DIY Christmas Gifts

140+ Homemade & DIY Christmas Gifts

I love Christmas morning… homemade cinnamon rolls, family, and giving thoughtful gifts. It’s so easy to let the commercialism of the Christmas season take over. Over the years though, I’ve found that the simple things are often the most meaningful. Store-bought gifts certainly have their place, but homemade gift ideas are usually budget-friendly and a great way to give a customized gift.

Our family focuses more on giving experiences than material gifts, but I still find DIY gifts a good option. There are so many great gift options for DIY homemade gifts. Below you’ll find lots of handmade gift ideas and suggestions for some simple gift baskets. Whether it’s under the Christmas tree or as a stocking stuffer, handmade Christmas gifts are an easy way to love on your friends and family.

Why Make DIY Christmas Gifts?

Modern society is flooded with stuff everywhere. We’ve been told that piles of toys, jewelry, and other goodies from Santa make the holidays. Thoughtful gifts, like easy DIY projects, not only save money but are a simple way to make Christmas more special.

And if you don’t have time for homemade gifts, it’s nothing to beat yourself up over. Spending quality time with loved ones is the important thing. Don’t forget the gift wrapping! You can decorate plain paper gift bags. Have the kids help with some markers and stickers (if it’s for a grandparent). And if you’re really feeling crafty, make your own reusable fabric gift bags to use year after year.

DIY Christmas Decorations

While you’re making some homemade gifts, why not make your own Christmas decorations too? This DIY garland is made from natural materials like pine, cranberries, and dried oranges. Or try this tutorial for a burlap garland with ribbon and twine. I’ve also made some of these burlap wreaths to decorate our front door. For a table decoration, how about these naturally scented cinnamon pine cones?

And we can’t forget the Christmas cards! When my kids were little they’d wear matching outfits for our Christmas photo for annual Christmas cards. If you’re a crafter then some homemade Christmas cards or gift tags are also a nice touch.

Healthy Peppermint Mocha Recipe

Every time Christmas rolls around, I start to have visions of a peppermint mocha. I unapologetically enjoy all things coffee, but fancy coffee drinks can be a real budget breaker (not to mention full of sugar). Thankfully, there’s an easy and delicious peppermint mocha recipe you can make at home with wholesome real food ingredients.

You won’t even miss the $7 Starbucks peppermint mocha!

A Healthy Peppermint Mocha Recipe

In college, I frequented coffee shops for my caffeine fix. Now that I’m older, and hopefully a little wiser, I usually make my coffee at home with organic beans.

I don’t miss mainstream coffee shops at all since I can even make fancy coffees like pumpkin spice or vanilla lattes at home. They taste just as good as the conventional version, or better in my book. I love that I can use real food ingredients that give my brain and body a boost.

I often get asked, “how do you get it all done with a blog and so many kids?” The answer is I don’t do it all myself, but also having a structured schedule and eating enough healthy fats. This recipe is packed with brain-boosting fats and it keeps me energetic, but not jittery, all day.

Peppermint Mocha Ingredients

Baristas at the popular coffee shop chain use espresso, peppermint syrup, and milk to make their famous peppermint mocha coffee. I feel like this homemade version is even better. It won’t taste exactly the same as Starbucks or other coffee shops, but I like it more.

You could add some dairy-free almond milk, oat milk, or grass-fed cow milk to the recipe if you prefer. However, I’ve found that with the healthy fats it’s ultra creamy and doesn’t even need the added milk!

Want something even faster to have on hand when a peppermint mocha craving hits? Try my peppermint mocha creamer recipe to add to your morning coffee.

How to Make a Homemade Peppermint Mocha

I almost always include a tablespoon of butter, coconut oil, and/or MCT oil in my coffee. It’s the perfect way to get healthy fats and extra benefits.

I often use mushroom coffee from Four Sigmatic for the extra superfood benefits as well. I promise it doesn’t taste like mushrooms, just great coffee! They also have a delicious reishi mushroom hot chocolate that would also make a yummy addition to this recipe.

I’ve made variations of this recipe with coffee, decaf coffee, chai tea, and herbal teas. They’re all delicious! All you need is some brewed coffee, a few ingredients, and a blender to make your own peppermint mocha in just a few minutes.

A word of warning: If you aren’t used to consuming coconut oil, start slowly. Coconut oil and MCT oil can cause short-term nausea if you aren’t used to them. They both have immune boosting, metabolism boosting, and yeast-fighting properties. But if you jump in too fast your stomach might rebel!

Peppermint Mocha Recipe

Make your own peppermint mocha with brain-boosting healthy fats, antioxidant-rich cocoa powder, and a little minty kick.

 • Brew the coffee.

 • While it’s still hot, pour the coffee into a blender or large cup if using an immersion blender.

 • Add the remaining ingredients and blend on high for 10 seconds until emulsified. If using peppermint stevia then omit the honey and peppermint extract/oil. This step is important as it creates froth and a creamy flavor instead of an oily one. No frother necessary!

 • Drink and enjoy!

Topping it Off

I don’t always add toppings to my drinks, but some people love the extra decoration. If you want to make your holiday season drink a little fancier, then add some garnish. I like some of these crushed natural candy canes on top when I need something fancy for guests. Some healthy white chocolate or dark chocolate curls also go great on top.

Add a little dollop of grass-fed whipped cream or whipped coconut cream if desired. Some homemade marshmallows are also a great topping option!

Essential Oil Safety

This recipe calls for natural peppermint extract or 1 drop of peppermint essential oil. Since peppermint extract is made with essential oil diluted in alcohol, either way, you’ll be consuming the plant oil. Some people prefer one form over the other though.

There is some concern that peppermint oil in medicinal or supplemental amounts can reduce breast milk production. And pregnant women (especially first trimester) are recommended against ingesting essential oils. The amount included in this recipe (especially if using peppermint extract) is minimal, in culinary amounts, and generally considered safe for most people.

A Whole Latte Love

5 Easy Ways To Make Soap Curls + Roses

5 Easy Ways To Make Soap Curls + Roses

I’ll be honest, I love making melt and pour soap, but sometimes the process can feel a little repetitive. Melt, pour, wait, unmold, repeat. So I started looking for ways to add a little something extra to my bars without making the process feel fussy. And that’s when I discovered soap curls.

Soap curls are thin slivers of soap that you peel or shave from a larger block. They naturally roll into these delicate, ribbon-like shapes that can be used as decoration, like on these gift box soaps.

Let ’em harden and they have this crunchy texture that feels like a gentle, satisfying scrub when you use them. If you’re into ASMR, the sound and feel of them is surprisingly relaxing, too.

You can also embed soap curls into soap loaf molds for a really beautiful, layered effect. It’s an easy way to make your soaps look more professional and artisan without a ton of extra effort.

So if you’re ready to add a little texture and visual interest to your melt and pour projects, let’s start with the basics.

Curling Tools

 • Vegetable peeler — This is one of the best tools for making thin, delicate curls roughly ½” – 1″ wide. It gives you nice control and creates those pretty ribbon shapes.
 • Y-shaped peeler — If you want slightly thicker curls with a bit more texture, a Y peeler is perfect. It shaves off wide, thick ribbons that can be turned into roses or embedded into soap bars.
 • Sharp knife — Use this if you want straight, wide, rustic-looking curls that you shape by hand.
 • Clay trimming tools — These are great for making small, wabi sabi curls. They give you more control for creating organic-looking ribbons that have a really pretty imperfect feel.
 • Citrus zester — This creates lots of small, thin curls. It’s perfect if you want a more delicate, confetti-like look from fine, festive ribbons.

Soap Making Supplies

These supplies are pretty standard to all melt and pour soap projects. The only one you may not have seen pop up before is glycerin, but the rest are things you should have in your soap making toolkit already.

 • Melt and pour soap base — Technically, you can use clear or white, depending on the look you’re going for. Clear bases work great if you want translucent, glassy curls, while white bases give you a more opaque, classic soap look. In my experience clear base is bit “stretchier” and gives you more curl than white soap base, thanks to the extra glycerin. But if you’re dead set on using white soap, I have a fix for it’s lack of stretch (see below).
 • Vegetable glycerin — This is the secret ingredient for making your soap more bendable and easier to curl. If you’re using white soap base, extra glycerin is a must for getting those pliable curls that hold their shape. Either, you can add a tablespoon or two of liquid glycerin to white soap base. Or you can mix clear (glycerin) soap base with white soap base and get the same affect.
 • Mica or liquid soap colorants — These are optional, but they’re a fun way to add color to your curls. I like using mica for a shimmery effect, but liquid colorants work just as well if you want solid, vibrant colors.
 • Fragrance or essential oils — Also optional, but adding a scent elevates your soap ever so slightly. Just make sure to use skin-safe fragrance oils or essential oils.
 • Microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup — You’ll need this for melting and pouring your soap base. A glass measuring cup with a pour spout makes things easier, but any microwave-safe container will work.
 • Spray bottle with rubbing alcohol — This helps eliminate air bubbles on the surface of your soap and can also be used to help curls stick to the top of a soap loaf if you’re using them as decoration.

Methods for Making Soap Curls

Here’s a high-level tutorial on the different ways to make soap curls. The method you choose depends on the tools you have and the look you’re going for. If you’d like more detailed instructions for working with soap base, check out our Complete Guide to Using Melt-and-Pour-Soap.

Prepare the Soap

 1. Start by cutting your soap base into manageable chunks so it melts evenly. You don’t want to put big blocks in the microwave, because they’ll heat unevenly and can scorch in some spots. Note: for this project, I used a 50-50 blend of white soap base and glycerin soap base. If using white base, make sure to add glycerin in some form or another, either by adding 1-2 tablespoons of liquid glycerin or by blending with clear soap base.
 2. Melt the soap in the microwave in short 20-30 second bursts. Stir it frequently to make sure you get a smooth, even consistency.
 3. If you’re using essential oils or mica for color, mix them in while the soap is still warm.
 4. Pour the soap into a silicone mold (the temperature of the melted soap base doesn’t matter here) and let cool. For smaller curls, I recommend using small, single cavity molds, which keep the curls from getting too long and breaking. For big, thick curls, you’ll need to use a loaf mold instead. If you’re not sure, just refer to the method instructions below.

How To Make Soap Curls Using Tools

1. Vegetable Peeler

Pour soap into a single cavity mold and let cool. Once your soap is unmolded and fully cooled, hold the block firmly in one hand. If it’s slippery from the glycerin, use a paper towel for a better grip. Run the peeler along the long, flat side of the block.

Let the soap naturally curl as you peel. If it doesn’t curl on its own, use your fingers to gently shape it into a ribbon while it’s still flexible.

Be careful! The thin curls can be fragile, especially if your soap is on the harder side.

2. Citrus Zester

Create a small bar of soap using a single-cavity mold. Drag the citrus zester lightly across the wide, flat side of a soap block. This creates lots of small, delicate curls that look almost like confetti. It’s a great option if you want a more subtle, layered effect.

3. Clay Trimming Tools

Pull the tool lightly across the flat face of a bar of soap. The curls will have an imperfect, organic look that I think looks really nice.

To keep creating clean curls, use a knife to cut the tattered soap off the bar and create a flat surface to work from. This prevents the curls from getting messy or uneven.

4. Y Shaped Peeler

Instead of creating a small block of soap, pour roughly 1 inch of melted soap into the bottom of a loaf soap mold. Let it cool completely.

Cut the cooled soap into 2 inch wide strips that’ll fit your Y peeler. Then run the peeler across the soap in smooth, even strokes to create thicker strips that you can form into curls using your hands.

5. Make Soap Curls by Hand – The Thin Pour Method

Pour a thin (approximately ⅛ – 1/16 of an inch) layer of soap into a loaf mold. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to set partially. The timing depends on how thick your layer is, but you want it firm enough to handle without breaking.

Remove the layer from the mold and cut into 1-2″ wide strips. Then roll or curl it by hand while it’s still pliable. Allow the curls to set and firm up a bit more before using in soaps.

Ways to Use Soap Curls

Once you’ve mastered the basics of making soap curls, the fun part is figuring out how to use them. There are so many ways to get creative with these little ribbons, and honestly, experimenting is half the fun.

1. ASMR “crunchy soap”

If you’re more into the sensory side of soap making, you can decorate the tops of your bars with lots of curls to create that satisfying, crunchy texture. The sound and feel of peeling and using these soaps is oddly relaxing.

2. Embedding them in soap loaves

One technique I love is using the Pour-Thin method to create a long sheet of soap, then rolling it long-ways (like a Fruit Roll-Up) to make a tube-like curl. You can embed this inside a loaf soap mold for a really stunning cross-section when you cut the bars. For more tips on embedding shapes in soap, check out this post.

3. Mix and match for unique effects

Try mixing colors for a confetti look, or vary the curl thickness to add dimension. You can also combine soap curls with shredded soap for even more texture. Embedding curls in transparent soap creates a really cool, suspended look, while white soap gives you a more classic, layered look.

4. Making soap roses and floral designs

After making curls with either a vegetable peeler or cheese planer, you can roll them in a way that looks like roses. It takes some practice, but the results are gorgeous and perfect for special occasion soaps or gifts.

I’ve found that thicker curls (like those made with a cheese planer) creates better roses because the soap has enough thickness to stand up and look like petals.

5. Soap Curl Gift Soap

These festive gift box soaps look like tiny wrapped presents, complete with overlapping gold ribbons and soap curl bows on top. And since they’re made with melt and pour soap, they make perfect last-minute holiday gifts.

Soap Curl Troubleshooting

Making soap curls can take a little practice, so don’t feel bad if your first batch doesn’t turn out perfectly. Here are some common challenges and how to fix ’em.

Cracked curls — If your curls are cracking or breaking as you make them, try adding 1-2 tablespoons of liquid glycerin to the melted soap. This increases flexibility and makes the soap easier to work with.

Air bubbles inside curls or embeds — Air can get trapped when you’re embedding curls into a soap loaf. To fix this, embed them at an angle so any trapped air has a chance to escape as the soap sets. Also make sure to spray the soap both before and just after pouring it.

Curls falling apart — If your curls are fragile and falling apart after you’ve made them, lightly spritz them with rubbing alcohol. This helps set them and keeps their shape intact.

Curls melting when embedding or pouring over — This happens when the soap you’re pouring is too hot. Make sure your over-pour soap is at a lower temperature (around 140°F or below is best). This way, it won’t melt the curls when it makes contact.

Uneven or floppy curls — If your curls aren’t holding their shape or they look messy, try using a sharper peeler, creating a thicker curl or working with firmer soap. You can also play around with adding a bit of glycerin to the base or adjusting your peel technique to get cleaner, more consistent ribbons.

FAQ

Can I use any melt and pour soap base?

Not all bases are created equal when it comes to soap curls. Bases that are too soft can end up mushy and won’t hold their shape. On the flip side, bases that are too hard may not curl nicely and could crack or break instead. You may need to try out several different soap brands or types to find one with a good balance between firmness and flexibility.

Do I have to use glycerin in the pour-thin method?

Glycerin helps make the soap more pliable and helps your curls hold their shape, especially when working with thinner curls. But it’s optional depending on your base. Some melt and pour soaps are already pretty flexible, so you might not need it at all. You made need to test a soap base and see how well it holds up.

Can I fragrance or color the curls?

Yes! You can add fragrance and color while the soap is melted. Just make sure everything is mixed well before pouring into your molds.

How long should I dry curls for ASMR?

If you’re going for that crunchy, satisfying ASMR texture, use thin curls and let them dry for about 5 weeks in a well-ventilated space. This gives them time to harden up and develop that crispy feel.

Can I curl cold process soap too?

Yes, cold process soap can work for curls once it’s fully cured and hardened.

Peppermint Date Bark Recipe

With Christmas just around the corner our family is in full holiday mode. That means hosting, baking, and making tasty treats like this peppermint date bark. It’s naturally sweetened with dates and is full of nutrients.

This dessert looks pretty on the plate for guests, but it shines just as bright for an everyday dessert for the family. I’ll make a double batch and freeze the extra for a quick and easy way to have dessert on hand.

Peppermint Date Bark Ingredients

You’ve probably heard of chocolate bark before. It usually involves waxy tasting, super sweet chocolate covered in fruit, nuts, or candy. Bark candy has gotten an upgrade in recent years and there are lots of great recipes. However, they can still rely on a lot of sugar.

Mighty Medjool Dates

This version though relies on Medjool dates for the bulk of the sweetness. These dates are full of fiber and have modest amounts of iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. They’re also a good source of vitamin B6 and copper. Medjool dates are rich in antioxidants to fight free radical damage.

Researchers have studied their carotenoid and phenolic acid antioxidants and discovered benefits when it comes to heart health. A 2021 study concluded eating whole dates helped improve heart health markers. This included better cholesterol levels, and lower oxidative stress and inflammation.

Cacao vs Chocolate Chips

Instead of regular chocolate chips, I used two kinds of cacao wafers for this peppermint date bark. Cacao wafers are pure chocolate without the added milk or sugar. They have calcium, iron, antioxidants, and other nutrients that are great for overall health.

Cacao butter wafers are made from the pure fatty part of the cacao bean. They’re similar to white chocolate chips, but again without the added milk and sugar. I added a little coconut oil to the cacao butter wafers and cacao wafers when melting for a more spreadable texture.

The addition makes this peppermint bark a great vegan, allergen-friendly option for anyone who wants to avoid dairy.

Nut Butter (and Substitutes)

I love the smooth, creamy flavor of almond butter in these. You can also make date bark with peanut butter. Need a nut free option? To make date bark without peanut butter or other nut butters, substitute sunflower butter. And instead of the chopped almonds, try pumpkin seeds or hemp seeds for some crunch.

While the original date bark recipes tasted more like a Snickers bar, these have a mint flavor. I added some crushed candy canes to the top for some festive sweetness. Most peppermint candy has ingredients I prefer to avoid, but I really like these ones from Yum Earth for an occasional treat. They’re naturally flavored with real mint, use organic sugar, and are colored with fruits and veggies.

Peppermint date bark is high in calories, but it’s also high in healthy fats and nutrition so it’s filling. Here’s how to make it!

Peppermint Date Bark Recipe

 • Fold a piece of parchment paper in half and lay it open on a flat surface. Slice each pitted date in half lengthwise, but don’t cut all the way through, the halves should remain attached. Arrange the dates on one half of the parchment in four rows of three.

 • Lightly wet the parchment paper. Fold the parchment over the dates and gently roll with a rolling pin to flatten them evenly.

 • Spread almond butter evenly over the flattened dates. Sprinkle the chopped almonds over the almond butter layer.

 • Fill a pot or the bottom of the double boiler with a few inches of water and bring to a simmer. Add the chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the top pot or bowl.

 • Pour the melted chocolate over the almond butter and date layer and spread evenly.

 • Place candy canes or peppermint candies in a small bag and crush with a rolling pin or heavy object. Sprinkle the crushed peppermint evenly over the chocolate.

 • Melt the cacao butter wafers in the top of the double boiler or glass bowl with 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil. Drizzle or pipe the cacao butter over thh top of the bark.

 • Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the top.

 • Lift the bark using the parchment onto a baking sheet and chill in the fridge or freezer until fully set, about 20–30 minutes.

 • Slice or break into pieces and enjoy!

Want to up your workout or just get more muscle relief? I’ve been a fan of vibration plates for years, but Power Plate really steps it up. Power Plate vibrates 35 times per second using a special frequency called a PrecisionWave.

When you stand or sit on it your body will naturally attempt to fight back against the vibrations by trying to stabilize itself. This natural reflexive response to the vibrations ?activates more muscles? and boosts fat burning. While a regular workout uses about 55% of your muscles, using a Power Plate recruits 95% of muscle fibers!

Get the Deal: Get 25% off sitewide on all Power Plate products plus a free Power Plate Pulse Massage Gun with every purchase.

Christmas activities for kids

45+ Christmas Activities for Kids to Do This Holiday Season

For many of us, Christmas time means a little more time with family and a break from school. We do an adventure points system over summer break, but I wanted to brainstorm some more Christmas ideas. Here are some fun Christmas activities for kids that encourage creativity, imagination, and movement during the holiday season.

Christmas Activities for Kids

I already have a big list of 100+ boredom-busting activities for kids. But sometimes it’s nice to have something a little more in the holiday spirit for them to do. Most of these easy Christmas activities for kids are free, can be done at home, or are near you.

Maybe your kids are home on Christmas break and you’re looking for a fun family activity to do together. Or maybe they’re getting a little bored and are looking for something hands-on.

Our family focuses on gratitude and giving over the Christmas season, so you’ll find plenty of kid-friendly ideas that line up with that principle. There’s just something a little magical about this time of year and it’s nice to enjoy fun Christmas activities alongside a mug of (healthy) hot cocoa.

The ideas below aren’t divided by age, but you may find that some of your kids will enjoy one activity over another. Older kids aren’t as thrilled with sensory bins and toddlers aren’t really able to do an activity like snowboarding. So pick and choose what works best for your family.

Some of these work well as Christmas party activities for kids if you’re hosting a family gathering. Or if you’re an educator, they can be done in school in a classroom setting.

Christmas Playdough

Playdough is a hit with preschoolers everywhere and it’s easy to make your own. I like this playdough recipe here, plus it’s gluten-free for kids who have allergies. I’ll add a little natural red or green food coloring to make it holiday colored. Add a little peppermint extract to the batch to make a fun candy cane playdough!

Holiday Themed Sensory Bin

This one is great for toddlers and preschoolers. Even kids who are a little older love getting their hands in a bin of rice or beans for sensory play! The best sensory activity is one that encourages creativity and free play. It’s not as fun if the parent spends more time putting all of the details together than the kids do playing with it.

It’s also a great opportunity for little ones to use tweezers, spoons, and other utensils to transfer the objects from one container to another. This is a fun way to practice fine motor skills.

 • Make a cinnamon themed bin with rice, cinnamon sticks, pine cones, and little gingerbread themed items from around the house.
 • Create a natural Christmas sensory bin with pine cones, cranberries, fir branches, and small pieces of cut wood or branches. Mix them into a base of red beans, dried peas, and white beans (like navy or lima), for a red, white, and green theme.

Christmas Craft Activities For Kids

You may be a paper plate, popsicle stick, and glitter kind of family or maybe your kids prefer less crafty art projects. I enjoy sitting down with the kids to draw or paint, and we’ve done several art projects this way together. Here are a few holiday crafts the whole family can do together.

 • Cut out paper snowflakes from white paper and hang them up to display
 • Make a Christmas tree craft out of construction paper, popsicle sticks, or miniature ornaments. Older kids can make one out of scrap wood.
 • Pull out the pom poms and make a festive photo ornament wreath.
 • Try an origami Christmas project.

Science Experiments

Do a science experiment (together or have the kids do one on their own). I love this book for the kids because it has projects they can mostly do themselves. And I don’t have to buy any special ingredients or supplies.

KiwiCo also offers a subscription box for those who love having science experiments delivered. They also have art and craft boxes if that’s your thing. I like that they have options for everyone from babies to teens (and older) and for different budgets.

Fingerpaint

If your kids aren’t old enough to wield a paintbrush yet, then try this edible finger paint! I use spirulina or spinach for the green color and beets for a pinkish red. They have a lot of fun painting with it and I don’t worry if they get some in their mouth. The art projects only last for about a day, so I’ll snap a picture if it’s something I want to keep.

Make Your Own Crayons

Kids can have fun making their own beeswax crayons with this DIY project. Use a silicone mold in fun, Christmas themed shapes like gingerbread, trees or snowmen.

Build a Gingerbread House

A candy covered gingerbread house isn’t something you’re going to find on my table. However, there is a way to get in on the fun and still be (relatively) healthy. I’ll make sweets for the kids on occasion, just with healthier ingredients.

Here’s a tutorial for an AIP gingerbread house or a regular version that you can easily make with organic ingredients. Dried fruit, nuts, coconut shreds, and dark chocolate make great decorations. Stick it all on with the frosting recipe from the bottom of this vanilla cake post.

Bake Christmas Cookies

One year my kids wanted gingerbread cookies so I came up with this molasses cookies recipe. It has all the flavors of gingerbread without the junky ingredients. Coconut macaroons, snickerdoodles and chewy chocolate cookies are also a big hit at our house.

This is the perfect opportunity for the kids to bake some treats for the neighbors, nursing home residents, or extended family and give as a gift.

Make a Christmas Card

Christmas is the one time of the year when we all wear coordinating outfits and snap a family picture. Even if you’re like us and send out a family photo Christmas card, you can pair it with a homemade card. Kids can use construction paper, paint, and markers to make their own Christmas cards with a heartfelt note. These can either be mailed or hand delivered.

Festive Marshmallows

Christmas activities for kids can be delicious too. Years ago I started making my own homemade marshmallows. The kids love the taste and they’re full of gut healing gelatin and naturally sweetened.

These matcha marshmallows are a festive green color. Or add some peppermint extract (instead of vanilla) to my homemade marshmallows recipe for a seasonal flavor.

Christmas Songs

You can play some Christmas songs in the background while the kids are doing chores around the house, cooking meals, or doing fun projects. Do some Christmas song karaoke or dance to your favorite tunes for fun movement.

Advent Calendar

Countdown to Christmas day with an Advent calendar. I use this one that gives a prompt for a kind act we can do each day. It takes the focus off of getting stuff and encourages us to do for others. Here are more ways our family honors the advent season.

Christmas Movies

Make a list of Christmas movies to watch together and make some popcorn and snacks. We keep a basket of blue light blocking glasses in our living for everyone on family movie nights. It’s a Wonderful Life is one of our favorites that we watch every year.

Capture the Memories

Every year I gift the kids a photo book with some of their favorite memories from the past year. They always look forward to it and enjoy looking back on what they’ve been up to. Kids can make their own keepsake photo books with their holiday memories. They can also make one with favorite family recipes from the holiday season.

Some kids may need a little more help than others with formatting their special photo book, but places like Mixbook make it really easy.

Sip on Cocoa

Hot cocoa is a must have in our house. Even better if it has some homemade marshmallows on top! Make some homemade cocoa to sip on while wrapping gifts or reading a favorite Christmas book. I also like this healthy premade hot chocolate that’s packed with superfoods (like medicinal mushrooms).

Make a DIY Christmas Snowglobe

If your kids are anything like mine were, they’re fascinated with snowglobes. They can make their own with a small figurine or ornament and a mason jar. Here’s a simple tutorial for how to make a glitter snow globe from a Mason jar.

DIY Christmas Ornaments

If your kids like working with air dry or oven bake clay, then they can have fun making their own customized ornaments. Salt dough is another great way to make homemade ornaments, even for young kids. Little ones can make a handprint ornament to give to the grandparents. Or use cookie cutters to make Christmas shapes to decorate.

Get the tutorial for how to make salt dough ornaments here.

Make a Garland

The kids can make a popcorn garland or string together cranberries and dried oranges. This is a fun activity to do while listening to a favorite Christmas book or music. You can hang the finished garlands around the Christmas tree, the stairway, or even the wall.

Get the instructions for how to make a DIY natural Christmas garland here.

Craft a Window Display

Decorate the window for a festive Christmas display. Kids can hang up some Christmas lights, garlands, or ornaments for passers-by to see. You can even get large, removable holiday themed stickers for the kids to put on the glass.

Make a Gnome Garden

Some kids love fairy gardens and can rearrange and play with the pieces for hours. Help the kids make a holiday themed version with gnomes. You can add little gnome figurines, rocks, moss, twigs, and other natural ingredients to the garden. Lincoln logs also make great gnome houses!

Learn how to make your own gnome (or fairy) garden here.

Christmas Games For Kids

Anything that requires movement and creativity is a win in my book.

Make a Holiday Wreath

My girls started sewing at a young age and they’ve had a lot of fun with sewing projects over the years. This easy burlap wreath tutorial can be customized to make any shape you want. I did an egg for Easter, but kids could also cut out and sew a gingerbread man, a star, or a Christmas tree.

Get the instructions for a DIY burlap wreath here.

Christmas Tree

Find a local Christmas tree farm and go pick one out together. Whether you opt for a real tree or an artificial one, decorating it is another favorite Christmas activity. Don’t forget to put on some Christmas music and sip on a peppermint mocha or homemade hot cocoa while you decorate!

Donate to Local Families in Need

The week before or after Christmas (when we’re not busy doing school), the kids and I go around the house looking for things to get rid of. Things that we can share with others that they’ll benefit from. This helps make room for the new gifts and items coming in on Christmas day. The idea isn’t to clear out junk, but to bless someone else with something they’ll love.

We also do what we call the surprise Santa tradition. We find another family, either through a local church or a domestic violence shelter who is in need. Then we’ll get them gifts, clothing, enough food for some meals, and gift cards. Even though we don’t actually meet them in person, my kids absolutely love doing this for others.

Go Christmas Caroling

Our neighborhood has a wagon full of carolers that go around singing Christmas carols to the neighbors. Your kids can go caroling around their own neighborhood, at a local hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility (if rules allow). It’s a great way to spread free Christmas cheer.

DIY Christmas Gifts

The kids can make their own Christmas gifts for friends and family. Younger kids may need a little more help with this one. Some popular DIY gifts around here are things like lotion bars and sugar cookie lip scrub. You can find a whole list of DIY gift ideas here.

Christmas Eve Feast

For years our family has had a fishy tradition. On Christmas Eve we’ll make a traditional Sicilian feast of the seven fishes. Yes, I really make 7 different types of fish! A lot of times it’s something small like an oyster, or a crab cake so we don’t end up eating a huge amount.

The kids love getting involved with the planning and the making of the meal. You can read more about how this tradition started for us and why we do it here.

Outdoor Christmas Activities for Kids

Get outside and into the fresh air with these Christmas activities for kids ideas.

Build a Snowman

If you live in an area where there’s snow, building a snowman is a timeless kid’s activity. Everyone can work together to build the ultimate snowman, or each family member can create their own. No snow? Make one inside with moon sand.

Christmas Lights

Many towns have Christmas light displays that are fun to go see. You may find one at the local park. Or maybe the neighbors don’t pull any punches when it comes to decorating their yards for Christmas. Take a walk around and enjoy the lights together!

Go Ice Skating

Ice skating is a fun way to get some more movement in during the colder weather. Even if you don’t live near a pond or lake that’s safe to skate on, you can probably find a local indoor or outdoor rink. Some offer discounts for groups or during certain (slower) times of the day.

Sledding

Of course, I couldn’t leave out this classic pastime. If you’re in an area with enough snow, then find a big hill and haul out the sleds. You may also be able to find a tobogganing track near your area.

Christmas Scavenger Hunt

Put together a neighborhood scavenger hunt. Make a list (or use pictures) of items the kids can find around the neighborhood. These can be things like Christmas lights, a snowman, a cardinal, and a wreath. They can work in teams or individually to find the items. Or instead of a checklist, turn it into a bingo card and see who can get 5 in a row first.

Here are a few more Christmas activities for kids:

 • Make eco-friendly cloth gift bags to wrap presents for family and friends.
 • Start a winter garden or plant a windowsill herb garden.
 • Whip up a batch of snow cream (if you’re in a snowy area).

Does your family have any special traditions or activities during the holidays? I’d love to hear about them! Let me know in the comments below!

peppermint mocha creamer

Homemade Peppermint Mocha Creamer (Dairy-Free)

It’s no secret that I’m an avid coffee drinker, even if I don’t drink it everyday. I’ve written many posts on the health benefits and controversies of coffee and have a podcast episode on my favorite mushroom coffee. And I have lots (and I do mean LOTS!) of recipes for my favorite coffee shop style drinks. So when I realized I could easily make my own festive peppermint mocha creamer, I was thrilled!

Peppermint Mocha Creamer

Store-bought coffee creamer comes in so many fun flavors. There’s the Chobani peppermint mocha creamer and even Starbucks has their own line of creamers. It’s kind of a bummer they’re so full of ingredients I try to avoid. Ingredients like carrageenan, high-fructose corn syrup, and hydrogenated oils.

And while many stores now have simpler coffee creamer with cleaner ingredients, they still have some downsides. This healthier peppermint mocha creamer is simple, easy, and tastes even better!

Dairy-Free Creamer Options

This coffee creamer is paleo and dairy-free thanks to its coconut milk base. I prefer using coconut milk for my peppermint mocha creamer since it’s naturally so thick and creamy. I like to add healthy fats to my coffee anyway. If you’d rather use a different milk, feel free. Oat milk and cashew milk are especially creamy options.

I add a little peppermint extract for flavor and maple syrup for natural sweetness. If you’re looking for a sugar free peppermint mocha creamer, try liquid stevia instead. Both the sweetener and flavor can be adjusted to suit your tastes. Want to try a different flavor? Simply swap out the peppermint for another extract, like vanilla, almond, or orange.

Peppermint Mocha Creamer Recipe

Dairy-free coffee creamer made with coconut milk, peppermint extract, and a touch of maple syrup.

 • Warm the can of coconut milk in a bowl of hot water for about 5 minutes to make it easier to pour.

 • In a pint-size mason jar, combine the coconut milk, peppermint extract, and maple syrup.

 • Put a lid on the mason jar and shake vigorously to mix.

 • Stir into coffee or milk for a festive treat.

 • Store leftovers in the refrigerator and use within 7-10 days.

 • Feel free to adjust the peppermint and syrup up or down to suit your tastes.
 • Omit the cocoa powder if you just want a peppermint creamer.

How to Use Homemade Coffee Creamer (of Any Flavor!)

The most obvious is, of course, to stir it into a fresh cup of coffee. However, there are a lot of other tasty options as well. I like to use it in leftover chilled coffee or cold brew coffee. It’s also great in tea without the cocoa powder if you’re more of a tea drinker.

My kids love it added to hot chocolate or just cold milk for a festive treat. You can also add it to homemade vanilla ice cream to make a shake.

Try a batch of this healthy creamer with vanilla extract instead of mint over steel cut oats for breakfast. I bet this recipe for gingerbread creamer would be delicious that way too!

More Homemade Hot Beverages to Try

When you’re longing for a hot and tasty beverage (that doesn’t cost $7 or more!) try these:

Side note: Don’t throw out your used coffee grounds — they have lots of uses!

Do you make your own coffee creamer? What’s your favorite flavor?

Thanksgiving Nails: Easy DIY Ideas to Celebrate in Style

The holiday season is right around the corner, and what better way to show your festive spirit than with Thanksgiving-inspired nails?

Professional nail art looks amazing but you can get in the holiday mood with DIY manicure. Here are easy DIY Thanksgiving nail ideas to celebrate in style.

]]>Jump to:

1. Fall-Inspired Base Colors

The perfect Thanksgiving manicure starts with colors that capture the season’s warmth.

The usual burgundies and deep reds are getting an upgrade this season. Instead of going for the same old wine-colored polish, try a deep berry shade with gold shimmer mixed in. It catches the light beautifully and adds something special to an otherwise basic manicure.

Dark forest greens are also having a moment. They’re moody enough for fall but still totally wearable for work or weekends.

For something different, try a deep navy blue. It’s unexpected for fall but works perfectly with autumn clothes and gives a sophisticated edge to any outfit.

The best part? These colors look great in any finish: glossy, matte, or somewhere in between.

How to Achieve Basic Fall Manicure

Step 1: Clean nails with polish remover and buff gently

Step 2: Apply a quality base coat to protect your nails

Step 3: Select your fall shade (try mixing burnt orange and copper)

Step 4: Paint 2-3 thin coats, waiting 2 minutes between each

Step 5: Add a shimmery top coat for extra shine

Step 6: For accent nails, add gold details or glitter

This classic look is perfect for those who want seasonal style without the fuss. The best part? It pairs perfectly with everything from cozy sweaters to fancy Thanksgiving dinner outfits.

2. Simple Leaf Design

Fall leaves are the perfect way to celebrate the season without being too obvious. This design looks impressive but uses basic techniques anyone can handle. The secret is not aiming for perfection because real leaves aren’t perfect either.

How to Create Fall Leaves

Step 1: Choose a fall-colored base (burgundy works great)

Step 2: Make three small dots in a triangle shape

Step 3: Use a thin brush to connect the dots

Step 4: Add a simple stem at the bottom

Step 5: Dot some gold polish for extra sparkle

Step 6: Lock in your design with top coat.

These delicate leaves bring a touch of nature to your manicure while keeping things elegant. They’re subtle enough for work but festive enough for holiday celebrations.

Want something easier? Try a gradient of fall colors across your nails, going from deep red to orange to yellow. It mimics the way leaves change color and looks way more complicated than it actually is.

You can also do a simple accent nail with a leaf design while keeping the rest of your nails solid.

3. Easy Plaid Pattern

Plaid screams cozy fall vibes and this nail version is easier than you’d think. The trick is focusing on one or two accent nails rather than trying to plaid everything. Trust me, your sanity will thank you later.

How to Create a Plaid Design

Step 1: Paint a light neutral base color

Step 2: Apply thin striping tape in parallel lines

Step 3: Paint over with your chosen fall shade

Step 4: Remove the tape while the polish is still wet

Step 5: Repeat the process with crossing lines

Step 6: Finish with a thick top coat.

This design looks complex but takes less than 30 minutes to create. It’s perfect for those who want to make a statement without spending hours on their nails.

4. Seasonal Squash

Now that you’ve mastered plaid, take it up a notch to create a simple pattern for pumpkins and squash. Perfect for celebrating the season’s bounty!

5. Copper Shimmer

This season’s glitter isn’t about looking like a disco ball. Instead, try polishes with fine shimmer that gives depth to fall colors.

A brown polish with copper shimmer or a grey with silver sparkles adds interest without going overboard.

These subtle sparkles work especially well in office settings where you want to keep things professional but still fun.

For weekends, you can go a bit bolder with metallic accents. Try painting just the tips of your nails with gold or copper polish, or add a thin metallic stripe down the center of each nail.

6. Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

Pumpkins are not just for your coffee anymore. Orange is having a real moment in nail art but forget about bright Halloween orange.

Look for burnt orange, terra cotta, and copper shades that feel sophisticated. These colors work especially well with matte top coats, which give them a velvet-like finish.

For a cute but not cutesy pumpkin design, paint tiny white pumpkin silhouettes on one or two nails while keeping the others in solid fall shades. Or try a gradient from orange to white for a candy corn effect that’s subtle enough for grown-ups.

7. Acorn Accents

Take a basic nude colored manicure up a notch with simple acorn shapes. Dot on black and white polish on the nail bed of an accent nail with black French tips.

8. Modern French Tips

The French manicure is back but with autumnal twists. Instead of white tips, try gold or copper. Or go for an ombre effect where the tip gradually fades into the base color.

This works beautifully with fall shades like burgundy fading into nude, or dark green fading into a lighter sage.

Another option is to do the tips in different fall colors on each nail, keeping the base neutral. This gives you the chance to wear all your favorite autumn shades at once without looking too busy.

9. Quick and Easy Options

Not everyone has time for complicated designs. A solid color in any fall shade looks perfectly seasonal and takes minutes to apply.

Dark purple, burgundy, or forest green are foolproof choices that go with everything in your fall wardrobe.

If you want something a little extra but still simple, try adding a single thin stripe of gold down the center of each nail, or just on the ring finger as an accent. It takes barely any extra time but makes your manicure look much more intentional.

Essential Tips for Success

Getting your Thanksgiving nail art right comes down to a few key practices that make all the difference in your final look.

Tip 1: Proper Nail Prep

Clean your nails thoroughly with polish remover and gently buff the surface. Push back your cuticles and trim any hangnails.

A smooth, clean canvas makes your design look more professional and helps it last longer. Apply a base coat and let it dry completely before starting your design.

Tip 2: Quality Tools Matter

Invest in a few basic tools like thin brushes, dotting tools, and striping tape. Good quality brushes make precise lines easier while dotting tools create perfect circles every time.

Clean your tools after each use to prevent polish buildup and keep them working like new.

Tip 3: Work in Good Lighting

Natural daylight or a bright desk lamp helps you spot mistakes and ensure even application. Poor lighting can make you miss spots or apply polish unevenly.

Position your workspace near a window or use a good LED lamp to see what you’re doing clearly.

Tip 4: Take Your Time

Rushing leads to smudges and mistakes. Allow each layer to dry completely before adding the next element.

If you’re creating detailed designs, practice on paper first to get comfortable with the motion. It’s better to spend extra time doing it right than to rush and start over.

Tip 5: Master the Clean-Up

Keep a small angled brush and acetone handy for tidying edges. Dip the brush in acetone and carefully clean around your cuticles after applying polish.

This simple step makes your manicure look salon-perfect. For detailed designs, use a cotton swab to fix small mistakes before they dry.

Tip 6: Seal Your Design

Apply your top coat carefully to avoid smearing designs. Start with a thin layer, then add a thicker one once the first is dry.

Make sure to cap the free edge of your nails to prevent chipping. Also, try reapplying top coat every few days to extend the life of your manicure.

Ready for the Holiday Table?

These nail designs are perfect for showing your holiday spirit while staying practical enough for all your Thanksgiving preparations. So have fun with it, experiment with different combinations, and most importantly, wear your design with confidence.

 • Plant Therapy has some amazing lotions, body butters, and essential oils! They create everything with high quality essential oils and are one of the most transparent brands I know.
 • Spring + Mulberry – Delicious chocolate bars sweetened only with dates. These come in a variety of amazing flavors like lavender rose and mango chili.
 • Pique Tea – So many great tea options from Pique. We’ve had the founder on the podcast and are impressed with the level of purity and testing they have in place for their teas. These are my favorite teas to have on hand.
 • Toups Organics – They have an incredible line of clean cosmetics, lotions, and even a baking-soda free deodorant for sensitive types.
 • Magnesium Oil – Spray on for relaxation, detox support, and even deodorant.
 • Massage – Sometimes it’s also nice to get a massage from a professional. She’ll love a gift certificate for a local massage therapist!
 • Fontana Candles – I really like these non-toxic candles and wax melts as they don’t have any petroleum byproducts, stabilizers, fragrance oils, or harmful dyes.
 • Made On – These hard lotion bars are easy to travel with, not messy, and just as good as homemade.

What gifts for her have you given over the years that have been a hit? Anything else you’d add to the list?

How To Create Diagonal Color Layers in Soap

How To Create Diagonal Color Layers in Soap

If you’ve been making melt and pour soap for a while, you’ve probably reached that point where plain, single-color bars just aren’t doing it for you anymore. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with simple soap. But once you get the hang of the basics, it’s natural to want to try something a little more interesting.

That’s where layering comes in.

Whether you’re going for bold stripes or a soft, stacked ombré effect, layering is one of those techniques that instantly elevates your soap game. And the best part? You don’t need any special equipment or advanced soap making skills.

Just a little patience, a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol, and a basic understanding of how temperature affects your layers. (Oh, and a good mold never hurt!)

So if you’re ready to take your melt and pour soap from basic to elevated, let’s talk about how to create layers in soap that look professional and stick together perfectly every single time.

Why Create Layers in Melt and Pour Soap?

Let’s start with the basics. Layering is exactly what it sounds like: you pour different colors or soap bases in stages, letting each one cool just enough before adding the next. It’s not rocket science, but there is a little technique involved (don’t worry, I’ll walk you through it).

The cool thing about layering is that it opens up a ton of design possibilities. You can create bold, punchy stripes. You can play around with ombré effects that fade from one color to the next (that’s a little more complicated and not covered here, but possibly in the future…). You can even alternate clear and opaque soap bases to add dimension and contrast that really makes your bars pop.

The secret to getting those clean, distinct layers? It all comes down to controlling temperature and timing.

Pour too hot and you’ll melt the layer underneath. Wait too long and your layers might not stick together at all.

Once you get the hang of it, layering is a super easy way to make soap that looks way more impressive than it actually is.

Supplies

Clear soap gives you that translucent, glassy look, while white soap makes your colors more opaque and vibrant. I like to alternate between the two so the layers really stand out.

 • Colorants–Mica powders, liquid soap dyes, or powdered herbs or botanicals all work here. Micas are my go-to because they’re skin-safe and nontoxic, though they’re a bit more subtle than traditional dyes.

If you want really bold, punchy colors, liquid soap dyes are the way to go. And if you’re keeping things natural, powders like beetroot or spirulina can give you soft, earthy tones.

 • Essential Oils–Totally optional, but this is where you can really personalize your soap.

You can use the same scent in every layer or switch it up for a more complex fragrance. Just remember to stick with skin-safe oils, especially if you’re gifting these bars (you don’t want to give the gift of a rash!)

 • Rubbing Alcohol in a Spray Bottle–Rubbing alcohol is your secret weapon.

A quick spritz before and after pouring each layer keeps them bonded together and gets rid of any surface bubbles that might mess up your design. And I’ve found that a bottle like this creates just the right amount of mist. Trust me, don’t skip this step.

Equipment

I’m partial to loaf molds because you can slice them into bars later and show off those gorgeous layers. But if you want individual soaps, cavity molds are perfect.

 • Heat-Safe Containers–You’ll need something to melt and mix your soap in.

These 16-ounce glass measuring cups with pour spouts are my favorite because they hold just enough soap for one layer and they make pouring really easy. If you’re doing multiple colors, grab one container per color to keep things moving smoothly.

 • Thermometer–Technically optional, but it makes life way easier.

Checking the temperature before you pour helps you avoid melting the layer underneath or ending up with layers that don’t stick. A basic kitchen thermometer does the trick, or you can opt for a digital instant read thermometer if you’ve got one.

 • Utensils–The usual suspects: stirring spoons, measuring spoons, and a sharp knife for cutting your finished soap into bars.

Optional Supplies

 • Chopstick or Skewer–Perfect for popping any stubborn bubbles that the rubbing alcohol doesn’t catch. Can also be used to scratch up a layer of soap that got too cold and may not bond properly to the next layer.
 • Small Ramekin or Book–These are great for tilting your mold if you want angled or diagonal layers. It’s a simple trick that adds a lot of visual interest without making things too complicated!
 • Extra Thermometers–If you’re working with several colors at once, having more than one thermometer means you can check all your containers quickly without waiting for one thermometer to cool down between checks.
 • Pipettes or Droppers–Super handy if you’re adding essential oils or colorants and want to be precise about how much goes into each layer.
 • Cutting Guide or Soap Cutter–Not essential for the layering process itself, but when it comes time to cut your loaf into bars, a soap cutter helps you get uniform slices that show off your layers perfectly.

How to Create Layers in Melt and Pour Soap

Since this post is all about technique (not a specific recipe), I’m going to walk you through the general process of layering melt and pour soap. You can adapt this to whatever colors, scents, and mold sizes you prefer. And if you want exact measurements and a step-by-step project, check out the holiday DIY Striped Soap post.

Step 1: Prepare Your Soap Base

Start by cutting your melt and pour base into small 1-inch cubes. This helps it melt evenly, prevents overheating or scorching, and saves you microwave time. Toss the cubes into a heat-safe container (one per color or layer) and pop it in the microwave.

Heat in short 30-second bursts, stirring well between each one, until the soap is just melted. The key word here is just. You don’t want to overheat it or the soap can scorch or get weirdly thick and hard to work with.

Step 2: Add Color and Fragrance

Once your soap is melted, stir in your colorant and fragrance. Go slow and gentle here because too much stirring can create bubbles, and bubbles are the enemy of clean layers.

This is also where you get to have fun. Each layer can have a different color, a different scent, or both.

Want a lavender layer that smells like lavender and a pink layer that smells like rose? Go for it. Just remember to stick with skin-safe essential oils if you’re planning to use or gift these bars.

Step 3: Pour the First Layer

To get those fun slanted lines, tilt your mold by placing a small ramekin or a bunched up kitchen towel underneath one side.

Then pour your first layer into the mold. It doesn’t matter how hot this first layer is since there’s nothing underneath it to melt. Once it’s in the mold, give the top a light spritz with rubbing alcohol to pop any bubbles. Then let it cool.

You’ll know it’s ready for the next layer when a thin film (or “skin”) forms on top. It should feel slightly soft and warm to the touch, but not overly wobbly or like there’s liquid underneath.

This usually takes about 10-15 minutes, but it depends on how thick your layer is and how hot the soap was when you poured it.

Step 4: Pour the Next Layer

Before you pour the next layer, spritz the cooled surface again with rubbing alcohol. This is super important because it helps the new layer bond to the old one without any gaps or air pockets.

Now here’s where temperature matters. Let your melted soap cool to around 140 degrees F before pouring.

If it’s too hot, it’ll melt right through the filmy layer underneath and you’ll end up with muddy colors instead of distinct stripes. If it’s too cool, the layers might not stick together properly and could split apart when you cut the soap into bars.

Pour slowly and carefully, and then spritz the top with alcohol again to get rid of any new bubbles.

Step 5: Repeat Layers

Keep going, alternating colors, until your mold is almost full. Always spritz with alcohol before and after pouring each new layer. It might feel repetitive, but trust me, it’ll make or break your layers.

If you’ve been tilting your layers up to this point, make sure to remove the ramekin and lay the mold on a flat surface before pouring the last layer. Then give it one last spritz and let the whole thing cool completely.

I’m talking several hours or even overnight. I know it’s tempting to pop it out of the mold early, but if you try to unmold it too soon, the layers might still be soft and could separate or warp.

Once it’s fully set, you can unmold your soap and cut it into bars. And that’s it! You’ve got gorgeous, professional-looking layered soap that’s perfect for gifting or keeping all to yourself.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Layers

Once you’ve got the basic process down, these little tricks will help you nail those clean, professional-looking layers every single time.

Keep alcohol nearby.

Seriously, keep that spray bottle within arm’s reach at all times. Spritz the surface of each layer right before you pour the next one. Think of the alcohol as the “glue” that makes your layers stick together. Then spritz again right after you pour to prevent any bubbles from cropping up. Trust me, you can’t use too much alcohol.

Create equal layers.

If you want your layers to be perfectly even, the easiest way to do it is to weigh your soap base and divide it into equal amounts before you start melting and coloring. So let’s say you’re filling a loaf mold and you want four layers. You’d divide your base into four equal portions, like 10 ounces each, and then color them separately.

But honestly? You don’t have to be that precise if you don’t want to. If you’re going for a more organic, free form look where some layers are thicker than others, just eyeball it.

Pour however much feels right for each layer and don’t stress about the measurements. Both approaches work, it just depends on the vibe you’re going for.

Don’t wait too long between layers.

Each one should be slightly soft to the touch and still warm. If you gently press your finger against it and it feels completely cool and solid, you’ve probably waited too long.

Use contrasting bases.

Want your layers to really pop? Try alternating between clear and white soap bases. The contrast makes each layer super distinct and gives your bars a ton of visual interest.

Tilt your mold.

This is one of my favorite tricks for taking layered soap to the next level. If you want diagonal or angled layers instead of straight horizontal ones, just prop one side of your mold up slightly while you pour.

A small ramekin or even a book works great for this. It’s such a simple thing, but it makes your soap look so much more fun and eye-catching.

Watch the temperature.

I know I already mentioned this about a thousand times already, but it’s worth repeating because temperature is ev-er-y-thing when it comes to layering.

Around 140 degrees F is the sweet spot for pouring layers. It’s cool enough that it won’t melt what’s underneath, but still warm enough to bond properly. If you don’t have a thermometer, let your melted soap sit for a few minutes after you take it out of the microwave. It should feel slightly hot to the touch.

Note: Some folks say to aim for 120-130 degrees, but I’ve found that 140 degrees keeps my layers from splitting as much, probably because it melts the layer underneath just enough to help them stick together.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with practice, layered soaps can be a little finicky. Here’s how to fix (or better yet, avoid) the most common problems you might run into.

Layers separated after cutting

This one’s frustrating because everything looks fine until you go to slice your soap and the layers just fall apart. This usually happens because you didn’t spritz with alcohol between layers, or you poured when the bottom layer was completely cold and had cooled too much.

Always, always spray alcohol between layers. And don’t wait too long between pours. The previous layer should still feel slightly warm and a little soft when you add the next one. If it’s totally firm and cool to the touch, you’ve waited too long and the layers won’t bond as well.

And if you did wait too long to pour the next layer, then I recommend pouring your next layer slightly too hot (say between 150 – 160 degrees F). Yes, it might melt the previous layer a little, but that’s what you need in order to keep your soap from splitting.

Colors bled together

Instead of clean stripes, you’ve got muddy, swirled colors where your layers should be. This happens when the soap is too hot, so it melts right through the layer underneath.

To fix this, let your melted base cool for a few minutes before pouring. Use a thermometer if you have one, or just test the temperature by touching the outside of your container. It should feel warm but not hot.

Uneven or slanted layers

Your layers looked straight when you poured them, but now they’re all wonky and uneven. This can occur if your mold isn’t sitting level, or if the soap cools unevenly (maybe one side was closer to a window or heat source).

Before you pour each layer, take a second to make sure that your workspace is flat and level. And try to let your soap cool in a spot where the temperature is consistent, away from drafts or direct sunlight.

Air bubbles between layers

You’ve got little pockets of air trapped between your stripes, which can make the layers look cloudy or cause them to separate. When this happens it means that you didn’t spray enough alcohol, or you poured too quickly and created turbulence in the soap.

Be generous with that alcohol spray. Give each layer a good spritz before pouring the next one. And when you pour, go slowly and gently. Try pouring along the side of the mold or over the back of a spoon to help the soap flow smoothly without creating bubbles.

FAQ

Can I use any type of melt and pour base?

Yep! You can layer clear, white, or any of the specialty bases like goat’s milk, shea butter, honey, or aloe. The only thing you need to make sure of is that they’re all melt and pour soap bases. Don’t try to mix melt and pour with cold process soap or anything like that.

Do I have to color each layer?

No, not if you don’t want to. You can absolutely alternate between colored and uncolored layers if you want a more subtle look. Or you can create an ombré effect by using different shades of the same color, going from light to dark (or vice versa). There are no rules here, so play around and see what you like.

How thick should each layer be?

Totally up to you and the look you’re going for. Thin layers have this elegant, delicate vibe. Thicker layers are bolder and more graphic. I usually aim for about a quarter to a half inch per layer to keep cooling time to a minimum, but you can go thinner or thicker depending on your mold size and how many layers you want to fit in there.

Can I add embeds between layers?

Definitely. Melt and pour soap layers are actually perfect for this. You can tuck small soap shapes, dried botanicals, or little surprises between the layers. Just make sure whatever you’re embedding is soap-safe and won’t bleed color or get gross over time.

How long should I wait between layers?

I think 15 minutes is a good rule of thumb, but it really depends on how hot the soap was when you poured it and how thick your layers are.

Do layered soaps take longer to cure?

Nope. One of the best things about melt and pour soap is that it doesn’t need any “curing” time at all. Once your soap is fully cooled and set (which takes a few hours to overnight), you can unmold it, cut it into bars, and start using it right away.

Can I use a single cavity mold instead of a loaf mold?

Yes, and the process is pretty much the same when you’re working with individual cavity molds instead of loaf molds. The main difference is that layers in smaller cavity molds tend to cool down faster, so you can usually move through the layering process a little more quickly.

Just remember the basics: spray each layer with rubbing alcohol before you pour the next one, and keep an eye on your temperatures. Those two things are non-negotiable, no matter what kind of mold you’re using.
