Boomers who still get compliments on their appearance tend to follow these 8 routines most people underestimate – VegOut

Boomers who still get compliments on their appearance tend to follow these 8 routines most people underestimate – VegOut

Ever notice how some boomers just seem to glow with vitality while others their age look, well, tired?

Last week at the farmers’ market where I volunteer, I watched a woman in her seventies receive three separate compliments on her radiant skin and overall appearance within the span of an hour. What struck me wasn’t just the compliments themselves, but her response. She didn’t brush them off or act surprised. She simply smiled, said thank you, and continued selecting her organic vegetables with the energy of someone half her age.

This got me thinking about the boomers in my life who consistently turn heads and receive genuine compliments about their appearance. After years of observation and countless conversations, I’ve noticed they all share certain routines that most of us completely overlook or dismiss as too simple to matter.

The fascinating part? These aren’t expensive treatments or complicated regimens. They’re deceptively simple habits that compound over decades into visible results.

1. They protect their skin religiously from sun damage

While the rest of us were slathering on tanning oil in our twenties, these boomers were already wearing SPF 30 daily. One seventy-something friend told me she started wearing sunscreen on her face and hands every single day since 1975, rain or shine.

“People thought I was paranoid,” she laughed, showing me her remarkably smooth hands next to mine. The difference was striking.

They don’t just wear sunscreen at the beach. They apply it before their morning coffee, reapply if they’re outside for extended periods, and many wear wide-brimmed hats without caring if it messes up their hair. This single habit alone accounts for so much of their youthful appearance that dermatologists often guess their age as ten to fifteen years younger.

2. They move their bodies every single day

Not gym sessions. Not CrossFit. Just consistent, daily movement.

The boomers who get compliments have been walking, swimming, dancing, or gardening nearly every day for decades. One gentleman I know has walked his neighborhood loop every morning since 1982. Another woman has been doing gentle yoga stretches while her coffee brews for thirty years.

When I took up trail running at 28 to manage work stress, I thought I was being proactive. These folks started moving daily in their twenties and never stopped. Now in their sixties and seventies, they have the posture, flexibility, and energy that makes them appear decades younger. Their secret? They never let a day go by without some form of movement, even if it’s just a ten-minute walk around the block.

3. They hydrate like it’s their job

Watch a boomer who looks great for their age, and you’ll notice they’re constantly sipping water. Not fancy vitamin water or energy drinks. Just plain water, sometimes with lemon.

They figured out decades ago what we’re just learning from Instagram wellness influencers. Proper hydration affects everything from skin elasticity to energy levels. One woman told me she’s been drinking eight glasses of water daily since the 1970s when her mother-in-law suggested it would help her complexion. “Back then, people thought I was weird carrying a water bottle everywhere,” she said. Now everyone does it, but she’s been reaping the benefits for fifty years.

4. They go to bed at the same time every night

While we’re scrolling phones at midnight, these boomers are already three hours into their sleep cycle. They treat bedtime like a non-negotiable appointment, usually between 9:30 and 10:30 PM, and they stick to it even on weekends.

The consistency matters more than the exact time. Their bodies have adapted to a rhythm that supports cellular repair, hormone regulation, and all those processes that keep us looking and feeling young. They wake up naturally, without alarms, looking refreshed while the rest of us are mainlining coffee to function.

One friend jokes that she’s been “boring” about bedtime since college, but her skin looks like she’s had thousands of dollars of treatments. She hasn’t. She’s just been getting eight hours of quality sleep for forty-plus years.

5. They eat real food, mostly plants

These boomers aren’t following the latest diet trends. They’ve been eating basically the same way since the 1970s: whole foods, lots of vegetables, moderate portions.

They shop the perimeter of grocery stores, cook most of their meals at home, and treat processed foods as occasional treats rather than staples. Many of them started this way of eating before it was trendy, often for economic reasons. “We couldn’t afford to eat out much when the kids were young,” one woman explained, “so I learned to cook everything from scratch.”

As someone who went vegan years ago, I appreciate how ahead of their time they were. They were eating kale before it was a superfood and limiting sugar before we knew about inflammation. The result? Clear skin, healthy weight maintenance, and energy levels that put younger folks to shame.

6. They maintain genuine social connections

The boomers who look vibrant have something beyond good skin: they radiate warmth and engagement that comes from meaningful relationships. They’ve maintained friendships for decades, meet regularly with groups, and prioritize face-to-face interaction over digital communication.

Research backs this up completely. Social connection affects our physical appearance through stress reduction, immune function, and even cellular aging. These folks have book clubs, walking groups, volunteer commitments, and regular coffee dates that keep them engaged and glowing with social vitality.

7. They practice stress management without calling it that

Long before meditation apps existed, these boomers were managing stress through simple daily practices. Some garden. Others do crossword puzzles. Many have a morning routine of quiet coffee and newspaper reading that serves as meditation without the label.

Initially, I thought meditation was too “woo-woo” for my analytical mind, but these practical boomers showed me that stress management doesn’t need to be complicated. They’ve been taking deep breaths, going for walks when upset, and maintaining perspective for decades. The result shows in their faces: fewer worry lines, less tension, more genuine smiles.

8. They moisturize consistently and simply

Forget ten-step skincare routines. The boomers with great skin have been using the same basic moisturizer for decades. They apply it after washing their face in the morning and before bed. That’s it.

One woman showed me her bottle of Pond’s Cold Cream. “Same brand since 1969,” she said proudly. Her skin looked like silk.

They don’t chase every new serum or treatment. They found something that worked and stuck with it, applying it consistently through pregnancies, career changes, and everything life threw at them. The compound effect of this simple habit over fifty years beats any expensive treatment.

Final thoughts

What strikes me most about these routines is their simplicity. No expensive equipment, complicated procedures, or exclusive products. Just consistent daily habits maintained over decades.

The boomers who still turn heads didn’t discover a fountain of youth. They discovered the power of compound interest applied to health and appearance. Small actions, repeated daily for forty or fifty years, create remarkable results.

Looking at them now, glowing with vitality in their sixties and seventies, I’m reminded that the habits we build today determine how we’ll look and feel decades from now. Maybe we should spend less time searching for the next quick fix and more time adopting these simple, time-tested routines that actually work.

The best part? You can start any of these today. Pick one, make it a habit, and trust the process. Your future self will thank you.

Skincare Routines of Bollywood Celebrities That Actually Work

93

Most of us don’t provide the best services to our skin until it starts acting up. Dullness, sudden breakouts, fine lines, or uneven texture are some of the warning signs your skin tells you it’s time you take care of it. Just like your body, your skin goes through pollution, late nights, and stress. That’s where these Bollywood celebrities bring great skincare routines that help us have healthy and glowing skin.

No one cares for their skin like Kriti Sanon and Madhuri Dixit. Right from the early years, the actresses have designed a strict routine for their skin from morning to night. The beauty stars shared some great tips from their routines, highlighting beauty brands and ways to use them.

Real Skincare Routine That Actually Works

A real skincare routine is not just about relying on quick fixes but about keeping things simple and balanced. Some days your skin may feel oily, dull, or exhausted, and on some days your skin may glow. The real secret lies in finding a balance between lifestyle habits and using good beauty brands.

Skin starts looking calm, gentle, and naturally glowy with simple adjustments and proper skincare products. It starts learning to fight pollution, exhaustion, sun exposure, and lack of sleep without immediate complaints.

Can Simple Skincare Actually Work

Modern skincare requires complex routines and many active ingredients. They may show quick results, but they do not last long. Bollywood celebrities often follow consistent and straightforward routines for their glamorous skin to look camera-ready, even when they get up. They stick to simple hydration, gentle exfoliation, and adequate sun protection.

The Core Idea Behind Everyday Skincare Habits

Morning Routine with Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri keeps her mornings simple, consistent, and skin-first.

  • She starts with a gentle cleanser to remove overnight buildup, followed by a toner to prep the skin.

  • Toner comes next to wake the skin up and prep it properly

  • Vitamin C is her glow hero. Brightens, supports collagen, keeps skin looking fresh

  • Moisturiser to lock everything in and keep skin comfortable all day

  • SPF is non-negotiable. Indoors, outdoors, cloudy days, always

Simple, disciplined, and very Madhuri. Consistency over complexity.

Evening routine: Madhuri Dixit

At the end of the day, Madhuri focuses on thorough cleansing and repair.

  • She begins with a cleansing balm to break down makeup and sunscreen,

  • followed by micellar water and makeup wipes for a deeper clean

  • A gentle cleanser ensures no residue is left behind.

  • She then applies toner, Vitamin C, and moisturiser to restore balance.

  • Under-eye cream targets fine lines and fatigue, while lip balm keeps lips soft overnight.

Morning routine: Kriti Sanon

Kriti’s morning skincare routine is calm, gentle, and very intuitive.

  • A key rule she follows is being kind to the skin, no harsh rubbing, no rushing. Slightly damp skin helps absorb most ingredients better

  • If you choose to use a toner, she suggests an alcohol-free one.

  • Vitamin C serum is best used in the morning since it acts as a powerful antioxidant, offers added protection against UV damage, brightens the skin, supports collagen, and softens fine lines.

  • Sunscreen is non-negotiable. She recommends choosing one that suits your skin type, cream or lotion for dry skin, gel for oily skin, ideally with ceramides to support the skin barrier.

  • Apply one sunscreen, let it absorb fully, then layer a tinted sunscreen on top rather than mixing products, as some formulas do not work well together and uneven layering can reduce protection.

  • Lip balm is just as important as face care. It helps prevent chapping and darkening and can even be gently applied on eyelids and the corners of the eyes.

Evening routine: Kriti Sanon

Kriti’s evening routine is all about hydration and barrier repair.

  • She starts by dampening her skin with rose water, then applies a niacinamide toner to refine and calm the skin.

  • A hydrating serum with peptides and hyaluronic acid boosts moisture, followed by a gentle retinol serum for skin renewal.

  • She seals everything in with a ceramide-rich moisturiser, making sure not to skip the neck.

  • Lip balm is applied generously, including near the eyes to help prevent crow’s feet.

  • For lashes and brows, she uses a mix of castor and olive oil to keep them nourished and strong.

Final Thoughts

These Bollywood celebrities believe that glam skin starts with an adequate skincare routine and consistency. Kriti Sanon and Madhuri Dixit’s skincare routines are thoughtful and easy to follow, giving fresh skin every single day.

A little care done consistently is the secret behind long-lasting, flawless skin. Start listening to your skin and customize the skincare routines. These skincare routines are practical and effective, leaving behind lasting, glassy skin that leaves your skin camera-ready even on your tough days. You don’t have to indulge in fancy or luxury skincare products- just focus on simple, basic, and effective routines using basic and natural products.

Holiday skincare routines celebrities swear by

Holiday skincare routines celebrities swear by

The holiday season often brings overlapping work commitments, social events, and personal responsibilities, leaving little time for rest. For many, the combination of long hours, travel, and festive activities can take a toll on the skin, leading to fatigue, puffiness, and dullness.

Experts recommend incorporating targeted skincare treatments, hydration, and proper sleep routines to maintain a refreshed appearance during the busiest time of the year.

Many local celebrities are turning to Belo Medical Group to keep their skin camera-ready amid the season’s demands.

One of Belo’s lounges blends art and soft lighting to create a relaxing setting

Among the most sought-after procedures is NeuroBright Eyes, a 20-minute treatment designed to reduce under-eye puffiness and fatigue. The procedure, part of Belo’s Neurocosmetics line, uses lactobiome to balance the skin, hyaluronic acid for hydration and firming, and tranexamic acid for brightening. The treatment works by modulating the “brain–skin axis,” calming nerve-driven stress that can trigger puffiness, dark circles, or dullness.

Pia Wurtzbach-Jauncey recently sampled NeuroBright Eyes, while actor KD Estrada and actress Alexa Ilacad rely on it to maintain a rested look amid demanding schedules of tapings, concerts, and performances.

Another popular option is the NeuroGlow Facial, which targets uneven texture, congestion, and dullness by regulating overstimulated neuro-receptors. BINI member Aiah, who recently completed 12 Biniverse concert stops across Asia and North America, uses NeuroGlow to keep her skin vibrant.

Content creator CK de Leon reported noticeable improvements in texture and brightness after two sessions. Actress Kaila Estrada and content creator Charlie Flemming also use the treatment to maintain healthy skin despite busy routines.

For facial contouring, Liftera employs thermal diffusion technology to lift, contour, and define facial angles without downtime. The ultrasound-based treatment triggers collagen remodeling at multiple depths, refining the jawline, softening early signs of laxity, and gradually enhancing structure and definition.

Lifestyle and fashion personalities Jaz Reyes, Raymond Gutierrez, Georgina Wilson, and Liz Uy rely on Liftera to maintain sharp, polished features while managing demanding professional and personal schedules.

Belo’s Vertical Axis Lift combines multiple machine-based procedures to enhance lift, contour, and skin suppleness along the natural direction of aging.

Dr. Vicki Belo emphasized that no single machine can achieve all desired results, making combination procedures more effective. Piolo Pascual uses the treatment annually to maintain firm and sculpted angles, while Anne Curtis opts for it to achieve a natural, non-invasive lift.

Dr. Belo noted that 2025 emphasizes combining procedures to deliver optimal results. Non-invasive treatments remain central to Belo’s approach, offering effective outcomes with minimal discomfort or downtime, catering to clients with busy December calendars.

Do Kids Really Need Skincare? Experts Warn Against Trend-Driven Routines

Do Kids Really Need Skincare? Experts Warn Against Trend-Driven Routines

Elsa Angel Rose

While TikTok and Instagram trends popularise child skincare for its aesthetics, the real purpose of skincare is being overshadowed. Kids, teens and pre-teens feel the urge to do a GRWM or DIY makeup as frequently as daily. It makes us wonder, do kids and pre-adolescents really need to get into skincare when their skin is not even fully developed? Even if the child insists on having a 3-step or even a 5-step elaborate skincare routine, should parents cave into this? Anyway, kids are not fully wrong to wish for good skincare. “A basic skincare routine is beneficial for a child’s development, focusing on moisturising, sun protection & cleansing using kid-friendly, fragrance-free products,” said Dr Nathaniel John Pinto, a Paediatrician at Manipal Hospital. This helps in protecting the delicate skin barrier of children, preventing sunburn & dryness.

Stating the obvious, a child’s skin is totally different from a fully developed adult’s skin. Children have still-developing and immature skin, which is structurally thinner than adult skin. Their skin tends to absorb tropical ingredients more readily, which can be both beneficial and harmful. Dr Bindu said, “The outermost barrier (stratum corneum) contains fewer natural lipids, making it more permeable and prone to moisture loss, irritation, and allergen penetration. Sebum production is minimal until puberty, which means children lack the natural protective oils, unlike adults skin, which help defend itself against environmental stressors like pollution, friction, and microbes. As a result, children’s skin absorbs topical ingredients more readily, which is both beneficial and harmful.” Hence, the formulation choice a child uses on himself or herself is particularly important

When one is pervasively unaware of the pros and cons of something, one tends to believe the majority’s perception. Hence, especially for parents in this scenario, it is important to be well educated and mindful. The ubiquitous influencer culture, widespread marketing tactics of brands to target children, and easy availability and access to any sort of skincare products do not help create a positive connotation for child skincare. When adult skincare brands keep their products at a kid’s eye level on a supermarket shelf, when there are no age barriers for the ‘Unboxing videos’ of adult skincare products, naturally, people think how harmful the products meant to be used on adults might be on a child’s skin. This is where knowing the difference between adult and child skincare can go a long way. Because “Basic care, including gentle cleansing, moisturising, and sunscreen, is necessary to support the developing skin barrier and prevent issues like eczema, sun damage, and sensitivity,” quoting Dr Bindu. Always remember that skincare has to be minimal, age appropriate and function-focused. If it is driven by market trends, peer pressure, or aesthetic priorities to ‘look cool’ or similar, then it is not skin care or self-care. Then one is harming oneself in the most ‘uncool’ way possible, and it is the parents’ responsibility to guide children not to do that.

“Parents should keep their child away from any harsh soaps, excessive bathing, and high sun exposure for long-term skin protection; these things will cause the balance of the child’s skin to be disrupted. Parents are encouraged to use children’s broad-spectrum sunscreen, keep the child hydrated, and provide a soft, breathable fabric against their child’s skin to keep it protected,” said Dr Simantini R Sakhardande, a consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist at Manipal Hospital. She further informed, “Having a simple and consistent regimen early on will decrease the chances of developing eczema f lare-ups, rashes, or any other issues and create a foundation for long-term skin health and resilience. Mild, unscented cleansing and moisturising routines that allow for the proper function of the natural barrier of a child’s skin will help to keep their skin moisturised and irritant-free dermatologically.”

So if a basic skincare does no harm, what kind of skincare becomes harmful for them? “Introducing ‘adult-style skincare’ with actives such as acids, retinoids, or brightening agents is unnecessary and potentially harmful, as it can disrupt the skin barrier and trigger long-term sensitivity,” explained Dr Bindu Sthalekar, a celebrity dermatologist and Founder of Skin Smart Solutions. Regular use of such skincare can also cause “The risk of developing skin irritation and dryness, allergic reactions & eczema arising from strong fragrances & preservatives,” said Dr Nathaniel. When asked about whether frequent exposure to various chemicals affects a child’s developing body in any way, he replied, “Some chemicals called endocrine-disrupting chemicals can interfere with the body’s natural hormones & can affect a child’s growth and development, play a role in affecting the child’s reproductive health and future fertility. Additionally, due to a child’s thinner skin barrier, chemicals can be absorbed into the bloodstream more easily, thus increasing the chances of systemic side effects.

7 things Gen Z ditched in their beauty routines that actually make them glow more

7 things Gen Z ditched in their beauty routines that actually make them glow more

There’s something refreshing about watching a younger generation reinvent the rules most of us grew up believing were carved in stone.

I’ve spent years noticing how beauty habits reflect our inner lives, and Gen Z seems to have tapped into an honesty and ease that many of us took decades to discover.

These shifts aren’t just about makeup or skincare. They’re about choosing gentleness, trusting your instincts, and letting your natural self take the lead.

Here are seven things Gen Z has let go of that, surprisingly, make them glow more than ever.

1) Heavy, full-coverage everything

I remember the days when foundation had to be thick enough to cover every pore, every mark, every shadow.

If you could still see your skin underneath, you were told to add more.

Gen Z took that idea and quietly set it aside.

They’re choosing lighter formulas, skin tints, and products that let their freckles, textures, and real skin show through.

It’s a shift from perfection to presence, and it shows.

Skin can breathe, move, and look alive, which creates a glow that makeup alone could never replicate.

When I finally let go of full-coverage make-up, I realized how much energy I’d spent trying to hide.

The less I chased the “flawless face,” the more confident I felt walking out the door with my own skin.

2) Over-washing their skin

For years, I thought that tight, squeaky-clean feeling after cleansing meant my skin was spotless and healthy.

Looking back, it’s clear my poor skin was just stripped and desperate for moisture.

Gen Z figured this out early. Many of them skip the morning wash, use gentler cleansers, or reach for micellar water instead of foaming formulas that disrupt the skin barrier.

The result is softer, calmer, more balanced skin.

And there’s something about this gentle approach that feels symbolic too, like an invitation to check in with what you actually need instead of assuming more is better.

It reminds me of gardening, which is one of my favorite weekend activities. Overwatering a plant doesn’t help it grow.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is step back and let nature do its work.

3) Long, complicated routines

There was a time when I genuinely believed that if my skincare routine wasn’t at least ten steps long, I was doing it wrong.

Serums, mists, acids, essences, oils, eye creams, and boosters all lined my bathroom counter like tiny soldiers.

Gen Z took one look at that level of overwhelm and decided they’d rather not spend their evenings performing a chemistry experiment.

They embrace simple routines that focus on essentials like cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen, with one or two additional steps only if they’re truly helpful.

Their skin benefits from less irritation and fewer conflicting ingredients. Their minds benefit from not having to make thirty tiny decisions before bed.

And honestly, every time I cut unnecessary steps out of my own routine, I feel lighter mentally too.

Simplicity has a way of creating space, and our skin often responds beautifully to that space.

4) Heat styling every day

I used to think of daily heat styling as part of being “put together.”

Straighteners, curlers, and blow dryers were as routine as brushing my teeth, even though my hair always looked a little fried at the ends.

Gen Z has embraced air-drying and letting natural texture shine.

They use heat tools sparingly, and they don’t apologize for hair that looks like actual hair instead of something sculpted into submission.

This change gives their strands a break from constant damage. It also softens the pressure to present a polished version of yourself at all times.

Whenever I step out with my natural waves, I notice I feel more at ease.

Something about letting go of control brings a glow that has nothing to do with shine sprays or serums.

5) Harsh physical exfoliants

If you’ve ever used a grainy scrub that felt like rubbing sand across your face, you probably thought you were doing something good for your skin.

I certainly did. Those scrubs were sold as the secret to smoothness, even though they often caused more irritation than improvement.

Gen Z quickly moved away from those harsh formulas.

Many of them use chemical exfoliants sparingly, and some skip exfoliation altogether when their skin feels even the slightest bit sensitive.

This intuitive approach keeps their skin barrier strong and reduces redness and inflammation.

It shows an awareness of cause and effect that many of us developed only after years of trial and error.

One esthetician once told me that healthy skin responds best to cooperation, not force. That advice applies to so many areas of life, not just beauty routines.

6) Ignoring the gut health connection

For a long time, skincare was treated as something that happened only on the surface.

Food and stress were seen as separate issues that had little to do with your complexion.

Gen Z has bridged that gap beautifully.

They talk openly about probiotics, hydration, whole foods, and the link between digestion and inflammation, and they recognize that glowing skin often starts with internal balance.

As someone who eats a plant-based diet and spends time around farmers’ markets, I’ve seen firsthand how much our skin reflects what’s happening internally.

Even simple changes like drinking more water, eating more fiber, or reducing processed foods can transform the clarity and texture of your skin.

This generation approaches beauty with a whole-body mindset. They see skincare not as an isolated task but as part of their overall wellbeing.

And honestly, it’s paying off.

7) Chasing one specific beauty ideal

Every generation before Gen Z has had a dominant beauty standard that everyone secretly (or not so secretly) tried to match.

The thin brows, the thick brows, the tanned skin, the ultra-matte look, the glossy look, the perfectly sculpted faces. The pressure to fit a specific mold was relentless.

Gen Z is rewriting that narrative. Instead of chasing one aesthetic, they celebrate individuality and experimentation.

Freckles, texture, bare faces, bold makeup, shaved heads, natural curls, and acne-prone skin are all seen as valid expressions of beauty.

This shift is powerful because it removes the pressure to look a certain way.

Confidence grows when you stop fighting yourself, and that confidence creates a glow that no highlighter can imitate.

There’s a quote I love that says authenticity is magnetic.

You can see that magnetism in the way Gen Z walks through the world without needing to shrink or shape themselves to match a trend.

Final thoughts

What strikes me most about these seven changes is the intention behind them. Gen Z isn’t just ditching old habits.

They’re choosing gentleness over harshness and mindfulness over pressure, and they’re tuning into what feels right rather than what they’re told to do.

That shift creates a deeper kind of glow. It comes from trusting your instincts, caring for yourself with respect, and giving your body room to thrive.

Maybe that’s why these habits resonate so much with me.

They’re not really beauty tricks. They’re quiet lessons in listening inward, letting go of unnecessary stress, and embracing the parts of yourself that were always enough.

If you had to choose one of these changes to try, which one feels like it would support your own version of glowing more?

Lymphatic drainage: the gentle beauty trend transforming skincare routines

Lymphatic drainage: the gentle beauty trend transforming skincare routines

Skincare trends come and go, but few have sparked as much buzz as lymphatic drainage. Promising to de-puff, sculpt and detox from head to toe, it’s become the go-to treatment for beauty lovers and wellness enthusiasts. But does it truly live up to the hype, or is it just the latest trend to steal the spotlight?Face Sculptor roller by Skin Gym. Photo: Handout

One of the least understood parts of our physiology, the lymphatic system is actually the body’s ultimate clean-up crew, pushing lymph – a clear, immune-boosting fluid – through a network of vessels and nodes to dispose of waste and toxins. “Our lymphatic system doesn’t move like our circulatory system. It doesn’t have a pump like the heart to cause circulation,” explains Cameran Battley, licensed clinical massage therapist and owner of Honee B. Beauty in the US state of Indiana. “Instead, it moves when we move, breathe, or with external stimulation such as lymphatic massage.”

Lymphatic drainage “works by creating slight pressure gradients that help move interstitial fluid into lymph vessels”, explains Dr Ahmad Chaudhry, certified dermatologist at Copenhagen-based Scandinavian Biolabs. Specific light touch encourages fluid movement, reduces swelling and gives the body’s detoxification system a modest boost. When functioning well, the lymphatic system helps maintain fluid balance, remove waste and support immune health.

So what about lymphatic drainage massage? It’s all about gently guiding lymph fluid along using delicate, rhythmic pressure to move it towards the lymph nodes where it can be filtered. Unlike typical massages that work deep into muscles, lymphatic drainage is a surface-level technique. “Pressure is usually about a one or two on a 10-point scale,” explains Chaudhry, emphasising that lymphatic drainage is more of a gentle nudge than a deep-tissue treatment.

Indeed, deeper pressure can temporarily collapse the lymphatic vessels. “[Lymphatic drainage] is very rhythmic and methodical. The therapist will use a sequence of strokes on an area multiple times to achieve the desired effect,” Battley explains.

As you might expect, myths around lymphatic drainage abound. While it can help reduce fluid retention, making you feel temporarily lighter after a session, it does not magically dissolve fat. “Lymph is different from fat or cellulite, which shapes the appearance of skin,” clarifies Stacey Tapping, founder and CEO of Beauty Sculpting Room in the English county of Dorset. “Lymph carries fat, among other substances processed in the body,” she explains.

Lyma Laser. Photo: HandoutAccording to another myth, lymphatic drainage is the holy grail of facial sculpting, producing noticeably chiselled cheekbones and a dramatically lifted face. While the post-massage glow and reduction in puffiness are real and can last several days, these effects are temporary. Dr Hannah Kopelman, a dermatologist at

New York-based Kopelman Aesthetic Surgery, explains that while “this technique can help reduce swelling and temporarily enhance the skin’s glow, it won’t transform skin firmness or significantly address deep-seated conditions like acne”. So while regular sessions can keep things looking fresh, lymphatic drainage is more gentle facelift than fairy godmother.

Will Skincare Routines In 2026 Belong To The 'Less but Smarter' Movement? | Beauty News

Will Skincare Routines In 2026 Belong To The ‘Less but Smarter’ Movement? | Beauty News

Last Updated:November 29, 2025, 15:56 IST

The rise of minimalism in skincare is about finding a few good, clean products that can give you results without having a shelf full of half-used bottles.

Everyone is searching for that one product to do it all

Who remembers the time when women were fed the narrative that to achieve glowing skin that looked like glass or a doll, whichever you preferred, meant having a multi-step routine that had you spending over half an hour in the bathroom? Well, the era of those 10-, 12- or 15-step routines is giving way to a new kind of luxury: selective, intelligent and quietly effective.

Rachna Bahadur, founder of Flout, says, “If you pay attention to how people talk about skincare now – the sighs, confessions about abandoned routines, bewilderment of mature beginners who know they should start but cannot see through the clutter – you can feel a shift. The era of proudly layering products has lost its charm. What people want today is not more steps but skincare that feels intuitive and actually delivers on its promise.” This shift is less about trends and more about how modern consumers live and their idea of luxury that’s evolved.

Luxury Has Quietly Redefined Itself

For a long time, the belief in India and the world was that more steps in your skincare routine equal more care. But like every idea of luxury, this too has evolved. It mirrors shifts across culture: quiet luxury in fashion, intentional wellness, edited wardrobes, and simplified home aesthetics.

In skincare, that translates into a desire for products that do not demand attention but reward them. People no longer want 45-minute routines. They want the assurance that their two or three thoughtfully chosen steps are doing the work of ten.

The rise of single-ingredient skincare was important, Rachna shares, “It taught consumers the language of actives, created a new standard for transparency and forced brands to step out from behind vague claims. It empowered people to understand what they were applying to their skin.”

But what began as clarity soon turned into clutter. Too many actives, too many percentages, too many rules about what could or could not be layered. What excited enthusiasts often left beginners intimidated, and even confident users found themselves managing routines that resembled chemistry sets.

Sustainability begins with reduced consumption

Now, what people want is to skip the five clean serums and find one exceptional product that gives results and is something you can use every time. From a shelf of half-used bottles, a select few that earn loyalty. This is modern practicality that includes a routine with fewer, higher-performing steps and creates less waste, lowers environmental burden and reflects a more evolved way of engaging with beauty.

The last decade of skincare was defined by ‘more’: more actives, more steps, more promises. The next decade will belong to ideas that honour clarity over clutter, efficacy over excess and intention over impulse.

‘Less but smarter’ is not about shrinking routines for the aesthetic of minimalism. It is about elevating them with science, sensoriality and purpose. The future of skincare is not what fills your shelf, but what earns its place on it.

8 wellness routines women over 50 commit to that don’t cost a fortune

8 wellness routines women over 50 commit to that don’t cost a fortune

When I left my corporate job in finance a few years back, I thought wellness meant expensive gym memberships and fancy supplements. Turns out, I was completely wrong.

The most transformative routines I’ve adopted since turning forty don’t require a trust fund or a personal trainer. They’re simple, sustainable practices that have genuinely improved my quality of life without draining my bank account.

If you’re over 50 and looking to feel more energized, grounded, and healthy, these eight routines are worth your attention. I’ve tried them all, and they work.

1) Morning movement before the world wakes up

There’s something almost magical about moving your body in the early morning hours. I started trail running at 5:30 AM not because I’m naturally a morning person, but because it was the only time I could consistently carve out for myself.

Here’s what surprised me: the time of day actually matters.

Scientists found that thirty minutes of moderate morning exercise—and short walking breaks every half hour—improved executive function and working memory throughout the day in adults aged 55–80.

You don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment. A brisk walk around your neighborhood, gentle yoga in your living room, or dancing to your favorite songs all count. The key is consistency and timing.

I’ve found that morning movement sets the tone for my entire day. My thinking is clearer, my mood is more stable, and I handle stress better. Plus, getting it done early means no excuses later when life inevitably gets in the way.

2) Cultivating real connections, not just acquaintances

After spending nearly two decades in finance, I had hundreds of professional contacts but very few genuine friendships. It took leaving that world to realize how lonely I’d actually been.

The research backs up what I learned the hard way. “Good relationships don’t just protect our bodies; they protect our brains.”

Quality beats quantity every single time. I now prioritize deep conversations with a small circle of friends over maintaining a large network of surface-level relationships. Every Saturday at the farmers’ market where I volunteer, I connect with people in meaningful ways that don’t cost anything but attention.

Want to strengthen your relationships without spending money? Put your phone away during conversations. Ask questions and actually listen to the answers. Show up when people need you. Send a thoughtful text checking in on someone you haven’t heard from in a while.

These simple acts build the kind of connections that genuinely support your wellbeing as you age.

3) Daily meditation practice

I used to think meditation was too “woo-woo” for someone with my analytical background. My racing mind seemed fundamentally incompatible with sitting still.

Then burnout forced me to try it anyway.

Now I practice for twenty minutes every morning after my run, and it’s completely changed how I navigate daily challenges. My anxiety levels have dropped significantly, and I respond to stressors more thoughtfully instead of reactively.

The best part? Meditation costs absolutely nothing. You don’t need apps, classes, or special cushions. Just a quiet spot and a willingness to sit with your thoughts.

Start with five minutes. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. When your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring your attention back. That’s it. That’s the whole practice.

Recently, I read Rudá Iandê’s book “Laughing in the Face of Chaos,” and his insights about our emotions being messengers rather than enemies really resonated with my meditation experience. He writes that “until our intellect stops fighting our emotions, there can be no true integration between these two essential aspects of our being.” Meditation has taught me exactly this kind of integration.

4) Growing something edible

My backyard garden started as a small experiment with tomatoes and herbs. Now it’s become one of my most grounding practices.

There’s something deeply satisfying about eating food you’ve grown yourself. You don’t need acres of land or expensive equipment. A few pots on a balcony, a small raised bed, or even herbs on a sunny windowsill work perfectly.

Gardening gets you outside, gives you gentle physical activity, and connects you to natural cycles in ways that feel increasingly rare in modern life. Plus, you’ll save money on produce while eating fresher, more nutritious food.

I’ve found that tending plants teaches patience and acceptance. Some things thrive, others don’t, and that’s okay. It’s a metaphor for life that I return to again and again.

5) Maintaining a sense of purpose

One of the most important lessons I learned from my career transition was that purpose doesn’t have to be grand or world-changing. It just has to be meaningful to you.

The research is clear on this. “Having a sense of purpose in retirement…is linked to better health and longevity.”

For me, purpose comes through writing articles that might help someone feel less alone, volunteering at the farmers’ market, and mentoring women considering career changes. None of these cost money, but all of them give my days meaning.

What lights you up? What problems do you want to help solve? What legacy do you want to leave in your community?

Purpose can be found in volunteering, creating art, supporting causes you believe in, or simply being a consistent, caring presence in someone’s life. The key is finding something that feels authentic to you, not what you think you should care about.

6) Adopting an optimistic mindset

I’ll be honest: optimism doesn’t come naturally to me. Years of analyzing financial risks trained me to see potential problems everywhere.

But here’s something that changed my perspective. “Those with a more positive outlook went on to live, on average, 7.5 years longer.”

Seven and a half years. That’s significant.

Cultivating optimism doesn’t mean ignoring reality or forcing toxic positivity. It means consciously choosing to notice what’s working alongside what isn’t. It means believing you can handle challenges instead of assuming you’ll be overwhelmed by them.

I started a gratitude journal every evening, writing down three things that went well during the day. It felt silly at first, but over time, it genuinely shifted how I see my life. I notice beauty and kindness more readily now.

This practice costs the price of a notebook and five minutes of your time. The return on that investment has been remarkable.

7) Cooking real food at home

When I transitioned to veganism at 35, I had to learn how to actually cook instead of relying on takeout and convenience foods. It completely transformed my relationship with both food and my own wellbeing.

Cooking at home is one of the most cost-effective wellness practices available. You control the ingredients, the portions, and the quality. You save significant money compared to eating out or buying prepared foods.

But it’s more than just nutrition and budget. Cooking has become a meditation practice for me. The repetitive motions of chopping vegetables, the satisfaction of transforming raw ingredients into something delicious, the care involved in nourishing myself and others—it all feels grounding and creative.

You don’t need to be a chef or spend hours in the kitchen. Simple meals made from whole ingredients work beautifully. Batch cooking on weekends can set you up for easy weeknight dinners.

The act of feeding yourself well is an act of self-respect that ripples out into every other area of your life.

8) Regular digital detox time

This might be the hardest routine on the list, but it’s also one of the most impactful.

I take regular digital detox weekends to reset my relationship with technology. No social media, minimal email checking, just direct engagement with real life happening around me.

The constant stimulation of our devices fragments our attention and disrupts our nervous systems in ways we don’t fully appreciate until we step away. After a weekend without screens, I always feel more present, creative, and connected to myself.

You don’t have to start with a full weekend. Try one screen-free evening per week. Leave your phone in another room during meals. Take walks without headphones or podcasts, just experiencing the world around you.

This practice costs nothing but the willingness to tolerate brief discomfort. The mental clarity and peace you gain in return are priceless.

Final thoughts

Wellness doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, the routines that have genuinely transformed my life over 50 are remarkably simple and accessible.

What they do require is consistency and intention. These aren’t quick fixes or trendy hacks. They’re sustainable practices that gradually shift how you feel in your body and move through the world.

Start with one or two that resonate most with you. Build them into your daily routine until they become automatic. Then add another if you feel called to.

Your future self will thank you for the investment of time and attention. Because ultimately, that’s all these routines really cost: your commitment to treating yourself with the care and respect you deserve.
