Healthy beauty και minimal skincare backstage

Africa Month Hair Inspo: Protective hairstyles we're loving right now

5 Ancient African beauty rituals that inspire modern skincare

Long before skincare routines introduced serums, toners and trending ingredients, beauty across the African continent was rooted in ritual, heritage and the natural world. For generations, communities have relied on plant-based remedies, mineral clays and deeply symbolic practices to care for the face and body while also connecting with culture, healing and identity.

Across South Africa and many other African countries, these traditions were passed down through families. Mothers, grandmothers and traditional healers understood the powerful relationship between the land and the body. Today, as the global beauty industry embraces “clean” ingredients and holistic wellness, many of these ancestral practices are being rediscovered and reinterpreted.

Here are some of the most fascinating African beauty rituals and ingredients that continue to inspire modern skincare today.

Ichopho (pumice stone)

Ichopho, also known as a pumice stone, was and still is used in many South African households as part of everyday skincare and bathing rituals. Formed from volcanic rock, its porous texture makes it ideal for gently exfoliating the skin. Historically, ichopho was used to remove dead skin cells and smooth rough areas such as heels and elbows.

Long before body scrubs and exfoliating tools became popular, pumice stones were already a trusted method for maintaining soft, healthy skin. Today, the pumice stone remains a staple in pedicure treatments and spa routines around the world. In many ways, this stone represents one of the earliest forms of physical exfoliation, proving that effective skincare doesn’t always require complicated formulas.

Ukugquma (steaming)

Ukugquma, also known as steaming, is a traditional cleansing ritual that involves steaming the body with medicinal herbs. In many Southern African cultural contexts, the process involves sitting or kneeling over a container of hot herbal water while the body is covered with a blanket to trap the steam. The heat encourages sweating and helps open the pores while the herbal vapours promote relaxation and cleansing. Indigenous plants are often used to support wellbeing.

Beyond its physical effects, ukugquma also carries spiritual and cultural meaning. In traditional healing practices, steaming rituals are sometimes used for purification and restoring balance. Today, spa steam rooms and facial steaming treatments mirror the same principle: warm steam can cleanse the skin, boost circulation and promote renewal. What makes ukugquma unique, however, is that it represents a deeply rooted cultural practice where skincare, wellness and spiritual care are intertwined.

Ibomvu (red ochre)

Ibomvu, also known as red ochre, has long held cultural significance in African beauty and adornment. Traditionally mixed with water, oils or animal fat, the earthy pigment was applied to the skin and hair to create a rich red hue. The practice is perhaps most famously associated with the women of the Himba people of northern Namibia, who use a mixture of red ochre and butterfat, known as otjize, to coat their skin and hair.

Beyond aesthetics, ibomvu offered practical benefits. The mineral mixture helped protect the skin from sun exposure while the oils helped prevent dryness. More importantly, the pigment carried deep cultural symbolism. In many communities it represented identity, status and rites of passage. Today, mineral-based beauty products, like clay masks and tinted balms, reflect a growing appreciation for earth-derived ingredients that African traditions have used for centuries.

Charcoal teeth whitening

Long before charcoal toothpaste became a global beauty trend, charcoal was already used in many African communities as a natural way to clean teeth. Finely ground charcoal was applied to the teeth to help remove stains and polish the enamel. Its slightly abrasive texture made it effective for lifting surface discolouration while leaving the mouth feeling clean.

Now, activated charcoal has become a popular ingredient in modern oral care products marketed for whitening and detoxifying the mouth. What is often presented as a cutting-edge innovation is, in reality, a rediscovery of a centuries old practice.

@gumbimpume Our ancestors understood the importance of dental hygiene long before modern toothpaste! From rinsing with water after meals to using natural tools like amalahle (charcoal) and Isixubho (chew sticks), they kept their smiles bright and healthy. It’s a reminder to take care of ourselves with what nature offers. #DentalHygiene #NaturalCare #ZuluWisdom #OralHealth #AncientPractices #HealthySmiles #SelfCare ♬ original sound – MpumeSkincare|Eczema|Locs🇿🇦

Umhluzi (broth)

Umhluzi is a nourishing broth or soup often prepared with herbs, vegetables or meat, reflecting a holistic approach to wellness that recognises the connection between nourishment and healthy skin. While it is not a skincare product in the traditional sense, its role highlights a key principle: glowing skin often starts from within. Modern wellness culture has embraced similar ideas through collagen broths and nutrient-rich soups and drinks designed to support skin, hair and overall vitality.

@lindiswamgaguli Let’s make bobe broth it is my morning rituals, you drink on empty stomach. Here are some of the benefits: • Supports fat loss • Boosts metabolism • Improves gut health • Reduces bloating • Strengthens joints& ligaments • Supports muscle recovery • Helps skin tightening & glow • Rich in collagen & minerals • Helps balance blood sugar • Natural source of electrolytes #bonebroth #broth ♬ original sound – MaMvelase❤️🤭❤️‍🔥

Princeton Medspa Partners ("PMP") Expands Its Portfolio with Acquisition of Allura Skin, Laser & Wellness Clinics

Beauty’s Next Wave Sees Consumers Adding Aesthetic Procedures and Longevity Treatments to Regular Routines

Subject: SVY

  • Report from BCG and WWD Highlights “Optimizer” Consumers Reshaping the Beauty Market
  • 80% Say Beauty Is About How They Feel Physically and Mentally, Not Just Appearance
  • 75% Use AI to Research Beauty, with 1 in 4 Relying on It as Their Primary Source

BOSTON, May 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Beauty is expanding beyond traditional categories as consumers increasingly layer aesthetic procedures and performance and longevity treatments on top of their foundational routines. At the center of this shift is the beauty “optimizer,” a consumer turning to a wider range of solutions to meet their needs. About 70% are open to non-traditional beauty solutions, and roughly 80% say beauty is about mental and physical wellbeing, not just appearance.

The “optimizer”?now representing 6% of US adults, or approximately 15 million people?spent $3,000 on average in the past year across traditional beauty, aesthetic procedures, and performance and longevity categories. If this segment were to double, it could unlock more than $30 billion across the broader beauty market.

These are among the findings of a new report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), titled Consumers Are Shaping a New Age of Optimization in Beauty, based on an April survey of 5,000 US beauty consumers.

“Skin care, makeup, and hair care still anchor beauty routines, but consumers are increasingly layering aesthetic procedures, wellness, and longevity-driven solutions into the mix,” said Jenny B. Fine, Editor in Chief, Beauty Inc and Executive Editor, Beauty, WWD. “Today’s beauty consumer is highly informed, deeply results-oriented, and more willing than ever to move fluidly across categories in pursuit of optimization, efficacy, and long-term well-being.”

New Categories Deepen Engagement in Traditional Beauty

About 70% of optimizers say aesthetic procedures are a regular part of their routines. This drives greater engagement in traditional beauty categories, with 70% investing more in premium or medical-grade skin care, and 50% adding more steps or ingredients to their routines.

GLP-1s are also creating new beauty needs. Approximately 30% of optimizers report using them in the past 12 months. Of those who reported changes in facial volume, skin quality, dryness, or breakouts, about half are turning to more luxury or medical-grade skin care. Nearly 80% of those who reported sagging or loose skin have increased their use of fillers, injectables, skin tightening, contouring, or laser treatments.

Optimizers are also four times more likely than overall beauty consumers to use longevity and anti-aging supplements, and twice as likely to use beauty supplements.

How Consumers Research Beauty

About 75% of optimizers used AI in the last month to research beauty, wellness, or longevity, and 25% say it is their primary source. Among male optimizers, 40% use AI to build personalized beauty routines?2.6 times the rate of women.

Social media still plays a role in discovery, though trust is shifting. About 40% of optimizers discover products through influencer posts or social media ads, but only 1 in 20 cite social media as their most trusted source. Friends and family are the most common source of discovery, while medical professionals are the most trusted. Around 75% say they choose brands based on proven efficacy and scientific validation.

An Expanded Definition of Beauty

As optimizers engage with beauty differently than the average beauty consumer, brands and retailers should rethink how they attract this growing segment.

“Traditional beauty still anchors the category, but the definition is expanding,” said Pierre Dupreelle, a BCG managing director and senior partner, and global beauty sector leader. “Rather than rely on a few hero products, consumers are layering solutions across aesthetics, performance, and longevity categories to get the results they want. Brands need to pay attention to this shift as these consumers signal where beauty is going next.”

Skincare habits that actually work in cold weather

Skincare habits that actually work in cold weather

PICTURE: PEXELS/ SKIN CARE

Winter can be tough on your skin—cold air outside, dry indoor heating, and low humidity all work together to strip away moisture. The result? Tight, flaky, dull skin that feels like it needs extra care. The good news is that a simple, consistent routine can completely change your winter skin game.

Also see: How to use rice water for skin care

Here’s how to keep your glow all season long.

1. Switch to a Gentle, Hydrating Cleanser

Foaming or harsh cleansers can over-dry your skin in winter. Instead, opt for cream or hydrating cleansers that clean without stripping your natural oils.

Tip: Wash your face with lukewarm water—not hot water, which worsens dryness.

2. Layer Your Hydration (Not Just Moisturiser)

Hydration is key in cold weather. Think beyond moisturiser:

  • Hydrating toner or essence
  • Hyaluronic acid serum
  • Rich moisturiser to seal everything in

This layering method helps your skin hold moisture longer.

3. Upgrade to a Thicker Moisturiser

Winter is the time to go richer. Look for ingredients like:

  • Shea butter
  • Ceramides
  • Squalane
  • Glycerin

These help repair the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss.

4. Don’t Skip Sunscreen (Yes, Even in Winter)

UV rays are still active during winter, even when it’s cloudy. Daily SPF helps prevent premature ageing and protects your skin barrier.

Also see: Reasons to add sulphur to your skin care routine

5. Hydrate From the Inside Out

Cold weather often reduces how much water we drink. Keep your skin healthy by:

  • Drinking enough water
  • Eating water-rich foods (fruits, soups, vegetables)
  • Reducing excess caffeine

6. Exfoliate Gently (Less Is More)

Over-exfoliating in winter can damage your skin barrier. Stick to:

  • 1–2 times a week
  • Gentle chemical exfoliants (like lactic acid)

Avoid harsh scrubs that cause irritation.

7. Night Repair Is Everything

Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself. Use:

  • A nourishing night cream
  • Facial oils (if your skin is very dry)
  • Overnight masks once or twice a week

Wake up with softer, plumper skin.

8. Don’t Forget Lips, Hands & Body

Winter dryness doesn’t stop at your face:

  • Use lip balm regularly
  • Moisturise hands after washing
  • Apply body lotion immediately after showering

Small habits make a big difference.

Final Glow-Up Thought

Winter skincare isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing the right things consistently. Focus on hydration, barrier protection, and gentle care, and your skin will stay healthy, soft, and glowing even in the coldest months.

The 62 Best Skincare Products of the Year

Our faces aren’t inanimate objects, frozen and framed in a still life. Our skin stretches with every laugh, pulls with every frown, and is a living, breathing canvas, one kept healthy by nourishing skincare. But as more people go under the knife in the name of conservation (or restoration), the visible results from at-home serums and creams can seem fruitless in comparison. “Just as celebrities are becoming more transparent about what procedures they’ve had, skincare products need to become more transparent about the dosage of the ingredients and the efficacy of their products,” says Melissa Doft, a plastic surgeon in New York City and the founder of Doft New York skincare. “Patients are looking for ingredients that increase volume and radiance and help with the fine lines that are not addressed by a facelift. They’re looking for straightforward routines and quicker results.”

Cucumber_Sandwich

Cucumber Sandwich Bites (Grain-Free Options)

Every summer there are certain garden crops that produce in abundance. Cucumbers are one of those. Even if you don’t grow them yourself, they’re widely available at stores and farmers markets. These simple cucumber sandwiches are a creamy and fresh way to enjoy cucumbers!

Often served at tea parties as finger food, cucumber tea sandwiches are a classic. They’re also a practical and delicious choice for snack time, appetizers, or a simple side dish.

Cucumber Cream Cheese Sandwiches

Cucumbers have a really high water content, some fiber, and various nutrients. You’ll find vitamin C and K, magnesium, and potassium. They’re a great way to hydrate during the warm summer months. Not only that, but they add a nice refreshing crunch to dishes.

We use cucumbers a lot chopped up in salads or for pickles, but I wanted to try them in cucumber sandwiches too.

Supposedly authentic English cucumber sandwiches originated in 1870s British occupied India. The English created them to cope with the heat. Later on they became an afternoon tea time staple. And then Americans added the creamy sauce to go with the bread and cucumbers.

I added some microgreens for extra flavor and nutrition. Plus they add another pop of color and freshness.

Different Variations (Including Grain-Free)

For many years I didn’t eat any gluten or grains, but now I’ll eat them on ocassion. Classic cucumber sandwiches use crustless, white bread. This isn’t my first choice for several reasons, but they taste just as good on sprouted grain bread or sourdough.

If you want to skip the grains, then there are a few different options. We also like using butter lettuce leaves as a sandwich wrap. Another option is to keep it simple and just top the cucumbers with the cream cheese sauce.

I opted for cream cheese for the filling, but some recipes use mayo for a filling. If you need a dairy-free option, try mixing a little mayo with the herbs and seasonings instead.

Cucumber Sandwich Bites

Creamy and crunchy, cucumber sandwiches are full of classic flavor. Featuring flavorful seasonal ingredients and herbs.

Herbed Cream Cheese Spread

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese (or up to 1/2 cup)
  • ¼ cup green onion (thinly sliced)
  • 2 TBSP fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 TBSP fresh dill (chopped)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

For Serving

  • 1 cup microgreens
  • black pepper (freshly cracked)
  • butter lettuce leaves (optional, for wraps)

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African calabash is a natural beauty secret that has been used for centuries across Africa.
The versatile fruit, known for its hard shell, is packed with nutrients that can do wonders for your skin and hair.
From moisturizing to promoting healthy growth, African calabash has it all.
Here is how this age-old remedy can be incorporated into your beauty routine.

Moisturizing benefits of calabash oil

Calabash oil is extracted from the seeds of the African calabash and is widely known for its moisturizing properties.
It penetrates deep into the skin, making it soft and supple, without making it greasy.
The oil is rich in essential fatty acids, which help retain moisture and improve skin elasticity.
It can be used as a daily moisturizer or added to your favorite skincare products for an extra hydration boost.

Anti-aging properties of calabash extract

African calabash extract is packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals responsible for aging.
These antioxidants help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, while improving skin tone and texture.
Adding products with calabash extract to your skincare routine can help you achieve a youthful glow.

Versatile uses in skincare routines

Apart from moisturizing and anti-aging benefits, African calabash can be used in various skincare routines.
It acts as a natural exfoliant when mixed with other ingredients, like sugar or salt, making it ideal for DIY scrubs at home.
Its versatility makes it an ideal ingredient to experiment with different formulations according to individual needs.

Promoting healthy hair growth

The nutrients in calabash oil also promote healthy hair growth. It strengthens hair follicles, reduces breakage, and improves overall scalp health.
Regular application of this oil can lead to thicker, stronger hair over time.
For best results, massage a few drops of calabash oil onto your scalp before washing your hair.
