What is PDRN skincare? The K-beauty trend that promises glass skin

What is PDRN skincare? The K-beauty trend that promises glass skin

Polynucleotides are one of the fastest growing aesthetic treatments of the past half-decade. In fact, according to one report by Two Face Aesthetics, Google Trends has shown a significant increase in searches for the procedure – 1,566% more, to be exact.

Perfectly in line with our continued evolving taste in more natural-looking injectables that boost longevity and skin wellbeing overall (rather than ‘obvious’ enhancements), polynucleotides help with hydration, collagen production, skin repair, and regeneration.

However, as with all injectables, there is a cost associated with these procedures – and they’re not exactly affordable. Considering most patients will require two to three appointments to really reap the rewards from their treatment, the financial implications of signing up to these can often deter beauty fans.

Luckily, you’ve got alternatives if you want to achieve that revered polynucleotides glow. While topical products won’t offer the depth and longevity that injectables can, they are a great place to start, and the rise of PDRN-powered products are proof of this.

Beloved by derms and doctors (and rumoured to be used by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston), this is an ingredient you should take note of if you’re looking to unveil stronger, healthier skin.

What is PDRN and how can it benefit your skin?

PDRN is an acronym for PolyDeoxyRiboNucleotide, which is a DNA fragment typically derived from fish like salmon or trout. It is a form of polynucleotide with a slightly lower molecular weight, and can be used in aesthetic treatments or at-home skincare routines.

“When injected, PDRN stimulates fibroblasts, cells responsible for producing collagen and repairing damaged skin. In skincare it’s gaining popularity for its restorative and soothing effects, even when used in topical form,” explains Dr Christine Hall, Aesthetic Doctor and Korean skincare expert at Taktouk Clinic.

PDRN – which first gained traction and popularity in South Korea – has been hailed for its skin healing and regenerative properties, both in a medical and cosmetic sense.

When used topically as part of your skincare routine, it can do everything from boosting hydration, increasing collagen production (hence, aiding in anti-ageing), brightening, and improving skin tone, texture and resilience.

“It hydrates the skin, reduces inflammation and helps to support the skin’s natural repair processes,” notes Dr Hall. “These effects are particularly valuable for compromised or post-procedure skin where it can aid recovery and improve skin texture and comfort.”

Can PDRN replace polynucleotides treatments?

In short, yes and no. In terms of skin penetration, there’s no contest between injectable absorption of PDRN and topical application, the experts agree. “It won’t penetrate as deeply or work as dramatically as injectables,” says Cosmetic Doctor Dr Raquel Amado.

“Results may take longer and be less pronounced,” when using PDRN skincare, she adds. This is largely due to PDRN’s larger molecular size, meaning it cannot penetrate as deeply when applied at the surface versus injected beneath. However, she says, “while it won’t deliver the same depth of regeneration since it cannot penetrate the skin barrier effectively, it can still offer visible improvements in hydration, calmness and surface repair.”

It therefore “provides a more affordable and non-invasive alternative to injectable treatments,” and is “a worthwhile addition to a skincare routine, particularly for maintaining skin health and supporting recovery.”

In addition, PDRN topical application can be a great complementary skincare addition for those attending Polynucleotides appointments. Together, they can offer the best possible results.

“Polynucleotides (PNs) are longer DNA chains with deep regenerative abilities. PDRN, being a shorter fragment, acts more rapidly and is easier to absorb topically,” explains Dr Amado.

“When combined, PDRN can be used between injectable PN treatments to maintain and enhance effects. It can prep the skin before procedures, improving skin condition and tolerance, and works synergistically to amplify wound healing, hydration, and collagen synthesis.”

Who can use PDRN skincare?

Luckily, PDRN is well-tolerated by most, and because it’s an ingredient that’s used to hydrate and heal skin, it’s relatively gentle. In saying that, there are some who may wish to steer clear of it. For example, due to the fact it is derived from fish like salmon, anyone with a fish allergy will find it not to be suitable. In addition, says Dr Hall, “it may also not be appropriate for vegans, vegetarians, or those with religious or ethical concerns regarding animal-derived ingredients.”

Dr Amado adds that those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, immunocompromised or experiencing severe skin conditions, should always consult a doctor before trying the ingredient.

How to use PDRN in your routine

As PDRN is all about hydration, rejuvenation and healing, it’s best to try a leave-on product like a serum or cream – note too that serums are often the greatest vehicles for delivery as they can penetrate more deeply into the skin due to their make-up of smaller molecule sizes. Korean skincare brands are known for their inclusion of PDRN, making them a great place to start.

Chrome Makeup

The Most Wearable Way To Rock The Chrome Makeup Trend

Photo via @sydneyjharper

Cool-toned makeup dominated 2025 as the beauty scene leaned into moodier, goth-adjacent aesthetics. And as we settle into the new year, that energy is still going strong. One of the most standout looks leading the way is chrome makeup, a futuristic take on icy silvers that feels fresh and surprisingly wearable. If you’re usually loyal to warm neutrals and don’t know where to start, this look is your entry point. It’s beginner-friendly, night-out ready, and strikes the perfect balance between subtle shimmer and full-on drama. Expect glowing skin and metallic lids that turns heads without weighing you down. Ahead, the step-by-step breakdown to get the chrome effect right.

Base

Start with a base that acts as both skincare and primer, e.g. the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, to give your skin a luminous, hydrated glow. Apply a light layer of high-coverage foundation, being careful not to overdo it so the skin still looks natural and fresh. Apply concealer only where you need brightness or coverage. Lightly set the under-eye area with powder, then add a touch of bronzer to the forehead and cheekbones for warmth. You can skip blush entirely or apply just a hint, blending it softly into the bronzer for a seamless gradient. Finish with a light mist of setting spray before moving on.

Eyes

Groom and fill in your brows, keeping them clean and softly defined. To begin the eye look, blend a dusting of medium gray eyeshadow into the crease to create depth. Next comes the chrome hero product. For a smooth, liquid-metal finish, opt for a chrome eyeshadow like Danessa Myricks Colorfix. If you prefer a more textured, high-impact sparkle, a glitter formula like Make Up For Ever Cream Eyeshadow delivers that signature shine. Line the waterline with eyeliner and curl your lashes. This pared-back approach keeps the focus on the reflective silver tones. Finish with minimal, neutral lips to avoid competing with the eyes – we love a creamy nude lipstick topped with high-shine gloss.

This wearable take on chrome makeup is such a fun way to switch things up!

From Geishas To Glass Skin: Why An Ancient Asian Ingredient Is Skincare’s Hottest Trend | Lifestyle News

From Geishas To Glass Skin: Why An Ancient Asian Ingredient Is Skincare’s Hottest Trend | Lifestyle News

Last Updated:January 31, 2026, 13:31 IST

Rice-based products tend to suit a wide range of skin types, especially those dealing with dryness, sensitivity, or dullness.

You don’t need a complete overhaul to add rice to your skincare routine; a simple rice water–based toner is a good starting point. (Representative image: AI-generated)

Rice has always been more than just a staple food across Asia. For centuries, it has been used for beauty and skin care purposes, long before the social media trend popularised its serum, sheet masks and other products.

Today, as the beauty world chases “glass skin” and gentle, effective ingredients, rice has re-emerged as an unlikely hero. What was once passed down through tradition is now being validated by modern science, turning an ancient beauty secret into one of skincare’s hottest trends.

The Story Of Rice In Beauty

Centuries ago in Japan, geishas relied on rice water to soothe their skin after long hours of wearing heavy makeup.

The practice was simple: rice was washed or soaked, and the milky water was saved and used on the skin and hair.

Over time, women noticed that their hands felt softer, their skin calmer, and their complexion clearer.

In Korea, rice bran and rice oil were similarly prized for their nourishing and brightening qualities, especially in royal households.

These rituals were not labelled as “skincare routines” back then; they were everyday practices rooted in observation and experience.

What Makes Rice Suitable For Skin Care

The renewed interest in rice is not driven by nostalgia alone. Scientists and dermatologists now understand that rice contains compounds that genuinely benefit the skin.

It is rich in antioxidants that help protect against environmental stress, while natural vitamins and amino acids support hydration and skin repair. Rice bran oil, in particular, is known for its ability to nourish dry skin and improve softness without clogging pores.

This combination makes rice especially appealing for people who want visible results without harsh activities. Instead of aggressively exfoliating or stripping the skin, rice-based ingredients work gently, supporting the skin’s natural functions over time.

From Homemade Rituals To Modern Formulations

The beauty industry’s rediscovery of rice did not begin in laboratories, but it began online.  DIY rice water routines flooded social media, with users claiming brighter, calmer skin after just a few weeks.

While these homemade methods reflect traditional practices, they also come with risks. Improperly stored rice water can spoil quickly, and uncontrolled fermentation may irritate sensitive skin.

Skincare brands took inspiration from these rituals and refined them, producinga range of products from toners and serums, to sheet masks and moisturisers under controlled conditions of laboratories.

What Makes Rice Effective In Skincare

Dermatologists largely agree that rice-derived ingredients can be beneficial, particularly for hydration, mild brightening, and soothing sensitive skin.

Studies suggest that compounds found in rice help strengthen the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss, which is key to achieving that sought-after “glass skin” look.

However, experts are careful to manage expectations. Rice isn’t a miracle ingredient that can erase deep pigmentation, acne scars, or signs of ageing overnight. Instead, it works best as a supportive ingredient—one that enhances skin health gradually and complements stronger actives when needed.

What Makes Rice Popular In Skin Care

Rice in skincare isn’t just another fleeting beauty fad. It is likely to stay in the skincare industry because it is not a new invention, but a traditional practice that has been recalibrated in modern laboratories.

Its traditional roots, simple ingredient profile, and natural appeal make people more comfortable choosing it as part of their skincare routine.

In an era of complex chemical formulations, rice offers simplicity and comfort. It aligns perfectly with the minimalist skincare movement, where fewer products with gentle ingredients are preferred over aggressive routines.

Cultural curiosity plays a role, too. As Korean and Japanese beauty philosophies gain global attention, traditional ingredients like rice are being reintroduced to a wider audience. Add the influence of social media, where glowing skin routines go viral overnight, and rice’s comeback feels almost inevitable.

How You Can Add Rice To Your Routine

Rice-based products tend to suit a wide range of skin types, especially those dealing with dryness, sensitivity, or dullness. Because the ingredient is naturally gentle, it’s often recommended for people whose skin reacts poorly to strong actives.

That said, those with severe acne or stubborn pigmentation may need additional treatments alongside rice-infused products for visible results.

Incorporating rice into a skincare routine doesn’t require a complete overhaul. A rice-based toner can be a good starting point, followed by a moisturiser or serum that contains rice extract or rice bran oil.

Used consistently, these products help improve hydration and overall skin texture. As with any skincare routine, sunscreen remains essential, especially when using products aimed at brightening the skin.

2026 must haves: Skin Renewal’s trend forecast

2026 must haves: Skin Renewal’s trend forecast

From 2025’s skincare heroes to 2026’s game changers, one thing became beautifully clear, skincare has grown up. Quick fixes quietly stepped aside while science led care took the lead, delivering real change you can see and feel. At Skin Renewal, this shift feels natural, because it mirrors how we have always cared for skin, with medical insight, innovation and a long-term view of true skin health.

Throughout 2025, we witnessed remarkable transformations across our branches. Thoughtfully formulated home care became trusted daily companions, while advanced in branch treatments like the Pearl Fractional Laser proved to be true standouts. What made the biggest difference was not just the technology, but the magic that happens when professional treatments and intelligent topicals work together.

At the heart of this success is one of Skin Renewal’s core pillars of ageing well, results driven multifunctional home care. With the expansion of our topical range in 2025 and exciting innovations ahead, it is clear that skin transformation does not end when you leave the treatment room. Our purpose remains bringing the world’s best medical aesthetic advances to South African skin, every step of the way.

Some of 2025’s proven winners continue to shine. Our hero topicals work beneath the surface, supporting skin function, repairing barriers, and encouraging renewal, not simply improving appearance.

The Triple Ceramide Hydrating Complex became a go-to for restoring comfort and hydration.

Acne Relief Complex continued to change the lives of those struggling with breakouts by addressing oil control, inflammation, and healing in one intelligent formula.

Tri Peptide Brightening Complex gently corrected stubborn pigmentation while soothing sensitivity and supporting youthful skin.

Age Defying Complex delivered visible radiance and firmness through a powerful blend of vitamin C, peptides, and hydration. And this is only the beginning.

In the branch, our treatment portfolio continued to raise the bar. Pearl Fractional Laser became essential for texture, tone, and pore refinement. Endymed FSR stood out for acne scarring and uneven skin, while Laser Genesis remained a favourite for building collagen and glow over time. Microneedling proved once again that versatility and consistency deliver powerful results. Pico Laser impressed with fast, safe pigmentation correction across all skin tones.

Looking ahead, excitement is building with the arrival of Ultraformer MPT, an advanced non-invasive ultrasound treatment delivering visible lifting, tightening, and glow with results that continue to improve over weeks and last for many months. It represents the next evolution of refined rejuvenation with comfort at its core.

As we move into 2026, the future lies in smarter synergy. Doctor-led treatments paired with advanced Skin Renewal formulations allow skin to be prepared, transformed, and maintained more efficiently, often with fewer sessions and greater results. Personalised protocols remain our foundation, combining clinical precision with Dr Maureen Allem’s formulations for outcomes that feel powerful, natural, and sustainable.

As the year unfolds, global insight will continue to guide us. One of the first major medical aesthetic congresses of 2026, IMCAS, brings together the world’s leading innovations and research. Skin Renewal CEO and co-founder Victor Snyders and our procurement team will be sharing key insights from the event across our platforms, helping you stay informed and future-proof your skin journey.

At Skin Renewal, the glow up is never about chasing trends. It is about science, consistency, and care. And as we step into 2026, the future of skin health has never looked brighter.

Preventative approach to ageing and more – 2026 skincare trend forecast

There have been numerous changes in the skincare industry, both locally and globally.

The year 2025 has taught us a lot when it comes to beauty. We’ve toned down on excessive filler and have embraced Botox. Our aesthetics procedures have become less invasive and we continue to seek minimal downtime and unnessesary discomfort.

Now, as the skincare shifts toward science-led personalisation, Dr Danielle Gounder, co-founder of Skin-Recode in Cape Town, shares her expert insights on what’s ahead for 2026.

A year for deeper, smarter and more connected

“[The year] 2026 builds firmly on these foundations – where skincare intersects with metabolic health, neurocosmetics and zero-waste ethics,” Dr Danielle predicts. “Intelligent simplicity and emotional wellbeing will anchor innovation.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neurocosmetics: where skin meets mind

The doctor says, “AI evolves into holistic advisory – analysing stress, sleep and gut health to curate complete wellbeing solutions. Multi-sensory mists and neuro-responsive formulas transform routines into micro-moments of calm, while actively reducing inflammation and breakouts.”

Pre-ageing and longevity: prevention elevated

She says, “‘Prejuvenation’ becomes universal as biotech-derived skincare – including upcycled peptides – strengthens collagen earlier to delay signs of ageing,” she says.

“Sustainability gains via lab-grown over farm-harvested actives, cutting waste without compromising efficacy. Acne care shifts from stripping to preserving the microbiome.”

The rise of full-body rituals

Skincare and wellness will be about a holistic approach.

Dr Danielle says, “Body care ‘faceifies’ even further with ingestibles, advanced actives and smart tools. Hair removal gains in precision and inclusivity. Men’s grooming evolves into full, normalised routines.”

Non-surgical body contouring soar

Skincare and wellness clients are increasingly ditching invasive aesthetic procedures where possible.

As lymphatic therapist trainer Micaela Rios-O’Leary says about people trying the praised T-Shape contouring procedure, it’s for “healthy individuals seeking non-invasive solutions for body contouring and skin tightening, particularly those dealing with cellulite or stubborn fat”.

When it comes to non-surgical body contouring procedures, in 2026, Dr Danielle says, “Hybrid devices will merge fat-melting and skin-tightening for even quicker, more seamless results – perfect for a post-surgery-averse generation seeking refined silhouettes on their lunch breaks.”

‘Sad Blush’ Is the Unexpected Makeup Trend Taking Over TikTok This Winter

‘Sad Blush’ Is the Unexpected Makeup Trend Taking Over TikTok This Winter

In the world of beauty, the final days of 2025 did not disappoint. Just before the new year, “sad blush” spread across social media like wild fire—and you’ll probably be seeing the makeup trend all over the next few months.

Truthfully, at this point, no one expected another makeup trend within the clean beauty movement, which is beginning to show signs of exhaustion after dominating the scene for a few years. But one of the most fun aspects of trends is precisely how unexpected they sometimes are.

It was probably the name that first caught your attention. Can a trend with such an unappealing name really succeed? The answer is simple: yes. Because “sad blush” is anything but sad; quite the opposite, in fact. And while it might not sound like a makeup trend you’re eager to jump on, give us until the end of this article to change your mind.

What is ‘Sad Blush’ all about?

In contrast to the pink, red, and berry tones that have dominated the last few months, neutral blush, or “sad blush,“ is emerging, against all odds, as one of the most flattering trends of the season. Among the multitude of colorful blushes flooding the market, beige might seem bland at first glance; however, it is precisely this understated elegance that is conquering social media. In fact, the trend celebrating the benefits of beige and nude blushes is being popularized on TikTok.

Glossier Cloud Paint Gel Cream Blush

BareMinerals Gen Nude Powder Blush

Against all odds, these neutral tones are incredibly flattering thanks to their illuminating effect. Because it is after applying foundation that the magic happens: the beige blends seamlessly with the skin, gliding over the contours of the face and creating a dimension that cannot be achieved with more saturated tones like pink or red.

We could define it as the perfect basic blush to look put together with minimal effort.

Even famed strawberry girl Hailey Bieber is getting into beige blush.

How to recreate the ‘Sad Blush’ trend

The secret lies, above all, in choosing the right color. Opt for a beige slightly darker than your skin tone: a touch of peach for warm skin tones, a rosy glow for cool skin tones, and a neutral shade for olive skin tones. Nothing too intense, just enough to add a subtle touch of warmth. You can even use a neutral eyeshadow from a palette you already own and lightly sweep it across your cheeks to create that natural flush. Because the best part is that the ” sad blush” look isn’t one of those beauty trends that requires watching a ton of tutorials to achieve.

How To Embrace The Toasty Makeup Trend This Winter

How To Embrace The Toasty Makeup Trend This Winter

Who says you have to stick to cool tones during the winter? The temperature might be dropping, but that doesn’t mean you have to look like an ice queen. This year, celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, and more are embracing the toasty makeup trend, which favors sunny brown tones in lieu of frosty blues.

“The toasty makeup trend is all about bringing soft, neutral warmth back into the skin — think bronzy-mauve tones that melt seamlessly into a very hydrated, fresh-looking complexion,” says New York City-based makeup artist Chelsea Gehr, who’s worked with the likes of Laufey and Noah Cyrus. “It’s the perfect way to brighten dull winter skin without leaning into a full summer bronze. The eyes get subtle sculpting with tones like ochre, sienna, and soft terracotta, while a touch of glow on the high points keeps everything dewy, dimensional, and cold-weather friendly.”

Below, find a guide to perfecting the toasty makeup trend this winter.

Dewy Skin Care

Theo Wargo/FilmMagic/Getty Images

According to Gehr, hydration plays a key role in priming the face for toasty makeup. “The skin should appear plump, radiant, and nourished,” she says. Before applying your makeup, make sure to thoroughly prep your skin with hydrating moisturizers and serums.

“No glowing healthy look ever blossoms without hydration,” adds NYC makeup artist Sage Makeup, who who has worked with celebs like Catherine Zeta Jones and Serena Williams. She recommends prepping the skin with Aeston West’s Marine Treatment Mist and using it a second time when you’re finished applying makeup to lock in the look.

A Luminous Base

The key to an all-over toasty glow starts with your makeup base. New York-based celebrity makeup artist Claudia Lake, who has worked with everyone from Oscar Isaac to Djo, recommends using an illuminating foundation with ingredients like oils or light-reflecting particles to provide an effortless shine to skin. If you prefer a more matte look, Sage Makeup recommends using a light, sheer foundation to start. You can also use concealer to hide any blemishes and add a brightening effect on the high points of your face.

Beachy Bronzer

Eric Thayer/Los Angeles Times/Getty Images

“The toasted makeup trend embraces a radiant, sun-kissed glow that evokes warm summer days with soft, bronzed hues and a touch of warmth,” Lake says. That makes bronzer the most important part of the entire look. Lake recommends blending the bronzer of your choice onto your cheeks and temples to create a natural warmth across your face, while Gehr recommends tracing a “3” shape on each side of your face and blending it out for a seamless contour.

Sun-Kissed Cheeks

While blush isn’t necessary to achieve the toasty makeup trend, you can always give your makeup added depth by adding a burst of warm color across your cheeks and nose, in a subtle baby pink for that beachy glow. Rhode’s Sun Soak, Toasted Teddy, or Tan Line work for this particular trend, or Sage Makeup recommends a combination of pink and peach placed on the apple of your cheek and blended into your contour for a perfect flush.

Gehr recommends adding a little blush over your eyelids as well to tie the tones together. “Using the same shade on the eyes and face helps ‘marry’ the entire complexion and create that sculpted, diffused warmth the trend is known for,” she says. “The key is blending — everything should look soft and natural, never harsh.”

Champagne Highlight

LEONARDO MUNOZ/AFP/Getty Images

Much like blush, highlighter isn’t required to achieve the toasty makeup trend, but it can instantly amplify the look — especially if you’re headed to a New Year Eve’s party. Opt for a champagne or bronze highlighter, which easily blends with the warm-all-over tones you’re already using.

Honeyed Eyes

Bronzer might be the focal point, it’s important you don’t forget your eyes. In addition to the blush you’ve swiped on your lids, Lake recommends leaning into earthy eyeshadows — think honeyed golds, cozy browns, and even deep greens — for a cohesive look.

Glossy Lips

Gilbert Carrasquillo/GC Images/Getty Images

Don’t go overboard with the finishing touches. Lake says all you need to complete the toasty makeup trend is a soft nude lip, which will provide an “effortlessly chic vibe.” If nude lipstick isn’t your thing, line your lips in a teddy brown and top with a clear (or brown-tinted) gloss.

Σε αυτό το make up trend θα υποκύψω στις γιορτές

Σε αυτό το make up trend θα υποκύψω στις γιορτές

Beauty Editor’s Tip:
