Do you really need a 10-step skincare routine?

With interest in skincare surging more than ever, more complicated routines have become a common practice, where people use numerous products in an effort to deal with problems like acne, dark spots, dryness, and even skin ageing.

Meanwhile, the term ‘skinimalism’ has emerged as well, which focuses on using basic skincare products. Neither of these two approaches is better than the other. A skincare regimen works only if it is able to maintain a healthy skin barrier and address the specific issues people face.

Understanding the skin barrier

The skin barrier is the protective mechanism located in the outermost layer of skin that acts as the initial form of protection against any environmental irritants, allergens, and microbes. In addition, the skin barrier also ensures adequate hydration of the skin by reducing the loss of water from the skin.

Any damage to the barrier results in conditions like dryness, irritation, redness, sensitivity, and inflammation of the skin. Application of too many products or introducing new products frequently also leads to skin barrier damage, especially for sensitive skin.

Benefits of a minimal skincare routine

A minimalist skincare routine involving just three components, which include a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and regular application of sunscreen, is more than enough for the majority of people to achieve good skin health. Some benefits associated with adopting a minimalistic skincare approach include:

  • Elimination of the chances of skin irritation and interactions among different ingredients
  • Making it easier to pinpoint what causes irritation
  • Improves consistency in the skincare approach
  • Promotes a healthy skin barrier
  • Decreases chances of contact with fragrances and preservatives
  • Reduction of redness, dryness, and irritation

When multi-step routines can be helpful

A multi-step skincare regime does not necessarily imply something bad. Some skin conditions might be helped through the proper incorporation of other products into one’s routine. Acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and signs of aging usually require more than the essential three skincare ingredients. Some of the extra products might be:

  • Retinoids to help with photoageing and acne
  • Vitamin C as an antioxidant and skin toner
  • Niacinamide for barrier function and sebum production control
  • Azelaic acid to treat inflammation, pigmentation, and acne

It is essential to make sure that the products that are incorporated are for a particular reason and not just due to popularity.

More products do not always mean better results

One widespread misconception is that using more products promotes healthier skin. This is far from the truth, as using too many products on the face may lead to irritation, incompatibility issues, and weakening of the protective barrier.

The skin that has been exposed to several active ingredients may react to them rather than withstand them. Healthy skin does not necessarily need a complex skin care routine.

Finding the right balance

Many people believe that the more items used, the better the outcome will be. It has been observed that over-layering increases the probability of irritation as well as skin barrier dysfunction.

Most dermatologists advise using cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen first before anything else. An effective skincare routine does not depend on the number of steps used but on how well it protects the skin and maintains skin barrier functions.

A good routine must be personalised to meet the skin requirements of the individual. It is also important to recognise that skin health is influenced by factors beyond topical products. Adequate sleep, a balanced diet, proper hydration, and stress management play a crucial role in supporting skin barrier function and overall skin appearance.

Sara Tendulkar Skincare Routine: Sara Tendulkar proves you don’t need a 10-step routine for glowing skin- Here’s the minimal skincare trick she swears by |

(Image Credits: Instagram) We live in a world obsessed with 10-step skincare routines and product layering, which experts often consider a wrong practice. Well, Sara Tendulkar, known for her naturally glowing skin, agrees. The diva never indulges in heavy products and layering but believes in a minimal skincare approach. Somewhere leaning towards minimalism and consistency, her secret to glowing skin is refreshingly simple. Not many people know, but Sara Tendulkar is a biomedical scientist and nutritionist by training who views her skin through a clinical lens. She believes that the surface of our skin is deeply connected to our internal happenings. This is where the mindset needs to change.

In an interview with Hindustan Times Shop Now, she shed light on her skincare journey, including her issues fighting PCOS and how it affected her skin. She said, “PCOS brought its set of challenges, especially oily skin and breakouts. It made me more aware of how closely internal health and skin health are linked. I focused on consistency with eating clean, strength training, and simplified and gentle skincare and worked with dermatologists to understand what my skin actually needs rather than chasing quick fixes.”

Skincare for stress and fatigue: 5 ways to revive your tired skin

Understanding the meaning of “doing less,” she said, “My skin is sensitive and acne-prone, so I am very particular about what I use. I gravitate towards gentle cleansers, lightweight moisturisers, and ingredients that help maintain balance without stripping the skin.”

What does her routine involve? Her daily ritual usually revolves around cleansing, sun protection, and intense hydration. She said, “My routine is quite simple and consistent. I focus on cleansing well, keeping my skin hydrated, and protecting it from the sun by using sunscreen. I prefer not to overwhelm my skin with too many products, as I have learnt that consistently doing the basics well works far better for me than constantly experimenting.” The result? A dewy and fresh glow that looks effortless, rather than being overworked. Sara proves that in an era where skincare routines are now becoming more complicated, her simple approach is another reminder that minimal rituals remain the most powerful.

Sara Tendulkar’s Glow Secret Isn’t A 10-Step Routine, It’s Way Simpler | Beauty News

Last Updated:March 03, 2026, 10:56 IST

Sara Tendulkar shares her minimalist skincare philosophy, managing PCOS and sensitive skin with hydration, sunscreen and science-backed basics.

Sara Tendulkar’s simple routine proves less truly is more in skincare.

In an era obsessed with elaborate routines and viral ‘glass skin’ hacks, restraint feels almost radical. While the beauty world stacks serums and acids in dizzying layers, Sara Tendulkar takes the opposite route. Her approach to skincare isn’t built on trends or overnight transformations, but it’s rooted in science, patience and doing the basics exceptionally well.

The result? A steady, believable glow that looks like health, not highlighter.

A biomedical scientist and nutritionist by training, Sara Tendulkar views skin through a clinical lens. For her, what shows up on the surface is deeply connected to what’s happening internally. And that mindset changed everything.

When Skin Health Became Personal

Her journey wasn’t without hurdles. Speaking candidly about her diagnosis with Hindustan Times Shop Now, she said, “PCOS brought its own set of challenges, especially oily skin and breakouts. It made me more aware of how closely internal health and skin health are linked.”

Talking about how she balanced her skincare with PCOS diagnosis, she continued, “I focused on consistency with eating clean, strength training, simplified and gentle skincare, and worked with dermatologists to understand what my skin actually needs rather than chasing quick fixes.”

Instead of reacting to every flare-up with a new product, she chose long-term discipline. It’s a slower path, but a sustainable one.

The Power Of Doing Less

For Sara, skincare isn’t complicated, but it’s controlled. She said, “My skin is sensitive and acne-prone, so I am very particular about what I use. I gravitate towards gentle cleansers, lightweight moisturisers, and ingredients that help maintain balance without stripping the skin.”

Her daily ritual revolves around three non-negotiables: cleansing, hydration and sun protection. She added, “My routine is quite simple and consistent. I focus on cleansing well, keeping my skin hydrated, and protecting it from the sun by using sunscreen. I prefer to not overwhelm my skin with too many products as I have learnt that doing the basics well works far better for me than constantly experimenting.”

In many ways, her philosophy mirrors a larger shift in beauty – away from maximalism and toward mindful care. Think dermatologist-backed ingredients over DIY hacks. Barrier repair over exfoliation overload. Consistency over chaos. Because sometimes, the most luxurious skincare routine isn’t the longest one. It’s the one you can actually stick to.

Makeup Expert Namrata Soni Disagrees With 10-Step Skincare Routine, Says ‘You’re Just Adding Sweat’ | Beauty News

Makeup Expert Namrata Soni Disagrees With 10-Step Skincare Routine, Says ‘You’re Just Adding Sweat’ | Beauty News

Last Updated:November 27, 2025, 11:55 IST

Namrata Soni shares why it’s important to start a skincare routine at a certain age and explains why the popular ten-step beauty regimen isn’t practical in India.

Makeup artist Namrata Soni gets candid about skincare and beauty treatments

Celebrity makeup expert Namrata Soni has reignited the conversation around modern beauty standards, emphasising that global skincare trends don’t always align with Indian skin types and climate conditions.

During a discussion with ANI, she reflected on the changing expectations within the beauty industry and touched upon the widespread influence of Botox, fillers and digital filters in shaping today’s ideas of “flawless” skin.

Soni explained that India’s high humidity levels, combined with daily lifestyle factors, make elaborate multi-step routines impractical for many people. Sharing her professional perspective, she said, “We live in a country where the 10-step skincare routine does not work because we have a lot of humidity. So that means after step one itself, you’re perspiring. Imagine you’re putting that on, then you’re sweating, then you’re putting on another. So you’re like literally putting sweat between each layer of your skin. It’s crazy. Just keep it simple. Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen and eye cream at night. That’s all you need.”

Influence of Filters, Botox and Cosmetic Procedures on Beauty Expectations

Soni further pointed out how social media’s filtered perfection and accessible cosmetic procedures have reshaped what is now considered “normal” or “ideal” skin. According to her, the pressure to always appear camera-ready has increased significantly.

Addressing the impact of these technological and cosmetic enhancements, she stated, “We live in a world of Botox and fillers and surgeries. It’s so easy with lasers and CO2 to have that kind of skin today.”

Why Indians Age Differently: Soni Explains The Role Of Elasticity And Melanin

Soni also highlighted that Indian skin, which naturally contains more melanin and elasticity, often ages more slowly compared to Western skin types. Because of this, she believes that starting a skincare routine too early is unnecessary and can even be counterproductive.

She clarified her stance, noting, “Mid-20s is when you start a skincare routine. I mean, people have started at 16 and 14, which I don’t understand. I don’t understand girls going to Sephora and buying skincare at 14 and 16. But I would say like 23, 24. And it does not have to be a crazy routine. It just could be an amazing moisturiser meant for your skin type and a lip balm and a sunscreen.”

Creating Netra Mantena’s Royal Bridal Look in Udaipur

Most recently, Namrata Soni crafted the breathtaking bridal look of Netra Mantena, daughter of Orlando-based billionaires Padmaja and Rama Raju Mantena. Netra tied the knot with Vamsi Gadiraju, co-founder of Superorder, in a lavish wedding celebration held in Udaipur. Soni crafted a delicate yet regal makeup look that highlighted Netra’s natural beauty while perfectly complementing her striking red lehenga.

Namrata Soni’s Journey: From Industry Challenges To A Celeb Favourite

Renowned for her refined techniques, signature soft-glam looks and dedication to her craft, Namrata Soni has built an impressive career working with some of Bollywood’s biggest names – Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Twinkle Khanna and more.

In another conversation with ANI, she opened up about the initial hurdles she faced while entering a field that was once predominantly male-driven. Despite the challenges, she succeeded with the encouragement of leading stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Karan Johar, who recognised her talent early in her journey.

Over the years, Soni has earned multiple accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She also secured an IIFA Award for her acclaimed ageing makeup work in Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic film Om Shanti Om.

Namrata Soni on modern skincare trends

10-step Routine Does Not Work: Celebrity Makeup Artist Namrata Soni’s Hot Take on Modern Skincare Trends

Celebrity makeup artist Namrata Soni sparked a vital conversation on modern-day beauty standards, stressing that India’s weather conditions, lifestyles, and skin types may have made the much-followed “10-step skincare routine” unsuitable for many people.
In a conversation with ANI, Namrata, while reflecting on the industry’s evolving expectations, also mentioned the rise of “botox and filters”.
“We live in a country where the 10-step skincare routine does not work because we have a lot of humidity. So that means after step one itself, you’re perspiring. Imagine you’re putting that on, then you’re sweating, then you’re putting on another. So you’re like literally putting sweat between each layer of your skin. It’s crazy. Just keep it simple. Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, and eye cream at night. That’s all you need,” Namrata said.
Noting that heavy filter culture has created pressure on people to constantly appear flawless, Namrata added, “We live in a world of Botox and fillers and surgeries. It’s so easy with lasers and CO2 to have that kind of skin today.”
She emphasised how Indians with a lot of elasticity and melatonin in their skin don’t face the quick wrath of ageing, which she explained requires women to start a proper skincare routine from their mid-20s.
“Mid-20s is when you start a skincare routine. I mean, people have started at 16 and 14, which I don’t understand. I don’t understand girls going to Sephora and buying skincare at 14 and 16. But I would say like 23, 24. And it does not have to be a crazy routine. It just could be an amazing moisturiser meant for your skin type and a lip balm, and a sunscreen,” she said.
A renowned makeup artist, Namrata Soni, is known for working alongside several Bollywood celebrities like Sonakshi Sinha, Rani Mukerji, Sonam Kapoor, Twinkle Khanna, and others.
In the most recent, Namrata also created the stunning bridal look for Netra Mantena.
