Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Recipe (Family Favorite!)

One of our favorite cold-weather meals is classic shepherd’s pie. In this not-so-classic version, you get a big veggie boost from mashed sweet potato. It’s a delicious spin on traditional shepherd’s pie, especially if you’re making the switch from white potatoes (or if you just prefer the taste!).

Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

You might be wondering if you can use sweet potatoes to make shepherd’s pie. While white potatoes are key in the traditional Irish dish, no one says you can’t use sweet potatoes! And really, our family prefers the taste. White potatoes or sweet potatoes aren’t any better, it’s really just about preference.

If you’re doing Whole 30, which doesn’t allow dairy (and favors sweet potatoes), then this version is easily adaptable. Not only is it healthy and easy, but it’s also paleo, gluten-free, and can easily be made dairy-free.

How to Make Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie

I’ve left the recipe for my shepherd’s pie pretty similar to most, but added kale for a little extra vegetable boost and swapped out the traditional with potatoes for sweet potatoes. This recipe is similar to my meatloaf cupcakes, but with more veggies.

To make the casserole, I brown the ground beef with seasonings, then stir in the diced vegetables, heat it up, and pour it into a casserole dish. I have this oven safe deep skillet that I use for both purposes and save myself a pan to wash.

While the meat is cooking I mash the sweet potatoes with butter and salt and smooth them on top of the meat and vegetable mixture when it is done. To save myself a little time, I usually make extra sweet potatoes with another meal earlier in the week then just pull them out of the fridge when I’m ready to use them.

Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients and Substitutions

While I like the kale for extra nutrition, you can also leave it out if you just prefer to have mixed veggies. Or use another leafy green like spinach or chard instead. If you want to add even more flavor, add a splash of coconut aminos, Worcestershire sauce, or balsamic vinegar for extra depth.

Want to make it dairy-free? Use coconut oil instead of butter and skip the cream cheese. If you still want to make the sweet potato topping creamier, you can try adding a little coconut milk when mashing. And if dairy isn’t a concern at all, shepherd’s pie with cheese on top is also delicious!

I make this recipe with ground beef since it’s easy to get, but you could also use ground lamb for a more traditional taste. If you want a lower calorie or fat version, ground turkey works well. And while I’m not vegetarian, I’ve heard cooked lentils also work well instead of the ground meat.

Quick Tips

To save time on the sweet potatoes you can bake them ahead of time. I’ll make some earlier on in the week and pull them out of the fridge when needed. You can bake them for about an hour until soft. For a faster version, boil diced sweet potatoes for about 10 minutes, drain, then use for this recipe.

I’m big on meal prep and this is a great recipe to make ahead. You can even bake the ingredients in pint-sized mason jars for easy packable lunches!

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. To freeze, place the unbaked, layered, shepherd’s pie in a freezer safe container and wrap tightly. Let it thaw in the fridge before baking for 30 minutes at 350. I like doubling the recipe and freezing half for later.

If you love sweet potatoes as much as we do, give this recipe a try!

Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

This healthier take on shepherd’s pie features a creamy sweet potato topping. This is a family favorite at our house and my kids love helping make the layers.

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the meat.

  • Mix in 1 teaspoon of the salt and all remaining seasonings and transfer to a large bowl.

  • Saute the onion and kale in the skillet until slightly soft and add to the meat.

  • Pour the mixed vegetables into the skillet and heat on low heat.

  • While the vegetables are heating, mash the cooked sweet potatoes with butter and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt until smooth.

  • Add the mixed vegetables to the meat mixture, sprinkle the arrowroot on top, and stir to combine.

  • Pour the meat/vegetable mixture into a 9×13 baking dish and spread in an even layer. Add the mashed sweet potatoes and smooth evenly over the top.

  • Bake at 350°F for approximately 30 minutes.

  • When done, top with a small dollop of cream cheese if desired and enjoy.

Is It Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie?

Shepherd’s pie is Irish in origin and usually is made with ground lamb. Cottage pie is British and made with ground beef. However, most people don’t quibble over the small differences and use the terms interchangeably. Read more fun shepherd’s pie facts here.

Honasa launches a new skincare brand Luminéve

Honasa launches a new skincare brand Luminéve

Honasa Consumer has introduced Luminéve, a new skincare brand developed around the science of the skin’s nocturnal repair cycle and circadian rhythm. Marking the company’s entry into the prestige skincare category, the brand focuses exclusively on night-time skincare routines. Luminéve is available exclusively on Nykaa.

Built on the understanding that the skin’s renewal processes accelerate during the night, the range is formulated to align with the skin’s natural repair rhythm. Each product is developed to enhance absorption, recovery, and hydration during the night, when the skin is most receptive to treatment.

At the core of the formulations is the brand’s proprietary Advanced NightRenew Complex™, which combines active ingredients and botanicals such as Collagen & Peptides, Niacinamide, Polyglutamic Acid, Cica (Madecassoside), Bisabolol, and Licorice. The actives are encapsulated for time-release delivery that complements the skin’s circadian cycle.

Ghazal Alagh, co-founder and chief innovation officer, Honasa Consumer said: “Night skincare has long been treated as an extension of day routines, but the skin doesn’t follow our convenience; it follows its own biology. During the day, the skin is in defence mode, shielding itself from stressors. At night, it shifts into repair and regeneration mode, it absorbs better, loses more moisture and responds most effectively to targeted treatment. Luminéve is built to respect this science. It is purposeful, precise and designed for the time when skin naturally repairs the most, across different skin types.”

The debut collection features clinically tested night moisturisers for six distinct skin types, along with overnight serums that use liposomal technology to enhance the absorption of actives such as Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Retinol, and Salicylic Acid.

Developed by Honasa’s in-house R&D team in collaboration with Korean formulation experts and a global dermatologist, Luminéve combines functional science with sensorial design suited to Indian skin. The range will retail between INR 1499 and INR 1799 on Nykaa.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Told Me Every Detail Of Her Exercise Routine

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Told Me Every Detail Of Her Exercise Routine

Certain celebrities are known for their sheer commitment to an exercise routine. Tracee Ellis Ross and Gwyneth Paltrow are famously Tracy Anderson devotees, while Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner are regularly snapped leaving Forma Pilates in LA. One person who also prioritises fitness, but is relatively low-key about it, is Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Most recently spotted in the Burberry 2025 festive campaign alongside a host of national treasures including Jennifer Saunders and Naomi Campbell, Huntington-Whiteley paused to share an approach to health and wellness that is refreshingly balanced. Calling from the back of a car winding its way through the Austrian mountains, the model, entrepreneur and mum-of-two broke it all down for British Vogue.

She flows with the seasons

If there’s one thing you should know about Huntington-Whiteley, I come to realise, it’s that she loves Christmas – and the months leading up to it. “[Autumn] is my favourite season – the change from summer and how atmospheric it is.” As for most people, though, it’s an incredibly busy time. “I like to train hard before the festive period, and then take some time off and focus on the family,” she says.

She weight trains

For RHW, training hard means being consistent, as “that’s when [she] feels her strongest and fittest”. As for what she’s doing, it’s a long way from her early 20s, which were a blur of Pilates and dance cardio. Now in her late 30s, she’s all about weight training. “I feel really strong and it’s improved my posture, muscle tone and definition.” In her words: “Every girl should do it.”

Regular resistance training can help with everything from increased bone density (crucial as we age and posture and uprightness become ever more important), to more muscle mass, improved metabolic health, immune function, mood stability and better quality sleep.

She adapts her exercise to her cycle

Cycle syncing your workouts can help with managing energy levels, mood and how fatigued you feel. By tracking where you are in your cycle and adapting your exercise to each phase, working out can feel less like a depletion of resources and more like something that energises you.

“My trainer and I will discuss where I’m at in my cycle and decide whether to go heavier or [depending on where I am], if I want to do a high-rep, low weight workout. There’s nothing more satisfactory to me than when I go up in weight. It makes me happy when I start to see the results of [consistently] lifting.”

Makeup forecast 2026: Minimal and natural looks will rule, say celebrity makeup artists

Makeup forecast 2026: Minimal and natural looks will rule, say celebrity makeup artists

Every season and year brings a fresh wave of creativity in the world of makeup. But there’s one thing constant: makeup is not only about looking good, but feeling good from within. Year 2025 was about a fascinating blend of minimalist beauty and bold colour statements. The question is what follows next year? At the recently-concluded Nykaaland, team HT Shop Now caught up with celebrity makeup artists Daniel Bauer and Namrata Soni, to discuss the trends worth looking forward to

Year 2026 is going to be all about minimal makeup, expert says(Instagram)

Minimalist, natural makeup looks may rule

According to Namrata Soni, semi-matte skin – “basically very cloudy, gorgeous natural skin” – is here to stay.

Daniel Bauer, who has styled celebrities like Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, and Anushka Sharma, says, “I don’t see a lot of highlighting and contouring happening next year. I think that should go! In fact, I wish it should go.”

At Nykalaand, while Daniel showcased bold makeup styles, Namrata Soni, best known for styling Sonam Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, and Isha Ambani, was all about bridal glow.

Interviewing Daniel Bauer and Namrata Soni at Nykaaland (Instagram)

A makeup trend that should make a comeback

If there’s one makeup trend that should make a comeback, Namrata Soni wishes it is dark, beautiful eyes should definitely make a comeback. “I think eyeshadows should definitely come back in trend. People have veered away from eyeshadows, and a good eyeshadow, powder eyeshadow, can really amp up your look. So I hope that trend comes back”, says Soni.

Most loved makeup technique

Bauer loves to mix a lot of things together. “I like mixing contouring, highlighter, foundation, all together to create a new look. It’s always a little bit better, a little bit more blended”, says Bauer.

Three makeup products to create a glam look

If there were only three makeup products to create a glam look, it would be a kajal, eyeliner, and mascara for Bauer. While for Soni, it would be red lipstick, black eyeliner, and a beautiful contour and blush.

This viral foundation fades fine lines and redness in 100% of users – tested with pics

This viral foundation fades fine lines and redness in 100% of users – tested with pics

As a matte foundation, full-coverage-loving twenty-something-year-old teenage girl (I’m in denial) – who also has oily, acne-prone skin, may I add – I never thought that a dewy skin tint would find its way into my daily makeup routine. But here I am today, glowing, as if I just discovered skincare for the first time. Miracles do happen…

For this newfound love of minimalist makeup, I present my acceptance speech, acknowledgements, and thanks (read: this love letter), dedicated to Victoria Beckham and her very own viral product, The Foundation Drops with TFC8®. So, if a lightweight base with thousands of glowing social media video reviews sounds like your match made in makeup heaven, see my tried and tested thoughts below.

Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops with TFC8®

In the summer of 2025, Victoria Beckham Beauty released its very first foundation (The Foundation Drops), targeting makeup minimalists. It comes in 19 shades that range from 0 Fair Light to 18 Rich, with a number of cool, neutral and warm undertones and can be described as a marrying of skincare and makeup.

Everyone’s clicking on…

Speaking about the release, Victoria said at the time: “We created The Foundation Drops for minimalists like me. The formula melts into my skin for a naturally flawless complexion and nourishes with Augustinus Bader’s TFC8® technology as I wear it. This is the first foundation that feels like nothing, yet truly does everything.”

Pretty impressive claims, right? Well, other than the absurdly expensive price tag (because yes, this love, like the spending habits that go hand in hand with any romantic relationship, comes at the detriment of my bank account), I would agree to the product being “flawless”… Just like my skin, TBH.

Balling on a budget? (Same.) Read about some of our other fave lightweight foundation and skin tint products here.

Just a few drops of the formula stretch to cover redness and pigmentation across the whole face and melt into the skin with just a few buffs. Think: Your natural complexion, but better. Texture-wise, it’s super lightweight, so much so that it feels undetectable on the skin, not to mention that the dry down is dewy but not greasy, making for a healthy, radiant glow. Dull winter complexion? We don’t know her!

Before and after:

As someone with oily skin, I set the base with a loose powder to maximise wear and longevity, and throughout the day, it needed minimal blotting. That said, if you have dry skin, the base alone works a dream.

And not only that, but the technology in its formula (created by Augustinus Bader, a biomedical scientist and the brains behind his luxury namesake brand) not only improves skin appearance on first application, but over time, too. This is due to a complex of natural amino acids, high-grade vitamins, and small molecules that work to support the skin’s natural regeneration process and guide nutrients to cells.

While fine lines and wrinkles aren’t a top priority for me, the clinical trials carried out by the brand show that 100 per cent of participants saw significant improvement in skin elasticity after 6 weeks of use, and 97 per cent of participants showed significant improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after 6 weeks of use.*

*Based on a clinical trial of 33 females, aged 35-66 years, using a Cutometer®.

So, although dubbed a ‘foundation’, this product is more skin-tint-like thanks to its hybrid skincare-makeup formula – and we love beauty that works smarter, not harder!

Now, I could continue waxing lyrical, but let’s just let my face do all the talking, shall we?

Still not convinced? Read a variety of glowing 5-star reviews from customers who love The Foundation Drops just as much as I do:

  • “I originally purchased the Victoria Beckham Beauty Foundation Drops directly from the VB website and absolutely fell in love with them! The texture is silky and blends like a dream — lightweight yet gives such beautiful, natural coverage. When I pair it with my Augustinus Bader skincare, my skin literally glows all day long.”
  • “The foundation is delicate and covers imperfections. My skin looks fresh and so healthy. It settles into my skin the way I’ve always dreamed. It doesn’t create lines under my eyes like other foundations, which is amazing. And it stays on my face as long as I expect. It doesn’t stain clothes or hands like other foundations. The effect exceeded my expectations. The foundation also has a delicate scent, which is pleasant.”
  • “I never liked to use foundation because of the feeling of having something on my face. The VB foundation drops is absolutely amazing. Light to medium coverage, very natural. And it gives so much hydration. I’m in love!!!”
  • “I wanted to hate this because of the price… lol. However, I really love it. So easy to use, feels great, blends out in a second. Beautiful product. I love all my VB makeup.”
  • “In love with the formulation of this foundation, it’s so skin like, I’ve gotten compliments of how glowy my skin looks!”

Firmer, plumper, VB skin soon come!

DIY Homemade Face Packs to Keep Your Skin Glowing This Winter

DIY Homemade Face Packs to Keep Your Skin Glowing This Winter

When the winter chill sets in, our skin often bears the brunt — turning dry, dull, and lifeless. The lack of humidity and harsh winds strip away natural oils, leaving skin craving hydration. While store-bought products promise quick fixes, nothing works quite like homemade face packs made from natural ingredients. These easy, nourishing recipes help restore moisture, radiance, and softness — all from the comfort of your kitchen.

Here are six simple, effective DIY winter face packs that will pamper your skin and bring back that healthy glow.

1. Honey & Aloe Vera Hydrating Pack

Best for: Dry, dull, or sensitive skin

If your skin feels tight or flaky, this soothing blend is the perfect fix. Honey acts as a natural humectant, locking in moisture, while aloe vera cools and heals irritation.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey

Method:

Mix the two ingredients into a smooth paste. Apply evenly over your face and neck, and let it sit for 15–20 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water.

Result: Soft, supple, and deeply hydrated skin that glows naturally.

2. Milk Cream & Turmeric Glow Pack

Best for: Normal to dry skin

Fresh milk cream (malai) is one of nature’s best moisturizers. Combined with a pinch of turmeric, it helps brighten your complexion while keeping the skin nourished and smooth.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon fresh milk cream
  • A pinch of turmeric

Method:

Blend both ingredients well and apply to your face. Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

Result: A natural, golden glow with baby-soft skin.

3. Banana & Honey Moisture Boost Pack

Best for: Extremely dry or flaky skin

Bananas are rich in potassium and antioxidants that help repair and hydrate rough winter skin. When paired with honey, they create a moisture powerhouse.

Ingredients:

  • ½ ripe banana (mashed)
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Method:

Mash the banana and mix in honey. Apply to clean skin and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

Result: Smooth, plump, and deeply nourished skin.

4. Oatmeal & Yogurt Exfoliating Pack

Best for: Combination to dry skin

Exfoliation is essential in winter to remove dead cells that block moisture absorption. Oats gently scrub without stripping the skin, while yogurt hydrates and brightens.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon oatmeal powder
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Method:

Mix all ingredients into a creamy paste. Apply gently in circular motions and leave for 10–15 minutes before rinsing.

Result: Soft, radiant skin that feels clean and rejuvenated.

5. Coconut Oil & Cocoa Butter Repair Mask

Best for: Very dry, cracked, or mature skin

Winter can be harsh on mature or sensitive skin. This rich mask combines coconut oil and cocoa butter to provide intense nourishment and repair.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon melted cocoa butter
  • ½ teaspoon honey

Method:

Blend the ingredients and apply while slightly warm. Leave on for 15 minutes, then wipe off with a warm, damp cloth.

Result: Velvety, hydrated skin with a natural sheen.

6. Avocado & Olive Oil Nourishing Pack

Best for: Dry and aging skin

Avocado’s healthy fats and vitamin E make it a winter skincare hero. Mixed with olive oil, it deeply nourishes and improves skin elasticity.

Ingredients:

  • ½ ripe avocado
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Method:

Mash the avocado and mix in olive oil. Apply generously and leave for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Result: Soft, youthful, and radiant skin even on the coldest days.

Winter Skincare Tip:

Always follow up your face pack routine with a mild moisturizer or face oil to lock in hydration. And remember — consistency is key. Using these natural masks 2–3 times a week will keep your skin glowing all season long.

This winter, skip the chemical-laden creams and rediscover the beauty of natural skincare. With these DIY face packs, your skin will stay hydrated, healthy, and beautifully radiant — no matter how chilly it gets outside.

Birthday Makeup

Look Your Best With The Birthday Makeup Trend

Photo via @sasha.kilby

Your birthday is your day, so why not celebrate it exactly how you want – glam included? TikTok’s beauty community gets it, with birthday makeup videos taking over the feed. These looks are all about going big: dramatic eyes, glitter, and flawless, full-coverage finishes that feel just as special as the day itself. Sure, some may say it’s “too much,” but that’s the point. Your birthday is the perfect excuse to step outside your usual routine and own the spotlight. So if you’re getting ready for your next cake day and need a little inspo, we’ve got you covered with a quick, high-impact makeup look that’s made to wow.

Complexion

If you’re heading out to celebrate, start with a gripping primer to ensure your makeup lasts all night. Once your skin is prepped, apply a high-coverage foundation and a brightening concealer to even out your complexion. Use a creamy contour stick to sculpt your temples, cheekbones, nose bridge, and outer eye corners, blending it out fully with a dense brush. Next, bring color to your complexion with blush – any shade works! Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend upward, using the excess across the bridge of your nose for a soft flush.

Shimmer & Shine

This birthday glam may be simple, but it’s the shimmering details that make it pop. Start with an eyeshadow primer, followed by a neutral matte shade across your lids. Using a dark gray shadow, line above the upper lash line and softly blend it upward for a diffused finish. Tightline both your upper and lower waterlines, then go all out with fluttery false lashes and mascara on the bottom lashes. For the final touch, grab a pearlescent eyeshadow like Stila’s Glitter & Glow and sweep it into the inner corners and along the crease for a luminous glow. Use the same product to highlight the bridge of your nose and cupid’s bow. After all, if there’s ever a day to sparkle, it’s your birthday.

6 skincare mistakes that might be sabotaging your beauty routine

6 skincare mistakes that might be sabotaging your beauty routine

“The greatest obstacle to knowledge is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge,” wrote American historian Daniel J Boorstin. It’s a phrase I return to often, a reminder of the importance of questioning what we think we know, especially useful when your job revolves around health and beauty.

Because even after years of writing, I still make skincare mistakes. Sometimes I combine the wrong actives. Other times, I copy a viral routine that clearly wasn’t designed for my skin. All of which has taught me that cosmetics aren’t entertainment; they’re part of our health and that knowledge, not novelty, should guide them.

If you’re someone who loves beauty as much as I do, you’ve probably had moments when your skin just… stalls. The products promise results, yet nothing seems to change. According to Arkaitz Felices, cosmetologist and director of Care, representatives of Reviderm in Spain, this isn’t always the fault of your products. Sometimes, it’s your skin. “If you notice that a product that works on people with a skin type and needs similar to yours has no effect on you, it is a clear clue that there may be an imbalance in the dermal extracellular matrix (ECM),” that is, the structural framework that facilitates cellular communication and the effectiveness of cosmetic active ingredients.

Felices suggests learning to distinguish between routines that simply need time and those that have hit a dead end. Some effects, such as hydration, are visible in a few days: the skin recovers volume, fine wrinkles due to dehydration are attenuated and the tissue appears more elastic and fresh.” Others, such as collagen production, cell turnover, or fading hyperpigmentation, are slower and depend on internal metabolic processes. “Results in these areas can take several weeks and vary by person.”

When a routine is genuinely off, the clues are obvious. “Irritation, redness, itching or inflammation are unmistakable signs that the skin is stressed or assaulted.” In those cases, stop, focus on repairing the barrier and restore balance before reintroducing actives. “When it comes to caring for our body’s most extensive and sensitive organ, the shortest route is not to ask ChatGPT, but to rely on qualified professionals who understand the science behind each skin.”

Skincare mistakes you may be making

Skipping proper cleansing“Pretending that a cosmetic acts on uncleaned skin is like serving dinner on dirty breakfast dishes,” says Felices, who considers cleansing the foundation of any routine. He recommends a thorough evening cleanse that removes oil-based impurities such as makeup and sunscreen, then water-soluble residue. A gentle enzymatic exfoliation can follow to clarify, smooth texture and improve receptivity, without aggressive renewal.

Forgetting photoprotection

Skipping SPF—or applying it in the wrong order—undoes progress. UV exposure drives pigmentation and premature ageing. Felices points out that applying sunscreen before other treatments have absorbed reduces its effect. A broad-spectrum filter should sit at the end of the daytime routine.

Layering products out of order

Texture hierarchy matters. Lightweight toners, serums and water-based treatments should be applied before creams or richer textures. “This is because thicker products act as a barrier and impede the penetration of subsequent cosmetics.”

Lacking consistency

This is non-negotiable. “Continuous and disciplined use is needed for weeks or months for the skin’s biological processes to respond,” says Felices. Constantly switching or quitting early makes real improvement hard to see.

Ignoring usage directions

Leaving a mask on all night doesn’t maximise benefits. Lab directions aren’t arbitrary; they’re based on studies that determine optimal exposure. With cellulose or biocellulose masks, there’s a point at which most hydration and actives have already transferred. Beyond that, the flow can reverse and the mask may begin to reabsorb moisture, reducing the benefits.

Mixing actives without a plan

More isn’t better. Overloading can weaken the skin barrier. “The skin microbiome is altered and inflammatory outbreaks, redness or flaking may appear. The key is to simplify the routine, space out treatments and remember that, in advanced cosmetics, efficacy does not depend on quantity, but on balance and personalisation.”

How to combine actives safely

If you’re unsure how to pair products, Felices offers this guide:
