The Scents That Made Perfume Fun Again

The Scents That Made Perfume Fun Again

Years ago, I climbed into a giant, egg-shaped happiness detector. Technically, it was a biofeedback machine that was monitoring my brainwaves in real time, and rewarding the “goal” waves with a gentle bell sound.

Before I headed in, the tech told me to think of things that make me happy, because it’s a kind of shortcut to achieving the patterns we were shooting for. I settled in and started thinking of things I filed under that category.

Silence.

I wondered if the machine was broken or the electrodes needed to be adjusted, but before knocking on the door to talk to the tech a brief memory of my son laughing the week before flashed through my mind.

DING.

For the next fifteen minutes or so, I had a weirdly frank conversation with my own brain. Most of the things that made my brain “ring” weren’t achievements or things I’d checked off a list. They were sensory-rich moments connected to the people and places I love most.

You’re probably wondering what any of this has to do with perfume, and that’s a fair question.

One of the fascinating things about scent is that it has a direct line to the parts of the brain involved with memory and emotion – the ones that were generating the most resonant response in the biofeedback machine that day. A song, a photograph, or a familiar place can transport us back to another moment in time, but scents seem to do it with unusual speed and intensity.

Our sense of smell is wired a little differently than our other senses. Before sights, sounds, and touch are fully processed, they first pass through a kind of relay station in the brain. Smell, however, takes a more direct route into regions associated with memory, emotion, and even our stress response.

That’s why certain aromas instantly bring us home again. Fresh bread. Salt air. Pine trees. The smell of sunscreen and coconut on a family vacation.

Pleasant scents don’t just “smell nice.” They can evoke memories, feelings of familiarity, and a sense of comfort that’s hard to put into words.

Which brings me to Good Medicine Beauty Lab.

What Makes Good Medicine Unique

I started making my own perfumes years ago after discovering the health risks of conventional fragrance, but I’m not especially good at it, and I don’t have enough hours in the day to make everything from scratch.

For that reason, I’ve always kept an eye out for truly natural alternatives, and last year I discovered Good Medicine Beauty Lab. After I featured them in my holiday gift guide, they reached out and offered to gift me a large bottle of Love Letter and a mini set of all their perfumes to test.

When I said yes, I was not prepared for how much I would love these perfumes.

They’re not like the simple essential oil blends I’ve been mixing up in a roller bottle. They’re multilayered, living scents that evolve on your skin throughout the day.

Here’s what makes them stand out:

  • Handcrafted in small batches
  • Made with botanical aromatics and resins
  • Free of synthetic fragrance compounds
  • Designed to smell beautiful on skin, not just in the bottle
  • More layered and complex than basic essential oil blends
  • Available in mini sizes so you can explore the collection before choosing a full-size bottle

After testing all five perfumes with my daughter, I understand why the reviews are so enthusiastic. There aren’t any duds in the collection. Every scent is someone’s absolute favorite, and each one has a completely different personality.

My daughter and I had so much fun trying them together, comparing notes, and finding our favorites. It made perfume feel fun again and reminded me how much the little sensory details of life contribute to our experience of it.

Tips For Making Your Botanical Scent Last Longer

Most conventional perfumes are formulated to project strongly and linger for hours with the help of synthetic fragrance compounds and chemical fixatives like diethyl phthalate (DEP) and synthetic musks. DEP is a phthalate, which is a liquid plastic that has been linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, neurological issues and liver and kidney strain. (1) (2) Many synthetic musks have similar concerns, and bioaccumulate in the body and the environment. (3)

Good Medicine takes a different approach.

Instead of creating a six-foot cloud of scent, these botanical perfumes wear closer to the body. The experience is more intimate and personal – noticeable to you and the people close to you, but not everyone in the room.

How long they last depends partly on the fragrance itself and partly on your individual chemistry. With that said, there are a few tricks for getting your scent to linger longer.

  • Moisturize first. Fragrance tends to cling better to hydrated skin.
  • Apply to pulse points. Wrists, neck, and even behind the knees help the scent gently radiate.
  • Skip the wrist rub. Rubbing your wrists together can diminish some of the delicate top notes.
  • Keep a travel size nearby. A quick refresh later in the day is easy with one of the mini bottles. Personally, I’d much rather reapply a beautiful botanical perfume once during the day than wear a fragrance that relies on synthetic ingredients.

Now for the fun part: let’s talk about each scent, including the notes, overall feel, and who I think will love it most.

Love Letter

Best For: Coconut lovers, beach girls, romantics, and anyone who wants a scent that feels sunny and uplifting.
Top Notes: Magnolia
Heart Notes: Coconut
Base Notes: Vanilla

If you could bottle warm sunshine, salty air, and the feeling of a favorite summer memory, Love Letter would be pretty close.

This was the first Good Medicine perfume I tried, and it’s still my personal favorite. My husband loves this one on me, and I understand why so many reviewers describe it as nostalgic and mood-boosting.

The coconut and vanilla remind me of warm skin after a day at the beach, and the magnolia adds a light citrus floral note.

To me, Love Letter somehow manages to feel sweet without being sugary, and noticeable without being overpowering. It’s clean and balanced, but also luxurious.

One reviewer described it as “subtle while at the same time intoxicating,” and I think that’s the perfect way to describe it. Another said it smelled “like an instant mood boost,” which also rings true. There’s something undeniably happy about this perfume.

Although many people associate coconut with summer, I plan to wear it year-round. Then again, I live near the ocean, so my sense of what’s “seasonal” may be a little different. 🙂

Love Letter is available as a full-size 1.7 oz perfume spray, a mini spray that’s perfect for sampling or keeping in your bag, a 10 ml almond oil rollerball, or as part of a discovery set.

Free Bird

Best For: Women who love warm amber and vanilla with a smoky finish.
Top Notes: Rosewood
Heart Notes: Buddahwood, Cinnamon, and Jasmine
Base Notes: Amber, Vanilla, Vetivert, and Blonde Tobacco

If you could bottle a quiet evening on the porch, a favorite sweater, and the feeling of having nowhere you need to be, it would smell like Free Bird.

This wasn’t one of the scents I expected to love based on the description, but it surprised me. While Love Letter feels bright and beachy, Free Bird feels warm, grounding and intriguing. It’s complex in a way that’s hard to pin down, and I actually thought I didn’t like it at first. But once I warmed up to it, I really warmed up to it, and it’s now one of my top three favorites.

The amber and vanilla give it a soft sweetness, while the blonde tobacco and vetiver add an earthy, smoky depth that keeps it from feeling too sweet or traditionally feminine.

Free Bird has a slight edge – not overly masculine, but not overly feminine either To me, that quality makes it feel more balanced and interesting. If you’ve ever found yourself wishing women’s perfumes were less sweet and more complex, this one may be a good match for you.

One reviewer said her husband thinks it makes her smell like a “warm vanilla cupcake,” which made me laugh, while another called it “lovely, complex, and just perfect.”

Like all of Good Medicine’s perfumes, Free Bird is noticeable without being overpowering. It’s cozy, subtly sweet, and has a richness that unfolds throughout the day.

Free Bird is available as a full-size 1.7 oz perfume spray, a mini spray that’s perfect for sampling or keeping in your bag, a 10 ml almond oil rollerball, or as part of a discovery set.

Star-Crossed

Best For: Women who love warm, spicy fragrances and anyone looking for something distinctive and a little unexpected.
Top Notes: Sweet Orange, Tangerine, Jasmine, Gardenia
Heart Notes: Frankincense, Amber, Myrrh, Clove, Juniper Berry, Cinnamon, Rose
Base Notes: Balsam Tolu, Vetiver

Star-Crossed reminds me of a wool blanket by the fire, desert rain, and the feeling of getting lost in a good novel.

Along with Love Letter and Free Bird, this is one of my top three favorites. Ask me which one I love most and you’ll probably get a different answer depending on the day.

It feels warm and rich in a way that’s hard to describe. One minute I notice the citrus notes of sweet orange and tangerine, and the next I’m picking up the deep, resinous notes of frankincense, amber, and myrrh.

One reviewer compared it to “a wool blanket around your shoulders near a fire,” and I get that completely. Another called it “spicy, exotic, and completely unique,” which also captures it well.

If Love Letter is sunshine and summer memories, Star-Crossed is cozy evenings and rain on the windows. It’s comforting, grounding, and just a little mysterious, and I can see why so many people say they receive compliments whenever they wear it.

It’s available as a full-size 1.7 oz perfume spray, a mini spray that’s perfect for sampling or keeping in your bag, a 10 ml almond oil rollerball, or as part of a discovery set.

Dream Catcher

Best For: Dreamers, deep thinkers, and anyone who craves a little more breathing room.
Top Notes: Amber
Heart Notes: Myrrh
Base Notes: Frankincense

Dream Catcher is calming without feeling sleepy – more like a deep breath and a clear mind.

Unlike Love Letter’s sunny sweetness or Star-Crossed’s cozy depth, Dream Catcher feels more meditative. Amber, myrrh, and frankincense have an ancient, almost serene quality, which gives this perfume a very different personality from the rest of the collection.

One reviewer said people tell her she smells “like a spa,” and I can see why. Another described it as “very calming,” which also fits. To me, Dream Catcher is the scent I’d reach for when I want something subtle, timeless, and grounding.

It’s available as a full-size 1.7 oz perfume spray, a mini spray that’s perfect for sampling or keeping in your bag, a 10 ml almond oil rollerball, or as part of a discovery set.

Moon Shadow

Best For: Women who like floral-woodsy scents that feel light and fresh.
Top Notes: Persian Rose
Heart Notes: Sandalwood
Base Notes: Cinnamon & Clove Bud

Moon Shadow feels like crisp night air, rose petals, and quiet woods.

I told you there weren’t any duds in this collection, and I meant it, but this was the one scent that didn’t work with my particular body chemistry. Once it settled on my skin, it just wasn’t “me.” It smells great on my daughter, though, so I gifted it to her.

It’s floral and woodsy, but also somehow light and fresh rather instead of heavy. It’s also clearly beloved by the people whose chemistry it works well with – even if, in my house, that chemistry belongs to my daughter.

Moon Shadow is available as a full-size 1.7 oz perfume spray, a mini spray that’s perfect for sampling or keeping in your bag, a 10 ml almond oil rollerball, or as part of a discovery set..

Final Thoughts

I really do think the mini discovery set is the best place to start because these perfumes interact differently with each person’s chemistry.

Love Letter, Free Bird and Star-Crossed are my personal favorites. In their own way, they each make ordinary moments feel a little more special . . . and I didn’t even have to crawl into an egg shaped happiness detector to discover them.

Want a Fresh Summer Glow? These 5 Makeup Products Are All You Need

Want a Fresh Summer Glow? These 5 Makeup Products Are All You Need

Show Quick Read

Key points generated by AI, verified by newsroom

  • Summer beauty focuses on minimal, fresh, and lightweight makeup.
  • This approach provides comfort, quickness, and heat resistance.
  • Essential products include tinted sunscreen, cream blush, and mascara.

Summer beauty trends are moving away from heavy foundations and complicated makeup routines. Instead of layering multiple products, more people are embracing a lighter, fresher approach that feels comfortable even during long, hot days. Minimal makeup has become one of the biggest beauty trends this season, focusing on healthy-looking skin, lightweight textures, and effortless radiance.

The biggest advantage of minimal makeup is practicality. Fewer products mean quicker application, less maintenance, and fewer chances of makeup melting in heat and humidity. Whether heading to work, stepping out for lunch, or planning an evening outing, a few carefully chosen products can help create an easy, polished summer look.

Why Minimal Makeup Works Better In Summer

Heavy foundations, thick powders, and multiple layers can feel uncomfortable in rising temperatures. Sweat, humidity, and excess oil often cause makeup to fade, separate, or look patchy throughout the day. A minimal makeup routine focuses on lightweight formulas and smart product placement instead of full coverage. The aim is to create a natural, healthy glow that feels breathable and stays fresh for longer.

Five Products For An Easy Summer Makeup Look

Tinted Sunscreen

No summer makeup routine is complete without sun protection. A tinted sunscreen or lightweight skin tint helps even out the complexion while giving a natural finish. Unlike full-coverage foundations, these products allow the skin to breathe and maintain a fresh appearance. Applying a thin layer using fingers or a damp sponge can help achieve a seamless look.

Cream Concealer

Instead of using foundation all over the face, concealer can be applied only where needed. Focus on areas such as under-eye darkness, redness around the nose, blemishes, or uneven patches. This targeted method gives a more natural finish while keeping makeup light and comfortable.

Cream Blush

A cream blush can instantly brighten the face and create a healthy appearance. Soft peach, coral, and rosy pink shades work especially well in summer, adding a subtle sun-kissed glow. Many cream blushes can also double as lip colour, making them a practical multitasking product.

Brow Gel

Well-shaped brows can instantly make the face look more polished. A clear or tinted brow gel helps define and shape brows quickly without the need for pencils or powders, creating a natural yet put-together finish.

Mascara

A single coat of mascara can make the eyes look more awake and refreshed. Water-resistant formulas work particularly well in summer by preventing smudging from sweat or humidity. For a softer everyday look, applying mascara only to the upper lashes can work beautifully.

The Three-Product Makeup Routine for Extra Hot Days

Some summer days feel too hot for a full beauty routine. On such days, keeping it simple may work best. A combination of tinted sunscreen, cream blush, and mascara can create a fresh, healthy appearance in under five minutes while keeping the skin comfortable.

Keep It Simple This Summer

Summer beauty does not have to involve a crowded makeup bag or a lengthy routine. Sometimes, a handful of lightweight, multitasking products is enough to create a fresh and polished look that feels easy to wear from morning to night.

Priyanka Chopra’s beauty routine: A throwback to the skin secret revealed by her mother

Priyanka Chopra’s beauty routine: A throwback to the skin secret revealed by her mother

(Image Credits: Pinterest) Long before elaborate 10-step skincare routines and viral online trends, glowing skin often came down to simple, time-tested remedies passed down through generations. But when a celebrity-inspired skincare routine goes viral, people definitely give it a try, and today we’re dissecting the DIY remedy used by Priyanka Chopra and her mother.Over the years, fans have been eager to uncover the secret behind her luminous complexion, and one throwback revelation from her mother offered a glimpse into the beauty rituals that shaped the star’s skincare journey. In an old Instagram post, Dr Madhu Chopra shares her DIY besan-haldi face pack recipe that Priyanka swears by.

In the video, she says, “I have never used a face wash or soap on my skin. Occasionally, I go for scrubs to remove dead cells from my ageing skin. Thanks to this ubtan, I have always maintained healthy skin, free of pimples, acne, or pigmentation. My daughter and I use the same face pack for all our skin needs.” Let’s see how to make this DIY besan face pack at home. How to makeStep 1: Add 2 tablespoons of gram flour to a bowl, which will tackle your skin’s dryness.Step 2: Add some homemade cream with a spoonful of fresh yoghurt.Step 3: To prevent inflammation, boils, and acne issues, you can also add a hint of turmeric and blend everything with some cold milk.Dr Madhu Chopra also focused on the fact that it is best for people with dry skin. She said, “This recipe is for people with dry skin because my skin is very dry. It is also very easy to make and sticks to your skin like a mask. You can wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes. The outcome will be very good. You will see a difference in your previously tired skin, and after.” She continued and ended the video saying, “The skin below the eyes is very delicate. Don’t apply, don’t rub, don’t do anything here.” This is a gentle reminder that sometimes the most effective beauty solutions don’t come in luxury packaging, but some are rooted in traditional Indian beauty wisdom. The remedy highlights the power of natural ingredients and self-care, proving that age-old practices still hold power in the age of high-tech beauty products. As interest in DIY skincare continues to reign, this throwback beauty tip remains as relevant as ever.

The Best Summer Skincare Routine For Black Women: 5 Tips

The Best Summer Skincare Routine For Black Women: 5 Tips

  • Swap heavy creams for lightweight, hydrating formulas to combat humidity.

Source: Jacob Wackerhausen / Getty

Hot girl summer starts with healthy skin, and for Black women, that means keeping your glow protected while preventing the dark spots and uneven tone that can show up after long days in the sun. While melanin-rich skin offers some natural protection, summer heat, humidity, and UV exposure can still trigger hyperpigmentation, excess oil production, and skin irritation. The secret to maintaining that radiant, lit-from-within glow? A simple routine focused on hydration, brightening, and serious sun protection. So, what’s the best skincare routine for Black women in the summer? Here’s what to do, according to experts.

1. Use a gentle cleanser in the morning.

Source: Taras Grebinets / Getty

Start your mornings with a gentle cleanse. During the summer, your skin doesn’t need anything overly harsh.

NYC-based board-certified dermatologist Rose Ingleton told Allure during an interview on March 31 that she starts her day simply by splashing water on her face. A mild cleanser can also help refresh your complexion without stripping away its natural moisture. Skip aggressive scrubs and rough exfoliators, which can create irritation and increase the likelihood of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

2.  Use a Vitamin C serum to fight dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Next, reach for a vitamin C or antioxidant serum. Think of this step as your skin’s daily bodyguard. Antioxidants help fight environmental stressors, brighten dull skin, and support the fading of existing dark spots. Ingredients like THD Ascorbate, a stable form of vitamin C, are especially effective for melanin-rich skin because they help improve overall radiance without causing unnecessary irritation.

Ingleton told Allure that her go-to product is Future Bright Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum from her brand, Rose Ingleton MD.

“An antioxidant serum followed by an SPF each morning can ward off free radicals and prevent damage from the sun, especially the invisible kind present even on cloudy days,” she explained.

3. Hydrate your skin with lightweight products.

Source: VladimirFLoyd / Getty

As temperatures rise, it’s also time to swap out heavy winter creams for lightweight hydration. Gel moisturizers and water-based formulas provide plenty of moisture without feeling greasy or clogging pores. Look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which helps attract and retain water, leaving skin plump, smooth, and refreshed even during the most humid days. At night, she uses a gentle brightening cleanser to remove the day’s makeup and dirt.

Caroline Opene, medical director of the UCLA Health Skin of Color Clinic, echoed a similar sentiment during an interview with AARP in 2025.

Before washing her face at night, the skincare expert shared that she uses CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water to wipe off sunscreen, makeup and oil.

“A few nights a week, I use an alpha-hydroxy acid … toner for gentle exfoliation,” Opene further explained. “The rest of the nights, I’ll apply my prescription-strength retinoid tazarotene,” a light cream primarily used to treat acne, that keeps “breakouts at bay and reduces dark spots and has added anti-aging benefits.”

4. Use sunscreen.

Source: Marti Rossello Garrido / Getty

The real MVP of any summer skincare routine, however, is sunscreen. If you’re serious about protecting your glow, preventing hyperpigmentation, and slowing signs of premature aging, daily SPF is non-negotiable. Tiffany Clay, a board-certified dermatologist from Atlanta, told Allure that her personal favorites are Senté’s Invisible Shield Full Physical and the Glytone Hydra Lipid UV Mineral Sunscreen.

“They don’t leave a white cast on my skin, which I love,” she said.

Thankfully, today’s sunscreens are far more inclusive than ever. Invisible formulas leave no chalky residue and blend seamlessly into deeper skin tones, while newer mineral options feature warm tints that eliminate the dreaded white cast many Black women have struggled with for years.

Ultimately, the best summer skincare routine for Black women doesn’t have to be complicated. Cleanse gently, brighten strategically, hydrate consistently, and never leave home without SPF. Follow those simple steps, and you’ll spend less time worrying about dark spots and more time enjoying everything the summer season has to offer. Because the goal isn’t just surviving the summer heat, it’s glowing through it.

Hailey Bieber’s wellness routine might not be for everyone – here’s what to do instead

In an era where celebrity beauty brands are launched by the dozen, Hailey Bieber has accomplished something far more coveted: changing the way women take care of themselves. From glazed donut skin to peptide-packed lip treatments and the rise of “clean girl” minimalism, the model-turned-founder has become one of beauty’s most influential trendsetters.

The 29-year-old’s impact can be measured beyond sales figures. From popularizing “glazed donut skin” to “strawberry girl” makeup, Bieber has repeatedly turned personal preferences into full-blown industry obsessions. The result is a beautiful landscape increasingly shaped by trends that first gained traction on her Instagram feed and TikTok fan pages.

But Dr. Sherry McAllister, wellness expert and author of Adjusted Reality, believes there are longstanding downsides to the rising popularity of celebrity wellness routines.

• Hailey Bieber’s MAGA loving dad announces he’s retiring from politics

• Hailey Bieber admits to ‘uncomfortable and bizarre’ struggle with speculation over marriage

“As a healthcare provider, the concern is not the trends, but that each person has different healthcare challenges,” she explains.

Why Hailey Bieber’s wellness routine might not suit everyone

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror US, McAllister decoded how Bieber’s particular viral wellness trends might not suit everyone.

“Hailey Bieber has shared routines involving cold plunges, saunas, lymphatic drainage treatments, ice facials, specialized skincare protocols, Pilates, and highly curated beauty routines,” she says. “A patient suffering from a herniated disc in their back may find that Pilates flares up their condition due to nerve involvement.” She added that someone with cardiovascular issues or a history of strokes should strictly avoid cold plunges.

“The key is that people can often see celebrity influence and mistake its safety for their own situation,” McAllister remarks.

She further stated that celebrity wellness approaches are often “business-driven” and are driven by the agenda of increasing product sales.

“Optimization must fit the individual nervous system, lifestyle, and capacity, not someone else’s highlight reel. Whole-being care is highly curated for the person; it is not one-size-fits-all,” she notes.

Celebrities often operate with a level of support that most people simply don’t have access to -Credit:haileybieber/Instagram

TikTok’s beauty and wellness pressure machine

But the wellness culture flourishing on TikTok often comes with an unspoken expectation of perfection. Users are bombarded with videos promoting 4 a.m. wake-up calls, elaborate morning routines, strict supplement regimens, and meticulously curated self-care rituals, creating the impression that health is something to be optimized around the clock.

Critics argue that the trend can blur the line between well-being and obsession with self-improvement, turning everyday habits into yet another benchmark for success.

“The ability to juggle life stress, work, friends, and family is one part, but adding the pressure to look perfect and maintain an overwhelming list of to-dos can create anxiety and additional stress,” McAllister says.

The key to self-care is habit-stacking and consistency

McAllister instead advocates for habit-stacking and consistency. “The goal is consistency over time, not the intensity of trying to get everything right the first time. Hailey emphasizes hydration, walking, and a regular sleep routine. These are all achievable when small habits are improved over time,” she adds.

Celebrities often operate with a level of support that most people simply don’t have access to, from dermatologists, nutritionists, and personal trainers to makeup artists, assistants, and curated brand deals that shape their entire routine.

What looks like an effortless “everyday” glow or disciplined wellness schedule is usually the result of time, money and an entire professional ecosystem working behind the scenes. That makes it difficult—and arguably unfair—to compare those “perfect” routines to the realities of ordinary users trying to replicate them in their own daily lives.

“Focusing on perfectionism can make adaptation more difficult and can create nervous system overload rather than alignment,” the expert warns.

Simple wellness hacks to incorporate in your day-to-day life

The simple wellness hacks McAllister believes can be easily practiced by everyone include:

  1. Walking daily. Movement supports physiology, stress regulation, circulation, and cognitive performance.

  2. Protecting sleep. Sleep is nervous system recovery.

  3. Hydrating intentionally. Hydration supports every system.

  4. Getting adjusted: your nervous system functions at its best when it’s balanced and aligned.

  5. Posture resets throughout the day. Alignment influences breathing, energy, and movement quality.

  6. Practicing “micro-replenishment.” Two minutes of breathing, movement, stretching, or stepping outside can change physiology.

  7. Building consistency before complexity.

The Mineral Matrix and How it Changes Everything

I’ve tried some crazy health hacks over the years, but lately I’ve realized more and more how it’s the simple things that often make the most impact. Minerals are one of those foundational things. They’re not flashy, but we need them for hundreds of processes in the body.

Maybe you’ve struggled with low energy, poor sleep, stress, hormone imbalances, or simply feeling like your body isn’t functioning the way it should. If so, minerals may be a missing piece of the puzzle.

This article wraps up my mineral series and brings together everything I’ve covered about sodium, magnesium, potassium, and humic and fulvic acids. While each of these deserves attention individually, their real power comes from how they work together. Understanding this “mineral matrix” changed how I think about health, energy, and healing.

The Body Is More Electrical Than We Realize

Most of us think of the body as a biochemical machine. We learn about hormones, enzymes, vitamins, neurotransmitters, and nutrients. Those things are all important, but there’s another layer that deserves much more attention than it gets.

Every cell, tissue, and organ relies on electrical communication. The heart beats through electrical conduction. Nerves send electrical signals. Muscles contract because of voltage gradients. Even the brain functions through electrical activity.

Now I see the body as an electrical being first, and biomechanical second. This mindset shift has helped me understand why minerals matter so much. Electricity can’t travel through a vacuum, it needs a medium. When it comes to our cells, that’s water structured around minerals. Distilled water on its own doesn’t conduct electricity, but water with minerals does.

When we begin looking at the body through this lens, many health challenges start to make more sense. Fatigue, sluggish healing, low mood, poor stress resilience, hormone imbalances, and other chronic symptoms may not simply be biochemical problems. Sometimes they can also involve a loss of cellular voltage.

Voltage is like a life force. When our cell voltage is strong, our body can communicate more efficiently. When voltage drops, the body struggles to perform many of its normal functions.

This is one reason I prioritize minerals before many supplements or protocols. While there is certainly a time and place for targeted interventions, minerals help create the environment that allows the body to function properly in the first place.

Understanding the Mineral Matrix

To understand how minerals support the body’s electrical system, it helps to think of them as members of a team rather than isolated nutrients. Each mineral plays a unique role.

Sodium: The Charger

Sodium is often misunderstood, but it’s a critical foundational piece for electrical communication. It helps maintain blood volume, supports nerve signaling, and contributes to the charge outside of cells.

When sodium levels are too low, people can have symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, low energy, anxiety, or difficulty handling stress. When I’m feeling depleted, one of the first things I reach for is more sodium.

Magnesium: The Conductor

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions throughout the body. It activates ATP for energy, supports relaxation, and helps regulate the nervous system. Magnesium is like the body’s natural brake pedal. While sodium and potassium help create action, magnesium helps the body relax and recover afterward.

Without enough magnesium, countless processes throughout the body become less efficient. That’s why magnesium deficiency can show up in so many different ways.

Potassium: The Stabilizer

Potassium works primarily inside the cell. It helps maintain cellular voltage, supports insulin sensitivity, regulates heart rhythm, and balances sodium through the sodium-potassium pump. We need a balance of sodium and potassium together for this process to work right.

Unlike sodium, more potassium is not necessarily better. Our body ideally needs a much narrower range. That said, most of us still don’t get enough from modern diets.

Humic and Fulvic: The Enhancers

Humic and fulvic substances aren’t electrolytes, but I consider them important members of the mineral team.

They help transport minerals, improve mineral bioavailability, support the microbiome, and may enhance communication between cells and mitochondria. I often think of them as translators that help minerals do their jobs more effectively.

Together, these elements form what I call the mineral matrix:

  • Sodium charges
  • Magnesium conducts
  • Potassium stabilizes
  • Humic and fulvic enhance the entire process

Minerals Role in Hormones

Once I understood the mineral matrix, I began noticing how many body systems depend on it. For example, hormones.

Our bodies need energy to make hormones, and we can’t make energy without magnesium and ATP. Cellular membrane function and voltage really influences our hormone sensitivity. And our ability to clear hormones relies on healthy detox pathways, many of which depend on minerals as cofactors.

I’m not suggesting minerals alone solve hormone issues. Hormonal health is complex. However, I have personally seen improvements in hormone markers and overall well-being as I prioritized mineral intake.

Nervous System Support

The nervous system is another area where minerals play a central role. Sodium helps nerves fire, while potassium helps reset the nerve signal so it can fire again. Lastly, magnesium helps calm the nerve afterward. Without the proper balance of all three, communication becomes less efficient.

This matters because the nervous system is constantly evaluating whether the body is safe or under threat.

Many stress signals are obvious, like emotional stress or lack of sleep. Others are more subtle. Nutrient deficiencies, dehydration, blood sugar instability, and environmental exposures can all be interpreted by the body as forms of stress. Minerals help provide a safety signal to our body to help it function more smoothly.

Minerals and Sleep

Sleep is often one of the first areas where people notice improvements when they begin replenishing minerals. This is because magnesium supports relaxation and potassium helps stabilize nervous system activity. Sodium then supports healthy stress hormone rhythms and fluid balance.

I’ve noticed huge improvements in my sleep after prioritizing mineral intake and natural light exposure.

The Mineral Connection to Blood Sugar and Detoxification

Blood sugar regulation is another area where minerals have a surprisingly powerful influence. Potassium supports insulin signaling and magnesium improves insulin sensitivity. Sodium helps us keep the right glucose responses during stressful times.

As I’ve focused more intentionally on minerals, I’ve noticed more stable blood sugar and energy levels throughout the day.

One reason I find minerals so compelling is that they’re often a relatively inexpensive intervention compared to many other health strategies. They’re not the entire solution, but they provide a strong foundation.

The Mineral Matrix Role in Detox

Detoxification is another area where minerals shine. My views on what detox is and what it really means has changed over the years. I no longer view detox as something we do to the body. Rather, detoxification is something the body already knows how to do remarkably well. The goal is to support the processes that are already there and minerals help make that possible.

The liver relies on magnesium-dependent enzymes. Potassium supports waste transport at the cellular level. Sodium contributes to hydration, circulation, and lymphatic movement. Humic and fulvic acids help bind unwanted compounds and support their removal through the body’s natural pathways.

When viewed together, minerals become much more than nutrients. They become tools that support communication, transport, and energy production throughout the body.

Why We’re So Mineral Deficient in Modern Life

One reason I believe mineral deficiencies have become increasingly common is that modern life depletes minerals faster than ever. Stress is a major factor. Whether that’s stress from emotional challenges, environmental exposures, inadequate sleep, overtraining, or under-eating, the body uses minerals to respond.

The more stress we have, the more minerals we use.

Certain life stages dramatically increase these needs as well. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require enormous amounts of minerals to support both mother and baby. Sweating through exercise, sauna use, or hot climates also increases mineral losses.

Mineral Changes in Food, Water, and Environment

How we grow and produce food is also a problem. Modern farming and soil depletion means significantly fewer minerals in many foods. Produce has lower potassium and magnesium levels than ever before in history. Even if we eat a clean, whole foods diet, we’d have to eat way too many calories to get high enough nutrient levels.

Filtered water presents another challenge. Filters like RO and distilled water are devoid of the minerals our body needs to function and stay hydrated. While filtration is often necessary, when we remove minerals from water, we also need to intentionally replace them elsewhere.

Then there are environmental factors. Certain chemicals, including glyphosate, can interfere with how well we can use minerals. The result is a perfect storm. Modern life increases mineral losses while at the same time reducing mineral intake.

This helps explain why many people feel noticeably better when they begin replenishing minerals consistently.

What I Personally Do

Everyone’s health needs are a little different, but we all need nutrition in some way. Here’s what I personally do. First thing in the morning I grab my jar of salt water on my nightstand and head outside for some morning sunlight. I really prioritize sodium and aim for at least 5 grams a day, often more. I also salt my food to taste and opt for clean salt sources.

Additionally, I drink mineralized water throughout the day. This often includes trace minerals, humic and fulvic substances, and occasionally more salt. I continue to support minerals and eat whole foods throughout the day, stopping a few hours before bed. Staying hydrated is important but so is supporting good sleep and not getting up all night to use the bathroom!

For potassium, I focus on whole foods like fruits, root vegetables, and coconut water. I also replenish electrolytes after workouts and sauna sessions. Magnesium is one of the few supplements I take every day. I use Magnesium Breakthrough, magnesium baths, topical magnesium, and magnesium-rich foods whenever possible.

One lesson I’ve learned is that stress management may be just as important as taking minerals. Stress is one of the biggest mineral thieves, and supporting the nervous system helps preserve the minerals we have.

What I Use For the Mineral Matrix

The exact details will look different for everyone, but the principle remains the same: consistently replenish what modern life depletes. Here are some of the products I rely on every week or day to support my mineral status.

Minerals as Safety Signals

One of the biggest shifts in my health journey came when I stopped viewing the body as something that needed to be fixed. Instead, I now see it as something that needs support and is always on my side. Our bodies already know how to heal, detoxify, balance hormones, and regulate energy. Often, it simply needs the resources to do those jobs effectively. That’s why I think of minerals as safety signals.

  • Sodium supports blood volume and electrical communication.
  • Magnesium supports relaxation and recovery.
  • Potassium stabilizes cellular function.
  • Humic and fulvic substances help reduce burdens that may contribute to stress responses.

Together, they help create an internal environment where the body feels nourished, supported, and resilient. Once those pieces are in place our body can focus on healing.

Final Thoughts on the Mineral Matrix

If there’s one message I want to pass along, it’s that minerals aren’t optional, but foundational. Every cell and major system relies on them. And in a modern world that constantly depletes them, many of us simply aren’t getting enough.

For me, focusing on these minerals and substances have been one of the biggest needle movers for me in my health journey. And combined with sunlight, quality sleep, gentle movement, and stress reduction, minerals helped put my body in a safe place to heal. Minerals aren’t the entire answer, but they’re a big part of it when it comes to vibrant health.

How to make your beauty routine more eco-friendly?

“To create an eco-friendly skincare routine, focus on reducing your environmental impact. You can do this by using products wisely, reducing waste, and choosing ethically made items. To help the planet and your skin, choose refillable packaging, switch from single-use products, and opt for multi-purpose items,” Dr Blossom Kochhar, beauty expert and aromatherapist, tells Health Shots.

1. Start by paying closer attention to the products you use

Many typical skincare products contain ingredients that aren’t great for the environment. Think about how they’re sourced, how they’re made, and what happens when you rinse them off. Instead, look for naturally derived ingredients. Stuff like plant oils, botanical extracts, essential oils, and formulas that break down easily after use. These options are gentle on your skin and on the planet.

2. Then there’s the matter of packaging

The beauty industry generates a staggering amount of plastic waste each year. Most of it ends up in landfills or pollutes the ocean. Look for products made of glass, aluminium, or recycled plastic. Refillable packages are popping up everywhere, giving you the power to cut out single-use containers.

3. Consider simplifying your routine

The internet is loaded with 10-step skincare routines. But honestly, your skin probably doesn’t need all that. A gentle cleanser, a toner, a good moisturiser, sunscreen, and maybe one treatment product sometimes that’s enough. This approach keeps your skin and your conscience clear, since you’re not loading up your bathroom shelf (and the landfill) with stuff you hardly use.

4. Don’t forget how much water gets used in beauty routines

Both when you wash up and in the manufacturing of products themselves. Small steps like turning off the tap while cleansing, adopting water-saving habits, or choosing concentrated products can save more water than you might expect.

5. Support cruelty-free brands and companies

Supporting brands that conduct business ethically is another way to make a difference. Look for companies that don’t test on animals, that are open about where their ingredients come from, and that care about their full supply chain. Certifications can help you spot who’s genuine.

Eco-conscious beauty isn’t about perfection

Real beauty is about finding the sweet spot, caring for yourself while caring for the world around you.

  • Try not to get swept away by shiny new product drops or social media fads. It’s easy to collect more jars and bottles than you’ll ever use. Before buying, ask yourself what you really need and whether a new product will actually improve your routine or collect dust.
  • And here’s something simple but powerful don’t open a new product till you finish the last one. Those half-finished or expired bottles create waste (and waste money). Stick to what you need, use it up, and buy replacements only when it’s time.
  • Eco-conscious beauty is about making steady progress with little changes. Each choice, whether it’s a better formula, less packaging, or just saying “no” to impulse buys, helps the planet heal a little, and that’s something to feel good about.
