Long flights from the UAE? 7 skincare essentials for holiday travel, 2025

Long flights from the UAE? 7 skincare essentials for holiday travel, 2025

Flying out of the UAE for the Christmas holidays? Before you board that long-haul flight armed with your neck pillow and Netflix downloads, let’s talk skincare. Nothing sabotages your holiday glow faster than recycled cabin air, humidity and eight hours of pretending you can sleep upright. So, even if you’re jetting to snowy Europe or chasing warmer skies, your skin deserves first-class treatment. From hydrating serums to mid-flight refreshers, these are the 7 skincare essentials that will keep you looking dewy, rested and absolutely unbothered when you touch down. Consider this your inflight beauty survival kit for 2025.

So, be prepared with these skincare essentials, and get them delivered to you as early as tomorrow with a Prime membership.

1) Best Facial Mist: Avene Thermal Spring Water

When the cabin air starts stealing every drop of moisture from your skin, this is the mist you want on standby. The 1.6 oz travel-friendly bottle slips easily into your carry-on, ready to revive your face with a wave of hydration at 30,000 feet.

Made with pure thermal spring water from France’s Cévennes Mountains, it’s naturally packed with calming minerals. If your skin turns red, itchy, or Sahara-dry mid-flight, this soothing spritz brings instant relief — especially for sensitive, easily irritated skin.

2) Best Lotion: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Lotion

No doubt, traveling can take a toll on your skin, especially your body—which often gets overlooked in your flight skincare routine. Enter the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Lotion Ultralight, which helps keeping your skin hydrated, smooth, and fresh even after hours in dry cabin air.

Formulated with skin-quenching glycerine and hyaluronic acid, this cream draws in moisture and seals it in, ideal for fighting off tight, flaky skin during and after travel. Its gel texture absorbs instantly, so you won’t feel greasy in your seat or during a layover.

3) Best Lip Balm: WishCare Ceramide Lip Balm

Say hello to WishCare Ceramide Lip Balm with SPF 50 PA+++, your must-have inflight lip saviour. This compact 5 g tube fits perfectly in your carry-on, ready to protect and pamper lips through dry cabin air and holiday sunshine. Rich ceramides lock in moisture, preventing the flakiness and cracking that long flights love to bring. Meanwhile, Kojic Acid and Niacinamide help fade dark pigmentation and even out tone, so your lips look fresh when you land. With high-strength SPF 50 PA+++, it shields against UVA/UVB rays — essential even at altitude. Hydrating, protective and perfect for jetsetters on the go.

4) Best for Dry Skin: Galderma Cetaphil Dry Skin Combo

The Galderma Cetaphil Dry Skin Combo is a solid companion for flights. The Gentle Skin Cleanser sweeps away impurities without stealing moisture, while the hydrating cream pampers dry hands, elbows, or any tight spots at 30,000 feet. Finish with the lightweight SPF cream for broad-spectrum sun protection—perfect for landing in sunny destinations or walking through glass-walled airports. Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and travel-ready, this trio keeps your skin calm, soft, and fully protected, ensuring you touch down looking fresh no matter how long the flight.

5) Best Hydrating Serum: Cerave Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid

If your skin rebelled every time cabin air turned dry and tight, the CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is what you need. Lightweight yet powerful, this serum delivers a deep drink of moisture exactly where your skin needs it most. Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water like a magnet, while a trio of essential ceramides helps reinforce your skin’s protective barrier — critical when you’re battling recycled air at 30,000 feet. Non‑comedogenic, fragrance‑free and gentle enough for sensitive skin, it layers beautifully under moisturiser or SPF. Quick to absorb and easy to pack, it’s a must‑have for hydrated, plump skin from takeoff to touchdown.

6) Best Eye Cream: La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Eye Cream

If your eyes are the first to announce a long flight with puffiness, dark circles or tiredness, the La Roche‑Posay Pigmentclar Eye Cream deserves a spot in your carry‑on. This lightweight formula targets darkness and uneven tone around the eyes — perfect for combatting the effects of dry cabin air and jet lag. Caffeine helps refresh puffed‑up under‑eyes, while L‑Dopa and light‑reflecting pigments brighten and improve overall radiance. Infused with soothing thermal spring water, it’s gentle on sensitive skin and glides on easily under makeup or alone. Apply before takeoff and again on landing for eyes that look rested, not worn‑out.

7) Bioderma Photoderm sunscreen

Whether you’re sitting by a plane window or landing in full sun, Bioderma Photoderm MAX Aquafluide SPF 50+ is the perfect sunscreen to have on hand. This lightweight, dry-touch formula offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection without leaving a greasy or heavy feel—ideal for travel. The golden tint provides a subtle, natural-looking glow, evening out your skin tone while keeping it protected. Designed for all skin types, it’s non-comedogenic, water-resistant, and absorbs fast—so you can apply it easily during or after your flight without disrupting your skincare or makeup. At 40 ml, it’s perfectly sized for your carry-on, making it a travel skincare essential, especially for sunny destinations or UV exposure through airplane windows.

53+ Ways to Give Experience Gifts Instead of Stuff This Year

With 6 kids, multiple business ventures, and an indoor plant obsession, it’s easy for things to pile up around the house. Amidst the holiday season gift-giving these gifts can lead to more stress for both the giver and receiver. Over the years we’ve embraced more of a minimalist lifestyle, including giving experience gifts.

After some trial and error, it’s now the norm… and the results are amazing!

An experience gift can be easy to arrange and thoughtful, even if it’s last minute. They’re also rewarding to both the giver and receiver. And you don’t have to live near Chicago or NYC and see a Broadway play to have a unique experience. Going to the movies as a family, taking art classes, or learning to scuba dive are priceless memories or skills that last a lifetime.

I still give a few material presents out at Christmas (you can find many of those unique gifts in this ultimate gift guide). However, the focus has shifted from piles of gifts to experiences that often the whole family can enjoy.

Do We Have Too Much Stuff?

Joshua Becker is my favorite expert on the topic of clutter and minimalism. He shares some sobering trends on his Becoming Minimalist blog.

Consider this:

  • The average American home has over 300,000 items in it.
  • At least 4 in 10 of us have a storage unit to store our excess stuff.
  • There’s enough physical space for every man, woman, and child in America to stand in U.S. storage facilities—all at the same time!

Why Give Experiences and Not Stuff?

Those staggering statistics wouldn’t worry me if it seemed the excess stuff somehow improved our lives. But that isn’t the case. Statistically, we’re not happy. Over 54% of us report being overwhelmed with clutter, and 78% of us have no idea how to overcome it! There are tons of topics on organizing and decluttering out there to help us deal with all of our stuff and the stress it causes us.

Thomas Gilovich, a researcher at Cornell University, spent more than a decade on the subject. He explored why experiences contribute more to happiness than stuff. He found that experiences are a uniting factor. You’re more likely to bond with someone who enjoys the same hobby or has traveled to the same places as you.

Even the anticipation leading up to a family trip, event, or experience has the potential to give happiness. This makes it the gift that keeps on giving! Happiness in anticipation, during the experience, and in the memories. Beats the heck out of a pile of toys you trip over while tucking the kids in at night!

Experience Gifts: The Importance for Kids

Shared family time (even at family dinners) is drastically important for a child’s well-being. Much more important than the toys we give them or the dozens of extracurricular activities we often neglect family time for.

There are lots of reasons to have shared family time and experiences, including:

  • bonding within the family
  • fewer behavioral problems in children
  • a stronger sense of identity and sense of security
  • higher rates of academic success
  • lower rates of violence

These shared experiences can be as simple as time spent together during meals, while driving, or reading stories before bed. Prioritizing shared experiences as gifts helps reduce unwanted material items while fostering family bonding. These ideas are great for Christmas or as a birthday gift.

53+ Ways to Give Experiences This Year

The average parent spends over $460 per child on toys and gifts each year! And about half of Americans are willing to go into debt over Christmas gifts. That just adds to our clutter and stress.

Experience gifts are great because they reduce clutter, give kids something to look forward to, and promote bonding.

Experience Gift Ideas For Parents and Families

Bigger experiences, like memberships or vacations, are often family gifts. It’s a fun way to check a few things off of your bucket list. Or try a new activity as a family, ranging from kayaking or rafting to setting up a zipline at home in the backyard. Feeling adventurous? Schedule a hot air balloon ride!

Season Passes or Memberships

  • Museum Memberships – Look into which local museums offer annual memberships near you. Some even offer discounts for local residents or have programs for kids.
  • Science Center Memberships – Many cities have an interactive children’s museum or science center with an annual pass option. Sometimes these end up costing less than one visit.
  • Orchestra Season Tickets – We have a local orchestra that performs every few months. I found children’s season tickets to be extremely affordable (less than $8 a show). It’s now a fun family activity.
  • Community Theater Tickets – If you have a local theater, buy season tickets. If you can’t buy one for each member of your family, buy two. Parents can go to the more grown-up plays as date nights, and then Mom or Dad can alternate taking the kids for special nights.
  • Sporting Events – Any professional or college teams in your area? Purchase season tickets to your favorite sport. Or if that’s too expensive, buy tickets to one game. My family loves baseball, and it’s been a great outing that lasts all summer.
  • Nature Center Tickets – Check for local nature preserves or nature centers in your area and see if they offer an annual pass. I’ve found these for nature centers, a local cave, and state parks.
  • The Zoo – Many zoos offer season passes and some have exclusive benefits for members.
  • Local Attraction Season Passes – Any other local attraction with a season pass can be a great gift. Check for other types of museums, historical sites, or local attractions.

Family Activities

  • Camping Tent – Sometimes, a material gift leads to an experience. This tent was a family gift a couple of years ago, and we’ve used it quite a few times. I picked this one because it’s easy to set up!
  • New Family Hobbies – Get the necessary equipment or passes to take up a new family hobby. Try hiking, camping, card games, a sport, or another fun activity.
  • Escape Room – This is an ideal group activity that Mom, Dad, and older kids can do with extended family for some fun quality time. Check to make sure the theme is family-friendly.
  • Be Puzzled – Feeling brave? This 33,600-piece puzzle is the world’s largest. It might take you the whole year to put together and will foster a LOT of family time!
  • Fun Family Outing– You don’t have to go all the way to the Grand Canyon or New York City to have a fun family trip. Visit an amusement park, take a local food tour, or plan a family staycation. Remember, looking forward to an experience makes the experience more fun and fosters happiness on its own!
  • Volunteer – Truly a gift that keeps on giving. If your kids are old enough, volunteer at a local food pantry or charity. Give your kids (and yourself) the gift of helping others!
  • Give to Charity – Another favorite in our family. We designate $100 per child, and they decide where to give it. They love choosing gifts like farm animals, fruit trees, or educational supplies for those in need around the world through programs like Food for the Poor.

Best Experience Gifts for Kids

Kids love learning new things or spending time doing their favorite activities. It’s always special to spend one-on-one time with their parents. Experiences are a great way to give them both!

Learn or Perfect a Skill

  • Local Pottery Painting – An absolute favorite with my girls. Our local pottery place has dozens of options to paint. This has been a fun activity for the kids (and me!).
  • Pottery Making – For older kids, some places offer pottery-making lessons or classes.
  • New Skill – Does your child want to try horseback riding, cooking, sewing, painting, or another similar activity? Give them classes for a new hobby or skill. You can even buy virtual classes through sites like Udemy. Or, to keep costs down, look at your local recreation center, or ask a family member to teach your child. Here are my favorite cooking classes for kids.
  • Rock Climbing – Have a local rock-climbing gym? See if they offer annual passes or pick-up gift certificates for a climbing outing with older kids. Bonus: It’s a great way to get exercise too!
  • Learning Magazine Monthly Subscription – Our kids love getting “real mail” in the mailbox. This is one gift my extended family members often get for them. They look forward to it coming each month and doing the activities.
  • Craft Bucket – One of my favorite Christmas gifts as a child: a basket of craft activities that lasted me all year! My aunt filled a large basket with scissors, paper, glue, string, and every craft supply imaginable. It led to hours of fun for me. My kids love getting these baskets, plus books about how to draw, art kits, sticker pads, construction paper, and other craft kits.
  • Musical Instrument – A favorite gift one Christmas was a steel drum for my kids. Though I admit, on a couple of especially loud days, I have regretted the idea! This is the one I got, and they’ve loved learning to play it. I also ordered mini musical instrument kits.
  • Music Lessons – Along with their new instrument, you can gift them some music lessons. Piano or guitar lessons are popular, but there’s also violin, harp, and even ukulele!
  • Subscription Box – The gift that keeps on giving! Kids love getting these regularly in the mail and you can choose from a wide variety of activities. KiwiCo has art, STEM, or geography boxes, while CrateJoy offers everything from arts and crafts to gardening or alien paraphenalia!

Active Experiences

  • Local Jump Gym – Another fun activity that helps kids stay active. See if you have a local jump gym or indoor trampoline center and get annual passes or gift cards.
  • Batting Cage Membership – For a child who loves baseball, look for a local batting cage. Some offer year-long memberships or bulk discounts on packages. This is a great way to stay active and have a fun outing together.
  • Bowling or Skate Tickets – If you have a local bowling alley or skating rink, ask about family passes or gift certificates. Roller skating and ice skating are both fun.
  • Every Kid in a Park – If you have a fourth grader, there’s no excuse not to get this one. It’s a free year-long park pass to all the national parks. It provides access to everyone in your immediate family, not just the fourth grader. (Here’s how to get it.)
  • Treasure Hunt – If you’re giving a material gift, make it a fun experience. Instead of wrapping it up, create a scavenger hunt for the child to find the final gift. This is especially fun for a larger gift or experience.
  • Geocaching – Speaking of treasure hunts, geocaching is a fun, free way to go on a treasure hunt with your kids almost anywhere in the world. You can learn more about it here.

Family Time

  • Lunch Dates – Give vouchers to a favorite breakfast or lunch place to a child and plan a one-on-one date with them.
  • Movie Tickets – We don’t go to the movies often, but sometimes there are some great family movies coming out around Christmastime.
  • Question Book – My kids all love this Question A Day Book, and it gives us a fun conversation starter each day.
  • Garden Kit – Just like crafts, gardening is a great activity to do with children. If you have a budding gardener (pun intended), wrap up some seeds and gardening supplies and let your child help you garden all year!
  • Movie Night Packages – My children don’t watch much TV, but we love family movie nights. To make it even more fun, I wrap up a new DVD and some healthy snacks for each child to let them “host” the movie night.
  • Game Night Packages – Giving each child one game is a fun way to expand our collection. And they love playing “their game” when we have a game night. Some favorites are Apples to Apples, Tsuro, Sequence, and basic card games.
  • DIY Kits – My kids enjoy getting the supplies to make DIY items together (like this DIY Christmas garland) or give them as gifts. This paper-making kit was an especially big hit. Bonus: they’re learning new skills too!
  • Learn a Language – Learn Spanish, Italian, or even Japanese together. Programs like Talk Box offer an easy and natural way to learn together as a family through everyday conversation.

Experience Gifts for Men

Check out this post for ideas of usable, practical gifts that dads will enjoy (and that help them be healthier, sleep better, etc.). In my experience, guys are the toughest to find experience-based gifts for. But here are a few ideas that have been a hit over the years:

  • Home Brewing – For the guy who loves beer, give him an organic (or at least non-GMO) home brewing kit. There are pre-made brewing kits but go to a local homebrew store if possible to find out what supplies and ingredients he’ll need.
  • Sports – Tickets to see his favorite teams play can be a big hit. These tend to be more expensive, so you may have to save for a while, but they can make for an amazing and memorable experience!
  • Outdoor Activities – This will vary depending on the guy, but finding outdoor experiences he already loves is a great gift idea. This might be finding time to camp as a family or for him to go hunting, hiking, or playing sports like golf.
  • Scuba Certification – Why not give each other scuba certifications as a gift? Go through the process together and then enjoy a great hobby together.
  • Skydiving – Is your guy adventurous? Skydiving is a ton of fun, and many cities have a local place you can go. They can also do indoor skydiving if they’re not feeling quite as adventurous.

Experience Gifts for Women

Memes abound online about moms enjoying going to the bathroom alone. Here’s a fun list of material gifts for mom for the perfect gift. But moms also love experiences too!

  • Day(s) Off – One of my favorite gifts ever was a series of “days off” that I didn’t have to cook, clean, or have any household responsibilities (and it included a gift card to go out for coffee!). Instead, other family members can take over mom’s tasks.
  • Dance Lessons – If you have a local dance studio or ballroom dance club she might like taking lessons there. Ballroom dance is a fun way to connect as a couple. Adult ballet or tap is also making a comeback if she prefers to go solo.
  • Painting Session – These sessions are a great way to learn and have fun while being creative. Treat mom to a night of painting, even better if it’s with a few best friends.
  • Wine Tasting – It would be great to get her a trip to Napa or Italy, but not everyone can do that. Instead, arrange an in-home wine tasting. Dry Farm Wine has wine gift boxes that will ship straight to your door.
  • Spa Day – All moms can use some pampering! Plus, it’s something mom may only do if it’s a gift. Massages are my favorite!
  • Date Nights – A couples getaway or time alone can be tough with kids. Give mom a pre-planned date night and handle all the arrangements, line up a sitter, and make the plans.
  • Craft or Hobby Supplies – Some new yarn, drawing supplies, or even an adult coloring book are all great experience gifts for moms. You can get art supplies here.
  • Meal Kit Subscription – While I love my meal planner app, some days I don’t feel like cooking. For the healthy foodie, I like the meals from The Good Kitchen and Daily Harvest.
  • Nap or Getting to Sleep In – This may be one of the toughest gifts to pull off, but definitely one of the most appreciated. If you can figure out how to do it, she’ll be grateful!
  • Any Family Gifts – Any of the family gifts listed above are also a great option to get for moms. They’ll enjoy the family bonding and the idea of an activity to do with the kids.

Gifts for Grandparents + Extended Family

Often our loved ones don’t need any more material gifts or just really appreciate experiences. I’ve found these to be really popular options with my family members.

  • Day Out with Kids – The kids pick a fun activity to do with grandparents and give it as a gift. It could be something like going out for smoothies, playing at the park, or going to the store to gather ingredients to cook a meal together.
  • Window Garden – Sometimes it’s harder for grandparents to get down in the dirt like they used to. A windowsill garden with herbs is a great way to have flavorful spices all year long and have fun gardening. My kids and I love this countertop version from Aerotop.
  • Memory Book – I love making a photo book with a company like Mixbook that showcases favorite memories with the giftee. Or let your kids make a homemade scrapbook by printing and cutting out pictures and writing captions.
  • Membership Add-Ons – For grandparents who live close by, add them to any of the family memberships listed above. This lets them come for free and spend time with the kids. And as a bonus, you have extra eyes to help with the kids.

Experience Gifts: The Bottom Line

Even if you’ve already purchased gifts this year, consider adding some experiences as well. Or slowly transition to more experience-based gifts. Family time and memories are worth so much more than piles of toys.

Have you given experiences instead of gifts in the past? What other suggestions would you add to this list?

8 Thoughtful Last Minute Gift Ideas

8 Thoughtful Last Minute Gift Ideas

Have I ever told you about Operation Popcorn & PJ’s — the night where my husband and I tell our kids to get ready for bed as usual, then surprise them at the last minute by piling them into the car with gingerbread cookies to drive around and look at holiday lights?

Most years we plan it for a certain day, then reschedule the mission because another activity takes way longer than expected, or I forget an ingredient for the cookies, or . . . life.

All that to say, if you planned to have your holiday shopping done by now and life got in the way, I get it. Here are seven last minute gift ideas that are truly thoughtful and don’t scream “I picked this up at the grocery store fifteen minutes ago.”

Or if you prefer – here are some homemade gift ideas that turn out beautifully and don’t require any special skills.

1. Toups & Co. Gift Card

Toups & Co. is one of my longtime favorites for natural skincare and makeup – their ingredients lists are short, recognizable, and intentionally simple.

Instead of guessing shades or skin needs, a Toups & Co. gift card lets your recipient choose exactly what works for them—their favorite lipstick colors, the right foundation match, and skincare that supports their goals.

Something to put under the tree:

  • A small beauty bag or zip pouch
  • A natural-bristle makeup brush tied with ribbon
  • A simple card explaining the gift

2. Purity Coffee Gift Subscription

Purity Coffee Gift Subscription (SAVE 20% WITH CODE MP20) –  For the houses that run on laughter, love, and really good coffee. Purity is the only brand I’ve found that’s certified organic and screened for mold, mycotoxins, pesticides, and other things you don’t want in your morning cup.

Their gift subscription delivers fresh, antioxidant-rich coffee to your giftee every month – available in whole bean or ground – and you can prepay for 3 or 6 months.

3. The Making Herbal Preparations 101 Course from Herbal Academy

Perfect for the curious beginner herbalist, this course covers the four basic categories of herbal preparations, 12 everyday safe herbs to use at home, and 33 DIY herbal recipes from teas and tinctures to salves and oils.

This course will guide your recipient through 7 convenient and compact lessons that are chock-full of hands-on activities, videos, and helpful herbal charts to guide them on their way to making herbal preparations at home.

Something to put under the tree:

  • Tie a handwritten card with course details to a small hunk of beeswax (often found at health food stores) that your recipient can use to make herbal salves
  • Tie a fresh sprig of rosemary to the outside of a card with details inside

4. PACT Gift Card

If your recipient loves organic cotton basics, sustainable wardrobe staples, and ultra-comfy loungewear, a Pact gift card is an easy choice.

Their pieces are soft, well-made, and built for everyday comfort – and the gift card lets them choose the styles they’ll reach for most.

GIVE A PACT GIFT CARD

5. Kids Cook Real Food eCourse

Your kids learn an essential skill they need in order to eat healthy, and someone makes dinner instead of you.

The Kids Cook Real Food Course is taught by my friend Katie, a trained teacher with a passion for making sure our children know how to nourish themselves well before they head off to college.

Something to put under the tree:

Cute little aprons or whisks.

6. Wishgarden Herbs Gift Card

WishGarden makes blends loved by frequent travelers, athletes, new moms, and not so new moms . . . and a gift card is a wonderful option if you’re not sure which formulas your recipient would love most.

They offer herbal supports for sleep, stress, immune health, digestion, and more – so your giftee can pick exactly what they need.

7. Green Kid Crafts Subscription

When my kids were younger they loved their Green Kid Crafts excavation kit and detective kit, which taught them how to dust for fingerprints and write messages using different “invisible ink” techniques.

Something to put under the tree: A note telling your recipient to expect something fun in the mail. (Kids love mail!)

8. Thrive Market Membership

If your gift recipient loves discovering better-for-you brands but not grocery store chaos, this is the perfect fit. Thrive Market is basically Whole Foods meets Costco – only everything ships straight to their doorstep.

With a membership, they’ll save 25–55% on organic pantry staples, clean beauty, home goods, supplements, and so much more. It’s the kind of gift that makes everyday life easier (and healthier!).

Gifting it is simple: scroll to the bottom of the Thrive Market page and select “Give Gift Card.” You can even include a starting shopping credit so they can stock up on their favorites right away.

Something to put under the tree: Something to put under the tree:

  • A small treat they can actually buy on Thrive, like artisan chocolate
  • A pretty kitchen towel + wooden spoon
  • A few glass canisters to organize their new pantry goodies

Antioxidants in skincare: Myths v/s facts

Antioxidants in skincare: Myths v/s facts

Follow this guide

What’s the story

Antioxidants are a hot topic in skincare, with many swearing by their ability to protect and rejuvenate skin.
But, with so many myths floating around, it can be difficult to know what’s true and what’s not.
This article aims to debunk some common myths about antioxidants in skincare, giving you a clearer picture of their role and effectiveness.

Myth: All antioxidants are the same

Not all antioxidants are created equal.
Each antioxidant has its own properties and benefits, which can differ from one another.
For instance, vitamin C is known for brightening skin and boosting collagen production, while vitamin E is known for its moisturizing properties.
Knowing the difference can help you choose the right antioxidant for your skincare needs.

Myth: More is better

More isn’t always better when it comes to antioxidants in skincare products.
Using too many can irritate or overwhelm the skin, leading to adverse reactions.
It’s important to stick to recommended usage guidelines and give your skin time to adjust to new products before increasing application frequency or concentration.

Myth: Antioxidants work instantly

Many think antioxidants give instant results, but that’s not the case.
They work over time by neutralizing free radicals that cause premature aging and dullness.
Consistent use of antioxidant-rich products can improve skin texture and tone gradually, not overnight.

Myth: Sunscreen makes antioxidants unnecessary

While sunscreen is a must for protecting against UV damage, it doesn’t replace the need for antioxidants in your skincare routine.
Antioxidants fight free radicals generated by environmental stressors such as pollution and UV rays, which sunscreen alone cannot do.
Using both together gives you better protection against skin damage.

Myth: Natural sources are always better

Though natural sources of antioxidants, like plant extracts, are often considered better, they may not always be more effective than synthetic ones.
The efficacy of an antioxidant depends on its formulation and concentration in a product rather than its source alone.

Brits switch cosmetics out for skincare

Brits switch cosmetics out for skincare

Skincare is having a glow-up. Together, male and female skincare have racked up an extra  £69.1m over the past year. That’s nearly 70% of the £100.2m growth across the beauty and male grooming categories.

“Female and male skincare are both growing in value and volume, fuelled by the ingredient-focused trend and the popularity of K-beauty in female skincare, as well as the expanding skincare routines adopted by male consumers,” says Kevin Chen, senior analytics executive at NIQ.

K-beauty, of course, refers to the seemingly unstoppable rise of Korean skincare trends, such as sheet masks and serums that promote a ‘glass skin’ look. One Korean skincare product sells every 30 seconds in Boots, according to its Beauty Trends Report 2025.

The retailer named #CBeauty, or Chinese beauty, as the natural successor to that throne. “Chinese Beauty totalled 1.2 billion views on TikTok in 2024,” the report reveals. “It is exploding onto the scene thanks to a 32.5% increase in beauty exports from China in the first half of 2024.”

The growing interest in international skincare has coincided with a rising focus on ingredients. Both are a sign of consumers valuing “science-backed solutions that are easy to follow and effective”, says Teresa Tan, founder of aesthetic & health clinic Tan & Co.

She names peptides, exosomes and kojic acid as ingredients that are increasingly capturing the public attention.

Demand is also growing for more run-of-the-mill claims, such as a high SPF. “Traditionally, the only time people would use an SPF product would be in suncream lotion and on holidays, but people have changed, and they want it more in everyday use,” says Ian Morley, VP of sales for P&G Northern Europe.

P&G jumped on that trend with the spring launch of Olay Vitamin C Brighten & Glow 3in1 Moisturiser Face Fluid SPF50+, which offers  “lightweight, high protection” without stickiness or greasiness.

Olay is now worth £54.8m, while P&G stablemate Garnier is nearing the £100m mark.

By comparison, male skincare may seem like small fry. The entire market is worth just £75.4m. However, it’s delivering encouraging volume growth of 3.9%.

That’s a sign of men “refining their routines and looking for products that deliver more”, says male grooming brand Harry’s.

That more discerning approach has persisted even as inflation has taken its toll. “Shoppers are still seeking quality but at a great price, and this has seen them drawn to challenger brands that bring new innovation and energy into the category,” says Olly Walker, grooming expert at Harry’s.

As such, Harry’s is the only top five player  in razors & blades and shaving preparations to be in value growth. Across both categories, the challenger has grown 4.1% to just over £17m.

However, P&G’s Gillette brand remains the dominant force. It’s 15 times the size of Harry’s, with a value of £257.8m in the razors & blades and shaving prep markets.

It’s fighting an 8.1% volume decline in shaving preparations and 3.9% fall in razors & blades with innovation.

“In the last year, we’ve brought new blades with breakthrough lubrication technology, which helps bring an effortless shave in one stroke,” says P&G’s Morley.

“It comes as no surprise that Gillette continues to win trial and trust with consumers, with data from Worldpanel showing 92% loyalty amongst our blades and razors shoppers.”

By contrast, that loyalty is proving ever harder to come by in the cosmetics market. On the face of it, brands should be made up – sales have broken the £1bn barrier for the first time. However, volumes have dipped 0.4%. And as budgets tighten, consumers are shopping around more for the best deal.

High/low beauty

Boots names high/low beauty as one of the key trends in its Beauty Trends Report 2025. More than a third of Boots Advantage Card members shopped both budget-friendly and premium cosmetics in 2024, it reveals.

“Shoppers are blending products from both ends of the spectrum. Akin to fashionistas curating a capsule wardrobe, they are investing in trusted classics and luxury staples while experimenting with fleeting trends and affordable brands,” the retailer says.

That is exemplified by the products trending on TikTok. At the beginning of the year, Prada Beauty’s refillable lip balm – which retails  at £39 for 3.8g – was doing the rounds.

Equally popular on the platform though was Rimmel’s Multi Tasker Jelly Crush (see Top Launch), which retails at a more affordable cost of £10.99 for 8.5g. For that price, shoppers get a cheek and lip tint with a “vibrant, juicy” finish, a look made popular by singer Sabrina Carpenter, who’s famously never seen without her trademark blush.

It may not be enough to turn the tide for cosmetics though. NIQ’s Chen says overall cosmetics sales are being dampened by “a rising trend toward more ‘natural’ looks”. As a result, he suggests skincare will continue to outpace cosmetics in the year ahead.

Seems like beauty might just be skin deep, after all.

Top Launch 2025

Rimmel Multi Tasker Jelly Crush | Coty

‘Jelly donut blush’ was named a viral TikTok trend by Glamour in 2024. It involves using just the right amount of jelly-like highlighter and blush to create perfectly highlighted, glowy – or ‘glazed’ – cheekbones. In January, Rimmel jumped on the trend with the launch of Multi Tasker Jelly Crush for both lips and cheeks. Available at just £10.99 for 8.5g in Superdrug, it plays perfectly into the rise in budget beauty. With those credentials, Rimmel might just have crushed it.

What foods helps clear skin? Skincare expert issues advice

What foods helps clear skin? Skincare expert issues advice

As the colder months creep up on us, the temperature change can wreak havoc on our bodies and make it difficult for us to look and feel our best.

This is why specialist skincare pharmacist Yasar Hussain has warned that the drop in temperature and lower humidity, paired with harsh winds, can be abrasive on our skin.

For example, these conditions can cause damage to capillary beds in the skin, leading to redness and sensitivity.

Skincare expert warns against skin damage over the winter

Discussing the challenges winter poses for our skin, Mr Hussain from prescription dermatology service MiQuest said: “Winter can be a challenging time for our skin, and it will have different needs in the colder, darker months than it does at other times of the year.

“The combination of cold, wet air our skin is exposed to outdoors, and the warm, dry air of indoor central heating can certainly leave it looking and feeling less than its best.

“The so-called winter uglies are a very real experience for many people at this time of year, but thankfully, there are a number of easy and effective ways to tackle them.

“It’s vital to keep skin properly hydrated through winter, which you can do through applying moisturiser each day, eating healthy fats, avoiding dehydrating caffeine and alcohol and drinking plenty of water.

“Another tip is to avoid hot showers, which can strip the skin’s barrier of its natural oils, and protect your skin from the harsh weather as much as possible by covering up key areas such as your face, neck and hands where possible.

“Being aware of the different challenges your skin faces at this time of year and how to avoid them can go a long way.”

Skincare expert shares 5 things you need to do if you want perfect skin this winter

Here are his top five skincare tips to help your skin look its best this winter.

Keep your skin moisturised

Colder temperatures and a drop in air humidity, as well as warm, dry air indoors, can disrupt the skin barrier and make it harder to keep moisture locked in.

This is why it is important to ensure your skin is protected against moisture loss, which can lead to issues like dry, itchy and dull skin.

An easy way is to ensure you are drinking enough water, or make changes to your skincare routine, such as adopting a moisturising cleanser or a richer moisturiser.

Avoid harsh chemicals

Our skin produces its own natural oils, such as sebum, to moisturise and protect itself, but harsh chemicals in creams, oils and other skincare products can strip these away.

In winter, it’s better to switch to more natural cleansers and moisturisers with fewer chemicals, alcohols and fragrances.

Instead, opt for products high in organic ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter, peptides and aloe vera.

Wrap up for the weather

British wintertime is often not for the faint of heart, and powerful storms, driving rain and gale force winds can all take their toll on our skin.

Keep key areas such as the face, neck and hands covered up while outdoors to protect against windburn or irritation.

A good lip balm is also a useful weapon to keep dry, cracked skin at bay.

Avoid hot showers

Many people enjoy a hot shower in winter, but it can cause disruption to the skin’s barrier and strip it of much-needed moisture.

While taking a hot shower every so often won’t wreak havoc on your skin, too many hot showers can gradually strip away the natural oils, weaken the barrier and increase transepidermal water loss.

Instead, it’s better to keep the temperature at a moderate level and not spend too much time exposed to hot water.

Tweak your diet

What we eat and drink plays a vital role in keeping our skin at its best, and healthy fats can play a huge role in maintaining our skin barrier and locking in moisture.

They can be found in a range of food items, including avocado, oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, nuts and seeds.

Meanwhile, other skin-friendly nutrients are worth getting into your diet, including vitamin A, found in spinach, vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, and zinc, which is found in beef, poultry and shellfish.

5 Holiday 2025 Makeup Trends That Bring Maximum Glam

5 Holiday 2025 Makeup Trends That Bring Maximum Glam

The Target in Soho was the hardest door in New York City this week — and I’m only being a little facetious. Olivia Ponton, Evan Mock, Paloma Elsesser, and Sai De Silva were all milling around the newly redesigned store, where the entrance corridor is now a walk-through bullseye. That’s where I ran into the guest of the evening: Katie Jane Hughes, whose curated beauty edit was displayed front and center on the first floor.

If anyone was going to handpick a lineup of drugstore-priced staples, it’s Hughes. The celebrity makeup artist — known for her work with Dua Lipa and affectionately dubbed “the internet’s go-to makeup artist” — has built a loyal following on Instagram and TikTok by sharing tutorials and tricks (like pinpoint shading) and reminding everyone that technique matters more than trends.

Still, Hughes — both online and in her own aesthetic — has found a way to blend the two, and her look that night proved it. She rocked a monochrome “toasted” moment with brown eyeshadow, a matching lip, and a warm wash of blush. Admittedly, saying “toasted makeup” out loud couldn’t be more embarrassing — but Hughes just laughed. “Listen, nothing is new anymore,” she said. “Remember the blueberry milk nail trend? It’s just baby blue. But if it gets someone excited to try something new when they normally only wear beige, then I think it’s amazing.”

Her Target beauty edit has the same effect. It’s packed with products that might nudge you outside your comfort zone or help you double down on the classics — like the Real Techniques brush and sponge set; Prequel’s Nourishing Oil Cleanser for the skin care-obsessed; e.l.f.’s viral Halo Glow Blush; and Maybelline’s Serum Lipstick in 005, her pick for “the perfect peachy tone.”

Below, Hughes shares her picks of the buzziest holiday makeup trends of the season — all of which you can pull off with the products above.

1Tightlining & Micro Wings

“We’re moving into a more delicate, whispery wing. The trick is to keep it really close to the lash line as opposed to committing to anything too big.”

2Frosty Pink Monochrome

“It’s the best color ever. Put it everywhere — on the eyes, lips, Cupid’s bow, cheeks. I’m obsessed. Anything shimmery or frosty just looks opulent.”

3The New Red Lip

“Red lips have gotten an update in that they’re more sheer than opaque or matte. It feels a bit like you’ve put a powder eyeshadow on your lips, buffed it in, and layered clear balm over the top. It’s not a wet or dry look. It’s lined with a contour pen — almost like a Korean-kissed, powdery pout.”

4“Cinnamon Girl” Tones

“Beiges, browns, and berries — as opposed to bright red — can be more versatile, especially if you think about every product in your makeup bag as multi-use. If you’ve got an eyebrow pencil with two ends, use it as your eyeliner. If you’ve got a blush that’s cream, use it on your lips. If you’ve got an eyebrow pencil that works with your skin tone, use it as a lip liner.”

5Satin Skin

“2016 makeup is coming back, but in a more elevated way. The skin isn’t as heavy. Maybe the eye and lip are bold, but the complexion has an editorial finish. Getting that satin skin really starts with the prep. Exfoliate with a face cloth — literally go downstairs at Target and buy a five-pack of any thin washcloth that has a little bit of abrasion to it. Your skin is going to take the makeup like butter.”

Essential winter skincare tips to keep your skin soft and glowing

Essential winter skincare tips to keep your skin soft and glowing

During the winter season, our body requires extra care, especially the skin, which can easily become dry, itchy, and rough due to cold winds and low humidity.

If you want your skin to remain soft, glowing, and refreshed even in winter, adopting a few simple yet effective precautions can help maintain your daily skincare routine.

Cleansing and bathing:

Proper cleansing and bathing are essential. Long, hot showers may feel comforting during winter but strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and itchiness. Experts recommend using lukewarm water and limiting showers to 10–15 minutes. Immediately after bathing, when your skin is slightly damp, apply a moisturizer or cream to lock in moisture.

Moisturizing and skin protection:

Moisturizing is crucial as cold air draws moisture out of the skin. Use a quality moisturizer containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, or oils. Thick creams or oils are preferable over light, water-based lotions, especially for rough or dry skin. Pay extra attention to hands, elbows, ankles, and other areas most affected by the cold.

Use gentle and mild cleansers for washing. Soaps and fragranced washes can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Opt for sulfate-free, color- and fragrance-free cleansers or cream-based washes.

Use of humidifiers:

Indoor heating, air conditioners, or solar heaters can dry out the air, which in turn dries out the skin. A small humidifier in your room or office can restore moisture to the air, slowing down the drying process of your skin.

Exfoliating dead skin cells:

For a fresh and radiant look, include light exfoliation in your skincare routine but avoid overdoing it. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing new ones to breathe, while a gentle scrub ensures the protective skin layer is not damaged.

Healthy diet and hydration:

Alongside external care, maintaining internal health is equally important. Drinking sufficient water daily helps retain skin moisture, and in dry winter conditions, dehydration can worsen skin dryness. Additionally, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and other nutrients—like fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables—support skin elasticity and radiance.

Protection from ultraviolet rays:

Do not forget sunscreen, regardless of winter or summer! Even when sunlight is weak, UV rays are present. Apply SPF sunscreen before going outdoors, including on snowy or damp days, to protect your skin from UV damage and dryness.

Winter skincare requires effort but is essential. Short lukewarm showers, gentle cleansers, moisturizing creams and oils, humidifiers, a nutritious diet, adequate water intake, soft clothing, and sunscreen together create an environment in which your skin can remain soft, healthy, and glowing despite the cold.
