Do Kids Really Need Skincare? Experts Warn Against Trend-Driven Routines

Do Kids Really Need Skincare? Experts Warn Against Trend-Driven Routines

Elsa Angel Rose

While TikTok and Instagram trends popularise child skincare for its aesthetics, the real purpose of skincare is being overshadowed. Kids, teens and pre-teens feel the urge to do a GRWM or DIY makeup as frequently as daily. It makes us wonder, do kids and pre-adolescents really need to get into skincare when their skin is not even fully developed? Even if the child insists on having a 3-step or even a 5-step elaborate skincare routine, should parents cave into this? Anyway, kids are not fully wrong to wish for good skincare. “A basic skincare routine is beneficial for a child’s development, focusing on moisturising, sun protection & cleansing using kid-friendly, fragrance-free products,” said Dr Nathaniel John Pinto, a Paediatrician at Manipal Hospital. This helps in protecting the delicate skin barrier of children, preventing sunburn & dryness.

Stating the obvious, a child’s skin is totally different from a fully developed adult’s skin. Children have still-developing and immature skin, which is structurally thinner than adult skin. Their skin tends to absorb tropical ingredients more readily, which can be both beneficial and harmful. Dr Bindu said, “The outermost barrier (stratum corneum) contains fewer natural lipids, making it more permeable and prone to moisture loss, irritation, and allergen penetration. Sebum production is minimal until puberty, which means children lack the natural protective oils, unlike adults skin, which help defend itself against environmental stressors like pollution, friction, and microbes. As a result, children’s skin absorbs topical ingredients more readily, which is both beneficial and harmful.” Hence, the formulation choice a child uses on himself or herself is particularly important

When one is pervasively unaware of the pros and cons of something, one tends to believe the majority’s perception. Hence, especially for parents in this scenario, it is important to be well educated and mindful. The ubiquitous influencer culture, widespread marketing tactics of brands to target children, and easy availability and access to any sort of skincare products do not help create a positive connotation for child skincare. When adult skincare brands keep their products at a kid’s eye level on a supermarket shelf, when there are no age barriers for the ‘Unboxing videos’ of adult skincare products, naturally, people think how harmful the products meant to be used on adults might be on a child’s skin. This is where knowing the difference between adult and child skincare can go a long way. Because “Basic care, including gentle cleansing, moisturising, and sunscreen, is necessary to support the developing skin barrier and prevent issues like eczema, sun damage, and sensitivity,” quoting Dr Bindu. Always remember that skincare has to be minimal, age appropriate and function-focused. If it is driven by market trends, peer pressure, or aesthetic priorities to ‘look cool’ or similar, then it is not skin care or self-care. Then one is harming oneself in the most ‘uncool’ way possible, and it is the parents’ responsibility to guide children not to do that.

“Parents should keep their child away from any harsh soaps, excessive bathing, and high sun exposure for long-term skin protection; these things will cause the balance of the child’s skin to be disrupted. Parents are encouraged to use children’s broad-spectrum sunscreen, keep the child hydrated, and provide a soft, breathable fabric against their child’s skin to keep it protected,” said Dr Simantini R Sakhardande, a consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist at Manipal Hospital. She further informed, “Having a simple and consistent regimen early on will decrease the chances of developing eczema f lare-ups, rashes, or any other issues and create a foundation for long-term skin health and resilience. Mild, unscented cleansing and moisturising routines that allow for the proper function of the natural barrier of a child’s skin will help to keep their skin moisturised and irritant-free dermatologically.”

So if a basic skincare does no harm, what kind of skincare becomes harmful for them? “Introducing ‘adult-style skincare’ with actives such as acids, retinoids, or brightening agents is unnecessary and potentially harmful, as it can disrupt the skin barrier and trigger long-term sensitivity,” explained Dr Bindu Sthalekar, a celebrity dermatologist and Founder of Skin Smart Solutions. Regular use of such skincare can also cause “The risk of developing skin irritation and dryness, allergic reactions & eczema arising from strong fragrances & preservatives,” said Dr Nathaniel. When asked about whether frequent exposure to various chemicals affects a child’s developing body in any way, he replied, “Some chemicals called endocrine-disrupting chemicals can interfere with the body’s natural hormones & can affect a child’s growth and development, play a role in affecting the child’s reproductive health and future fertility. Additionally, due to a child’s thinner skin barrier, chemicals can be absorbed into the bloodstream more easily, thus increasing the chances of systemic side effects.

Morning

Many
people

The
answer
usually
depends
on

Key
Steps
in
a
Morning
Routine

Most
people
do
not
need
a

in

The

The
Role
of
Sunscreen
in

Sunscreen
is
often
the
most
important
product
in
a

It
protects
skin
from
UV
rays,
which
can
cause
dark

Key
Steps
in
a
Night
Routine

Night
skincare
often
starts
with
deep
cleansing.
If

First
use
a

Next,

Seal

When
Night
Skincare
May
Matter
More

For
people
dealing
with
acne,
marks,
or
ageing
signs,
night
skincare
may
feel
more
useful.
This
is
because
treatment
products
like
retinol,
exfoliating

usually
work
best
at
night.
Sunlight

When
Morning
Skincare
May
Matter

In
hot,

Skin
Type,
Lifestyle,
and
Climate

Oily
skin
may
prefer
lighter
textures
in
both
routines,
such
as
gel
cleansers
and
water-based
moisturisers.
Dry
skin
may
need
cream
cleansers
and
richer
night
creams.
For
people
in
cooler
hill
stations,
extra
hydration
at
night
may
be
key.
Those
in
coastal
or
very
humid
areas
may
rely
more
on
oil
control
and
sunscreen
during
the
day.

Balancing
Both
Routines
for
Indian
Skin

For
many
Indians,
the
best
approach
is
to
give
equal
care
to
both
routines,
but
focus
on
different
goals.
Use
your
morning
skincare
to
protect
from
sun
and
pollution
with
sunscreen
as
the
hero
step.
Use
your
night
skincare
to
repair
and
treat,
using
simple
but
steady
products.
Avoid
harsh
scrubs
and
very
strong
actives
without

Simple
Tips
to
Decide
Your
Focus

If
time
is
short
in
the
morning,
never
skip
sunscreen,
even
if
you
cut
other
steps.
If
time
is
short
at
night,
at
least
cleanse
well
and
use
a
basic
moisturiser.
People
with
active
skin
concerns
may
focus
more
on
night
treatment,
while
those
with
outdoor
jobs
may
rely
more
on
morning
care.
Consistency
in
both
routines
gives
the
best
results.

A dermatologist's guide to wedding skincare: Expert tips for a natural bridal glow on your big day

A dermatologist’s guide to wedding skincare: Expert tips for a natural bridal glow on your big day

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. From selecting your wedding lehenga to jewellery, picking your hairstyle and getting the makeup right, everything contributes to creating the bridal glow. But in between planning for all these aspects, brides-to-be often end up neglecting skincare.

Get glowing skin on your wedding with these tips(Freepik)

What’s worth not forgetting is that while makeup can enhance your beauty, true glow comes from healthy, nourished skin. The secret to that flawless bridal look is a well-planned skincare routine that starts months before the big day. So, for all those beautiful bride-to-be, here is a quick guide for glowing skin for a bridal look that lasts from the ceremony to the final dance.

Wedding Skincare Guide for brides-to-be

Dermatologist Dr Shweta Tripathi, Co-founder at MySkindom, tells HT ShopNow, “For a wedding glow, it’s better to start way early before your D-day. Apart from skincare, it is also important to stay hydrated and eat well. ”

Start Early — The 3-Month Rule

Bridal glow doesn’t happen overnight. It is something you build with regular care and consistency. “As a dermatologist, I always remind brides to start your skincare routine early, preferably 3-6 months before their wedding. This gives enough time to address issues such as pigmentation, acne scars, uneven skin tone or texture, and to build skin resilience”, says Dr Tripathi.

In case you have breakouts, acne, or pigmentation, you can consult a dermatologist beforehand. She suggests to drink plenty of water (or hydrating fluids like coconut water), and eat an antioxidant-rich diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as these habits will really make the skin look healthy from within. Moreover, try staying away from fried and oily food to avoid acne and breakouts.

Follow the basic CTM routine consistently

Keep your skincare routine simple with basic cleansing, toning, and moisturising (CTM). Maintain consistency by using the products as per your skin type. A consistent skincare routine is much better than applying some last-minute skincare products.

Morning routine:

Cleanser: Use a gentle cleanser to wash off impurities and dirt and prep your skin.

Toner: Make toner your daily BFF as it helps balance pH and tighten pores.

Serum: Use a face serum daily for the ultimate glow. Opt for a vitamin C face serum to boost your glow and even-toned skin

Moisturiser: Choose a moisturiser as per your skin type. A good nourishing cream or moisturiser keeps your skin soft and hydrated throughout the day.

Sunscreen: Never skip using a sunscreen. In fact, this is non-negotiable! Even indoors, SPF protects you from dullness and premature ageing.

Night routine:

Remove makeup: Your skin will thank you for this later. But never forget to remove your makeup. Use a makeup remover wipe or micellar water to clean away your makeup or dirt residue before going to bed.

Exfoliate (2–3 times a week): Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. Exfoliation gently buffs away blackheads and dead cells.

Face Serum: Treat your skin with a face serum at night, too. Retinol or hyaluronic acid face serum helps repair and renew your skin.

Night Cream: Finally, finish your nighttime skincare with a nourishing night cream to lock in hydration while you sleep.

Weekly skin pampering

Your skin deserves at least a weekly dose TLC! Weekly pampering helps maintain that glow and freshness. Go for facials or treatments, or opt for DIY face masks for that glow.

DIY face masks: You can create your own DIY face masks using homemade products. Choose natural ingredients like honey, yoghurt, turmeric, and aloe vera for your skin that can work wonders.

Professional facials: Go for hydrating or brightening facials every 2–3 weeks, but avoid trying anything new too close to the wedding.

Body care: Remember, your glow shouldn’t stop at your face. Scrub, exfoliate, and moisturise your body regularly for even-toned, soft skin.

Tackle specific skin concerns

Every bride has her unique skin story, whether it’s acne, dryness, or uneven tone. You can tackle these skin issues with certain skin ingredients. This gives enough time to address issues such as pigmentation, acne scars, uneven skin tone or texture, and to build skin resilience. Begin to address pigmentation or hair care concerns at least 6 months before the wedding date. For any booster to be injected, go for it at least 1 month before the wedding. And for any laser hair reduction, keep at least an 8-month window.

For acne-prone skin: Choose products with salicylic acid or tea tree oil.

For pigmentation: Vitamin C and niacinamide help fade dark spots.

For dry skin: Look for hydrating ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

For oily skin: Gel-based moisturisers and mattifying toners keep shine in check.

However, consult a dermatologist before using these ingredients.

Don’t forget the basics

No product can replace the power of a healthy lifestyle. Indulge in a healthy lifestyle before your D-Day to glow on the special night.

Sleep enough: Sleep for at least 7–8 hours for that fresh, rested glow.

Stay stress-free: Stress = breakouts. Try yoga, meditation, or simply a walk in the fresh air.

Exercise and burn those calories: Exercise boosts blood circulation, along with burning some fat, and gives you that lit-from-within glow.

The final week countdown

Know that the final few days before the wedding day are not the time to experiment. Rather, just stick to what your skin already loves. “The week before the wedding should be about keeping the skin calm and rested. Your skin regenerates while you sleep — this helps reduce dark circles, puffiness, and dullness. So, get adequate sleep of at least 7–8 hours.”, says Dr Tripathi. She further mentions that when a bride cares for her skin holistically, internally and externally, the makeup doesn’t just sit better, the glow feels effortless and authentic. A combination of discipline, wellness, and confidence is the true essence of bridal radiance.

(Image Credits: Instagram) The skincare industry is evolving every day, and we continue to witness forms and ingredients that have been used for ages and have remained part of beauty rituals for centuries. As we return to age-old remedies instead of relying solely on high-priced manufactured products, let’s look at 5 ancient skincare practices that are still used today. These traditions also have therapeutic effects, which is why they’re still relevant. The combination of yoghurt and olive oilWe have all heard about the benefits of consuming Greek yoghurt, but it’s not just good to eat; you can also apply it as a face mask. Yoghurt contains natural lactic acid, which cleans the pores, while olive oil hydrates the skin. In some regions, locals even use yoghurt as post-sun care because it soothes sunburn. It is often blended with honey and olive oil, creating a mix that moisturises, cleanses, and hydrates your skin.

The many types and benefits of Indian ubtansUsed in nearly every Indian household, ubtans are known to lend a fresh glow to the skin. They balance moisture levels and help remove excess oil. Ubtans are usually made with chickpea flour, and many people add sandalwood, rose water, milk, and turmeric to create a natural paste that exfoliates, hydrates, and cleanses the face. You can apply ubtans to your body as well, and even add essential oils for extra nourishment.

Coconut oil from IndiaIndians are officially obsessed with coconut oil, which is used extensively for both hair and skincare. Coconut oil is intensely hydrating and can be used in multiple ways to moisturise hair and skin. It works well as a double cleanser and can be applied to dry elbows, cuticles, and even chapped lips. Night Skincare Tips for Glowing, Hydrated Skin – Experts Explain

Taking care of your skin before you sleep can work wonders for your skin. According to experts, a well-structured nighttime skincare routine gives skin an opportunity to repair and heal itself from daily damage from sun exposure, pollution, makeup or stress and wake up with healthy and rejuvenated skin.

Step 1: Remove makeup and sunscreen.

Dermatologists emphasise that it’s essential to remove makeup or apply sunscreen during the day before going to sleep. They suggest using an oil-based cleanser or micellar water; these are better options for dissolving heavy makeup, sunscreen and the dirt your skin accumulates throughout the day. Leaving makeup or sunscreen overnight can irritate the skin or clog pores.

Step 2: Cleanse gently.

After makeup removal, a gentle facial wash is important. Cleansing helps remove dirt, sweat, pollution and excess oil even on days when there is no makeup applied on the skin. Experts warn against harsh scrubbing or strong soaps, as these are harmful and can strip away the skin’s natural oils, possibly leading to dryness or irritation.

Step 3: Exfoliate – but only occasionally

Exfoliation helps clear dead skin cells and supports skin turnover. Chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs are more effective and gentler than harsh physical scrubs, especially for mature skin. Use exfoliation two to three times a week, but avoid combining exfoliation with retinol treatments on the same night, as this can dry out or irritate skin.

Step 4: Tone and apply targeted treatments

After cleansing or exfoliation, a toner can restore your skin’s pH balance and prime it for more treatment. Experts recommend targeted treatments such as retinol (for ageing concerns), niacinamide (for redness or brightening) or BHA (for acne-prone skin). Retinol should ideally be introduced gradually, starting 1–2 times per week.

Step 5: Hydrate and moisturise

The final step is hydration. Apply serums that give hydration deep into the skin, creams or oils to seal in moisture, and optionally eye creams to address puffiness, dark circles or fine lines. Finish with a nourishing moisturiser to lock everything in overnight.

Extras: Masks or beauty tools (optional)

For additional care, face masks or beauty tools like LED masks or facial massagers can boost results, but they should be applied occasionally. Experts say they are not essential but can complement the nightly routine.

According to dermatologists, a regular nighttime skincare routine – cleansing, treating, hydrating – is “like pressing a reset button” for your skin every night.

Skincare today is evolving into something far more joyful than a checklist of steps. The global rise of ‘dopamine beauty’ signals a deeper shift – one where colour, texture, scent, and sensorial pleasure are just as important as efficacy. Consumers want results, yes, but they also want skincare that sparks delight, feels comforting on the skin, and turns everyday routines into mini mood-boosting rituals. This emotional connection is what’s reshaping the beauty landscape.

Pravin Bera, Co-Founder, Dr. Rashel, sees this transformation unfold daily. “Dopamine beauty brings a sense of playfulness to routines, turning daily steps into moments that feel good. When products feel pleasant to use, people are more willing to stay committed to their skincare,” he says.

Manish B. Chowdhary, Co-Founder, Wow Skin Science, calls it a behaviour shift, not just a trend. “Sensoriality is now a genuine purchase driver – bright visuals, playful textures and mood-enhancing formats increase attention, recall and repeat use. Brands that treat emotion as seriously as efficacy are the ones that will keep winning,” he explains.

Vishal Anand, Exclusive Licensee Partner for Lush in India, notes that the philosophy has always been simple: “Beauty should spark instant happiness the moment you see, touch, or smell it.”

Together, their insights map the rise of beauty that delights the senses as deeply as it cares for the skin.

The Sensory Revolution In Cleansing And Hydration

The dopamine effect begins with the simplest step: cleansing. Bera notes how charcoal cleansers, aloe vera gels, and rice water formulas are no longer chosen just for performance but for the visual and tactile experience. The deep black of charcoal, the cool glide of aloe, and the feather-light foam of rice water create a moment of sensorial calm. “These textures make daily cleansing a pause-and-refresh ritual,” he says.

Serums and hydration products are also evolving aesthetically. Vivid vitamin C solutions, green tea gels, and bouncy hyaluronic acid formulas bring brightness and instant freshness to routines. Their lightweight feel is as energising as their active ingredients.

Textures That Lift The Mood

Masking and weekly treatments have become the heart of dopamine beauty. From inky charcoal masks to pastel clay packs and silky ceramide serums, the experience is as important as the outcome. Bera notes that these tactile shifts encourage consistency: “The satisfying feel of a mask or scrub encourages regular use and gives visible results.”

Anand highlights how fruit-infused scrubs, sea-salt polishes, syrupy rose gels and vibrant creams turn rituals into indulgent moments. “Each texture and shade is designed to engage the senses and reconnect you with yourself,” he says.

The Future Of Dopamine Beauty

Dopamine beauty extends far beyond the formula. Optimistic colours, uplifting fragrances and formats that feel playful in hand create instant emotional connection. Bright, nature-inspired hues and expressive scents also anchor an ethos of happiness-led beauty.

Dopamine beauty marks a turning point in the industry – an understanding that skincare is emotional care. It’s about turning mundane routines into meaningful, joyful moments through colour, texture, scent, and sensorial design. As brands continue to innovate, products that spark happiness will sit right alongside those that deliver results. And together, they’ll create beauty rituals that uplift both skin and spirit, one mood-brightening step at a time.
