Ingredients to look for in your skincare products

PICTURE: PEXELS/ SKIN CARE

Walking down the skincare aisle or scrolling through beauty websites can feel overwhelming. With countless products promising glowing, youthful and healthy skin, knowing which ingredients actually benefit your skin can help you make more informed choices.

While everyone’s skin is different, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) says certain ingredients have been extensively researched and can support a range of skincare concerns, from dryness and acne to ageing and hyperpigmentation.

Hyaluronic acid for hydration

According to the AADA, hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular skincare ingredients because it helps the skin retain moisture, making it an excellent option for people with dry, dehydrated or ageing skin.

Benefits of hyaluronic acid include:

  • Improved skin hydration
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines
  • Enhanced skin elasticity
  • A smoother, plumper complexion

Because it attracts and retains water, hyaluronic acid can benefit most skin types, including sensitive skin.

Retinoids for anti-ageing and acne

The above-mentioned source notes that retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, are among the most studied ingredients in skincare and are known for promoting cell turnover and stimulating collagen production.

Retinoids may help:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin texture
  • Treat acne
  • Fade hyperpigmentation
  • Support collagen production

Because retinoids can cause irritation, experts recommend introducing them gradually and using sunscreen daily.

Vitamin C for brightening and protection

According to Cleveland Clinic, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from environmental damage while promoting a brighter complexion.

Potential benefits include:

  • Reducing the appearance of dark spots
  • Supporting collagen production
  • Brightening uneven skin tone
  • Protecting against environmental stressors

Many dermatologists recommend applying vitamin C serum in the morning before sunscreen.

Niacinamide for multiple skin concerns

The above source says niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, has become increasingly popular because of its versatility and suitability for many skin types.

Benefits of niacinamide may include:

  • Reducing redness and inflammation
  • Improving skin barrier function
  • Minimising the appearance of pores
  • Regulating oil production
  • Helping fade hyperpigmentation

Its gentle nature makes it a good option for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Ceramides for skin barrier health

According to the National Eczema Association, ceramides are lipids naturally found in the skin that help maintain the skin barrier and retain moisture.

Products containing ceramides can help:

  • Restore the skin barrier
  • Reduce dryness
  • Improve moisture retention
  • Protect against environmental irritants

Dermatologists often recommend ceramide-based products for people with dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

Salicylic acid for acne-prone skin

The AADA explains that salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) commonly used to treat acne and clogged pores because it helps exfoliate the skin and remove excess oil.

Benefits include:

  • Exfoliating dead skin cells
  • Unclogging pores
  • Reducing blackheads and whiteheads
  • Helping control excess oil

Because it penetrates oil, salicylic acid is particularly beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin types.

Glycerin for moisture retention

According to the above source, glycerin is a humectant that draws water into the outer layer of the skin, helping maintain hydration and supporting the skin barrier.

Benefits include:

  • Improved skin hydration
  • Strengthened skin barrier function
  • Relief from dryness
  • Support for healthy-looking skin

It is commonly found in moisturisers, cleansers and serums.

Sunscreen ingredients for protection

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to help protect against harmful UV rays that contribute to skin cancer, premature ageing and hyperpigmentation.

Common active ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are often recommended for sensitive skin.

Choosing what’s right for your skin

Not every ingredient works for every person, and introducing too many active ingredients at once can sometimes irritate the skin. Understanding your skin type and concerns can help you choose products that are more likely to meet your needs.

As the AADA advises, consulting a dermatologist can help you develop a skincare routine that is safe, effective and tailored to your individual skin goals.

Sunlight, Red Light, and How to Harness Light’s Benefits for Health

I’m not exaggerating when I say that light changed my life. This often overlooked wellness tool seems so simple, but it can have really impressive benefits. I’ve talked a lot about sunlight, blue light, red light therapy, and more over the years. Today, I’m putting everything into one easy place for you to learn all about the benefits of light and how it can positively impact your life too.

There’s some overlap in the following sections, but I’ve tried to separate the info into a few different categories. Many of these articles and podcast episodes are purely about light for health, but some of them include other strategies alongside light exposure.

Healthy lighting is just one tool in the toolbox. And while it can have some pretty drastic effects, other healthy habits like stress reduction, sleep, hydration, etc. are still important. Though I would argue that healthy light exposure boosts the effects of all of these.

The Benefits of Sunlight

Overall sunlight is a powerful healing tool. When it hits our skin (and our eyes!) it triggers our body to produce the hormone vitamin D. It helps strengthen the immune system, bone health, boost mood, balance hormones, and so much more.

Yet many of us are cooped up indoors the majority of the time, under flickering artificial lighting. Experts estimate children spend an average of 4-7 minutes outside. A recent poll showed preschoolers only go out to play once a week, or less on average.

Adults aren’t faring much better. Most adults report they spend less than an hour outside per day. And for over 18% of us it’s less than 15 minutes a day! Prioritizing getting outside into the light at various times of the day can make a huge difference in health. Here are some more compelling reasons to step outside and into the light!

Morning Light Benefits

Morning light has its own health benefits and deserves its own section in this article. When I was recovering from Hashimoto’s I’d set my alarm, head outside at sunrise, and fall back asleep in the natural light. Hopefully you have more energy than I did back then, but even if you don’t, morning sunlight can help! Morning light is unique because it’s a great source of red light and naturally helps balance circadian rhythms, cortisol levels, and more. It’s become a non-negotiable part of my morning routine!

Cortisol and Circadian Alignment

Sunlight exposure, especially watching the sunrise and sunset, is key for circadian alignment. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the circadian rhythm is our body’s natural 24-hour clock. It’s a system that regulates our sleep-wake cycle, hormones, digestion, stress levels, and more.

Light also plays a role in cortisol levels, aka our stress hormone. We actually want cortisol, we just want the right amounts at the right time. When we’re exposed to blue light at the wrong time of day and other stressors though, it can throw off our cortisol rhythms. Here’s how to use light to improve both cortisol and circadian rhythms.

Sunscreen and Sunlight’s Role

I’m not the biggest fan of sunscreen most of the time. Contrary to most conventional dermatologists and doctors, I think we need more sun, not less! That said, burning and skin damage is never a good thing.

Here’s a balanced approach that covers when sunscreen can be helpful and healthy kinds to use. Plus other ways to protect skin when outside and benefits of sunbathing.

Red Light Therapy

Morning and evening sunlight (at sunrise and sunset) offer free red light. Then there are red light therapy devices for a more targeted approach. You’ll find red light face masks, red light blankets and panels, and even red light toothbrushes for gum health!

Here are my thoughts on red light therapy, its benefits, and how to get it from the best sources.

Healthy Home Lighting

Many of us don’t think about indoor lighting when it comes to light’s benefits. However, the wrong indoor lighting at the wrong time of day can really sabotage our health efforts. LED lights flicker and cause stress to our nervous system, often too fast for our eyes to notice, yet our brain does.

Blue light at night from screens and overhead lighting tells our brain that it’s daytime and inhibits us from winding down for sleep. Here are some healthier swaps and solutions and what I do when it comes to indoor lighting.

More Podcast Episodes On Light’s Benefits

I’ve had the opportunity to chat with some amazing experts over the years on the Wellness Mama podcast. Some of my favorite episodes have been on the benefits of sunlight and how to use different kinds of light for health. I love talking about it so much that I’ve also done several solo podcast episodes on the topic.

You’ll find episodes on how to optimize sunlight exposure, its impact on mitochondria and energy, balancing hormones, and more.

Travelers take a shine to Korean beauty, wellness tourism

A viral video of a Japanese calligraphy teacher’s reunion with her famous student offered an interesting glimpse at one of Korea’s fastest-growing tourism trends.

In a YouTube video uploaded on June 28 by rising K-pop girl group RESCENE, Japanese member Minami visited her hometown in Chiba and reunited with her former calligraphy teacher. During their conversation, the teacher revealed that she had flown back to Japan that day, after undergoing a cosmetic procedure near Sinnonhyeon Station in southern Seoul, drawing laughter from the group.

Although the conversation was lighthearted, it showed one of the reasons why many foreign tourists choose to visit Korea.

For years, K-beauty was largely synonymous with cosmetics. Tourists would fill their suitcases with sheet masks, skin care products and makeup before heading home.

Today, however, an increasing number of visitors are booking appointments at dermatology clinics, receiving scalp treatments, consulting personal color experts, visiting pharmacies and participating in wellness programs that promise healthier lifestyles as well as improvements in appearance.

This growing demand shows the rise of wellness tourism, a type of travel that focuses on improving both physical and mental health. In Korea, this trend is unique because it mixes medical technology, beauty services, and lifestyle experiences into special travel packages that are hard to find in other countries.

Social media lead trend

Industry officials say social media has helped speed growth in wellness tourism. Thanks to beauty content on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, young people around the world have become familiar with Korean skin care, clinics and pharmacy products. Many tourists now plan their trips carefully to visit these clinics as well as traditional sightseeing.

“We have seen a noticeable increase in foreign patients over the past few years, in addition to our domestic customers,” a dermatologist operating a clinic in southern Seoul told The Korea Times.

“Many Japanese visitors come for laser lifting procedures, wrinkle treatments and pigmentation removal. Demand has increased enough that we are strengthening our social media marketing specifically targeting Japanese tourists.”

The shift is becoming increasingly visible in government data.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), foreign visitors spent more than 2 trillion won ($1.3 billion) here using credit cards in May, marking the first time monthly spending exceeded the 2 trillion won mark. The figure was a 67.1 percent increase from the same month last year and underscored the rapid recovery of Korea’s inbound tourism market.

Beauty and wellness-related businesses recorded some of the strongest growth.

Spending at skin care and massage businesses surged 153.9 percent from a year earlier, while dermatology clinics posted an 85.5 percent increase. Pharmacy spending rose by an even larger 206.1 percent, suggesting that visitors are increasingly combining medical procedures with purchases of skin care products, nutritional supplements and over-the-counter medicines.

The figures indicate that Korea’s tourism industry is generating higher spending per visitor, in addition to attracting larger numbers of visitors. Instead of spending most of their travel budget at department stores and duty-free shops, overseas tourists are increasingly seeking services and products similar to those found in the everyday lives of Koreans.

Beyond cosmetics

The changing travel pattern has also transformed pharmacies into one of Korea’s newest shopping destinations for foreign visitors.

Stores like Ready Young Pharmacy have rapidly expanded in tourist districts such as Myeong-dong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Seongsu-dong. They carry over-the-counter medicines, functional skin care products and health supplements. Unlike conventional pharmacies, these stores resemble health and beauty retailers where customers freely browse shelves but can also consult pharmacists about products that suit their needs.

“I had a skin treatment in southern Seoul in the morning before coming to Seongsu for lunch and shopping. I also stopped by a pharmacy to buy health supplements and skin care products,” a Chinese tourist visiting a premium pharmacy in Seongsu-dong said.

“Luxury goods are always attractive, but Korean medicine and health products are also known for their quality. Visiting these pharmacies has become one of the reasons I travel to Korea.”

Many of the products gaining popularity are not luxury goods but everyday items that Koreans have long purchased without much attention. Acne medication, scar ointments, functional cosmetics and nutritional supplements are now widely recommended through social media as essential purchases during trips to Korea.

The trend reflects how K-beauty itself has evolved. Instead of focusing solely on premium cosmetics brands, visitors are becoming interested in Korean lifestyles and daily wellness routines, creating new opportunities for retailers.

Beyond Seoul

The growing popularity of beauty and wellness tourism is no longer confined to Seoul.

The KTO data showed that spending on K-beauty and wellness by foreign visitors increased 38.4 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, while spending on medical tourism rose 33.2 percent.

Dermatology accounted for 55.7 percent of medical tourism spending, followed by plastic surgery at 21.1 percent, demonstrating how beauty-related treatments have become one of the biggest drivers of Korea’s medical tourism industry.

The rapid increase also suggests that overseas visitors are spending more on experiences rather than simply purchasing products.

“The global tourism market recovered to around 103 percent of its pre-pandemic level in 2025, while Korea’s inbound tourism reached 108 percent,” said Kim Young-mi, head of the KTO’s Tourism AI Innovation Division, during a tourism data seminar held in May.

“Korea’s tourism industry is growing not only in terms of visitor numbers but also in quality. High-value theme tourism is expanding while tourism spending is becoming more balanced across different regions.”

Kim said beauty and wellness tourism have emerged as one of the fastest growing sectors of Korea’s inbound tourism industry. She added that the trend is no longer concentrated in Seoul, with destinations like Jeju and Busan attracting growing numbers of visitors seeking medical services and wellness experiences.

The findings suggest that beauty tourism is becoming an effective way to encourage travelers to explore more destinations outside the capital.

A building directory in front of a commercial building near Nonhyeon Station in Seoul lists a range of medical and wellness clinics, June 30. Korea Times photo by Baek Byung-yeul

The government is now working to keep up that momentum.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the KTO launched the 2026 Korea Beauty Festival on June 24 to transform Korea’s globally recognized beauty industry into a tourism platform.

Held at HiKR Ground in central Seoul, the festival allows foreign visitors to experience various aspects of Korean beauty culture, including makeup, hairstyling, scalp diagnosis, personal color analysis and fashion consulting.

The event also connects visitors with nearly 800 beauty tourism products through partnerships with nine global online travel agencies, allowing travelers to book beauty experiences alongside accommodations and transportation through Sept. 30.

Officials hope the program will encourage visitors to spend more time in Korea while expanding beauty-related tourism.

“K-beauty is creating new possibilities,” Kang Jung-won, head of the ministry’s Tourism Policy Bureau, said during the festival’s opening ceremony. “It has evolved beyond the beauty industry to become one of Korea’s representative cultural contents.”

This is how the skincare industry has evolved

The beauty industry has undergone a dramatic transformation, fuelled by rapid technological advancements. To shed light on these changes, we’ve roped in Dr Elizabeth Briden, an internationally renowned dermatologist and key opinion leader in aesthetic dermatology.

Specialising in skin rejuvenation, medical and cosmetic dermatology and dermatologic surgery, Dr Briden offers valuable insights into the evolving skincare landscape

With skincare innovations constantly reshaping our routines, it’s crucial to stay informed about the latest developments. As we navigate the evolving beauty landscape, understanding the interplay between cutting-edge technology and skincare becomes essential. “During Covid, there were not many new cosmetic procedures (i.e. no new lasers, etc.) and few new skincare products being introduced.

Now, I am seeing more innovation for skincare, and younger patients looking to start preventing anti-ageing effects earlier. Social media plays a significant role in anti-ageing and skincare trends,” says Dr Briden, describing the major shifts in skincare and cosmetics over the past decade.

Glamour: What were some of the most significant changes or innovations at the start of the skincare revolution?

Dr Briden: Thanks to Dr Van Scott and Yu, who introduced AHAs [alpha-hydroxy acid] in the late 70s, new skincare options became available to dermatologists and patients. Before these discoveries, we had limited effective and affordable anti-ageing treatments with clinically proven results. Patients would come and ask me how to take care of their skin. Now, we have more effective topical dermocosmetics (AHAs, polyhydroxy acid [PHA], retinoids, antioxidants, peptides, SPF, etc.) and various professional procedures (peels, non-ablative lasers, microneedling, IPL, etc.) that allow for less downtime and minimal irritation than previous treatments. This truly revolutionised skincare through the professional, and was the foundation of skincare products coming directly from professional clinics to the patient.

Glamour: What is the impact of treatments like Botox, fillers and retinol on the industry and how have they influenced patient expectations?

Dr Briden: Patients have higher expectations regarding the results of the procedures. They are asking for less invasive treatments that are showing quick results with less downtime. They also expect that these treatments are more accessible and affordable. A good skincare regimen in combination with these treatments helps improve the overall skin health of my patients.

Glamour: How has the introduction of these advanced treatments altered traditional approaches to skincare and cosmetic procedures?

Dr Briden: Everyone is stared with a good skincare regimen, which helps to enhance the procedure outcomes and minimise the risk of complications. More patients are requesting and receiving anti-ageing treatment and products.

Glamour: In your experience, how have these innovations affected patient attitudes toward skincare and cosmetic procedures?

Dr Briden: Patients are more open to trying new procedures and skincare as they are more aware of ageing effects. Social media also brings more awareness in addition to misinformation regarding skin. Our professional, trained staff educates our patients on what works versus what does not.

Glamour: What are some emerging trends or technologies in dermatology and cosmetics that you find exciting?

Dr Briden: Most recently, I am excited about a new technology — microdipeptides — that has been shown in early studies to provide more sculpted, lifted, taut skin. What makes this peptide exciting is the size of the molecule, which is 2.5 times smaller than other leading topical peptides. The size matters because this will enable better absorption of this new benefit ingredient.

Glamour: How has the Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Institute played a role in shaping or responding to changes within the field?

Dr Briden: Our clinic partners with our patients on a comprehensive treatment and skincare regimen that is effective for their specific needs. Our team also helps educate and guide our patients in their skin health journey, ensuring that they get the most out of their skincare investment. We offer a wide range of anti-ageing treatments from minimally invasive to more comprehensive options. We have also dedicated a retail skincare area in our clinic for patients to purchase these therapeutic products.

Glamour: Is there a notable case or example where new advancements have had a particularly profound impact on one of your patients?

Dr Briden: Many of my patients have benefited from the AHA/PHA skincare products and chemical peels over 30+ years. One of my patients who was suffering from severe rosacea and was not responsive to conventional treatments, improved greatly with a series of AHA peels and home care products with PHAs. Patients with sensitive skin can be difficult to treat without causing additional sensitivity, but AHA peels and PHA home care products offered beneficial results. Her condition improved so she was able to discontinue all other drug treatments and she continues to see me once a year for a ‘touch up’ peel. Her skin improvement did impact her everyday life as she became more confident and thankful that she found a solution to her skin problem.

Glamour: How do you foresee the future of cosmetic dermatology evolving over the next five to 10 years?

Dr Briden: I foresee that skincare will be part of all my patients’ everyday skin health and that more-effective products will be introduced as future scientific discoveries should bring exciting new opportunities in skincare products and procedures. I am hoping that there will be fewer cases of skin cancer due to patients using SPF on a daily basis, since patients have started using SPF at an earlier age and more consistently. I also believe that since younger patients are more conscious of skincare this could mean that there will be different skin health needs in the future (a demand for less invasive treatments and more non invasive procedures).

Glamour: What advice would you give to individuals who are considering cosmetic treatments but are unsure about the best options for their needs?

• Do your research thoroughly and ensure that your information is from a credible source.

• Seek clinically proven ingredients

• Start early to prevent damage.

• For the best results, professional treatments should be combined with

a good home care regimen that includes daily SPF products.

• Any professional treatment should be performed by an adequately trained and licensed physician.

Beauty habits dermatologists wish everyone would follow

Beauty habits dermatologists wish everyone would follow

PICTURE: PEXELS/ SKIN CARE

With countless beauty trends dominating social media, it can be difficult to know which habits actually benefit your skin. However, South African dermatologists agree that healthy, glowing skin doesn’t come from expensive products or viral hacks—it comes from consistent, evidence-based habits.

From protecting your skin against South Africa’s harsh UV rays to keeping your routine simple, here are the beauty habits local dermatologists wish everyone would adopt.

Wear sunscreen every day — even in winter

If there’s one beauty rule dermatologists never get tired of repeating, it’s this: wear sunscreen every day.

According to the National Library of Medicine, South Africa experiences high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation throughout the year, which means sun protection isn’t only important during summer holidays.

According to recent South African sun protection guidelines developed by dermatologists from the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, daily sun protection helps prevent premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer.

Dr Barbara van der Westhuizen, a dermatologist at Tygerberg Hospital, recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapplying it every two hours when outdoors.

Keep your skincare routine simple

While social media may promote elaborate skincare routines, dermatologists often recommend taking a less-is-more approach.

Dermatologist Dr Dilshaad Asmal said using too many active ingredients can damage the skin barrier, leading to irritation, dryness and breakouts. Instead, experts advise building a routine around a few essential products: a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen and targeted treatments when necessary.

Consistency, rather than complexity, is what produces long-term results.

Never sleep with makeup on

No matter how tired you are, dermatologists say removing your makeup before bed should be non-negotiable.

According to Dr Dilshaad, makeup, pollution, sweat, and excess oil can accumulate on the skin throughout the day, potentially contributing to clogged pores, irritation, and breakouts. Cleansing before bed allows the skin to undergo its natural repair processes overnight and helps maintain a healthy skin barrier.

Moisturise regularly

Many people wait until their skin feels dry before applying moisturiser, but dermatologists recommend making moisturising a daily habit.

National Library of Medicine said moisturiser helps strengthen the skin barrier, retain hydration, and protect the skin against environmental stressors. This is particularly important during South Africa’s dry winter months when skin is more prone to dehydration and irritation.

Stop picking at your skin

Whether it’s a pimple, scab or blemish, picking at the skin can do more harm than good.

Dermatologists warn that picking increases inflammation, introduces bacteria and can lead to permanent scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation—especially in darker skin tones, where pigmentation changes may persist for longer.

Protect your skin beyond sunscreen

South African dermatologists stress that sunscreen is only one part of effective sun protection.

According to local sun safety guidelines issued by the Western Cape Government, additional protective measures include:

  • Seeking shade during peak UV hours (between 10am and 4pm)
  • Wearing wide-brimmed hats
  • Using UV-protective sunglasses
  • Choosing protective clothing when spending extended periods outdoors

These habits can significantly reduce cumulative sun damage over time.

Be cautious of skin-lightening products

South African dermatologists have repeatedly warned about the dangers associated with unregulated skin-lightening products.

Professor Ncoza Dlova, head of dermatology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, has highlighted the risks of products containing ingredients such as hydroquinone and potent corticosteroids, which can damage the skin and increase vulnerability to sun damage and other complications.

Experts recommend consulting a dermatologist before using any skin-lightening treatments or strong active ingredients.

Healthy skin starts with healthy habits

While beauty trends may change every season, dermatologists agree that healthy skin depends on consistent habits rather than quick fixes. Wearing sunscreen daily, protecting your skin from the sun, maintaining a simple skincare routine and treating your skin gently can have a greater impact than any viral beauty product.
