A new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered skincare platform, Smartskin Africa, has been introduced by Accessplus Communications Ltd to help individuals better understand the unique characteristics of their skin and receive personalised product recommendations. The innovation marks another major step in Ghana’s growing integration of technology into everyday wellness and beauty routines.

Speaking at the official launch on November 14, CEO of Accessplus Communications Ltd, Kelvin Boateng, explained that Smartskin Africa was created to address the widespread lack of knowledge many people have about their own skin types.

“Most people do not know their skin. Most people do not know the type of skin they have,” he noted. “A lot of people follow the masses using products simply because they saw them on TV or because someone else said it worked for them.”

Smartskin Africa works by allowing users to take or upload a selfie, which the AI system then scans and analyses. The platform assesses up to 15 key skin parameters, including acne, uneven skin tone, dark spots, multi-pigmentation, hydration levels, eye wrinkles, dark circles, skin firmness, redness, and crow’s feet.

According to Mr. Boateng, the platform’s strength lies not only in its advanced AI capabilities but also in its deep training on African skin.

“Our AI is well trained when it comes to African skin. And when I say African skin, I don’t mean just dark skin. There are various shades, caramel, light skin, mid-brown, dark brown,” he said.

The system, built by a team of computer engineers and dermatologists from around the world, also doubles as a skin-tracking tool, enabling users to monitor gradual changes in their skin over time. This feature supports individuals seeking to understand how factors such as weather, dehydration, and stress affect their skin health.

“Your skin changes. It evolves. If you decide to use a product to improve, for example, sunburns, how are you sure your skin is getting better or worse? That’s where this platform comes in,” Mr. Boateng explained.

For the most accurate analysis, users are advised to scan their faces in good lighting, without makeup or sweat preferably in the morning after a shower.

Mr. Boateng emphasised that Smartskin Africa is not intended for diagnosing severe skin conditions.

“If you have a serious skin concern, we advise that you seek medical attention,” he cautioned.

The introduction of Smartskin Africa adds to the growing wave of digital innovation in Africa’s beauty and wellness sector, offering personalised solutions in a space where expert guidance has traditionally been limited.

How Should Your Skincare Routine Change As The Weather Transitions From Autumn To Winter? | Beauty/Fashion News

How Should Your Skincare Routine Change As The Weather Transitions From Autumn To Winter? | Beauty/Fashion News

As the crisp autumn air gives way to the chill of winter, your skin begins to face an entirely new set of challenges. The drop in temperature, harsh winds, and indoor heating can strip the skin of its natural moisture barrier—leaving it dry, dull, and sometimes irritated. Adapting your skincare routine during this seasonal transition is key to maintaining a healthy, hydrated complexion.

Here’s how to adjust your regimen as autumn turns to winter:

1. Switch to a Richer Moisturizer

Add Zee News as a Preferred Source

In autumn, lightweight lotions may suffice, but winter demands something more nourishing. As humidity drops, your skin loses water faster, leading to dryness and flakiness.

What to do: Replace gel-based moisturizers with cream or balm formulations containing ceramides, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and squalane.

Pro tip: Apply moisturizer on slightly damp skin to lock in hydration.

2. Cut Back on Harsh Cleansers

Cleansers that worked fine in autumn might feel too stripping in winter.

What to do: Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser—preferably one that’s cream-based or oil-based—to avoid compromising your skin barrier.

Avoid: Foaming or alcohol-based cleansers, which can worsen dryness and sensitivity.

3. Exfoliate Wisely

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps other products absorb better, but over-exfoliating in winter can irritate already dry skin.

What to do: Limit exfoliation to once a week using mild chemical exfoliants like lactic acid or PHA instead of strong scrubs.

Tip: Follow immediately with a hydrating serum or mask to replenish moisture.

4. Add a Hydrating Serum

Winter air lacks humidity, so it’s crucial to introduce an extra layer of hydration.

What to use: Look for serums rich in hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or panthenol. These ingredients draw water into the skin, giving it a plump, healthy look.

Layering tip: Apply serum before your moisturizer to help seal in moisture.

5. Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Even though the sun feels weaker in winter, UV rays are still present and can cause premature aging and pigmentation.

What to do: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, especially if you spend time outdoors or near windows.

6. Use Overnight Masks and Humidifiers

Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself, so winter is the perfect time to use richer treatments.

What to do: Apply a hydrating overnight mask once or twice a week.

Bonus tip: Running a humidifier in your bedroom helps maintain moisture levels in the air—and in your skin.

7. Protect Lips and Hands

These areas often suffer first in cold weather.

What to do: Keep a nourishing lip balm (with beeswax or lanolin) and a hand cream on hand. Reapply frequently, especially after washing or being outdoors.

5 Secrets to Hydrated, Glowing Skin | Skincare Advice

5 Secrets to Hydrated, Glowing Skin | Skincare Advice

Healthy, glowing skin reflects how well it is cared for inside and out. Many people focus only on products, but lasting hydration and radiance come from a mix of smart habits and consistent care. The secret to hydrated, glowing skin lies in protecting, nourishing, and supporting it every day with simple, proven steps.

This article explains how small changes, such as daily sun protection, proper moisture balance, and a nutrient-rich diet, can make a visible difference. It guides you through practical ways to strengthen the skin barrier, improve texture, and maintain a natural glow without complicated routines or harsh treatments.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect skin from UV damage and prevent dehydration

Daily sunscreen use helps keep skin healthy and hydrated. Broad-spectrum formulas block both UVA and UVB rays, which cause sunburn, uneven tone, and early signs of aging. Without protection, UV exposure breaks down collagen and weakens the skin barrier, leading to dryness and fine lines.

Experts recommend applying sunscreen to all exposed areas, even on cloudy days. Reapplying every two hours keeps protection consistent, especially after sweating or swimming. A lightweight, non-greasy formula works best for daily wear under makeup or moisturizer.

Brands such as Elire K-Skin care focus on science-backed products that support skin health. Pairing sunscreen with a hydrating cream or serum helps lock in moisture and maintain a smooth texture. Consistent use prevents surface dehydration and helps the skin stay balanced throughout the day.

Regular sunscreen use also supports the results of other skincare treatments. It protects active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C from breaking down, allowing them to work more effectively.

Use a hyaluronic acid serum to boost skin hydration and maintain a plump, glowing appearance

Hyaluronic acid holds water in the skin and helps prevent dryness. It acts like a moisture magnet that keeps the surface smooth and soft. As a result, skin often looks fresher and more balanced throughout the day.

A lightweight serum with hyaluronic acid works well under moisturizer. It draws water into the skin’s outer layer and helps maintain a plump texture. For best results, the serum should go on slightly damp skin before applying cream or lotion.

This ingredient supports all skin types, including oily and sensitive skin. It helps reduce the look of fine lines caused by dehydration and supports a healthy glow. In addition, it pairs well with other ingredients such as vitamin C or ceramides for extra hydration support.

Regular use of a hyaluronic acid serum helps the skin stay hydrated, soft, and comfortable. It provides an easy step that fits into both morning and evening routines.

Incorporate gentle exfoliation twice a week to remove dead skin cells and improve radiance

Dead skin cells can build up on the surface and make skin look dull. Gentle exfoliation helps clear this layer so fresh, healthy cells can appear. As a result, skin feels smoother and looks brighter.

Experts often recommend exfoliating about twice a week. This schedule helps maintain balance without causing dryness or irritation. People with sensitive skin may use a mild product with fine particles or low-strength acids.

It is best to exfoliate after cleansing and before moisturizing. This step allows serums and creams to absorb more effectively. Therefore, skin can retain moisture better and appear more even in tone.

Too much exfoliation can strip natural oils and weaken the barrier. A gentle approach keeps skin clear while protecting its natural balance. Over time, regular care supports a soft, hydrated, and radiant look.

Moisturize with ceramide-rich creams to strengthen the skin barrier and lock in moisture

Ceramides occur naturally in the skin and help form a protective layer that reduces water loss. However, their levels drop with age, which can make skin feel dry or tight. A moisturizer that contains ceramides can help replace what the skin loses over time.

These creams support the skin’s natural barrier so it stays firm and smooth. As a result, the outer layer holds moisture better and feels more comfortable. Regular use can help reduce dryness, redness, and rough texture.

Ceramide-rich formulas often include fatty acids and other lipids that work together to keep the skin hydrated. They also help protect against environmental stressors that can weaken the barrier. Therefore, applying a ceramide moisturizer daily can keep the skin balanced and more resistant to irritation.

For best results, it helps to apply the cream after cleansing while the skin is still slightly damp. This step traps moisture and strengthens the barrier for long-lasting hydration.

Drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced diet rich in antioxidants for internal skin health

Healthy skin starts from within. The body needs enough water each day to keep cells hydrated and support natural repair. Dehydration can make the skin look dull or tight, while steady water intake helps it appear smoother and more supple.

A balanced diet also supports skin from the inside. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts, help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. These nutrients may reduce signs of stress on the skin and support a more even tone.

In addition, vitamins like C and E play a key role in maintaining a healthy barrier. They help the body produce collagen and defend against environmental effects. Therefore, drinking water and eating nutrient-rich foods work together to keep the skin clear and naturally bright.

Healthy, glowing skin depends on steady care and smart daily choices. Simple habits such as drinking enough water, using gentle cleansers, and applying sunscreen help keep moisture and protect the skin barrier.

Consistency matters more than expensive products. A balanced diet, enough sleep, and limited sun exposure all support long-term skin health.

Each small step adds up. By maintaining clean, hydrated skin and avoiding harsh products, anyone can achieve a natural, healthy glow.

What Happened When I Finally Tried Exosomes, The Biggest Skincare Trend Of 2025

What Happened When I Finally Tried Exosomes, The Biggest Skincare Trend Of 2025

What have you done to your face?” I ask a colleague visiting from Germany, his skin akin to that of a lit candle. “Exosomes,” he replies, smiling, passing a hand across his luminescent visage.

I’m not surprised. Recently, it’s been hard to move for talk of exosomes. A skin-rejuvenation treatment that’s reached our shores after years of popularity in South Korea, exosomes have become synonymous with radiant skin and minimal downtime – a beauty editor’s happy place. There are in-clinic exosome treatments and at-home options.

On social media, people are reporting back after having exosomes injected into their scalps for excess hair shedding. (This, I hasten to add, is not legal in the UK yet.) So what are these genius things and why have they got the skincare industry so abuzz?

What are exosomes?

“Exosomes are tiny, extra-cellular nano vesicles – very small particles that can penetrate easily and are involved in cell-to-cell communication,” facialist to the stars and editors alike, Sarah Chapman, explains to me.

Think of them like clever couriers carrying biological information between cells, all the while carrying proteins, lipids, peptides and other genetic material along with them. Most impressively, exosomes accelerate skin healing and skin regeneration.

These ultra-reparative, anti-inflammatory messengers target skin texture and hydration, as well as supporting collagen and elastin production, and maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier.

Where do exosomes come from?

In the UK, the only legal exosomes are those that aren’t derived from humans – though we do naturally produce them. Instead, fish, bovine, yeast-cultured and plant exosomes, which can be manipulated to mimic human exosomes, are all that’s currently on offer.

Celebrity facialist Shane Cooper uses E50 Korean exosomes, derived from the fibroblast cells of salmon, and says their concentration and efficacy rate has helped him to repair his own skin barrier and calm down rosacea flare-ups. (E50 Korean exosomes aren’t to be confused with polynucleotides, another salmon byproduct also used to stimulate cell regeneration.)

What happens in an exosome treatment?

The way exosomes are administered can vary, though they’re usually introduced to the skin via injection or applied to the skin after a round of microneedling. There is a third, needle-free way, but more on that later.

“Exosomes can be delivered into the skin via direct injection – mesotherapy style,” aesthetic doctor and founder of the eponymous clinic Dr David Jack tells me, “which is where tiny, superficial injections place the exosome solution precisely into the dermis [the inner of the two main layers in the skin].”

The method you’re most likely to come across is microneedling. “Microchannels are created in the skin, which then allow topical exosomes to penetrate,” Dr Jack says, making me think of a crumpet slathered in exosome-rich butter. These microchannels allow the exosomes to reach deeper into the skin and work their magic where it’s most needed.

What skin concerns can exosomes treat?

Besides being suitable for innumerable skin concerns – from acne scarring to improving skin volume and calming skin redness and irritation – exosome treatments are unique due to the remarkably short recovery times required.

5 Step Skincare Routine For Dry Skin To Remain Hydrated This Winter

Winter air is beautiful, but it can be brutal on your skin. The combination of cold outdoor temperatures and dry indoor heat strips away your skin’s natural moisture, leading to tightness, flaking, and discomfort. If you suffer from dry skin, surviving the season requires more than just a heavy moisturiser—it demands a strategic approach. This guide provides an easy five-step skincare routine designed specifically for dry and parched complexions. We will show you exactly how to layer essential products, lock in hydration, and reinforce your skin barrier, ensuring your skin remains soft, supple, and healthy throughout the chilliest months. Get ready to finally conquer winter dryness!

5 Step Skincare Routine For Dry Skin To Try This Winter

Here is a super hydrating and easy five-step skincare routine for dry skin that you should try this winter to stay moisturised.

1. Gentle Cleanser

Ditch harsh foaming washes that strip your skin’s natural oils, which are vital protection in winter. Choose a cream, balm, or oil-based cleanser formulated to lift impurities without disrupting the lipid barrier. Massage it onto dry skin before rinsing with lukewarm water to prevent temperature shock. This vital first step prepares your skin without causing tightness or further dehydration, setting the foundation for deep moisture absorption.

2. Milky Toner

Forget astringent toners containing alcohol; they exacerbate dryness in winter. Instead, soak a cotton pad or pat a few drops of a rich, milky, or essence-style toner directly onto your face. Look for ingredients like ceramides or glycerin to soothe irritation and add a layer of immediate hydration. This step instantly calms your skin and optimises it to effectively drink in the active ingredients that follow.

3. Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Apply this powerhouse ingredient while your skin is still damp from the toner. Hyaluronic Acid acts as a moisture magnet, drawing hydration into the deeper layers of the epidermis, plumping the skin. For best results in dry, cold air, layer a light facial mist or toner over the serum to give the HA molecules ample water to absorb. This plumping action minimises fine lines caused by dehydration.

4. Hydrating Moisturiser

Select a thick, emollient cream rich in occlusives like shea butter or petrolatum. Apply a generous amount to seal in the serum and prevent Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)—the primary cause of winter dryness. Warming the moisturiser between your hands before pressing it into your face enhances absorption and ensures a protective, continuous moisture layer lasts all day, preventing flakiness.

5. Sunscreen With 50 SPF

Even on cloudy winter days, UV rays penetrate the atmosphere and damage the skin barrier, leading to moisture loss. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 50 or higher as the final step. Look for formulas with added moisturising ingredients like Vitamin E to avoid a chalky finish. This crucial protective layer shields your skin from UVA/UVB damage, which helps maintain the integrity of your hard-earned hydration.

You don’t need expensive skincare treatments if these 8 habits are part of your daily routine

You don’t need expensive skincare treatments if these 8 habits are part of your daily routine

The beauty and wellness industries thrive on our belief that transformation comes in expensive packages.

We’re constantly bombarded with messages about the latest miracle serum, the revolutionary treatment, the must-have device that will finally give us glowing skin and boundless energy.

But what if the most powerful tools for looking and feeling your best don’t come with a hefty price tag? What if they’re actually habits you can start implementing today, right now, without spending a dime?

The truth is, consistency with simple practices often outperforms sporadic use of expensive products. Your body is incredibly resilient and knows how to maintain itself when you give it what it actually needs. Not what marketing tells you it needs, but what science and lived experience show actually works.

Here are eight habits that, when practiced regularly, can do more for your wellbeing than most expensive treatments ever could.

1) Moving your body consistently (not obsessively)

I discovered trail running at 28 as a way to cope with work stress, and it changed everything. But here’s what I got wrong initially: I thought more was always better. I pushed myself into compulsive exercise territory, believing that rest was laziness.

The truth is, your body doesn’t need punishing workouts. It needs regular movement that feels good and sustainable. Maybe that’s a daily walk, maybe it’s dancing in your kitchen, maybe it’s yoga that you’re not naturally flexible for but do anyway.

What matters is consistency over intensity. Find movement that doesn’t feel like punishment, and your body will thank you in ways no expensive treatment can match.

2) Prioritizing sleep like it’s your job

During my finance days, I wore my 70-hour weeks like a badge of honor. Sleep was for people who weren’t ambitious enough. I was wrong, and my body kept score in ways my spreadsheets never showed.

Sleep is when your body does its most important repair work. Your skin regenerates. Your brain consolidates memories and clears out metabolic waste. Your immune system strengthens.

Miss out on quality sleep, and no amount of serums or supplements can compensate.

The magic happens when you treat sleep as non-negotiable. Same bedtime each night. Dark, cool room. No screens for an hour before bed.

Sounds boring, right? But this “boring” habit is more powerful than any anti-aging cream on the market.

When I finally started prioritizing sleep after my burnout at 36, people kept asking what I was doing differently. They assumed it was some new skincare routine. Nope. I was just finally giving my body the recovery time it had been begging for.

3) Eating plants (lots of them)

I transitioned to veganism at 35 after reading about factory farming, but the health benefits caught me off guard.

My skin cleared up. My energy stabilized. I stopped getting the afternoon crashes that used to send me reaching for another coffee.

You don’t have to go fully vegan, but increasing your plant intake does remarkable things. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that your body uses to repair and protect itself at a cellular level.

I grow vegetables and herbs in my backyard now, and there’s something deeply satisfying about eating food you’ve grown yourself. But even if you don’t garden, just adding more colorful plants to your plate makes a measurable difference.

The standard advice to “eat the rainbow” isn’t just cute. Different colored plants contain different phytonutrients that support various body systems. Purple foods support brain health. Orange foods boost immune function. Dark leafy greens support detoxification.

Your body knows what to do with this information when you give it the raw materials.

4) Staying hydrated (for real, not just when you’re thirsty)

This one seems almost too simple to mention, but I did ignore it for years.

By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. And chronic low-level dehydration affects everything from your skin elasticity to your mental clarity to your joint health.

I keep a water bottle with me constantly now. Not as an accessory, but as a tool. I drink water first thing in the morning, before meals, during my runs, while I’m writing. It’s become so automatic that I barely think about it.

The results? My skin looks plumper. I have fewer headaches. My digestion improved. My energy is more consistent throughout the day. None of this required anything beyond tap water and intention.

If plain water bores you, add lemon, cucumber, or mint. Drink herbal tea. Eat water-rich foods like melon and cucumber. Just get the water in, however works for you.

5) Managing stress instead of just enduring it

For years, I thought stress management meant occasional massages or vacations. I was treating symptoms, not causes.

Chronic stress literally accelerates aging at a cellular level, shortening your telomeres and increasing inflammation throughout your body.

Real stress management means daily practices that regulate your nervous system. For me, that’s meditation every morning after my run. It took me months to stop thinking it was “too woo-woo” for my analytical mind, but now I can’t imagine starting my day without it.

Maybe meditation isn’t your thing. That’s fine. Deep breathing exercises. Journaling. Time in nature. Regular therapy. The specific practice matters less than having one at all.

6) Removing your makeup before bed (every single night)

Look, I get it. Some nights you’re exhausted. You just want to fall into bed. The last thing you want to do is stand at the sink for five minutes cleansing your face.

But sleeping in your makeup is one of the worst things you can do for your skin.

While you sleep, your skin goes into repair mode, regenerating cells and producing collagen. When you leave makeup, dirt, and oil on your face, you’re literally clogging the pathways your skin uses to renew itself.

Not to be an alarmist, but you’ll end up with clogged pores, breakouts, dull skin, premature aging, and even eye infections if you’re sleeping in mascara or eyeliner. Your pillowcase also becomes a breeding ground for bacteria that gets transferred back to your skin night after night.

The fix is simple: keep cleansing wipes next to your bed for nights when you’re too tired for your full routine. It’s not ideal, but it’s infinitely better than sleeping in a full face of makeup.

On regular nights, use a gentle cleanser that actually removes everything without stripping your skin.

I learned this lesson the hard way during my finance days when I’d come home past midnight and skip my skincare routine. My skin looked perpetually congested and tired, and no amount of expensive serums could compensate for this one bad habit.

Make it easy on yourself. Simplify your nighttime routine if needed, but never skip the cleansing step. Your future skin will thank you.

7) Spending time outside daily

I run trails 5-6 days a week, usually in the early morning before writing, and those hours outside do more for my wellbeing than any treatment I could purchase.

Sunlight regulates your circadian rhythm. Fresh air improves respiratory health. Nature exposure reduces cortisol and blood pressure.

Even on days when I don’t run, I make sure to spend time outside. Gardening. Walking to the farmers’ market. Sitting on my porch with morning coffee.

We’ve become so disconnected from the natural world that we’ve forgotten our bodies are part of it. Your skin needs some sun exposure to produce vitamin D. Your eyes need to see natural light to maintain healthy sleep cycles. Your immune system benefits from exposure to diverse outdoor microbes.

Obviously, you need sun protection to prevent damage. But hiding from the sun entirely isn’t the answer either. Find your balance. Get outside. Notice how much better you feel.

This brings me to the next point…

8) Applying sunscreen daily (yes, even indoors)

If there’s one skincare habit that dermatologists universally agree on, it’s this: wear sunscreen every single day.

Not just at the beach. Not just in summer. Every day, regardless of the weather or whether you’re planning to go outside.

UV rays penetrate through clouds and windows. They’re present year-round, even on overcast days. They’re the primary cause of premature aging, including wrinkles, age spots, and loss of skin elasticity. And let’s not forget the increased risk of skin cancer as well.

The good news is, this single habit can prevent more visible aging than any anti-aging cream on the market. Sunscreen is literally the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth, and it costs a fraction of what most people spend on skincare.

Make it part of your morning routine, right after moisturizer. Find a formula you actually like wearing, whether that’s a mineral sunscreen, a chemical one, or a moisturizer with SPF built in. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use consistently.

I volunteer at farmers’ markets every Saturday, spending hours outdoors, and sunscreen is non-negotiable for me. It takes 30 seconds to apply in the morning, and it’s protecting my skin from damage that would be expensive or impossible to reverse later.

Final thoughts

None of these habits are glamorous, and you won’t see dramatic results overnight. There’s no before-and-after photo that captures the cumulative effect of drinking enough water or wearing sunscreen daily.

But that’s exactly why they work. These practices compound over time, creating changes that last because they’re built on consistency rather than quick fixes. In six months, in a year, in five years, you’ll see the difference.

The beauty industry wants you to believe that transformation requires constant consumption. But your body already knows how to maintain itself when you give it the basics: movement, rest, nourishment, stress management, protection, and consistency.

Start with one habit. Build it into your routine until it becomes automatic. Then add another. The investment is minimal, but the returns are substantial and lasting.

12 Best skincare brands for men are begging you to ditch that bar of soap

Once upon a time, men’s skincare revolved solely around whatever soap was nearest the sink. Those days are over. Whether you’re a skincare obsessive with a bathroom shelf that looks like a laboratory or a total noob still stealing your partner’s cleanser, consider this your go-to guide to the brands that are genuinely worth your time, money and mirror space.

The skincare boom shows no sign of slowing down. Every week brings another glossy promise of perfect skin – the noise has never been louder. Just casually scrolling your FYP you’ll see it: people trading moisturiser tips like insider gossip, comparing ingredients, and preaching the gospel of SPF moisturisers with good reason. The problem? But it’s not style over substance. The formulas are equally as sophisticated, with antioxidant-rich cleansers, balancing gels and vitamin-packed serums that deliver real results. The Parsley Seed range is a hero, hydrating, fortifying and now a cult classic for city skin that faces pollution and stress. La Mer

La Mer

The Eye Concentrate

La Mer

The Treatment Lotion

La Mer is the most divisive name in skincare – worshipped, side-eyed, and still the one everyone measures against. The price raises eyebrows, but the results usually silence them. The secret lies in its formulas: at the core is the “Miracle Broth,” a slow-fermented blend of sea kelp, minerals and oils that soothes, repairs and drenches dry, stressed-out skin. Cult moisturiser Crème de la Mer remains the benchmark for deep hydration, instantly smoothing and reviving tired faces, while The Eye Concentrate targets fine lines, shadows and dehydration with the same cocooning richness. It’s not for minimalists or spreadsheet budgeters, but if you’re chasing the skincare equivalent of a tailored Tom Ford suit, this is it.

Proof that good skin doesn’t have to cost half your rent, The Ordinary is the brand that’s made skincare feel like science homework – in the best way possible. Its clinical, stripped-back formulas skip the fluff for ingredients that actually work: niacinamide to calm breakouts, hyaluronic acid to hydrate, retinol to smooth. There’s no luxury packaging, no lofty promises, just transparency and results. It’s skincare for the curious, the ones who’d rather read ingredient lists than marketing copy. Learn the labels, master the dropper, and you’ll get why dermatologists and minimalists alike swear by it. Simple, smart, and brilliantly affordable.

CeraVe

Cerave

Resurfacing Retinol Serum

Cerave

Fermented grains: An ancient skincare remedy

Fermented grains: An ancient skincare remedy

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African fermented grains have been used for centuries in traditional skincare practices.
These grains, rich in nutrients and enzymes, are known to promote healthy skin.
The fermentation process enhances their beneficial properties, making them a natural choice for skincare enthusiasts.
From millet to sorghum, these grains offer various benefits that can help improve skin texture and appearance.
Here’s how you can incorporate these natural ingredients into your skincare routine.

Millet: A nutrient powerhouse

Millet is a staple grain in many African countries and is known for its high magnesium content.
Magnesium helps reduce inflammation and supports collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity.
The antioxidants present in millet also protect the skin from free radicals, preventing premature aging.
Using millet-based masks or scrubs can help exfoliate dead skin cells and promote a radiant complexion.

Sorghum: Rich in antioxidants

Sorghum is another versatile grain that is packed with antioxidants such as phenolic compounds.
These antioxidants protect the skin from environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays.
Sorghum flour can be used to make gentle exfoliating scrubs that remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
Regular use of sorghum-infused products can lead to a smoother and more even-toned complexion.

Teff: Hydration booster

Teff, an ancient Ethiopian grain, is famous for its high protein and amino acid content.
These nutrients are essential for repairing damaged skin and retaining moisture.
Teff-based moisturizers or masks can give an extra layer of hydration, making dry or flaky skin look supple.
Its lightweight texture makes it perfect for all skin types, including sensitive ones.

Fonio: Skin brightening agent

Fonio, one of Africa’s oldest cultivated grains, is praised for its high zinc content.
Zinc is a mineral that promotes wound healing and reduces acne breakouts by regulating oil production on the skin’s surface.
Fonio powder can be added to face masks or used as a gentle exfoliant to brighten dull complexions over time with consistent application.

Are dedicated skincare products necessary for your children?

Are dedicated skincare products necessary for your children?

A new skincare brand for children has sparked concern among many parents, who say kids should not be subjected to adult behaviours.

A young girl wearing a clear facial mask for children’s skincare brand Rini/Instagram (@shaymitchell)

Actress Shay Mitchell has launched a skincare brand for children, and moms aren’t too thrilled. Do children really need skincare products?

The ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star caused an outcry online after announcing that her new brand, Rini, will offer dermatologist-tested products for little ones as young as 3.

The celebrity entrepreneur teamed up with her friend, Esther Song, and partner Matt Babel to “nurture healthy habits, spark confidence and make thoughtfully crafted daily care essentials and play products accessible to every family”.

The brand, which is called Rini, kicked off their launch with several hydrogel facial masks, including an ‘After-Sun Hydrogel Facial Mask’.

Mitchell, who has successfully launched brands such as BÉIS and Onda Tequila, told her fans that the brand is inspired by her two daughters, Atlas and Rome.

“This has been three years in the making, inspired by my girls, their curiosity, and all the little moments that made me realize how early it starts,” she wrote on Instagram.

“From birthday parties and face paint to wanting to do ‘what mommy does’ with her face masks… it was only a matter of time. Rini isn’t about beauty it’s about self-care. About teaching our kids that taking care of themselves can be fun, gentle, and safe.”

She also explained how some of the products came about.

“Our first product, the aloe vera recovery mask, actually came from a spring break moment in Mexico when one of the girls got too much sun and needed some extra TLC. I wanted something that worked, but was still clean enough for my kids and now it’s finally here.

Mitchell is not the first celebrity to launch a skincare line. Selena Gomez, Kylie Jenner, Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rihanna, Brad Pitt, August Alsina, and John Legend are all building beauty empires.

However, Mitchell is one of the first to launch a line specifically designed for children. The launch comes hot on the heels of the TikTok trends and ‘Sephora Kid’ trend controversy, which, despite people’s concerns, showed a high demand for children’s skincare.

Videos showed children using products designed for adults, including ones with active ingredients such as retinol. The ingredient is used in anti-ageing skincare products that target wrinkles.

Definitely not something children would be worried about, but their curiosity about skincare was obvious.

“Kids are naturally curious and instead of ignoring that, we can embrace it. With safe, gentle products parents can trust, and sweet moments that bring us closer,” Mitchell concluded her post.

Skincare and children

Over 2,000 people commented on Mitchell’s post. Many felt that promoting a skincare line for children would do more harm than good.

“So yet again we are subjecting little girls (didn’t see a boy on the picture) to adult behaviors. Got it!” one person wrote.

Another Instagram user wrote: “Everything about this is wrong, but also WHY is this AGAIN only focused on little girls?”

“Why can’t we teach boys to take care of themselves? Oh maybe because they might grow into self-aware adults who take care of them & each other,” the user added.

It is essential to note that Rini’s promotional advertisements include both boys and girls.

“Guys! I’m rebranding alcohol and [creating] this super kid-friendly beverage so that kids don’t feel left out when adults are having a glass,” one user commented sarcastically on a Rini post.

“It’s called Not Wine ™ (not – meaning gentle breeze in Japanese – and wine meaning blessing in Korean). This is ridiculous!”

A second person added, “I’m genuinely concerned by this. Kids don’t need hydrogel masks or actives. Their skin barrier is already healthy and still developing. This kind of ‘early skincare’ marketing really blurs the line between care and consumerism. Do better.”

However, not everyone is against the idea. “Y’all find any reason to be upset,” one woman commented.

“How is this different [from] the mom that takes her daughter for a spa day or to get her nails or hair done?! Skin care is something that WE ALL NEED! I wish this was around when I was a kid, maybe I would know how or even care to take care of my skin now…. Or maybe I would even like going to the spa.”

An expert spoke to CHOC’s Children’s Health Hub in 2024 about the viral social media skincare trends.

Pediatric dermatologist Dr Brandie Metz shared some interesting insights on the matter. She said at the time that it was an excellent opportunity to educate the younger generation about skincare and help them build healthy habits.

“I would like to think that there is a positive side to this trend … young people are taking care of their skin earlier and are more willing to adhere to a skincare routine.”

However, she warned that using too many skincare products, especially those containing retinol, Vitamin C, Alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, and peptides, can be harmful to the skin.

Dr Metz suggested that parents encourage their children to stick to simple routines that contain:

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Moisturiser
  • Sunscreen

Many tweens and teenagers start to explore skincare while undergoing puberty, as it can affect their skin, with many developing acne.

Parents should always consider what is age-appropriate and research the products their families use.

It is also advisable to consult a dermatologist or other healthcare experts for advice, especially if your child has eczema, acne, or other skin concerns.
