How to layer winter skincare? Expert tips and common mistakes

How to layer winter skincare? Expert tips and common mistakes

Learn how to layer winter skincare products effectively. Avoid common mistakes and receive expert tips to keep skin hydrated and healthy.

As the air gets colder, many of us prepare to keep our skin hydrated and healthy; however, winter can be particularly harsh on our skin. Lower temperatures and lower humidity can cause dryness, flakiness, and increased sensitivity. It often feels like a losing battle, mainly when you apply thick creams and oils, but still find your skin feeling dry and uncomfortable. What’s going on?

Many people focus on using heavy skincare products. Still, we often overlook an important aspect: how to layer those products correctly. “Learning to layer your winter skincare can significantly help with dryness and can give you a healthy glow”, Dr Anindita Sarkar, Aesthetic Physician and Medical Cosmetologist, tells Health Shots. The correct way to layer your products and why many people get it wrong, based on expert advice from skincare professionals.

What is the primary purpose of layering?

Before we get into how to layer products, let’s talk about why it’s important. Each skincare product has a unique formula, which means it works at various levels and serves specific purposes. “If you don’t apply them in the correct order, you can block absorption and reduce their effectiveness”, says the doctor. Instead of achieving the smooth, hydrated skin you want, you might end up with a greasy feel that actually harms your skin.

What is the correct order of layering winter skincare products?

Let’s discuss the fundamental steps for winter skincare layering. “It’s important to use your products in the correct order”, says Dr Sarkar. This helps each product work well together, rather than against each other.

Apart from soothing your skin, cucumber juice can also help remove makeup. Image courtesy: Adobe Stock

  1. Cleanser: Start your routine with a gentle cleanser that hydrates your skin. “This cleanser should remove dirt and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils”, shares the skin expert. Select a product that cleanses and nourishes your skin simultaneously.
  2. Toner or mist: Next, use an alcohol-free toner or hydrating mist. This step is often overlooked, but it is crucial for maintaining your skin’s pH balance. A good toner prepares your skin for the products you will use next and helps them work more effectively.
  3. Serum: Begin your skincare routine with a lightweight serum rich in ingredients that benefit your skin. “Look for hyaluronic acid, which helps pull moisture into your skin, or niacinamide, which supports your skin’s barrier”, shares the expert. This step enables essential hydration to penetrate deeply into your skin.
  4. Moisturiser: After applying the serum, it’s essential to follow with a moisturising cream. “Choose creams that contain ingredients like ceramides, squalane, or shea butter”, says the aesthetic physician. These ingredients help strengthen your skin’s barrier and retain moisture.
  5. Facial oil (optional): If you have dehydrated skin, consider adding a few drops of non-comedogenic facial oils, such as safflower or rosehip oil. Using oil at this stage can add protection, improve glow, and make your skin feel as good as it looks.
  6. Sunscreen: Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, even in winter! “Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher because UVA rays are always present, no matter the season”, says the medical cosmetologist. Many people think they can skip sunscreen when it’s cold, but UV exposure can cause long-term skin damage.

What are some common skincare mistakes?

Now that we’ve discussed the correct order for layering skincare products, let’s look at some common mistakes that can disrupt your winter skincare routine.

  1. Skipping sunscreen: Many people believe they are safe from UV rays in winter, but this is a big mistake. UV rays can still cause skin ageing and dark spots.
  2. Over-exfoliating: Exfoliating too frequently with acids or scrubs can cause damage to your skin. “It may remove essential oils from your skin barrier, causing further dryness and irritation”, says the cosmetologist. During winter, it’s best to limit exfoliation or opt for gentler methods.
  3. Applying active ingredients to dry skin: Did you know that some ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, work better on slightly damp skin? If you use them to dry skin, they might not work as well, and you could be disappointed with the results.
  4. Layering products too quickly: Give your skin time to absorb each product before applying the next one. If you rush, it can cause your products to clump or irritate your skin, which reduces the benefits of the products you chose.

What is a holistic approach in skincare?

Winter skincare is about finding balance and using products in the correct order, not just piling on more products. By layering your skincare correctly, you help hydration absorb deeply while keeping your skin moist. When you layer your winter skincare products correctly, they can help fight dryness instead of causing frustration. Your skin doesn’t need more products; it needs better balance.

Follow this guide

What’s the story

African okra gel is quickly becoming the go-to skincare secret, thanks to its amazing benefits.
Extracted from the pods of okra, this gel is packed with vitamins and antioxidants that can do wonders for your skin.
From moisturizing to fighting signs of aging, African okra gel has a lot to offer.
Here’s how you can use this natural wonder in your skincare routine.

Moisturizing properties of okra gel

African okra gel is famous for its moisturizing properties. It contains mucilage, a thick, gluey substance that retains moisture.
This makes it an excellent choice for those with dry or dehydrated skin.
By applying the gel regularly, you can keep your skin hydrated and supple without the use of synthetic moisturizers.

Antioxidant benefits for skin health

Packed with antioxidants such as vitamin C and beta-carotene, African okra gel helps protect your skin against environmental damage.
These antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause premature aging and dullness.
Using this gel as part of your skincare routine can help maintain a youthful complexion by reducing oxidative stress on the skin.

Soothing properties for sensitive skin

For sensitive skin prone to irritation or redness, African okra gel offers soothing relief.
Its anti-inflammatory properties calm irritated skin and reduce redness effectively.
This makes it an ideal choice for those looking for gentle yet effective skincare solutions without harsh chemicals or irritants.

Enhancing elasticity with okra gel

African okra gel is rich in vitamins A and E, which are known to improve skin elasticity.
Regular use can help firm up sagging skin by boosting collagen production naturally.
This makes it a great addition to anti-aging routines aimed at keeping the skin firm and youthful-looking over time.

Step Festive Skincare Rituals for a Naturally Radiant Diwali Glow

Step Festive Skincare Rituals for a Naturally Radiant Diwali Glow

As Diwali approaches, preparations are in full swing — from decorating homes to choosing outfits and jewellery. But amidst the festive rush, your skin deserves special care too. After all, no attire shines brighter than naturally glowing skin. With a little attention and consistency, you can achieve that perfect Diwali glow right at home.

Here’s a simple and cost-effective step skincare ritual that detoxifies, hydrates, and rejuvenates your skin, helping it radiate with festive brilliance.

1. Gentle Detox and Exfoliation (2–3 Days Before Diwali)

Begin your Diwali skincare with a mild exfoliation to remove dullness and dead skin cells. Use natural ingredients like multani mitti, oats, rice flour, or coffee for a refreshing scrub. Avoid over-scrubbing to protect your skin barrier. At night, apply a charcoal or clay detox mask for 10–15 minutes, followed by a hydrating toner or essence.

2. Deep Hydration and Nourishment (Daily)

Hydration is the secret to lasting radiance. Use a lightweight serum or essence to lock in moisture and follow up with a moisturizer suitable for your skin type. Don’t forget to pamper your under-eyes with a soothing gel or cream. Stay hydrated internally by drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, or fruit-infused water, and maintain a clean diet rich in fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds.

3. Glow Masks and Sheet Masks (1–2 Times During Festivities)

Keep your skin refreshed with DIY glow masks made from kitchen staples like honey, curd, aloe vera, and turmeric. Sheet masks are perfect for a quick skin revival before makeup or special events.

4. Facial Massage and Lymphatic Drainage (Nightly or Alternate Nights)

Indulge in a relaxing facial massage using your fingertips, a Gua Sha, or a jade roller. Work in upward strokes from the neck to the jawline and cheeks to enhance blood circulation, reduce puffiness, and promote even-toned skin.

5. Skin Protection and Repair (Post-Celebrations)

After late-night celebrations, your skin needs extra love. Double cleanse to remove makeup and pollution residue, then soothe your skin with a calming mask. Finish with a rich night cream or sleeping mask to restore lost moisture. Give your skin a day or two off from makeup for complete recovery.

6. Manage Stress and Prioritize Rest

Festive stress can take a toll on your skin. Practice yoga, meditation, or deep breathing to keep stress levels low and hormones balanced. Ensure adequate sleep to let your skin heal and regenerate naturally.

7. Protect from Smoke and Pollution

With fireworks and festive pollution in the air, protect your skin using an antioxidant facial mist or spray when outdoors. Cleanse immediately after coming home to prevent buildup and irritation.

Final Glow-Up Tip

Consistency is key. Following this 7-step skincare ritual not only enhances your festive glow but also strengthens your skin’s overall health. This Diwali, let your inner light shine through your radiant, healthy skin — because true celebration begins with self-care.

Avoid these skincare mistakes: Tips for a balanced routine

Avoid these skincare mistakes: Tips for a balanced routine

Learn about common skincare mistakes that can harm your skin. How to create a balanced routine that keeps skin healthy without overexertion.

In a world where beauty influencers lead the way and social media influences how we perceive skincare, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the numerous products and trends we encounter online. We often end up buying the newest serums, toners, and oils, believing that using these products will give us the radiant, flawless skin we want. However, there’s a problem: as we seek the perfect glow, we may actually harm our skin by making common skincare mistakes and using too many products.

What are some common skincare mistakes?

Let’s look at three common skincare mistakes and learn how to create a skincare routine that works well for you.

Is more skincare better?

Many people believe that using more skincare products is always better, which is a common skincare mistake. This can be misleading. Applying several strong ingredients, such as retinol, Vitamin C, AHAs, and BHAs, is a good idea for faster results. However, Dr Rupika Singh, Dermatologist, warns that using too many strong ingredients together can harm your skin. “Mixing strong actives can compromise the skin’s natural barrier,” the skincare expert tells Health Shots. This can lead to issues such as redness, increased sensitivity, and breakouts.

Our skin needs balance, not a mix of conflicting ingredients. It can be tempting to try every trending product, but it’s better to find what works for your skin type. Many people make common skincare mistakes by layering too many products. “Instead of using multiple ingredients, simplify your routine with high-quality products that cater to your skin’s specific needs,” explains the doctor. The goal is to nourish and protect your skin, not overwhelm it with too many products.

What happens if you exfoliate too much?

Speaking of products, a particularly popular trend that many enthusiastically embrace is exfoliation. While it’s a vital step in any skincare routine for removing dead skin cells and promoting a healthy glow, over-exfoliation can be detrimental. Dr Rupika Singh emphasises that “striking the right balance is crucial. While exfoliation is beneficial, doing it too frequently, or combining different types, such as physical scrubs with chemical exfoliants, can strip the skin of its essential moisture.” This is one of the common skincare mistakes that can lead to irritation and other skin issues.

The solution to your dry-skin issues is here: some expert advice on how to make the best of them. Image courtesy: Adobe Stock

When your skin becomes irritated and dry due to excessive exfoliation, it can lead to early signs of ageing and disrupt your skin’s moisture balance, which are common skincare mistakes. Instead of trying the latest exfoliation trend, take a step back. Follow a routine that includes gentle exfoliation a few times a week, and pay attention to what your skin is telling you. If you notice sensitivity or irritation, it’s time to change your routine.

What happens if you cleanse too much?

One common skincare mistake in modern routines is “over-care.” In our quest for perfect skin, we may wash our faces too frequently or try multiple toners and serums, hoping for quick results. Dr Singh points out that this quick-switching mindset can lead to problems. “Your skin needs time to adjust to new products. Constantly changing your routine disrupts its balance and can lead to inflammation or breakouts,” she explains.

Many people think their skin issues are due to “purging” when they see it as a necessary detox. In reality, using too many products can make your skin sensitive and reactive, a common mistake in skincare. It’s great to stay up-to-date with the latest skincare information, but remember that using more products doesn’t necessarily mean better care. Skincare should focus on healing and strengthening your skin’s barrier, rather than putting it under stress with excessive product use.

How does social media affect beauty trends?

With so many beauty trends promoted by social media influencers, it can be challenging to determine what works best for your skin. Dr Singh points out that “the sharing of skincare tips on Instagram and TikTok can confuse professional advice with DIY methods,” leading to various skincare mistakes. While trends can help raise awareness, they might not be suitable for everyone. What works for one person may not work for another.

Personalisation is key in skincare. Instead of following the latest trends or making common skincare mistakes, focus on what your skin needs explicitly. A consistent routine based on science will lead to healthier skin over time, rather than trying out every new fad. To find the best skincare plan for your skin, consider talking to a skincare professional.

Shay Mitchell drops skincare for kids. Do they really need it?

Shay Mitchell drops skincare for kids. Do they really need it?

Dermatologist Marisa Garshick said the ingredients in Rini’s face masks are not harsh, but too many ingredients on young skin can lead to irritation and sensitivity.

California considers banning sale of anti-aging products to minors

A California lawmaker introduced a bill that would stop the sale of anti-aging products to children, similar to a bill that failed to pass in 2024.

“Pretty Little Liars” star Shay Mitchell is receiving mixed feedback from parents after releasing a skincare line for children.

Mitchell, known for playing Emily Fields in “Pretty Little Liars,” launched Rini on Nov. 6. The line features face masks for youth aged 4 and up, which she says meets a growing demand of interest in skincare among children.

“So excited (and honestly, so relieved) that I can finally talk about Rini,” Mitchell, a mother of a 6-year-old and 3-year-old, said in an Instagram post introducing the brand. “Kids are naturally curious and instead of ignoring that, we can embrace it.”

However, the launch also comes at a time when parents, dermatologists and lawmakers are expressing caution about children’s use of adult-like products.

In 2024, the “Sephora Kids” trend gained traction on social media, featuring children running through Sephora aisles, shopping for skincare products to try out at home. The number of young creators sharing beauty routines has skyrocketed over the past year.

But not everyone is embracing the idea of skincare for kids.

One Instagram user commented on Mitchell’s post saying kids don’t need “to be sitting in front of a makeup mirror looking at themselves.”

“They should have playing and getting dirty and not caring what their skin looks like at that age. Sigh. This just seems so unnecessary.”

What are the Rini face masks for?

Upon its launch, Rini offers five face masks for children. Here’s a look at how the products are marketed:

  • Hydrating Hydrogel Facial Mask: Pink, shimmery two-piece jelly mask intended to “hydrate, strengthen and soothe” skin ($6.99)
  • After-Sun Hydrogel Facial Mask: Green, shimmery two-piece jelly mask infused with aloe vera and chamomile to “calm, soothe and help skin recover from sun, environmental and post-play stress” ($6.99)
  • Everyday Facial Sheet Masks: 100% cotton masks shaped as a panda, dog and unicorn, used to “hydrate, strengthen and soothe” skin ($5.99)

What are the Rini face masks made of?

Take a look at the ingredient lists for each of the face masks below.

What are people saying about Rini?

Marisa Garshick, a dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology: Medical Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in New York, told USA TODAY that while it is good to acknowledge the importance of skincare, even at a young age, young children don’t need to use face masks. A gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen are all they need, she said.

California dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis took to TikTok to share her frustrations with Rini.

“As a parent of an almost 4-year-old, I just think about, what do I want my kid focusing on at this stage in their life? For not one second do I really want them thinking about the quality of their skin or even taking care of their skin,” Ellis said in her video.

In another TikTok video, creator Ally Nelson described Rini’s marketing materials as “dystopian,” wishing the team used a more “playful, joyful approach.”

USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Mitchell about the backlash but has not yet received a response.

Some content creators chime in with support

But not everyone thinks Rini is all bad.

“As a mom to a five-and-a-half-year-old, I think it’s a brilliant idea. My kid is always trying to do her skincare,” Daisy Jing, founder of at-home micro-needling line Banish, said in a recent TikTok video.

Content creator Isabelle Lux said while she largely agrees with the criticism, she think the brand could provide an opportunity for families to have healthy discussions about beauty standards.

“Girls right now are growing up in a society where this (beauty standards) is so much of value and so much a part of them. Maybe actually allowing them to use skincare as fun with their family and talk about it might actually help open them up to understanding that it is actually not that important, that your entire worth is not locked up in how you look,” Lux said in a TikTok video.

Another TikTok user, who commented on Lux’s video, agreed, providing the American Girl book, “Spa Fun: Pampering Tips and Treatments for Girls” as an example of a well-respected brand introducing such care to young girls.

“I am a ’90s baby. Skincare and spa treatments were always a part of sleepovers when I was a child,” the user commented. “I feel like this brand could’ve existed decades ago. The only thing that is new is the obsession with anti-aging and heightened beauty standards. I don’t think this brand is necessarily engaging in that, but I understand how it can come across as problematic in the current climate.”

Boom in Korean skincare

As outlined by Rini co-founder Esther Son, the brand’s name is derived from “eorini,” which translates to “children” from Korean. And the Rini website states that all products are made in Korea.

Rini is just one U.S.-based skincare brand tapping into Korean skincare, or K-Beauty. Content creator Mikayla Nogueira’s skincare line, Point of View, which was released earlier this year, is also made in Korea.

The boom of K-Beauty in the U.S. is not a new phenomenon but has only grown in popularity with the increase of Korean media, like K-Pop.

Anna Lee, a content creator based in South Korea, said she has been surprised by the amount of backlash Rini has received, as skincare routines for children are common in Korea.

“For Korean moms, using skincare on kids is not a new or foreign concept,” Lee said in a TikTok video. “Kid-safe skincare lines do exist in Korea, so I don’t really personally see a problem with this.”

Are Rini face masks safe for children?

Rini boasts dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic and vegan products.

Garshick said while the ingredients in the Rini face masks are not “necessarily harsh,” and can be safe for occasional use, they are not necessary for routine use.

“Too many ingredients, even if not individually harmful, may still contribute to skin irritation and sensitivity,” she said.
