Priyanka Chopra’s beauty routine: A throwback to the skin secret revealed by her mother

Priyanka Chopra’s beauty routine: A throwback to the skin secret revealed by her mother

(Image Credits: Pinterest) Long before elaborate 10-step skincare routines and viral online trends, glowing skin often came down to simple, time-tested remedies passed down through generations. But when a celebrity-inspired skincare routine goes viral, people definitely give it a try, and today we’re dissecting the DIY remedy used by Priyanka Chopra and her mother.Over the years, fans have been eager to uncover the secret behind her luminous complexion, and one throwback revelation from her mother offered a glimpse into the beauty rituals that shaped the star’s skincare journey. In an old Instagram post, Dr Madhu Chopra shares her DIY besan-haldi face pack recipe that Priyanka swears by.

In the video, she says, “I have never used a face wash or soap on my skin. Occasionally, I go for scrubs to remove dead cells from my ageing skin. Thanks to this ubtan, I have always maintained healthy skin, free of pimples, acne, or pigmentation. My daughter and I use the same face pack for all our skin needs.” Let’s see how to make this DIY besan face pack at home. How to makeStep 1: Add 2 tablespoons of gram flour to a bowl, which will tackle your skin’s dryness.Step 2: Add some homemade cream with a spoonful of fresh yoghurt.Step 3: To prevent inflammation, boils, and acne issues, you can also add a hint of turmeric and blend everything with some cold milk.Dr Madhu Chopra also focused on the fact that it is best for people with dry skin. She said, “This recipe is for people with dry skin because my skin is very dry. It is also very easy to make and sticks to your skin like a mask. You can wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes. The outcome will be very good. You will see a difference in your previously tired skin, and after.” She continued and ended the video saying, “The skin below the eyes is very delicate. Don’t apply, don’t rub, don’t do anything here.” This is a gentle reminder that sometimes the most effective beauty solutions don’t come in luxury packaging, but some are rooted in traditional Indian beauty wisdom. The remedy highlights the power of natural ingredients and self-care, proving that age-old practices still hold power in the age of high-tech beauty products. As interest in DIY skincare continues to reign, this throwback beauty tip remains as relevant as ever.

The Best Summer Skincare Routine For Black Women: 5 Tips

The Best Summer Skincare Routine For Black Women: 5 Tips

  • Swap heavy creams for lightweight, hydrating formulas to combat humidity.

Source: Jacob Wackerhausen / Getty

Hot girl summer starts with healthy skin, and for Black women, that means keeping your glow protected while preventing the dark spots and uneven tone that can show up after long days in the sun. While melanin-rich skin offers some natural protection, summer heat, humidity, and UV exposure can still trigger hyperpigmentation, excess oil production, and skin irritation. The secret to maintaining that radiant, lit-from-within glow? A simple routine focused on hydration, brightening, and serious sun protection. So, what’s the best skincare routine for Black women in the summer? Here’s what to do, according to experts.

1. Use a gentle cleanser in the morning.

Source: Taras Grebinets / Getty

Start your mornings with a gentle cleanse. During the summer, your skin doesn’t need anything overly harsh.

NYC-based board-certified dermatologist Rose Ingleton told Allure during an interview on March 31 that she starts her day simply by splashing water on her face. A mild cleanser can also help refresh your complexion without stripping away its natural moisture. Skip aggressive scrubs and rough exfoliators, which can create irritation and increase the likelihood of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

2.  Use a Vitamin C serum to fight dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Next, reach for a vitamin C or antioxidant serum. Think of this step as your skin’s daily bodyguard. Antioxidants help fight environmental stressors, brighten dull skin, and support the fading of existing dark spots. Ingredients like THD Ascorbate, a stable form of vitamin C, are especially effective for melanin-rich skin because they help improve overall radiance without causing unnecessary irritation.

Ingleton told Allure that her go-to product is Future Bright Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum from her brand, Rose Ingleton MD.

“An antioxidant serum followed by an SPF each morning can ward off free radicals and prevent damage from the sun, especially the invisible kind present even on cloudy days,” she explained.

3. Hydrate your skin with lightweight products.

Source: VladimirFLoyd / Getty

As temperatures rise, it’s also time to swap out heavy winter creams for lightweight hydration. Gel moisturizers and water-based formulas provide plenty of moisture without feeling greasy or clogging pores. Look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which helps attract and retain water, leaving skin plump, smooth, and refreshed even during the most humid days. At night, she uses a gentle brightening cleanser to remove the day’s makeup and dirt.

Caroline Opene, medical director of the UCLA Health Skin of Color Clinic, echoed a similar sentiment during an interview with AARP in 2025.

Before washing her face at night, the skincare expert shared that she uses CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water to wipe off sunscreen, makeup and oil.

“A few nights a week, I use an alpha-hydroxy acid … toner for gentle exfoliation,” Opene further explained. “The rest of the nights, I’ll apply my prescription-strength retinoid tazarotene,” a light cream primarily used to treat acne, that keeps “breakouts at bay and reduces dark spots and has added anti-aging benefits.”

4. Use sunscreen.

Source: Marti Rossello Garrido / Getty

The real MVP of any summer skincare routine, however, is sunscreen. If you’re serious about protecting your glow, preventing hyperpigmentation, and slowing signs of premature aging, daily SPF is non-negotiable. Tiffany Clay, a board-certified dermatologist from Atlanta, told Allure that her personal favorites are Senté’s Invisible Shield Full Physical and the Glytone Hydra Lipid UV Mineral Sunscreen.

“They don’t leave a white cast on my skin, which I love,” she said.

Thankfully, today’s sunscreens are far more inclusive than ever. Invisible formulas leave no chalky residue and blend seamlessly into deeper skin tones, while newer mineral options feature warm tints that eliminate the dreaded white cast many Black women have struggled with for years.

Ultimately, the best summer skincare routine for Black women doesn’t have to be complicated. Cleanse gently, brighten strategically, hydrate consistently, and never leave home without SPF. Follow those simple steps, and you’ll spend less time worrying about dark spots and more time enjoying everything the summer season has to offer. Because the goal isn’t just surviving the summer heat, it’s glowing through it.

Hailey Bieber’s wellness routine might not be for everyone – here’s what to do instead

In an era where celebrity beauty brands are launched by the dozen, Hailey Bieber has accomplished something far more coveted: changing the way women take care of themselves. From glazed donut skin to peptide-packed lip treatments and the rise of “clean girl” minimalism, the model-turned-founder has become one of beauty’s most influential trendsetters.

The 29-year-old’s impact can be measured beyond sales figures. From popularizing “glazed donut skin” to “strawberry girl” makeup, Bieber has repeatedly turned personal preferences into full-blown industry obsessions. The result is a beautiful landscape increasingly shaped by trends that first gained traction on her Instagram feed and TikTok fan pages.

But Dr. Sherry McAllister, wellness expert and author of Adjusted Reality, believes there are longstanding downsides to the rising popularity of celebrity wellness routines.

• Hailey Bieber’s MAGA loving dad announces he’s retiring from politics

• Hailey Bieber admits to ‘uncomfortable and bizarre’ struggle with speculation over marriage

“As a healthcare provider, the concern is not the trends, but that each person has different healthcare challenges,” she explains.

Why Hailey Bieber’s wellness routine might not suit everyone

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror US, McAllister decoded how Bieber’s particular viral wellness trends might not suit everyone.

“Hailey Bieber has shared routines involving cold plunges, saunas, lymphatic drainage treatments, ice facials, specialized skincare protocols, Pilates, and highly curated beauty routines,” she says. “A patient suffering from a herniated disc in their back may find that Pilates flares up their condition due to nerve involvement.” She added that someone with cardiovascular issues or a history of strokes should strictly avoid cold plunges.

“The key is that people can often see celebrity influence and mistake its safety for their own situation,” McAllister remarks.

She further stated that celebrity wellness approaches are often “business-driven” and are driven by the agenda of increasing product sales.

“Optimization must fit the individual nervous system, lifestyle, and capacity, not someone else’s highlight reel. Whole-being care is highly curated for the person; it is not one-size-fits-all,” she notes.

Celebrities often operate with a level of support that most people simply don’t have access to -Credit:haileybieber/Instagram

TikTok’s beauty and wellness pressure machine

But the wellness culture flourishing on TikTok often comes with an unspoken expectation of perfection. Users are bombarded with videos promoting 4 a.m. wake-up calls, elaborate morning routines, strict supplement regimens, and meticulously curated self-care rituals, creating the impression that health is something to be optimized around the clock.

Critics argue that the trend can blur the line between well-being and obsession with self-improvement, turning everyday habits into yet another benchmark for success.

“The ability to juggle life stress, work, friends, and family is one part, but adding the pressure to look perfect and maintain an overwhelming list of to-dos can create anxiety and additional stress,” McAllister says.

The key to self-care is habit-stacking and consistency

McAllister instead advocates for habit-stacking and consistency. “The goal is consistency over time, not the intensity of trying to get everything right the first time. Hailey emphasizes hydration, walking, and a regular sleep routine. These are all achievable when small habits are improved over time,” she adds.

Celebrities often operate with a level of support that most people simply don’t have access to, from dermatologists, nutritionists, and personal trainers to makeup artists, assistants, and curated brand deals that shape their entire routine.

What looks like an effortless “everyday” glow or disciplined wellness schedule is usually the result of time, money and an entire professional ecosystem working behind the scenes. That makes it difficult—and arguably unfair—to compare those “perfect” routines to the realities of ordinary users trying to replicate them in their own daily lives.

“Focusing on perfectionism can make adaptation more difficult and can create nervous system overload rather than alignment,” the expert warns.

Simple wellness hacks to incorporate in your day-to-day life

The simple wellness hacks McAllister believes can be easily practiced by everyone include:

  1. Walking daily. Movement supports physiology, stress regulation, circulation, and cognitive performance.

  2. Protecting sleep. Sleep is nervous system recovery.

  3. Hydrating intentionally. Hydration supports every system.

  4. Getting adjusted: your nervous system functions at its best when it’s balanced and aligned.

  5. Posture resets throughout the day. Alignment influences breathing, energy, and movement quality.

  6. Practicing “micro-replenishment.” Two minutes of breathing, movement, stretching, or stepping outside can change physiology.

  7. Building consistency before complexity.

Beauty isn’t just about good looks anymore, it’s about making choices that are good for you and the Earth. People are waking up to the reality of environmental problems, and eco-friendly beauty isn’t just a buzzword these days. It’s a shift in how we live. You don’t have to flip your whole routine upside down either. Small, practical tweaks add up over time.

How to make your beauty routine more eco-friendly?

“To create an eco-friendly skincare routine, focus on reducing your environmental impact. You can do this by using products wisely, reducing waste, and choosing ethically made items. To help the planet and your skin, choose refillable packaging, switch from single-use products, and opt for multi-purpose items,” Dr Blossom Kochhar, beauty expert and aromatherapist, tells Health Shots.

1. Start by paying closer attention to the products you use

Many typical skincare products contain ingredients that aren’t great for the environment. Think about how they’re sourced, how they’re made, and what happens when you rinse them off. Instead, look for naturally derived ingredients. Stuff like plant oils, botanical extracts, essential oils, and formulas that break down easily after use. These options are gentle on your skin and on the planet.

2. Then there’s the matter of packaging

The beauty industry generates a staggering amount of plastic waste each year. Most of it ends up in landfills or pollutes the ocean. Look for products made of glass, aluminium, or recycled plastic. Refillable packages are popping up everywhere, giving you the power to cut out single-use containers.

3. Consider simplifying your routine

The internet is loaded with 10-step skincare routines. But honestly, your skin probably doesn’t need all that. A gentle cleanser, a toner, a good moisturiser, sunscreen, and maybe one treatment product sometimes that’s enough. This approach keeps your skin and your conscience clear, since you’re not loading up your bathroom shelf (and the landfill) with stuff you hardly use.

4. Don’t forget how much water gets used in beauty routines

Both when you wash up and in the manufacturing of products themselves. Small steps like turning off the tap while cleansing, adopting water-saving habits, or choosing concentrated products can save more water than you might expect.

5. Support cruelty-free brands and companies

Supporting brands that conduct business ethically is another way to make a difference. Look for companies that don’t test on animals, that are open about where their ingredients come from, and that care about their full supply chain. Certifications can help you spot who’s genuine.

Eco-conscious beauty isn’t about perfection

Real beauty is about finding the sweet spot, caring for yourself while caring for the world around you.

  • Try not to get swept away by shiny new product drops or social media fads. It’s easy to collect more jars and bottles than you’ll ever use. Before buying, ask yourself what you really need and whether a new product will actually improve your routine or collect dust.
  • And here’s something simple but powerful don’t open a new product till you finish the last one. Those half-finished or expired bottles create waste (and waste money). Stick to what you need, use it up, and buy replacements only when it’s time.
  • Eco-conscious beauty is about making steady progress with little changes. Each choice, whether it’s a better formula, less packaging, or just saying “no” to impulse buys, helps the planet heal a little, and that’s something to feel good about.

Squalane Moisturizers Worth Adding to Your Routine

Squalane Moisturizers Worth Adding to Your Routine

Squalane has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare over the last few years, appearing in everything from lightweight serums to rich overnight creams.

Unlike some trend-driven skincare ingredients, squalane is valued largely because of how well it works with the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

The skin naturally produces a lipid called squalene, which helps keep the surface soft, balanced, and moisturized. Over time, natural squalene levels gradually decline, which is one reason skin can start to feel drier, tighter, or less resilient with age and environmental stress.

Squalane is the stabilized version used in skincare formulations. Because it closely mimics the skin’s natural oils, it’s widely used in moisturizers designed to support hydration without feeling overly heavy or greasy.

Today, squalane is commonly recommended for a wide range of skin types, including oily, dry, combination, and sensitive skin. Its versatility has also made it increasingly popular within minimalist skincare routines that focus on fewer, barrier-supportive ingredients.

Dermatologists often recommend squalane-based moisturizers because they tend to layer well within both simple and ingredient-focused skincare routines.

Here’s what to know about how squalane works, how it compares with other moisturizing ingredients, and what to look for in a moisturizer that includes it.

Squalene vs. Squalane: What’s the Difference?

The names are similar, but they refer to two different forms of the ingredient.

Squalene (with an “e”) is a lipid naturally produced by the skin. While it plays an important role in maintaining moisture balance, it oxidizes quickly when exposed to air, which makes it difficult to use effectively in skincare formulations.

Squalane (with an “a”) is the hydrogenated, more stable version commonly used in skincare products.

Historically, some forms of squalane were sourced from shark liver oil. Today, many skincare brands use plant-derived squalane from sources like sugarcane, olives, or rice bran instead.

What Squalane Does for the Skin

Squalane is often described as a moisturizing ingredient, but its role in skincare goes beyond basic hydration. Here are some of the main ways squalane supports the skin within a daily skincare routine:

  • Helps Support the Skin Barrier

Squalane functions as an emollient, helping soften the skin while reducing moisture loss from the surface. Because it closely resembles naturally occurring skin lipids, it’s frequently included in products designed to support a compromised or dryness-prone skin barrier.

  • Delivers Lightweight Hydration

Unlike heavier occlusive ingredients that can feel greasy or overly rich, squalane is known for its lightweight texture and quick absorption. This is one reason it’s commonly used even in products formulated for oily or acne-prone skin types.

  • Works Well Alongside Other Ingredients

Squalane is often paired with ingredients like:

  • hyaluronic acid
  • ceramides
  • niacinamide
  • peptides
  • antioxidant-rich botanical extracts

Its texture makes it easy to layer within both simple and more advanced skincare routines.

  • Helps Maintain Skin Comfort

Because squalane is generally well tolerated, it’s frequently recommended in routines focused on dryness, sensitivity, or barrier support.

Squalane vs. Hyaluronic Acid vs. Ceramides

These ingredients are often grouped together in moisturizing products, but they each support the skin differently.

Rather than competing ingredients, they’re often complementary.

A simple layering approach may include a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid followed by a ceramide-rich or squalane-based moisturizer to help support moisture retention and overall skin barrier function.

Many moisturizers now combine multiple barrier-supportive ingredients together in a single formula.

Is Squalane Good for Every Skin Type?

Squalane is considered one of the more versatile moisturizing ingredients because of its lightweight feel and broad compatibility. Its lightweight, non-greasy texture makes it suitable for a wide range of skin concerns, including dryness, sensitivity, dehydration, and excess oil.

What to Look for in a Squalane Moisturizer

Not all squalane moisturizers are formulated the same way. Texture, supporting ingredients, and overall formulation all influence how a product performs. Here are some of the main things to look for when choosing a formula:

Many modern formulations use plant-derived squalane sourced from sugarcane or olives.

  • Barrier-Supportive Ingredients

Squalane is often paired with ingredients like:

  • ceramides
  • hyaluronic acid
  • niacinamide
  • botanical antioxidants

These combinations can help support hydration and overall skin comfort.

A well-formulated squalane moisturizer should absorb easily without leaving a greasy or heavy finish. Lightweight cream or gel-cream textures often work especially well for daytime layering under sunscreen and makeup.

People with sensitive skin may prefer formulas without heavy fragrance or high concentrations of drying alcohols.

How to Layer Squalane in Your Routine

Because squalane helps soften and seal in moisture, it’s typically applied after lighter water-based products and before SPF.

A simple morning and evening routine may look something like this:

Morning Routine
Evening Routine

Gentle cleanser
Gentle or double cleanse

Hydrating serum
Treatment serum or retinoid

Squalane moisturizer
Squalane moisturizer

SPF 30+
Optional facial oil

Squalane also layers easily alongside ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, and hyaluronic acid in both simple and active-focused skincare routines.

Choosing a Lightweight Moisturizer for Daytime Use

For daytime use, many people prefer a lightweight moisturizer that combines hydration with barrier-supportive ingredients without feeling overly rich under sunscreen or makeup.

Squalane is often paired with ingredients like botanical antioxidants, hydrators, and soothing plant extracts to support daily moisture balance while maintaining a lightweight texture.

Products like Three Ships’ Radiance grape stem cell + squalane day cream combine sugarcane-derived squalane with antioxidant-rich botanical ingredients in a formula designed for everyday hydration and skin barrier support.

Grape stem cell extract is commonly included in skincare formulations because of its antioxidant content, particularly polyphenols and resveratrol, which are often associated with antioxidant support against environmental stressors.

The Bottom Line

Squalane is widely used in skincare because it helps support hydration and skin comfort without feeling overly heavy or greasy.

Because it layers easily alongside other skincare ingredients, squalane works well in both simple and more advanced skincare routines.

Whether used in a simple moisturizer or paired with ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or antioxidants, squalane can help maintain moisture balance and overall skin comfort.

For people looking for lightweight daily hydration, a well-formulated squalane day cream can support moisture balance without adding unnecessary heaviness.

Its compatibility with different skin types and skincare ingredients is part of the reason squalane remains a popular choice in modern skincare formulations.

Beyond SPF: Why the WHO’s New UV Radiation Guidelines Should Change Your Morning Routine

Most people still think about sun protection in highly simplified terms. If sunscreen is applied before leaving the house, the job feels complete.

Yet dermatologists and public health researchers have spent years pointing out that UV exposure behaves far less predictably than most daily skincare routines account for, particularly as people spend longer hours moving between outdoor spaces, reflective surfaces, transit systems, and screens throughout the day.

That conversation has intensified as global health organisations place greater emphasis on cumulative exposure rather than isolated sunburn events alone. Skin damage often builds gradually through ordinary routines: morning commutes, outdoor lunches, driving, walking errands, or sitting near windows for long periods without realising how consistently UV radiation reaches the skin.

The skincare industry has responded by shifting more attention toward barrier support, antioxidant protection, hydration balance, and daily resilience alongside traditional sunscreen use. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware that SPF alone rarely addresses every factor contributing to visible skin aging or environmental stress.

This article will explore why updated conversations around UV radiation are changing skincare habits, how cumulative exposure affects the skin over time, and why morning routines increasingly focus on layered protection rather than sunscreen alone.

Why UV Exposure Is More Complex Than Most People Realise

Public understanding of UV damage still tends to revolve around obvious overexposure. Redness, peeling, or painful sunburn remain the most recognisable warning signs, even though long-term skin changes often develop through repeated low-level exposure that appears harmless in the moment.

UV exposure has also changed the way many consumers approach anti-aging skincare. Fine lines are no longer viewed separately from sun damage, dehydration, pigmentation, or barrier stress caused by daily environmental exposure. As a result, the best anti-aging cream is increasingly judged not only by wrinkle-focused ingredients but by how well the formula supports hydration, antioxidant protection, and long-term skin resilience under constant UV pressure.

The World Health Organisation’s guidance around UV radiation emphasises the broader health impact of cumulative ultraviolet exposure, particularly its relationship to premature skin aging, eye damage, immune suppression, and increased skin cancer risk. Those concerns have become increasingly relevant as warmer temperatures and changing outdoor habits alter how much incidental exposure people experience daily.

Morning Routines Are Becoming More Layered

The traditional ‘cleanse, moisturise, SPF’ structure still forms the foundation of many routines, but skincare increasingly focuses on what happens underneath sunscreen rather than sunscreen alone.

Hydration plays a larger role than many people realise because dehydrated skin often becomes more reactive when exposed to heat, sunlight, pollution, or air conditioning throughout the day.

Barrier-supportive ingredients such as ceramides, peptides, antioxidants, and botanical oils are also receiving more attention because they help reinforce the skin’s ability to maintain stability under environmental stress.

That does not mean sunscreen becomes less important. If anything, it becomes part of a broader support system rather than functioning as the single line of defense.

UV Damage Rarely Looks Dramatic at First

One reason cumulative sun damage remains difficult to address is that it develops gradually enough to feel invisible in daily life. Texture changes, pigmentation, dryness, uneven tone, and collagen decline often emerge slowly across years rather than appearing suddenly after one afternoon outdoors.

That delayed effect contributes to why many people underestimate how much ordinary exposure shapes long-term skin condition. Recent reporting from IBTimes on record skin cancer cases highlighted growing concern among health experts around sun exposure habits and the cumulative nature of skin damage.

Consumers are also becoming more aware that recovery matters alongside protection. Skin exposed to repeated environmental stress often benefits from routines focused on maintaining hydration balance, calming irritation, and supporting long-term barrier health rather than relying entirely on corrective treatments later.

Why Barrier Health Has Entered the UV Conversation

The skin barrier has become one of the defining concepts in modern skincare because it influences how the skin responds to almost everything else. UV exposure, pollution, dehydration, exfoliation, and heat all interact with barrier function in ways that affect texture, sensitivity, and visible aging over time.

That growing focus on resilience has shaped a broader movement toward skincare systems designed for ongoing support rather than aggressive correction. Discussions around skin barrier health increasingly frame healthy skin as something maintained gradually through consistency rather than repaired suddenly through extreme intervention.

Several habits now appear repeatedly in routines built around long-term environmental protection:

  • Daily SPF use regardless of season
  • Antioxidant support during daytime routines
  • Consistent hydration maintenance
  • Barrier-supportive ingredients such as ceramides and peptides
  • Reduced over-exfoliation during warmer months
  • Simpler routines focused on long-term consistency

Those habits may seem less dramatic than highly corrective skincare trends, yet they often align more closely with how dermatologists describe sustainable skin maintenance over time.

The Wellness Industry Is Rethinking Prevention

The broader wellness and beauty industries are moving toward prevention-focused thinking in general. Luxury skincare conversations increasingly revolve around maintenance, resilience, and long-term skin function instead of immediate transformation alone.

That shift appears across editorial coverage discussing modern luxury skincare rituals, where routines are framed less as complicated self-optimisation and more as manageable daily support systems that fit naturally into contemporary lifestyles.

There is also a growing overlap between skincare awareness and broader public health conversations. Concerns around healthcare accessibility, preventative care, and long-term health planning have become increasingly visible across multiple sectors, including recent reporting on the wider US healthcare crisis.

Preventative skincare increasingly exists within that same cultural shift toward reducing cumulative damage before more intensive intervention becomes necessary.

The Future of Sun Protection Looks More Holistic

One of the biggest misconceptions around skincare is that UV protection begins and ends with sunscreen application. In reality, healthy skin tends to depend on a much broader network of habits working together consistently over time.

SPF remains essential, but conversations around UV exposure now increasingly include hydration, antioxidant defense, barrier resilience, inflammation management, and environmental recovery as part of the same equation. That broader perspective reflects a more realistic understanding of how skin actually changes across years of daily exposure rather than isolated moments in the sun.

The future of preventative skincare may ultimately become less about chasing perfect skin entirely and more about helping the skin remain stronger, calmer, and more resilient through the environments people move through every day.

5 ways to freshen up your daily skincare routine for summer

5 ways to freshen up your daily skincare routine for summer

Picture this: it’s 30 degrees in peak summer, you’re perpetually sweating and your handheld fan is working overtime, pushing out what can only be described as a warm whisper of air that isn’t touching the sides. Your arms are superglued to your body, your confidence is lost somewhere in a heat-induced haze, and you’ve chosen an outfit that highlights every sweat patch.

Fear not, friends, because surviving summer doesn’t require a total skincare overhaul – just a few strategic tweaks and some well-formulated products that do the heavy lifting. Intimate skincare brand Femfresh has carved out a niche in this space, with a range of dermatologist-tested products that deliver on everyday freshness.

Along with advice from consultant dermatologists Dr Ophelia Veraitch and Dr Aiza Jamil, we’ve rounded up the five ways to freshen up your routines for the season ahead.

Dress smart

Summer dressing starts with fabric choice. Dr Veraitch recommends “breathable, natural fabrics such as cotton” to help reduce moisture build-up, while Dr Jamil says to avoid tight synthetic materials as they can “increase irritation and folliculitis.” In short, your skin would quite like to stop marinating.

Wipes are your BFF

Let’s get one thing straight: sweating is a totally normal and healthy occurrence that means your body is regulating its own temperature to keep you cool. If, however, you find that your intimate area isn’t feeling quite as fresh as you’d like after some time in the sun, it might be worth slotting a pack of wipes into your bag. Femfresh’s biodegradable daily intimate wipes are formulated with 99% natural-origin ingredients to bring freshness to your vulva wherever you are. A quick one-two in the loo, and you’ll be good to go.

Cleansing is essential

One cleanse removes makeup. Two removes sweat, SPF and pollution build-up. During the summer, these can “clog pores and trigger breakouts,” says Dr Veraitch, which is why both dermatologists stress the importance of proper evening cleansing. Dr Veraitch recommends using AHA- or BHA-based cleansers, explaining that they deeply cleanse the skin and keep pores clear without harsh scrubbing.

Rethink your daily intimate routine

“The intimate area is naturally self-regulating, so less is often more,” says Dr Jamil, who recommends “gentle, pH-balanced cleansers designed specifically for intimate skin” and avoiding heavily fragranced products or aggressive exfoliation. In other words: your vulva does not need a 12-step routine or to smell like a tropical cocktail. Femfresh’s Daily Intimate Wash, enriched with aloe vera and calendula extracts, is pH and microbiome balanced, soap-free and made with 94% natural origin ingredients making it the perfect option for daily use during your shower.

Bye-bye chafing

Heat and friction can compromise the skin barrier, especially on the thighs, leading to irritation. Barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid should be your first port of call, as “they help reinforce the skin barrier, maintain hydration, and reduce transepidermal water loss,” says Dr Veraitch. Heatwave? Bring it on!

Why Mira Kapoor’s acupuncture beauty routine is going viral

Why Mira Kapoor’s acupuncture beauty routine is going viral

If you are looking for a non-invasive, holistic maintenance therapy to treat the early signs of aging or secure a temporary, natural glow, cosmetic acupuncture is highly effective. It’s a fantastic pre-event treatment.

However, professionals strongly advise managing your expectations. While it is a brilliant maintenance tool, it is not a miracle cure. It simply will not deliver the dramatic, structural alterations associated with dermal fillers, botox, or cosmetic surgery. Think of it as a high-intensity pilates class for your facial muscles—it will tone, lift, and refresh, but it isn’t going to change your fundamental bone structure.

From Kaolin clay to aloe vera, how to keep your skin sweat-free this summer Summer beauty is often a battle between looking fresh and surviving the heat. Humidity melts makeup, sunscreen feels heavy, and even the best skincare routines can collapse under relentless sweat and excess oil. But while no ingredient can completely stop the body’s natural cooling process, nature does offer surprisingly effective solutions for controlling shine, balancing sebum, and helping skin stay calm during hot weather. The key is not to fight sweat aggressively, but to support the skin in staying balanced, cool, and lightweight. For years, summer beauty trends focused on piling on powders and heavy mattifying products that often left skin looking flat, cakey, or dehydrated. Now, skincare experts and beauty enthusiasts are turning toward gentler, plant-based alternatives that absorb excess oil without suffocating the skin. From clay masks that act like natural oil magnets to centuries-old rice powders that softly blur shine, these ingredients create the kind of breathable beauty routine modern summer skin desperately needs.

Why summer skin produces more oil

When temperatures rise, the skin naturally produces more sweat and sebum. Sweat is the body’s cooling mechanism, while excess oil often develops as the skin tries to protect itself from heat-induced dehydration. Unfortunately, this combination can make pores appear larger, makeup slide off, and breakouts become more common.

This is why harsh cleansing or over-drying the skin during summer often backfires. When skin feels stripped, it compensates by producing even more oil. The smarter approach is to use ingredients that gently regulate oil production while keeping the skin hydrated and calm. That balance is what creates a naturally matte, healthy summer complexion instead of an artificially dry one.

Clay: Nature’s original oil controller

Among the most effective natural summer ingredients are kaolin and bentonite clay. These mineral-rich clays have been used in beauty rituals for centuries because of their remarkable ability to absorb excess oil and impurities from the skin.Kaolin clay is especially loved for sensitive or combination skin because it mattifies gently without causing irritation. Bentonite clay, on the other hand, offers deeper oil absorption and is particularly effective in humid weather when the skin feels persistently greasy. Both ingredients work almost like microscopic sponges, drawing out excess sebum before it can mix with sweat and break down makeup or sunscreen.

The appeal of clay during summer is not just cosmetic. By deeply cleansing pores, clay helps prevent congestion and heat-triggered breakouts that become common during warmer months. A lightweight clay mask once or twice a week can leave the skin feeling cleaner, smoother, and visibly less shiny for days afterward.

Witch hazel and green tea: Cooling astringents

Summer skincare works best when it focuses on cooling and calming the skin rather than aggressively drying it out. This is where witch hazel and green tea become particularly powerful.Witch hazel acts as a natural astringent, helping tighten the appearance of pores and remove excess oil from the surface of the skin. Unlike alcohol-heavy toners that can leave skin irritated, diluted witch hazel creates a refreshing matte effect while temporarily reducing oiliness. It is especially useful for people whose T-zones become excessively shiny during the day.Green tea extract offers a gentler approach. Rich in tannins and antioxidants, it helps regulate sebum production while simultaneously calming inflammation caused by heat, pollution, and sun exposure. Many skincare experts consider green tea one of the most versatile summer ingredients because it hydrates lightly while also controlling shine.Together, these ingredients create the kind of balanced skincare summer routines need — cooling enough to refresh the skin, but gentle enough to maintain the skin barrier.

Rice powder: Ancient secret to shine-free skin

Long before commercial setting powders existed, rice powder was used across Asia as a beauty staple for soft, matte skin. Finely milled rice powder or rice starch remains one of the most effective natural solutions for absorbing moisture without clogging pores.Unlike heavier cosmetic powders that can appear cakey in humid weather, rice powder creates a softer, more breathable finish. It absorbs sweat and oil while allowing the skin to retain a natural glow rather than looking overly matte. This is particularly important in modern beauty, where healthy-looking skin is preferred over completely flat complexions.Rice powder also has a uniquely lightweight feel, making it ideal for extremely hot climates where layered makeup becomes uncomfortable. A small dusting over the forehead, nose, and chin can keep skin looking fresh for hours without feeling heavy. Many beauty experts now recommend using rice or arrowroot powder over traditional talc-heavy formulas during summer because they work with the skin rather than masking it.

Dehydrated skin often becomes even oilier because it overcompensates by producing more sebum. This is why aloe vera remains one of the most valuable ingredients for hot weather beauty routines. Lightweight, soothing, and non-comedogenic, aloe vera hydrates the skin without adding heaviness.

Aloe Vera: Hydration without grease

One of the biggest misconceptions about oily summer skin is that it does not need hydration. In reality, dehydrated skin often becomes even oilier because it overcompensates by producing more sebum. This is why aloe vera remains one of the most valuable ingredients for hot weather beauty routines. Lightweight, soothing, and non-comedogenic, aloe vera hydrates the skin without adding heaviness. It also helps regulate skin temperature, making the face feel cooler and calmer in intense heat.Aloe vera is particularly useful after sun exposure or long hours outdoors because it reduces redness and prevents the skin from becoming inflamed. Instead of thick moisturisers that can feel suffocating in humid weather, aloe-based gels create breathable hydration that allows the skin to remain balanced. The ingredient also layers beautifully under sunscreen and makeup, which makes it an ideal base for minimal summer beauty routines.

The secret to sweat-proof skin is application

Even the best natural ingredients will not work effectively if they are layered incorrectly. Summer skincare is as much about texture and technique as it is about ingredients. One of the smartest ways to reduce shine is by starting with a lightweight mattifying sunscreen. Heavy sunscreens often mix with sweat and create greasiness throughout the day, whereas oil-free formulations sit more comfortably on the skin. Gel-based or mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide tend to perform especially well in humid climates because they protect the skin without creating a thick film.

Temperature control also matters more than people realize. Carrying a small mist of rose water or diluted witch hazel can instantly cool overheated skin during the day. Cooling the skin slightly reduces the urge to sweat excessively while refreshing makeup and preventing shine buildup.

Cooling the skin slightly reduces the urge to sweat excessively while refreshing makeup and preventing shine buildup.Layering is equally important. Instead of applying thick layers of makeup and powder all at once, modern summer beauty routines rely on lighter textures applied strategically. A touch of rice powder on the T-zone, a thin layer of aloe vera underneath sunscreen, and occasional cooling mists throughout the day create a far more natural, long-lasting result than heavy cosmetic layering.

Beauty that works with the skin, not against It

The shift toward natural summer beauty reflects a larger movement in skincare itself. People no longer want routines that completely suppress or mask the skin. Instead, they want products and ingredients that work with the body’s natural rhythms while helping the skin remain healthy and comfortable.Sweat-proof beauty today is less about perfection and more about balance. Healthy summer skin is allowed to glow, breathe, and respond naturally to heat without looking overwhelmed by oil or heavy makeup. Ingredients like clay, green tea, aloe vera, rice powder, and witch hazel succeed because they respect the skin’s biology instead of fighting it aggressively.
