The Work Behind “Natural” Beauty

The Work Behind “Natural” Beauty

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

You probably have noticed how popular the natural beauty aesthetic has become in recent years. From skincare routines, to minimal makeup and the appreciation of natural features, looking effortlessly beautiful has become a trend across social media. However, what seems to be a simple and spontaneous appearance goal requires time, money and dedication. Behind the idea of looking naturally flawless, there is a growing pressure to meet beauty standards that are not always as natural as they appear. But how did these expectations develop, and why has looking effortless become another beauty goal?

Throughout history, beauty standards have changed according to the social, cultural and economic values of each period. In Ancient Greece and Rome, symmetry and balanced proportions were highly valued, while during the Renaissance, fuller bodies were often associated with wealth, fertility and prosperity. These ideals have never remained the same.

Instead, they have reflected the values and expectations of different societies. Over time, the body became more than a physical characteristic: it also became a symbol of social status, health and acceptance. Although the definition of beauty has changed from one generation to another, the pressure to fit into these ideals has remained.

With the rise of cinema, television, fashion magazines and advertising, beauty standards became increasingly present in people’s lives. Celebrities and models started to influence the way society perceived attractive bodies and faces, while the beauty industry offered products and treatments to help people achieve these ideals. In recent years, social media has accelerated this process, making beauty trends accessible to millions of people through platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.

At the same time, the definition of beauty has shifted toward a more natural appearance. Instead of visibly wearing heavy makeup or following an elaborate aesthetic, the current ideal often emphasizes glowing skin, healthy hair and subtle enhancements. However, the search for natural beauty can also become another form of pressure when people feel the need to constantly improve their appearance. What was once presented as an alternative to artificial beauty standards can end up creating a new set of expectations.

Despite its name, natural beauty does not always mean doing less. Maintaining clear skin, shiny hair and a polished appearance can involve expensive skincare products, frequent beauty appointments, hair treatments and carefully selected makeup techniques. Even the popular “no-makeup makeup” look requires products and skills to conceal imperfections while creating the impression of bare skin. In many cases, the goal is not simply to look beautiful, but to make that beauty appear effortless.

This creates the contradiction where people are encouraged to embrace their natural features while simultaneously being expected to maintain an appearance that often requires considerable effort. The expectation to fit into unrealistic beauty standards can lead to frustration, anxiety and insecurity. When looking good becomes an obligation, even basic self-care can turn into another demanding task.

Social media has made it even more difficult to separate natural beauty from carefully constructed images. Filters, editing tools and beauty tutorials can create unrealistic expectations, even when people know that the content they see has been altered. Conforming to beauty standards can contribute to persistent body insatisfaction and increase the risks of eating disorders.

According to a research at National Library of Medicine, the constant comparison with idealized bodies may encourage harmful behaviors, such as extreme diets and excessive exercise, especially when appearance is associated with success and social acceptance. Why is it so difficult to appreciate our natural features when we are constantly exposed to images of supposedly perfect appearances? When pores, wrinkles, body hair and other normal characteristics are treated as imperfections, the search for natural beauty can become another reason to feel bad about ourselves.

Questioning beauty standards does not mean that people should stop wearing makeup, following skincare routines or enjoying beauty treatments. Taking care of your appearance can be a positive experience when it comes from personal choice rather than the fear of being judged. The challenge is to understand the difference between doing something because it makes us feel good and doing it because we believe we must look a certain way to be accepted.

Rejecting oppressive beauty standards should not mean losing the ability to appreciate beauty itself. Instead, it should allow people to define beauty on their own terms, without feeling obligated to hide the natural signs of aging or constantly correct their appearance. After all, looking effortless should not require endless effort. True freedom comes from being able to choose how we present ourselves without turning beauty into a requirement for self-worth.

Easily Forgotten? 5 Care Habits to Protect Ear Beauty and Health|キレイ貯金 | 未来の自分に、キレイを貯金🪞

You take care of your face, hair, and skin every day, but what about your ears?

In fact, the ears are also affected by sebum, sweat, and dryness.

Surprisingly few people consciously care for their earlobes and the area behind their ears.

In this article, we will introduce five care habits that are easy to incorporate into your daily life, focusing on “ear beauty and health,” which we often don’t think about.

1. Moisturize your earlobes and the area around your ears

Even if you use lotion or milky lotion on your face, few people moisturize their ears.

Your earlobes and the area around your ears are also part of your skin.

When you are concerned about dryness, try using a small amount of the low-irritation moisturizing cream you usually use.

Recommended care

  • Gently apply moisturizing cream to your earlobes

  • Check if the base of your ears and the surrounding area are dry

  • Apply gently without rubbing

However, avoid applying cream inside the ear canal.

2. It is important not to overdo ear cleaning

When you want to clean your ears, you might be tempted to clean them thoroughly with a cotton swab.

But actually, earwax plays a role in protecting the inside of the ear.

Cleaning your ears too much can damage the inside of your ears or push earwax deeper inside.

Points for ear cleaning

  • Gently wipe the entrance of the ear and the visible area

  • Do not insert cotton swabs deep into the ear

  • There is no need to clean them every day

  • If you feel discomfort inside your ear, do not force a cleaning

When cleaning your ears, it is more important to “not overdo it” than to “remove everything completely.”

3. Relaxing time with a massage around the ears

Gently pinching your earlobes or softly touching the area around your ears is also recommended as a daily relaxation habit.

Try taking a little time for this after a bath or while doing your skincare routine.

Simple ear area care

  1. Gently pinch your earlobes

  2. Move them lightly without causing pain

  3. Gently stroke the area around the base of your ears with your fingertips

There is no need to pull hard or massage them forcefully.

Do not expect effects like a smaller face or improved facial sagging; incorporate this strictly as a habit for relaxation.

4. Don’t forget to wash behind your ears

The area behind the ears is surprisingly easy to overlook.

Sebum, sweat, and dirt can remain behind the ears.

This is a spot to be particularly mindful of, especially for those with long hair or those who use hair styling products.

Recommended care

  • Gently wash behind your ears while bathing

  • Ensure no shampoo or facial cleanser residue remains

  • Wipe away moisture with a soft towel after bathing

There is no need to rub strongly.

If you do this while washing your face or bathing every day, you won’t need any special tools.

5. Be mindful of how you use earphones

When we think of ear beauty, we tend to imagine skincare, but the health of the ears themselves is also important.

Recently, there have been more opportunities to use earphones and headphones.

Listening to music at high volumes for long periods can affect your hearing.

Habits to protect your ears

  • Do not turn the volume up too high

  • Do not use them continuously for long periods

  • Take off your earphones occasionally to let your ears rest

  • Keep the parts of the earphones that touch your ears clean

To continue enjoying your favorite music for a long time, you should develop habits that take care of your ears.

Summary | Ear care is also an investment in your future beauty

In this article, we introduced ear beauty and health, which we don’t usually pay much attention to.

Let’s look back at these five points.

If you experience pain, itching, discharge, or difficulty hearing in your ears, do not force self-care and consult an otolaryngologist.

When it comes to beauty, we tend to focus on our face, hair, and skin.

However, it may be important to pay a little attention to areas we don’t usually think about.

Small daily care habits will lead to the future you.

Why not start saving up for a little beauty for your ears starting today?

Reactive skin, an increasing number of skincare products, and the quest for natural ingredients: the major beauty trends revealed by the “2026 Skin Barometer” by Typology × Ifop

Reactive skin, an increasing number of skincare products, and the quest for natural ingredients: the major beauty trends revealed by the “2026 Skin Barometer” by Typology × Ifop

Typology and Ifop have unveiled the first edition of the Skin Barometer, a study that combines 791,045 skin assessments conducted on www.typology.com in the first half of 2026 with an Ifop survey conducted in October 2026 among 1,000 representative French adults. It highlights the French public’s emerging skin concerns, the evolution of their skincare routines, and their expectations regarding ingredient composition. Its finding is simple: skin concerns are on the rise, particularly among young people. In response, skincare routines are becoming more complex. However, the instinct to add more products and active ingredients isn’t always the best solution.

The Quest for Perfect Skin, Shaken Confidence: The Growing Burden of Skin Concerns

In France, 63.9% of respondents to Typology’s online skin assessment reported having reactive skin in the first half of 2026, compared to 60.7% in 2023. Across all markets, this figure reached 63.7% in the countries studied (France, the United States, Germany, and Japan).

Beyond skin reactivity, wrinkles, blemishes, and visible pores rank among the top concerns for French people. These issues can also affect their self-confidence.

According to surveys conducted by Ifop:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines are a major concern among 35- to 59-year-olds, an age group in which 46% of respondents say they are affected. They are also a greater source of self-consciousness in this group (37%) than among people aged 60 and older, which may indicate a gradual acceptance of the signs of aging.
  • Skin imperfections are experienced as a greater source of self-consciousness among women than among men: 64% of women report feeling self-conscious about them, compared to 41% of men.
  • Visible pores are emerging as a growing concern across all countries studied. This issue particularly affects young women, whose expectations regarding “perfect skin” remain high: 54% of them report feeling self-conscious about the appearance of their pores.

These results reflect a growing focus on skin appearance and quality, in a context where the ideal of smooth, flawless skin remains particularly prevalent.

The paradox: a desire for transparency, but little knowledge about active ingredients.

While value for money (61%) and product effectiveness (57%) remain top priorities, ingredients also matter: 45% of facial skincare users prefer natural ingredients.

However, 34% of facial skincare users are unaware of which active ingredients are present in their products. This paradox reveals a disconnect between transparency in product composition and understanding of the ingredients, creating a real opportunity for brands to educate consumers.

The most widely used and well-known ingredients remain vitamin C (32%), hyaluronic acid (29%), and collagen (23%).

“The French have never had greater access to information about active ingredients in cosmetics, yet one-third of them do not know which active ingredients they are using. This paradox highlights a real educational challenge for brands: transforming the abundance of information into expertise that is accessible to everyone.” Chloé Brunet, Director of Quantitative Research in the Beauty & Wellbeing division at Ifop Marketing.

More Comprehensive Skincare Routines Among Young People

The Ifop survey shows that 84% of French people use facial care products, averaging 3 to 4 products per day. Skincare routines are becoming more extensive among younger people: women under 35 use an average of 5 products. Young men are not far behind, with significant use of moisturizers (46%) and sunscreen (39%).

This generation also uses more targeted active ingredients (21% AHA / 24% BHA).

New ways of researching and purchasing, depending on the generation.

Online shopping is more common among those under 35. Supermarkets remain the primary channel for purchasing facial care products (64%). Online, the share reaches 37% among those under 35, compared to 28% for all consumers.

AI is gradually emerging as a new source of information on skincare, particularly among younger generations. Among those concerned about their pores or blemishes, 14% report using AI to find information. Social media is also frequently consulted to address these concerns, particularly regarding pores (28%).

Advice from a human professional remains the preferred option: when it comes to skin imperfections, pharmacists (38%) and dermatologists (33%) are the first points of contact.

Typology’s solution: stick to the essentials.

Faced with multiple skin concerns, the instinct is often to adapt one’s routine by adding targeted active ingredients. Each additional product increases the number of ingredients applied to the skin.

Effectiveness and skin tolerance are not mutually exclusive: having sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to give up active ingredients. Each ingredient is selected for its function and skin tolerance. Typology has developed an approach to skin tolerance based on three principles:

  • Minimalist formulations: Our essential formulas contain fewer than 20 ingredients. Our list of excluded ingredients omits substances that are otherwise authorized whenever there is any doubt about their safety for health or the environment.
  • Traceability as a guiding principle: Short, transparent ingredient lists make it easier to understand the formulas and identify ingredients that may be causing a reaction.
  • A thoughtfully curated routine, rather than a haphazard collection: Since 2020, the brand’s free online skin assessment has been taken nearly 9 million times. It helps guide each user toward a routine tailored to their skin type and specific skin concerns.

“For sensitive skin, the challenge is to carefully select ingredients whose inclusion is justified by the desired function. A minimalist formulation helps limit exposure to unnecessary ingredients, while retaining active ingredients whose benefits and tolerability are well-documented.” Stéphanie Soulé, researcher and head of scientificcommunications at www.typology.com, Ph.D. in Life and Health Sciences.

5 Beauty Habits for 30-Somethings New to Skincare to Review First. Starting with Things You Can Do Without Spending Money!

5 Beauty Habits for 30-Somethings New to Skincare to Review First. Starting with Things You Can Do Without Spending Money!

Hello.

In my previous article, I wrote about how I, as someone in my 30s who has put off beauty and dieting, want to start changing myself little by little.

This is the continuation of that.

Even when I think, “I want to work hard on my beauty routine!”, I don’t know where to start when I actually try to begin.

Should I buy new cosmetics?
Should I use serums or face masks?
Should I start doing something special?

I was thinking about things like that.
But I don’t think I’ll be able to keep it up if I start too many things all at once.

So, this time, I have compiled 5 beauty habits that I, as a beauty beginner, want to review first.

I am focusing on things I can do in my daily life without using special tools or expensive items.

1. Be thorough with your daily skincare

The first thing I want to review is my daily skincare.
Until now, there were times when I would just get through my skincare routine without much thought.

On days when I was tired, I would do it half-heartedly, or if I was in a hurry, I couldn’t care for my skin properly.

But precisely because it is something I do every day, I decided to try changing my mindset a little.

From now on, I will:

  • Not rub my face too hard when washing

  • Moisturize immediately after washing before my skin dries out

  • Apply toner and emulsion carefully

  • Be mindful of whether products suit my skin

I want to cherish these basic things.

Rather than using expensive cosmetics, I will start by properly using the skincare products I already have.

Before buying new things, I will review my current care routine.

Even just doing that might help you see what you need right now.

2. Be Mindful of UV Protection

The next thing I want to review is UV protection.
When it comes to UV protection, I used to feel like I only needed to try hard during the summer.
However, from now on, I want to be mindful of it daily, regardless of the season.

Use sunscreen when going out.

Reapply as needed.

Make use of hats and parasols as well.

There are things you can incorporate as daily habits without buying special beauty items.
If I’m going to think about my skin, I want to start by reviewing my daily UV protection.

3. Don’t Forget to Hydrate

When you’re busy, hydration is something you surprisingly forget.
I’ve also had times where I realized I hadn’t been drinking enough water.
For the sake of beauty and health, I want to be conscious of drinking water frequently throughout the day.

Instead of drinking a lot at once, I plan to incorporate it into my life, such as when I wake up in the morning, during meals, and during breaks.

I will value continuing this according to my own physical condition and lifestyle, rather than forcing myself to drink large amounts of water.

4. Move Your Body Even a Little

I’m just as concerned about my body shape as I am about beauty.

I’ve started to notice changes in my body shape more than before, and I want to start dieting little by little.
That said, I don’t intend to start intense exercise all of a sudden.

First, I’ll start with:

  • Using the stairs instead of the elevator

  • Walking for short distances

  • Doing light stretches at home

  • Trying not to sit for long periods

I’ll start with these small things.
Even if you’re not good at exercise, it seems doable to increase opportunities to move your body in daily life.
I want to find habits I can continue for a long time, rather than an unreasonable diet.

5. Don’t put yourself last

And this is what I wanted to emphasize the most this time.

Until now, I haven’t had much confidence in myself, and I’ve put beauty-related things on the back burner.

I might not be able to keep it up even if I start something.

It might not suit me.

Thinking things like that, I would sometimes give up before I even took action. But from now on, I want to make time for myself little by little.

Even 5 minutes a day is fine.

It could be time to do my skincare carefully, or time to do some slow stretching.

I think I’ll start by making time to cherish myself.

There is no need to compare yourself to others. If you can be just a little more positive than you were yesterday, that is enough.

I want to continue without strain for under 2,000 yen a month

The budget I’ve decided on for starting beauty and diet routines this time is under 2,000 yen per month. When you get interested in beauty, you want to try various products. But I don’t think there’s any need to spend a lot of money from the start.

First, I plan to make use of what I already have and only purchase things that are missing or that I truly feel I need.

Also, I want to incorporate things I can do without spending money, such as stretching and walking.

What kind of ingenuity can I use within a limited budget? I plan to introduce that on this note as I actually try things out.

I’ll start with what I can do first

The five things I introduced this time are nothing special. But for me, having put beauty on the back burner until now, they are an important first step.

Instead of aiming for perfection right away, I’ll take it one step at a time, starting with what I can do.

Even if there are days when I can’t do it, I don’t need to blame myself; I can just start again.

I want to continue with that kind of mindset.

From now on, I plan to record how it went when I actually tried these, as well as any changes or realizations I had.

How much can a 30-something beauty beginner change themselves for under 2,000 yen a month?
I want to enjoy this challenge myself as I take it on.

Thank you for reading until the end.

For those of you who are thinking about starting beauty routines or self-improvement just like me, let’s do our best little by little together.

How to Combat Pollution-Induced Skin Damage and Festive Breakouts

With Diwali festivities just around the corner, increased pollution, greater exposure to dust, smoke, and makeup, and disruptions to daily routines can adversely affect skin health. High levels of particulate matter, including PM2.5, can settle on the skin, causing oxidative stress, weakening the skin barrier, and aggravating issues such as dryness, inflammation, dullness, and acne.

Dr Rinky Kapoor, Co-Founder and Director, The Esthetic Clinics® says, ‘A 72-hour skin reset can be a simple way to prepare your skin for the upcoming celebrations’. She says, ‘The key is to focus on restoring skin barrier health, maintaining hydration, and protecting the skin, rather than experimenting with new skincare products.’

The First 24 Hours: Cleanse and Reset

Start with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that removes dirt, oil, and pollutants without drying out the skin. Avoid harsh scrubs and aggressive exfoliation, and refrain from introducing multiple active ingredients, particularly if your skin is already sensitised or irritated. After cleansing, apply a moisturiser containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid or glycerin to hydrate the skin and support its barrier.

The Next 24 Hours: Stay Hydrated And Protect Your Skin

Focus on replenishing moisture and soothing the skin. Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser suited to your skin type, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher during the day. Antioxidants such as vitamin C may help combat oxidative stress, provided they are already part of your skincare routine and are well tolerated by your skin.

The Final 24 Hours: Keep it simple

Avoid trying new facials, chemical peels, strong retinoids or salon treatments that may cause redness, irritation or breakouts. If you plan to wear makeup for the celebrations, ensure that your brushes and applicators are clean. Remove all makeup thoroughly before going to bed, followed by a gentle cleansing and moisturising routine.

Other Things To Focus On While Following The 72 Hour Routine

It is also important to stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and avoid touching your face unnecessarily. Those experiencing persistent acne, irritation, or allergic reactions should consult a dermatologist rather than attempt to treat these concerns themselves.

Enjoy Festive Glow !

The secret to getting your skin ready for the celebrations lies in consistent care rather than a one-time solution. A simple skincare routine involving gentle cleansing and moisturising can help support skin health.
