Why April Rose Pengilly’s wedding fitness routine is going viral

Rose Pengilly: 16,000 steps a day, skin treatments and “bridal discipline”: Why April Rose Pengilly’s wedding fitness routine is going viral

Image credit: instagram/aprilrosepengilly/ Australian actor and model April Rose Pengilly has sparked a massive conversation online after sharing everything she did in the lead-up to her wedding. From walking 16,000 steps every single day to strength training, red light therapy, protein shakes and skincare treatments, her now-viral Instagram post has become part beauty diary, part fitness confession and part reality check. What made people stop scrolling was not just the glamour. It was the honesty.“Honestly, I have to do pretty much all of this regularly anyway,” she wrote, before listing an intense but carefully maintained routine that included RF microneedling, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, cryotherapy, daily planks, vegetarian protein intake and even vein removal treatment. The internet reacted in two very different ways. Some called her a “real-life princess” and praised her discipline. Others wondered whether so much preparation is truly necessary before a wedding. One comment summed it up perfectly: “It’s so helpful for women to see that a lot of work goes into looking this polished.”And perhaps that is exactly why the post resonated. It peeled back the curtain on the modern “bridal glow.”

The 16,000-step routine that became the centre of attention

Among all the treatments and beauty appointments, one detail grabbed the most attention: April Rose Pengilly’s commitment to walking at least 16,000 steps every day. That is significantly higher than the commonly recommended 8,000 to 10,000 daily steps many health experts discuss.A major study published by the National Institutes of Health found that increasing daily step count was linked with lower mortality risk, especially among adults who maintained consistent movement habits. Another study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to recommend regular moderate physical activity for overall health and long-term disease prevention.Pengilly also admitted that an injury flare-up forced her to swap some workouts for a stationary bike. That small detail made the routine feel more grounded and realistic. It showed adaptation instead of perfection. She also mentioned doing four minutes of planks every day, calling it the exercise that “makes the biggest difference.” While planks are often underestimated, they help strengthen the core, posture and back muscles. Fitness trainers have long pointed out that consistency with simple movements often matters more than chasing extreme workouts.

A beauty routine built on maintenance, not magic

The skincare portion of Pengilly’s pre-wedding routine sounded almost clinical in detail. She continued using vitamin B, vitamin C, retinol, sunscreen and nightly LED mask therapy while also undergoing professional treatments including collagen remodelling RF microneedling, Laser Genesis and HIFU tightening procedures. While these treatments are popular in celebrity skincare culture, dermatologists often stress that no treatment replaces the basics: sun protection, hydration, sleep and consistency.Pengilly’s post reflected that idea. Most of what she mentioned was not a one-week crash transformation. It was upkeep. That distinction matters because social media often presents beauty as instant. In reality, many visible changes come from routines repeated quietly over months and years. Her honesty about treatments like vein removal on her legs also opened up a conversation people rarely have publicly. Cosmetic procedures are often discussed in whispers, especially around weddings. By naming them openly, she unintentionally highlighted how modern beauty standards are becoming more transparent, even if they are still incredibly demanding.

Vegetarian protein, supplements and the pressure to “look perfect”

Another part of her routine that struck a chord online was her focus on protein intake “as much as possible for a vegetarian,” along with two dairy-free protein shakes daily.Protein has become one of the biggest wellness conversations globally, especially among women increasing strength training.Still, Pengilly’s post also revealed the exhausting side of wellness culture. Every detail felt optimised. Hair conditioning schedules. Steam room sessions. Teeth whitening maintenance. Brow lamination. Cryotherapy. Nail appointments. Red light therapy. For many readers, the reaction was not jealousy. It was fatigue. One follower joked, “Before my wedding I took a shower and ate a pizza.” Another wrote, “Meanwhile he used one bar of soap for everything.”Those comments landed because they exposed the uneven expectations often placed on women before milestone events. Weddings, especially in the age of Instagram, can quietly become performance spaces where beauty, fitness and perfection are treated like full-time jobs.

The rise of “high-maintenance wellness” on social media

Pengilly’s viral post reflects a much larger shift happening online. Wellness is no longer just about health. It increasingly overlaps with aesthetics, recovery technologies and biohacking culture. That does not mean these routines are fake or ineffective. It simply means they exist at the intersection of wellness, luxury and appearance culture. And that is why Pengilly’s openness mattered. She did not pretend she woke up looking effortlessly radiant. She showed the labour behind the image. In many ways, the internet appreciated the transparency more than the perfection itself.

What people can actually take away from April Rose Pengilly’s routine

The most useful lesson from Pengilly’s wedding preparation is probably not the expensive treatments. It is the consistency underneath them.Daily movement. Strength training. Protein intake. Skincare discipline. Hair care maintenance. Sleep-supporting rituals like steam rooms and baths. These are habits repeated over time, not overnight hacks. But there is another important takeaway too: wellness should not become punishment. Not everyone needs 16,000 steps a day or multiple cosmetic treatments to feel confident. Health routines work best when they improve energy, mobility and mental wellbeing instead of creating constant pressure. The healthiest part of Pengilly’s post may actually have been the honesty. She admitted the work involved. She admitted the injury flare-up. She admitted these routines are ongoing, not magical. That honesty cut through the polished wedding photos and reminded people that beauty often comes with structure, discipline, money, time and support systems many viewers never see.And perhaps that is why the conversation around her routine keeps growing online.Disclaimer: This article is for general informational purposes only and does not replace professional medical, dermatological or fitness advice. Cosmetic procedures, supplements and intensive fitness routines should always be discussed with qualified healthcare professionals before starting.

A Calm, Consistent Path to a Lasting Wedding Glow

A Calm, Consistent Path to a Lasting Wedding Glow

In the run-up to a wedding, skincare often shifts from being a daily habit to a source of pressure. With endless beauty trends, social media “miracle” routines, and last-minute salon promises, many brides feel tempted to chase instant results. Skincare professionals, however, stress that truly radiant bridal skin is not achieved overnight. It is built patiently, through structure, balance, and regular care.

The most effective bridal skincare journeys begin well in advance. Ideally, this means starting at least three to six months before the wedding day. This timeline allows the skin to adapt, repair its natural barrier, and respond steadily to products and treatments. Rushed routines or sudden product changes close to the wedding can often trigger breakouts, sensitivity, or uneven texture—exactly what brides want to avoid.

A strong daily foundation forms the backbone of any successful skincare plan. Gentle cleansing helps remove dirt, excess oil, and pollutants without stripping the skin. Moisturising keeps the skin hydrated and resilient, while sunscreen remains one of the most critical yet underestimated steps. Daily sun protection helps prevent tanning, pigmentation, and premature ageing, all of which can dull the skin’s natural brightness over time.

Experts consistently emphasise that simplicity works better than excess. Rather than layering numerous actives or trying every trending treatment, a consistent routine followed daily delivers more visible and reliable results. Cleanser, toner if needed, moisturiser, sunscreen, and a few well-chosen serums are usually sufficient. Eye care also plays an important role, as fatigue and stress tend to show first around the eyes during busy pre-wedding schedules.

Once the skin is stable and comfortable, targeted treatments can be introduced gradually. Ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, mild exfoliants, or brightening agents can help address concerns like dullness, uneven tone, or pigmentation. The key is moderation. Using strong products too frequently or combining incompatible ingredients can damage the skin barrier, leading to redness or sensitivity.

As the wedding date approaches, skincare routines should become even more minimal. The final few weeks are best spent maintaining hydration, calming the skin, and avoiding experimentation. This phase is about protecting the progress already made. Adequate sleep, balanced meals, and stress management become just as important as topical skincare during this time.

Ultimately, bridal skincare is not about chasing perfection or matching unrealistic beauty standards. Well-prepared skin looks healthy, balanced, and comfortable in its own state. Makeup can enhance the final look, but it cannot replace months of mindful care.

When approached thoughtfully, a bridal skincare routine offers benefits far beyond the wedding day. It helps establish long-term habits that support skin health for years to come, turning pre-wedding preparation into a lasting investment rather than a one-day solution.

A dermatologist's guide to wedding skincare: Expert tips for a natural bridal glow on your big day

A dermatologist’s guide to wedding skincare: Expert tips for a natural bridal glow on your big day

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. From selecting your wedding lehenga to jewellery, picking your hairstyle and getting the makeup right, everything contributes to creating the bridal glow. But in between planning for all these aspects, brides-to-be often end up neglecting skincare.

Get glowing skin on your wedding with these tips(Freepik)

What’s worth not forgetting is that while makeup can enhance your beauty, true glow comes from healthy, nourished skin. The secret to that flawless bridal look is a well-planned skincare routine that starts months before the big day. So, for all those beautiful bride-to-be, here is a quick guide for glowing skin for a bridal look that lasts from the ceremony to the final dance.

Wedding Skincare Guide for brides-to-be

Dermatologist Dr Shweta Tripathi, Co-founder at MySkindom, tells HT ShopNow, “For a wedding glow, it’s better to start way early before your D-day. Apart from skincare, it is also important to stay hydrated and eat well. ”

Start Early — The 3-Month Rule

Bridal glow doesn’t happen overnight. It is something you build with regular care and consistency. “As a dermatologist, I always remind brides to start your skincare routine early, preferably 3-6 months before their wedding. This gives enough time to address issues such as pigmentation, acne scars, uneven skin tone or texture, and to build skin resilience”, says Dr Tripathi.

In case you have breakouts, acne, or pigmentation, you can consult a dermatologist beforehand. She suggests to drink plenty of water (or hydrating fluids like coconut water), and eat an antioxidant-rich diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as these habits will really make the skin look healthy from within. Moreover, try staying away from fried and oily food to avoid acne and breakouts.

Follow the basic CTM routine consistently

Keep your skincare routine simple with basic cleansing, toning, and moisturising (CTM). Maintain consistency by using the products as per your skin type. A consistent skincare routine is much better than applying some last-minute skincare products.

Morning routine:

Cleanser: Use a gentle cleanser to wash off impurities and dirt and prep your skin.

Toner: Make toner your daily BFF as it helps balance pH and tighten pores.

Serum: Use a face serum daily for the ultimate glow. Opt for a vitamin C face serum to boost your glow and even-toned skin

Moisturiser: Choose a moisturiser as per your skin type. A good nourishing cream or moisturiser keeps your skin soft and hydrated throughout the day.

Sunscreen: Never skip using a sunscreen. In fact, this is non-negotiable! Even indoors, SPF protects you from dullness and premature ageing.

Night routine:

Remove makeup: Your skin will thank you for this later. But never forget to remove your makeup. Use a makeup remover wipe or micellar water to clean away your makeup or dirt residue before going to bed.

Exfoliate (2–3 times a week): Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. Exfoliation gently buffs away blackheads and dead cells.

Face Serum: Treat your skin with a face serum at night, too. Retinol or hyaluronic acid face serum helps repair and renew your skin.

Night Cream: Finally, finish your nighttime skincare with a nourishing night cream to lock in hydration while you sleep.

Weekly skin pampering

Your skin deserves at least a weekly dose TLC! Weekly pampering helps maintain that glow and freshness. Go for facials or treatments, or opt for DIY face masks for that glow.

DIY face masks: You can create your own DIY face masks using homemade products. Choose natural ingredients like honey, yoghurt, turmeric, and aloe vera for your skin that can work wonders.

Professional facials: Go for hydrating or brightening facials every 2–3 weeks, but avoid trying anything new too close to the wedding.

Body care: Remember, your glow shouldn’t stop at your face. Scrub, exfoliate, and moisturise your body regularly for even-toned, soft skin.

Tackle specific skin concerns

Every bride has her unique skin story, whether it’s acne, dryness, or uneven tone. You can tackle these skin issues with certain skin ingredients. This gives enough time to address issues such as pigmentation, acne scars, uneven skin tone or texture, and to build skin resilience. Begin to address pigmentation or hair care concerns at least 6 months before the wedding date. For any booster to be injected, go for it at least 1 month before the wedding. And for any laser hair reduction, keep at least an 8-month window.

For acne-prone skin: Choose products with salicylic acid or tea tree oil.

For pigmentation: Vitamin C and niacinamide help fade dark spots.

For dry skin: Look for hydrating ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

For oily skin: Gel-based moisturisers and mattifying toners keep shine in check.

However, consult a dermatologist before using these ingredients.

Don’t forget the basics

No product can replace the power of a healthy lifestyle. Indulge in a healthy lifestyle before your D-Day to glow on the special night.

Sleep enough: Sleep for at least 7–8 hours for that fresh, rested glow.

Stay stress-free: Stress = breakouts. Try yoga, meditation, or simply a walk in the fresh air.

Exercise and burn those calories: Exercise boosts blood circulation, along with burning some fat, and gives you that lit-from-within glow.

The final week countdown

Know that the final few days before the wedding day are not the time to experiment. Rather, just stick to what your skin already loves. “The week before the wedding should be about keeping the skin calm and rested. Your skin regenerates while you sleep — this helps reduce dark circles, puffiness, and dullness. So, get adequate sleep of at least 7–8 hours.”, says Dr Tripathi. She further mentions that when a bride cares for her skin holistically, internally and externally, the makeup doesn’t just sit better, the glow feels effortless and authentic. A combination of discipline, wellness, and confidence is the true essence of bridal radiance.

Expert Tips To Achieve A Luminous Wedding Day Look

Expert Tips To Achieve A Luminous Wedding Day Look

(By Dr. Blossom Kochhar)

For many brides, the wedding day starts long before the first outfit change or the very first photograph. The glow that everyone talks about is not just makeup magic. It comes from how well the skin has been cared for in the weeks leading up to the celebrations. A radiant bridal look is really the result of small habits done regularly and  not something that appears overnight.

Start Early For Noticeable Results

Brides should begin their routine as early as they reasonably can. Even simple steps like cleansing properly, drinking enough water, and sticking to mild products make a visible difference after a few weeks. The skin behaves best when it feels familiar with what is being used on it. Sudden experiments do not help, especially so close to the wedding. A gentle exfoliation once in a while, a good moisturizer, and a serum that suits the skin type are usually enough to restore softness and brightness.

Keep The Routine Gentle And Familiar

Brides should focus on things that support the natural texture of the skin. Vitamin C works well for uneven tone. Hyaluronic acid helps with hydration. Calming botanical ingredients reduce redness when the skin is stressed. Staying away from harsh peels or strong active ingredients right before the big day since the skin may react unpredictably when nerves and exhaustion are high.

A Simple, Effective Wedding Morning Ritual

On the morning of the wedding, keep the routine very simple. A light cleanse, a refreshing toner or mist, and a comfortable moisturiser are usually all that is needed before the makeup artist starts working. Well hydrated skin holds makeup better and looks more luminous without needing too much coverage. Brides who have daytime functions should include sunscreen that blends well and does not create a heavy layer under makeup.

Rest, Wellness, And Mindfulness For Radiance

Rest and wellness matter just as much as products. A calm night’s sleep, less screen time, and light meals can help the skin look healthier. Even a few minutes of slow breathing can ease the tension that often shows up as dullness or puffiness.

True Bridal Radiance Comes From Consistency

True bridal radiance comes from a combination of preparation, consistency, and a relaxed mind. When the skin is cared for in a gentle and steady way, the glow appears naturally and stays through every moment of the wedding day.

Winter Wedding Skincare: Expert Tips for Glowing Skin

Winter Wedding Skincare: Expert Tips for Glowing Skin

LA Times Studios may earn commission from purchases made through our links.

As the winter wedding season approaches, it’s just as important to prepare your skin as it is to plan the events themselves. The combination of cold outdoor air and dry indoor heat could wreak havoc on your complexion, leaving it dull or dehydrated if not cared for properly. With the right seasonal adjustments—and some advance planning—your skin can stay healthy and radiant through the colder months so it’s photo-ready when the big day finally arrives.

We consulted leading experts to gather the most effective cold-weather skincare tips. These tried and tested recommendations will help you navigate the season’s harsh elements and ensure your complexion looks fresh when it’s time to walk down the aisle (or even just attend as a guest).

How to Keep Wedding Skin Hydrated in Winter

According to the experts we asked, the most common skincare issue in the winter months is the lack of hydration. The cold winter air and dry indoor heat draw moisture from the skin, making it look lifeless and dull. Skincare specialists advise incorporating products with humectants, substances that help attract and retain moisture.

“The key is to layer hydration strategically,” explains Diana Choi, skincare expert and founder of Vibes of Grace. “Start with a serum or essence packed with humectants like hyaluronic acid, panthenol and glycerin to draw in moisture, then seal it in with a richer cream or balm. Look for ingredients such as ceramides and squalane or lightweight oils like jojoba and grapeseed that nourish deeply without clogging pores,” she notes.

Best Winter Facials for Brides and Grooms

In addition to daily hydration, skincare specialists suggest opting for hydrating facials for an extra dose of moisture.

“The key is to start prepping four to six weeks before the big day and to focus on barrier repair and hydration,” advises Dr. Bindu Sthalekar, celebrity dermatologist and founder of Skin Smart Solutions. “Brides and grooms could consider hydrating facials or skin boosters a week prior for that dewy, plump finish. Most importantly, don’t experiment with new products close to your wedding, consistency is your real glow-up,” she emphasizes.

How Hydrating Treatments Prep Skin for the Big Day

Moreover, they also recommend going for an exfoliating facial and pairing it with a hyaluronic acid infusion. These procedures help give your complexion a radiant boost in a short amount of time.

“One of my favorite treatments to begin with is the DiamondGlow Facial,” shares Dr. Sanya Arora, co-owner and medical director at Forever Young Complete Health Care & Med Spa. “Unlike standard facials, this treatment exfoliates, extracts and infuses medical-grade serums directly into the skin. In the winter months, I always recommend pairing it with a hyaluronic acid infusion. It restores suppleness and luminosity while strengthening the barrier for the colder climate,” she explains.

Why a Humidifier Helps Your Makeup Look Better

According to experts, using a portable humidifier while getting ready is a must. This small detail could make a big difference to your overall look.

“Bring a humidifier to your hotel room and run it constantly starting 48 hours before the wedding,” recommends Shani Gailbreath, hair and makeup creative director at Shani Gailbreath. “Hotel heating systems pump dry, recycled air that strips moisture from your skin overnight. If you’re getting ready in a hotel, a portable humidifier is non-negotiable. The difference in how your skin looks and how makeup sits on it is immediate.”

Targeted Skin Treatments for Acne and Pigmentation

If you have specific skincare issues such as acne or pigmentation, experts advise opting for targeted procedures such as PDRN with microneedling.

“For brides and grooms with compromised or stressed skin, especially those who have struggled with acne scars, redness or dull texture, PDRN microneedling is transformative,” observes Dr. Arora of Forever Young. “PDRN or Polydeoxyribonucleotide is derived from salmon DNA and works to regenerate tissue, improve microcirculation and boost collagen production. When performed in a structured series before the wedding, it rebuilds the skin’s foundation, leaving it firmer, smoother and more luminous without the downtime of more aggressive treatments,” she continues.

When to Stop Retinoids Before a Winter Wedding

Moreover, skincare specialists recommend discontinuing the use of potent products such as retinoids that can actually dry out your skin in the winter months.

“Stop using Tretinoin or prescription-strength retinoids at least three weeks before your wedding,” cautions make-up artist Gailbreath. “Tretinoin compromises your moisture barrier and leaves skin vulnerable to flaking and irritation in cold weather. When you layer makeup over retinoid-treated skin in winter, foundation clings to dry patches and cream products absorb unevenly, leaving you with a patchy finish. Pause it three to four weeks out and switch to a gentler routine focused on hydration.”

Essential Lip Care for Cold Weather Weddings

While many brides-to-be understand they need to take care of their skin, one area that is often overlooked is the lips, particularly in the winter months.

“The skin on your lips is the thinnest and most sensitive compared to anywhere else on your body,” explains Dr. Robin Smith of Exoceuticals. “Make sure your lips stay protected, well hydrated and wedding-ready for the premier ‘you may kiss the bride’ moment!”

How to Prep Winter-Dry Body Skin for Events

While it’s natural with photos in mind to spend most of your focus on your face and lips, also pay attention to the skin on the rest of your body, which tends to be extra dry in the winter months.

“Opt for a luxurious chocolate body scrub that gently exfoliates dry skin while activated charcoal draws out impurities, followed by a nourishing body wrap that seals in moisture and leaves the skin silky and radiant,” recommends Imna Kumla, spa manager at Anantara Jewel Bagh Jaipur. “Follow it with a hot stone massage that combines the warmth of volcanic stones with aromatic oils, relaxing muscles, improving circulation and deeply nourishing dry winter skin.”

Rest and Stress Relief for a Natural Wedding Glow

Furthermore, while you incorporate all these skincare procedures and tips, also remember to de-stress and rest before your wedding celebrations.

“As a planner, I always remind my couples that the real wedding glow starts long before the big day. Skincare isn’t just about products, it’s hydration, rest and managing stress in those final weeks of planning,” reflects Martina Asgari-Majd, founder of Parisa Social Events. “When couples prioritize feeling good on the inside, it naturally shows on the outside. The calm, refreshed energy they bring truly sets the tone for the entire celebration.”

Winter Skincare Mistakes to Avoid Before a Wedding

Lastly, experts suggest keeping things simple and not overdoing it. Over-treatment could make your skin worse than before.

“In winter, restraint is therapeutic. Avoid aggressive exfoliants or deep chemical peels as a compromised barrier heightens the risk of post-inflammatory erythema,” concludes Dr. Gagan Raina, cosmetologist and aesthetic medicine specialist at Arisia Skin Clinic. “Sustainable radiance stems from physiologically balanced, well-hydrated skin, not over-treatment.”

7-Step Simple Skincare Routine For A Flawless Glow Through Every Wedding Function

The wedding season is all about celebrations, merrymaking and an endless list of functions. But between the celebrations, everyday makeup, late nights and photo clicking, don’t forget about your skin as it may show signs of stress or fatigue. When you keep a simple routine skincare regime that is simple, you can achieve a healthy glow all throughout the wedding season. Let us explore a seven-step skincare plan that helps to keep the skin calm, radiant and photo-ready.

7-Step Simple Skincare Routine For A Flawless Glow Through Every Wedding Function

Double cleansing of the face

A single face wash is never sufficient when we apply makeup regularly and get exposed to high levels of pollution. Begin by using a gentle oil or micellar water for cleansing the face and removing foundation, sunscreen or dirt. The next step is using a mild foam-based cleanser to remove the remaining residue. This keeps the skin pores clear and prevents breakouts.

Toner or mist

Long days and late nights can dehydrate the skin. A refreshing toner or facial mist balances your skin’s pH and instantly perks up dullness. Look for ingredients like rose water, hyaluronic acid, or green tea to calm and hydrate.

Radiant shine giving serum

Add a Vitamin C or niacinamide serum in the morning to brighten and even out your complexion. These antioxidants help fight dullness and protect against free radical damage from makeup, lights and long outdoor events.

Generous moisturization

Whether your skin is oily or dry, moisturiser is non-negotiable. Use a lightweight gel in the daytime and a nourishing cream at night. This helps maintain elasticity and ensures your makeup sits flawlessly.

Sunscreen both indoors and outdoors

From haldi mornings to cocktail nights, you’ll face harsh lighting, camera flashes, and sun exposure. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ protects against tanning, pigmentation, and premature ageing. Reapply every few hours during daytime functions.

Instant glow with sheet masks

The secret to last-minute radiance! Keep a few hydrating sheet masks handy. Use one before your makeup routine; it preps your skin, reduces puffiness, and gives that dewy glow brides (and guests!) love.

Quality sleep, hydration and clean pillow covers

This trio is the ultimate hack for flawless skin – adequate glasses of water, 6-7 hours of sleep and changing pillowcases every 2-3 days. It keeps acne at bay and helps the skin heal naturally overnight.

Just be mindful of avoiding any new treatments or skin actives just before the wedding day because experimenting can turn out to be bad. Opt for gentle and hydrating products, after doing a patch test, and you get a timeless bridal glow!

Achieve flawless, smudge-proof wedding makeup that lasts all day!

Achieve flawless, smudge-proof wedding makeup that lasts all day!

Lifestyle Desk

14 November 2025, 08:07 PM IST

A long day of wedding rituals can test even the most flawless makeup, but a few strategic techniques can keep your look intact from the varmala to the final farewell.

Wedding days often involve long hours, humidity, outdoor rituals and constant movement — all of which can cause makeup to smudge, fade or turn patchy. Even a perfectly applied base in the morning can lose its finish after hours of heat, food, sweat and photography. The key to long-lasting makeup lies in proper skin preparation, controlled layering and the use of stay-put formulas that withstand long wear.

Beauty experts consistently note that long-lasting makeup begins with a well-prepared base. A combination of balanced skincare, strategic priming and smart product choices makes the difference between a look that melts away by afternoon and one that stays fresh throughout multi-hour festivities.

Below are the five essential techniques, along with added practical tips that work for Indian wedding conditions, where humidity, crowding and extended ceremonies are common.

1. Prep and prime for a smooth canvas

Start by cleansing and moisturising your skin to create an even surface. Allow skincare to settle before applying a primer suited to your skin type — mattifying for oily skin and hydrating for dry or normal skin.

Do not skip the lips and eyes: exfoliate and moisturise your lips, and prep eyelids with an eyeshadow primer to prevent creasing, dulling and oil build-up. Good preparation allows the rest of the makeup to adhere better and last much longer.

Extra useful tip:

If the weather is humid, choose lightweight gel moisturisers and avoid heavy creams which can cause sliding.

2. Layer makeup in thin, buildable steps

Heavy application tends to crack, separate or become patchy over several hours. Instead, apply foundation in thin layers and blend using a damp sponge for a natural finish.

Use cream contour and blush first, then set lightly with translucent powder. This dual-layer method sets colour without looking cakey and increases staying power.

Extra useful tip:

For oily T-zones, let each layer rest for 20–30 seconds before applying the next. This prevents the product from lifting.

3. Lock everything in place

Setting is crucial. After completing your look, apply translucent powder only on areas prone to oil — typically the forehead, around the nose, and the chin.

Finish with a long-wear setting spray to seal the makeup. This step helps makeup resist sweat, humidity and friction from clothing or hugging.

Extra useful tip:

Using a setting spray before and after foundation can create a double-seal effect that lasts longer during outdoor ceremonies.

4. Choose waterproof and smudge-proof formulas

Indian weddings often involve heat, emotional moments and packed dance floors, making waterproof makeup a necessity. Use waterproof mascara, long-wear eyeliners and smudge-proof Kajal to avoid under-eye smudging and streaks.

Lip stains or long-wear lipsticks survive meals better than creamy formulas.

Extra useful tip:

Apply a thin layer of concealer on the eyelids before eyeliner. It absorbs oil and reduces smudging.

5. Carry a compact touch-up kit

Even the best makeup occasionally needs a quick refresh. Keep blotting papers, a small pressed powder, your lip colour and a mini setting spray in your clutch. Blot oil instead of adding layers — this prevents caking and maintains a clean finish.

Extra useful tip:

If lipstick fades unevenly, dab the tip of your finger into the product, press it onto the lips and blend — it looks natural and takes seconds.
