Glow Like The Christmas Lights: Expert Skincare Hacks For Winter Festivities | Lifestyle News

Last Updated:December 23, 2025, 15:46 IST

Aesthetic experts share winter skincare tips to combat dryness, dullness, and dehydration during Christmas and New Year celebrations for healthy, glowing skin.

Cold air, low humidity, indoor heating, late nights, and heavy makeup can quickly dull that holiday glow, unless your skincare routine rises to the occasion.

Christmas and New Year are nothing short of magical. Streets glow with fairy lights, playlists turn festive, calendars fill up with parties, and every evening feels like an occasion worth dressing up for. But while the season lifts our spirits, winter quietly takes a toll on our skin. Cold air, low humidity, indoor heating, late nights, and heavy makeup can quickly dull that holiday glow, unless your skincare routine rises to the occasion.

According to Dr Milli Sinha, Aesthetic Physician at La Clinique and expert, Oteria, winter festivities significantly weaken the skin’s natural defence system. “The skin barrier breaks down more easily during winter due to low humidity, cold temperatures, and prolonged indoor heating,” she explains. “This leads to increased water loss, dehydration, and sensitivity. Add late-night parties and heavy makeup to the mix, and the skin’s natural recovery cycle gets disrupted making it look dull and fatigued.”

Her advice? A routine rooted in gentle cleansing, barrier repair, antioxidants, and consistent hydration to restore skin strength and maintain a healthy glow through the festive season.

Echoing this sentiment, Pravin Bera, co-founder, Dr Rashel, highlights the importance of season-appropriate skincare. “Winter festivities often mean longer nights, heavier makeup, and frequent exposure to cold weather, all of which can dehydrate the skin and affect its texture,” he says. “Keeping the routine simple, gentle, and hydration-focused is key to preventing dullness, congestion, and sensitivity.”

With expert-backed insight guiding the way, here are festive-season skincare hacks to help you glow as bright as the Christmas lights.

1. Double Cleanse, Don’t Over-Cleanse

After long days of party makeup, sunscreen, and winter pollution, cleansing should feel like care not punishment. Start with a nourishing oil or balm cleanser to dissolve makeup and grime, followed by a gentle, hydrating face wash. Ingredients like white tea offer antioxidant protection, soothe inflammation, and help keep fine lines and pigmentation in check—leaving skin clean, calm, and luminous.

2. Hydration Layering Is Non-Negotiable

Winter calls for more than a single moisturising step. Adopt the “skin flooding” technique by layering hydration: begin with a hydrating toner or essence, follow with a hyaluronic acid serum, and seal it in with a cream enriched with ingredients like horse chestnut seed extract to support microcirculation and skin vitality.

3. Antioxidants Are Your Festive Shield

Late nights, indulgent meals, and pollution increase oxidative stress. Vitamin C, niacinamide, and green tea extracts work overtime to brighten dull skin, even out tone, and protect against environmental damage ensuring your glow stays uninterrupted throughout the celebrations.

4. Mist to Instantly Revive Your Glow

Skip heavy touch-ups and keep a lightweight hydrating mist in your bag. A quick spritz refreshes makeup, soothes dryness, and revives tired skin instantly perfect for long evenings, packed schedules, and back-to-back celebrations.

5. Night Repair Is Where the Glow Builds

Winter nights are prime time for skin recovery. Use barrier-repairing night creams with retinol to support collagen production and firmness. Pair this with an under-eye serum infused with sweet orange and brown algae to reduce puffiness and signs of fatigue. This post-party ritual helps skin bounce back from late nights, rich food, and cold air, so you wake up looking rested and radiant.

Festive skincare isn’t about excess, it’s about intention. With the right balance of hydration, protection, and repair, your skin can stay calm, resilient, and luminous all season long. After all, the best festive glow isn’t just makeup-deep, it starts with healthy, well-cared-for skin.

herbal tea benefits

Delicious Herbal Tea Recipes and Their Benefits

Herbal teas are a delicious and easy way to boost fluid intake and sneak in some extra nutrients. Unlike coffee and other teas that have caffeine, herbal tea benefits the body without keeping you awake or jittery. And while I love healthy coffee, I don’t drink it every day. Instead, I keep a big pitcher of herbal tea in my fridge to always have on hand.

There are thousands of herbal tea recipes, so there’s something for every palate. Herbal teas can be very inexpensive if you buy the ingredients in bulk and you can mix up your own combinations!

Whether you’re already an avid herbal tea drinker or curious, here are some delicious combinations to try.

1. Iced Dandelion Lime Tea

Dandelions are high in a variety of nutrients and are a great addition to recipes, including tea. Dandelion lime tea is a refreshing way to get the benefits. This recipe also includes raspberry leaf for even more nutrition and stevia for sweetness. Be sure to remove the petals from the green base to avoid a bitter flavor.

2. Chamomile

Sweet and simple, chamomile flower is one of the most popular teas worldwide. Chamomile flowers have a naturally sweet taste with a hint of apple flavor. It’s known for its calming and soothing properties and has a variety of vitamins and minerals.

While it’s often nicknamed the children’s herb thanks to its gentle nature, chamomile is still a powerful ally to keep on hand. I’ve used it for sleep, colicky babies, and even pink eye. Try it as a tincture for a longer shelf life.

3. Mint

Peppermint tea soothes the digestive tract and can be helpful for nausea, and indigestion. Some people find it helps with acid reflux, while others find it irritates their reflux. Hot peppermint tea stimulates circulation and helps open the airways. I drink it daily in early pregnancy to help alleviate nausea and use it in my homemade digestive tincture.

Mint is also known as an “activator herb” that helps boost the effectiveness of other herbs in a blend.

4. Raspberry Leaf

Raspberry leaf is my favorite tea and I drink it almost daily. It’s highly nutritious and especially beneficial for women as it helps balance hormones and is good for the skin. It’s also popular during pregnancy to strengthen the uterus and is a good source of vitamins and minerals pregnant mamas need.

It tastes similar to black tea and I like mixing it with stevia leaf to make a naturally sweet tea. I drink it hot in the winter and cold during the summer months and my kids like it iced (and sometimes with chia seeds in it). Herbalists often recommend raspberry leaf tea or tincture to women suffering from infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, or painful menses.

5. Sleep Easy Blend

My go-to tea when I’m having trouble sleeping is an equal mixture of chamomile, mint, and catnip herbs. Catnip is naturally relaxing and soothing. It’s also one of the ingredients in my Sweet Dreams Sleep Tincture, to help the whole family relax and sleep better, especially during illness.

To make it, mix one teaspoon each of chamomile, mint, and catnip herbs in 16 ounces of hot water. Steep for 5 minutes, then strain and drink.

6. Lavender Tea

Lavender is my favorite scent and essential oil but it’s too strong to be used alone in a tea. Lavender is calming, relaxing, and helps with better sleep. My favorite lavender tea recipe is:

Mix all and store in an airtight container. Use 1-2 tsp per cup of water to make hot or iced tea.

7. Chai Tea

Chai tea is a favorite around our house and we usually make it with raspberry leaf tea instead of black tea and with coconut milk instead of regular milk. Here’s my basic recipe but play with the ingredients to see what spices you like.

When I don’t feel like making my own, I love this caffeine free Firefly Chai that’s slightly sweeter than regular chai and is great for nighttime. Add some chamomile and catnip for a delicious evening drink for kids.

8. Herbal Coffee

Have trouble kicking the coffee habit? While I still love coffee, herbal coffee is a great caffeine-free alternative. Sip Herbals is a robust, earthy herbal tea that’s reminiscent of your favorite cuppa Joe. Made with clean ingredients like chicory, carob, and dandelion root.

9. Stomach Soother Herbal Tea

For stomach aches or for those prone to digestive troubles, this is my go-to tea recipe. Plus it’s easy to make. Mint stimulates digestion, fennel helps expel gas, and ginger combats nausea.

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the herbs, steep, covered for 5 minutes, then strain and drink. You can also add a tablespoon of  grass-fed gelatin powder for extra gut soothing.

10. Pregnan-Tea

During pregnancy I drink a special tea to helps keep nausea and digestive troubles at bay and strengthen the uterus. The nettle also provides vitamin K, an essential nutrient for pregnancy and birth to help with clotting.

Many women report having easier and faster labors from using this tea. My labors are typically 24+ hours even though I go natural, so I may not be the best example! This tea is delicious anytime, but especially during pregnancy.

Mix and use 1 Tablespoon per 8 ounces or 1 cup per gallon. Here’s another pregnancy tea recipe I like to make with even more nutrient rich herbs.

11. Nursing Mama Tea

Another favorite to have on hand during pregnancy and postpartum. The herbs in this tea soothe digestion, boost milk supply, and supply much needed nutrition. Get the recipe here.

12. Herbal Wassail Tea

Wassail is a festive drink our family (and many others!) love to drink during the holidays. My herbal wassail version has a base of herbal tea with added fruit and spices. Make a big batch for guests or to keep in the fridge!

13. Iced Lavender Peach Tea

I’ve already mentioned how much I love lavender tea, but it’s worth bringing up again. This lavender peach tea is refreshing and delicious to have on hand in the warmer months. A great way to upgrade your sweet tea.

14. Elderberry Tea

I’m known for my elderberry syrup recipe, but I also enjoy making elderberry tea. It has all of the same benefits and flavors, but in tea form. Great for cold and flu season.

15. Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel Tea

Probably not something you’ve tried before, but this tea blend is one of my favorites for improving digestion. It helps expel excess gas and is also good for nausea or constipation. Try the recipe here.

16. Calendula Tea

While I love calendula flowers in soothing salves and skincare, it’s equally as good internally. Calendula tea is soothing to the digestive tract and the gut lining. I’ve grown calendula for a long time, but I also buy it in bulk.

What’s your favorite herbal tea? Do you make any of your own? Share below!

A Complete Guide To Building A Bridal Skincare Routine That Truly Works | Beauty News

A Complete Guide To Building A Bridal Skincare Routine That Truly Works | Beauty News

Last Updated:December 23, 2025, 11:12 IST

From expert-backed timelines to daily routines and professional treatments, here’s how brides can build a skincare routine that delivers healthy, radiant skin before the big day

Dermatologists and skincare experts agree on one thing, however: effective bridal skincare is not about speed, but about structure, consistency, and restraint.

In the months leading up to a wedding, skincare often becomes a source of anxiety rather than self-care. Between social media trends, last-minute facials, and product overload, many brides chase instant glow, only to end up with stressed or reactive skin. Dermatologists and skincare experts agree on one thing, however: effective bridal skincare is not about speed, but about structure, consistency, and restraint.

Start Early, Not Urgently

According to O3+ Professional experts, a bridal skincare routine should ideally begin at least three months before the wedding. This window allows the skin enough time to respond naturally, strengthen its barrier, and show lasting improvement rather than short-lived radiance. “Skincare needs time to work at a cellular level,” they emphasise, adding that rushed routines often result in irritation or uneven results.

Echoing this, Snigdha Suman, General Manager, Marketing & Business Development, Avon, recommends starting even earlier. “One of the most common mistakes brides make is beginning their skincare journey too close to the wedding,” she explains. “Skincare is not an overnight fix, it requires time, consistency, and the right regimen.” Ideally, she suggests beginning five to six months in advance to allow the skin to heal, build resilience, and reveal natural radiance.

Build the Foundation First

All three experts agree that no advanced treatment can compensate for a weak daily routine. The foundation of bridal skincare lies in gentle cleansing, moisturisation, and sun protection.

O3+ Professional highlights daily cleansing as the first essential step, recommending the O3+ Bridal Radiance Facewash to keep the skin clean, balanced, and prepared for further care. Sun protection is equally non-negotiable during the pre-wedding phase. “Using an SPF like the O3+ Bridal Radiance Sunscreen SPF 50 helps protect against tanning, pigmentation, and uneven tone,” their experts note.

Shaily Mehrotra, CEO & co-founder, Fixderma, reinforces the importance of sunscreen, calling it “one of the most overlooked yet critical steps in any bridal routine.” She points out that sun exposure is a major cause of pigmentation, premature ageing, and dullness, issues many brides try to correct too late.

Consistency Over Complexity

While the beauty market offers countless treatments and actives, experts caution against doing too much. “The golden rule of effective skincare is consistency,” says Snigdha Suman. A simple but disciplined routine, cleansing, toning, moisturising, sun protection, supported by serums and eye care delivers far better results than sporadic treatments or last-minute facials.

At Avon, this long-term philosophy is reflected in the ANEW range, designed to support skin health over time. Ingredients like patented Protinol, combined with niacinamide and vitamin C, help boost collagen, improve firmness, and even out skin tone without the irritation often associated with traditional retinol. “The goal is resilient skin, not reactive skin,” adds Suman.

Introducing Treatments and Targeted Care

Shaily Mehrotra advises a similar phased approach. Once the skin barrier is stable, targeted ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, or mild exfoliants can be introduced but only in the right concentrations and with patience. “Overuse can do more harm than good,” she cautions, stressing the importance of gradual integration rather than aggressive correction.

The Final Weeks: Less Is More

As the wedding draws closer, experts unanimously recommend simplifying the routine. “The final weeks are not the time to experiment,” says Mehrotra. Instead, the focus should shift to hydration, barrier repair, calming ingredients, and adequate rest. Stress, lack of sleep, and long schedules can quickly reflect on the skin, making eye care and lifestyle balance just as important as topical products.

Glow That Lasts Beyond the Wedding

Ultimately, bridal skincare is not about perfection or chasing unrealistic standards. As Snigdha Suman puts it, “Makeup may elevate the final look, but it is healthy, well-prepared skin that truly defines a bride’s glow.” When approached thoughtfully, a bridal skincare routine doesn’t just deliver beautiful wedding photographs, it builds skin health that lasts long after the celebrations end.

Or, as O3+ Professional experts conclude, consistency and structure are what help brides achieve healthy, even-toned, naturally radiant skin not just for one day, but for the years that follow.

21 Beauty Lessons To Learn And Live By, According To NZ Experts

21 Beauty Lessons To Learn And Live By, According To NZ Experts

Nine New Zealand tastemakers share the beauty lessons passed down through generations, the wellness practices that draw on heritage, and the daily rituals they use to stay calm, grounded and connected.

Rachel Soo Thow

Freelance writer, book enthusiast and content creator @thelitlist__

You don’t need

Listen to your skin. You don’t need to follow the same skincare routine every night. If your face is feeling dry, hydrate with face oils and moisturisers to provide that extra hydration. If it’s feeling oily, use a lighter gel moisturiser. You are the only one inhabiting this body, nourish it.

Sunscreen is always a non-negotiable. Japanese sunscreens are so, so good – not only are they super light but your makeup application will thank you as they act in part as the best primer for makeup.

Sleep is your best friend. While some of us may not get the full 8.5 hours, embrace it. Turn off all screens and be present. Rested. At ease. Your mood tomorrow will thank you.

The best piece of advice I’ve been given lately: Stress kills gratitude. Rushing kills presence. Fear kills possibility.

(Now read that backwards).

Lucy Slight

Beauty and lifestyle journalist, certified personal stylist @lucyslight

Keep it simple, stay consistent. If you’ve ever found yourself on #beautytok, you’ll know that skincare trends are constantly changing, with new ingredients being hyped every time you scroll. But the most enduring advice when it comes to skincare is that a simple routine practised consistently will do more for your skin than any fleeting trend. When you give your skin stability with an at-home routine that consists of products suited to your skin type, that’s when you’ll find harmony (and a happy skin barrier).

Experiment! Everything washes off. Beauty should be playful, not precious, and I’m reminded of this every time I attend a makeup launch or receive a new set of colourful lipsticks or eyeliners. Knowing that a bold lip or a quirky eyeliner can be wiped away in an instant gives you freedom to experiment and get creative – something that’s impossible to do when you’re aiming for perfection. Some of my favourite beauty looks have come from these low-stakes trials and taking a chance on something a little out of my comfort zone.

Dan Ahwa

Honour your heritage. When it comes to anything wellness related, I tap into my Chinese heritage for guidance. For example, a morning routine is really important to start your day right. Something I have consistently done over the years is drinking warm water first thing in the morning. This allows me to set up my digestive system for the day, promote circulation and detoxification while balancing yin and yang, the latter playing a big part in my sense of calmness.

Stack your morning habits. Another Eastern wellness routine that I swear by comes from both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, tongue scraping. I do this before I brush my teeth with a bronze tongue scraper, and it just feels like I’m taking that extra step to ensure I start the day right.

Don’t forget your feet. Every six months, I also get a Chinese pedicure and reflexology massage. It’s important to take care of your feet as you age, and this very simple combination of scraping dead skin and massaging the pressure points of your feet is actually a vital part of overall health and wellbeing.

Tessa Stockdale

Wellness comes from within. What you give to your body, it will give you back. Drink two litres of water a day, nourish with whole foods, touch some grass and of course, drink your matcha.

Nothing protects, preserves and future-proofs like SPF. Your face and neck are a given, but don’t miss the back of your hands. Your 60-year-old self will thank you.

Spend where the change happens. Cleansers and moisturisers are your support crew. Serums are what will drive the results.

Sarika Patel

Freelance makeup artist, Viva Beauty Awards 2025 judge and shade matching expert @ssarika

Skin prep is non-negotiable. The one piece of beauty advice that has stuck with me came early in my career from the M.A.C greats – Amber D, James Molloy and the other incredible artists. I learned that achieving a radiant, second-skin finish starts long before you pick up a foundation brush. Proper hydration, priming and preparation (both internal and external) is what separates makeup that melts into your skin, enhancing what’s already there, from makeup that sits on top looking cakey and making it hard to blend.

Tanne Snowden

The body keeps the score, even in beauty. The moment I started using high-quality active ingredients on my arms, legs and chest, everything changed. My skin tone evened out and I felt more confident in my own texture. It made me realise that taking care of your body is deeply emotional, not just cosmetic. Treating the body holistically creates the kind of all-over glow you can’t get from facial skincare alone.

Wellness shows up on your skin before it shows up anywhere else. A nutritionist told me that your skin is usually the first to report back on stress, sleep and hormones. Dullness, breakouts, inflammation – they often speak louder than any lab result. It taught me to treat skincare and wellness as teammates, not separate categories.

Treat your neck and chest as part of your face. I ignored that area for years until extending my skincare downward became a ritual, and honestly, it’s one of the changes that made the biggest visible difference. It feels like taking care of future me.

Mary Outram

A swipe of lipstick will always make you feel polished. My mum always told me that my grandmother Mary (who I was named after) would never go into town without her lipstick on… even though she lived rurally on a farm. My mum passed that little ritual down to me, not as something over the top, but as a simple way to feel a bit more polished. Most days I don’t wear makeup, but I always brush up my brows, wear a touch of something on the lip, and let my BONNIE GLOW Gradual Tanning Face Drops and moisturiser do the rest. Lately, I’ve been loving M.A.C’s Soar Lip Liner paired with the YSL Love Shine Lipstick in Shade: 200 Rosy Sand, or a slick of the Hair Candy Lip Gloss.

Danny Pato (MNZM)

Award-winning hairstylist, co-founder of D&M Hair Design and 2025 recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit @dannypatohair

In summer, use a leave-in conditioner to hydrate and protect your hair from dryness, breakage and colour fade. You can then style it sleek and chic: centre or side part, slick back to the nape and secure in a chignon. Or for a loose beachy wave look, apply before bed and loosely braid, taking them out in the morning. The Rolls-Royce leave-in conditioner I recommend is the new Davines Beautiful Things Leave-In Mask, a healing and nourishing biotech treatment that protects from UV and heat.

Sara Higgins

Skin health is a reflection of internal wellbeing. Supporting gut function, managing stress and nourishing the body consistently have the greatest impact on how skin looks and feels. When the inside is cared for, the glow follows naturally.

Hydrate the fascia, not just the body. This has stayed with me as a guiding principle. Gentle movement incorporating bowspring, regular massage (daily self-massage and from a therapist when I can), and proper hydration keep everything supple and connected. When the fascia is nourished, the whole body moves and feels better.

Which body lotion is best for dry skin? 8 top-rated hydrating options on Amazon to keep your skin soft and smooth

Which body lotion is best for dry skin? 8 top-rated hydrating options on Amazon to keep your skin soft and smooth

Body lotion becomes especially important as winter sets in and skin starts feeling tight, itchy, or flaky. Cold air outside and constant indoor heating reduce humidity, which slowly strips away the skin’s natural lipid barrier. This barrier is responsible for holding moisture and protecting skin from external irritants. Once it weakens, water loss increases, leading to cracks, rough skin and sensitivity.

Dry skin fix: Hydrating body lotions that keep skin soft and comfortable. (Adobe Stock )

Seasonal changes call for a shift in skincare priorities. Lightweight summer formulas may no longer provide enough support, making stronger moisture protection necessary. Body lotions are water-based formulations made with a blend of water, oils, and emulsifiers. Their lighter texture allows for quick absorption without feeling greasy, making them suitable for daily use across various skin types, including oily or acne-prone skin, according to dermatologist Dr Kisalay Saurav, as told to HealthShots. When chosen carefully and used consistently, body lotion helps restore comfort, support barrier repair, and reduce winter-related skin discomfort.

Benefits of using body lotion for dry skin:

Using a body lotion does more than add surface moisture. It helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance, preventing dryness, flakiness, and irritation by locking in hydration and strengthening the skin’s protective layer. Aesthetic Physician Dr Akanksha Singh Cornuit tells HealthShots that body lotions contain emollients and occlusive agents that create a barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss and protecting against environmental stressors such as wind and pollution. Daily use can keep skin smooth, soft, and supple while nourishing it with ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants. For those with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema, they can offer a calming, soothing effect and enhance overall skin health over time.

Beyond hydration, body lotion addresses specific skin concerns, including uneven texture and loss of firmness. Its numerous benefits make it an essential component of a daily skincare routine.

8 top-rated body lotions for dry skin to try this winter season:

For best results, apply immediately after showering or bathing to seal in hydration. Its lightweight, fast-absorbing formula keeps skin soft, smooth, and comfortable throughout the day, making it suitable for both normal and dry skin types.

CeraVe Moisturising Lotion is a top choice for dry skin due to its unique blend of three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid. This fragrance-free, oil-free formula deeply hydrates while supporting the skin’s natural barrier without clogging pores. People love it for its lightweight, non-greasy texture, which absorbs quickly to provide long-lasting moisture. Ideal for daily use, it keeps skin soft, smooth, and healthy-looking.

Unlike regular lotions, it gently resurfaces skin, revealing softer, more even skin over time. Suitable for both men and women, it’s a great option if uneven or rough patches accompany dryness.

Looking for a caramel‑vanilla body lotion that actually hydrates dry skin? Plum BodyLovin’ Vanilla Caramello is the right pick. With cocoa butter and vitamin B5, it delivers deep moisture without leaving a greasy residue. The warm, cosy scent is a bonus, and my skin stays soft and glowing for hours. If you're over 40 and still doing these 8 things, your skin is aging faster than it should

If you’re over 40 and still doing these 8 things, your skin is aging faster than it should

Remember that viral photo of Paul Rudd at 55 looking exactly the same as he did in “Clueless”? I spent an embarrassing amount of time zooming in on that picture, convinced there had to be some Photoshop trickery involved.

But here’s the thing that really got me: while some people seem to have discovered the fountain of youth, others hit 40 and suddenly look like they’ve aged in dog years.

The difference isn’t always genetics or expensive treatments. Sometimes it’s the everyday habits we don’t even realize are fast-tracking our skin’s aging process.

After diving deep into dermatological research and speaking with skincare experts, I’ve discovered that many of us are unknowingly sabotaging our skin every single day. And if you’re over 40, these habits hit even harder because our skin’s natural repair mechanisms are already slowing down.

1. You’re still sleeping on your stomach or side

This one hurt to write because I was a devoted side-sleeper for decades. But here’s what happens: when you press your face into a pillow for eight hours every night, you’re creating compression lines that eventually become permanent wrinkles.

Dermatologists call them “sleep wrinkles,” and unlike expression lines from smiling or frowning, these develop perpendicular to your natural facial muscles. The chest area gets hit too, developing those vertical lines that no amount of moisturizer seems to fix.

After 40, our skin loses elasticity faster, meaning it doesn’t bounce back from that nightly compression like it used to. The solution? Train yourself to sleep on your back, or invest in a silk pillowcase that creates less friction and pulling on your skin.

2. You’re using the same skincare routine from your 30s

Your skin at 40 is fundamentally different from your skin at 30. Collagen production has dropped by about 1% per year since your mid-20s, and hormonal changes affect everything from oil production to skin thickness.

Yet so many people stick with the same products they’ve been using for years. That lightweight moisturizer that worked perfectly at 35? It’s probably not cutting it anymore. Your skin needs richer formulations, active ingredients like retinoids, and targeted treatments for specific concerns.

The products gathering dust in your medicine cabinet aren’t doing you any favors either. Skincare ingredients degrade over time, and using expired products can actually accelerate aging by causing irritation and inflammation.

3. You’re showering in hot water every day

I get it. A hot shower feels amazing, especially on cold mornings or after a stressful day. But that steaming water is stripping your skin of its natural oils faster than you can say “anti-aging serum.”

Hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and accelerated aging. It’s particularly damaging to facial skin, which is thinner and more delicate than the skin on your body.

The fix is simple but requires willpower: lukewarm water only. Your skin will thank you by maintaining better moisture levels and appearing plumper and more youthful.

4. You’re still using makeup wipes

Convenience is tempting, but makeup wipes are one of the worst things you can do to aging skin. They require aggressive rubbing to remove makeup, which stretches and pulls at delicate skin. Plus, they leave behind residue that clogs pores and prevents your nighttime skincare from absorbing properly.

The tugging motion is especially damaging around the eye area, where skin is thinnest and most prone to wrinkles. Every aggressive swipe contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers.

Switch to a gentle oil or balm cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser. Yes, it takes an extra minute, but those 60 seconds could save you years of premature aging.

5. You’re not wearing sunglasses outside

Squinting in bright light creates those deep crow’s feet that become increasingly difficult to treat after 40. But it’s not just about the squinting.

The skin around your eyes is incredibly vulnerable to UV damage, and regular sunglasses don’t always provide adequate protection for this delicate area.

UV damage is responsible for up to 80% of visible facial aging signs. Those few minutes walking to your car or sitting by a window add up over time, creating age spots, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity.

Invest in quality sunglasses with full UV protection and wear them religiously, even on cloudy days. Consider them as essential as sunscreen.

6. You’re treating your neck like it’s separate from your face

How many times have you carefully applied serums and moisturizers to your face, only to stop right at your jawline? Your neck has fewer oil glands than your face, making it more prone to dryness and showing signs of aging faster.

The dreaded “tech neck” lines from looking down at phones and computers are becoming permanent fixtures for many people over 40. Combined with sun damage and neglect, the neck often reveals someone’s true age even when their face looks years younger.

Whatever you apply to your face should go on your neck and chest too. And apply products in upward strokes to avoid pulling the skin downward.

7. You’re still using your phone in bed

Blue light from screens doesn’t just mess with your sleep. According to experts, it can penetrate deeper into skin than UV rays, potentially accelerating the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

Plus, the position we hold our phones creates “tech neck” and increases those downward lines around the mouth.

I learned this the hard way when I switched to paper books before bed and not only slept better but noticed my morning face looked less puffy and lined.

8. You’re eating like you’re still 25

What shows up on your plate shows up on your face, and after 40, your skin is less forgiving of dietary sins.

High sugar intake creates advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that damage collagen and elastin, literally making your skin stiffer and more prone to wrinkles.

Processed foods, excessive alcohol, and not enough water all contribute to inflammation that shows up as puffiness, dullness, and accelerated aging. Your skin needs nutrients more than ever to maintain its repair processes.

Final thoughts

Realizing you’ve been unknowingly aging your skin faster than necessary can be frustrating. But here’s the encouraging part: skin is remarkably responsive to positive changes, even after 40.

Start with one or two changes that feel manageable. Maybe switch your pillowcase this week and lower your shower temperature next week. Small, consistent changes often stick better than dramatic overhauls.

Your skin at 40, 50, or beyond can still look healthy and vibrant. It just needs you to stop working against it and start working with it. Consider this your wake-up call to break those aging habits and give your skin the respect it deserves.

7 layer dip

7 Layer Dip (Protein Packed)

While I have my favorite stand-by appetizers, I’m always looking for something new to try. Especially when it involves making a traditional dish even healthier. This 7 layer dip recipe is packed with protein thanks to a few, easy ingredient swaps. Serve it with chips, crackers, or veggies for the perfect snack or appetizer.

I brought this dip to a gathering recently and it was a big hit judging by the empty dish I brought home. My kids also love snacking on it and I’ll often make it ahead of time for easy meal prep.

7 Layer Dip Ingredients

So what’s in a 7 layer bean dip recipe? While there have been some different variations over the years, the basic ingredients have largely stayed the same. What’s in 7 layer dip depends on who you ask, but there’s usually refried beans, sour cream, cheese, guacamole, olives and salsa or pico de gallo.

My recipe is a 7 layer dip with taco flavors and uses Greek yogurt and cottage cheese instead of sour cream. This decreases the fat (even though I’m pro-healthy fats!), but it also really ups the protein.

How to Make a 7 Layer Dip

The order of the ingredients doesn’t matter too much, but of course you’ll want toppings like olives and green onions on the top. Each layer is spread evenly into a clear dish to showcase the individual layers. The traditional 7 layer dip ingredients are ordered as follows:

  • Refried beans
  • Sour cream (or in this case cottage cheese and Greek yogurt)
  • Guacamole
  • Shredded cheese
  • Tomato (I use pico de gallo)
  • Green onion
  • Olives

This creates a beautifully layered dip that looks great at any gathering. It’s simple enough to keep in the fridge for snacktime too.

And if you want to increase the protein even more you can add meat. Ground beef works really well and can go on top of the bean layer. I like adding meat when I make this ahead for a simple lunch. Fresh ingredients make for great flavor!

Here’s how to make the ultimate 7 layer dip that’s packed with protein.

7-Layer Protein Dip

A healthy, high-protein twist on the classic 7-layer dip! Perfect for game day, snacks, or a quick protein boost. Kid-approved and full of flavor.

  • Spread the refried beans evenly on the bottom of a serving dish.

  • Combine cottage cheese and Greek yogurt with taco seasoning. Spread this mixture evenly over the beans.

  • Add guacamole by spreading over the protein layer.

  • Layer pico de gallo evenly on top of the guacamole.

  • Sprinkle shredded cheese over the pico layer.

  • Spread black olives evenly over the top.

  • Sprinkle sliced green onions over the dip.

7 Makeup Trends You’ll See Everywhere in 2026

7 Makeup Trends You’ll See Everywhere in 2026

2026 beauty is bold, expressive and unapologetically imperfect. From goth makeup to sparkles and smoky liner, here’s what’s really coming next.

As we close 2025 out, it’s clear that makeup has been slowly shifting back to something more expressive. We spent the year experimenting with underpainting, pushing blush past “natural” into bold territory with orange and purple shades, leaning into toasty ’90s and early 2000s glam with brown glosses and warm eyes, and rediscovering lip stains. It was fun, it was nostalgic, and it felt like a soft rebellion against years of overly minimal beauty.

But in 2026? 2026 is where things get interesting. While some of these trends are coming with us, because who’s giving up blush? Others are quietly being retired. Clean girl makeup, with its obsession over perfection, symmetry, and “effortless” beauty, is losing relevance. The girls are tired of pretending it takes five minutes and no products to look like that.

2026 is all about individualism and imperfect makeup. It’s the year where your makeup doesn’t have to be universally flattering, it just has to feel like you. Makeup is going back to being an art form, a canvas for emotion, fantasy, and creativity. We’re not blindly copying celebrity looks anymore; instead, we’re remixing references, subcultures, and personal tastes, sharing them online, and letting inspiration move organically.

Here are some makeup trends you can expect to see everywhere in 2026.

The goth revival isn’t subtle, and it’s definitely not accidental. Film and pop culture have been quietly steering us back into this dark aesthetic. Goth (short for gothic) is a subculture and aesthetic that centres around dark romanticism, emotion, art, and self-expression. In beauty, goth is often characterised by dark, muted colour palettes like black, burgundy, and deep purple. With gothic-inspired films like Frankenstein, Nosferatu, Dracula: A Love Tale and Werewulf either released in 2025 or set to dominate 2026, dark romantic aesthetics are having a full renaissance.

This isn’t the heavy-handed goth makeup of the past. 2026 Goth is softer and moodier. Eye makeup leans into smudged blacks, charcoal greys, and deep burgundies that look lived-in rather than precise. Lips are darker but blurred and stained instead of sharply lined. Even contour shifts cooler and greyer, sculpting the face in a way that feels almost cinematic .

Most importantly, goth beauty is no longer framed as something you “grow out of.” It’s being embraced as an aesthetic choice, one rooted in art, storytelling, and identity.

2. Maximalist Eye Makeup

For years, eye makeup has taken a backseat to skincare. Soft browns, barely-there shimmer, maybe a wing if you were feeling brave. 2026 flips that completely. The eyes are back, and they’re demanding attention.

Maximalist eye makeup is less about technique perfection and more about intention. Colour is worn boldly, often layered in unexpected ways, with no pressure to blend everything into oblivion. You’ll see multiple shades on one lid, graphic shapes that don’t quite match on both eyes, and textures colliding, as matte meets metallic and shimmer is layered over cream.

This trend is deeply tied to self-expression. It’s about opening your makeup drawer, pulling out the palettes you abandoned during the clean girl era, and actually playing again. Blue eyeshadow isn’t ironic anymore. Green lids aren’t “editorial-only.” The message is quite simple… if it makes you happy, it works.

After years of warm bronzers, caramel nudes, and golden everything, cool tones are staging a very chic comeback. And no, this isn’t about looking “ashy”; it’s about realism and mood.

Cool-tone makeup in 2026 is softer, more atmospheric, and slightly undone. Contour mimics natural shadows rather than warmth. Eyes lean into silvery greys, muted taupes, cool browns, and mauves. Blush moves away from peach and coral into berry, wine, and lavender-adjacent shades that give the skin a flushed, almost emotional quality.

Lips follow suit, with blue-toned reds, cool pinks, and deeper berry shades replacing overly warm nudes.

4. Glitter, Shimmer, and Sparkle Are Back

Minimalism had its moment, but 2026 is done whispering. Shine is back in a big way, and it’s intentional. Highlighter isn’t pretending to be skin anymore; this time around, it’s glowing, sparkling, and catching the light from across the room. Eyes are glossy, shimmery, and sometimes straight-up glittery, even during the day. Body shimmer returns, not just for holidays or events, but as part of everyday beauty rituals.

What’s changed is the attitude. It’s worn with bare skin, messy hair, and smudged eyeliner. It’s imperfect and very playful.

5. Smoky Eyeliner Is Replacing Perfect Wings

The perfectly sharp wing is no longer the standard. In 2026, eyeliner is softer, smudgier, and far more forgiving.

Instead of crisp lines, liner is blended into the lash line, blurred out with fingers, or melted into eyeshadow. Black is still popular, but brown, plum, and even green are having a moment, especially for daytime wear. The result is eye makeup that feels lived-in, slightly messy, and effortlessly cool.

This trend fits perfectly with the broader shift toward imperfection. If it looks like you slept in it? Even better.

6. Feather Lashes Are the New Statement Lash

Big, heavy lashes aren’t disappearing, but they’re no longer the default. Feather lashes that are light, wispy, and textured are becoming the go-to for 2026.

These lashes move when you blink. They’re uneven on purpose, often longer at the outer corners, and designed to enhance the eye rather than overpower it. They work beautifully with both minimal skin and bold eye looks, making them incredibly versatile. They are romantic, soft, and slightly undone, which is exactly where beauty is heading.

7. Embellished Eyes Are Turning Makeup Into Art Again

If there’s one trend that truly cements makeup as an art form in 2026, it’s embellished eyes. Rhinestones, pearls, and metallic accents are no longer reserved for red carpets or editorial shoots; they’re making their way into real-life looks. Gems are placed under the eyes, along eyeliner shapes, at the inner corners, or even floating across the lids. Sometimes they replace eyeshadow entirely. Sometimes they’re layered over it. The point isn’t practicality; it’s expression.

This trend speaks directly to the idea that makeup doesn’t have to be subtle or useful to be valid. It just has to make you feel something.

Makeup in 2026 isn’t about trends you have to follow. It’s about permission to be messy, dramatic, dark, shiny, colourful, or soft, depending on your mood. The goal isn’t to look polished; it’s to look creative, and use your makeup as a canvas for self-expression.
