K-Beauty doesn’t always work for Indian skin: Dermatologist explains how to safely adapt Korean skincare trends

Korean skincare has gained massive popularity worldwide, with terms like glass skin, skin flooding, and 10-step routines becoming part of everyday beauty conversations. From sheet masks to snail mucin and fermented ingredients, Korean beauty or K-beauty, promises glowing, hydrated, flawless skin. But an important question remains: Are Korean skincare trends truly suitable for Indian skin? The answer is not a simple yes or no.

“Skincare trends can be exciting, but healthy skin is not achieved by copying routines blindly. What works for one skin type or climate may not necessarily suit another,” Dermatologist Dr Nivedita Dadu of Dadu Medical Centre, tells Health Shots.

Indian and Korean skin are not the same

Skin concerns are shaped by genetics, climate, lifestyle, and environmental exposure. Korean skincare is largely designed around East Asian skin types and cooler, less humid environments. Indian skin, on the other hand, has its own unique characteristics.

Indian skin usually contains higher melanin levels, which provide some natural protection against sun damage but also make it more prone to pigmentation, tanning, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

This means even minor acne or irritation can leave behind stubborn dark marks. At the same time, many parts of India experience intense heat, humidity, pollution, and prolonged sun exposure, all of which significantly influence skincare needs.

Why does K-beauty appeal to so many?

One reason Korean skincare has become popular is its focus on prevention and hydration. Unlike harsh skincare routines that aggressively target flaws, K-beauty emphasises maintaining the skin barrier and supporting long-term skin health. Hydrating toners, lightweight essences, ceramide-based moisturisers, and sunscreen are often beneficial for many skin types, including Indian skin.

“Korean skincare introduced people to the importance of hydration and barrier repair, which are valuable concepts in dermatology,” says Dr Dadu. However, appreciating the philosophy does not mean every trend should be adopted without thought.

How to use Korean skincare trends safely?

Please note these pointers before trying anything on your own:

  • Many people attempt elaborate Korean routines seen online without understanding their own skin condition.
  • A 10-step routine may sound luxurious, but layering multiple products can overwhelm the skin, especially in India’s hot, humid weather. Excessive layering may lead to clogged pores, irritation, breakouts, or increased oiliness.
  • People with acne-prone or sensitive skin often make the mistake of experimenting with multiple active ingredients at once, assuming that more products mean better results.
  • In reality, overdoing skincare can compromise the skin barrier and trigger inflammation.

Pigmentation and acne need special attention

Another big differences between Korean and Indian skin concerns is the frequency of pigmentation disorders. Indian patients commonly struggle with melasma, tanning, acne marks, and uneven skin tone. While many Korean products prioritise glow and hydration, they may not always address these concerns effectively.

For Indian skin, ingredients such as niacinamide, azelaic acid, retinoids, vitamin C, and carefully prescribed pigmentation treatments often play a more central role. Similarly, acne management must be personalised. Viral skincare products promoted online may not suit acne-prone Indian skin and can sometimes worsen breakouts.

Sunscreen matters more than trends

If there is one skincare lesson Indian consumers should prioritise, it is sunscreen. Sun exposure remains one of the leading causes of pigmentation, premature ageing, and skin damage. While Korean sunscreens are often praised for their elegant textures, the most effective sunscreen is ultimately the one that suits your skin and is used consistently. “People chase trending products but neglect daily sun protection. No skincare routine can succeed without sunscreen,” Dr Dadu explains.

Keep skincare simple and personalised

Healthy skin does not depend on following social media trends or owning dozens of products.

A practical skincare routine for most Indian skin types usually includes:

  • A gentle cleanser
  • A moisturiser suited to the skin type
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • Targeted treatments only when required

The focus should remain on skin health rather than chasing perfection.

“Korean skincare offers useful ideas, but skincare should never be trend-driven. Understanding your own skin and choosing treatments suited to Indian conditions will always give better and safer results than copying routines seen online,” concluded Dr Nivedita Dadu.

Dewy, Not Sweaty! Here’s How To Achieve A Minimal Everyday Summer Makeup Look That Doesn’t Melt

You step out looking fresh, glowing and within minutes, the heat has other plans. Makeup starts to melt, your T-zone gets shiny, and suddenly that full-face routine feels like a bad idea.

Summer beauty is all about keeping it light, fresh, and breathable, and that’s exactly where the minimal, no-makeup makeup look comes in. Think glowing skin, soft definition, and products that work with your skin, not against it.

Step-by-step everyday Summer makeup look

Step 1: Start with skincare (this is non-negotiable)

Great makeup begins with great skin prep. Cleanse your face and follow up with a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser. The real hero? Sunscreen. Opt for a non-greasy SPF that won’t leave a white cast. This step not only protects your skin but also creates a smooth base for everything that follows.

Step 2: Swap heavy foundation for tinted moisturiser

Ditch full-coverage foundations in summer. Instead, go for a tinted moisturiser or skin tint with SPF. It evens out your complexion while letting your natural skin show through, giving you that effortless, “your skin but better” finish.

Step 3: Spot-conceal, don’t layer

If you need extra coverage, use a lightweight concealer only where necessary like under the eyes, around the nose, or on blemishes. Blend it well so it melts seamlessly into your skin without looking cakey.

Step 4: Add a natural flush

Cream or liquid blush is your best friend in summer. Dab a little onto your cheeks (and even eyelids for a monochrome look) for a fresh, dewy glow. You can also use a lip-and-cheek tint or a trendy glow balm to keep things minimal and cohesive.

Step 5: Keep the eyes simple

Skip heavy eyeshadow. A quick curl of your lashes followed by a coat of waterproof mascara instantly opens up your eyes without feeling heavy. If you like a bit more definition, a soft brown liner smudged along the lash line works perfectly.

Step 6: Hydrated, glossy lips

Swap matte lipsticks for tinted balms, glosses, or lip oils. They keep your lips moisturised while adding a hint of colour, perfect for that effortless summer vibe.

Step 7: Lock it in (lightly)

If you have oily skin, lightly set your T-zone with a translucent powder. Finish with a hydrating setting spray to keep everything in place without losing that dewy finish.

Pro tips to keep it from melting

Stick to cream-based products, they blend better and look more natural

Choose long-wear or waterproof formulas where possible

Blot, don’t pile on powder, during the day

Keep your routine minimal with less product for less meltdown

The goal? Skin that looks fresh, not masked. Because in summer, less really is more.

Personalised Skin Protocols: Why One-Size-Fits-All Skincare Doesn’t Work Anymore | Beauty News

Personalised Skin Protocols: Why One-Size-Fits-All Skincare Doesn’t Work Anymore | Beauty News

Last Updated:November 26, 2025, 13:59 IST

Dermatologist explains why one-size-fits-all routines fail and how personalised skincare protocols are transforming skin health, longevity, and results.

No two skins are identical. Your genes, hormones, climate, stress levels, diet, sleep, and past treatments all shape how your skin behaves and ages

Personalised skin protocols are no longer a luxury; they are fast becoming the only sensible way to care for skin in 2025. As Dr Jaspreet Kour, Dermatologist, Mediglo explains, “I see every day how ‘one size fits all’ skincare fails real people with real, unique skin.”

Why one routine can’t suit all

No two skins are identical. Your genes, hormones, climate, stress levels, diet, sleep, and past treatments all shape how your skin behaves and ages. Yet, mass-market routines still group everyone into broad labels like dry, oily, or sensitive and sell the same formulas to millions.

This is why some people break out with a “universal” moisturizer, others develop irritation from popular actives, and many feel they are constantly switching products without lasting results.

Global beauty trends clearly show a move towards hyper-personalisation. Brands and clinics are using tools like AI skin analysis, lifestyle questionnaires, and even DNA-based insights to design routines tailored to an individual’s skin biology, environment, and goals.

At the same time, there is a shift from quick fixes to “skin longevity” focusing on keeping skin healthy, resilient, and functional for as long as possible, rather than simply chasing the next anti-ageing cream. This means modern skincare is becoming more medical, data-driven, and prevention-focused.

From ‘anti-ageing’ to skin longevity

The conversation has moved beyond lines and wrinkles to the deeper science of how skin ages. New research highlights the importance of protecting DNA, reducing chronic inflammation, supporting the skin barrier, and encouraging repair at a cellular level.

Evidence-based skin longevity protocols typically combine daily sun protection, antioxidants, and retinoids with targeted in-clinic treatments like lasers and energy devices, adjusted to an individual’s age, skin type, and tolerance.

Tailored personalised protocols

At Mediglo Clinic, Dr Jaspreet Kour emphasises that the starting point is never a product, it is the person. Each protocol is built after a detailed analysis of skin type, concerns (acne, pigmentation, rosacea, ageing, sensitivity), medical history, lifestyle, and local environmental stressors such as UV and pollution.

Depending on the case, a patient’s plan may integrate dermatology (for conditions like acne or eczema), medical-grade skincare, aesthetic treatments, and wellness interventions such as nutrition, sleep, and stress management to support skin from within. This integrated model aligns with global trends where dermatology, aesthetics, wellness, and longevity are converging into one continuum of care.

Why personalised care matters now

The personalised skincare market is projected to grow rapidly over the coming decade, reflecting how strongly people are demanding solutions that respect their individuality. Relying on a generic routine in this era is like wearing someone else’s prescription glasses and expecting perfect vision.

As Dr Kour shares, “My message is simple: your skin deserves a protocol as unique as you are. When skincare is personalised, it stops being trial-and-error and becomes a clear, scientific roadmap towards long-term skin health and confidence.”

Dermatologist-Approved Anti-Ageing Treatments for Men: What Works & What Doesn’t

Dermatologist-Approved Anti-Ageing Treatments for Men: What Works & What Doesn’t

Skin is the largest multifunctional organ of the body, yet it still gets neglected when it comes to anti-ageing treatments for men. Generally, it is considered that skincare and anti-ageing treatments only resonate with women, but with changing social phenomena, men are also understanding the importance of healthy skin, which brings glow as a bonus. Due to several lifestyle and environmental factors, anti-ageing treatments have become a necessity. These aim to slow down the visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, dark spots, age spots, and damaged skin.

As anti-ageing treatments for men are blooming, we spoke to Dr Pranjal Joshi, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon, Varsity Skin & Wellness Clinic in Malviya Nagar. He explains the major concerns for men regarding ageing and the most suitable treatments.

Major Skin Concerns for Men Regarding Ageing

According to reports, men skin requires more hydration than women because of the higher thickness and sebum production, along with rough skin due to regular shaving. Dr Pranjal Joshi shared that the major skin concerns for men regarding ageing are dull skin, fine lines, under-eye bags, and poor skin elasticity.

“Due to higher levels of testosterone, male skin tends to lean more on the oily, thicker side with larger-than-normal pores. Post-shave irritation is also a concern, which results in damaged skin tissues, making it not just rough but also dark and dull,” mentioned Dr Joshi.

Poor lifestyle habits, such as smoking and eating junk food, and increased air pollution, have drastically changed the skin tissues’ life cycle, resulting in faster ageing. Although women are known to start anti-ageing skincare first, men are typically the last to take noticeable action.

Do Men Need To Buy Specific Skincare?

Reports indicate that men do not need to buy specifically men skincare products, as the ingredients in the products are mostly the same with women skin skincare products. Dr Joshi underlined the same saying that skincare brands market male-specific products, but it’s typically not necessary to buy products labelled for men.

“More important than the label on the product is the efficacy of the active ingredients in the formulation. A basic skincare routine, which includes retinol, Vitamin C, and sunscreen, is necessary and important to use,” said Dr Joshi.

Today, more and more men want healthy and youthful skin, and hence, explore different anti-ageing treatments and skincare products. This has also fuelled the market for skincare products. Dr Joshi suggests understanding your skin type and opting for a general, simpler, and healthier skincare routine instead of going for any specific approach.

Anti-Ageing Treatments For Men

While there is a lot of information and misinformation available online, some anti-ageing treatments are quite effective, while others are gimmicky or overhyped at best. It is important to understand what really works or doesn’t work so that one may choose the most effective option and build a long-lasting and efficient skincare strategy. Dr Joshi shared the anti-ageing treatments that genuinely work and those that don’t.

What Work

Retinoids

When we talk about anti-ageing, retinoids are the gold standard. They help with the production of collagen, brighten the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and contribute to the improvement of skin texture. Dr Joshi said, “Retinol is available in different forms. Some mild forms are available over the counter, while the stronger formulations may only be available upon prescription and provide stronger results.” For retinol to work effectively, consistency is the key, and significant improvement is typically observed in 2-3 months.

Sunscreen

Dermatologists all across the globe consider sunscreen as the most basic and effective anti-ageing product. “Around 80% of visible skin ageing happens because of UV radiation-induced skin damage. Regular sunscreen use with an SPF of 30 or higher prevents skin ageing and associated signs such as wrinkles, dark spots, and even something as grave as skin cancer,” Dr Joshi stated. Hence, for those men who tend to spend a lot of time outdoors or drive often, the use of sunscreen is non-negotiable.

Vitamin C-based Serums

Serums that are enriched with Vitamin C help with skin brightening by reducing pigmentation and offering protection against free radical-induced damage. “Men, especially in their 30s and 40s, should incorporate it into their daily morning skincare routine,” Dr Joshi stated.

Clinic-based Procedures

Dr Joshi highlights that for the treatment of wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven tone, treatments like chemical peels, micro-needling, and lasers work effectively. The more effective and stronger treatments include the use of neuromodulators and dermal fillers, which can help achieve a much younger appearance in a relatively short period of time.

What Do Not Work

Anti-Ageing Face Washes

There are many face washes available in the market that claim to be effective at providing an anti-ageing effect. However, as shared by Dr Joshi, face washes do not stay long enough on the face to provide any effective skincare benefits.

Face Yoga

Yoga for various facial expressions is routinely advertised as a miracle; however, the science behind its long-term anti-ageing benefits is absolutely lacking. Practising yoga regularly provides significant health benefits and helps keep you feeling young, but it does not work as an anti-ageing treatment.

Cosmetic Products with Unclear Formulations

Many creams manufactured by cosmetic brands market non-scientific formulations, but they do not effectively work as an anti-ageing treatment. Dr Joshi noted, “Using multiple formulations, albeit in very low concentrations, does not work at all. It is not the brand that works but the molecules such as retinoids, peptides, and antioxidants that help.”

Home-based LED Mask Devices

The home-based LED devices are going viral on social media, trending with claims of magical responses; however, doctors suggest that they work in very modest ways or are absolutely ineffective.

Using an effective home-care regimen along with intermittent use of clinic-based medical treatments yields the best results for men looking for anti-ageing skincare treatments.

Bottom Line

With the changing times and awareness, men are becoming more accepting and responsive towards anti-ageing treatments. However, several brands are marketing their gimmicky products that are actually modestly or zero effective. Before using any products, it is important to check the ingredients in the product.
