Centella Asiatica

Top 6 Korean Skincare Beauty Essentials For Spring Season With Natural Ingredients

Korean Skincare Beauty Essentials For Spring Season: As spring arrives in India, our skin asks for a lighter, gentler routine that keeps it calm, hydrated and glowing. Korean skincare, or K‑Beauty, is loved worldwide because it focuses on natural, soothing ingredients that work without harsh chemicals. Instead of heavy creams, spring calls for ingredients that balance oil, boost hydration, and strengthen the skin’s barrier, according to various skincare experts. Below, in this article, we will tell you about the key natural ingredients you’ll want to look for this season, and why they’re perfect for Indian skin types in Spring season:

6 Best Korean Skincare Beauty Essentials For Spring Season You Must Try

1. Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Centella, often called Cica, is one of the most celebrated Korean skincare ingredients because of its calming and healing properties. It’s great if your skin gets irritated or red due to pollution or warmth in spring. According to a June 2025 research, “Centella asiatica (CICA)-derived exosomes have emerged as bioactive agents for skin rejuvenation due to their regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties.” Cica helps soothe inflammation, supports skin repair and strengthens the moisture barrier, making it ideal for sensitive or reactive skin.

2. Rice Water

Rice water has long been a staple in Asian beauty traditions and is now widely used in Korean products. It’s rich in vitamins and antioxidants that help brighten dullness and smooth skin texture. An April 2018 research highlights, “Rice, a rich source of amino acids, peptides, organic acids, polyphenols, vitamins, and polysaccharides, has garnered growing attention owing to its diverse skincare benefits. Research has demonstrated its potential to enhance skin hydration, improve skin barrier function, mitigate oxidative stress, promote skin whitening, and address signs of aging.” For Indian climates during Spring, which can be humid and sun‑exposed, rice water also helps balance oil and improve overall radiance.

3. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a versatile, water-soluble nutrient crucial for cellular energy, skin health, and barrier function. It regulates excess oil, shrinks the look of pores, and evens out skin tone. It also supports the skin’s barrier and helps reduce redness or pigmentation that can show up with changing seasons. It’s suitable for almost every skin type, from oily to combination skin in spring.

4. Green Tea Extract

Green tea is packed with antioxidants that protect skin from environmental stressors like pollution. It also soothes redness and balances oil production, which is perfect for spring when skin might feel uneven or more reactive.

5. Hyaluronic Acid

One of the best humectants in skincare, hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This makes it ideal for keeping skin deeply hydrated without heaviness. In spring, when humidity rises but skin still needs moisture, hyaluronic acid keeps skin plump and comfortable.

6. Ginseng

A traditional herbal ingredient, ginseng boosts circulation, supports collagen production and improves skin vitality.  National Institutes of Health (.gov) highlights, “Ginseng is widely used in cosmetics and skin care. The main active ingredient in ginseng is ginsenoside, and its effects on the skin are mostly anti-aging and whitening.” This helps skin stay firm and radiant, especially if it has looked dull after winter. Its antioxidant power also protects against environmental stress.

Choosing products with these natural Korean skincare ingredients means your skin gets gentle and effective care that matches the changing season.

Skincare: Are we 'masking' the real issue behind skincare for kids?

Skincare: Are we ‘masking’ the real issue behind skincare for kids?

Hollywood star Shay Mitchell’s toddler skincare line sparked backlash, igniting a debate on whether young children need beauty products. Dermatologists and mothers are divided, with many experts emphasising that toddlers’ naturally soft skin requires minimal intervention, prioritising hygiene and natural remedies over cosmetic routines. In hopes of including toddlers and fuelling their curiosity, Hollywood star Shay Mitchell launched her skincare brand targeted to kids, nay toddlers. It drew instant backlash for being tone deaf and sparked a debate. Launching panda-face sheet masks, she wrote on Instagram, “Kids are naturally curious and instead of ignoring that, we can embrace it. With safe, gentle products parents can trust, and sweet moments that bring us closer.” She responded to the backlash saying that it isn’t about beauty at all. “I think this is coming down to it not being a beauty thing,” she said. “Kids don’t look at masks and think about fixing, they think about it being a cooling sensation and a shared moment.”The intention is to educate kids about self-care while the underlying issue gets “masked” (pun intended). In our latest #TalkingPoint, we ask mothers and dermatologists, do toddlers even need skincare? Is this peer pressure? Are we forgetting the sensitive skin of toddlers? Is skincare for toddlers the next big thing in beauty? Mothers are divided – a healthy habit or forced beauty standards.

Social media is filled with children and teenagers using active ingredient skincare and makeup

Child’s skin is naturally soft: dermatsDr. Navjot Arora, dermatologist says, “Toddlers do not need skincare in the cosmetic or beauty sense. At this age, a child’s skin is naturally soft and well-hydrated. Their skin is also far more sensitive and permeable than an adult’s, which means unnecessary products can actually cause irritation, allergies, rashes, or long-term sensitivity. Introducing beauty-oriented products such as face masks, scrubs, or sheet masks is neither medically needed nor developmentally appropriate.”“Toddlers have naturally soft, healthy skin. Their skin barrier is new, strong, and doesn’t need extra products like facemasks, serums, toners, or treatments. Healthy food, sleep, and play are the best “skincare” at this age. Toddlers don’t need skincare routines. Their skin is already perfect,” Dr. Geeta Grewal, cosmetologist, adds. ‘Early exposure to beauty standards creates pressure’“These products may unintentionally send a message that appearance needs “enhancement,” even before a child understands what beauty standards are. Early exposure to such practices can create pressure, fuel comparisons, and shift a child’s focus toward looks instead of play, creativity, or learning. When beauty becomes a performance for social media or branding, kids are pulled into a culture they are too young to navigate,” Dr. Arora adds.

Gen Alpha follows trends instead of trusty skincare, and grabs viral products

‘Dadi maa ke gharelu nuskhe are best for small kids’Social media influence is the prime suspect for skincare for toddlers becoming a point of debate. Zaib Khurram Habib, a mother of three, shares, “There is a lot of peer pressure among kids about looks and it is largely due to social media where physical appearance is considered to be of primary importance. The manufacturers are riding on this craze and targeting kids through advertisements on the platforms kids are exposed to.” She adds that the OG ‘dadi maa ke gharelu nuskhe’ are the best for small children and toddlers. Gen Alpha follows trends instead of trusty skincare, and grabs viral products. Social media influencers’ increasing purchasing power makes them more independent than ever. According to Mintel, it is projected to reach an astounding $5.5 trillion by 2029—and that’s hard to ignore. ‘Kids are now vanity-conscious and possessive about their products’Millennial mothers note a stark generation gap with their Gen Alpha kids. Hamna Kamal, a teacher and mother of two, shares, “There is definitely a shift in the obsession rate of children about their skin. I see the way my 11-year-old daughter interacts with her friends, these kids are very self-conscious. Am I looking good? Is my skin looking dry? Is my scalp dry? When I was at this age, I did not have an idea of dry scalp or skin! But my daughter is very particular, the cream that she uses should not be used by anybody else. But she is so possessive about it that no one else should use it.”‘I don’t let people touch my toddler, skincare toh door ki baat hai’Mothers caution their toddlers not just from strangers, but strange hands too. Immunity and germ concerns have been heightened post-pandemic. Mohaddesa Zaidi, mother of a toddler, says, “I wouldn’t even want people touching my child’s face without washing their hands, skincare toh door ki baat hai. Their skin is delicate, and hygiene matters way more than any so-called “routine.” Kids need care, not beauty pressure. They should be learning confidence and comfort in their own skin, not thinking something needs to be “fixed.” I don’t think any child needs them.” She believes toddlers should be playing, exploring, and enjoying childhood, not following beauty routines.

On the flip side are mothers who believe skincare routines can teach kids about discipline and self-care early on (Pic: iStock)

‘It’s about healthy habits from the start’On the flip side are mothers who believe skincare routines can teach kids about discipline and self-care early on. “For me, skincare for kids (and for adults) should be less about ‘beauty’ and more about self-care. I have a 4-month old, but as he grows, that’s how I would like him to think about skincare as well – building healthy habits around it and making it more about care than appearance,” shares Soumya Luthra, a stay-at-home mom. ‘Products are fine, but shouldn’t follow trends blindly’Echoing the sentiment, Isha Jaiswal, an accountant and content creator says, “If a gentle product helps with dryness or sensitivity, it’s fine. But people shouldn’t follow trends blindly. As a new mother, I feel toddler skincare should always focus on health and safety, not beauty or perfection.”For Vandana Paswan, it may not be that bad. “Skincare, if presented to children as self care with its benefits, will carry the necessary message and not be deemed as an obsession. A skin care routine does give a sense of responsibility to the kids. It also gives them a sense of control which they love. As they grow they also become more independent in the long-run.”Big expectations for little mindsA teenager’s mom and psychologist Jyoti Sharma thinks it’s all too much too soon. “I don’t think even teenagers need skincare products beyond a face wash and mild moisturiser. Toddlers using skincare is a big no for me. Chote bachhon ki skin already bohot achi hoti hai. 11 saal tak they have baby skin. They need minimum products and it’s ideal if they’re household products like coconut oil and olive oil.”“Parents and caregivers should prioritize skin health over beauty trends. Stick to dermatologist-approved basics—gentle cleansers, adequate hydration, sun protection for outdoor exposure, and avoiding any unnecessary cosmetic products. Preserve the innocence of childhood by keeping beauty pressures at bay,” Dr. Arora says.Inputs by Riya Sharma

LONDON, March 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Amazon’s Spring Deal Days 2026 (March 10-16) arrives as one of the first major beauty shopping events of the year. This season, dermatologist-loved skincare brand COSRX joins the event with a curated lineup built around some of the most searched skincare ingredients today – Peptides, Snail mucin, and PDRN technology.

The routine begins with The 6 Peptide Skin Booster Serum, a first-step peptide booster designed to enhance the absorption and performance of the skincare that follows. It is paired with The Peptide Collagen Hydrogel Eye Patch, infused with caffeine and collagen to help reduce the appearance of puffiness, wrinkles, and fine lines, and completed with The Peptide Collagen Lifting Glow Hydrogel Mask, delivering intensive care to leave skin looking smoother and more luminous.

It is followed by the Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream, a lightweight moisturizer designed to lock in hydration and support the skin barrier.
Together, the duo forms a simple routine focused on soothing care and lasting hydration.

Extra Steps to Elevate Your Routine
For those looking to complement their core skincare routine with targeted treatments, COSRX introduces additional steps designed to enhance overall skin performance. Among them is PDRN, a trending ingredient that has recently gained global attention for its role in supporting skin regeneration and vitality. Struggling With Dark Spots? Skincare Experts Say Prevention Is The Real Game-Changer | Beauty News

Last Updated:March 09, 2026, 10:09 IST

Dermatologists share expert tips to prevent pigmentation and dark spots, from sunscreen and antioxidants to skincare habits that protect your skin barrier.

Sun protection remains the single most important step in preventing pigmentation.

Clear, even-toned skin rarely comes from complicated skincare routines alone. More often, it is the result of small, consistent habits that protect the skin from everyday triggers like sun exposure, pollution, stress and inflammation. Pigmentation and dark spots remain among the most common skincare concerns for women, particularly in urban environments where lifestyle and environmental factors constantly challenge the skin barrier.

From hormonal changes to UV exposure and post-acne marks, several factors can lead to uneven skin tone. Dermatologists say the key to managing pigmentation is not only treating it after it appears, but also preventing it through thoughtful skincare, sun protection and healthy lifestyle choices.

Why Pigmentation Happens

According to Dr. Tanushree Biswas, dermatologist at Kaya, pigmentation often develops due to a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors.

“Healthy, glowing skin blooms from consistent, mindful habits rather than elaborate routines that fizzle out. Pigmentation and dark spots top the list of concerns for so many women today, sparked by relentless sun exposure, hormonal shifts like those during pregnancy or PCOD, gritty urban pollution, everyday stress, and even well-meaning but misguided skincare tweaks that ramp up melanin production,” she explains.

Similarly, Dr. Priyanka Keshav, dermatologist at VLCC Group, notes that pigmentation often develops gradually and can be influenced by multiple factors. “Pigmentation and dark spots are common concerns that many women experience at different stages of life. These marks often develop gradually due to factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, and environmental stressors,” she says.

Sunscreen: The Most Powerful Prevention Tool

Dermatologists agree that sun protection remains the single most important step in preventing pigmentation. “Start with sunscreen, your non-negotiable shield. UV rays, even sneaking through clouds or windows, ignite 80 per cent of pigmentation issues by overstimulating melanocytes,” says Dr Biswas.

She recommends using a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen with PA++++ protection, ideally one that contains zinc for better compatibility with Indian skin tones. Reapplication every three to four hours when outdoors is equally important.

Dr Keshav adds that protective measures beyond sunscreen can also make a difference. Wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, or using umbrellas during peak sunlight hours can help limit UV exposure and reduce melanin stimulation.

Strengthening The Skin Barrier

Overdoing skincare can sometimes worsen pigmentation instead of preventing it. Dr Keshav explains that excessive exfoliation or harsh products can weaken the skin barrier and trigger irritation, which may later lead to dark spots. Instead, she recommends focusing on barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid and calming botanical extracts.

Dr Biswas also suggests gentle cleansing and mindful exfoliation. “Cleanse gently twice daily with a pH-balanced, ceramide-rich formula to whisk away pollutants without stripping natural oils.” She advises exfoliating only twice a week using mild acids like mandelic or lactic acid rather than abrasive scrubs that can inflame the skin.

The Role Of Antioxidants And Hydration

A well-balanced skincare routine also benefits from antioxidant ingredients that help defend the skin against environmental damage. Dr Biswas recommends incorporating vitamin C and niacinamide into nighttime routines. Vitamin C helps brighten the complexion while blocking tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production, while niacinamide can help reduce existing dark spots and calm pollution-induced irritation.

Hydration, both internal and external, also plays a key role. Drinking adequate water and using moisturisers containing hyaluronic acid can strengthen the skin barrier and improve resilience against environmental stressors.

Lifestyle Choices Matter Too

Dr Keshav explains that sleep, nutrition and stress management all influence hormonal balance and skin repair. Diets rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can support the skin’s natural healing process and help minimise post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Avoiding habits such as picking pimples is equally important, as it can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that takes longer to fade.

Preventing pigmentation is rarely about a single miracle product. Instead, it comes down to a balanced approach that combines sun protection, gentle skincare, antioxidant support and healthy lifestyle habits. By protecting the skin barrier and minimising triggers, it becomes far easier to maintain an even, radiant complexion over time.

Best pre-Eid skincare routine 2026 | how to get glowing skin for Eid | Ramadan skincare tips for dehydrated skin | natural home remedies for Eid glow | when to get a facial before Eid | Pre-Eid skincare habits that actually work during Ramadan fasting

Best pre-Eid skincare routine 2026 | how to get glowing skin for Eid | Ramadan skincare tips for dehydrated skin | natural home remedies for Eid glow | when to get a facial before Eid | Pre-Eid skincare habits that actually work during Ramadan fasting

Eid preparations usually start with outfits and accessories but somewhere along the way, skincare joins the list too. Between long fasting hours, changing weather, and late-night gatherings, the skin can feel a little tired — making a simple pre-Eid reset all the more welcome.

Hydration is key

One of the biggest challenges during Ramadan is maintaining hydration. Yes yes, it’s the age-old advice of drinking your weight, but honestly there is no better or sustainable option out there!

Long hours without water leaves your skin looking tired, which is why replenishing fluids from iftar till sehri becomes very important.

Alongside plain water, many people are now turning to chia seed water for hydration boost. Electrolyte drinks are also becoming popular, particularly for those who spend long days outside or remain active during Ramadan.

Cleansing and Gentle Exfoliation

A good cleansing routine remains the foundation of healthy skin. And no, you need not have five steps for cleaning your face. However, with warmer weather and daily exposure to dust, sweat, and pollution, cleansing twice a day with a mild face wash is a must.

Also, cleansing alone is not always enough. Gentle exfoliation two to three times a week can help the skin appear brighter and smoother. This step allows moisturisers and serums to absorb more effectively.

That said, moderation is key. Do not over-exfoliate! Especially if you don’t want an irritated skin and with micro tears.

The Truth About Glow

If miracle under-eye creams actually worked overnight, dark circles would have gone extinct by now!

Yet as Eid approaches, ads promising instant fixes seem to pop up everywhere.  Rollers, creams and serums all claiming to erase tired eyes in record time.

The truth, however, is far less dramatic.

Dark circles are often linked to genetics, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and dry skin. What does help here is a good moisturiser paired with a hydrating serum. Pair it up with a good sunscreen and you have the golden combination. One that can improve the under-eye area, as well as pigmentation around the mouth and chin.

Nourish From Within

Great skincare begins at the iftar table. While our iftar spread often features fried snacks, balancing them with lighter options can make a visible difference to both energy levels and skin health.

Dishes such as chickpea salad, pasta salad or yoghurt-based drinks with limited sugar are refreshing alternatives that nourish the body without overwhelming it.

Word of advice? Cut down the oil now if you don’t want to welcome a breakout right before Eid.

Time Your Facials

Thinking of getting a facial before Eid? Timing matters.

Most skincare experts recommend booking treatments 10 to 12 days before the celebration. This gives the skin enough time to settle in case of temporary redness or irritation. Trying a brand-new facial too close to Eid can be a very risky business; hardly ideal when festivities are just around the corner.

Keep It Simple

When Eid is approaching, simplicity tends to work best.

A routine built around hydration, gentle cleansing, light exfoliation and moisturising is more than enough to keep skin looking fresh and balanced. Be consistent and the glow will follow.

The mother behind clean skincare and natural pain relief

The mother behind clean skincare and natural pain relief

FormulaK8 was born during one of life’s most defining seasons, motherhood.

Founder Katie Powell didn’t set out to build a skincare and wellness brand. She was simply trying to protect her growing family. While pregnant with her son, Braxton, Katie began questioning the products she used every day, assuming that well-known brands would naturally be safe.

“I started really reading ingredient labels for the first time,” Katie shares. “And I was honestly shocked by how many chemicals were hiding in products I had trusted for years.”

Natural, cleaner alternatives did exist, but at price points that felt out of reach for many families. “So I thought, if I can’t afford these options, how many other people are in the same position?” she says. “That didn’t sit right with me.”

So Katie did what many mothers do when solutions fall short: She created her own.

She began formulating products using plant-based, natural ingredients that were safe, effective, and thoughtfully made. What started at her kitchen counter soon evolved into something much larger, a growing realization that wellness shouldn’t feel exclusive or out of reach.

“Our mission has always been simple,” Katie explains.

“We’re here to help. Everyone deserves safe, effective products without harmful chemicals.”

That belief became the foundation of FormulaK8, a Canadian-made, Okanagan-born brand built on kindness, transparency, and the desire to help.

At its core, FormulaK8 focuses on creating clean, toxin-free wellness products designed to enhance vitality, soothe pain, and support skin health, without compromise. Each formula eliminates harsh ingredients while maintaining results that people can genuinely feel.

But FormulaK8’s story doesn’t stop at skincare.

Katie’s mission deepened during her mother’s battle with chronic pain. Following spinal surgery, her mother was prescribed heavy opioids that dulled not only the pain, but her presence.

Watching someone she loved struggle with side effects and dependency, Katie once again turned to natural solutions, this time creating pain-relief salves infused with healing, plant-based ingredients.

“It was hard to watch,” Katie recalls. “She wasn’t herself. The medication helped the pain, but it took so much from her at the same time.”

Over time, those remedies helped reduce her mother’s reliance on medication and restore a sense of vitality that had been missing. That experience solidified FormulaK8’s purpose: to offer holistic, effective alternatives that support both physical and emotional well- being.

Sustainability is woven into every part of the brand. FormulaK8 uses ethically sourced, plant-based ingredients and recyclable packaging, intentionally avoiding wastefulness, greenwashing, or surface-level sustainability claims. Each decision is made with long-term impact in mind, caring for both people and the planet.

The brand’s commitment to wellness extends beyond its products. FormulaK8 proudly donates 5% of all sales to the Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna, reinforcing the belief that true wellness includes mental health, community care, and compassion.

Whether it’s skincare that revitalizes or natural remedies that ease discomfort, everything FormulaK8 creates is rooted in the same guiding principle: help should be honest, inclusive, and grounded in care.

Today, FormulaK8 stands as more than a business. It’s a reflection of Katie’s journey as a mother, a daughter, and a woman who chose to question the status quo and build something better.

Because at FormulaK8, wellness isn’t about perfection. It’s about care. And everyone deserves access to it.

Tome will consist of a line of skincare products made with Spongilla lacustris, a freshwater sponge that has evolved over millions of years, for consumers that are compelled by science and story to find the most potent products for their skincare routine. Dermata believes its Tome skincare line will amplify existing skincare routines with essential ingredients that deliver exponential results, without harmful extremes. Dermata’s first planned product to launch under the Tome brand name is a once weekly treatment, targeting acne, that is an easy addition to any skincare routine. Dermata expects to launch this product in the middle of 2026 with additional product launches planned to follow. Start your skincare story at www.tomeskincare.com.

Why skincare stops working as you age – and how to fix your routine

Why skincare stops working as you age – and how to fix your routine

As we age, our skin’s needs change. So our skincare should, too. If you find yourself side-eyeing your usual skincare products because they don’t seem to be working anymore, here’s why it’s happening. Also find out how to adjust your routine to suit your skin’s changing needs.

ALSO SEE: Barrier-repair skincare ingredients every woman should know

You may have noticed that your favourite skincare products don’t work quite the way they used to. This isn’t because the product has suddenly become ineffective but because the skin’s needs have changed.

Skin often begins to behave differently in the mid-30s and again when a woman enters perimenopause. At this stage, hormonal and structural changes affect how the skin responds to ingredients. But the good news is that a few tweaks to your routines can make a huge difference.

Biological and structural ageing

As we age, the skin’s natural cell turnover slows. Dead skin cells build up more easily, leaving skin looking dull and less responsive to active ingredients.

At the same time, collagen and elastin production declines. This leads to reduced firmness and elasticity, which topical creams can’t really fix. The skin also produces less oil, making it drier and weakening the skin barrier. For many women, this barrier starts to decline in the mid-30s.

Perimenopause/menopause

Hormonal changes during perimenopause accelerate these shifts. A drop in oestrogen contribute to a rapid decline in collagen production, while fluctuating androgen levels can lead to adult acne, dryness or sensitivity. As a result, products that once worked well – even a favourite moisturiser – may suddenly seem less effective.

External factors

Lifestyle plays a role. High sugar intake, poor sleep and lack of sunscreen can impact how skincare performs. Using formulas that no longer suit your skin type and age also cause irritation and reduce results.

How to adjust your routine

1. Prioritise barrier support:

Your skin barrier protects against pollutants and locks in moisture. Support it with a gentle cleanser and a barrier-support ingredients like ceramides. Avoid exfoliants and retinoids until irritation settles.

2. Switch to richer formulations:

Hydrating creams and serums can replenish the lipids your skin loses with age.

3. Introduce stronger actives carefully:

If your routine has hit a plateau, ingredients such as antioxidants or retinoids can help – but only once the skin barrier is healthy.

4. In-clinic treatments:

For deeper structural concerns, treatments such as microneedling and other non-invasive procedures may offer results topical products cannot.

The bottom line

Skincare needs evolve with age. By understanding them and adapting your routine, you can continue to support and enjoy healthy, glowing skin.

Dermatologists warn teens and parents about social media skincare risks

Dermatologists warn teens and parents about social media skincare risks

Specialist dermatologists Dr Lauren Knight and Dr Tarryn Jacobs say hormonal changes during puberty often trigger oily skin and acne, but poor skincare advice online is increasingly making the problem worse.

They say teenagers, and their parents, should focus on simple routines rather than copying influencer-led skincare trends.

Why teenage skin changes during puberty

According to Knight, hormonal shifts during puberty are the main driver of teenage skin problems.

She explained that rising androgen levels increase oil production in both boys and girls, which can lead to acne.

“The skin becomes a bit oilier… and then it can progress to acne, whether mild early acne or more severe nodular cystic acne,” she said.

While acne is a normal part of adolescence, Knight warned that it should still be treated properly to avoid long-term consequences.

Untreated acne can lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation, which can affect teenagers well into adulthood.

The psychological impact can also be significant.

Social media skincare trends raising concern

Dermatologists say a growing concern is the influence of skincare content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Jacobs said many teenagers, some as young as nine or 10, are copying complex skincare routines promoted by influencers.

“We are seeing young girls… using products that are inappropriate or using these multi-step routines,” she said.

In clinics, this often leads to irritated skin and allergic reactions.

Doctors are increasingly treating teenagers for problems such as contact dermatitis and perioral dermatitis, a rash that appears around the mouth and sometimes spreads toward the eyes.

The simple skincare routine teens should follow

Dermatologists recommend a basic skincare routine for teenagers, especially those without serious skin problems.

The key steps are simple:

– Cleanse

– Moisturise

– Use sunscreen

Jacobs said building healthy skincare habits early is important, but it should focus on skin health rather than appearance.

“It should be framed in a way that is health-focused… much like brushing your teeth or eating a healthy diet.”

Additional steps, such as exfoliating or using toners, are usually unnecessary unless there is a specific skin concern.

Why ‘natural’ skincare is not always safer

Parents often look for natural products for their children’s skin, but dermatologists warn that natural ingredients are not always safer.

Knight said many people wrongly assume natural products cause fewer reactions.

“Natural ingredients aren’t often as stringently tested as our chemical options,” she said.

“They are often common allergens or irritants.”

Instead, dermatologists recommend choosing gentle products and avoiding unnecessary ingredients.

When teenagers should see a dermatologist

Parents should consider professional help if acne becomes severe, painful or begins to scar.

Early treatment can reduce long-term damage.

Doctors say acne scarring is one of the most difficult aspects of treatment later in life.

“Scar management is probably the hardest aspect of acne management,” Knight said.

She added that sun protection and targeted treatments can help improve scars, but preventing them by treating acne early is far easier.

Picking pimples can worsen acne

Dermatologists also warned against the common habit of picking pimples.

Jacobs said this behaviour is particularly common among teenage girls and can worsen acne and increase the risk of scarring.

Doctors say the best solution is to treat the acne effectively so the urge to pick decreases.

Advice for parents of teenagers

Dermatologists say parents should guide teenagers toward simple routines and evidence-based skincare rather than influencer trends.

They also recommend regular habits such as washing pillowcases weekly and avoiding overly complicated routines.

The key message for both teens and parents is clear: healthy skin does not require complicated or expensive skincare, just the right approach for teenage skin.
