day highlights a traditional saying that reflects patterns of human experience, perception, and the way ideas of beauty and self-presentation influence everyday judgment. The proverb “A woman gets thirty percent of her beauty from nature and seventy percent from makeup” offers insight into how appearance is often shaped by both natural features and personal effort. It suggests that beauty is not viewed only as something inherited, but also as something developed through care, grooming, and attention to presentation. Many people interpret such proverbs as reflections of how society forms standards of attractiveness based on both innate qualities and external enhancement. These sayings are often rooted in cultural observation and passed down through generations. Over time, they encourage reflection on how confidence, self-care, and perception work together in shaping the way individuals are seen and understood in everyday life.

Chinese Proverb of the Day — Why nothing is more beautiful than self-confidence

“A woman gets thirty percent of her beauty from nature and seventy percent from makeup”

Meaning of the Chinese proverb

Chinese proverb of the day highlights a timeless idea about human perception, self-expression, and the way beauty is often shaped through both natural features and personal effort.

Live Events

The first part of the proverb suggests that natural beauty alone is only a partial influence on how a person is seen. It challenges the idea that appearance is fixed or entirely dependent on genetics. Instead, it shifts attention toward the role of care, grooming, and presentation in shaping how beauty is perceived.
The second part emphasizes how personal choices and daily effort influence outward appearance. It suggests that practices like makeup, styling, and self-care play a significant role in enhancing or refining natural features. In this sense, beauty is not only something one is born with, but also something that can be developed and expressed through intention and effort.
Together, the proverb teaches that beauty is a blend of nature and nurture in appearance. What is seen on the outside is often the result of both inherent traits and the way individuals choose to present themselves, reflecting confidence, self-care, and personal expression in everyday life.

Why confidence makes you attractive

Confidence is often seen as the most powerful form of beauty enhancement a person can have. Unlike external makeup, which changes appearance temporarily, confidence shapes how a person carries themselves in every situation. It influences posture, expression, communication, and the overall impression one leaves on others. When someone feels confident, it naturally reflects in their smile, body language, and energy, making them appear more attractive without any external effort. This idea suggests that true beauty is not only about physical features but also about how comfortable and secure a person feels within themselves. Confidence helps reduce insecurity and self-doubt, allowing individuality to shine through more clearly. In many ways, it acts like an invisible makeup that enhances natural qualities rather than covering them. Ultimately, when confidence is present, it elevates personality and presence, proving that inner strength often defines outer beauty more than any cosmetic product ever could.

Life lessons from the proverb

The proverb carries practical lessons about beauty, self-care, and how individuals present themselves in daily life.

  1. Effort enhances natural appearance
How a person looks is not defined only by natural features, but also by the care and attention they give to grooming, styling, and presentation.
  2. Beauty is partly self-created
While natural traits form a base, personal effort through makeup and self-care can significantly shape how beauty is expressed and perceived.
  3. Confidence influences appearance
When individuals feel confident in how they present themselves, it often reflects positively in their overall appearance and presence.
  4. Perception is shaped by both nature and effort
How others perceive beauty is a combination of inherent features and the choices people make to enhance or refine their look.

Why this proverb is still relevant today

In modern life, the proverb “A woman gets thirty percent of her beauty from nature and seventy percent from makeup” extends beyond physical appearance. It reflects today’s culture of self-image, social media presentation, and personal branding, where appearance is often carefully shaped, edited, and enhanced before being shared with the world. People are constantly influenced not only by natural looks, but also by trends, filters, grooming standards, and the curated visuals they see online.

The proverb encourages self-awareness about how beauty is perceived and constructed. It reminds us that appearance is not only determined by natural features but also by personal effort, style choices, and confidence in presentation. In many cases, how someone chooses to present themselves reflects both self-expression and social influence, especially in environments where visual impression carries significant weight. Ultimately, it teaches a simple but lasting idea: beauty is not fixed or purely natural. It is shaped through a combination of inherent traits and intentional effort, while confidence plays a key role in how that beauty is expressed and understood in everyday life.

English equivalent and related expressions

Other English expressions that reflect similar thinking include:

  • “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
  • “Presentation matters.”
  • “Confidence is the best makeup.”
  • “Take care of your appearance, it speaks before you do.”

Each of these highlights the idea that appearance, confidence, and self-presentation work together to shape how people are perceived, often just as strongly as natural features themselves.

The 21 winter skincare essentials that dermatologists use when dry weather wrecks their skin | Life and style

The 21 winter skincare essentials that dermatologists use when dry weather wrecks their skin | Life and style

The word “moist” is one of the most reviled in the English language. Some researchers even found that up to 20% of people squirm at the sound of it. The New Yorker once voted it its readers’ “least favorite word.” People magazine once called it the “most cringe-worthy word” and even rounded up a passel of Sexiest Men Alive to try – and fail – to rehabilitate it.

The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more.

According to our dermatologist experts, however, moist is one of the most important words, especially in winter. Dry, heated indoor air and the whipping winds outdoors tend to slurp all the moisture out of your skin. The result: chapped lips, ashy or itchy skin, rough hands and cracked feet.

During this time, “keep your skincare gentle and limited; winter skin is more delicate”, says Dr Oyetewa B Asempa, an assistant professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine’s department of dermatology in Houston, Texas.

What do dermatologists use for their own skincare, then? We asked our experts for personal recommendations on what they use head to toe: for the face, body, hands and feet. Here’s their guide to how to avoid being sucked dry in winter.

Meet our experts on dry skin

  • Oyetewa B Asempa, MD, FAAD, an assistant professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

  • Jeanine B Downie, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Montclair, New Jersey.

  • Lauren Payne, MD, MS, FAAD, a board-certified medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatologist based in New Orleans.

“I always do cleanser, serum, moisturizer and then sunscreen is always last,” says Lauren Payne, the dermatologist in New Orleans.

For a cleanser: “I love a glycolic, acid-based cleanser every day, but in the winter I can’t use it as frequently,” she says. Even in New Orleans’s mild winter, she continues: “So I may do that three times a week, and I’ll add in a hydrating cleanser on the other days.”

Ingredients she looks for in a cleanser: hyaluronic acid (HA), a humectant that can absorb many times its weight in water; and glycerin, a humectant that attracts water from the air.

An HA pro tip: “I always tell patients to make sure their skin is damp before they put anything with HA on because it binds to water,” Payne says. “If you put it on dry skin, it actually kind of takes some of the moisture out of your skin. That’s my personal experience. I used to use one, and I was like, why is it making my skin more dry?”

What’s in their skincare routine? Her go-to cleanser brands are La Roche-Posay Toleriane (which contains glycerin) and CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser (which has HA as well as ceramides, fats naturally found in your skin).

For those (remember: gentle!) exfoliation days, Payne goes with Glytone Mild Gel Cleanser, better for more oil-prone skin. Payne says the Glytone Mild Cream Cleanser is better for drier skin: “It should be pretty tolerable for even patients with sensitive skin.”

For dry and sensitive skin: Glytone Mild Cream Cleanser

For a moisturizer: How do you make winter makeup look good? It’s all in the moisturizer.

“It really doesn’t matter, makeup product-wise,” Payne says. You do not need to switch out your makeup in winter. “It’s whether your skin is moisturized enough. If, when you’re putting on makeup, your underlying skin is cracked or dry or flaky, nothing is going to stick or settle and look good on your skin.”

Lack of humidity leads to overall dryness, but indoor heat, chilly winds and even heat in the car “adds to the problem,” says Dr Jeanine B Downie, the dermatologist in New Jersey.

What’s in their skincare routine? Neutrogena Hydro Boost, a lightweight gel with HA. And La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, a light cream with ceramides and glycerin that easily sinks into skin.

Asempa picks “thick and luxurious” RoC Hydration+ Moisturizer, which has HA and amino acids that the brand claims can support collagen growth (that’s the stuff that keeps your skin plump and bouncy).

For a serum: Some people save serums for night-time use, but there’s no law that they can’t see the daylight. They can contain antioxidants to battle environmental stressors, as well as moisturizing ingredients that will really seal the deal of your soft, smooth skin.

What’s in their skincare routine? For “dermatologist-style hydration at a wallet-friendly price”, Asempa likes CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum with glycerin and dimethicone, which protects skin from water loss.

She also recommends La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum. “It’s a classic HA with vitamin B5 to repair the skin barrier,” she says. B5, aka panthenol, is an anti-inflammatory ingredient in skincare that has been shown to significantly boost skin barrier repair and hydration after 48 hours.

For an extra glow: It’s certainly not essential, but you can also try a vitamin C serum for “brightening” after moisturizing. “Thanks to antioxidant properties, it gives you a glow,” Payne says.

Not all vitamin C serums are the same. “There are so many over-the-counter products, but most of them are about 90% filler and actually 10% vitamin C,” Payne cautions. How do you know a product has an effective amount? “The big thing is, if it tingles when you put it on, it’s probably actually active vitamin C.”

For people with sensitive skin, she recommends La Roche-Posay Vitamin C12 Serum.

“Regardless of where in the country you are, I say sunscreen every day. Inside, outside,” Payne insists. “You should not skip sunscreen during the winter months,” adds Downie. “The SPF needs to be 30 or greater and it should be reapplied every three hours – more frequently if you are closer to the equator.”

It’s not just about the sun. Blue light from our computers and other electronic devices can increase skin aging and hyperpigmentation, Payne says.

She uses and recommends tinted sunscreens, because the added pigments, such as iron oxide, are especially effective at shielding the skin from blue light.

Finding a mineral sunscreen that doesn’t give skin an ashy hue is also a life goal for some. “I’m African American, so it’s tough for us to find a sunscreen that doesn’t leave that white cast,” Payne says. Some clear sunscreens also block blue light, especially those with niacinamide.

What’s in their skincare routine? She uses EltaMD sunscreens. The brand’s formulations “do seem to rub into a lot of different skin tones very well”, she says. “They have a clear, a deep-tinted and a combo version. For some reason, it’s the combo that works the best.”

Downie picks ZO Daily Sheer for its high SPF.

What derms use for dry lips

Photograph: Jorge Elizaquibel/Getty Images

Don’t forget sunscreen for your dry, wind-burned, chapped, cracked (potentially all of the above) lips.

Lip balms with SPF and petrolatum, AKA petroleum jelly, are ideal. The latter helps seal in moisture. “It really is one of the most effective occlusives around,” Asempa says. “People think it’s like putting gas on your face. That’s not what’s happening.” Triple-distilled petrolatum, the kind used by big brands like Aquaphor and Vaseline, is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic.

What’s in their skincare routine? Aquaphor lip balm in particular “applies nicely,” Payne says. She says you can apply lipstick first, then Aquaphor on top: “It doesn’t look cake-y.”

What derms use for the shower

Photograph: PeopleImages/Getty Images

You might be showering wrong in the winter. “It’s important to not over-exfoliate,” Payne says, in order to avoid too much moisture leaving your skin. “So for people who like to use loofahs and all that type of stuff, I wouldn’t recommend doing so frequently.”

You don’t have to stop altogether, she says, but “they shouldn’t be an everyday type of thing”.

“We love those extremely hot showers because they feel amazing,” Payne says, “but they are just soaking all the moisture out of your skin.” Her rule of thumb: warm water, not scalding hot, and 10 minutes at most in there; after 15 minutes or so, you start losing moisture.

She suggests using a body wash containing moisturizing agents such as ceramides or HA.

And then, once you come out of the water, she says: “You want to pat dry. You don’t want to fully dry off.” Leave skin a little damp before you apply any body moisturizer “so it can actually penetrate into your skin.

“Summertime is great for lotions, those lighter water-based moisturizers,” she says. “In wintertime, it’s time for creams.” Look for ingredients such as glycerin, squalene and ceramides.

Got really dry skin? She recommends layering products. “Put the cream on first and then seal it in with an Aquaphor or Vaseline, something that contains petroleum jelly, to really lock in the moisture.”

What’s in their skincare routine? “Roche-Posay’s Lipikar cream is really good, head to toe,” she says. “It’s not greasy and it doesn’t rub off on clothing like some creams do.”

Asempa is also a Lipikar fan: “It’s my ultimate winter moisturizer. My personal favorite.”

For those on a budget, she recommends Good Molecules Rich Cream, which contains ceramides. “It’s so thick and luxurious,” she says.

What derms use for dry hands

Photograph: Ekaterina Vasileva-Bagler/Getty Images

Go beyond just cuticle oil. “The big thing is making sure not just the nails, but the hands in general are moisturized,” Payne says.

What’s in their skincare routine? Heavier creams rather than light lotions. “I really like Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. It’s thick but it’s manageable and it really holds the moisture in,” she says. It’s fragrance-free and contains glycerin.

What derms use for dry feet

Even though your feet are snuggled up in woolly socks much of the winter, the cold, dry air can leave them looking ragged and feeling worse. Extreme dryness can even cause painful heel fissures.

Look for creams containing urea, according to Payne. She says: “Urea is what we call a keratolytic. It’s an exfoliator for thicker skin areas such as the hands and feet.”

The K-Beauty essence that gave me the dewiest skin of my life is 25% off

The K-Beauty essence that gave me the dewiest skin of my life is 25% off

The CosRx snail essence is the best new addition to my skincare routine this year. Despite years of trying, I’ve accepted the fact that I will simply never be a minimalist. This is true of my wardrobe, my apartment (my decor style is closer to your grandma’s attic than the curated bookshelves on Instagram), and my skincare routine. Undeterred by my dermatologist’s warnings to pare down and keep things simple, I’m always taking a more-is-more approach in pursuit of smooth, glowy skin. It has led to some disasters, sure, but it’s also how I stumbled onto CosRX’s Advanced 96 Snail Mucin Power Essence, or CosRx snail essence, put more simply. This cult K-Beauty product did the impossible and streamlined my routine.

If you’re unfamiliar, essences are popular in Korean skincare for their extra moisturising powers, and have made their way Stateside in recent years (SK-II’s is a more obvious, well-known favourite). They can range from a really watery texture to a thicker jelly, and are used after toning and before serums or moisturisers to add extra hydration. They also help your following products absorb even better.

CosRX’s bestselling Advanced 96 Snail Mucin Power Essence has a lightweight texture, but sits closer to the jelly end of the spectrum and feels a little sticky to the touch. Not going to lie: The texture takes some getting used to (mostly because the name of the product and the tackiness made me think of snails crawling on me — a lovely visual), but I got past it quickly once I saw the results. Literally overnight, it transformed my tired, dehydrated skin into a plumper, more dewy complexion I almost didn’t recognise. This was not the skin of someone who stays up late weeks on end to re-binge Sex and the City. I actually looked like a woman who sleeps.

The Snail Mucin Power Essence claims to target wrinkles, acne, dry skin, scarring, and overall brightness — and it’s no lie. I’ve been using it for a little over a month, and it has continued to significantly fade the hyperpigmentation left over from pre-Accutane breakouts, (my top skin concern). Not to mention, it has been great at fighting off winter dryness.

Now, about the snail. As you’ve probably gathered, the hero ingredient is snail mucin, a.k.a. snail slime. It sounds gross, but it’s a beloved K-beauty ingredient thanks to its superior healing properties, which help calm breakouts and fade. It also contains panthenol, a form of vitamin B5, to hydrate and plump up your skin, which explains my dewy complexion.

As for finally becoming a minimalist, I’ve found this so effective that I’ve been skipping other serums altogether. In the morning, I’ll just wash my face, apply the Snail Mucin Essence while it’s still damp, and throw on a simple moisturiser before applying makeup.

At night, I’ll do the same, adding in oil after the essence and swapping Skin Food for my lightweight moisturiser. I’ll use Pixi Glow Tonic every other night to exfoliate and will add in a vitamin C serum when I remember, but for the most part the Snail Essence is doing the heavy lifting when it comes to pigmentation and hydration.

I’m sure I’ll slip back into my old ways eventually and return to the hunt for the next best thing, but for now, this essence is all I need to keep my skin on track.

The Advanced 96 Snail Mucin Power Essence is currently 25% off at Cult Beauty, making it £20.99 instead of £27.99. You can also pick it up for £19.59 at LookFantastic and on Amazon.
