The viral skincare trend dermatologists are warning against: 6 reasons to avoid it

The viral skincare trend dermatologists are warning against: 6 reasons to avoid it

We seem to be going back to basics with everything these days, from improving sleep by mimicking our ancestors’ circadian rhythms to eating whole foods to reduce the risk of dementia.

This shift has paved the way for the viral “Caveman” skincare routine, a trend built on the premise that “less is always more” when it comes to keeping skin looking young and healthy.

The Caveman technique involves ditching skincare products entirely, including cleansers, in favour of washing your face with water alone. The most extreme version proposes avoiding water altogether! “The theory is that this allows the skin to ‘self-regulate’ naturally,” explains dermatologist Dr Cristina Eguren.

However, the doctor and other experts warn of a major flaw in this logic. “Water alone cannot effectively dissolve sebum or remove traces of sunscreen, makeup or pollution,” notes fellow dermatologist Dr Inés Escandell. “Adequate cleansing requires surfactants (active cleaning ingredients) capable of removing these substances without disrupting the skin’s barrier.”

Why you should avoid the viral ‘Caveman Skincare’ routine

© GettyThe Caveman technique involves ditching cosmetic products entirely in favour of cleansing with water alone

Taken at face value (pun intended), the idea of a ‘natural detox’ sounds appealing. However, skipping your daily cleanse can trigger a cascade of skin problems. The Caveman routine can:

  • Disrupt the skin’s microbiome: Our skin hosts an ecosystem of microorganisms that coexist in a delicate balance. “Without a proper cleansing routine, it’s easier for certain bacteria and mites to proliferate, disrupting that balance,” says Dr Eguren. Dr Escandell adds that failing to remove sweat, sebum, pollutants or dead cells creates a situation that “favours the appearance of opportunistic or pathogenic microorganisms.”
  • Encourage bacterial proliferation: As noted above, leaving sebum and dirt on the skin creates a breeding ground for bacteria. “This increases the risk of inflammatory disorders and infections,” states Dr Eguren. Dr Escandell points to clinical evidence: “Studies on acne patients show that cleansing once or twice a day reduces the load of bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes. Other studies demonstrate that a lack of cleansing encourages Staphylococcus aureus to flourish.”
  • Cause irritation: “The accumulation of impurities and excess sebum can [weaken] the barrier function,” explains Dr Eguren. “The skin becomes sensitised and more prone to dehydration, leading to irritation, redness and discomfort.”
  • Trigger infection and acne breakouts: An inflammatory environment is ideal for the blackheads and pustules to thrive. Dr Eguren adds: “By not properly removing impurities and cellular debris, especially excess sebum, pores become clogged. This can trigger or worsen breakouts of acne, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis.”
  • Accelerate ageing: “Avoiding cleansing hinders proper cell renewal and exposes the skin to more free radicals, which accelerates ageing,” asserts Dr Eguren. Our skin also needs antioxidants and sun protection to remain healthy. “Skipping SPF increases oxidative damage; UV radiation and pollution contribute to photoageing, collagen loss and wrinkles. Also, dehydrated skin simply looks older,” says Dr Escandell.
  • Cause Dermatosis Neglecta: This is a specific condition caused by the build-up of dead cells and dirt, resulting in dark, rough patches. “In the absence of proper cleansing, these brownish or greyish plaques appear, formed by a solidified accumulation of sweat and sebum,” Dr Escandell concludes.

The alternative: A dermatologist-approved routine for healthy skin

According to the experts, a proper facial cleansing routine should be simple, consistent and tailored to your specific skin type. It also should be done both morning and night, even if you haven’t worn makeup.

© Getty ImagesDermatologists recommend a gentle cleanse, morning and night

Here is the recommended protocol:

  1. In the morning: Start with a gentle cleanse using a product suited to your skin type. Next, apply an antioxidant serum (such as Vitamin C). Finally, finish with broad-spectrum sun protection (minimum SPF 30), which is essential year-round but critical during the summer months.
  2. At night: “I recommend a double cleanse, particularly if you have been wearing makeup,” advises Dr Eguren. “Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to break down surface grime, then follow with a water-based gel or foam cleanser to rinse the skin clean.” Once the skin is prepped, apply a product containing active ingredients, such as retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).
  3. Exfoliation: “It is very beneficial to include proper exfoliation to effectively remove traces of oil, cellular debris and Demodex mites; this will improve the skin’s condition and function,” explains Dr Eguren. Frequency will depend on your skin type. “For oily skin, this can be done frequently, even daily,” Dr Eguren concludes. “For dry skin, once or twice a week is sufficient.”

The dangers of viral misinformation in skincare

The fact that the Caveman routine has gone viral on TikTok means it has resonated with, and unfortunately misinformed, a massive, predominantly young audience.

“Social media can turn any practice into a trend, even without a scientific basis,” warns Dr Eguren. “Many young people adopt this routine without understanding the implications. It normalises habits that aren’t beneficial for skin health and can actually worsen conditions like acne or rosacea.”

Dr Escandell shares this concern, noting that the craze trivialises the importance of dermatological hygiene. It also “may encourage people with acne, dermatitis or rosacea to abandon effective treatments and disregard specialist advice.

“As with other fads, it creates unrealistic expectations; the ‘benefits’ shown online are usually anecdotal and cannot be applied to the general population.”

Blurred Lips Are The Cool-Girl Makeup Trend To Try This Winter

Blurred Lips Are The Cool-Girl Makeup Trend To Try This Winter

In recent weeks the look has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram, with makeup artists and creators trying to copy it. As makeup artist Tanielle Jai previously told Glamour, kissable lips are one of the biggest beauty trends to watch especially heading into 2026, with semi-matte balms popular among brands like Chanel Beauty, Violette_Fr, Saie and Louis Vuitton Beautè.

“I think we’ll be seeing less emphasis on defined lip liner and more of that ‘bitten lip’ look inspired by Korean and French beauty trends,” Tanielle says. “It’s a soft, blurred, just-kissed, lived-in matte style that feels effortless.”

Park has kept light-lipped about her method, but creator Ivan Lam recently shared a Park-inspired tutorial on how to get the blurred-lip look. “It always has the signature Nina Park touch,” Lam says in the video. “It looks like your natural self but better, which I really love right now.”

First, Lam starts by prepping the lips with the Prada Beauty Hydrating Lip Balm, letting it sit on skin to hydrate. Next, he takes a cool-tone lip liner from Make Up for Ever and overlines the cupids bow. To get that signature blurred look, he uses a smudging brush to diffuse the colour.

“What [Park] kind of does is smudge it out so it’s never a solid line,” Lam says. Then, he layers it with a rosy liner from Makeup by Mario to add back some definition and colour. Lastly, he tops things off with the Nooni Hydrating & Plumping Lip Oil in a rosy pink colour, to “give life back” into the lips, tapping the product on with his finger.

“The liners are really cool toned, which is why I think the makeup looks so good,” Lam says. “It’s a mixture of cool tone and warm tones.” In the comments, Park gave her seal of approval: “In love with this,” she wrote.

A Dermatologist Explains Why “Doing Less” Might Be The Most Effective Skincare Trend Today | Health and Fitness News

Last Updated:December 14, 2025, 15:43 IST

Is skin fasting just a viral trend or a dermatologist-approved reset? An expert explains how simplifying skincare can repair the skin barrier and restore balance.

A dermatologist-backed look at skin fasting and why simplifying your skincare routine may help restore the skin barrier and improve overall skin health.

Skin fasting refers to temporarily stopping most skincare products for a short period and allowing the skin to regulate and repair itself naturally. The idea is simple: stop overloading the skin, let it breathe, and allow its own repair mechanisms to take charge. But as the concept gains traction online, one question remains is skin fasting just another viral trend promising quick, flawless skin, or does it hold real dermatological value?

“Skin fasting is more relevant today than it has ever been,” says Dr Ridhima Arora, MBBS, MD (Dermatology & VD), Malik Radix Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. “The current beauty landscape is like a jungle of products, and consumers are often lost in it.” She explains that people are routinely layering retinol, vitamin C, exfoliating acids, niacinamide, peptides, and other ‘actives’ often without understanding compatibility or long-term consequences.

According to Dr Arora, this ‘more is better’ approach has led to a silent but widespread issue: skin barrier damage.

“The skin barrier functions like a fortress, it retains moisture and keeps irritants out,” she explains. “When it is repeatedly exposed to multiple active ingredients without adequate recovery time, the barrier becomes compromised.” The result, she notes, is a familiar list of concerns: dullness, breakouts, redness, hypersensitivity, and stinging even with the most basic products.

“These are not signs that skincare itself is harmful,” Dr Arora clarifies. “They are signs that the skin has become overwhelmed and vulnerable.”

How Skin Fasting Helps Repair the Barrier

Skin fasting, when done correctly, allows the skin to reset. “By simplifying the routine, you give the skin barrier the freedom to heal itself,” says Dr Arora. However, she cautions against extreme approaches.

“In my clinical practice, I’ve seen that patients respond best to a gradual, controlled method rather than abruptly stopping everything,” she says. Dr Arora recommends limiting skincare for two to three days to just three essentials: a mild cleanser, a simple moisturiser, and sunscreen.

“During this period, avoid serums, exfoliants, and active treatments,” she advises. “In many cases, the skin appears calmer, less inflamed, and more balanced within just a few days.”

Reintroducing Actives Slowly and Safely

Once the skin feels settled, Dr Arora suggests reintroducing actives with caution. “Bring back only one product at a time, and wait at least two weeks before adding another,” she says. This approach not only helps identify what truly works for your skin but also prevents unnecessary irritation and setbacks.

The Takeaway: Moderation Over Excess

“Skin fasting doesn’t mean throwing away all your skincare products,” Dr Ridhima Arora emphasises. “It’s about moderation understanding that sometimes restraint leads to healthier skin.”

In a world of complex routines and constant new launches, the message is refreshingly simple. As Dr Arora concludes, “As paradoxical as it sounds, sometimes less really is more. Your skin needs it.”

Less is more: Το νέο Mistletoe Makeup Trend

Less is more: Το νέο Mistletoe Makeup Trend

Η νέα τάση που έχει κατακλύσει τα social media υπόσχεται να δημιουργήσει το «just‑been‑kissed» αποτέλεσμα.

@jazcrushartistry

@aimeetwistartistry

Why Dopamine Beauty Is The Mood-Boosting Skincare Trend You’ll See Everywhere | Beauty News

Why Dopamine Beauty Is The Mood-Boosting Skincare Trend You’ll See Everywhere | Beauty News

Last Updated:December 09, 2025, 10:19 IST

Dopamine beauty adds a sense of playfulness to skincare routines, transforming daily tasks into enjoyable experiences.

Bright visuals and playful textures drive consumer engagement and repeat use. (Image: AI)

Skincare today is evolving into something far more joyful than a checklist of steps. The global rise of ‘dopamine beauty’ signals a deeper shift – one where colour, texture, scent, and sensorial pleasure are just as important as efficacy. Consumers want results, yes, but they also want skincare that sparks delight, feels comforting on the skin, and turns everyday routines into mini mood-boosting rituals. This emotional connection is what’s reshaping the beauty landscape.

Pravin Bera, Co-Founder, Dr. Rashel, sees this transformation unfold daily. “Dopamine beauty brings a sense of playfulness to routines, turning daily steps into moments that feel good. When products feel pleasant to use, people are more willing to stay committed to their skincare,” he says.

Manish B. Chowdhary, Co-Founder, Wow Skin Science, calls it a behaviour shift, not just a trend. “Sensoriality is now a genuine purchase driver – bright visuals, playful textures and mood-enhancing formats increase attention, recall and repeat use. Brands that treat emotion as seriously as efficacy are the ones that will keep winning,” he explains.

Vishal Anand, Exclusive Licensee Partner for Lush in India, notes that the philosophy has always been simple: “Beauty should spark instant happiness the moment you see, touch, or smell it.”

Together, their insights map the rise of beauty that delights the senses as deeply as it cares for the skin.

The Sensory Revolution In Cleansing And Hydration

The dopamine effect begins with the simplest step: cleansing. Bera notes how charcoal cleansers, aloe vera gels, and rice water formulas are no longer chosen just for performance but for the visual and tactile experience. The deep black of charcoal, the cool glide of aloe, and the feather-light foam of rice water create a moment of sensorial calm. “These textures make daily cleansing a pause-and-refresh ritual,” he says.

Serums and hydration products are also evolving aesthetically. Vivid vitamin C solutions, green tea gels, and bouncy hyaluronic acid formulas bring brightness and instant freshness to routines. Their lightweight feel is as energising as their active ingredients.

Textures That Lift The Mood

Masking and weekly treatments have become the heart of dopamine beauty. From inky charcoal masks to pastel clay packs and silky ceramide serums, the experience is as important as the outcome. Bera notes that these tactile shifts encourage consistency: “The satisfying feel of a mask or scrub encourages regular use and gives visible results.”

Anand highlights how fruit-infused scrubs, sea-salt polishes, syrupy rose gels and vibrant creams turn rituals into indulgent moments. “Each texture and shade is designed to engage the senses and reconnect you with yourself,” he says.

The Future Of Dopamine Beauty

Dopamine beauty extends far beyond the formula. Optimistic colours, uplifting fragrances and formats that feel playful in hand create instant emotional connection. Bright, nature-inspired hues and expressive scents also anchor an ethos of happiness-led beauty.

Dopamine beauty marks a turning point in the industry – an understanding that skincare is emotional care. It’s about turning mundane routines into meaningful, joyful moments through colour, texture, scent, and sensorial design. As brands continue to innovate, products that spark happiness will sit right alongside those that deliver results. And together, they’ll create beauty rituals that uplift both skin and spirit, one mood-brightening step at a time.

Scientists say this viral rosemary skincare trend actually works

Scientists say this viral rosemary skincare trend actually works

A popular online skincare trend centered on rosemary and rosemary extract now has scientific evidence behind it. Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania report in JCI Insight that a natural compound in rosemary leaves may help wounds heal more effectively and limit the formation of scars.

“Many skin injuries end in scars, and in some people, it can lead to long-term cosmetic and even functional issues,” said senior author Thomas Leung, MD, PhD, an associate professor of Dermatology at Penn. “Our findings suggest that rosemary extract, and specifically the antioxidant, carnosic acid, can shift the healing process from scarring to healthy skin regeneration. We don’t have proven ways to consistently do that in humans.”

A Viral Trend That Sparked a Scientific Question

Penn undergraduate student Jiayi Pang (left) and Penn PhD candidate Emmanuel Rapp Reyes (right) found that rosemary can help skin wounds heal without causing scars.

The idea for the project began on TikTok and Instagram. After noticing that many creators were promoting rosemary serums and rosemary-based products for better skin recovery, Pang and Rapp Reyes approached Leung to understand whether these claims had scientific merit. Their curiosity led them to begin a series of laboratory experiments.

“We hypothesized there was likely something real behind the hype because rosemary contains many antioxidants,” said Pang, co-lead author of the study. “But we knew in order to really uncover its potential, we needed to prove its healing properties and uncover how exactly it was facilitating healing.”

Testing Rosemary’s Key Compound in the Lab

Working with mice, the research team created a cream made with carnosic acid, a naturally occurring antioxidant found primarily in rosemary. The cream sped up wound closure and helped regenerate structures such as hair follicles, oil glands, and cartilage. The scientists also found that the compound activated a skin nerve sensor known as TRPA1, which had previously been linked to the ability to heal without scars. When the cream was used on mice that lacked TRPA1, the treatment no longer produced the same regenerative effects.

“We also identified other herbs, such as thyme and oregano, that may activate TRPA1. But rosemary stood out for its potency and safety,” said Rapp Reyes, co-lead author of the study. “Other natural ingredients, such as mustard oil, or the topical medication imiquimod are known to also stimulate the TRPA1 receptor, but unlike rosemary, those can cause irritation and inflammation.”

Why Rosemary Works Only Where It Is Applied

The researchers discovered that rosemary’s regenerative effect occurs only at the location where the carnosic acid cream is used. Applying the cream to areas of skin far from the injury did not lead to scar-free healing, emphasizing that its benefits are strictly local.

Potential for Future Wound Care Research

The Penn team advises people to speak with their healthcare providers before adding rosemary products to their skincare routine or creating homemade mixtures. Still, because rosemary is widely available and inexpensive, the researchers hope their findings encourage more exploration of its potential benefits in human wound care, especially for individuals prone to significant scarring.

“If rosemary is part of your skincare regimen and you think it’s working, it likely is,” said Leung. “I’m proud that the young scientists that led this research sought answers to questions in their everyday lives.”

Volcanic Mud Masks As Detox For Acne & Dull Skin: Trend Report Released

Volcanic Mud Masks As Detox For Acne & Dull Skin: Trend Report Released

Profiler Digital releases trend report on volcanic mud masks, backed by clinical evidence showing significant improvements in pore size, texture, and oiliness for acne-prone and dull skin.

— Profiler Digital has released a trend report on volcanic mud masks, backed by clinical evidence demonstrating their efficacy for acne-prone and dull skin. A recent clinical study found that a significant percentage of users experienced visible improvements in pore size, skin texture, and smoothness after a single application, while oiliness decreased by 94%. These findings substantiate the growing recognition of volcanic mud as a validated treatment for individuals seeking natural solutions to persistent skin concerns.

More details can be found at https://profilerdigital.com/products/volcanic-mud-facial-mask-deep-clean-brighten-skin

The effectiveness of volcanic mud stems from its unique mineral composition and physical properties. Rich in sulfur, magnesium, and silica, volcanic clay carries a high negative electrical charge that binds to toxins and impurities, drawing them out from deep within pores. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial characteristics make it particularly suitable for those struggling with breakouts. The mineral content supports skin rejuvenation and detoxification at the cellular level.

These properties translate into tangible benefits for individuals dealing with excess oil, congested pores, and lackluster complexion. Volcanic mud exfoliates dead skin cells, clears impurities, and penetrates pores to remove bacteria. The result is smoother and brighter skin. By drawing out excess oils and preventing pimples, it addresses the root causes of acne while simultaneously improving overall skin tone and texture.

Profiler Digital’s Volcanic Mud Facial Mask delivers these documented benefits through a mineral-rich formula designed for deep cleansing and brightening. When applied for 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times weekly, the product minimizes pores, controls oil production, and fights acne-causing bacteria. Priced at $21.45, the mask provides an accessible at-home alternative to professional treatments, making clinical-grade skincare available to a broader audience.

Customer feedback reinforces the clinical findings. Users report impressive results that exceeded expectations. Reviews consistently highlight the product’s quality and effectiveness, confirming that the mask delivers on its promise to detoxify and brighten skin. These testimonials reflect real-world validation of the science behind volcanic mud’s therapeutic properties.

The rising popularity of volcanic mud masks reflects a broader consumer shift toward natural, mineral-based skincare solutions. As individuals increasingly seek alternatives to chemical-heavy products, volcanic mud offers proven detoxification benefits supported by both clinical validation and a history of traditional use. This convergence of scientific evidence and consumer demand positions volcanic mud as a significant trend in the skincare industry.

While the Volcanic Mud Facial Mask is especially effective for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin types, its deep cleansing and brightening properties benefit anyone seeking a refreshed and revitalized complexion. This versatility expands the appeal of volcanic mud treatments beyond a single demographic, though the core benefits remain most relevant for those battling persistent breakouts and dullness.

The affordability and convenience of Profiler Digital’s product make professional-quality skincare accessible without the need for expensive salon visits or complex regimens. By offering a straightforward application process and visible results within weeks, the company has positioned volcanic mud masks as a practical solution for consumers seeking effective detoxification and acne management at scale.

Profiler Digital’s trend report demonstrates the company’s focus on educating consumers about evidence-based skincare innovations. The report, along with detailed product information, customer testimonials, and purchasing options, is available at https://profilerdigital.com/

‘Eye Wig’ Eyeshadow Hack: Would You Try The New Beauty Trend Making Waves On TikTok?

A new beauty trend on TikTok is causing quite a stir. It’s called the ‘eye wig’ — yes, a wig for your eyelids. This innovative eyeshadow hack promises beautifully defined eyes but makeup-free eyelids all day, without the struggles of applying eyeshadow.

The buzz began when beauty creator Nicole Fay shared her try-on video, which quickly went viral. The clip has racked up 6.9 million views, 420,000 likes and more than 3,000 comments, sparking debate across the platform about whether this unusual product is genius or gimmick.

The ‘Eye Wig’ Eyeshadow Hack

Fay followed the tutorial at the start of her video and showcased the product with visible excitement. ‘Okay, ’cause I need to try this. ‘Cause… what? I waited like a month for this to arrive. This is basically an eyeshadow wig, and it’s really good for girls who aren’t great at eyeshadow, like me. So I want to try this because if it’s legit, this is such a great little hack. Did you see how her eyes came out? It looks like eyeshadow! But let’s put this to the test, because I don’t know.’

She explained that there are three different styles to choose from and that she had ordered the Hazel Halo with half lashes. At first, the product looked a little odd, but after trimming the ‘wig’ to fit her eyelids, it began to work.

‘It’s looking a little scary right now, but I think they’re a good fit for my eyes. I’m going to finish the rest of my face and then come back. Okay, give me a second. Are you ready for the final reveal?’

Once her full glam was complete, the result was striking. Fay laughed at her own reflection:

‘Ah, it’s cute. I like it. Does it look like there’s something on my eyelid that shouldn’t be there? Be honest. I don’t know… I like it, haha,’ Fay said.

Nicole Fay visibly happy with the ‘eye wig’.

She rated the product, saying, ‘If I had to give it a score out of 10, I’d say 7, because I’m not sure I’d wear these every day. But what do you guys think? Would you try this?’

Comments on her video were mixed, from praise to scepticism:

  • ‘This is amazing for cancer patients and girls with alopecia 🙌🏻.’
  • ‘Giiirrrrrllll, this is genius 🤭🤭🤭.
  • ‘Omg, they look so good, I like this idea.’

Others were amused by the name, ‘Eyeshadow wig is sending me 😂😂😂😂.’ Some were sceptical, ‘Imagine seeing that on the floor and thinking someone’s eyelid blew off 😭,’ with one user adding, ‘That CANNOT be comfortable.’

Meet the Innovator: Mara Porter

This ‘eye wig’ is officially called ‘iLIDS™’, the world’s first eye wig, created by four-time Emmy-winning journalist, Webby Awards winner, host, and beauty innovator Mara Porter.

PHOTO: MARA PORTER / MARAPORTER.COM

Porter is known for her DIY beauty and makeup hacks, and the idea for the ‘eye wig’ stemmed from a video of her putting a band-aid on her eyelids. The clip sparked numerous comments urging her to patent the idea and launch a business — which she did, with remarkable success.

In an exclusive interview with MadameNoire, Porter revealed she had been conceptualising the idea for years: ‘I’ve had this idea in my head for 20 years, because I had to get ready for TV every day for 15 years — that’s a full beat every single day,’ she explained.

She recalled applying false lashes in a car during a hurricane before going live on air:
‘I was like, “Let me put these on,” because being in a hurricane without lashes on doesn’t work when you’re on TV.’

How the ‘Eye Wig’ Works

According to Mara Porter’s website, iLIDS™ are crafted from a medical-grade, skin-safe, latex-free material, making them hypoallergenic and suitable for all skin types. Initially, the adhesive may feel non-tacky, but becomes sticky as it warms with body heat.

iLIDS™ are reusable and washable, so you can gently peel them off, clean them, and store them on their original backing for future use.

Using iLIDS™ is simple: just align the ‘eye wig’ over your eyelid, press it gently into place, and it instantly creates the appearance of fuller, more defined lashes or lids — without the need for mascara, lash extensions, or other traditional makeup products.

Because they’re cosmetic-safe, they can even be used by people with lash extensions or complete lash loss, offering a quick, fuss-free way to enhance your eye look.

In the interview, Porter said that her innovation was ‘God-given’.

‘This is 100 per cent God-given, like, in me,’ she told MadameNoire about her passion for beauty. ‘God planted this seed in me because I’ve been like this as long as I can remember. Every obsession I had, the thing that drew me like a moth to a flame, was always beauty-related. I remember being so obsessed with the Jet Beauty of the Week.’

Whether you’re a makeup pro or a beginner, the ‘eye wig’ is proving that beauty doesn’t have to be complicated. With iLIDS™, you can achieve flawless, show-stopping eyes in seconds. Thousands are already experimenting with this viral TikTok sensation. Now, the question is: will you?

New guidance for parents over child skincare trend

New guidance for parents over child skincare trend

The UK Cosmetics Industry body (CTPA) has launched new guidance for parents over a growing skincare trend for children.

The “SkinCare Simplified – A Parent’s Guide” was published on Tuesday, and it recommends keeping skincare simple for young people.

Parents have been advised to focus on gentle cleansing, light-weight moisturising, and sun protection for children and tweens.

The voice of the UK cosmetics and personal care industry said it does not support young people using anti-ageing products or complex and unnecessary routines.

“The CTPA, as the voice of the UK cosmetics and personal care industry, clearly reiterates its position that anti-ageing products or complex routines should not be used on young people’s skin as they are not designed for this purpose,” the new advice stated.

The advice comes as skincare trends become increasingly popular among children and young people.

Last month Canadian actress, Shay Mitchell, launched a range of skincare products aimed at children aged just three and over.

Dermatologists have warned that the trend may cause psychological harm by introducing beauty standards too early, and as the trend grows, there are concerns that brands are taking advantage of this growing market.

“We need to let kids be kids, we need to let them do children’s activities and not call skincare a hobby,” dermatologist Amy Perkins said.

“Skincare is something that adults develop as they get older, but now the skincare industry are targeting parents and labelling it as ‘self-care’, and that’s unfortunately really damaging and ultimately damaging kids self-esteem in the longer term.”

The CTPA’s online survey of 2,000 UK parents of children aged 8-14 found that many parents are having discussions with their children about skincare.

It found that conversations with children about skincare are now a regular occurrence for 85% of parents, and nearly a third (32%) discuss it several times a week.

Over two in five parents (42%) also believed that their children know more about skincare than they do.

The Cosmetics Body said the new advice is intended to help young people develop healthy and age-appropriate skin hygiene habits and support parents in discussions with their children.
