Do you know: Tamarind is a skincare gem

Tamarind is a skincare gem

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African tamarind, a fruit native to West Africa, is becoming popular for its skin benefits.
Its rich vitamin C and antioxidant content makes it a great natural remedy for glowing skin.
From brightening complexion to fighting signs of aging, African tamarind can do it all.
Here’s how you can use this amazing fruit in your skincare routine.

Nutrient-rich composition

African tamarind is loaded with essential nutrients, such as vitamin C, calcium, and potassium.
Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental damage and promotes collagen production.
Calcium helps in maintaining the skin’s moisture levels, while potassium aids in keeping the skin cells healthy.
Together, these nutrients make a powerful combination for achieving glowing skin.

Natural exfoliant properties

The natural acids in African tamarind make it an excellent exfoliant.
These acids help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, resulting in smoother, brighter skin.
Using products with African tamarind regularly can help reduce the appearance of spots and uneven texture.
This makes it a great option for those looking for natural exfoliation methods.

Hydration booster for skin

African tamarind is also known for its hydrating properties. It helps retain moisture in the skin, preventing dryness and flakiness.
The hydrating effect of this fruit makes it suitable for all skin types, including those with sensitive or oily skin.
Incorporating African tamarind into your skincare routine can help maintain optimal hydration levels.

Anti-aging benefits of tamarind

The antioxidants present in African tamarind also help fight free radicals that cause premature aging.
By reducing fine lines and wrinkles over time, these antioxidants keep your skin looking youthful.
Regular use of products containing this fruit can improve elasticity and firmness, giving you a more youthful appearance without invasive procedures.

No soap, no facewash. Priyanka Chopra’s mother shares her one simple skincare routine for glowing skin and the actress follows it too. What is it?

No soap, no facewash. Priyanka Chopra’s mother shares her one simple skincare routine for glowing skin and the actress follows it too. What is it?

When everyone just talks about expensive skincare products and complicated routines, many still search for something simple and effective. From serums to cleansers, the choices can feel endless and confusing. But what if glowing skin didn’t require any of that? What if the secret was something basic, natural, and already available at home? Interestingly, a traditional remedy followed for years by Priyanka Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, proves that sometimes, less really is more.

The skincare secret revealed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ mother

Dr Madhu Chopra, mother of Priyanka Chopra, recently shared her go-to skincare routine, and it’s surprisingly simple. Taking to her social media handle, she revealed that she has never relied on soap or facewash for her skin. Instead, she uses a traditional homemade ubtan, a natural face pack made with everyday kitchen ingredients.
She explained that this routine has helped her maintain clear and healthy skin over the years, keeping issues like acne, pimples, and pigmentation at bay. What makes it even more interesting is that Priyanka Chopra also follows the same skincare ritual.

What goes into the face pack?

The base of this DIY face pack is gram flour (besan) and turmeric (haldi), both widely known for their skin-friendly properties. Besan works as a gentle cleanser, while turmeric helps soothe the skin and reduce inflammation.

To make the pack suitable for dry skin, Dr Madhu adds ingredients like fresh cream (malai), yoghurt, and a bit of cold milk. These elements help moisturise the skin and prevent dryness. Turmeric, considered the key ingredient, plays a major role in fighting infections, reducing acne, and giving the skin a natural glow.

How to use it properly

The preparation of the face pack is simple and quick. All the ingredients are mixed into a smooth paste and applied evenly on the face, just like a mask. It is then left on the skin for about 15 to 20 minutes before being washed off with water. Dr Madhu also advises being careful while applying the pack, especially around the eyes. She cautions that the under-eye area is delicate and should be left untouched to avoid irritation.
Alternatives for sensitive skin
While the face pack works well for many, Dr Madhu also suggests alternatives for those with sensitive skin or allergies. For instance, if gram flour doesn’t suit someone, wheat flour can be used instead. Similarly, if turmeric causes irritation, lemon juice can be added as a substitute, as it is rich in vitamin C. For those who cannot use dairy products like cream or yoghurt, natural options such as grated tomato or potato juice can be included in the mixture. These ingredients are known to improve skin texture and provide additional nourishment.
According to Dr Madhu Chopra, the secret to achieving good results lies in regular use. She recommends applying the face pack frequently, even daily, for visible improvement in skin texture and glow. Over time, this consistent routine can help restore the skin’s natural radiance without relying on chemical-based products. Her approach highlights a larger idea: skincare doesn’t always have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes, traditional remedies passed down through generations can be just as effective, if not more. With both Dr Madhu Chopra and Priyanka Chopra trusting this simple routine, it also kind of shows that glowing skin might just be a few natural ingredients away.

The New ‘Longevity’ Peptide Creams That Are Replacing Traditional Anti-Aging Moisturizers

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

If you’ve been paying attention to skincare lately, you may have noticed a subtle shift in how we talk about aging. It’s less about quick fixes and more about long-term goals—supporting the skin so it functions better over time rather than trying to reverse changes overnight. And at the center of that shift is one ingredient category that keeps coming up: peptides.

Unlike more aggressive anti-aging ingredients that focus on exfoliating or speeding up cell turnover, peptide creams take a more supportive approach. They’re designed to help skin maintain its structure, reinforce the barrier and gradually improve firmness and elasticity with consistent use. The appeal is obvious, especially for anyone who has found traditional actives like retinoids too irritating or difficult to stick with long term.

That’s why dermatologists are increasingly recommending peptide-based moisturizers as a foundational step—not just an add-on. They’re easy to layer, generally well tolerated across skin types and work in the background to support collagen production and overall skin health. The result isn’t a dramatic overnight change, but something more sustainable: smoother texture, better hydration and skin that simply looks more resilient over time.

So, are peptide creams actually worth the hype? And how do you know which ones to try? Ahead, dermatologists break down what peptides really do, how to use them and the nine best peptide cream formulas to consider right now.

What Are Peptides?

At their most basic, peptides act as the basic ingredients for your body to build proteins like collagen and elastin.

“Peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins such as collagen and elastin, which give skin its structure, firmness and elasticity,” explains Dr. Hallie McDonald, MD, FAAD, co-founder of ERLY Skincare. “In skincare, peptides act as signaling molecules that help communicate with skin cells, encouraging processes like collagen production, repair and barrier reinforcement.”

Because peptides are smaller than full proteins, they’re able to penetrate the skin more effectively, making them particularly useful in topical formulas.

Dr. Tiffany J. Libby, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, adds that peptides work by essentially telling your skin what to do next.

“They signal to your cells to produce more collagen and other complex molecules that help support the skin’s structure,” she says.

Do Peptide Creams Actually Work?

Short answer: yes—but they work differently than more aggressive anti-aging ingredients.

“Peptide creams absolutely have a role in an effective skincare routine, particularly for those looking for a gentle, consistent approach to anti-aging,” says Dr. McDonald. “Well-formulated peptide products can support collagen production, improve hydration and help soften the appearance of fine lines over time.”

The keyword here is “consistency.” Unlike exfoliating acids or retinol—which can produce faster visible changes—peptides tend to deliver more gradual results. But for many people, that’s part of the appeal.

“They provide many of the same supportive benefits for skin quality and firmness without the common side effects,” she adds, which makes them especially useful for those with sensitive skin or anyone who struggles with irritation from stronger actives.

Top Peptide Creams

What Peptides Are Best for Anti-Aging?

Not all peptides work the same way, and understanding the differences can help you choose a more effective product.

“Signal peptides, such as palmitoyl pentapeptide and tripeptide-1, help stimulate collagen and elastin production,” Dr. McDonald states. “Carrier peptides, including copper peptides, support repair processes, while neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides can help soften the appearance of expression lines.”

From a dermatology standpoint, signal peptides and copper peptides tend to have the strongest track record for improving firmness and smoothing fine lines over time. Dr. Libby also notes that collagen-supporting peptides become more important as we age, since natural levels decline. That’s why incorporating them into a daily routine can help support the skin’s structure more consistently.

Can You Layer Peptide Creams With Other Products?

One of the biggest advantages of peptides is how easy they are to use and combine with other products.

“Peptides are highly versatile and generally layer well with most skincare ingredients,” says Dr. McDonald. They pair particularly well with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and barrier-supporting ingredients like niacinamide.

They can even be used with other anti-aging products.

“Using peptides alongside retinoids can be beneficial, as peptides help support the skin barrier and may reduce irritation,” she explains.

In other words, peptide creams don’t require you to overhaul your routine—they slot in easily, whether you’re keeping things simple or using more active treatments.

9 Best Peptide Creams, Tested by Dermatologists

Best Overall: Alastin Restorative Skin Complex, $258

Shop It at Alastin

If dermatologists had to pick one peptide product they consistently come back to, this is often it. According to Dr. McDonald, the formula leans heavily on a blend of signal peptides designed to support collagen and elastin production, which is what gives skin that “firmer, more resilient look over time.” It’s the kind of product that doesn’t necessarily feel flashy when you first apply it, but with consistent use, skin starts to look smoother and more even.

Best for Sensitive Skin: ERLY Night Moisturizer with Peptides, $42

Shop It at Erly

If your skin doesn’t tolerate stronger active ingredients well, this is a much easier entry point into anti-aging.

“It’s fragrance-free and designed with a barrier-first approach, so you’re getting the benefits of peptides without the dryness or irritation that can come with ingredients like retinol,” says Dr. McDonald.

Think of it as a steady, low-effort way to support skin overnight—hydrating, calming and quietly improving texture over time.

Best With SPF: Naked Sundays BeautyScreen Peptide Foundation Tint SPF 50, $38

Shop It at Ulta

This is one of those formulas that makes your morning routine feel more streamlined. It combines peptides with a subtle tint and mineral SPF, so you’re supporting collagen while also protecting it—which is arguably just as important. The texture is lightweight enough to wear daily, and it provides the perfect amount of natural coverage, making it a practical option if you’re trying to simplify your routine without skipping key steps.

Best for Dry Skin: Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream, $68

Shop It at Sephora

This cream has built a following for a reason. It delivers a mix of peptides, amino acids and hydrating ingredients in a texture that feels rich without being heavy or greasy. If your skin tends to feel tight or depleted, it gives that immediate cushiony softness, but it also works over time to improve elasticity and smoothness, which is where peptides really come into play.

Related: How To Get ‘Cloud Skin’ at Any Age, According to a Celebrity Esthetician

Best for Mature Skin: Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, $38

Shop It on Amazon

There’s a reason this one keeps showing up in dermatologist offices. This drugstore pick pairs peptides with deeply hydrating ingredients to help improve firmness and soften the look of fine lines, especially in areas where skin tends to thin over time. It’s a bit richer in texture, which makes it particularly well-suited for mature skin that needs both moisture and structural support.

Best for Oily Skin: Paula’s Choice Peptide Booster, $55

Shop It on Amazon

If you tend to avoid heavier creams, this is a more flexible option. The formula is lightweight and designed to be mixed into your existing moisturizer or serum, so you can get the benefits of peptides without adding another heavy layer. It’s especially useful for oily or combination skin types that still want anti-aging support without compromising texture.

Best for Firming: SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum, $295

Shop It on Amazon

This is one of the more advanced options in the category, combining peptides with growth factors for a more intensive approach to firming.

“The growth factors and peptides help support the dermal extracellular matrix,” says Dr. Libby.

She often recommends it for skin that’s starting to show more noticeable loss of elasticity, since it works on multiple levels—supporting collagen while also improving overall skin texture. It’s an investment, but one that’s frequently backed by in-office recommendations.

Best Budget: The Inkey List Peptide Moisturizer, $18

Shop It at Sephora

If you want to try peptides without spending much, this is an easy entry point. The lightweight formula uses a dual-peptide blend to support collagen and smooth fine lines over time, while still functioning as a simple, everyday moisturizer. The texture is straightforward and no-frills, but that’s part of the appeal—it does exactly what you need it to without overcomplicating things.

Best Luxury: Augustinus Bader The Cream, $99+

Shop It at Augustinus Bader

This formula is built around a peptide-rich complex designed to support skin renewal and improve overall skin quality, rather than targeting just one concern. Over time, it makes skin look more even, hydrated and generally healthier, which is why it’s become such a staple in high-end routines.

A Balanced Guide to Organic Self-Tanners

A Balanced Guide to Organic Self-Tanners

When it comes to dressing up, I am generally of the opinion that we should choose clothing that complements our skin tone.

The key word though is complement, not match.

Which brings me to graduation season.

This spring, my daughter is graduating not once but twice – first with her associate’s degree, then from high school – and that’s how I learned that graduation dresses are almost always white.

My legs are also pasty white, as are the legs of Miss High School Valedictorian, Class of 1.

The Usual Advice (And Why I Question It)

In most reviews, this is the part where someone says that we all need to avoid UV rays for our health, and the best way to achieve a healthy, sun-kissed glow is to use self-tanner.

However, there’s a growing body of research that suggests there’s a “sweet spot” for sun exposure. Too much can be harmful – but according to respected researchers including Dutch dermatologist Han J. van der Rhee – so can too little. (1)

That’s why, especially in the summer, my family makes it a goal to get sunshine every day. Now, don’t come for me – we do use sunscreen and other strategies like covering up and/or finding shade to avoid overexposure. This article is not about that, though – this one is, if you’re interested.

Now back to the special occasion situation. My daughter found a white dress that’s perfect for senior photos and graduation, and she wanted a safe sunless tanning option, so I decided now is the time to dive deep into the research on what’s available.

What I Found

Over the past couple of years, I’ve seen a lot of ads for organic self-tanners and wondered if they’re truly non-toxic and as good as reviewers say.

The short answer is that there are versions with truly non-toxic ingredients, but the actual biological impact varies depending on when (and possibly how) they’re applied.

The long answer starts with something you’ll see on almost every sunless tanner label – dihydroxyacetone.

Meet DHA, The Active Ingredient

If you’ve looked into self-tanners at all, you’ve probably come across DHA (dihydroxyacetone). It’s the most common active ingredient used to achieve a bronze glow.

DHA is a sugar molecule that reacts with amino acids on your skin’s surface to produce melanoidins, which are brown-pigmented molecules that mimic the look of a natural tan. (2) This surface-level bronzing effect essentially “stains” the top layer of skin.

Some DHA is synthetic, but the form found in organic and natural products is derived from non-GMO sugar beets or sugarcane. It’s generally considered safe for topical use, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in self-tanning lotions.

However, there are a few nuances that don’t get talked about very often.

#1: Sunless Tanning May Reduce Vitamin D Production

Melanoidins might sound similar to melanin, but they’re functionally different.

Melanin formation happens when skin absorbs UV light – it’s a responsive biological process.

Melanoidin is formed when sugars and amino acids combine through the Maillard reaction – the same process that creates a browning effect on toast and roasted potatoes. According to one pilot study, when DHA creates a layer of melanoidins on the skin, it acts as a mild natural sunscreen that can reduce UVB penetration enough to decrease vitamin D production by an average of 24%. (3) (4)

Now, this was a small study, so we need more research to confirm and clarify the details.

However, since more than half of the U.S. adult population already has insufficient levels of vitamin D, I would personally keep an eye on my levels if I was using sunless tanning products on a consistent basis. (5)

For special occasions, when the effect will wear off after about a week, I’m 0% worried about vitamin D. However, I will be following an unofficial 24 hour rule, which leads me to an important caveat:

#2: Sunless Tanning & Sunlight Exposure

If you’re planning to apply sunless tanner before heading to the beach, you might want to do it a couple of days in advance.

Here’s why: Some studies have found that DHA-treated skin may temporarily produce more free radicals when exposed to UV light. (6) The window is estimated to be about 24 hours. (7)

Now, maybe you’re wondering whether erythrulose – a DHA alternative derived from fermented raspberries – has the same impact. The answer is . . probably. We don’t have any research on it specifically, but it works the same way that DHA does – via melanoidins and the Maillard reaction. It’s reasonable to presume that it also temporarily reduces UV tolerance, at least until we have more data.

So what does this mean in practical terms? Many experts recommend applying sunless tanner at night, allowing it to set, and using sunscreen the next day.

This is when thoughtful formulation matters – not just the active ingredient. Many brands now intentionally add antioxidant-rich ingredients to their products to help reduce and/or neutralize free radicals. (8)

#3: A Note On Spray Tans

While lotions and creams are applied topically, spray tans can introduce DHA into areas it wasn’t designed for, like the lungs or mucous membranes.

The FDA has specifically noted that DHA is not approved for inhalation, which is why protective measures (like nose plugs and eye protection) are often recommended during spray applications. I personally think this is more of a concern with commercial spray tans – which use an aerosolized mist with very fine droplets – not at home spray products in pump bottles that release larger droplets.

I personally wouldn’t take a deep breath while spraying my face, though. 🙂

What “Organic” Means (and Doesn’t Mean) in Self-Tanners

Now that we’ve talked about active ingredient, DHA, let’s talk about what else is in the bottle.

For a product to be “certified organic,” it usually needs to contain a very high percentage of organic ingredients.

Some self-tanners meet that standard. Others combine organic ingredients with naturally derived, plant-based components that aren’t certified but improve the formula (like vanilla fruit extract for scent).

Either way, the goal is the same: to create nourishing, skin-friendly blends that don’t include problematic ingredients like:

Parabens
These artificial preservatives can mimic estrogen in the body and have been linked to hormone imbalances, reproductive problems, developmental problems, and other health issues. They also cause significant ecological disruption by acting as endocrine disruptors in wildlife, especially aquatic life, where they cause reproductive and/or developmental problems. (9)

Fragrance (a.k.a. parfum)
Thanks to a loophole in U.S. labeling rules, companies can hide undisclosed chemicals under the catch-all term “fragrance.”

Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
In personal care products, formaldehyde can be added to products to extend their shelf life. But if you’re like me, you’d immediately put back any product that listed formaldehyde on the label. Companies know that, which is why they use formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.

Yep, ingredients like sodium hydroxymethylglycinate don’t contain formaldehyde outright – but they slowly release small amounts over time as they break down. There’s no formaldehyde on the label, but exposure is still happening, and according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics even low levels – around 250 parts per million (ppm) or even 200 ppm in sensitized individuals – are cause for concern. (10)

Artificial Dyes
Many self-tanners use added colorants to create an instant “bronzed” look before the active ingredient develops.

These dyes are often petroleum-derived and can trigger redness, itching, or sensitivity.

Common examples include:

  • FD&C Red 40
  • FD&C Yellow 5
  • FD&C Blue 1
  • Coal tar–derived colorants

What I’d Want My Daughter to Know

That was a lot . . . probably more than you were looking for!

Here’s why: when my mom, sister, or daughter asks me for a recommendation, I want them to have the important details before deciding what works best for them. I want the same for you, too.

With all of that in mind, here’s what I’d say to my daughter about sunless tanners (actually, it’s what I did say):

  • They’re great for special occasions.
  • Apply them at night, then avoid heavy sun exposure the next day. Use sunscreen if you’re going to be outside.
  • Pay attention to the overall formulation, not just the active ingredient. I’d look for products that intentionally include antioxidants.
  • If you start using self-tanner often, it may be worth keeping an eye on your vitamin D levels.

My Top 3 Picks for Organic Self-Tanners

Navigating the “natural” beauty landscape can be overwhelming. Many brands greenwash, and there are so many to sift through it can be difficult to even know where to start.

To narrow down my list, I looked for:

  • High Percentage of Organic/Natural Ingredients: Obviously. Antioxidant-rich formulas were also a high priority.
  • Absence of “Red Flag” Ingredients: No parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, etc.
  • Performance: The goal is sun-kissed, not orange.
  • Streak-Free Application: Nobody wants zebra stripes.
  • Positive Reviews: Does it consistently perform well for real users?

I ended up ruling out several popular “clean” self-tanners that rely on frequent reapplication or ingredient bases I wasn’t comfortable with. The ones below are the few that met my criteria for both formulation and real-world performance.

🥇 Beauty by Earth Self Tanner Body Lotion

Best overall balance of pure ingredients + performance

This body lotion is a crowd favorite for good reason. It gives skin a natural-looking glow without veering orange, and is versatile enough to be used on the face as well as the body. Beauty By Earth does make a separate face lotion for sensitive, dry, or breakout-prone skin, but to keep things simple I just used the body lotion and it worked well for me.

The organic aloe and shea butter base leaves skin feeling soft and supple – not dry – and the formula also includes antioxidants like green tea extract, pomegranate extract, and witch hazel extract.

It’s user-friendly, making it a great option for people (like me) who don’t use it enough to have expert-level applications skills. The scent is subtle and pleasant.

Why it stands out:

  • Simple ingredients
  • Good color (not orange-heavy)
  • Consistently strong user feedback
  • Pregnancy safe

Key Ingredients

  • Organic Aloe Vera: Hydrates and soothes.
  • Organic Shea Butter: Deeply moisturizes and improves skin elasticity.
  • Organic Coconut Oil: Nourishes and provides a lovely scent.
  • DHA from sugar beets: The bronzing ingredient.
  • Antioxidants: Green tea extract, pomegranate extract, and witch hazel extract.

🥈 Chocolate Sun Tanning Cream (Face & Body)

Chocolate Sun uses a moisturizing base of organic aloe, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and other skin-conditioning botanicals to support hydration while the color develops.

What I like most about it is that it doesn’t rely on repeated applications to work. You’ll typically start to see color within a few hours, with a deeper, natural-looking tan developing over time – making it a great option for occasional use rather than something you have to maintain throughout the week.

The texture is easy to work with, which makes application very forgiving (especially if you’re not using self-tanner regularly).

Why it stands out:

  • 89% Organic Ingredients
  • Designed to work well with a single application
  • Simple, botanical-focused formula
  • Good color
  • Hydrating base that supports skin during development

Key Ingredients

  • Aloe Vera: Hydrates and supports skin barrier
  • Coconut Oil: Nourishes and helps with even application
  • Jojoba Oil: Mimics skin’s natural oils for a balanced feel.
  • Sweet Almond & Sunflower Oil: Lighter oils for absorption
  • DHA (naturally derived): Active tanning ingredient
  • Antioxidant: Green Tea Leaf Extract

🥉Eco Tan Invisible Tan Cream

Best certified organic option

This brand is certified organic in Australia, where it was founded along the Gold Coast by Sonya Driver. I haven’t personally tried their highly rated Invisible Tan cream because it’s currently out of stock in many places.

However, it’s consistently one of the highest-rated options in the natural beauty space, and reviewers say it’s rich, glides on smoothly, and develops into a beautiful, natural-looking bronze overnight.

From a formulation standpoint, it checks a lot of boxes: certified organic ingredients, a nourishing base (including aloe and plant oils), and a focus on antioxidants.

They do offer other products as well, like Hempitan, but reviews are more mixed. I’m waiting for the Invisible Tan Cream to come back in stock, then I will test it out and report back.

Why it stands out:

  • Certified organic (In Australia)
  • Good mid-tone color

Key Ingredients

  • Organic Aloe Vera: Soothes and hydrates the skin.
  • Macadamia Seed Oil: High in fatty acids that are highly moisturising, and work to regenerate and soften the skin.
  • Organic Avocado Oil: Rich in vitamin E, deeply moisturizing.
  • Antioxidants: Elderberry extract, geranium oil, chamomile extract
  • DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) derived from natural sugar beet: The active bronzing agent.

How to Get the Best Results (Without Overcomplicating Things)

You don’t need a 15-step routine to get a good result, but a few small things make a big difference.

Start with smooth skin
Exfoliating ahead of time helps the color go on evenly and fade more naturally. A natural-fiber mitt (made with loofah, hemp or sisal) works well for this.

Moisturize dry areas first
Elbows, knees, ankles, and hands tend to grab more color. A light layer of moisturizer in those spots helps keep things even.

Apply like you would a body lotion
Work in sections and blend well. You don’t need perfect technique – just take your time and don’t rush it.

About mitts and brushes
Most brands recommend using an application mitt or kabuki brush for the smoothest finish. As far as I can tell, those are almost always made with synthetic fibers, which isn’t ideal from a microplastics standpoint.

That said, for occasional use, I think it’s a reasonable tradeoff if it helps you avoid streaks. If you’d rather skip it, applying with clean hands and washing thoroughly afterward works just fine.

Give it time to develop
I prefer applying at night and letting it develop while I sleep. It’s simpler, and it lines up with the earlier point about avoiding sun exposure right after application.

Skincare Ingredients Dermatologists Recommend

Skincare Ingredients Dermatologists Recommend

If you’re dealing with acne, dermatologists recommend focusing on ingredients that target oil production, clogged pores, and inflammation rather than layering multiple trendy products that may irritate your skin.

“For acne-prone skin, ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and prescription-strength retinoids are highly effective, as they target clogged pores, inflammation, and excess oil production,” says Whitney Hovenic. “Niacinamide can also be helpful for regulating oil and calming inflammation, while topical alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) can support gentle exfoliation.”

However, more isn’t always better, especially when it comes to acne treatments. “It’s important to avoid formulas with high concentrations, as this can lead to irritation and potentially worsen breakouts,” Hovenic adds. The key, she explains, is choosing a few effective ingredients and introducing them gradually to avoid overwhelming your skin.

Best for:

  • Acne-prone skin
  • Oily skin
  • Clogged pores
  • Inflammation

How to get out of Fight or Flight

How to Get Out of Fight or Flight

For years I exercised daily, did plenty of cardio, and restricted my calories to the point I was way undereating. Yet the stubborn weight still held on, my thyroid wasn’t functioning well, and my lab numbers weren’t where I wanted them. If you’d told me then that the answer wasn’t a stricter diet or more supplements, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Looking back, I realized that my body was in fight or flight mode for over a decade. I had to step back and ask the hard questions. Not “how do I force my body to listen,” but “how can I learn how to listen to my body”? Here’s how to get out of fight or flight and a deep dive from my personal experience.

I learned through trial and error how the nervous system drives healing, and the simple, foundational ways we can begin sending safety signals to the body again.

Why Fight or Flight Keeps Us Stuck

One of the most helpful reframes for me was understanding that my body isn’t broken, it’s protective. What we often call fight or flight is simply the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, a built-in response designed to keep us alive. Our body sends us messages, sometimes not so subtly. I’ve found from personal experience that when we don’t listen to the whispers our body is giving, they can turn into shouts.

When the sympathetic system is activated, the body shifts priorities. Digestion slows down, detox becomes less efficient, hormone production changes, and inflammation increases. Sleep is often disrupted, and processes like reproduction and long-term repair are deprioritized. From a survival standpoint, this is incredibly intelligent. If the body believes it’s in danger, it will focus on immediate survival rather than long-term healing.

The challenge is that many of us live in a chronic, low-grade version of this state. Not because of immediate physical danger, but because of constant inputs like blood sugar fluctuations, artificial light at night, environmental toxins, emotional stress, overstimulation, and even undernourishment. Even if we don’t consciously feel stressed, the body can still perceive danger.

This realization changed everything for me. You cannot force the body to heal from a place of stress. You don’t heal your way into safety. Once you create the safety signals, healing follows.

The Nervous System as the Gatekeeper of Healing

At the center of this is the nervous system, which sets the conditions for what the body is willing to do at any given time. A key player is the limbic system, which constantly scans for safety or danger, often faster than conscious thought. This means the body can react before we’re even aware of it.

For me, this explained why I could do so many things “right” physically and still not feel better. I had cleaned up my diet, taken targeted supplements, and run labs, yet my body was still stuck. It wasn’t until I addressed the nervous system layer that those efforts began to work.

Symptoms are not random or meaningless, but communication. When the body is stuck in fight or flight, it’s essentially saying that it doesn’t feel safe enough to prioritize healing. That message can show up in many forms, including anxiety, sleep issues, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, burnout, or weight that won’t shift despite dietary changes.

Understanding this shifted my focus away from overriding symptoms and toward listening to them.

Emotional and Mental Safety Signals

When people think about stress, they often think of mental or emotional stress. While that’s only part of the picture, it’s still a powerful influence on the nervous system.

Unresolved emotional patterns can keep the body in a constant state of alertness. In my own experience, chronic stress, overwhelm, and patterns that had been in place for years all played a role. I tried many different approaches, including therapy modalities like Internal Family Systems, EMDR, hypnosis, and traditional talk therapy. Some were helpful, some were not (like talk therapy), but none were a complete solution on their own.

What made the biggest difference was the consistent, daily work of gently retraining my nervous system responses. Over time, the small changes compounded into big results.

Putting It Into Practice

There are also certain experiences that signal safety to the brain. Feeling seen and understood, having supportive relationships, and maintaining healthy boundaries all play a role. Slower mornings and evenings, predictable routines, and reducing multitasking can also help the body feel more regulated. Even things like play, joy, and pleasure are not optional extras. They’re biological signals that the body is safe.

There are simple ways to begin shifting the nervous system in this direction. Breathwork is one of the easiest places to start. Something as simple as extending the exhale longer than the inhale can begin to calm the body. The physiological sigh, which involves a deep inhale, a second short inhale, and then a long exhale, is another tool that mimics a natural calming response we see in babies and young children.

Practices that stimulate the vagus nerve, such as humming, singing, or even gargling, can also support a more relaxed state. Journaling and gratitude practices can shift mental and emotional patterns over time. Gentle movement and time in nature help regulate the body in a more physical way.

For me, the key wasn’t doing any of these perfectly. It was showing up consistently and allowing the nervous system to gradually learn a new baseline.

Safety Signals and What the Body Needs

One of the most important shifts I had to make was realizing that safety isn’t just emotional. It’s also physical and biochemical. The body is constantly interpreting signals from its environment, and certain inputs can either reinforce a sense of safety or reinforce stress.

Light is one of the most powerful signals. Morning sunlight especially plays a critical role in regulating circadian rhythms. These rhythms in turn influence cortisol timing, energy levels, and sleep quality. During my healing phase, I made it a point to get outside at sunrise each day and to take short breaks throughout the day to get natural light. Now, it’s become a daily habit I can’t live without.

Just as important is reducing artificial light at night. Exposure to blue light after sunset can suppress melatonin production, which is not only important for sleep but also for repair and recovery. When melatonin is disrupted, it affects far more than just how quickly we fall asleep.

Minerals and nutrients are another foundational piece. The body interprets adequate nourishment as a sign of safety. Minerals like magnesium support relaxation, sleep, and hundreds of biochemical processes. Sodium and potassium help regulate fluid balance and cellular communication. When the body is low in these essential nutrients, it can interpret that deficiency as a stress signal.

This was a major shift for me. Instead of focusing on restriction or perfect macros, I began asking how I could maximize nourishment in each meal. Prioritizing protein, healthy fats, and nutrient-dense foods helped signal to my body that it had the resources it needed to repair and rebuild.

Sleep is another critical safety signal. During deep sleep, the body reduces inflammation, repairs tissues, regulates hormones, and clears waste from the brain. When sleep is consistently disrupted, the body remains in a state of alertness. Prioritizing sleep became one of the most impactful changes I made, even when it wasn’t perfect.

Reducing Environmental Stressors

Another layer that often goes overlooked is the role of the environment. The body is constantly processing inputs from the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the products we use.

Things like synthetic fragrances, mold, poor air quality, and chemical exposures can all act as subtle stressors. Even if we don’t consciously notice them, the body does.

The goal isn’t to create a perfect environment (which we can’t do anyway!). Instead, it’s about reducing the overall load. Simple changes like opening windows for fresh air, using an air filter, using a good water filter, and minimizing synthetic products can make a meaningful difference over time.

One important concept that changed my approach was understanding that detox isn’t something we force. It’s something the body does when it feels safe and supported. Trying to push detox pathways while the body is already stressed can create more problems rather than solving them.

Daily Rhythms That Support a Calm Nervous System

The small rhythms of daily life have a surprisingly large impact on the nervous system. The body thrives on predictability, and chaos is often interpreted as stress. Easier said than done as a mom, but it’s about making progress, not doing things perfectly.

Creating a slower start to the day, with natural light before screens, helps set the tone for a more regulated nervous system. Eating a nourishing meal before caffeine helps stabilize blood sugar and energy levels. Taking short movement breaks throughout the day, even just a brief walk, supports circulation, lymphatic flow, and mental clarity.

Walking, in particular, became one of the simplest and most effective tools I used. It doesn’t require special equipment or intense effort, yet it supports multiple systems in the body at once.

Consistent routines, especially in the evening, can also signal to the body that it’s safe to wind down. Over time, these patterns help retrain the nervous system to expect periods of rest and recovery.

Another piece that’s often overlooked is the role of enjoyment. Moments of pleasure, creativity, or connection aren’t just nice to have. They actively shift the body out of a stress response and into a healing state.

The Connection Between Stress and Hormones

One of the most fascinating aspects of this journey was realizing how closely hormones follow the nervous system. When the body feels safe, hormone production starts to move toward balance. When it feels stressed, hormones shift accordingly.

This can show up in many ways, including irregular cycles, increased PMS symptoms, thyroid imbalances, and changes in mood, energy, and sleep. In my own experience, addressing nervous system safety was a missing piece that allowed other hormone-supporting strategies to finally work.

Even during natural transitions like perimenopause, increasing safety signals can make a noticeable difference. Many women experience improvements in sleep, mood, energy, and overall stability when the nervous system is supported.

It Starts With a Single Step

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that getting out of fight or flight isn’t about doing everything at once. In fact, trying to overhaul everything can create more stress.

Instead, it’s about consistently sending small, meaningful safety signals. This might look like getting outside for a few minutes in the morning, eating a more nourishing breakfast, or taking short breaks to move and breathe throughout the day.

Over time, these small actions add up. They help the nervous system shift from a constant state of alertness to one where healing becomes possible again. Some of the biggest needle movers for me have been getting morning sunlight, enough protein and minerals, and winding down at night.

Final Thoughts on How to Get Out of Fight or Flight

Looking back, I can see that for years I was trying to build health on top of a stressed foundation. It wasn’t that the tools I was using were wrong. My body just wasn’t in a place where it could fully benefit from them.

When I shifted my focus to creating safety, physically, emotionally, and environmentally, everything else began to fall into place. Healing no longer felt forced, but felt supported.

If you feel stuck or like nothing is working, it may be worth asking where your body might not feel safe yet. It might need more rest, more nourishment, more light, or simply a slower pace. The body knows how to heal; we just have to get out of the way sometimes and let it.

What are some ways you’ve found to help send safety signals to your body? Anything I missed? Leave a comment and let us know!

The Best Summer Skincare Routine For Oily Skin, According To Three Derms

The Best Summer Skincare Routine For Oily Skin, According To Three Derms

Curating a skincare routine for oily skin can feel like a year-round challenge – but throw warmer weather into the equation, and it becomes even trickier. As temperatures rise, it’s easy to assume that a summer skincare routine should follow a less-is-more approach to prevent everything melting away in a mix of sweat, sebum and shine. But is that really the case? Not exactly. To set the record straight, we turned to the experts: consultant dermatologists Dr Derrick Phillips and Dr Alexis Granite, along with cosmetic doctor Dr Sonia Khorana.

The expert-approved top products for summer skincare at a glance:

“In warmer weather, oily skin often becomes more noticeable,” explains Dr Phillips. “Heat and humidity can increase sebaceous gland activity, leading to excess shine, more visible pores, and a higher likelihood of breakouts. When sebum mixes with sweat, SPF and daily build-up on the skin, it can contribute to congestion and acne in those who are blemish-prone.”

According to the pros, it’s a five-step ritual to control build-up and shine without stripping the skin. Dr Granite says, “Those who suffer from oily skin will often reach for drying formulas to combat excess sebum. The issue is that if the skin is over-dried, it will actually compensate by producing more oil, so a balance is key.”

This, according to Dr Phillips, starts with the right cleanser. “Cleansing becomes particularly important, but it needs to be balanced,” he stresses. “A gentle foaming cleanser can help remove excess oil, sweat and impurities without disrupting the skin barrier.” However, caution is advised. “It’s also important to resist the temptation to over-cleanse, as this can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to increased oil production as the skin tries to compensate.”

BTS' V Proves Less Is More—His Minimal Skincare Routine Is Breaking the Internet!

BTS’ V Proves Less Is More—His Minimal Skincare Routine Is Breaking the Internet!

For most people, the glowing, flawless skin of celebrities often feels like something unattainable. In K-pop, BTS are especially known for their consistently radiant appearance, whether on stage or on screen. What makes it even more striking is that despite their packed schedules, constant travel, performances and frequent makeup, their skin still looks smooth, healthy and well cared for. Now, isn’t that something to die for?

Well, if you wish to achieve the goal of a flawless glowing skin exactly like the BTS boys hand on. We are here with all the inside secrets of the Bangtan Boys.

When it comes to BTS, keeping the fans’ choices in mind, V aka Taehyung is undoubtedly one of the most handsome boys in the group and when it comes to his skincare regime, he is very particular about maintaining gorgeous skin.

On various occasions, Taehyung has been quite vocal about having breakouts and didn’t shy away from talking about them. So, you must be wondering how he maintains such bright glowing skin, despite his acne-prone skin! Good news, we know his secret skincare tip and here you go.

Just as he gives his all during performances, the “Christmas Tree” singer puts equal effort into caring for his skin offstage. A key part of his routine is proper cleansing, which he considers essential. He often opts for a foaming cleanser but has also stressed the importance of choosing a gentle, nourishing formula suited to one’s skin type. According to him, cleansing at least twice a day helps keep the skin clear, balanced and free from blemishes.

Next, V uses a toner that serves as a second cleanse to take off any remnants of makeup from the skin. And the BTS boy is very particular about this as well. Earlier he had shared that his dermatologist suggested using a cotton pad instead of his fingers for the toner and he follows it dedicatedly. V had also asked his fans not to be aggressive on skin, rather to be gentle to cleanse areas that have a higher chance of having leftover makeup, like under eyes.

Following this, the BTS member uses a hydrating and nourishing face moisturiser to give himself a good facial massage that helps in proper blood circulation and ensures the softness in the skin. V also makes sure to moisturize his ears when he applies the moisturiser, which is usually missed by commoners. He also applies an extra dollop of cream before going to bed to keep his skin hydrated overnight. As per his skin care regime, he also takes proper care of his hands and uses hand cream to massage the gaps between his fingers and applies it on to his cuticles.

After finishing the rest of his routine, V makes sure to take care of his lips as well by applying a generous layer of lip balm to keep them soft and hydrated. He has even shared his own tip for application—dabbing a small amount onto a finger and spreading it evenly across the lips, similar to how toothpaste is applied to a toothbrush.

As South Korea is known to have the world’s most advanced and effective Korean skin care lines, Koreans have a wide range of brand options to choose from. Talking about V, he prefers to use Zeroid, which stands for Zero Steroid. Zeroid is a top-selling Korean skin care brand which started in Korean hospitals. It’s known as the #1 Dermocosmetic in Korea.

Though his skin care routine is pretty much this, one thing that Taehyung suggests the most is to drink tons of water and stay hydrated. Lack of water can result in dull, dehydrated skin.

natural remedies for seasonal allergies

Powerful Natural Remedies for Seasonal Allergies

Oh, seasonal allergies. They truly can make life miserable. The good news is, there are things we can do! Many unnecessarily suffer from seasonal allergies when a few simple natural remedies can offer allergy relief, even without medicine.

According to the CDC, over 30% of the population deals with some kind of allergy. And over 25% have seasonal allergies specifically. Common triggers include pollen from grass and trees, dust mite fecal particles, animal dander, certain foods, air pollution, personal care products, or even insect bites.

These triggers can lead to allergic reactions with a variety of symptoms, including a runny nose, itchy eyes, and watery eyes.

As prime allergy season is here (at least in our area), I’m sharing the natural remedies I’ve used and that work for my family when needed. These aren’t as fast or immediately effective as medication, but over the long term, these methods have lessened my seasonal allergies greatly. Some people even see permanent reversal.

What Causes Seasonal Allergies?

Diet, strong gut health, and overall health can make a big difference when it comes to seasonal allergies. That’s because an allergic response has everything to do with the immune system.

I like to describe the body as a bathtub. Every time anything enters our bodies — be it from food, water, air, etc. — our body reacts. This is a good thing and nature’s way of keeping the body in a state of balance (homeostasis).

At a certain point, if too much goes into the bathtub, it’s going to overflow. Overloaded and overstimulated, the immune system responds to normally harmless substances as if they’re a foreign invader.

How Allergy Symptoms Start

Clemens von Pirquet first coined the word “allergen” and helped pioneer the field of immunology in 1906. Since then, scientists have learned a lot about allergies.

“It may sound ridiculous at first that antibodies (which should protect against disease) are also responsible for disease. ” Pirquet

Allergic disorders are basically an overreaction by the body’s immune system. They happen when the body treats a harmless substance like a threat and responds by making more IgE antibodies. These IgE molecules then stick to mast cells. At the same time, T helper cells (specifically Type 1, called Th1) become involved, triggering the allergic response.

The immune system mistakenly goes into attack mode against things that aren’t really dangerous. The reactions can include a tight feeling in the bronchial tubes, more mucus, and more vascular permeability. Sometimes within minutes.

If the exposure is strong enough to get past the body’s first line of defense, the reaction then triggers more leukocytes and Type 2 T helper cells (Th2). This creates a stronger immune response that the body normally uses to fight off things like parasites and other physical invaders.

The reaction manifests in different ways depending on the person’s genetics and where the body perceives the invasion. Symptoms may include:

  • fatigue (sometimes extreme)
  • hay fever (runny nose, itchy eyes, congestion)
  • nasal drip
  • digestive upset and nausea
  • eczema
  • asthma
  • even anaphylaxis

When Allergies Become Chronic

And the more the person is exposed to the trigger, the more the body will chronically have the inflammatory response. A 2008 journal article explains how the system’s inflammatory response and the misery allergy sufferers feel is very real and more than a case of the sniffles!

Allergy testing can help show what’s triggering the issue, but conventional treatments are almost always the same, no matter the cause. This includes taking an antihistamine or corticosteroid, which can have unwanted side effects.

If you want to tackle allergies naturally, there are two main approaches:

  1. Limit exposure to possible allergens (like putting less in the bathtub)
  2. Support a strong, healthy immune system (like increasing the size of our bathtub)

This isn’t an either/or problem, but a both/and solution.

Natural Remedies For Seasonal Allergies

My kids and I don’t really have seasonal allergies anymore after doing the GAPS diet to strengthen our gut and immune system health. However,  I still occasionally get hit with an allergy attack from dust after cleaning (a reason not to clean? I think yes!).

We’ve found these simple natural remedies to be very effective for allergy relief. Different people seem to benefit from different remedies depending on certain genetic factors and which allergens they react to. It might be worth trying more than one of these natural remedies for allergies to see which works best for you.

Simple tips like using an air purifier with a HEPA filter reduce indoor allergens, like dust mites and pollen. Essential oils can also offer support during peak allergy season. A popular diffuser blend is lavender (antihistamine), peppermint (opens nasal passages), and lemon (thins mucus). Even these anti-inflammatory golden milk mango popsicles are a yummy way to lessen allergies!

Here are some other ways to tackle your allergies for good!

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an age-old remedy that’s often used for a variety of health issues. I’ve used it for allergy relief (and heartburn relief) with great success. The theory is that it can help reduce mucus and cleanse the lymphatic system, both of which are helpful for allergies.

There’s also some research to suggest ACV can help reduce inflammatory responses and support the immune system. While there isn’t a ton of research behind this remedy, many feel it’s worth a try.

What I did: When allergies hit, I mixed a teaspoon of organic, raw, and unfiltered apple cider vinegar into a glass of water. I drank this three times a day. This kind of vinegar has “the mother” in it, a colony of beneficial bacteria. Check the label, it should list if it has it.

I use this brand, but it’s easy enough to make your own. Apple cider vinegar helped me relieve acute allergy symptoms and seemed to help avoid allergy attacks as well when I do it daily. If you suffer from allergies at a certain time of year, you may want to start taking ACV well before.

2. Wash Your Nostrils

This remedy works by hindering the offending allergen from entering your airways and reducing nasal congestion.

Neti Pot

It took me a while to try the Neti Pot simply because I’m a big scaredy cat about pouring things in my nose. I’m glad I took the leap though because it’s not half as bad as it sounds! The basic theory is that you use a Neti Pot filled with a sterile saline solution to flush allergens out of the sinuses. It also helps prevent pathogens from invading during cold and flu season.

I was surprised to find that both conventional and holistic practitioners recommend nasal rinses. Be sure to use boiled and cooled or distilled water, not water from the tap (because parasites….ewww).

To use: Either use a pre-made saline rinse or make your own. Once at body temp, fill the Neti Pot, pour through one nostril, and let it drain out the other. Get full instructions here.

Saline Spray

An option for Neti Pot sissies like me. I like this natural saline spray with xylitol for extra help with soothing inflammation and opening airways. One of my kids with large tonsils uses it to help keep post-nasal drip and sore throats away. Regularly using a nasal spray can help reduce irritation from allergens.

To use: Spray saline into the nostrils a few times a week or even daily for routine maintenance.

3. Quercetin

Quercetin is a natural bioflavonoid that helps stabilize mast cells to keep them from releasing histamine. It’s also a potent anti-inflammatory that can help reduce overall allergy symptoms. It’s best used as a long-term remedy and many people start taking it about 4-6 weeks before allergy season.

To use: Although quercetin is naturally found in foods like citrus and broccoli, it’s very difficult to get enough to relieve allergies from food alone. Quercetin supplements can help prevent allergies and help with acute symptoms.

4. Nettle Leaf

Stinging nettle leaf is another natural antihistamine that can be very effective. It works by naturally blocking the body’s ability to make histamine. You can use nettle tea, tincture, or capsules for allergy relief. It’s available online, but grows wild in many places.

You can also combine nettle with other herbs to make a soothing herbal tea. Peppermint, raspberry leaf, and nettle make a refreshing allergy relief tea. Lavender is another powerful antihistamine that pairs well with nettle in tea.

What I do: I often include nettle in homemade anti-inflammatory tea during allergy season and use capsules for acute relief.

5. Probiotics

Allergies are the result of an imbalance in the immune system that causes the body to react too strongly. Research shows that when the gut has a good balance of healthy bacteria, people notice fewer allergies. There’s even emerging evidence linking a pregnant mother’s gut bacteria to their child’s likelihood of getting allergies throughout life. Not getting enough exposure to dirt and some germs can also negatively impact the immune system.

While we can’t do much about our mothers’ diets while they were pregnant, there’s still hope. Balancing gut bacteria now and getting enough beneficial bacteria can have a positive effect on allergies.

What I do: We eat a varied diet that includes plenty of fermented foods and drinks, which can help boost gut bacteria. We also take a quality probiotic.

6. Local Honey

Eating raw honey that’s produced near your home may help your body adapt to local allergens, like pollen. Some compare it to a natural version of allergy shots, but without the side effects. There isn’t much scientific evidence to back this one, but there seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence from people who have tried it.

Research shows raw honey has anti-inflammatory effects and can suppress inflammatory IgE levels and modulate mast cell response. A 2013 study also found honey had anti-histamine effects in those with allergic rhinitis.

What I do: Eat a teaspoon (or more) of raw, locally produced honey once or more a day. Some suggest starting this a month or so before allergy season.

7. Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Anti-inflammatory foods, teas, and spices may help reduce unpleasant allergy symptoms. A 2016 animal study found that ginger reduced sneezing and congestion as well as lowered mast cell response. Researchers have also looked at green tea for calming allergies and inflammation with good results.

What I do: Serve plenty of herbs and spices with meals, as well as green and herbal teas. This ginger switchel drink combines raw honey, ACV, and anti-inflammatory ginger for a delicious probiotic drink. It’s a powerhouse of support for allergies.

8. Homeopathics and Herbal Remedies

I’ve already mentioned some different herbs to take, but there are several really good pre-made allergy blends now. Homeopathics and herbal supplements are different modalities, but both can work well for allergies. These can often work faster for acute symptom relief than long-term solutions, like diet changes.

Want something quick and easy in pill form? Genexa offers natural homeopathic remedies that work well for allergies without the OTC or prescription meds.

9. Addressing the Root Cause of Seasonal Allergies

Going back to the bathtub analogy: some of us are born with a smaller bathtub due to genetics and early environmental exposures. Things like mold exposure, Lyme disease, and past trauma can also cause our bathtubs to fill up fast. Identifying and addressing underlying health issues that are stressing the body and immune system helps bail out our tub.

This is where working with a qualified practitioner for personalised dietary advice and testing can be really helpful.

Diet Changes

Often, our gut health is the key to truly reversing allergy symptoms. This deeper healing can reduce chronic inflammation and support long-term immune balance. Elimination diets and bone broth are a good place to start. Those with histamine issues often find that meat stock is a better option than bone broth at first (which is high in histamines).

I’ve found that addressing gut health is key for severe allergies and gut healing/rebalancing.

What we did: We followed the GAPS diet for several months and had success improving our seasonal allergies. One of my kids even reversed some rather severe food allergies with this approach.

Gut Testing

If you truly suffer from allergies and suspect you have a compromised gut, consider testing. This helps give a clear picture of what’s going on in your body and how to fix it.

Yes, this literally means mailing poop to a lab (kids may find this one fun!), but I learned so much from this test. I still continue to benefit from knowing specific ways to improve my individual gut. Advances in at-home testing mean you don’t need to go to a doctor or a lab.

What I use: Viome is the company I use and trust. See the results of my gut health test here.

Final Thoughts on Natural Remedies For Seasonal Allergies

Getting faster symptom relief while working on the root causes of seasonal allergies was key for our family. After implementing these changes, I hardly deal with allergies anymore!

Don’t feel like you need to try all of these natural remedies at once, but see what works best for you. Speaking from personal experience, they can work really well!

Customer-Led Japanese Beauty, Voice Analysis, and Planetary Health

What kind of company is EBM, and what philosophy do you value most?

EBM operates as a foundational skincare company that stays close to people. At the heart of everything we do is the commitment to stand beside our customers and support them in a deeply personal way.

Our company name, EBM, stands for Energy, Beauty, and Mind. It represents our mission to guide people toward a state in which these three elements are fulfilled through our products, technologies, and services, all of which support both physical and mental circulation and vitality.

As a skincare company, we place great importance on the skin—but not merely as a surface. When the mind and body are healthy, that state is reflected in the skin. As people become more comfortable in their own skin, they gain the energy to live more authentically. We value this positive cycle and strive to nurture it in everything we do.

Could you describe EBM’s business model?

Our core businesses center on the development of cosmetics and health-related products, as well as the operation of our beauty and wellness specialty salons, known as Skincare Studios. In addition, we operate through multiple channels, including direct marketing, online communication, wholesale distribution, and agency partnerships.

How does EBM approach product development?

We currently operate approximately 40 Skincare Studios in Japan and overseas, where we provide skincare treatments using our own products. By listening directly to customers, observing changes in their skin, and receiving real-time feedback in these studios, we are able to quickly reflect those insights in both our treatments and product development.

Today, we offer more than 200 proprietary skincare and beauty-related food products. This breadth is the result of continuously striving to respond to each individual customer’s unique concerns. In turn, this creates a virtuous cycle that allows us to make increasingly tailored and meaningful proposals.

Please tell us more about your Skincare Studios.

We currently operate four brands across approximately 40 locations in Japan and overseas.

At our Skincare Studios, we place great importance on hands-on skincare and body treatments, which we refer to as “teate,” or healing through touch. The warmth of human hands felt through the skin is transmitted to the brain and provides deep emotional healing. Gentle, mindful touch is also said to promote the release of oxytocin—the so-called “happiness hormone”—helping bring the mind and body into balance.

Beyond the scientific reasoning, we believe that placing sincere intention and prayer into one’s hands is what truly heals people. This spirit and sincerity are integral to our approach.

We have also consistently focused on two core beauty philosophies: “washing the pores” through our pore-cleansing techniques, and warming the body to promote healthy circulation. These ideas—removing impurities to awaken the skin’s natural strength, and encouraging full-body circulation—form the foundation of our proprietary beauty methods. They are deeply connected to Japan’s traditional hot spring and therapeutic bathing culture.

By combining these approaches according to each customer’s physical and emotional condition, our Skincare Studios serve as places where Energy, Beauty, and Mind are brought into balance through personalized care and heartfelt hospitality.

Could you introduce each of your Skincare Studio brands?

We currently operate four Skincare Studio brands: VS28 Skincare Studio BALI, e.b.c.c., e.b.c.c. Men’s Skincare Studio, and BLOOM AURA the Journey.

VS28 Skincare Studio BALI was born from the fusion of inspiration drawn from Bali as a retreat destination with Japanese hospitality, sincerity, and respect for nature. At its core is our founding treatment—pore cleansing—combined with healing derived from natural energy.

e.b.c.c. was created to address the deeper challenges of modern life. Based on the concept of “five-senses beauty”—experiencing abundant comfort through all five senses—it aims to guide individuals toward their optimal state through care that restores balance to both mind and body.

Since 2022, we have also operated e.b.c.c. Men’s Skincare Studio, a brand dedicated to men. By offering services optimized for male skin and providing a space where men feel comfortable, we bring nearly four decades of expertise into the growing men’s beauty market.

BLOOM AURA the Journey is EBM’s flagship brand, born from decades of experience working closely with customers’ physical and emotional wellbeing. Designed as a space for deep personal maintenance, it is chosen by business leaders and individuals seeking peak performance. The Japanese-inspired interior, private rooms, and soundscapes—such as temple bells and flowing water—allow guests to reconnect with themselves through breath and stillness.

Many of our customers move naturally between multiple brands as their life stages, physical conditions, and emotional needs evolve. This multi-brand approach allows us to build long-term relationships rather than one-time transactions, supporting customers throughout different phases of their lives.

Overseas, we currently operate a directly managed studio in Bali and work with partners in Taiwan.

You place strong emphasis on staff training and spirituality. Why is this important?

Through our proprietary education system, the EBM Academy, we provide not only technical training in skin theory, cosmetic science, and counseling, but also focus on nurturing skincare advisors who can heal the heart.

To support this, we even conduct training at the temple where I was raised, helping staff cultivate inner balance. Our symbol is a wildflower—embodying our wish for staff who gently heal customers’ hearts and live with wildflower-like resilience and grace.

What is your philosophy regarding touch and energy?

Touching another person is a profound act. If the practitioner’s mind and body are not in balance, that state is transmitted to the customer. Touch infused with love, gratitude, and a sense of mission yields completely different outcomes than touch without intention.

We do not believe that using the same products will always produce the same results. Invisible intention is conveyed through the hands and changes the effect. This is why we teach our staff to maintain harmony within themselves. This is the foundation of our training, and I believe it connects with the spirituality that Japan has traditionally embodied.

How do you work to better understand your customers?

Understanding our customers is our highest priority. Beyond experience and communication, we utilize skin and body assessments using specialized diagnostic equipment, birthdate-based counseling, and even wellness diagnostics through voice analysis.

Our voice-based wellness analysis system, Coenal, analyzes individuality, fatigue types, and optimal beauty and health methods using vocal data. It is built on insights from over 20,000 analyses and 39 years of studio experience.

We also partner with specialized institutions to provide gut microbiome and skin analysis,  and train advisors to clearly explain results. Customer understanding is the foundation of our product development and business expansion.

What exactly is the voice analysis tool?

By simply repeating one’s name for six seconds, the system instantly analyzes personal traits, physical condition, and aptitudes across 13 patterns. Just as fingerprints exist on our hands, voiceprints exist in our voices.

Voice carries vibrations from the entire body and reflects both physical condition and thought patterns. Coenal transforms 39 years of attentive listening and counseling expertise into technology. It can help foster the communication skills of reading emotions and truly listening, and from there, help create the hospitality that Japan is known for. It enables personalized beauty and health advice and can be utilized in HR, mental health, and more across industries.

Why are Taiwan and Indonesia central to your overseas expansion?

In Bali, Indonesia, we have operated our directly managed studio, BALI IN BALI,  since 1994.

During my visit to Bali, I was deeply moved by the natural energy and culture of prayer. Inspired by the concept of “bathing in Bali” and elevating one’s vital energy, we established this skincare studio. With BALI IN BALI as our origin point, we then launched VS28 Skincare Studio BALI in Japan—salons where guests can experience Bali’s reverence for nature, the hospitality and spirituality created by its people, and profound healing.

In recent years, the experiential value of retreats has gained attention, and Bali has become popular as a destination for restoring mental and physical vitality. With the healing we learned from Bali as our foundation, we continue to refine and elevate our offerings. Beginning with BLOOM AURA the Journey Ginza, which opened in 2019, we are also planning new salon ventures that place even greater emphasis on the retreat experience.

For us, overseas expansion is not simply about opening locations abroad, but about translating our philosophy of healing, circulation, and human connection into cultures that resonate with those values.

In Taiwan, we began franchising in 1992. Since 2024, we have transitioned to an agency partnership model, continuing to support salon operations and e-commerce sales. Our pore-cleansing philosophy has been warmly embraced, and many customers continue to use our products long-term.

What are your future plans for global expansion?

We are actively exploring expansion into markets such as Thailand, Mexico, and Paris, encompassing cosmetics, salons, and Coenal deployment, supported by collaborative partner companies.

Coenal can be localized into multiple languages. Through its global expansion, we hope to bring the attentive and emotionally nuanced communication that characterizes Japanese culture to people worldwide, enabling them to enhance their own business development.

We also plan to expand warming space bathing facilities incorporating our Planetary Energy Beauty Mist, an innovative beauty and wellness technology.

Please explain the Planetary Energy Beauty Mist.

This beauty mist focuses on the balance of oxidation and reduction in the body. It can be applied to the skin and body, as well as used throughout an entire space. While incorporating advanced technology, it is rooted in our long-held belief in restoring the body’s natural circulation and metabolism.

What do you mean by “space bathing”?

Space bathing refers to cultivating beauty simply by being within a space infused with Planetary Energy Beauty Mist. This gentle, warming mist enhances circulation, and cleanses the body without strain, naturally balancing the body and drawing out beauty —making it suitable even for seniors or those with fragile health. We see it as a next-generation beauty experience.

What guides your R&D strategy?

At our Skincare Studios, skincare advisors listen deeply to customers who come to us with concerns, carefully examine their skin, and work to uncover the true causes of their concerns. The customers’ concerns, their voices, and the experience of supporting them closely are all reflected in our product development.

Daily reports are quickly shared and analyzed, allowing rapid evolution. This speed is one of our strengths. While valuing encounters with specialists and developers, we continue to evolve constantly.

What are the strengths of Japanese beauty?

Japan’s strengths in cosmetics lie in technology, quality control, and ingredient trust. Additionally, Japan’s long-established cultures of fermentation, traditional herbal medicine (Wakan), and bathing are distinctive strengths of Japanese beauty.

It is said that as early as the 700s CE, during Japan’s Nara period, temples had steam baths called “karafuro.” At Hokkeji Temple in Nara Prefecture, a karafuro created by Empress Kōmyō still remains. The culture of cleansing the body for health has deep historical roots.

EBM’s philosophy aligns with this heritage. Since our founding, we have believed that mastering pore cleansing and drawing out the skin’s innate strength through gentle water-based technology and high-quality cosmetics is the most direct path to beauty. This resonates strongly with international audiences seeking simplicity and authenticity.

Furthermore, Japanese beauty is not standardized—it encompasses the invisible, such as the culture of omotenashi that reads people’s subtle nuances and their “ki” (vital energy).

We also place great importance on each customer’s “ki” each day. Customers never arrive in the same physical or emotional state, and we believe true beauty care requires the ability to read subtle changes in a person’s condition and energy each day. This sensitivity has become one of our core strengths and reflects an essential element of Japanese beauty culture.

How do you address an aging society?

For seniors, having a place where someone truly listens is vital. Our Skincare Studios are not merely spaces for treatments, but also places where we listen to customers and embrace their hearts. We believe this is particularly essential for senior care, and we are also committed to developing gentle, body-friendly products for elderly customers.

We aim to create a future where beauty and caregiving unite. The principles we value—warming the body and promoting circulation—are fundamental to beauty and health across all generations.

What is the MIRAIWA+ brand and planetary health philosophy?

Human beauty and happiness cannot exist without nature, the Earth, and the universe. We develop products and pursue various activities based on the principles of “Planetary Health”—the understanding that both people and the planet must be healthy.

MIRAIWA+ is a product brand featuring gut microbiome analysis kits and a femcare line.  We focus on microorganisms that support the body’s circulatory systems—gut, skin, oral, and vaginal environments—and develop products in collaboration with specialized institutions.

Rooted in the philosophy of Planetary Health, we believe that human beauty, environmental health, and the circulation of life are inseparable. MIRAIWA+ represents our commitment to designing beauty solutions that respect both the human body and the ecosystems that sustain it.

What environmental initiatives do you pursue?

Through our Planetary Health Project, we collaborate with companies and schools to distribute fulvic acid to soil, cultivating beneficial microbes.

Fulvic acid is a concentrated essence of mountain ecosystems and has positive effects on both people and soil. We believe it is essential that both people and the planet remain healthy, and beyond product development, we engage in environmentally conscious initiatives.

Finally, how would you describe EBM in one sentence?

EBM is a company that delivers energy to people and the planet, creating happiness through beauty. By helping people become beautiful, we help them find happiness and live fulfilling lives.

As a company that delivers happiness to people, we are committed to ensuring our employees’ happiness, so they can extend that happiness to our customers and society as a whole. We will continue to strive toward this vision.
