Summer skincare tips for all skin types

Summer skincare tips for all skin types

Dr Maureen Allem shares expert advice on protecting and perfecting your summer glow.

As South Africans prepare for longer days and warmer weather, one thing is certain: the summer sun is both our best friend and our skin’s greatest challenge. Increased UV exposure, heat, humidity, and environmental stress can all take their toll, no matter your skin tone or type.

At Skin Renewal, the philosophy has always been simple yet profound: healthy, glowing skin is the result of individualised care, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
“When you understand your skin type and how it responds to the sun, you can protect, nourish and strengthen it through every season, especially summer,” says Dr Maureen Allem, founder and medical director at Skin Renewal.

Understanding your skin: The Fitzpatrick Scale

The Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale is the global gold standard for understanding how different complexions respond to sunlight. From very fair to deep brown, each type requires a unique approach to sun care and seasonal maintenance.

Type I: Very fair skin that burns easily and rarely tans
Type II: Fair skin that may tan slightly but often burns
Type III: Medium or olive skin that tans gradually
Type IV: Light brown skin that tans easily, rarely burns
Type V: Brown skin that tans easily, almost never burns
Type VI: Deeply pigmented dark brown or black skin, very resistant to burning

Summer sun can leave its mark, especially on skin types prone to higher melanin activity. Uneven tone, dark spots, and post-inflammatory pigmentation often appear when heat and UV exposure overstimulate pigment cells. At Skin Renewal, we believe radiant skin is possible for every tone. Our multifunctional, medical-grade multifunctional topicals such as Tri-Peptide Brightening Complex, Radiance Cream and Brightening with Vitamin A go beyond brightening; they correct, calm, and restore. These powerful formulations target pigmentation at its source, support barrier repair, and reveal a luminous, even complexion.

Pair them with diligent sun protection and in-clinic treatments for results that glow with confidence, health, and balance; your skin, renewed.

1. Sun protection for every shade

Sun protection remains the most important skincare step for all skin tones. While fair skin (Types I–III) is more prone to visible sunburn, darker skin (Types IV–VI) can experience UV damage in the form of pigmentation, uneven tone, or premature ageing.

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 50 that shields against UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays and reapply every two hours when outdoors.

  • Fair to light skin: Opt for mineral sunscreens such as Heliocare 360 Mineral Tolerance Fluid or Lamelle Helase 50+, ideal for sensitive, reactive complexions.
  • Medium to deep tones: Look for sheer, oil-free options like Heliocare 360 Gel Oil-Free or Lamelle Urban Defence 50+, which protect without leaving a white cast.

“SPF is your skin’s most important daily investment,” says Dr Allem. “Even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors, UV light and blue light from screens contribute to cumulative skin damage.”

2. Hydration and barrier support

Summer heat can strip skin of moisture, leading to dullness and barrier disruption. Hydration helps restore balance and keeps skin resilient.

  • Lighter skin types: Use water-based moisturisers with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to calm and replenish.
  • Darker skin tones: Choose gel-cream or serum textures with ceramides and peptides for barrier support without congestion.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Skin Renewal Treatment Prep Cream (for the barrier support)
  • Skin Renewal Triple Ceramide Hydrating Complex
  • Skin Renewal HA Gel with Peptides

In-clinic treatments such as HydraTouch Facials and Chemical Peels at Skin Renewal offer intensive hydration and cellular renewal for all skin types.

3. Managing pigmentation and uneven tone

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common summer concerns, particularly among Fitzpatrick Types IV–VI, where melanin activity is higher. Excess sun exposure and heat can lead to uneven tone and post-inflammatory marks.

Sun protection is the first line of defence, but corrective treatments can further help:

  • SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense and Lamelle Correctives Brightening Serum target existing pigmentation.
  • Skin Renewal Products that can be used are our Brightening Cream AM, Brightening Cream with Vit A, and Radiance Cream.
  • For deeper skin tones, gentle Laser Genesis, Mesoglow, and Chemical Peels are safe, effective options for restoring even, radiant skin.

4. Exfoliate wisely

Over-exfoliation during summer can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Types I–II: Stick to mild enzyme or lactic acid exfoliants once or twice weekly.
Types III–VI: Use gentle mandelic acid or PHA-based products to renew safely without triggering hyperpigmentation.

For all skin types, we recommend the Skin Renewal Azelaic MediCleanse. Professional options like Radiance Peels or Microdermabrasion at Skin Renewal can be customised according to skin tone and sensitivity.

5. Lifestyle: Beauty from the inside out

Glowing summer skin begins with internal health. Hydrate adequately, prioritise sleep, and include antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, green tea, and leafy greens. Minimise sugar and alcohol, which contribute to inflammation and dehydration. At Skin Renewal, an integrative approach ensures every patient’s inner and outer wellness align. Treatments such as Immune Boosting and Skin Brightening IV infusions, nutritional assessments, and hormonal balance programmes complement topical skincare for lasting results.

6. Professional treatments for the season

If you’re unsure where to start, seek professional guidance. During summer, maintenance and protection are key. Recommended treatments include:

  • HydraTouch Facials for deep hydration
  • Laser Genesis for collagen stimulation
  • Mesoglow or PRP for radiance and rejuvenation
  • LED Therapy to reduce inflammation and promote healing

Each plan at Skin Renewal is tailored to your Fitzpatrick skin type, ensuring results that are safe, effective, and sustainable.

A final word

Healthy summer skin isn’t about perfection, it’s about protection, prevention, and personalised care. “Your skin remembers every moment in the sun, both the good and the harmful,” says Dr Allem. “Protect it, nourish it, and it will thank you for years to come.”

Expert reveals dangers of young kids copying adult anti-aging skincare on TikTok

TikTok isn’t just influencing adult beauty trends. Tweens and teens are plunging into complex skincare regimens, creating both intrigue and worry amongst professionals

From anti-ageing serums to homemade facial tricks, social media platforms like TikTok are swaying a fresh generation of beauty fans, sometimes before they’ve even reached their teenage years.

Labelled “Sephora Kids,” these youthful users are copying grown-up skincare practices, generating viral content under hashtags like #teenageskincare and #tweenskincare, which have accumulated tens of millions of views.

While interest in personal care is normal, skin specialists warn that early use of adult-targeted products can be pointless or even damaging.

Infinity Laser Spa observes that overcomplicating young skin with powerful active components or invasive procedures may trigger irritation, disruption of natural defences, and lasting skin sensitivity.

Grasping what youthful skin actually requires, and what to steer clear of, is vital for both teenagers and their parents, especially in an age where TikTok trends can make adult-level beauty routines seem normal.

What “Sephora Kids” are getting wrong

Numerous teens and preteens are using strong anti-ageing creams, acids, and scrubs created for mature skin. Skin experts caution that this can trigger irritation, sensitivity, and even worsen spots or dryness.

Basic routines, mild cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection, are frequently more than adequate at this stage of life.

TikTok’s algorithm favours relatable, visually captivating content, which prompts young viewers to copy routines without grasping the potential dangers. Viral tutorials, product reviews, and “glow-up” transformations make complex regimens appear crucial, even for skin that doesn’t require them.

“TikTok has turned skincare into a cultural phenomenon for all ages, but not all trends are safe for young skin. Tweens and teens often copy adult routines without grasping their skin’s genuine requirements,” says Certified Laser Technician and Skincare Expert Sam Rock.

The social pressure to achieve “perfect” skin can also have psychological implications, creating stress or anxiety around appearance at an early age. By educating young users and parents, Rock emphasises the importance of safe, age-appropriate skincare, alongside digital literacy about social media influence.

Quick tips for safe tween skincare

  • Stick to a gentle cleanser and lightweight moisturiser.

Gentle cleansing, hydration, and sun protection remain the foundations of healthy adolescent skin. It’s appealing for teens to pursue viral routines, but simplicity triumphs.

  • Avoid harsh chemical exfoliants or adult anti-ageing products.

Overusing acids, retinols, or intensive treatments can damage the skin barrier, causing dryness, sensitivity, and breakouts that could have been prevented. Youthful skin is naturally robust, needing basic care rather than harsh regimens.

  • Parents should supervise and guide purchases, encouraging age-appropriate routines.

Parents and teens should focus on building foundational habits rather than chasing the latest viral product. Safe, gentle routines instil lifelong healthy habits while avoiding unnecessary risks.

“Social media can inspire curiosity, but guidance from trained professionals ensures that enthusiasm doesn’t come at the expense of skin health,” says Rock.

Beauty trick or ick? What you should know before trying viral skincare hacks – NBC 6 South Florida

Beauty trick or ick? What you should know before trying viral skincare hacks – NBC 6 South Florida

Chances are, your social media feed may be filled with “game-changing” beauty hacks, and millions of people are copying them, hoping for the same results. But there are some red flags you should look out for.

From flawless skin to a transformed look, you can find just about every beauty fad on your feed these days.

“Anything that really promises a quick fix to a rather challenging problem with skin has not been really great, and usually I see these on TikTok,” said Amy Peterson, the owner of Skincare by Amy Peterson, a highly regarded Miami boutique medspa focused on noninvasive skin and body treatments.

Among her clients are celebrities and influencers. The esthetician cautions against DIY mole removals, powerful acids, and trends like slugging that could lead to breakouts.

“Slugging is when you use lots of occlusive ointments and you seal in your skincare or multiple layers of it. We really never recommend that,” she said.

In one woman’s case, following that trend caused a reaction, and she warns of paying attention to ingredients because what works for an influencer may not necessarily work for you.

“I think that the viewers need to understand that these influencers are part of a business,” she said. “That is how they make their money, and while some things are great that they are sharing, some things are not so great.”

Bottom line, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is, including those faux freckles, typically attained with makeup or a face tattoo.

“Think something through before you do it. Do not just think of the immediate, ‘I am going to have freckles that I am going to create myself,'” Peterson said. “Think about what could potentially happen. Do some research and ask a professional their opinion.”

That’s because not every trend that earns likes will earn you healthy skin.

“If it is a fad, if it is a trend, it is not really timeless,” she said. “And if we are looking at our appearance and who we really want to show up as, I would always choose the more timeless approach, not the trend. Save that for your wardrobe.”

The risk with some of the viral beauty trends is that there is little oversight. The best advice is that what you see is not one size fits all, so consult with a professional.

The Case For Skin Minimalism In An Age Of Excess

The Case For Skin Minimalism In An Age Of Excess

There’s something quietly radical about doing less. In a culture that sells twenty-step routines and micro-targeted serums for every mood, skin minimalism sounds almost defiant. But dermatologists and beauty insiders alike are realizing that cutting back can be the most luxurious thing you do for your face. Not in a trendy, “clean girl” sense, but in a restorative, science-backed way that puts skin health before obsession.

When Too Much Becomes Too Much

The irony is that our skincare frenzy began with good intentions. We wanted hydration, clarity, and glow. But in the process, we’ve layered active ingredients until our moisture barriers cried for help. Peeling, redness, chronic dryness, these aren’t signs of commitment. They’re signs of confusion. Many of the so-called miracles we chase end up tripping over one another, weakening the very balance we’re trying to protect. The minimal approach doesn’t reject science; it respects sequencing, patience, and restraint.

If your bathroom shelf looks like a lab, your skin’s probably overworked. Just because an ingredient can do something doesn’t mean it should, at least not all at once. Acids, retinoids, and exfoliants have their place, but it’s the constant swapping, layering, and doubling up that creates chaos.

Why Less Feels Better

Minimal skincare is less about what you remove and more about what you let your skin relearn. The skin barrier, that paper-thin yet powerful layer of lipids and cells, is naturally intelligent. When it’s overloaded with harsh ingredients, it loses its ability to regulate oil, hydration, and defense. Pulling back allows it to reset. Think of it like giving your skin a break from background noise so it can find its rhythm again.

People often underestimate how much skin can self-correct when left alone. When products stop competing for attention, your barrier rebuilds, your microbiome recalibrates, and inflammation quiets. In turn, skin looks smoother and calmer, not because it’s been micromanaged, but because it’s been respected.

Rethinking The Everyday Routine

The minimalist mindset doesn’t mean abandoning care altogether. It’s about being intentional. A gentle cleanser, a nourishing moisturizer, and sunscreen, those three form the foundation that never goes out of style. And yes, mineral sunscreens are a must, year-round, whether you’re running errands or sitting by a window on a cloudy day. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are old-school heroes for a reason: they protect without the irritation many chemical filters can bring.

Beyond that, it’s about listening. If your skin feels tight, add a hydrating serum with humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. If it feels oily, swap heavy creams for lighter emulsions instead of reaching for another acid. You’re working with your skin, not against it.

The Connection Between Nutrition And Skin Health

Here’s the part many skincare enthusiasts skip: the link between what you eat and what shows up on your face. Nutrition and skin health are inseparable. When your body runs low on antioxidants, fatty acids, or hydration, it’s written all over your complexion. Eating whole foods rich in vitamin C, omega-3s, and polyphenols supports the same barrier you’re trying to protect topically.

It’s not about chasing beauty from the inside out like a cliché. It’s about realizing that the skin barrier’s strength starts with the nutrients fueling it. A diet heavy in processed foods and sugars encourages inflammation, while one filled with plants, clean proteins, and healthy fats supports a calm, even-toned complexion. The most radiant skin routines are the ones that don’t end at the bathroom sink.

How Simplicity Becomes Luxury

Minimalism is often mistaken for austerity, but in skincare, it’s the opposite. A curated routine feels indulgent because it’s mindful. When you only use what truly works, each product becomes intentional, not background clutter. You start enjoying the ritual again instead of sprinting through steps like a checklist.

The luxury of less lies in the awareness it creates. When your skin looks and feels good without constant intervention, there’s a quiet confidence in that. It’s not about perfection. It’s about alignment, your products, your habits, and your skin all working together instead of competing.

In the end, skin minimalism isn’t a movement or a rulebook. It’s a reset button. It’s choosing presence over panic, progress over performance. The skincare industry will always evolve, offering new ingredients, new textures, new promises. But the timeless truth remains: balance wins.

Γιατί να εντάξεις τη ρετινόλη και το υαλουρονικό στη ρουτίνα σου;

Winter Skincare For Indian Skin: Why Body Care Matters And How Vitamin E Helps | Beauty News

Winter Skincare For Indian Skin: Why Body Care Matters And How Vitamin E Helps | Beauty News

Last Updated:November 20, 2025, 07:46 IST

Discover how winter impacts Indian skin and why body care is essential. Learn expert-backed tips, Vitamin E benefits, and how to protect your skin from dryness.

True winter beauty is not just about what you apply, it’s about how well your skin protects, repairs, and renews itself every day.

As winter sets in, the crisp air and falling temperatures bring much-needed relief from the heat but for your skin, it’s often a different story. The drop in humidity, coupled with indoor heating and longer hot showers, can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, tight, and flaky. While most people focus primarily on facial skincare, the body often gets overlooked, even though it experiences the same if not more seasonal damage.

How Winter Affects Indian Skin

According to the Dermafique Indian Skin Health Report, Indian skin has a weaker barrier function and lower moisture retention compared to Caucasian skin, making it more vulnerable to dryness during colder months. In fact, 80% of Indian women experience dryness due to environmental factors, while 87% report under-eye dryness even after moisturising, highlighting that hydration loss runs deeper than the surface.

“Indian skin is unique because it tends to have a higher baseline oil content compared to Caucasian skin,” explains Dr Aparna Santhanam, dermatologist and skin expert, ITC Dermafique. “However, even this natural resilience doesn’t protect it completely during winter. The lower humidity and cold air pull moisture from the upper layers of the skin, weakening the skin barrier. As a result, you may notice increased dryness, dullness, and sometimes even itching or flakiness.”

This loss of moisture is not just a surface concern, it affects the skin barrier, the invisible shield that keeps irritants out and hydration in. Once compromised, the skin becomes more susceptible to environmental aggressors, leading to long-term issues such as premature aging and uneven texture.

Why Body Care Needs Equal Attention

While most people diligently switch their facial moisturisers during winter, the same level of care rarely extends to the body. Yet the skin on the body especially the arms, legs, and back is constantly exposed to friction from clothing and dryness from hot water.

“People often forget that body skin requires the same nourishment and repair as facial skin,” says Dr Aparna. “Neglecting it during winter can lead to issues like rough patches, dullness, and loss of elasticity. Using the right body care products helps maintain skin integrity and restores the suppleness that’s lost during colder months. A consistent body care ritual, starting with gentle cleansing followed by deep moisturisation, can replenish lipids and lock in hydration, ensuring your skin stays healthy and radiant from head to toe.”

Vitamin E: The Hero Ingredient for Winter Skin

When it comes to protecting and repairing winter-stressed skin, Vitamin E stands out as a true multitasking ingredient. It not only replenishes moisture but also strengthens the skin barrier and prevents further dehydration.

“Vitamin E is an antioxidant powerhouse,” explains Dr Aparna. “It neutralises free radicals caused by environmental stress and supports the regeneration of skin cells. When used topically, it enhances the skin’s ability to retain moisture and helps soothe irritation, making it especially valuable during dry, cold months.”

Vitamin E–enriched body lotions or serums help deeply nourish the skin, reduce roughness, and improve overall texture. These formulations also repair microdamage, keeping the skin soft, smooth, and resilient even in harsh winter weather.

Building a Winter Body Care Routine

Transitioning your body care routine for winter doesn’t need to be complicated, it simply needs to be intentional. For those with extremely dry skin, adding a body serum can provide an extra layer of nourishment. Its lighter texture allows deeper penetration of actives like Vitamin E, helping repair the skin barrier and restore a healthy glow.

Winter may be synonymous with cozy layers and cool breezes, but it also demands a shift in how you care for your skin. As Dr. Aparna Santhanam puts it, “Your skin mirrors your environment. When the air turns cold and dry, your body care routine must evolve to compensate for that loss of moisture.”

By embracing Vitamin E–rich formulations and a consistent winter body care ritual, you can protect your skin from seasonal dryness and keep it soft, supple, and radiant all winter long, because true skincare doesn’t stop at the face.

Shay Mitchell defends children's skincare line Rini after controversy

Shay Mitchell defends children’s skincare line Rini after controversy

Critics have weighed in on Shay Mitchell’s skincare line for children, and now she’s giving us the barefaced truth.

The actress and wellness entrepreneur, who previously sparked controversy with her cosmetic brand tailored to kids, Rini, addressed the scrutiny during an appearance on the “Today” show Wednesday, Nov. 19.

“I was a little surprised,” Mitchell, 38, told “Today” host Jenna Bush Hager and guest cohost Olivia Munn. “Anything that involves kids, there should be a conversation around it. I have a lot of questions, as I’m sure you both do, when anything involves our kids — with what they eat and what they put on their skin — so I didn’t think this would be anything different.”

Mitchell, mother of daughters Atlas (6) and Rome (3), launched Rini on Nov. 6. The line features various face masks for youth ages 4 and up, which Mitchell said meets a growing demand of interest in skincare among children. The brand boasts dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic and vegan products.

However, Mitchell’s kid-friendly beauty venture drew mixed reactions on social media, with some criticizing the appropriateness of marketing skincare products to young children.

Face masks aren’t “necessary for kids. I also don’t think masks are necessary for us,” Mitchell reflected on the “Today” show. “But are they great for added comfort and extra hydration? Yes, and that’s all it is.”

Shay Mitchell defends children’s skincare line

The launch of Mitchell’s skincare line comes at a time when parents, dermatologists and lawmakers are expressing caution about children’s use of adult-like products.

In 2024, the “Sephora Kids” trend gained traction on social media, featuring children running through Sephora aisles, shopping for skincare products to try out at home. The number of young creators sharing beauty routines has skyrocketed over the past year.

During Mitchell’s “Today” show appearance, Bush Hager asked the “Pretty Little Liars” alum about the potential for Rini to contribute to the cultural trend of children focusing on their physical appearance.

“Skincare starts from birth,” Mitchell said. “We moisturize, we soothe, we comfort their skin as newborns. This is the same thing. It’s just in a different format that’s more fun and I feel very age-appropriate.”

Mitchell added that she doesn’t view the use of face masks as a “beauty thing,” touting the products’ potential for encouraging self-care among children and family quality time.

“Kids don’t look at masks and think about fixing [their appearance],” Mitchell said. “They think about it being a cooling sensation and a shared moment.”

Is Rini safe for kids? What experts are saying about Shay Mitchell’s skincare brand

Marisa Garshick, a dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology: Medical Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in New York, previously told USA TODAY that while it is good to acknowledge the importance of skincare, even at an early age, young children don’t need to use face masks.

A gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen are all they need, she said.

Garshick added that while the ingredients in the Rini face masks are not “necessarily harsh” and can be safe for occasional use, they are not necessary for routine use.

“Too many ingredients, even if not individually harmful, may still contribute to skin irritation and sensitivity,” she said.

Pregnancy-safe skincare starts with understanding what your skin actually needs

Pregnancy-safe skincare starts with understanding what your skin actually needs

Pregnancy-safe skincare can get confusing fast. What was once a reliable routine can suddenly feel like a minefield of ingredients to avoid. Between hormonal acne, sudden sensitivity, obsessive Google-ing and family members’ paranoia, finding products that balance effectiveness and caution can feel overwhelming.

Here’s an expert-approved guide on what to use and what to avoid.

What ‘pregnancy-safe’ really means

According to Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, founder of Isaac Luxe, India’s market for pregnancy-safe skincare is expanding quickly, but regulation hasn’t caught up. “Many of these labels act as marketing tools rather than verified medical standards,” she says. “Unlike food or pharmaceutical safety, there’s no single authority assessing these claims.”

“One ingredient may be safe in isolation,” says Dr Geeta Mehra Fazalbhoy, founder of Skin & You Clinic, “but skincare is about the whole list of ingredients working together in tandem. Unless the full product has been evaluated, the label alone doesn’t mean much.” Always read ingredient lists and discuss any actives, especially retinoids, hydroquinone, high-strength salicylic acid or strong peels with your doctor before use.

Common skin changes during pregnancy

Hormones overhaul the skin’s behaviour, sometimes mildly, sometimes dramatically. Expectant mothers often experience melasma, acne, dryness, itching or heightened sensitivity. “Even women who’ve never had breakouts may suddenly deal with oiliness or pigmentation,” says Dr Gupta. Gentleness is the way to go: fragrance-free cleansers, barrier-repair moisturisers and diligent sunscreen to prevent worsening pigmentation.

The ingredients dermatologists trust

Dr Gupta recommends niacinamide, azelaic acid, ceramides, vitamin C, squalane and peptides. Gentle, yet effective actives that support the skin barrier.

Dr Fazalbhoy adds that simplicity wins, “Ceramides to support the barrier, hyaluronic acid for hydration and oat extract for calming. For acne, azelaic acid and low-strength benzoyl peroxide can be used with care.”

The biggest pregnancy-safe skincare myths

Myth 1: Natural means safe.

Not always. Some essential oils can irritate or cause allergic reactions.

Myth 2: Avoid all chemicals.

“Dermatologist-approved actives are safe when used correctly,” says Dr Gupta.

Myth 3: Expensive equals effective.

The goal isn’t luxury. Choose nourishment over fear.

Myth 4: Nothing is really pregnancy-safe.

“Most regulated products use actives in small, safe concentrations,” Dr Fazalbhoy explains. “Gentle consistency, hydration and sun protection go further than switching your entire routine.”

Pregnancy is the time to simplify your routine and strip it down to the basics. As Dr Fazalbhoy puts it, “Not every new mark or pigment patch needs correction. Many of these changes fade naturally postpartum. Gentle care often outperforms constant intervention.”
