5 Simple & Natural Detox Bath Recipes

Nothing is more relaxing than a warm bath… except a relaxing detox bath. These are a great option for anyone who struggles with skin issues or other signs of toxin overwhelm. It’s also an inexpensive way to boost health.

I’m always up for a warm bath, and these natural add-ons help improve health while you chill out. Don’t have time for a full soak? You can also do a foot bath with these and get some of the benefits.

I’ve found that detoxing usually makes me tired, so I like to do this as part of an evening/bedtime routine. They’re also good for kids to give their body’s natural defenses some natural support. If you have any health conditions or are pregnant or nursing, be sure to check with your healthcare professional first!

Natural Detox Bath Recipes

Over the years my opinions on what detox even is have changed. I now see detox as something our body innately knows how to do on its own. Our liver, kidneys, skin, and other organs all work to remove toxins on a regular basis.

However, with modern life, sometimes they need a little more targeted support.

You may have heard of an Epsom salt bath (and that is our base recipe here), but what about a clay bath, vinegar bath, or even a mustard bath?! You’ll find many of these ingredients already in your pantry, but they serve more than one purpose. Ingredients like salt, baking soda, essential oils, and vinegar boost circulation, aid detox and provide soothing relaxation. I also like using Epsom salts as a way to boost magnesium stores.

You only need a few simple ingredients to make some or all of these detox bath recipes:

  • Epsom salt
  • apple cider vinegar
  • baking soda
  • bentonite clay (it also has lots of other uses, so consider stocking up!)
  • mustard powder or ginger powder
  • essential oils (mix with powder or salt rather than directly to the bath)

These recipes are also safe and soothing for kids too! (But choose your essential oils wisely.)

Basic Epsom Salt Detox Bath Recipe

Here’s my basic detox bath recipe. Find the other variations below. Mix and match, or find your favorite!

Salt Detox Bath Recipe

This simple salt bath recipe is great for soothing skin irritation, boosting magnesium levels, and overall detoxing.

Yield: 1 bath

Author: Katie Wells

  • In a small pan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.

  • Add the sea salt, Epsom salt, and baking soda to a quart-size Mason jar.

  • SLOWLY pour the hot water into the jar. The mixture will foam up, so be sure to do this slowly and do not hold the jar to avoid burning.

  • Fill the bathtub with warm/hot water.

  • Add the apple cider vinegar.

  • Pour the salt mixture in and add essential oils if using.

  • Soak in the bath for 30 minutes or as long as desired.

  • With any detox bath, you may feel tired or lightheaded when you get out. I don’t recommend doing this while home alone or before going somewhere in case you are tired or need help.
  • Avoid essential oils that are harsher on mucous membranes, like mint, cinnamon, oregano, or lemongrass. They can cause an unpleasant burning sensation.

Clay Detox Bath Recipe

Bentonite clay is an ingredient I use in a lot of different recipes, from face masks to toothpaste. It does a really good job of absorbing heavy metals that can accumulate in our body.

It’s recommended to use a drain filter or cloth filter in the drain when doing a clay bath. This helps prevent the bentonite from accumulating in the pipes and potentially causing a clog.

Clay Detox Bath Instructions

Dissolve the Epsom salts in a warm/hot bath and add essential oils if desired. For the clay, there are two options:

  1. Vigorously mix the clay into a small amount of water until the clumps are mostly dissolved.  Bentonite can react to metal, so I use plastic or wooden spoons to mix. Add the clay mix to the bath and soak for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Mix that clay with a small amount of water to make a paste. Stand in the tub full of water and rub the clay mix all over your body to create a skin mask and let it dry for 5 minutes before sitting down. This provides direct contact with the skin and effectively pulls toxins from the skin. Soak in the bath for at least 20 minutes or as long as desired. While soaking, use a washcloth to scrub any remaining clay off the skin.

This bath is great for removing a lot of toxins as the clay binds to heavy metals. The Epsom salts help pull a variety of toxins from the body while replenishing magnesium levels.

Oxygen Detox Bath Recipe

This bath is especially helpful during illness. Ginger helps clear congestion, alleviate body aches, and stimulate circulation for faster healing times. It can also be helpful for allergies or skin irritation. You can also make a strong tea with the ginger, strain after 15 minutes, then add the ginger tea to the bath.

Oxygen Detox Bath Instructions

  1. Fill the tub with warm/hot water and add the hydrogen peroxide and dried ginger.
  2. Soak in tub for 30 minutes or as long as desired.

Vinegar Detox Bath Recipe

This is an excellent bath for soothing skin problems since vinegar balances the skin’s pH. While I don’t love the smell of vinegar, if anyone in the family has sunburn, eczema, dandruff, or dry itchy skin, we take a vinegar bath.

Apple cider vinegar has a whole host of benefits, and I find it not only leaves me with soft skin, but shiny hair as well.

Vinegar Bath Instructions

  1. Once or twice a week, I fill a tub with warm to hot water and add 1-2 cups of apple cider vinegar.
  2. I soak for 20-30 minutes, using a washcloth to clean my face and making sure to get my hair wet as well.

After bathing, I rinse off in a cool shower, though some recommend letting the vinegar water dry on the skin.

Mustard Detox Bath Recipe

I know, I’ve lost my mind, right? If it helps, I’m talking about organic mustard powder, not the yellow stuff in a bottle! Ancient cultures often used this spice in preparations to soothe colds, flus, and sore muscles, thanks to its circulation-stimulating properties.

Magnesium and essential oils make this bath both detoxifying and aromatic.

Mustard Bath Instructions

I use this recipe which uses organic mustard powder, Epsom salts, and a mix of essential oils.

Additional Detox Bath Notes

  • The warmer the water, the more powerful the detox effect will be.
  • If you have chlorine and fluoride in your water, I recommend adding a few tablespoons of bentonite clay to any of these baths to help absorb the chemicals so they aren’t absorbed into the skin. A home filter or bath filter are good options too.
  • Any of these natural ingredients can be used alone or in combination for a cleansing effect.
  • All recipes can be doubled or tripled, but this will increase the detox effect.

Pigmentation Treatment: From sunscreen to sleep: Everyday habits that impact pigmentation treatment

Pigmentation Treatment: From sunscreen to sleep: Everyday habits that impact pigmentation treatment

(Image Credits: Pinterest) There was a time when pigmentation was largely discussed inside a dermatologist’s clinic. Today, it has become one of the most searched skincare concerns, and understandably so. Consumers are more aware, more curious and far more willing to invest in skincare than ever before. Despite the growing number of products and ingredients available, one question continues to surface: “Why isn’t my pigmentation getting better?”The answer often lies beyond the skincare shelfPigmentation doesn’t appear overnight, and it rarely has a single cause. While genetics and hormonal changes can certainly play a role, the skin is also responding to countless everyday experiences that we barely think about. Those small, repeated exposures eventually leave a visible imprint.

It’s Never Just One Sunny AfternoonWhen people hear the words “sun damage”, they usually picture a beach holiday or an afternoon spent outdoors. In reality, skin doesn’t distinguish between a holiday in Goa and twenty minutes spent walking to work every morning. Those brief moments in the sun, repeated day after day, are enough to keep triggering melanin production. Add to that long hours spent near windows, frequent commutes or forgetting to reapply sunscreen, and it becomes easier to understand why pigmentation has a habit of returning just when it seems to be improving. The skin remembers patterns, not occasions The Industry Has Created Smarter Consumers and Higher ExpectationsOne of the biggest changes we have witnessed over the years is how informed skincare consumers have become. Ingredient lists are no longer intimidating. People know what niacinamide does, they ask about tranexamic acid, and they actively seek dermatologist-backed formulations. That shift is encouraging because informed consumers make better choices. At the same time, information overload has created a different challenge. Many people believe that if one active ingredient works, four must work even better. In reality, the skin doesn’t reward excess. It rewards consistency. An overloaded routine can leave the skin irritated, weaken its protective barrier and, ironically, make pigmentation even more difficult to manage. Sometimes the best decision is not adding another serum but giving the skin the stability it has been missing.

Healthy Skin Is Built Long After the Routine EndsThe skincare industry understandably spends a great deal of time talking about products. We spend far less time talking about lifestyle. And the skin is influenced by the life we lead every day. Stress, inadequate sleep, poor hydration and environmental exposure all affect how efficiently the skin repairs itself. These are not dramatic events that instantly create pigmentation, but they shape how resilient the skin is and how well it responds to treatment over time. This is why skincare should never be viewed in isolation. The routine you follow in front of the mirror is only one part of the equation. What happens during the remaining twenty-three hours of the day matters just as much. Science Is Becoming More IntelligentIn a conversation with Shaily Mehrotra, CEO & Co-Founder of Fixderma & FCL, she solely spoke about the issue and said, “Dermatology has moved well beyond the idea of simply lightening dark spots. The focus today is understanding why pigmentation develops and supporting healthier skin while addressing those biological pathways. That is where innovation becomes meaningful. The future of skincare is becoming more precise, more personalised and far more respectful of how the skin naturally functions.” She further added, “People often ask what the most effective pigmentation treatment is. There isn’t a single answer. The most effective treatment is one that combines good science with good habits. A thoughtfully formulated skincare routine can certainly improve pigmentation, but it performs at its best when it is supported by everyday decisions that protect the skin instead of challenging it.”

The Ugly Truth About Lash/Brow Serums You Need To Know...

The Ugly Truth About Lash/Brow Serums You Need To Know…

If you are using a serum to help grow thicker, longer lashes and/or brows, this post is for you. I’ve always been an advocate of natural ingredients and always vetted my beauty products leaning mainly on DIY recipes but I will admit I’ve cracked in the last year and tried out a few viral products making huge claims and speaking straight to my insecurities on aging.

One of those products I fell for was a lash serum. An influencer was showing before and afters of her lashes. The growth was incredible and I clicked the link in 2 seconds flat. I used the serum and I will say, it worked. However, my eyes burned while applying it and something in my gut made me uneasy about continuing using it.

Turns out, my gut was right and upon further research I found that most lash serums contain a class of ingredient called prostaglandin analogs or PGAs. There are several different ingredients that fall under this class of drug. This type of ingredient causes the fat cells around your eyes to shrink which gives a sunken in, hollow appearance causing a deep shadow all around the eye. PGAs can also cause permanent color changes to the iris, darkening of the eyelid and chronic eye irritation.

PGAs Commonly Found in Lash/Brow Growth Serums:

  • Isopropyl Cloprostenate (IPCP): The most common prostaglandin analog used in over-the-counter (OTC) brow and lash serums including the one I fell for.
  • Ethyl Tafluprostamide (DDDE)
  • Methylamido-dihydro-noralfaprostal (MDN)
  • Bimatoprost: The active ingredient in prescription Latisse, and a prostaglandin derivative.
  • Latanoprost & Travoprost: Primarily used in prescription glaucoma eye drops, but sometimes utilized in off-label serums.

Popular Lash/Brow Growth Serums That Contain PGAs

  • GrandeLASH-MD: Contains Isopropyl Cloprostenate. This is one of the most widely used over-the-counter growth serums on the market.
  • RevitaLash Advanced: Contains Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide, a synthetic prostaglandin derivative.
  • Babe Original (Essential Lash Serum): Contains Isopropyl Cloprostenate. Note that they also make a separate “Renewing” SKU which is prostaglandin-free.
  • RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum: Contains Isopropyl Cloprostenate.
  • NeuLash Lash Enhancing Serum: Contains Isopropyl Cloprostenate.
  • Latisse: Contains Bimatoprost (0.03%). This is a FDA-approved, prescription-only lash treatment.

There Is Good News….

Luckily the side effects of PGAs are fully reversible after a few months of not using the serum. Unfortunately, some side effects of beauty products aren’t reversible.

More good news is that there are other lash and brow serums that do not contain these ingredients. Including my Big Brow Serum I sell on my Etsy shop! My serum contains only plant based ingredients and it works! I use it regularly to keep my brows in tip top shape. Having hypothyroidism causes my brows to thin so using my serum has really kept that at bay. Plus, every time I wax my brows, too much hair gets removed every single time!

My brow serum won’t work for lashes because it contains essential oils. Some eyes can take a small amount of essential oils, mine cannot so I don’t recommend it for lash use. However, if you are a DIYer, you can find my brow serum recipe HERE and omit the essential oils or use THIS DIY recipe.

Alternative Lash Serums That Do Not Contain PGAs:

If you’re a brow gal like me, you might want to check out my Brow Post Round Up. This post contains every brow post I’ve ever written including how to shape and dye brows. Dying brows can make a HUGE difference. I don’t go a month without doing it.

My brow serum is 30% off for a very limited time so grab one while they’re on sale and in stock!!

What is beauty maxxing? A guide to the latest self-care trend

Beauty maxxing. This is a beauty trend that’s been making rounds all over our TikTok feed. From videos breaking down “facial harmony” to creators sharing the beauty and wellness techniques they swear by, the trend has become one of social media’s latest beauty obsessions.

At its core, beauty maxxing is about intentionally enhancing your appearance through beauty, wellness and self-care. While the idea of putting your best face forward isn’t new, beauty maxxing is more strategic. Think personalised skincare routines, haircare regimens, strength training, cosmetic dentistry, styling consultations and even aesthetic treatments, all aimed at becoming the “best version” of yourself.

What is beauty maxxing?

For those new to the term, beauty maxxing is an umbrella term used to describe the process of maximising your physical appearance. Borrowed from the internet term “looksmaxxing,” which initially gained popularity in male online communities, beauty maxxing has evolved into a broader movement embraced by women.

Unlike following a specific beauty trend, beauty maxxing encourages taking a holistic approach. It can involve everything from improving your skincare routine and finding a haircut that complements your face shape to investing in healthier habits like quality sleep, regular exercise and proper nutrition. Many creators also distinguish between “soft maxxing” and “hard maxxing.”

Soft maxxing vs. hard maxxing

Soft maxxing focuses on non-invasive changes that enhance your natural features. This could include building a consistent skincare routine, whitening your teeth, finding your signature makeup look, improving your posture, maintaining healthy hair, dressing in colours that flatter your complexion or prioritising sleep and hydration.

Hard maxxing, on the other hand, refers to more permanent or medically driven enhancements. Cosmetic procedures, injectables, orthodontics and plastic surgery often fall into this category.

The benefits of beauty maxxing

When approached mindfully, beauty maxxing can inspire healthier habits that extend far beyond appearance. It often encourages people to establish beauty and wellness routines, and prioritise habits that support overall wellbeing. It can also help people discover what genuinely suits them.

How to approach beauty maxxing in a healthy way

If you’re curious about beauty maxxing, consider treating it as a form of self-care rather than self-correction. Focus on habits that genuinely make you feel good and investing in your overall wellbeing. Instead of asking, “How can I fix myself?” try asking, “What makes me feel my most confident?”

The art of Winter Wellness and the Ubusika Ritual that invites Joburg to slow down…

As Johannesburg settles into its quieter, cooler months, the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff invites guests to embrace winter as a season of restoration rather than retreat. This winter, the hotel introduces its newest signature offering, the Ubusika Ritual, a thoughtfully curated wellness journey inspired by the isiZulu word for winter, ubusika.

Designed to restore warmth, stillness and balance, the ritual combines deeply grounding massage techniques, nourishing skincare and calming scalp therapy, while allowing guests to personalise their experience by choosing from three organic West African shea butter blends. More than a seasonal treatment, it reflects a growing appreciation for intentional self-care, African wellness traditions and the luxury of slowing down.

“There is something about winter that invites us to soften,” says Brenda Magome, Spa Manager at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg. “The days draw in, the rhythm gentles, and the attention we give ourselves becomes more intentional. The Ubusika Ritual was created in that spirit: a generous, layered experience crafted to nurture both body and mind, leaving guests feeling radiant and entirely themselves.”

Beyond the treatment room, guests are encouraged to linger in the spa’s relaxation spaces, enjoy the heated outdoor lap pool, sauna and steam room, or extend their wellness escape with an overnight stay overlooking Johannesburg’s leafy Westcliff hillside. Alongside Ubusika, the Spa’s winter offering also includes the immersive four-hour Ubuhle Nokuphumula ritual and the invigorating African Traveller treatment, creating a collection of experiences designed to meet different wellness needs throughout the season.

We spoke to Brenda Magome about the inspiration behind the Ubusika Ritual, the importance of embracing African wellness traditions, and why winter is the perfect time to slow down, reconnect and prioritise self-care.

As Johannesburg settles into its quieter, cooler months, the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff invites guests to embrace winter as a season of restoration rather than retreat.

GLAMOUR: The Ubusika Ritual is inspired by the Zulu word for winter. How did the concept come about, and what does winter wellness mean to you in the context of Johannesburg’s colder months?

Brenda Magome: The inspiration behind Ubusika came from viewing winter not just as a change of season, but as an invitation to reconnect with ourselves. In isiZulu, ubusika means winter, a time when nature slows down, rests and restores. At Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, we want to invite guests to embrace winter differently. This ritual is about creating a moment of genuine care. It is warmth through touch, comfort through scent, and restoration through time intentionally set aside. It allows guests to step away from the demands of the day and return to themselves feeling renewed.

GLAMOUR: You describe winter as a season that invites us to “soften.” How do you see guests’ wellness needs changing during winter compared to other times of the year?

Brenda: Winter naturally invites us inward. At the Spa, we often see guests seeking treatments that feel more nurturing, grounding, and restorative during this season.

As temperatures cool, the skin often asks for deeper nourishment – skin can become drier, muscles more tense, and many seek an emotional need for rest. This is where winter wellness becomes so powerful. It is not simply about a massage or skincare; it is about creating a full sensory pause, one that allows the body to soften, the mind to settle, and our guests to feel more balanced than when they arrived.

GLAMOUR: The Ubusika Ritual combines massage, skincare and scalp therapy in one journey. What was the thinking behind this layered approach to relaxation and restoration?

Brenda: The Ubusika Ritual was designed as a complete journey, reflecting the idea that true restoration is rarely one-dimensional. Each element cares for a different part of the guest’s wellbeing, while coming together as one thoughtful, sensory ritual.

The skincare element nourishes and replenishes through the guest’s chosen shea butter blend from Terenaka’s natural formulations, each one created for a different mood and effect.

Whether you are drawn to the calming notes of jasmine, geranium, and chamomile, the uplifting freshness of sweet orange and lime, or the deeper nourishment of baobab and mongongo nut oil, the chosen blend helps set the tone for the ritual. It is this thoughtful harmony of touch, scent and mood that makes the experience feel both deeply personal and genuinely restorative.

The art of Winter Wellness and the Ubusika Ritual that invites Joburg to slow down…

GLAMOUR: Personalisation is at the heart of the experience. Could you tell us more about the three shea butter blends and how guests typically choose between African Sunset, African Daybreak and African Storm?

Brenda: Personalisation is one of the most meaningful elements of the Ubusika Ritual, as it invites each guest to begin the experience by tuning into what they need in that moment. These blends come directly from Teranaka’s natural formulations, and each offers a distinct mood and sensory direction.

African Sunset, with jasmine, geranium and chamomile, feels soft and calming, ideal for guests seeking to unwind. African Daybreak, with sweet orange and lime, brings a sense of brightness and renewal, while African Storm, enriched with baobab and mongongo nut oil, offers deeper nourishment and comfort, especially during the colder winter months.

GLAMOUR: The ritual places a strong emphasis on intentional touch and slowing down. Why do you think these elements are increasingly important in today’s fast-paced world?

Brenda: In a world shaped by constant movement, connection and digital noise, moments of true stillness have become increasingly rare. This is why intentional touch sits at the heart of the Ubusika Ritual.

We created this treatment to offer more than physical relaxation. Set within the calm of our hillside Spa, it becomes a moment of presence, where every movement, product and pause is considered with care. Through expert touch, intuitive service and a nurturing environment, guests are invited to step away from the pace of everyday life and return to a deeper sense of balance.

GLAMOUR: The Spa incorporates African ingredients such as mafura butter, baobab, mongongo nut oil, and marula. How important is it for Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff to celebrate local and regional wellness traditions?

Brenda: It is incredibly important. Africa has a rich heritage of natural ingredients and wellness traditions that have been used for generations. For us, luxury wellness should feel rooted in its surroundings. By incorporating these elements, we celebrate Africa’s beauty, wisdom, and resources, allowing guests to connect through scent, touch, and the story behind each ingredient.

GLAMOUR: Beyond the treatment itself, guests are encouraged to linger and enjoy the relaxation spaces, pool, sauna, and steam room. How does this extended spa experience contribute to overall well-being?

Brenda: Wellness doesn’t end in the treatment room. The moments before and after are just as important. After the Ubusika Ritual, guests can ease into the Spa’s serene relaxation spaces, spend time beside the heated lap pool, or enjoy the restorative warmth of the sauna and steam room. These moments allow the body to remain relaxed, the mind to settle, and the benefits of the treatment to unfold more deeply.

For those who wish to savour the experience a little longer, we have just introduced a new Afternoon Tea in the Lobby Lounge & Bar, the perfect place to head to after a morning of relaxation, or extend your overall well-being by checking in and enjoying a well-deserved staycation.

GLAMOUR: Couples can enjoy the Ubusika Ritual side by side in the couples’ suite. Are you seeing growing interest in shared wellness experiences, and what makes them so meaningful?

Brenda: Yes, we are definitely seeing a growing desire for shared wellness experiences, not only between couples, but also between friends, family members, and guests who want to spend time together in a more considered, restorative way. I think a shared ritual creates space for two people to pause, reconnect, and enjoy the quiet luxury of being cared for side by side. It feels calm, intimate, and restorative.

GLAMOUR: Alongside Ubusika, the Spa is offering Ubuhle Nokuphumula and The African Traveller. How do these rituals cater to different wellness goals and guest preferences?

Brenda: Each ritual has its own purpose. Ubusika focuses on winter restoration: warmth and renewal. Ubuhle Nokuphumula is a four-hour indulgence that celebrates beauty and relaxation. The African Traveller is a sensory journey, rooted in Africa’s richness.

Together, these treatments offer different pathways into wellbeing. Whether a guest is looking for calm, indulgence, reconnection or sensory escape, there is a ritual that meets them where they are.

GLAMOUR: What are some of the most common signs that someone may be overdue for a wellness reset, and how can spa rituals help restore balance?

Brenda: The signs are often quiet at first: a sense of fatigue that rest does not fully ease, tension held in the body, or the feeling of moving through the day without being fully present. A spa ritual offers a considered pause. Through intentional touch, calming scents, nourishing products and a peaceful environment, the body is encouraged to release while the mind is given space to settle.

At the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, wellness is approached with intuition and care. The intention is not only to create relaxation in the moment, but to restore a sense of balance that guests can carry with them long after they leave the Spa.

GLAMOUR: Luxury wellness continues to evolve globally. What trends are you seeing among South African spa guests, and how is the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff responding to those expectations?

Brenda: Guests are seeking authentic, meaningful wellness, personalisation, natural ingredients and connection. The Spa responds by offering immersive rituals, tailored to each guest, rooted in Africa’s cultural and botanical richness.

GLAMOUR: For someone considering their first visit to the Spa this winter, what would you say makes the experience at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff uniquely memorable?

Brenda: A first visit to the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg is memorable for the way each detail comes together: the beauty of the setting, the warmth of the welcome, the expertise of our therapists, and the quiet sense of care woven throughout the experience.

Set above the city, the Spa feels removed from the pace of Johannesburg, while still deeply connected to its setting. Guests leave not only feeling relaxed, but with a renewed sense of ease that stays with them long after they depart.

After navigating Johannesburg’s bustling traffic, arriving at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff feels like stepping into another world. The city’s relentless pace fades almost instantly, replaced by birdsong, lush gardens and a sense of quiet that sets the tone for the afternoon ahead.

From the moment I arrive, the hospitality is effortless. A friendly member of staff arranges for a golf cart to whisk me up the winding pathways to the Spa, a thoughtful touch that immediately signals you’re about to leave the outside world behind.

Inside, I’m greeted with a warm welcome drink before completing a short consultation form. Soon after, I’m shown to the beautifully appointed changing room, where every detail has been considered. Plush robes and slippers await, while thoughtful amenities—from a hairdryer to luxury toiletries and even dental hygiene essentials—make it easy to freshen up before or after a treatment.

Before my appointment, I settle into the relaxation lounge overlooking the heated pool. Framed by blue Highveld skies and winter sunshine, the view is as restorative as the spa itself. With a steaming cup of herbal tea in hand, I sink into one of the daybeds, feeling my shoulders begin to drop. It feels as though the weather has conspired to create the perfect backdrop for slowing down.

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff

The experience begins with a soothing foot ritual that gently signals the transition from the outside world into a space of complete relaxation. Then it’s time for the Ubusika Ritual, the Spa’s signature winter treatment inspired by the isiZulu word for winter.

The massage unfolds slowly and intentionally, each movement easing away layers of tension I hadn’t realised I was carrying. Warm, nourishing shea butter glides over my skin, while the therapist’s intuitive touch feels both deeply therapeutic and incredibly calming. The ritual seamlessly combines massage, skincare and scalp therapy, creating a treatment that is as restorative for the mind as it is for the body.

Somewhere between the grounding back massage and the soothing scalp massage, I drift off completel, a sure sign that my body has surrendered to the experience. For a blissful moment, there are no emails to answer, no deadlines to meet and no traffic to battle, only the comforting rhythm of expert hands and the quiet luxury of uninterrupted stillness.

When the treatment comes to an end, I linger in the relaxation area rather than rushing back to reality. It feels fitting that the Spa encourages guests to take their time, whether that means enjoying the heated pool, sauna and steam room, or simply sitting with another cup of tea while the benefits of the treatment continue to unfold.

The Ubusika Ritual is more than a massage; it’s an invitation to embrace winter differently. Rather than resisting the slower pace of the season, it encourages you to lean into it—to pause, reset and reconnect with yourself. By the time I leave, I feel lighter, warmer and noticeably calmer. And as I make my way back into the city, the traffic somehow seems a little easier to face.

Pamela Anderson reveals the four skincare products she swears by at 59

Pamela Anderson reveals the four skincare products she swears by at 59

For decades, Pamela Anderson was synonymous with glamorous Hollywood beauty. Today, however, the 59-year-old actress and model is redefining what beauty looks like by embracing simplicity, self-acceptance and healthy skin over perfection.

In an era dominated by elaborate 10-step skincare routines, cosmetic enhancements and social media beauty trends, Anderson has become an unlikely champion of minimalist skincare.

Her philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: healthy, hydrated skin doesn’t require dozens of products or hours in front of the mirror.

“Less is more,” she says – a mantra that has become the foundation of both her skincare routine and her outlook on ageing.

Beauty begins with acceptance

Rather than viewing ageing as something to resist, Anderson sees it as a natural part of life.

She has repeatedly spoken about rejecting unrealistic beauty standards, choosing instead to care for her skin rather than trying to erase every sign of time.

Instead of referring to the process as ageing, she prefers to call it “life-ing” – embracing each stage of life with confidence and authenticity.

Her message resonates with women who are increasingly seeking realistic, sustainable approaches to beauty instead of unattainable ideals.

Pamela Anderson’s four skincare essentials

After launching her own vegan skincare line featuring just four products, Anderson explained that effective skincare doesn’t have to be complicated.

Her routine focuses on nourishing the skin barrier and maintaining long-lasting hydration.

1. A nourishing lip balm

Lips are often one of the first areas to show visible signs of ageing because they contain no oil glands and have thinner skin than the rest of the face.

Anderson recommends keeping lips continuously hydrated with a nourishing balm. Ingredients such as peptides, hyaluronic acid and collagen can help soften fine lines while improving moisture and giving lips a fuller, smoother appearance over time.

Regular use also helps protect lips from environmental damage and prevents dryness throughout the day.

2. A gentle cleanser

No matter the season, Anderson believes cleansing should remain gentle and consistent.

She washes her face morning and evening using a cleanser formulated with soothing botanical ingredients such as aloe vera, ginger root extract and bisabolol.

These ingredients help calm redness, remove impurities and maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier without stripping away essential oils.

For mature skin, harsh cleansers can contribute to dryness and sensitivity, making a mild formula a far better choice.

3. A hydrating serum

One of Anderson’s biggest skincare priorities is ensuring her skin feels healthy, calm and comfortable.

Immediately after cleansing, she applies a serum while her skin is still slightly damp to maximise hydration.

Serums deliver concentrated active ingredients deeper into the skin than traditional moisturisers.

For mature skin, ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants and niacinamide can help address concerns including dehydration, uneven skin tone, fine lines and loss of elasticity.

4. A rich moisturising cream

If there is one lesson Anderson wishes she had learnt earlier, it is the importance of hydration.

A good moisturising cream locks in moisture, strengthens the skin barrier and helps reduce dryness – one of the most common concerns associated with mature skin.

A richer cream can also double as an overnight treatment, allowing the skin to recover while you sleep and leaving it feeling softer and more supple by morning.

The makeup-free moment that changed the conversation

Paris Fashion Week became the backdrop for one of Anderson’s most talked-about beauty moments when she attended several Spring/Summer shows in October 2023 completely makeup-free.

Appearing bare-faced at presentations including those by Vivienne Westwood, Victoria Beckham and Isabel Marant, Anderson challenged conventional red carpet expectations and sparked global conversations about natural beauty.

She later explained that she simply no longer wanted to spend hours in a makeup chair or compete with unrealistic beauty standards.

Instead, she chose authenticity, finding freedom in showing the world her natural face.

Confidence over perfection

Perhaps Anderson’s greatest beauty secret has nothing to do with skincare products at all.

She has openly shared that she no longer measures herself against her younger self or feels pressured to chase eternal youth.

Instead, she believes that confidence comes from within and that caring for your skin should be about comfort, health and self-respect rather than perfection.

Her approach serves as a reminder that ageing gracefully is less about turning back the clock and more about embracing every chapter with confidence.

asian cabbage rolls

Healthy Sesame Ginger Cabbage Rolls

Once upon a time I was addicted to Chinese food. And I don’t mean real Chinese food; I mean the processed, Americanized version at places like Panda Express. Since switching to real food years ago, I’ve experimented with plenty of delicious and healthy Asian inspired recipes. These sesame ginger cabbage rolls are my latest obsession

They’re packed with veggies and protein and bursting with Asian flavors like toasted sesame oil, ginger, and coconut aminos (like soy sauce). I’ll serve them as appetizers, or more often as part of the main meal. They take just minutes of hands on time and you can make a big batch and store the leftovers for later.

Sesame Ginger Cabbage Rolls

If you love the flavors of dumplings or pot stickers but don’t love the extra work of making wrappers, these cabbage rolls are a great alternative. And while the premade wonton wrappers are fast, they’re not always the cleanest. Napa cabbage is surprisingly tender after a quick blanch and makes a wrapper that’s light and easy to work with. It also adds another serving of vegetables without changing the classic savory filling.

You can use other meats, but I like ground chicken since it doesn’t overpower the other flavors, like ginger and garlic. Plus, it adds a healthy dose of protein. Finely diced shiitake mushrooms blend right into the filling to add an earthy flavor and extra moisture so the chicken stays moist as it cooks.

My favorite part is the dipping sauce though. It brings everything together for a salty, savory dip. Coconut aminos taste like soy sauce, but slightly sweeter (and without the soy). Then there’s the earthy ginger, sesame and chili crisp for a bit of spiciness. Every bite has so much flavor without the ultraprocessed sauces or MSG.

Tips for the Best Cabbage Rolls

One of the biggest tricks to making these is choosing the right cabbage. Napa cabbage has softer, flexible leaves that roll easily after a quick blanch. If the thick white stem feels stiff, simply remove it before filling and rolling. This makes the leaves easier to work with and helps prevent tearing.

You also don’t want to overfill the rolls. About one-third cup of filling is plenty for each leaf and makes rolling much easier. If a leaf does split, it’s an easy fix. Simply overlap another cabbage leaf around it before cooking. Once they’re steamed, no one will notice.

After browning the bottoms for a couple of minutes, I add a little water and cover the pan to let the cabbage steam while the filling cooks through. Remove the lid for the last minute or two to let any remaining liquid evaporate and give the bottoms a little extra texture.

Easy to Customize

These cabbage rolls are easy to adapt with whatever you have on hand. Ground turkey or pork both work well in place of chicken, and shredded carrots add a little natural sweetness and color. If you like more crunch, stir in some finely chopped water chestnuts before rolling everything up.

Leftovers also reheat well, making these a great meal prep option. I store them in the refrigerator for a few days and warm them gently in a covered skillet with a splash of water. They’re just as delicious the next day for lunch or a quick dinner.

We love making homemade pot stickers, but these sesame ginger cabbage rolls have become one of our favorite shortcuts. They have all the savory flavors we love, and the tender cabbage creates a surprisingly satisfying substitute for traditional wonton wrappers.

Healthy Sesame Ginger Cabbage Rolls

These flavorful cabbage rolls feature protein, veggies, and real food ingredients like garlic, ginger, and toasted sesame.

For the Sesame Napa Cabbage Rolls

For the Sesame Coconut Aminos Dipping Sauce

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully separate 8-10 large Napa cabbage leaves and blanch them for about 1 minute, just until softened and flexible enough to roll without tearing. Transfer the leaves to an ice bath or a plate to cool and pat dry with paper towels. If needed, trim the thickest portion of the stem with a knife so the leaves roll more easily.

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, shiitake mushrooms, garlic, green onions, coconut aminos, toasted sesame oil, ginger, rice vinegar, and white pepper. Mix until everything is evenly incorporated, being careful not to overwork the meat.

  • Lay a cabbage leaf flat on your work surface. Place approximately 1/3 cup of filling near the stem end of the leaf. Fold the sides inward and roll tightly, similar to a burrito or spring roll. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.

  • Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the pan and cook for about 2 minutes until lightly golden on the bottom. Add ¼ cup water to the skillet and immediately cover with a lid. Steam for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Remove the lid and continue cooking for another 1 to 2 minutes to allow any remaining liquid to evaporate and the bottoms to crisp slightly.

  • While the rolls cook, whisk together the coconut aminos, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, chili crisp, honey, ginger, garlic, and sesame seeds.

  • Serve immediately with the dipping sauce on the side.

The Ultimate Christmas in July Gift Guide

The Ultimate Christmas in July Gift Guide

If you’re anything like me, you know that the best handmade gifts can’t always be made at the last minute. Some projects—like cold process soap—need weeks to cure, while others simply take time to gather supplies, create, and package with care. That’s exactly why I love celebrating Christmas in July. It’s the perfect excuse to start planning for a handmade holiday without the stress of a December rush.

Over the years, we’ve hosted some unforgettable Christmas in July gatherings, complete with hilarious White Elephant exchanges that have become family legends. (Yes, the giant Christmas sweater and that infamous pair of underwear made the rounds for years!) Those memories are part of what makes this tradition so much fun.

Whether you’re planning your own Christmas in July celebration or you’re simply someone who likes to get a head start on holiday gift-making, this guide is filled with ideas to inspire you.

Inside, you’ll find handmade gift ideas, natural products I genuinely love, trusted companies I enjoy supporting, and time-tested DIY recipes that are perfect for gifting. I’ve also included a few special splurge-worthy finds if you’re looking to treat someone—or yourself—to something extra special.

From healthy ingredients and beautiful handcrafted products to DIY gifts you can start making today, there’s something here for every maker and every gift list.

Now, let’s dive in and start planning a handmade holiday you’ll actually enjoy creating.

1. Gold Jewelry for Gifting

I actually love the combination of handmade with something polished. It’s an earthy, yet elegant look that’s natural and classy at the same time. Whether it’s a delicate necklace, a pair of simple earrings, or a meaningful bracelet, jewelry has a way of becoming part of someone’s everyday life and become even more special if they are high-quality pieces that are passed down from generation to generation.

If you’re looking for a gift that feels both elegant and personal, this gold jewelry is a wonderful choice. It’s perfect for moms, sisters, friends, teachers, or anyone who appreciates classic style that will last for years to come.

2. Handmade Holiday Soap Recipes

Homemade soap is one of my favorite gifts to make because it’s both beautiful and practical. The only catch is that many cold process soaps need four to six weeks to cure, making Christmas in July the perfect time to start creating.

Whether you love festive scents, herbal ingredients, or naturally colored bars, making soap ahead of time means you’ll have plenty of gorgeous gifts ready when the holidays arrive. Package them with ribbon, kraft paper, or a handmade label for an extra special touch. You can also try some from my shop now.

3. Luxurious Lotion for Gifts

A rich, nourishing lotion is always a welcome gift during the colder months. Homemade lotions made with quality oils and butters feel incredibly luxurious while giving friends and family something they’ll actually use every day.

From lightweight lotions to rich body creams, there are plenty of recipes to suit every skin type. Pair a handmade lotion with coordinating soap or lip balm to create a beautiful spa-inspired gift set. Make your own with my recipes or get some from my shop.

4. Handmade Soap for Men

Finding thoughtful gifts for the men in your life doesn’t have to be difficult. Handmade soaps with earthy, woodsy, citrus, or spicy scents make practical gifts that feel just a little more special than anything you’ll find on a store shelf.

These soaps are perfect for husbands, dads, brothers, grandfathers, or coworkers. Add them to a gift basket with a shaving brush, beard oil, or handcrafted wooden soap dish for a gift that’s both useful and memorable.

5. Herbal Lip Balm Recipes

Lip balm is one of those small gifts that everyone appreciates. They’re inexpensive to make, easy to customize, and perfect for stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, party favors, or adding to larger gift baskets.

Using nourishing oils, beeswax, and herbal infusions creates lip balms that feel wonderful while avoiding unnecessary ingredients. Once you start making your own, you’ll probably find yourself keeping a few extras for your own purse or pocket, too.

6. Facial and Body Scrubs

Sugar and salt scrubs make wonderful homemade gifts because they’re quick to create and instantly feel like a little luxury. They’re perfect for encouraging a little self-care during the busy holiday season.

From gentle facial scrubs to exfoliating body scrubs scented with essential oils, there are endless ways to customize them. Package them in reusable glass jars with festive labels, and you’ll have a gift that’s both beautiful and practical.

7. Homemade Candles

Few things create a cozy holiday atmosphere quite like a beautiful, naturally scented candle. Making your own allows you to choose natural waxes, favorite fragrances, and containers that match your personal style.

Candles make wonderful standalone gifts or can be paired with soap, lotion, tea, or a favorite book for a thoughtful gift basket. They’re one of those handmade gifts that people enjoy long after the holidays are over.

8. Diffuser Oil Blends

Essential oil diffuser blends are a simple way to fill a home with comforting seasonal aromas. Whether you enjoy warm spices, fresh evergreens, bright citrus, or calming lavender, creating custom blends lets you personalize every gift.

Bottle your favorite combinations in small glass bottles with handwritten labels or include printable blend recipes alongside a diffuser. They’re thoughtful gifts for anyone who enjoys creating a peaceful, welcoming home.

9. Homemade Herbal Teas

There’s something comforting about curling up with a warm cup of herbal tea on a cold winter evening. Homemade tea blends are easy to customize using dried herbs, flowers, and spices, making them a thoughtful gift for friends and family.

Package loose-leaf blends in glass jars, reusable tea tins, or kraft bags with brewing instructions and a handwritten note. Pair them with a favorite mug, local honey, or homemade cookies for a cozy gift that’s sure to be appreciated throughout the season.

Gift Baskets

If you’re wondering how to put these all together, then consider making a few different categories and making a gift basket. Gift baskets are incredibly popular around the holidays because they let you combine several small handmade items into one thoughtful gift.

There are many times throughout the year to create gift baskets. Some great ideas include:

  • New neighbor welcome basket
  • Spa gift basket (soap, lotion, lip balm, scrub, candle)
  • Tea lover’s basket (herbal tea, mug, honey, candle)
  • Men’s grooming basket
  • Hostess gift basket

Make all of your gifts or find Handmade Gifts in my Shop.

Handmade Gift Packaging Ideas

Presentation makes handmade gifts feel even more special.

Include ideas like:

  • Kraft boxes
  • Mason jars
  • Muslin bags
  • Twine and dried orange slices
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Handmade gift tags
  • Wax seals
  • Reusable baskets
