protein balls

Chai Spice Protein Balls With Adaptogens

Chai tea is one of my favorites this time of year and I love incorporating chai spices into baked goods. The aroma of cinnamon, clove, and cardamom warming the kitchen feels like a cozy hug. These adaptogenic chai spice protein balls capture that same cozy flavor with the benefit of adaptogens.

They’re slightly sweet, warmly spiced, and have a soft, chewy texture that makes them feel indulgent, even though they’re packed with nutrients. Each protein ball is full of ingredients that help support energy, focus, and immune health. Especially helpful during the colder (often chaotic) months when our bodies could use an extra boost.

These are great to make ahead for snacks and they also freeze well for later. The protein balls provide healthy fats, protein, and adaptogens to help your body handle stress more effectively. Added collagen also supports gut health, healthier skin, and stronger hair and nails.

Warming Chai Spices

Cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and ginger aren’t just tasty, they offer powerful immune system support. Cinnamon helps balance blood sugar and adds natural sweetness without needing much added sugar. Clove is rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial to help support cellular health.

Cardamom is both soothing and invigorating, known for its ability to calm digestion while boosting circulation. And ginger brings its signature gentle heat and anti-inflammatory benefits, helping support immune and digestive health.

Together, these cozy chai spices add a delicious flavor and powerful health benefits! While I’ve included the spices separately in the recipe, you can also use 2 and ½ teaspoons of my homemade pumpkin pie spice blend. The flavor is similar, and it’s easy to use if you already have some mixed up.

Mighty Adaptogens

Adaptogens are plants and mushrooms that help the body be more resilient to stressors. Whether its physical, emotional, or environmental. Unlike potent medicines, they help bolster the body’s cellular health and defenses to restore balance.

There are several different true adaptogens, and some work better for different situations. I opted to use a functional mushroom blend here because it helps provide broader support than just choosing one thing.

Adaptogenic mushrooms help support focus, sleep, energy, and calm, depending on which combination you choose. I like the adaptogenic mushroom blends from Four Sigmatic, which often include varieties like reishi, lion’s mane, and cordyceps.

  • Reishi is sometimes referred to as the “queen of mushrooms” for its calming properties. It helps with restful sleep and supports the immune system.
  • Lion’s Mane supports mental clarity and focus. Perfect for that mid-afternoon slump.
  • Cordyceps helps boost stamina and energy naturally without caffeine.

Whatever blend you go with, be sure to choose a quality blend that isn’t overly earthy or bitter so the flavor balances well with chai spices.

More Healthy Ingredients (and Substitutions)

Collagen is one of my favorite additions to stir into drinks or even baked goods. It’s an easy way to add clean protein that supports gut health, joint health, and vibrant skin. Since collagen is flavorless, it blends seamlessly with the almond butter and spices.

Almond butter (or cashew butter) adds a nutty richness and healthy fats that help keep you full. They also make the protein balls perfectly soft and chewy. If you’re avoiding nuts, sunflower seed butter also works. I don’t recommend peanut butter here, since its strong flavor tends to overpower the delicate chai spices.

Hemp seeds add a pleasant crunch and an extra boost of omega-3s, plus a complete amino acid profile. They’re great for energy, muscle recovery, and healthy hair and skin. Honey helps bind the ingredients together and adds a touch of sweetness, plus enzymes and minerals. If you prefer, pure maple syrup works just as well.

How to Enjoy Them

These chai spice protein balls are wonderful as a quick snack for an afternoon energy boost, or even post-workout. They keep well in the fridge for about a week, and you can easily double the recipe to freeze for later.

It feels like you’re eating dessert, but they’re full of nourishing ingredients. Warming, grounding, and just a little sweet. These are a great go-to snack for supporting focus and calm while keeping your immune system strong through the changing seasons.

Chai Spice Protein Balls

These tasty, bite sized protein balls are naturally sweetened with honey and feature chai flavors. Plus, they contain functional mushrooms for better focus, sleep, and more.

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

  • Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of a stand mixer. Start with 1 teaspoon of coconut flour to thicken, and increase if needed. You can also use a hand mixer.

  • Mix thoroughly, taste, and adjust spices if desired.

  • Use a Tablespoon to scoop out the mixture and roll it into balls. Roll the balls into the hemp seeds.

  • Place the rolled balls onto the parchment paper and store in the fridge.

How to layer winter skincare? Expert tips and common mistakes

How to layer winter skincare? Expert tips and common mistakes

Learn how to layer winter skincare products effectively. Avoid common mistakes and receive expert tips to keep skin hydrated and healthy.

As the air gets colder, many of us prepare to keep our skin hydrated and healthy; however, winter can be particularly harsh on our skin. Lower temperatures and lower humidity can cause dryness, flakiness, and increased sensitivity. It often feels like a losing battle, mainly when you apply thick creams and oils, but still find your skin feeling dry and uncomfortable. What’s going on?

Many people focus on using heavy skincare products. Still, we often overlook an important aspect: how to layer those products correctly. “Learning to layer your winter skincare can significantly help with dryness and can give you a healthy glow”, Dr Anindita Sarkar, Aesthetic Physician and Medical Cosmetologist, tells Health Shots. The correct way to layer your products and why many people get it wrong, based on expert advice from skincare professionals.

What is the primary purpose of layering?

Before we get into how to layer products, let’s talk about why it’s important. Each skincare product has a unique formula, which means it works at various levels and serves specific purposes. “If you don’t apply them in the correct order, you can block absorption and reduce their effectiveness”, says the doctor. Instead of achieving the smooth, hydrated skin you want, you might end up with a greasy feel that actually harms your skin.

What is the correct order of layering winter skincare products?

Let’s discuss the fundamental steps for winter skincare layering. “It’s important to use your products in the correct order”, says Dr Sarkar. This helps each product work well together, rather than against each other.

Apart from soothing your skin, cucumber juice can also help remove makeup. Image courtesy: Adobe Stock

  1. Cleanser: Start your routine with a gentle cleanser that hydrates your skin. “This cleanser should remove dirt and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils”, shares the skin expert. Select a product that cleanses and nourishes your skin simultaneously.
  2. Toner or mist: Next, use an alcohol-free toner or hydrating mist. This step is often overlooked, but it is crucial for maintaining your skin’s pH balance. A good toner prepares your skin for the products you will use next and helps them work more effectively.
  3. Serum: Begin your skincare routine with a lightweight serum rich in ingredients that benefit your skin. “Look for hyaluronic acid, which helps pull moisture into your skin, or niacinamide, which supports your skin’s barrier”, shares the expert. This step enables essential hydration to penetrate deeply into your skin.
  4. Moisturiser: After applying the serum, it’s essential to follow with a moisturising cream. “Choose creams that contain ingredients like ceramides, squalane, or shea butter”, says the aesthetic physician. These ingredients help strengthen your skin’s barrier and retain moisture.
  5. Facial oil (optional): If you have dehydrated skin, consider adding a few drops of non-comedogenic facial oils, such as safflower or rosehip oil. Using oil at this stage can add protection, improve glow, and make your skin feel as good as it looks.
  6. Sunscreen: Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, even in winter! “Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher because UVA rays are always present, no matter the season”, says the medical cosmetologist. Many people think they can skip sunscreen when it’s cold, but UV exposure can cause long-term skin damage.

What are some common skincare mistakes?

Now that we’ve discussed the correct order for layering skincare products, let’s look at some common mistakes that can disrupt your winter skincare routine.

  1. Skipping sunscreen: Many people believe they are safe from UV rays in winter, but this is a big mistake. UV rays can still cause skin ageing and dark spots.
  2. Over-exfoliating: Exfoliating too frequently with acids or scrubs can cause damage to your skin. “It may remove essential oils from your skin barrier, causing further dryness and irritation”, says the cosmetologist. During winter, it’s best to limit exfoliation or opt for gentler methods.
  3. Applying active ingredients to dry skin: Did you know that some ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, work better on slightly damp skin? If you use them to dry skin, they might not work as well, and you could be disappointed with the results.
  4. Layering products too quickly: Give your skin time to absorb each product before applying the next one. If you rush, it can cause your products to clump or irritate your skin, which reduces the benefits of the products you chose.

What is a holistic approach in skincare?

Winter skincare is about finding balance and using products in the correct order, not just piling on more products. By layering your skincare correctly, you help hydration absorb deeply while keeping your skin moist. When you layer your winter skincare products correctly, they can help fight dryness instead of causing frustration. Your skin doesn’t need more products; it needs better balance.

From reviving heritage practices to creating digital-first health ecosystems, they are reshaping the industry and placing India firmly on the global wellness map.

Nei Native by Nitya Ganapathy

At Nei Native, the A2 Desi Bilona Ghee is more than a superfood, it is the heart of the brand. Made using the traditional Bilona method, it carries the nutty aroma, rich texture, and purity reminiscent of home. What began with ghee has now grown into a thoughtful range of superfoods, condiments, and skincare, where ghee becomes the hero ingredient nourishing the skin the same way it nourishes the body, and making everyday wellness more natural, holistic, and rooted in tradition.

After 23 years in Mumbai’s media industry, Nitya Ganapathy took a leap of faith in 2021, inspired by her ancestral recipe and the fading art of Bilona ghee-making. What started as a homegrown idea now produces more than 2,500 jars a month, celebrating heritage, craft, and conscious living. Nei Native is Nitya’s tribute to culture and care, bringing the warmth of home and the wisdom of tradition to modern lifestyles.

Cosmix by Vibha Harish

Vibha Harish, co-founder of the Bengaluru-based wellness brand Cosmix, launched her venture in 2019 after recognizing the quick-fix culture dominating the wellness space. Inspired by her mother’s homeopathy background and her own research in plant-based nutrition, she and her husband Soorya Jagadish built Cosmix to offer clean, transparent, root-cause-focused supplements made from superfoods and adaptogens.

Cosmix promotes holistic health with blends supporting digestion, immunity, hormones, sleep, and skin, while consciously rejecting marketing that fuels insecurity. From an online startup, the brand has grown into a key player in India’s wellness market, earning Vibha a spot on the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 list and attracting investment offers on Shark Tank India.

Kapiva by Ameve Sharma & Shrey Badhani

Kapiva was founded in 2016 by Ameve Sharma and Shrey Badhani with the goal of modernizing Ayurveda and making it relevant to contemporary lifestyles. As part of the third generation of the renowned Baidyanath Ayurvedic family, Ameve sought to bridge ancient wisdom with modern wellness needs. Partnering with Shrey, a former Bain & Company consultant, he created a brand offering authentic, science-backed Ayurvedic nutrition in convenient formats.

The founders initially experimented with Ayurvedic clinics but soon saw greater potential in functional foods and beverages such as herbal juices, cold-pressed oils, pure honey, and A2 ghee made from responsibly sourced ingredients. Kapiva’s philosophy, “Everyday Ayurveda,” encourages people to balance their health naturally without complex routines. Combining traditional formulations with modern production standards, the brand ensures purity and efficacy for instance, processing aloe vera within hours of harvest to retain nutrients.

With its direct-to-consumer and omnichannel strategy, Kapiva has become one of India’s leading modern Ayurveda brands, earning both consumer trust and strong investor support.

Be Bodywise by Revant Bhate & Dhyanesh Shah

Mosaic Wellness, founded in early 2020 by Revant Bhate and Dhyanesh Shah, began with the vision of delivering consumer-first, digital-first wellness solutions for modern India. The company focuses on often-overlooked aspects of personal health, including hormonal balance, skin and hair wellness, and intimate care.

Be Bodywise, one of its flagship ventures launched in May 2021 is dedicated exclusively to women’s wellness. The brand integrates tele-consultations, educational content, community support, and clinically tested products to address concerns such as PCOS, hair loss, acne, and menstrual health. Be Bodywise was created to move beyond superficial fixes, offering root-cause-driven, holistic solutions.

By combining digital health guidance with science-backed formulations, the founders have built a platform that empowers women to take charge of their wellbeing in an informed, inclusive, and sustainable way.

Traya by Saloni Anand

Saloni Anand, co-founder of Traya Health, launched the brand in 2019 with her husband, Altaf Saiyed, after personally experiencing hair loss and realizing how limited existing cosmetic solutions were. Their journey led them to uncover deeper root-cause factors behind hair fall—including lifestyle, hormonal, and nutritional imbalances.

With Saloni’s background in engineering and business and Altaf’s startup experience, the duo created Traya as a platform that blends Ayurveda, dermatology, and nutrition to offer holistic, science-backed hair treatments. After extensive research and trials, Traya officially launched in 2020 with the mission to change how people approach hair health in India.

Traya treats hair fall as a health condition rather than a surface-level issue. Its personalized, digital-first model begins with an online hair and health diagnostic test to identify underlying causes. Treatment plans include customized kits combining Ayurvedic herbs, dermatological formulations, and nutritional supplements tailored to the individual.

Since inception, Traya has served over a million customers, built a loyal community, and attracted strong investor interest including a ₹75 crore funding round from Xponentia Capital in 2024. With its root-cause-driven philosophy, Traya continues to redefine India’s hair and wellness industry.

Lucky Beauty Rituals For Every Sign

Lucky Beauty Rituals For Every Sign

I’ve always believed beauty is more than skin deep, but who doesn’t love a little glow-up? Over the years, I’ve realised that aligning my self-care rituals with my zodiac sign not only makes beauty fun but also feels strangely lucky. If you’re into horoscopes or just love an excuse to pamper yourself, here’s my take on the beauty rituals each zodiac sign should follow for that extra sparkle.

Aries (21 March – 19 April)

If you’re always running around, quick and fiery rituals work best. Aries, your lucky beauty trick is the energising face mist. Keep a citrusy spray in your bag, a few spritzes, and you’re recharged. It’s like your personality: bold, fresh, and unstoppable.

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Comfort is your love language, Taurus, and beauty should feel indulgent. Your lucky ritual is a weekly rose-scented bath soak. Add some petals, a dash of essential oil, and let yourself luxuriate like the true Venus child you are. Honestly, it’s the closest thing to feeling like royalty.

Gemini (21 May – 20 June)

Variety is the ritual. Colourful nail art is for you, switch it up every week – pastel French tips one day, pretty sparkles the next. It keeps the twin energy in you entertained and adds a playful touch to your aura.

Cancer (21 June – 22 July)

Cancers are water babies, and your glow-up secret is hydration. Start a nightly sheet mask ritual. Light a candle, put on your favourite playlist, and let that soothing serum hug your skin. It’s like a cuddle that restores both your glow and your mood.

Leo (23 July – 22 August)

Leo energy is all about drama, glam, and a bit of “look at me”. Your lucky ritual is hair care that screams shine. It can be an at-home hot oil champi with coconut oil or a glossy hair serum, your mane is your crown – make sure it dazzles.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

Virgos are meticulous, and that perfectionist streak extends to beauty. Your ritual is all about skincare routines. A clean, minimal 5-step ritual – cleanse, tone, serum, moisturise, sunscreen – is your lucky ticket. Nothing too wild, just a calm, consistent glow.

Libra (23 September – 22 October)

Ruled by Venus, you already have an eye for balance and beauty. Libras thrive with a lip ritual. Exfoliate, hydrate, and swipe on that perfect nude or bold red lipstick depending on your mood. Honestly, nothing balances an outfit like a well-chosen lip.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November)

As a Scorpio, you live for mystery, and your lucky beauty move is Kohl-rimmed eyes. Whether smudged kajal for that smoky look or a sharp wing that cuts through nonsense, eyes are your power weapon. One glance and the room is yours.

Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December)

Free-spirited Sagis, your ritual needs to travel with you. Try tinted lip balms with SPF. Toss it in your backpack, and you’re good for adventures without compromising on charm.

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

Caps love structure, and your ritual should be timeless. Invest in a weekly face massage with a gua sha or facial tools. Not only does it improve circulation, but it also doubles as a moment of calm after a long workday. Practical, effective, and classy, just like you.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

Aquarians are cool, offbeat trendsetters. Your lucky beauty move is to play around with metallic eyeshadow or a dash of holographic highlighter. It’s not just makeup, it’s a vibe.

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

Pisces are dreamy, and your ritual is aromatherapy skincare. Lavender-infused creams, sandalwood oils, or even jasmine sprays add to your ethereal aura. They also calm your sensitive side while keeping you radiant.

At the end of the day, beauty isn’t about trends or perfection – it’s about rituals that make you feel lucky, radiant, and confident. Align with your stars, and let your beauty routine bring you luck.

If you adopted these 10 habits from Korean beauty culture, your skin would thank you

If you adopted these 10 habits from Korean beauty culture, your skin would thank you

Korean beauty culture has been having a moment for years now, and honestly, I get why.

While living in Seoul for a few months back in 2019, I noticed something interesting: people of all ages seemed to have this luminous, healthy-looking skin that didn’t come from heavy makeup or fancy filters.

The secret? It wasn’t one magic product or procedure. It was a completely different approach to skincare built on consistency, prevention, and actually listening to what your skin needs.

Today, I want to walk you through ten habits from Korean beauty culture that genuinely make a difference. These aren’t complicated rituals requiring expensive imports or hours of your time. They’re practical approaches to skin health that happen to align with what dermatologists have been saying all along.

Let’s get into it.

1. Double cleansing becomes non-negotiable

Here’s the thing about cleansing: most of us aren’t doing it thoroughly enough.

Korean beauty culture popularized the double cleanse method, and after adopting it myself, I can’t imagine going back. The concept is simple but effective: first, you use an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup, sunscreen, and sebum. Then you follow with a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities and sweat.

Think about it this way. Your face accumulates layers throughout the day: sunscreen, pollution, natural oils, maybe some makeup. One quick wash with face soap isn’t going to cut through all of that.

When I started double cleansing about three years ago, I noticed my skin looked clearer within weeks. My serums and moisturizers seemed to work better too, probably because they could actually penetrate clean skin instead of sitting on top of residue.

You don’t need expensive products for this. A basic cleansing oil or micellar water followed by your regular gentle cleanser does the job perfectly.

2. Sunscreen isn’t optional, it’s the foundation

In Korean beauty culture, sunscreen is treated like brushing your teeth. It’s not a beach day thing or a summer thing. It’s an every single day thing.

This habit alone might be the most impactful one you can adopt. UV damage is responsible for up to 80% of visible aging, not to mention the skin cancer risks. Yet so many people skip sunscreen daily because it feels like extra work or they don’t like the texture.

Korean sunscreen formulations changed my entire relationship with SPF. They’re lightweight, don’t leave a white cast, and some even work as primers under makeup. I keep one in my bathroom, one in my bag, and one at my desk.

The rule is simple: if you’re awake, you’re wearing sunscreen. Cloudy day? Sunscreen. Working from home? Sunscreen. Winter? Still sunscreen.

Your 50-year-old self will thank you for this habit more than any other skincare choice you make.

3. Hydration happens in layers

Forget the idea that moisturizer alone equals hydrated skin.

Korean skincare introduced me to the concept of layering hydration, and it completely transformed how my skin looks and feels. The approach involves applying multiple lightweight layers of hydrating products rather than one heavy cream.

A typical routine might include a hydrating toner, an essence, a serum, and then a moisturizer. Each layer adds hydration and helps the next product absorb better.

I know what you’re thinking: that sounds like a lot of steps and a lot of time. But here’s the reality. Each product takes maybe 30 seconds to apply. The entire layering process adds maybe three minutes to your routine, and the difference in how plump and healthy your skin looks is worth every second.

Start simple if you want. Just add a hydrating toner after cleansing and before your moisturizer. You’ll notice the difference.

4. Prevention matters more than correction

Western skincare culture often focuses on fixing problems after they appear. Korean beauty culture flips this entirely.

The philosophy centers on preventing issues before they start: maintaining your skin barrier, protecting against environmental damage, keeping inflammation low, staying consistently hydrated.

This shift in mindset changed how I approach my entire routine. Instead of buying products to fight breakouts or fade dark spots after they happen, I focus on keeping my skin healthy so those issues are less likely to occur.

Prevention is also way more cost-effective. Quality sunscreen and a gentle routine cost less than treatments for sun damage. Keeping your skin barrier healthy prevents the sensitivity and irritation that lead to expensive dermatologist visits.

Think of it like this: you wouldn’t wait until your teeth are rotting to start brushing them. Why wait until your skin is damaged to start taking care of it?

5. Sheet masks become regular maintenance, not special occasions

Sheet masks used to feel like this indulgent spa thing I’d do maybe once every few months.

In Korean culture, they’re more like a regular tune-up. People use them a few times a week as a normal part of their routine, not as a treat.

The benefit isn’t just the concentrated serum soaking into your skin, though that helps. It’s also the forced 15-20 minutes of sitting still with a mask on your face. You’re not touching your skin, not checking your phone constantly, just letting your skin absorb the treatment.

I started keeping a variety of sheet masks on hand and using them while I read or watch something in the evening. My skin always looks more plump and refreshed the next morning, especially if I’ve been stressed or not sleeping well.

They’re also perfect for travel when your skin gets dehydrated from planes and hotels. I always pack a few in my suitcase now.

6. Exfoliation gets gentler and more strategic

For years, I thought good exfoliation meant scrubbing my face with something gritty until it felt “squeaky clean.”

Korean skincare taught me that aggressive exfoliation actually damages your skin barrier and causes more problems than it solves. The approach there favors gentle chemical exfoliants or soft physical exfoliation, used sparingly and strategically.

I’ve mentioned this before, but one of the biggest improvements in my skin came from switching from harsh scrubs to a gentle AHA toner I use maybe twice a week. My skin is smoother, brighter, and way less irritated.

The key is understanding that exfoliation isn’t about scraping off layers of skin. It’s about gently encouraging cell turnover and removing dead skin cells that make your complexion look dull.

If your skin feels tight or looks red after exfoliating, you’re doing it too hard or too often. Dial it back.

7. Ingredients matter more than marketing

Korean beauty consumers are incredibly educated about ingredients. They read labels, understand what different actives do, and make informed choices based on what their skin actually needs rather than what packaging promises.

This habit transformed me from someone who bought whatever had the prettiest bottle to someone who actually understands what I’m putting on my face.

You don’t need to become a cosmetic chemist, but learning the basics helps. Understanding the difference between humectants and occlusives, knowing which acids do what, recognizing irritating ingredients you should avoid.

When you know what you’re looking for, you stop wasting money on products that don’t work for your skin type or concern. You also stop falling for marketing gimmicks and focus on formulations that actually deliver results.

Start by researching the ingredients in products you’re currently using. You might be surprised by what you find.

8. Consistency trumps intensity every time

Korean skincare culture values gentle, consistent care over aggressive treatments.

Instead of harsh peels or intense actives that strip your skin, the focus is on sustainable routines you can maintain long-term without damaging your skin barrier.

This was a hard lesson for me. I used to think results required intensity. The more my skin burned or tingled, the better the product must be working, right? Wrong.

That approach left my skin irritated, sensitive, and actually worse than when I started. When I switched to gentler products used consistently, my skin improved steadily and stayed healthy.

Think marathon, not sprint. Your skin responds better to steady, gentle care than dramatic interventions followed by neglect.

Find a routine that works for your skin and your lifestyle, then stick with it for at least a few months before deciding if it’s working. Consistency is where real results happen.

9. Your skin changes, and your routine should too

One thing I noticed in Seoul was how people adjusted their skincare based on seasons, stress levels, hormones, and other factors affecting their skin.

Your skin isn’t static. What works perfectly in humid summer might leave you dry and flaky in winter. What your skin needed at 25 is different from what it needs at 35 or 45.

Korean beauty culture embraces this flexibility. People might have a core routine but swap in different products based on what their skin needs right now.

I keep different moisturizers for different seasons and pay attention to when my skin needs extra hydration versus when it needs something lighter. When I’m stressed or not sleeping well, I might add in more soothing ingredients.

Listen to your skin instead of rigidly following the same routine regardless of what’s happening. Your skin will tell you what it needs if you pay attention.

10. The ritual matters as much as the results

Maybe the most underrated aspect of Korean skincare culture is treating your routine as self-care rather than a chore.

The process of cleansing, applying each product mindfully, gently patting things into your skin becomes this meditative ritual that benefits your mental health as much as your complexion.

I used to rush through skincare, seeing it as something I had to do before bed. Now it’s one of my favorite parts of the day. Those ten minutes in the evening when I’m taking care of my skin are calming and grounding.

This mindset shift makes consistency easier too. When your routine feels good, you’re more likely to stick with it. When it feels like a hassle, you skip it.

Your relationship with your skin changes when you start treating skincare as an act of self-respect rather than vanity or obligation.

Final thoughts

Adopting these habits doesn’t mean completely overhauling your routine overnight or spending hundreds on new products.

Start with one or two changes that feel manageable. Maybe commit to daily sunscreen and double cleansing for a month and see how your skin responds. Add other habits gradually as they make sense for your life and skin.

The beauty of Korean skincare philosophy is that it’s less about perfection and more about building sustainable habits that support healthy skin long-term.

Your skin is with you for life. Treating it with consistent care, protection, and respect will pay dividends not just in how you look, but in how you feel about taking care of yourself.

Which of these habits are you most excited to try?

Affordable swaps for viral wellness trends

Affordable swaps for viral wellness trends

  • A Beverly Hills physician shares five affordable alternatives to viral wellness trends — from lemon water detoxes to DIY skincare.

  • Dr. Kevin Hayavi explains that effective self-care doesn’t require expensive products or high-tech gadgets.

  • His biggest advice: focus on simple, consistent habits that fit your lifestyle and budget.

From detox drinks to sleep gadgets, wellness trends seem to get pricier with every scroll. But according to Dr. Kevin Hayavi, Medical Director and Managing Partner at Beverly Hills Physicians, effective self-care doesn’t have to come with a luxury price tag.

In fact, many of the viral beauty and wellness habits flooding social media have affordable — and sometimes even better — alternatives hiding in your kitchen or daily routine.

Dr. Hayavi shared his top tips for making popular wellness trends work on a budget, from using lemon water as a natural detox to optimizing sleep without the latest tech. His message is simple: “Social media has made self-care feel expensive, but the truth is, the most effective solutions are often the simplest.”

Trends You Can Try on a Budget

While the trends online can seem endless, and cause a dent in your bank account, Dr. Hayavi is offering budget-friendly options for five of the most current viral trends:

  1. Lemon Water Over Pricey Detox Drinks. Forget $10 “detox” bottles — a squeeze of lemon does the same job. Mix half a lemon into warm water each morning for a refreshing start that boosts hydration, aids digestion, and adds a burst of vitamin C.

  2. Boost Fiber Naturally — No Supplements Needed. The “fibremaxxing” trend is all over TikTok, but you don’t need powders or pills to get results. Beans, oats, chia seeds, and whole grains can do the trick for far less money.

  3. DIY Gut-Health Drinks With Pantry Staples. Sea moss gels and gut tonics can cost $30 or more, but chia seeds offer the same digestive support for a fraction of the price. Stir a tablespoon into water or yogurt and let it soak for about 10 minutes.

  4. Kitchen-Beauty Masks Instead of Fancy Skincare. Before you splurge on viral “banana peel Botox,” try homemade face masks using ingredients you already own. Honey hydrates, oatmeal soothes, and yogurt gently exfoliates — all for pennies compared to store-bought products.

  5. Sleep Better Without Expensive Gadgets. “Sleepmaxxing” doesn’t have to mean buying pricey trackers or devices. Instead, dim your lights, cool your room, and stick to a regular bedtime. The payoff? Better rest, clearer skin, and improved focus — all free.

“A lot of wellness trends are actually rooted in very simple practices that have been around for a long time,” Dr. Hayavi said. “If the low-cost version feels good and makes a difference, you can decide later whether it’s worth investing in something more advanced. Wellness should never be about how much you spend.”

Know when to follow a trend

With so much information available at our fingertips, how do you know which trends to follow and which ones to ignore? Dr. Hayavi says that being discerning is of the utmost importance.

“Start by looking for consistency,” he recommends. “If a trend is based on long-standing research or traditional practices that have been used for generations, it is more likely to be legitimate. On the other hand, if something seems to appear overnight and is being pushed heavily by influencers or advertisers, that is usually a sign it may be more hype than substance.

“I also recommend checking whether the claims are supported by reputable sources, such as peer-reviewed studies or guidance from licensed medical professionals. If the only evidence you can find is anecdotal videos on TikTok, approach it with caution. Wellness should make sense for your lifestyle and budget, so always ask yourself whether a trend is sustainable before trying it.”

Consistency is key

If all else fails, Dr. Hayavi recommends going back to basics and being consistent with the wellness routines you incorporate.

“I think it’s important to remember that wellness is personal, so it doesn’t have to look like what you see online,” he said. “The most impactful habits are usually the most basic ones: staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and moving your body regularly. These don’t go viral because they’re not flashy, but they are the foundation of long-term health.

“Trends can be fun to explore, but they should always support your wellbeing rather than creating pressure or stress. Start with what feels manageable and build from there.”
