Think You’re Beating The Heat? Oily, Sticky, Breaking Out? Your Summer Routine Might Be The Problem

Summer skincare can get a bit confusing. The moment the weather changes, skin starts behaving differently – more oil, more sweat, the occasional breakout – and most of us instinctively try to “fix” it. We wash our face more often, switch to stronger products, or stop using moisturiser altogether because everything already feels greasy.

But what’s often missing is that these quick fixes can quietly weaken the skin over time.

A lot of this comes down to the skin barrier. It’s the outer layer of your skin that holds everything together, keeps moisture in, protects from environmental stress, and helps maintain balance. And in summer, this barrier is already working overtime.

Especially now, when summers are harsher and nights don’t cool down as much, the skin doesn’t really get a break. Add to that the constant back-and-forth between outdoor heat, pollution, and indoor air-conditioning, and it’s not surprising that skin starts feeling off, sometimes oily, sometimes dry, sometimes just more sensitive than usual.

In this kind of environment, a few everyday habits can do more damage than we realise:

Over-cleansing

Washing the face multiple times a day can feel refreshing, especially in humid weather. But frequent cleansing – particularly with strong or foaming face washes – can strip away the skin’s natural lipids. These lipids are essential for maintaining the barrier. Once disrupted, the skin often responds by producing even more oil, creating a cycle that’s hard to manage. A gentler approach, using mild cleansers with ingredients like aloe, neem, or tulsi, can help remove impurities without disturbing the skin’s balance.

Skipping moisturiser

One of the most common misconceptions is that oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser in summer. In reality, oil and hydration are not the same. Heat, sun exposure, and air-conditioning can all reduce the skin’s water content, even if it appears greasy. Skipping moisturiser can weaken the barrier over time, making the skin more prone to irritation. Lightweight, water-based hydration, such as gels or formulations with cucumber or fruit extracts, can help replenish moisture without feeling heavy.

Over-exfoliating

There’s also this urge in summer to constantly “clean” the skin – get rid of tan, dullness, clogged pores. Exfoliation helps, but only to a point.

When it becomes too frequent or too harsh, it can thin out the skin barrier and make your skin more reactive, especially in the sun. That’s when you start noticing redness or that slight stinging feeling.

Gentler exfoliation works better in the long run. Even traditional formats like ubtan, when used mildly, tend to be less disruptive and still effective.

Environmental stress

Summer isn’t just heat. It’s heat, UV exposure, dust, pollution, and then suddenly cold, dry air indoors. Your skin is constantly adjusting.

This kind of back-and-forth can be tiring for the skin barrier. Sometimes what helps is not doing more, but just adding a bit of calm back into the routine – ingredients that cool, soothe, and don’t overwork the skin.

Using unsuitable products

Products that work well in cooler months may not be ideal for summer. Heavy creams can feel occlusive in humid weather, while overly drying formulations can strip the skin further. Summer calls for lighter, breathable textures that allow the skin to function comfortably. There’s also a growing preference for fresher, more thoughtfully processed formulations that retain ingredient efficacy while being gentle enough for frequent use.

The larger shift

A common thread across these habits is the tendency to overcorrect. Summer skincare is often approached with the goal of controlling oil, removing tan, or managing sweat. But healthy skin doesn’t come from constant stripping or aggressive treatments. It comes from balance.

When the skin barrier is intact, the skin is better equipped to regulate itself—whether that’s oil production, hydration, or sensitivity. This is where skincare routines are gradually evolving. There’s a shift towards approaches that are simpler, more consistent, and better aligned with both the climate and the skin’s natural functioning.

In many ways, summer skincare is less about doing more and more about doing it right. Small changes like choosing gentler cleansers, not skipping hydration, or being mindful of over-exfoliation can go a long way in protecting the skin barrier. Because once that barrier is strong, everything else tends to fall into place.

If you're over 40 and still doing these 8 things, your skin is aging faster than it should

If you’re over 40 and still doing these 8 things, your skin is aging faster than it should

Remember that viral photo of Paul Rudd at 55 looking exactly the same as he did in “Clueless”? I spent an embarrassing amount of time zooming in on that picture, convinced there had to be some Photoshop trickery involved.

But here’s the thing that really got me: while some people seem to have discovered the fountain of youth, others hit 40 and suddenly look like they’ve aged in dog years.

The difference isn’t always genetics or expensive treatments. Sometimes it’s the everyday habits we don’t even realize are fast-tracking our skin’s aging process.

After diving deep into dermatological research and speaking with skincare experts, I’ve discovered that many of us are unknowingly sabotaging our skin every single day. And if you’re over 40, these habits hit even harder because our skin’s natural repair mechanisms are already slowing down.

1. You’re still sleeping on your stomach or side

This one hurt to write because I was a devoted side-sleeper for decades. But here’s what happens: when you press your face into a pillow for eight hours every night, you’re creating compression lines that eventually become permanent wrinkles.

Dermatologists call them “sleep wrinkles,” and unlike expression lines from smiling or frowning, these develop perpendicular to your natural facial muscles. The chest area gets hit too, developing those vertical lines that no amount of moisturizer seems to fix.

After 40, our skin loses elasticity faster, meaning it doesn’t bounce back from that nightly compression like it used to. The solution? Train yourself to sleep on your back, or invest in a silk pillowcase that creates less friction and pulling on your skin.

2. You’re using the same skincare routine from your 30s

Your skin at 40 is fundamentally different from your skin at 30. Collagen production has dropped by about 1% per year since your mid-20s, and hormonal changes affect everything from oil production to skin thickness.

Yet so many people stick with the same products they’ve been using for years. That lightweight moisturizer that worked perfectly at 35? It’s probably not cutting it anymore. Your skin needs richer formulations, active ingredients like retinoids, and targeted treatments for specific concerns.

The products gathering dust in your medicine cabinet aren’t doing you any favors either. Skincare ingredients degrade over time, and using expired products can actually accelerate aging by causing irritation and inflammation.

3. You’re showering in hot water every day

I get it. A hot shower feels amazing, especially on cold mornings or after a stressful day. But that steaming water is stripping your skin of its natural oils faster than you can say “anti-aging serum.”

Hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and accelerated aging. It’s particularly damaging to facial skin, which is thinner and more delicate than the skin on your body.

The fix is simple but requires willpower: lukewarm water only. Your skin will thank you by maintaining better moisture levels and appearing plumper and more youthful.

4. You’re still using makeup wipes

Convenience is tempting, but makeup wipes are one of the worst things you can do to aging skin. They require aggressive rubbing to remove makeup, which stretches and pulls at delicate skin. Plus, they leave behind residue that clogs pores and prevents your nighttime skincare from absorbing properly.

The tugging motion is especially damaging around the eye area, where skin is thinnest and most prone to wrinkles. Every aggressive swipe contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers.

Switch to a gentle oil or balm cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser. Yes, it takes an extra minute, but those 60 seconds could save you years of premature aging.

5. You’re not wearing sunglasses outside

Squinting in bright light creates those deep crow’s feet that become increasingly difficult to treat after 40. But it’s not just about the squinting.

The skin around your eyes is incredibly vulnerable to UV damage, and regular sunglasses don’t always provide adequate protection for this delicate area.

UV damage is responsible for up to 80% of visible facial aging signs. Those few minutes walking to your car or sitting by a window add up over time, creating age spots, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity.

Invest in quality sunglasses with full UV protection and wear them religiously, even on cloudy days. Consider them as essential as sunscreen.

6. You’re treating your neck like it’s separate from your face

How many times have you carefully applied serums and moisturizers to your face, only to stop right at your jawline? Your neck has fewer oil glands than your face, making it more prone to dryness and showing signs of aging faster.

The dreaded “tech neck” lines from looking down at phones and computers are becoming permanent fixtures for many people over 40. Combined with sun damage and neglect, the neck often reveals someone’s true age even when their face looks years younger.

Whatever you apply to your face should go on your neck and chest too. And apply products in upward strokes to avoid pulling the skin downward.

7. You’re still using your phone in bed

Blue light from screens doesn’t just mess with your sleep. According to experts, it can penetrate deeper into skin than UV rays, potentially accelerating the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

Plus, the position we hold our phones creates “tech neck” and increases those downward lines around the mouth.

I learned this the hard way when I switched to paper books before bed and not only slept better but noticed my morning face looked less puffy and lined.

8. You’re eating like you’re still 25

What shows up on your plate shows up on your face, and after 40, your skin is less forgiving of dietary sins.

High sugar intake creates advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that damage collagen and elastin, literally making your skin stiffer and more prone to wrinkles.

Processed foods, excessive alcohol, and not enough water all contribute to inflammation that shows up as puffiness, dullness, and accelerated aging. Your skin needs nutrients more than ever to maintain its repair processes.

Final thoughts

Realizing you’ve been unknowingly aging your skin faster than necessary can be frustrating. But here’s the encouraging part: skin is remarkably responsive to positive changes, even after 40.

Start with one or two changes that feel manageable. Maybe switch your pillowcase this week and lower your shower temperature next week. Small, consistent changes often stick better than dramatic overhauls.

Your skin at 40, 50, or beyond can still look healthy and vibrant. It just needs you to stop working against it and start working with it. Consider this your wake-up call to break those aging habits and give your skin the respect it deserves.

6 Surprising Mistakes You Didn’t Realise You’re Making

6 Surprising Mistakes You Didn’t Realise You’re Making

Many people invest time, money and effort into their skincare routine only to wonder why their skin still looks dull, irritated or prone to breakouts. The truth is, most skincare failures don’t come from a lack of products—but from small, everyday mistakes that quietly disrupt the skin’s natural balance. These errors often go unnoticed, yet they can stop even the most premium products from working the way they should.

If you’re constantly switching products or adding new ones, it may be time to rethink your basics. Here are the six hidden mistakes that could be holding your skin back.

1. Treating Only What You See

Most of us chase surface issues like redness, dryness or acne, but these symptoms are only reflections of deeper imbalances. Persistent concerns often arise from internal factors—fluctuating hormones, immune responses or disturbances in the skin and gut microbiome. Without addressing the root cause, topical products can offer only temporary relief.

2. Ignoring the Gut–Skin Connection

Your gut and skin are closely linked. When the gut microbiome becomes imbalanced, it can trigger inflammatory reactions that show up on the skin as acne, eczema, rosacea or unexplained sensitivity. A weak digestive environment can silently fuel recurring skin problems, no matter how elaborate your skincare routine is.

3. Damaging the Barrier With Too Much Exfoliation

Exfoliators are meant to brighten the skin, but overdoing them can backfire. Frequent use of scrubs, chemical peels or strong acids weakens the protective barrier layer. Once compromised, the skin loses moisture easily and becomes prone to irritation, breakouts and premature ageing. Gentle, controlled exfoliation is far more beneficial than aggressive routines.

4. Mixing Potent Actives Without Understanding Them

Popular ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide and exfoliating acids have specific pH levels and compatibility rules. Layering them incorrectly can neutralise their effectiveness or irritate the skin. Additionally, harsh cleansers or strong soaps can disturb the skin microbiome, causing imbalance and sensitivity. Understanding how ingredients work together is crucial for a safe and effective routine.

5. Expecting Results Faster Than Your Skin Can Adapt

Skin regeneration, barrier repair and collagen production all take time. Constantly switching products interrupts these natural processes and leaves the skin confused and stressed. A consistent routine, rather than a crowded one, is the foundation of healthy skin. Slow and steady transformation is more realistic than overnight miracles.

6. Overlooking Lifestyle Factors That Influence Skin Health

Your skin responds to everything—stress levels, sleep quality, diet, medications and daily environmental exposure. For instance, prolonged stress can increase cortisol, leading to excess oil production and inflammation. No topical product can fully counter lifestyle-related triggers. Balanced habits are just as essential as good skincare.

Healthy, glowing skin isn’t built on expensive products but on mindful habits and scientific understanding. By avoiding these six common mistakes, you can help your skin regain stability and achieve long-lasting radiance.

Makeup Expert Namrata Soni Disagrees With 10-Step Skincare Routine, Says ‘You’re Just Adding Sweat’ | Beauty News

Last Updated:November 27, 2025, 11:55 IST

Namrata Soni shares why it’s important to start a skincare routine at a certain age and explains why the popular ten-step beauty regimen isn’t practical in India.

Makeup artist Namrata Soni gets candid about skincare and beauty treatments

Celebrity makeup expert Namrata Soni has reignited the conversation around modern beauty standards, emphasising that global skincare trends don’t always align with Indian skin types and climate conditions.

During a discussion with ANI, she reflected on the changing expectations within the beauty industry and touched upon the widespread influence of Botox, fillers and digital filters in shaping today’s ideas of “flawless” skin.

Soni explained that India’s high humidity levels, combined with daily lifestyle factors, make elaborate multi-step routines impractical for many people. Sharing her professional perspective, she said, “We live in a country where the 10-step skincare routine does not work because we have a lot of humidity. So that means after step one itself, you’re perspiring. Imagine you’re putting that on, then you’re sweating, then you’re putting on another. So you’re like literally putting sweat between each layer of your skin. It’s crazy. Just keep it simple. Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen and eye cream at night. That’s all you need.”

Influence of Filters, Botox and Cosmetic Procedures on Beauty Expectations

Soni further pointed out how social media’s filtered perfection and accessible cosmetic procedures have reshaped what is now considered “normal” or “ideal” skin. According to her, the pressure to always appear camera-ready has increased significantly.

Addressing the impact of these technological and cosmetic enhancements, she stated, “We live in a world of Botox and fillers and surgeries. It’s so easy with lasers and CO2 to have that kind of skin today.”

Why Indians Age Differently: Soni Explains The Role Of Elasticity And Melanin

Soni also highlighted that Indian skin, which naturally contains more melanin and elasticity, often ages more slowly compared to Western skin types. Because of this, she believes that starting a skincare routine too early is unnecessary and can even be counterproductive.

She clarified her stance, noting, “Mid-20s is when you start a skincare routine. I mean, people have started at 16 and 14, which I don’t understand. I don’t understand girls going to Sephora and buying skincare at 14 and 16. But I would say like 23, 24. And it does not have to be a crazy routine. It just could be an amazing moisturiser meant for your skin type and a lip balm and a sunscreen.”

Creating Netra Mantena’s Royal Bridal Look in Udaipur

Most recently, Namrata Soni crafted the breathtaking bridal look of Netra Mantena, daughter of Orlando-based billionaires Padmaja and Rama Raju Mantena. Netra tied the knot with Vamsi Gadiraju, co-founder of Superorder, in a lavish wedding celebration held in Udaipur. Soni crafted a delicate yet regal makeup look that highlighted Netra’s natural beauty while perfectly complementing her striking red lehenga.

Namrata Soni’s Journey: From Industry Challenges To A Celeb Favourite

Renowned for her refined techniques, signature soft-glam looks and dedication to her craft, Namrata Soni has built an impressive career working with some of Bollywood’s biggest names – Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Twinkle Khanna and more.

In another conversation with ANI, she opened up about the initial hurdles she faced while entering a field that was once predominantly male-driven. Despite the challenges, she succeeded with the encouragement of leading stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Karan Johar, who recognised her talent early in her journey.

Over the years, Soni has earned multiple accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She also secured an IIFA Award for her acclaimed ageing makeup work in Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic film Om Shanti Om.
